Christmas pudding [...] [is] a boiled mass of suet - a raw, hard animal fat [...] often replaced with a vegetarian alternative - as well as flour and dried fruits that is often soaked in alcohol and set alight. [...] [I]t is a legacy of the British Empire with ingredients from around the globe it once dominated [...].
Christmas pudding is a relatively recent concoction of two older, at least medieval, dishes. [...] “Figgy pudding,” immortalized in the “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” carol, appeared in the written record by the 14th century. [...] During the 18th century, the two ["plum pottage" and "figgy pudding"] crossed to become the more familiar plum pudding – a steamed pudding packed with the ingredients of the rapidly growing British Empire of rule and trade. The key was less a new form of cookery than the availability of once-luxury ingredients, including French brandy, raisins from the Mediterranean, and citrus from the Caribbean.
Few things had become more affordable than cane sugar which, owing to the labors of millions of enslaved Africans, could be found in the poorest and remotest of British households by mid-century. Cheap sugar, combined with wider availability of other sweet ingredients like citrus and dried fruits, made plum pudding an iconically British celebratory treat, albeit not yet exclusively associated with Christmas.
Such was its popularity that English satirist James Gillray made it the centerpiece of one of his famous cartoons, depicting Napoleon Bonaparte and the British prime minister carving the world in pudding form.
In line with other modern Christmas celebrations, the Victorians took the plum pudding and redefined it [...], making it the “Christmas pudding.” In his 1843 internationally celebrated “A Christmas Carol,” Charles Dickens venerated the dish as the idealized center of any family’s Christmas feast [...].
Three years later, Queen Victoria’s chef published her favored recipe, making Christmas pudding, like the Christmas tree, the aspiration of families across Britain.
Christmas pudding owed much of its lasting appeal to its socioeconomic accessibility. Victoria’s recipe, which became a classic, included candied citrus peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemons, cloves, brandy and a small mountain of raisins and currants – all affordable treats for the middle class. Those with less means could either opt for lesser amounts or substitutions [...]. Eliza Acton, a leading cookbook author of the day who helped to rebrand plum pudding as Christmas pudding, offered a particularly frugal recipe that relied on potatoes and carrots. [...] The high alcohol content gave the puddings a shelf life of a year or more, allowing them to be sent even to the empire’s frontiers during Victoria’s reign [...].
---
In the 1920s, the British Women’s Patriotic League heavily promoted it – calling it “Empire Pudding” in a global marketing campaign. They praised it as emblem of the empire that should be made from the ingredients of Britain’s colonies and possessions: dried fruits from Australia and South Africa, cinnamon from Ceylon, spices from India and Jamaican rum in place of French brandy.
Press coverage of London’s 1926 Empire Day celebrations featured the empire’s representatives pouring the ingredients into a ceremonial mixing bowl and collectively stirring it.
The following year, the Empire Marketing Board received King George V’s permission to promote the royal recipe, which had all the appropriate empire-sourced ingredients. Such promotional recipes and the mass production of puddings from iconic grocery stores like [Sains-bury's] in the 1920s combined to place Christmas puddings on the tables [...].

Israel's Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by STARVATION!!!
At the start of summer, Gaza's fields are usually bursting with ripening crops and fruits of all colours, scents and sizes.
But, nearly nine months into Israel’s war on Gaza, abundant harvests have given way to devastation and a dire humanitarian crisis.
A UN report says 96 percent of Gaza’s population is food insecure and one in five Palestinians, or about 495,000 people, is facing starvation.
Satellite images analysed by Al Jazeera's digital investigation team, Sanad show that more than half (60 percent) of Gaza's farmland, crucial for feeding the war-ravaged territory’s hungry population, has been damaged or destroyed by Israeli attacks.
Israel has killed at least 37,900 people and injured 87,000 others in bombings, by destroying healthcare that could have saved them, and by starvation.
North to south, nowhere and nobody has been spared.
North Gaza
In Beit Lahiya, once known for plump, juicy strawberries that locals fondly called "red gold", Israeli bulldozers and heavy machinery have systematically razed fields, reducing them to dirt.
Before the war, Gaza's strawberry industry employed thousands of people. Seeding and planting began in September, with harvesting from December through March.

Before and after satellite images show vehicle tracks over the once-fertile regions of Beit Lahiya.
Defying Israel’s ongoing attacks, farmers like Youssef Abu Rabieh figured out ways to grow food between bombed-out buildings - makeshift gardens of repurposed containers.

Gaza City
Thriving garden patches and back-yard fruit trees once dotted Gaza City, home to about a third (750,000) of Gaza’s 2.3 million population before the war.
South of Gaza City is Zeitoun, a neighbourhood named after the Arabic word for olive. Before and after satellite images show southern Zeitoun where nearly every last bit of greenery has been wiped out.
The olive tree is deeply beloved in Palestine, symbolic of Palestinian resilience against Israeli occupation.
During one short pause in fighting from November 22 to December 1, Palestinian farmers ran to harvest their olives and extract oil, because they do not know any other way to live, and because they needed the harvest.
Olive cultivation is crucial in the Palestinian economy and is used for everything from oil to table olives to soap.

Deir el-Balah
Its very name meaning "House of Dates", the central governorate of Deir el-Balah is one of Gaza’s largest agricultural producers, known for its oranges, olives and - of course - dates.
The date harvest typically begins in late September and continues through the end of October.

The satellite images below show the widespread destruction of farms, roads and homes in eastern Maghazi in the centre of Deir el-Balah.
Khan Younis
Khan Younis in the south used to produce the bulk of Gaza’s citrus, including oranges and grapefruits.
With its fertile soil and long hours of Mediterranean sunshine, it has the ideal climate as well as lots of space, being Gaza’s largest governorate - about 30 percent of the Strip’s 365sq km (141 sq miles).

Rafah
Rafah is Gaza’s southernmost district, with a pre-war population of about 275,000 people.
Rafah is also the name of the crossing with Egypt which used to be a vital link between Gaza and the rest of the world before it was destroyed by Israel in May.
In the southeast of Rafah is the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing where goods grown or produced in Gaza were shipped out of the territory.
Before and after satellite imagery shows how Israeli forces have flattened vital fields in eastern Rafah

Israel has imposed a land, air and sea blockade on Gaza since 2007 but the ingenious farmers of the enclave still managed to build a vibrant, mostly subsistence, agricultural sector before Israel's latest assault.
Faced with a lack of inputs because Israel controlled imports and exports, the farmers made it work anyway.
Like Mohammed Abu Ziyada, 30, who could not be more proud of the first crop of red corn he grew using seeds from China.
Abu Ziada, who farms in Beit Lahiya, decided to try red corn because it needs less water and fewer agricultural inputs than other corn varieties.

In 2022, Gaza's farmers exported $44.6m worth of produce, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture [PDF], but Israeli restrictions limited sales to a few neighbouring countries.
The vast majority of this produce (79 percent) was sold to the occupied West Bank, generating about $35.4m, followed by $8.4m to Israel (19 percent), $661,975 to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the remaining $138,868 to neighbouring Jordan.
Among Gaza’s exports in 2022 by trade value, one-third of them (32 percent) were strawberries, 28 percent tomatoes and 15 percent cucumbers.
Other exports include: eggplants (9 percent), sweet peppers (6 percent), zucchini (3 percent), chillies (2.5 percent), potatoes (1 percent) and sweet potatoes (0.5 percent).

Gaza’s 4,000 fishermen played a crucial role in Palestinian food security, supplying essential animal protein through the seafood with the catches they managed within the 12 nautical miles (22km) permitted by Israel.
In 2021, Gaza produced about 4,700 tonnes of fish according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
Since October 7, many fishermen have been unable to access the sea, while others risk their lives to bring food in, severely impacting Gaza's ability to feed itself.

The satellite images below show the extensive damage to Gaza’s main fishing port in Gaza City where almost all boats have been destroyed, along with significant damage to the road along the main pier.
Skeletons of buildings stand in Gaza, amid Israel's ongoing assault on the Palestinian enclave, June 25, 2024 [Amir Cohen/Reuters]
In February, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) assessed the agricultural and livestock damage across Gaza.
They found significant damage to:
626 wells
307 home barns
235 chicken farms
203 sheep farms
119 animal shelters
In addition, they estimated that 27 percent - 339 out of 1,277 hectares (3,156 acres) - of Gaza’s greenhouses were damaged by Israel’s assault.

Experts say military hardware and bombs have damaged Gaza's fertile soil for many years.
“There will be years of destruction because of the material used in the explosives and phosphorus bombs used there, this will affect the land and water in the long term,” agricultural consultant Saad Dagher told Al Jazeera.

Kinda want to buy the Inis perfume but I already have D&G Light Blue which is also a fresh beachy scent and I try to keep my perfume collection to one 10/10 perfume for each mood.
Light Blue opens with a sharp lemon note which I really like and fades down into a freshie with hints of sweet citrus. It smells like 2004 and reminds me of a Mediterranean beach during summer, drinking freshly squeezed lemonade while surrounded by hot, wealthy people sunbathing and hanging out on nearby yachts. Feminine but not overly feminine.
Inis smells like actual seawater, moss, and some light florals and citrus. It smells like 1998 and reminds me of spending a nippy day on a rocky beach near a cliff in the West of Ireland, before going to a gift shop along the shore that sells handmade soap, Aran pattern merino scarves, and Celtic Woman CDs as the dulcet tones of Enya plays in the background, before going back to your hotel which was formerly a manor house and taking a calming shower, using the posh products in the ensuite bathroom that somehow smell just like the sea you'd just visited but fancy and refined. Unisex but slightly masculine leaning.
#i might just get a travel sized bottle of the inis fragrance#out of all the expensive designer and niche fragrances I've sampled lately this random €40 one i saw when I went to buy a diffuser refill#is the one that stayed with me#it really does smell just like irish beaches#perfume#hm. looked on the kilkenny website and they have a gift set of the travel size and a couple of lotions and a shower gel for just €30#might get it if they're still there by the time I'll be in that part of town for my derm appointment next month

do you have any fragrance recs for masc summer scents?
Hey Anon,
I’m SO excited to answer this question and I hope you find something you like. I’ve put it all under read more so folks don’t hate me for clogging the dash.
I went through my collection and realized just how spring-forward mine is, but I can give you some *interesting* options to think about.
So when you ask for masculine - the average consumer thinks of like tobacco, leather, vetiver, cedar, and spices. And you’ll notice alllll of these tend to be more frequently associated with cooler months, notably the Autumnal ones. You’ll get some of them for base notes, but fragrances that highlight them are typically less Summery.
Summer on the other hand is typically associated with fruity, citrus, aquatic, and sometimes even a bit floral. So the fragrances reflect that.
See what I’m getting at here? So this was a fun challenge. And I’ve provided a bunch of options for you depending on your mood and budget. I will preface this however saying a LOT of fragrances these days are marketed as “unisex” so if you look most of these up, they won’t really be described as Masc, but I tried to lean away from florals (with some notable exceptions). For each of these, I’ve provided the fragrantica link so you can do some of your own digging. I tried to go with unconventional here. You aren't going to run into too many people wearing some of these around town.
You can try Scent Split (i swear it's a legit site, I use it) if you’d like to purchase tiny quantities of these... or some of the companies will provide discovery sets!
AQUATIC or BEACHY
Sailing Day
Klea
Sacred Water
Soleil Blanc
All of these are so incredibly different. I don’t own Sailing Day, but if my memory serves me, it’s fundamentally an “ocean-y scent but better” and highly affordable compared to the other two on this list. Klea is going to trend a little more floral but be more evocative of the Mediterranean Sea. Sacred Water is honestly the best aquatic I’ve smelled. It’s citrus-forward with some hints of floral, wood, and amber. Have you ever wanted to smell like the idea of tropical paradise and sunshine? That is Soleil Blanc. I have gotten many compliments wearing it. There’s a couple of variations from Tom Ford, but any will serve you well.
CITRUS
The Matcha 26
So *I* think this is a year-round scent, but most people consider it a spring/summer one! If you like “clean” smelling fragrances, this one has some fig, matcha and citrus with a woody undertone. It doesn’t give people headaches (that I know of) and it’s not very “loud” aka you walk into a room and everyone smells you.
AROMATIC
Bal d'Afrique
This one is ambery and woody with some zest! It’s subtle but smells so so so good. If you want a summer scent that’s non-intrusive and elevated, this one is perfect. Some folks say it smells almost peppery.
MISC.
The Soft Lawn
Ummagumma
Lampblack
The misc category is my favorite because these scents are odd but perfect. Please give these a shot.
Have you ever wanted to smell like … fresh tennis balls, but like… In a good way? Or maybe you like to smell like a manicured backyard of the 1%? Try The Soft Lawn by Imaginary Authors. Or do you want an edible and spicy/sweet fragrance you can wear into fall? Try Ummagumma.
BUT if you truly want a year-round fragrance that smells pretty close to what folks consider more masculine fragrances? Lampblack is your scent. I joke that it’s elevated Axe, but I’m serious in that it’s a great fragrance. It’s rich and spicy and I want to eat it. And it's much better than anything you'd find at Macy's (imo). Be be warned. One spritz is ENOUGH.
MASCULINE FLORALS (COULDNT HELP MYSELF)
Mojave Ghost
Anything from Boy Smells (try suede pony)
Mojave ghost is not a typical floral, in fact I think you’ll find it more woody/spicy than anything else. But like Bal d'Afrique, it’s pretty subtle on the skin. And then Boy Smells's whole BRAND is unisex/masculine florals. I am the minority in that I don't LOVE them, but they do such interesting things with their florals. And if you really want to lean into the tobacco/leather itc, they have you COVERED.
HOPE THIS HELPED YOU <3

NoveList Reading Challenge: December
Read a collection of short stories or essays by a non-American author!
Burning Questions by Margaret Atwood
This brilliant selection of essays—funny, erudite, endlessly curious, uncannily prescient—seeks answers to Burning Questions such as:
• Why do people everywhere, in all cultures, tell stories? • How much of yourself can you give away without evaporating? • How can we live on our planet? • Is it true? And is it fair? • What do zombies have to do with authoritarianism?
In over fifty pieces, Atwood aims her prodigious intellect and impish humor at the world, and reports back to us on what she finds. The roller-coaster period covered in the collection brought an end to the end of history, a financial crash, the rise of Trump and a pandemic. From debt to tech, the climate crisis to freedom, from when to dispense advice to the young (answer: only when asked) and how to define granola, we have no better guide than Atwood to the many and varied mysteries of our universe.
Goodbye, Again by Jonny Sun
Jonny Sun is back with a collection of essays and other writings in his unique, funny, and heartfelt style. The pieces range from long meditations on topics like loneliness and being an outsider, to short humor pieces, conversations, and memorable one-liners.
Jonny's honest writings about his struggles with feeling productive, as well as his difficulties with anxiety and depression will connect deeply with his fans as well as anyone attempting to create in our chaotic world.
It also features a recipe for scrambled eggs that might make you cry.
Novelist as a Vocation by Haruki Murakami
Haruki Murakami’s myriad fans will be delighted by this unique look into the mind of a master storyteller. In this engaging book, the internationally best-selling author and famously reclusive writer shares with readers what he thinks about being a novelist; his thoughts on the role of the novel in our society; his own origins as a writer; and his musings on the sparks of creativity that inspire other writers, artists, and musicians. Readers who have long wondered where the mysterious novelist gets his ideas and what inspires his strangely surreal worlds will be fascinated by this highly personal look at the craft of writing.
Ripe Figs by Yasmin Khan
The acclaimed author of Zaitoun returns with vibrant recipes and powerful stories from the islands that bridge the Mediterranean and the Middle East. For thousands of years, the eastern Mediterranean has stood as a meeting point between East and West, bringing cultures and cuisines through trade, commerce, and migration.
Traveling by boat and land, Yasmin Khan traces the ingredients that have spread through the region from the time of Ottoman rule to the influence of recent refugee communities. At the kitchen table, she explores what borders, identity, and migration mean in an interconnected world, and her recipes unite around thickets of dill and bunches of oregano, zesty citrus and sweet dates, thick tahini and soothing cardamom. Khan includes healthy, seasonal, vegetable-focused recipes, such as hot yogurt soups, zucchini and feta fritters, pomegranate and sumac chicken, and candied pumpkin with tahini and date syrup.
Fully accessible for the home cook, with stunning food and location photography, Ripe Figs is a dazzling collection of recipes and stories that celebrate an ever-diversifying region and imagine a world without borders.

Unlike mainstream fragrances, which often rely on familiar notes and extensive marketing campaigns, niche perfumes focus on the artistry of scent creation. Brands like Parfums de Marly offer collections that evoke a sense of luxury and sophistication. Their Mandarino fragrance, for instance, is a perfect blend of citrus and floral notes, creating an uplifting and refreshing scent.
The appeal of niche perfume lies in its exclusivity and attention to detail. Niche perfumers take pride in sourcing high-quality ingredients and crafting unique compositions. For example, Initio Fragrance is renowned for its bold and audacious scents that often explore the darker facets of fragrance. Their Hypnotizing Fire perfume is a perfect representation of this, combining notes of spices, woods, and sweetness to create an unforgettable olfactory experience.
