A lot more stories that Grant can make up with his model trains when he rebuilds his model railway layout.
Paxton’s package. Paxton the diesel engine received a special package at the harbor. Sir Topham Hatt said it’s a gift for Salty to celebrate the anniversary of when he first came to the island. And the gift was an antique anchor from one of the very first cargo ships to ever come to Sodor. Will Paxton be able to keep it hidden from Salty before his party at the docks?
Ulli and Oliver. Oliver the great western engine was going to work with Ulli, one of the diesel shunters from the mainland. He really hopes the diesel can handle Dulcie & Isabel the way he does.
Samantha’s Santa special. Samantha the purple saddle tank engine is very excited. She was going to pull the presents train, as well as pick a coach for Santa to ride in so he can go to his grotto and give out presents for the children.
Rosie and Hector. Rosie was requested to collect an extra large load of stone from the blue mountain quarry. Paxton would normally do it, but he was feeling sick. But Rosie was nervous because she had to carry the crushed stone in Hector. Rosie was still a little bit nervous about Hector because she still remembered that he frightened her on his first day on Sodor. Will Rosie be able to forgive Hector for scaring her?
Double Timothy trouble. It was almost Halloween, and Timothy the oil burning engine heard a story from Thomas that there’s a ghost engine who shares the same name as him. The oil burning engine was rather nervous, but he had to do something because there can be only one Timothy on Sodor.
Amanda’s ghost hunt. Amanda was requested to take some passengers to go trick or treating from station to station when she heard a story from Fizzy. It’s a story about another E2 tank engine. He’s not as scary as Timothy aka engine number zero. He is known as engine 17.
Engines in space. Jupiter and 119 were visiting Sodor from their American railroad because they were to help Thomas with a brand new place on the railway. It’s a long tunnel with cardboard models of the planets. It was to make them feel like they were in outer space.
Mixed traffic trains. Sir Topham Hatt is trying out a new railway experiment, mixed traffic trains, which are trains that have coaches and freight cars together. Gordon thought the idea was ridiculous because he says passengers and freight don’t mix. He wouldn’t want smelly freight too close to his passengers.
Fizzy fizzles out. Fizzy the red tank engine was shunting freight cars when the ballast trucks began making him very upset. He gave them such a bump that he and the trucks came off the rails. To make matters worse, his fire bars collapsed. So he couldn’t deliver Coca-Cola to the stations. So he was sent to be repaired and Poy had to deliver his freight cars for him.
Robin’s race. The engines on the Island of Sodor were being visited by some of the famous engines from the mainland. Jimmy the Jinty and some of his friends, Simon, Robin and Terry. Sir Topham Hatt had requested Shedmaster Jimmy to bring them to visit and lend a wheel or three for the summer holidays on Sodor. Robin explained he’s as quick as the robins that nested on him years ago and Thomas challenged him to a race after telling him that he can go faster than the wind. Who will win the race from the quarry and back to Knapford station?
Engine ten thousand. Gordon was feeling very excited because a very grand looking engine is coming to visit from the mainland. It was a class W1 engine who has the number 10000 on his cab. He was known as Hush-Hush. He had come to fill in for Rebecca when she was sent to the works to be fitted with new boiler tubes.
Stephen’s great race. Stephen was feeling very excited because it was the anniversary of when he won the Rainhill Trials many years ago. He wanted to find a way to celebrate his anniversary. So, the engines decided that Stephen should race a horse pulling a single wagon from Ulfstead Castle to Brendam Docks. Will Stephen show everyone, especially Diesel that he’s more than just an antique, but a reliable engine with the heart of a champion?
Tiger’s roaring whistle. One day, an old fashioned steam locomotive named Tiger was visiting the Island of Sodor. He used to work on the Liverpool and Manchester railway. After his long journey, he was given a new whistle that sounded a bit like a tiger roaring. Will he be able to put it to good use?
Henry and the holograms. Henry the green engine saw Ronnie the Amtrak engine was given a gift from Kenji in Japan. It was a hologram projector that will be fitted to the computer in his cab. A hologram is a three dimensional reproduction of an image. That way, Ronnie can download pictures from the web and make them look real. But Henry was a little bit worried that Ronnie might have trouble getting the hang of his new hologram projector.
Flash dashes in. A new high speed train has come to visit the Island of Sodor. His name is Flash. He’s 4 years old and he is eager to impress the other engines. But will he be able to fit in with Thomas and the other engines?
Diesels and Daleks. The engines were having an anniversary party for the show known as Dr. Who. Diesel, Timmy, Splatter and Dodge teased Percy and Poy about the Daleks coming to send the steam engines to the scrap heap by blasting their boilers to bits. The two little green engines felt rather nervous. But then Thomas had a naughty idea on how to teach Diesel and his pals a lesson. He spoke to Ruth the inventor, who had created remote control replicas of the Daleks for the party to help prank the diesel engines. And that night, just before the party began, they used them to scare the four diesels into thinking they were going to exterminate them.

Hi! I love your writing! Can you maybe write companions reacting to Shaun calling them mom/dad, maybe when theyre in trouble (like raiders attacking their settlement/home)? Have a good day!
Cait:
“Yeah! Get them mama!”
Had she not been any better with her reflexes, the little boy’s words may have ended up landing her missing a few teeth. There just so happened to be a raider dumb enough to try to break into your little home, so naturally..Cait goes in for the swinging once she made sure they didn’t have a gun on them.
With one final swift punch to the invaders head, Cait seized victory once again- and yet..all she could think about was the way that the child calling her that made her feel. She probably wouldn’t even outwardly acknowledge it- but once it was just the two of you in your own privacy, she’d confess that she was terrified.
Curie:
“Hey mom, do you need any help with the labs today? It looks really neat- I bet you could teach me all kinds of stuff.”
The second she heard what the little boy said, her heart swelled 10x in size just from pure joy. “Well of course you can, just make sure to wear the proper safety equipment, sweetheart.” She’d respond, giving Shaun a pair of safety glasses and wearing one of the sweetest, most proudest grins ever imaginable upon her face.
Danse:
Even though he wasn’t really a light sleeper, Danse had the ability to wake up as soon as someone entered the room. This was of course true when your son nudged the door open, his blanket slung messily over his shoulder and his eyes wide.
Once he realized who it was, Danse relaxed the slightest bit. “What’s wrong, Shaun?” He’d ask with a voice ladened with a hefty sleepiness.
“I-I’m scared, Dad. I had a nightmare and it- it just seemed..*sniffle*..it seemed so real.”
Suddenly the sleep would be knocked right of Paladin when his mind caught on to what the small child just said. Him? Dad?
Blinking away the shock, Danse tilted his head toward your peacefully sleeping body. “Here, come see son.” He’d urge with a yawn, waiting for the little boy to climb between you and him. Once snug, he’d then wrap his arm around the both of you.
Just when had he become so lucky?
Deacon:
“You’re really the best, Dad.”
Upon hearing such a bold assertion from the child, Deacon would stand in pause for just a mere moment. Chills would race up and down his spine as he stared down at the wondrously kind eyes lovingly peering back up at him. As much as he desired to keep looking back, a smirk would ghost his lips- thankfully he was able to concoct a little bullshit response on the fly.
“Yeah, ya ain’t too bad yourself either kiddo. You take after your dad.” He’d affectionately tease back, patting the child on the shoulder.
Gage:
If there was one thing that kids were, Gage learned that they were inquisitive little shits. Your own child was a testament to that statement. Just when Gage thought he could relax, up comes Shaun with an array of questions ready to shoot.
“Pa, why do you wear an eyepatch? Did something happen or are you just saving that eye’s strength?”
Gage coughed whenever he realized what Shaun used as his opener. Nuka-cola spurted from the raider’s nose, causing him to sputter as he wiped it away with the back of his hand.
“Come again?” He’d ask with one huge green eye, trying not to cough a lung up in the process.
He was happy though, even if he might’ve killed himself choking on nuka-cola.
Hancock:
It was honestly alerting to see how shocked he was that this happened. He knew goodneighbor was no place for his son but..he never expected this to happen. While down at the third rail, some deranged man came down demanding money- pulling out a gun as he spoke.
“Papa, please...are we going to be okay?” Shaun’s terrified eyes bore straight into the ghoul’s very soul, making his heart break despite how happy he should’ve felt after hearing those words.
Putting a hand atop the boy’s shoulder, Hancock made sure to keep both of their bodies below the table. “Of course we are kiddo, you just sit here and don’t make a sound.”
And with that, Hancock would spring up and shoot his way to safety- he had to. His son was there after all.
Macready:
Having two little boys in the house was already bad enough. Having two of them similar in age and just as troublesome as each other? Whew, it was an understatement to say that you and Mac had your plates full.
Luckily with his experience, things weren’t entirely hectic. Just like now..
You had managed to come home right on time to catch Mac mid-scolding. His hat nearly falling from his head as he cashed his gaze down at the pouting children in front of him .
“I don’t care how much fun it is, you two can’t go around spooking the neighbors. That’s the best way to get shot, for fu-..for Pete’s sake.” You couldn’t barely hold in your chuckle at your lover’s choice of words, since when had he become so dramatic?
“Sheesh, chill dad..” Shaun spoke, dismissing his adoptive father with a wave of his hand before he and Duncan promptly ran off- leaving a completely dumbfounded Mac to sit and process what just happened.
Did his two sons really just dismiss him like that? Did Shaun...did Shaun just call him dad?
Maxson:
It was all Maxson had wanted. This feeling of belonging..it was amazing. It was something that even the brotherhood and all it’s devoted members couldn’t provide him.
“Hey Dad, you alright?” Shaun’s little voice pierced through Arthur in a way that wasn’t at all painful, yet somehow hit him like a freight train.
It was then that Maxson realized he had been staring, jaw hanging. “W-what? No, I mean..yes, yes I’m alright Shaun. Is everything okay?” Real smooth, don’t worry, Arthur promptly begins to beat himself up over it.
Though confused, Arthur was so, so very happy.
Nick:
“Da, are you coming or what?”
Immediately, Nick assumed he had overheated. Surely there was no possible way Shaun was calling him...no. Blinking a few times, one could even hear the low whir of his servos fire up as he tried to process what just happened. Once he finally realized that yes, that was indeed reality- a huge smile would grace the synth’s face in response. In an attempt not to “lose his cool”, Nick would just simply nod and follow along- replaying the entire thing in his head over and over again.
Old Longfellow:
He had expected “Grandpa” before he got a “dad” out of the little boy, if he even got that! Honestly he didn’t expect much, he loved the kid but..come on, he’s some old man kissing up on the child’s mama/papa. With that being said, for the first time in quite a while, joy like sparklers- erupted all throughout the old man’s body whenever Shaun tugged his coat one rainy day and-
“Can I please come with you, pa? I’ll need to learn how to fix those condensers up one day anyways!”
Piper:
Piper, of all people, didn’t really think she’d be so happy being so..so domestic. Not a single article written, not a single story hunted down for the day or anything- just family time. Just you, her, Nat, and Shaun.
Much like your day, the night also consisted of this calmness. Only coming to an end whenever it was officially bed time.
“I love you ma, good night.” Shaun sleepily muttered, turning around in the process so he could get comfortable and ready to sleep.
That was probably for the best, for as soon as she heard those magical little words, Piper’s eyes welled with tears without warning- only spilling whenever she was back in the comfort of her own room with you at her side.
Preston:
“Pa, are you sure you and mom won’t be gone for too long?”
The words stopped Preston dead in his tracks. Yes, it was his duty as your lieutenant- and your own as General, to respond to distress calls whenever they were made..so that unfortunately left your poor son in the care of your other companions more often than you’d like- more so, more than Preston would care for.
It was things like this that made him consider retiring all together.
Turning around, Preston would kneel down in front of the child, happiness shining in a luminous way within his dark eyes. “I..I promise you that we’ll be back before you even miss us, son.”
“Impossible, I miss you and mama already.”
Sturges:
“Dad, I’m scared..”
The very second he heard the little boy trembling in his arms whisper, the synth man felt cold fear flow through his veins. Raiders, always fucking raiders.
It was normal at this point for them to show up every now and then, usually you’d just chase them off with your flashy guns and whatnot- and you were doing that- but while you were out being the hero, it was Sturges prime duty to ensure shaun’s safety. As such, he’d take the little boy to their usual hiding spot and try to get him to be quiet...but that? That was enough to make him want to personally go out there and rip a raiders head off. How dare they scare his..his son?
“Shhh, I’ve gotcha little buddy..you just hang in tight.”
X6-88:
(I honestly don’t see how this could happen with Shaun in particular- even with the whole au I use with Maxson and Shaun dynamics- Shaun would still know X6 as that cool dude that teleported him back and forth.)
-sorry this took so long, hope you liked it.

Tumblr jukebox - BoB, Winnix - 69 (and yes, I understand that you're not going to use "69" as the actual literal prompt, more's the pity)
Hello my dear anonymous flower! The song I landed on for you was Angel Haze’s “Crown.” You get a double-length fill of flirty pre-relationship Winnix in an AU where Dick becomes a crime boss in New York after the war for some reason and Nix’s dad is in bed with the mafia because sometimes the muse just goes super hard. Enjoy!
Winters didn’t look like the kind of guy who ran an extensive criminal syndicate.
He was in an understated blue suit, cut to emphasize the long, lean line of his body, with his hair combed and slicked into place like a choirboy. His shoes were shined to a high polish and a silver tie-clip flashed at his breast when he moved. He looked like nothing so much as a pastor’s son who’d wandered into a bespoke wardrobe by mistake. Lew supposed that was the point.
He bellied up to the bar next to Winters to get a better look, keeping a couple of empty seats between them for plausible deniability. Winters appeared to be nursing a Coca-Cola in one of those little glass bottles and was deep in conversation with a serving girl who was half-leaned on the stool beside him.
“ - really don’t have to do that,” the serving girl was saying.
“It’s no trouble,” Winters told her, smile gentle and reassuring. “Doc Roe is an old Army buddy of mine. You take your mother by his practice over on 46th Street and tell him I sent you. He’ll have her fixed up in no time.”
The serving girl blinked, eyes big and wet, and pressed her teeth coquettishly into the cushion of her lower lip. “Thank you, Major, really.” She set her hand on his arm, up near the crook of his elbow, and leaned in, presumably to ensure that Winters could hear her. Lew was sure the clear view it provided into her ample cleavage was a happy coincidence. “If there’s anything I can do for you—anything at all—you just let me know, all right?”
Winters smirked, eyebrows quirking, and didn’t look away from the woman’s face for even a second as he patted her shoulder and replied, “Thank you, Lola. I’ll keep that in mind.”
Lola grinned, scooped a couple of drinks onto her serving tray, and sashayed away into the crowd with a swivel in her hips that belonged on a dashboard hula dancer. Lew couldn’t help but snort.
He turned back toward the bar, stomach jumping as his gaze flashed across Winters’ own on the way. Lew took care not to look over, flagging the bartender down to order two fingers of Vat 69. The bartender slid a glass over to him in short order, but before Lew could fish his money-clip free of his breast pocket, a couple of bills hit the bar in front of him.
“It’s on me,” said a warm, polite voice to his left.
Lew turned to find that Winters had sidled over to sit beside him, lounging on the bar stool as if it were as comfortable as any plush armchair. He licked his lips and tipped his glass in Winters’ direction.
“Cheers.”
Winters hefted his Coke and returned the sentiment in kind. They drank in silence for a moment, and then Winters set his bottle down with a muted clink and said, “I don’t think I’ve seen you in here before.”
“Not my usual haunt,” Lew agreed, lifting one shoulder in a shrug.
“What brings you in tonight?”
“Boredom, I guess,” Lew said after a moment’s consideration. “Curiosity, maybe. Feels like I’ve been going to the same four places since I was old enough to hail a cab, figured it was time for a change of scenery.”
Winters hummed and dipped his chin in a nod. He gave Lew a look over, crown to toes and back up again, and then extended his hand. “Dick Winters.”
“Lewis Nixon,” Lew said, and shook it. “The Third, if you want to be properly pedantic about it.”
Dick snorted, mouth curling. “You know,” he said, wrapping a loose hand around his bottle and tapping his fingers against the surface, “I think I know your father. Nixon Shipping & Freight, right? Owns about half the port between here and Jersey?”
Lew couldn’t help but grin. He’d been loitering in the hallway outside his father’s office just a few days before, listening to him rail to his friends in the Outfit about how the Major was tying up his overseas lines and needed to be handled.
“Small world,” he offered.
“You in the same line of business?” Dick asked, taking a sip of his Coke.
“Not at present.”
“Why’s that?” “Son of a bitch fired me.”
Dick’s eyes widened in surprise. “What for?”
“Call it a difference of opinion.” Lew took a quick slug of whisky and licked his lips, leaning in like he was sharing a particularly tawdry secret. “See, dear ol’ Dad is willing to climb into bed with all sorts of unsavory characters if he thinks it’ll get him ahead in business.” He straightened up and smoothed the line of his tie down his chest. “I like to think I’m a little more discerning when it comes to who I let between my sheets.” He paused, and added, “So to speak.”
Dick’s smile cracked just wide enough to show a sliver of teeth, blue eyes dancing in the low glow seeping off the lights behind the bar. “Is that so?”
Lew shrugged again, flashing him a small, smug smirk.
Dick watched him for a second, eyes narrow and calculating, before he ventured, “When you say ‘unsavory’ - ”
“Domenico Gianelli,” Lew provided, cutting him off.
Dick’s mouth snapped shut, eyebrows climbing toward his hair. It was bold, perhaps, to name a high-ranking mafia capo in public like this, but Lew had never been one for subtlety. From the delighted twist to his mouth, it was an attribute that Dick appreciated.
“I host a poker game in back room on Saturdays for a few buddies of mine,” Dick said, still smiling. Lew already knew that, of course. He had a feeling that Dick was likewise aware that he’d wandered in tonight, of all nights, to take advantage of that very fact, but he carried on gamely, “Would you care to join us?”
Lew took a thoughtful sip of his drink. “What’s the buy in?”
“Fifty bucks.”
Lew sucked his teeth. “Steep.”
“Only if you can’t afford it.”
Lew bit back a laugh, ducking his head. “All right,” he said, when he’d regained his composure. “Fifty bucks.” He offered his hand again. Dick took it without missing a beat, the both of them clinging maybe a second or two longer than propriety required.
“You know, Mr. Nixon,” Dick said, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Lew’s palm was still warm against Dick’s when he grinned, “Please, call me Nix.”

It’s #tbt Throwback Thursday! In 1958, more than 4,200 home appliances traveled by Southern Railway from GE Power Company’s Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky, to North Carolina. The “appliance special” stopped at Asheville and Charlotte, then crisscrossed the state for carload sales in Statesville, Rocky Mount, Lumberton, and other cities. Advertisements in local newspapers announced the train’s arrival. The “Summer Special Carload Sale” was an event—customers were invited to “buy directly from the railroad siding,” where they could also enjoy free Pepsi Colas. Then and now, railroads deliver for American industry and consumers. Norfolk Southern has served the freight #transportation needs of America for nearly two centuries, connecting businesses and communities to the marketplaces of the world—creating jobs, supporting economies, and transporting goods on safe, environmentally friendly rail. #dyk #history #southernrailway https://www.instagram.com/p/B2BsMMfn7Nj/?igshid=avdcfp1gvajs

Heaton Lodge Huddersfield West Yorkshire 24th May 2021

Heaton Lodge Huddersfield West Yorkshire 24th May 2021 by loose_grip_99 Via Flickr: Heading east GB RailFreight Class 60 diesel 60056 with 6E36 the 01.45 Liverpool Tuebrook Sidings to Drax biomass train has just passed Heaton Lodge Junction north of Huddersfield on the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Calder Valley line at 06.54. The shot was taken from the footbridge over the ex-LNWR New Line which now joins the Calder Valley line at Heaton Lodge East Junction off left. The footpath continues under the LNWR line in a very low tunnel and up the hill past the stone building. It's now two years since the trees and undergrowth were cleared and nature is starting to take over again and obscure the view especially to the west of this view. 60056 was one of the ten Class 60 locomotives acquired by GB Railfreight from Colas that were earlier purchased from DB Cargo. It still carries the distinctive Colas livery but has been rebranded as Rail Freight.

Hone Your Investing Skills By Better Understanding Charlie Munger’s Savvy Strategies.
Here’s your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit down and pick the brain of one of today’s most successful investors. This post offer a personal invitation to enter the talented mind of Charlie Munger, legendary investor and financial partner of Warren Buffett.
As the vice-president of Berkshire Hathaway, Munger has done quite well as an investor – to put it mildly. This post gives you the secrets to his success, outlining in clear detail the steps you too can take to hone your knowledge and become a smart, worldly and successful investor just like Munger.
Great investors like Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett dedicate lots of time to learning more.
Have you heard of Charlie Munger? He’s the legendary investor and financial partner of Warren Buffett, a household name when it comes to smart, successful investing.
But that’s not all. Munger is also vice-president of Berkshire Hathaway, where Buffett is CEO. It should come as no surprise that Munger and Buffett have guided Berkshire Hathaway more than successfully!
Berkshire Hathaway is the fifth-largest public company in the world. Its activities are broad, with interests in sectors such as insurance, finance, energy, utilities, rail freight transport, manufacturing and services. The company also is the sole owner of fast food restaurant chain Dairy Queen, clothing manufacturer Fruit of the Loom and private jet company NetJets, to name just a few.
Berkshire Hathaway also holds considerable stakes in financial services firm American Express, technology giant IBM and The Coca-Cola Company.
On the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Berkshire Hathaway common stock is listed with the trading symbols BRK.A and BRK.B.
In December 2014, a Berkshire Hathaway Class A share sold for over $220,000, the highest priced per-share trade on the NYSE. In 2015, the annual revenue of Berkshire Hathaway was $200 billion.
Which begs the question: how did Berkshire Hathaway become such a success?
The company’s success was built on the brilliant investing strategies and sharp minds of Munger and Buffett. For Munger, his success as an investor stems from his unwavering desire to teach himself new things. Indeed, he is the perfect example of his belief that successful investors must be learning machines.
Munger and Buffett dedicate 80 percent of their working day to reading, making acquiring tons of knowledge a key part of their work. Munger says he wasn’t born a business genius but honed his investment savvy through countless hours of reading and absorbing information daily for years.
Munger follows an investing system that focuses on simplicity and builds on what you already know.
Investors like Munger, Buffett, Irving Kahn and Seth Klarman all swear by one method: the Graham value investing system, invented by Benjamin Graham, an American economist and professional investor.
What makes this system such a popular choice among the world’s best investors? This system is based on simplicity. The ultimate goal of the Graham value investing system is only doing things within your competence. As Buffett likes to say, investing is simple, but not easy.
Rather than getting into complicated investments that you might not fully understand, accept the limits of your knowledge and focus on sure bets. Doing so will secure you far better results.
In following the Graham system, Berkshire Hathaway sorts its potential investment opportunities into three baskets: In, Out and Too Tough.
The In basket holds worthwhile potential investments and is the smallest basket. The Out basket contains uninteresting opportunities; the Too Tough basket holds opportunities that look great but are currently outside Berkshire’s competence.
If you follow the Graham value investing system, you also focus on buying shares for less than their future earning potential. But in doing so, you need a healthy dose of patience waiting for them to appreciate.
Seth Klarman likens investing to sitting at a bus stop and waiting for a bus even though you have no idea when it’ll show up. It’s your job as an investor to focus on long-term results to make the best of your investments. You have to be ready to wait until undervalued shares regain their value.
You’ve also got to wait for the right moment to make a new investment. Unlike baseball, there are no strikes in investing. There’s no need to hit the ball with every pitch. Just make sure you’re ready to swing when the right ball comes along!
In other words, great investing requires a realistic approach, not to mention patience and courage, too.
Four simple ideas help a savvy investor stay cool headed and keep an eye on long-term opportunities.
Munger believes that just about anyone can follow Graham’s value investing system, as its guidelines are so simple and easily applied. Munger himself follows four important principles, easily adopted by any value investor.
First, treat owning a share as ownership in a business. You won’t understand the value of your shares unless you truly know the company in which you are investing. Any valuation of a share must start with a valuation of the core business.
Second, buy at a discount to give yourself a margin of safety. A margin of safety is the difference between the share’s current market price and its intrinsic value, that is, its future cash flow.
Think of this as following cars on a highway. By maintaining a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you, you can predict or react to sudden movements more easily. Drive too close, and you could misinterpret a move and crash. The same goes for investing – rather than trying to predict future price jumps, prioritize your financial safety and buy at a bargain price.
Third, always stay on the right side of the market. A Graham value investor knows how to spot mispriced assets and recognize the strange, even bipolar, behaviors of “Mr. Market,” the personification of the investing herd. Sometimes he’s depressed and sells assets at a bargain price, while other times he’s ecstatic and pays way more than he should. If you can spot them, investor mistakes such as these are golden opportunities for you.
And fourth, stay rational. This is harder than it sounds. It’s your job to remain unemotional when selecting investment opportunities. Investing according to your mood is foolish and at worse, dangerous.
To ensure your rational side is always in control, create a checklist that helps you divide tasks into simple blocks. This allows you to check in at every step and ensure that emotional errors aren’t lurking in your process.
As Munger says, rationality is something you’ve got to foster. Putting in the effort to stay cool is worth it as you’ll avoid making senseless mistakes.
Above all, a value investor needs to cultivate patience and courage to go bravely against the pack.
It’s just not enough to have a great investment strategy; you also need to cultivate personality traits that will keep you on the path to success.
To review, Munger believes patience and courage are essential traits for any great investor. The best investing opportunities come around when the market is fearful. This is important to know!
The thing is, however, that predicting when the market will get jitters is impossible. All you can do is wait for a bargain to show its face, and spend the time while you wait gaining useful information about other investment opportunities.
In other words, a “don’t just sit there, do something!” approach clashes with the philosophy of Graham value investing. Yet waiting can be challenging if you associate waiting with being unproductive!
But moving around shares too frequently also means higher taxes, fees and expenses, so don’t let your itchy trading finger get the best of you! Be disciplined and stick to the waiting game.
A Graham value investor must also be brave. Sometimes it’s hard to make a bold move when everyone else is holding their cards close to their chest. But remember, it’s market folly that creates the best investing opportunities for those who are courageous. Fight the tendency to follow the crowd and you may outperform the market.
Indeed, this strategy is like playing poker. Not everyone can win a game; it’s just not possible. The same goes for investing – it’s mathematically impossible for every investor to outperform the market.
You’ve got to keep an independent mind and know when to split from the pack. In this way, the worst times for other investors become the best times for Graham value investors.
And finally, remember that nobody is perfect – not even Charlie Munger or Warren Buffett! We all make mistakes. But by cultivating discipline and courage, and pushing yourself to learn new things every day, you’ll always improve and your investments will thrive.
Apply wisdom from a range of different disciplines to help you make better investing decisions.
The Graham value investing system isn’t the only framework Munger follows. He also channels the principles of worldly wisdom in every investing choice he makes.
Worldly wisdom is a unique framework that makes use of a set of mental models, or ways of thinking, across a range of disciplines.
Psychology, history, mathematics, physics, philosophy and biology – Munger believes that these all have wisdom that stems from each discipline’s unique way of seeing the world.
By examining behavior through these different lenses, a savvy investor can spot similarities and patterns where other less-insightful investors won’t.
So how do you cultivate interdisciplinary wisdom? Spend time learning about different fields, but not just by collecting loads of facts and information.
Instead, focus on the core ideas of each discipline – why do people in each field study what they study? How do they structure knowledge? And how do they use it? These questions will help you find the wisdom in just about any social or natural science.
Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to start relating these nuggets of wisdom to each other. This is what will help you make decisions as an investor.
For instance, say the price of a product has recently increased, yet the company is still able to sell the product in increasing numbers.
Doesn’t this event break the economic rule of supply and demand? Sure, but it also fits into a model one finds in psychology, that of a Giffen good – a product that a customer desires more when prices rise because it makes the good an exclusive or luxury item.
Having worldly wisdom can bring a competitive advantage. Had a narrow-minded investor observed this price increase, he might have decided to abandon the assets tied to the product. A worldly, wise investor would recognize the product as a Giffen good, go against the crowd and stick to his investment.
Charlie Munger is a highly successful investor, but not because he’s tapped into some mysterious type of investing magic. By following his guidelines of continuous learning, simplicity, patience, courage and worldly wisdom, you too can boost your success in investing.
