Working my way through another rewatch (shocking I know but you must withhold your gasps of astonishment.) Anyyyyywwwwaaay. I’m on S2E2, truly one of my favorites for Polin moments, and the gears are turning in my noggin.

Colin has made this grand statement of “swearing off women” yet he is attending social events not even an hour off the boat from Greece. He didn’t have much of a choice in attending the Royal Races, but that was a family event.

I’m specifically referring to the soirée at Lady Danbury’s where most of the family is not in attendance. Anthony is not there because he keeps pissing off Kate, Benedict is off visiting Will’s new club, and F, G, and H are not yet old enough to attend.

This leaves Colin and Eloise as the lone siblings who do go. It’s kind of jarring seeing just the two of them and Violet taking their leave when there is usually a large gaggle of Bridgerton’s milling about. I was so thrown off by this, it got me thinking;

The point of these party’s, balls, soirées, etc is to have the marriage minded persons of the ton mingle and find matches. So if Benedict, who is not looking for a wife, can skip out on these social events, why can’t Colin? He has sworn off love and women. Well except for Pen. He wouldn’t dream of swearing HER off.

This man was so oblivious, as we well know. He could have easily avoided this embarrassing collection of gentleman showing off their talents, especially as he is “just a spectator” and doesn’t intend to impress any of the ladies.

Yet here he is, immediately conversing with Pen about his travels and finding himself and fabulously fucking up telling her that she means too much to him to swear off (“you do not count” comment, I’m looking at you.) My eyes roll so far back in my head during most of this conversation and my heart hurts for Pen because he is so close to getting it but baby boy’s head is so far up his ass it may as well be a hat. Just tell her you missed her and you value how she sees you. Because he did miss her. And now he’s attending parties and shit so he can see her.

In conclusion, Colin “I have sworn off women” Bridgerton is enduring the marriage mart in order to hang out with his bestie, Penelope.

You’re so so so fucking close, Colin. Just give it a few more months and a devastating lack of letters and you’ll realize you actually HAVE sworn off all women EXCEPT for Penelope.

( And actually his candle is already low and a liiittttle bit lit, implying the love was always there, burning so low as to not be noticed, but surely burning nonetheless 🔥♥️ )

Edit: I let this go on long enough. I’m putting an editor’s note on it. As we should all know by now, this symbolism is what the season 3 part 1 trailer was trying to convey. In the show, Colin’s candle shot is reversed. The candle goes out. Of course this can mean different things, but I believe we can all basically agree, given the context of the scene, that he’s recognizing his time is running out. His hope of being with Penelope is slipping away.

Yeah, I felt like a bit of a clown when I saw the scene and it turned out this post, which had already garnered thousands of notes by then, turned out to be a total fuckin fabrication. But how was I supposed to know the team that cut the trailer would reverse a shot??

Yes, it is still basically true- she was always in love him and he finally fell in love with her. Something was always there for him with her, but really he didn’t start falling for her until he started seeing her as a woman and they kissed and, ya know, here we are.

But anyway, my basic point is this: trust no one. Don’t trust me. Definitely do not trust the Bridgerton trailer editors. Just stay vigilant, alright?

when you think about it, it’s crazy colin confesses. he has no idea penelope has loved him for years and as far as he knows, she truly wants to marry debling and THEN she says the idea of him having feelings for her is laughable, like the hits just keep on coming but he’s still like yeah yeah cool but what if I did? have feelings for you?? he does NOT waste anymore time, he said this is how my parents got together and what my mom said to do and if I am anything, it is a mama’s boy

are people seriously not understanding that the whole point of colin's arc this season is him trying to be something he's not??

like sure the brothel scenes are a little weird and jarring but like they're meant to be??? because he's not actually that into it, he's just trying to do what all the other men his age are doing so he can fit in??

the writers aren't trying to 'turn him into anthony or simon' or make him a rake because that's what we're used to - HE'S trying to turn HIMSELF into anthony or simon or basically any of the other guys who this comes naturally to; who enjoy sleeping with lots of different people somewhat emotionlessly and don't get lonely because of it (and no judgement to that it's just not him)

he literally kisses Pen ONCE and absolutely loses his mind over it because its obviously never felt like that for him before. that moment is his 'oh so that's what that's supposed to feel like' moment and that's how he knows he's in love with her its literally so good???

i understand people feel like its rushed but honestly to me it feels perfectly in character for him to discover the solution to his loneliness he's been searching for all this time and immediately dive into it headfirst. that moment right at the end of ep4 where he asks her to marry him is the most authentic colin i think we've seen all season. he's sweet and funny and playful and passionate and impulsive - he's finally stopped trying to be someone he's not and now that he knows who he is and what he wants he's all in.

I love the difference between Pen and Colin. She’s loved him for years, silently but unwavering. While he’s just come to the realisation that somewhere along the line he’s fallen completely head over heels for her and he is UNHINGED about it. All I’m saying is Colin wouldn’t last a minute in the asylum where they raised her.
