The suggestion that Serah knew she was going to die from the very start of the game has me 🥲 No one (aside from maybe Lightning and Caius) had a clue that she knew and that just makes it even more tragic, knowing she didn’t tell anyone… so that they wouldn’t stop her…
Oof, and instead of the nice peaceful dreams she dreamt during her crystal statis, she’s alone. In darkness. Hoping she’ll at least be remembered. 😭

How To Look Spiritual, Even When You're Not

How To Look Spiritual, Even When You're Not
Tumblr media
Looking spiritual can be a bit of a problem if you’re an atheist. This can make it particularly hard to crack onto the cute girl with the aum tattoo on her shoulder. Simply pointing out that all that chakra stuff is bullshit generally doesn’t go down too well.
I hang around with a lot of new age spiritual types these days because they tend to be more empathic and less judgemental than your average person. Less discerning perhaps too, but I’m OK with that. I may not share their wacky belief systems but I still want to fit in.
So here’s how to look spiritual even when you’re not:
Go To Yoga
Put aside all the spiritual business for a moment: yoga is a great workout, the stretching is excellent for your body, and the guy/girl ratio is the most favourable you’re ever likely to come across. I keep a yoga mat permanently installed in my car for emergencies, and women comment on it all the time. The only time I actually go to yoga is when a woman invites me, but that happens more times than you’d think. You may still be an asshole deep down, but because you’re in a yoga class the women will think you’re a decent guy.
Talk About Energy
Forget what you learned in high school Physics and Chemistry about the different forms of energy; that science thing is far too limiting. Energy is everywhere! Energy is everything. If you have any doubts, just quote Einstein’s famous formula E = mc2. That justifies describing pretty much anything as “energy”.
When you see a cute girl, don’t compliment her on her looks. Women hate that. Instead, tell her “Wow, you have a great energy!”. Try to keep a straight face while doing it and before long you’ll be mixing your kundalini with hers.
Study Tarot, Tantra, Chakras and Astrology
If you want to be able to pass for a new-age spiritualist, you need to get some basic ancient disciplines under your belt. Anything discovered in the last hundred years will leave you looking like a post-modernist, which definitely isn’t good for your spiritual image. So get down with the local wiccans, study some tarot, find yourself a tantric goddess to learn from, get your chakras aligned and find out when venus is transiting mars.
Change Your Vocabulary
A few subtle changes to your vocabulary can go a long way towards boosting your spiritual karma. It’s not as if you actually have to learn to speak Sanskrit or anything. Just try replacing these simple phrases with more enlightened equivalents:
Unenlightened
Enlightened
Thank You Namaste (add praying hand gesture for additional effect) Listening Holding space Breathing Energising The Body Relaxing Meditating Lucky Good Karma Guilty Bad Karma Die Cross Over, Transition Lust Kundilini I’m Tired My Chakras Need Aligning God Higher Power
Basically, the more esoteric euphemisms you can use, the more spiritual you’ll sound. The more spiritual you sound, the more you can get away with.
Declare Your Home An Ashram
In order to position yourself as a spiritual leader, you need to have an ashram of your own. I was really impressed to hear that Ratu Bagus of Bio Energy Shaking Meditation fame had an ashram in Bali, until a friend of mine who ended up there by a sheer freakish coincidence described it as “just a house, really”. So you only live in a unit now? It’s OK to start small with your first ashram. For extra bonus points, declare your ashram clothing optional and see how many faithful converts you can find.
Learn To Sit In Lotus Position
Never mind that you’ve been sitting in chairs since 3rd Grade, cross-legged is the new cool when it comes to looking spiritual. Even when you are sitting on a chair, you should adopt a cross-legged sitting posture at all times so you look like you now live in a permanent state of meditation.
For extra points, learn to sit in the true lotus position where your feet are shoved right up near your armpits. This will help work out your hamstrings, and give the doctors a good laugh down in Accident and Emergency when you turn up stuck in that position. But hey, plenty of people will be laughing at you now that you’ve adopted an esoteric spiritual lifestyle so get used to it.
Wear A Flowing Robe
Finally, if you want to be taken really seriously as a spiritual guru, you just ain’t going to cut it in a suit or jeans and a T-shirt. You need to get with the program and don a flowing white robe. This gives the illusion that you’re hovering slightly about the ground as you walk, which is good for your spiritual street cred. After all, the street is generally filthy and frankly your hallowed feet are above that kind of thing now.

Eijiro Kirishima –  as Li Shang from Mulan
-        *Mulan voice* Eijiro? Eijiro? Eijiroooo
-        Eijiro Kirishima is the handsome son of the Army General and it’s very obvious that everyone swoons for him. Yes, everyone in the army.
-        He’s manly, brave, sweet, caring, and responsible. What more can a soldier ask for?
-        “LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS! TO DEFEAT THE VILLAINS!” (ok that sounded better in my head)
-        during the “I make a man out of you” sequence, kirishima uses his hardening quirk to not only hype up his warriors but also for that extra effect. He’s just bad-ass and hot like that.
-        Eijiro wakes up at 5 am to train and work out. And yes, he does that shirtless. It helps him move a lot more and of course, it’s pleasing to the eyes.
-        H I S T O N E D M U S C L E S. that’s it. That’s the headcanon.
-        He needs that daily grind after all !
-        You swear you could hear the other soldiers sigh dreamily every time they catch him work out.
-        Whenever he praises his fellow comrades, he smiles a very cheeky smile, his shark teeth cutely popping out and it’s just so endearing and charming.
-        After being ridiculed and belittled by your fellow comrades for being physically weak, you wanted to prove them that they were wrong. You continue to stay determined as you decided to create your training regime that consisted of waking up at 5 am in the morning to train too (and this was prior to knowing that kirishima would wake up at the same time to work out too. Oooh~ what a coincidence.)
-        “(Y/N)! You like him? Helloooooo!? Him and I even share the same hair color! He ain’t worth it!”
-        “Mushu, please. You are a discount version of him. Now, I’m going to go and train now.”
-        You leave your tent at exactly 5 am, and as you began to stretch and do warm-ups outside, the biggest tent across yours suddenly opens up too, revealing General Eijiro Kirishima… in his shirtless getup.
-        “A-ah! Good Morning General Kirishima!” You stand up straight, shifting your weight to the right leg and bending your left, bowing to him.
-        He nods at you, shooting you a small smile. “You’re up early. Early for a new recruit! Do you plan to train?”
-        “Y-yes! I will be using the pole and training weights sir!” You bow your head, as you remain standing straight.
-        He hands you over the weights. He refuses to give it to you, instead insists to tie it on your wrists and help you up the wooden pole.
-        General Kirishima holds you by the waist, making sure you don’t fall and you’re positioned correctly onto the pole. “Alright. You’re positioned in the right way now, you may proceed.”
-        You continue to hold onto it, lowkey about to bang your head on the wooden pole as you were about to die of embarrassment.
-        “(Y/N), he’s just being nice and just treats you like any other soldier under his command. Don’t expect too much!” Mushu whispers from your side, as soon as general kiri steps back and was not within earshot of the two of you.
-        “I don’t have my hopes up at all, Mushu. I’m not expecting anything.” You sigh, trying to reassure yourself as you began climbing up. The weights pull you down, but you must persevere.
-        “You can do this, (L/N)!”
-        “(L/N)!?” You squeak, losing your focus, slipping down the pole and back to square one. You were a fumbling mESS
-        “woah woah woah. Is everything alright?” he was about to hold onto your waist again, making sure you don’t fall off or fall down. You collect yourself before becoming too flustered to answer.
-        “Y-yes General Kirishima! I’m fine!”
-        When your gender had finally been revealed after the battle against the villains, Kirishima did not feel betrayed albeit just disappointed that you had to hide that fact for far too long and wasn’t being open to him when the two of you became much closer
-        He’s been in love with you ever since the beginning.
-        He’s always admired your passion and your drive. However, due to him being the general, he wasn’t so sure to approach you without being biased.
-        “You don’t find a girl like that in every hero’s journey.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katsuki Bakugo – as The Beast
-        Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a blonde young prince lived in a     shining castle.  Although he had everything his heart desired and his quirk was one of the most powerful many have seen, the prince was belligerent, selfish, and unkind.  But then, one winter's night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold.
-       Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away, but she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old woman's ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress.  The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love and no humbleness in his heart, and as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast, and placed a powerful spell on the castle, and all who lived there.
-        We’ve been known, the B in bakugo stands for beast (insert lenny face for a certain implication)
-        Essentially, Bakugo had two quirks at once. Not only was he now a beast, (a physical quirk) but he also has his explosion quirk.
-        He’d pretty much look the same as the beast from the Disney movie, however there’s some blonde highlights in his fur and he’s much more aggressive and intimidating to look at. His fangs more emphasized and he has a much softer appearance; like that of a huge pomeraninan.
-        Ok…. no thoughts head empty just thinking about katsuki having an even huskier voice now that he’s transformed into a beast.
Katsuki Bakugo, who was ashamed of his newly transformed monstrous appearance, shut himself in his castle, The rose the old woman had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his twenty-first year.  If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken.  If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.  As the years passed, he fell into despair, and lost all hope, for who could ever learn to love an explosive beast?
-        Significant members of Katsuki’s posse who were turned into magical items were Eijiro Kirishima, his castle maître d' whom had turned into a candelabra, his annoying majordomo, Tenya Ilda became a pendulum clock, the head housekeeper, Ochaco Uraraka had turned into an enchanted teapot, the vice-head housekeeper, Denki Kaminari had become a little tea cup, Mina Ashido, the lady-in-waiting became an enchanted wardrobe, and lastly, Hanta Sero, the Castle’s Valet and Chaffeur, became a coat rack.
-        All of Katsuki’s servants try their very best to make their prince change his ways, however, to no avail, their efforts have been fruitless. They were about to lose hope as Bakugo was about turn 21, which meant the rose would no longer bloom until… you came.
-        Gran Torino, your grandfather, had gotten lost in the woods and ended up finding Bakugo’s castle to seek shelter, not knowing he had been trespassing all along. After Katsuki finds him, he throws him to the castle dungeon.
-        You were the spirited, headstrong and bookish “beauty” of the town, however only being admired for your looks and not for your intelligence. You really had enough of this village and wanted to get out of here asap but after your grandfather had told you to wait just a little bit more, even though you frankly had enough of Monoma, the ~most handsome~ yet the biggest jerk in town constantly asking for your hand in marriage.
-        The disappearance of your grandfather had prompted for you to search for him, leading you too, to the beast’s castle.
-        Once you get there, you are to be greeted by Bakugo in his very beastly form, terrifying you. However, you stood your ground, asking for your grandfather. Gran Torino is set free under the condition of you having to stay in the castle instead.
-        At your first night, you refuse to join him for dinner enraging him.
-        “Where is she?” Bakugo grits his teeth, growling at Ilda.
-        “Aha- Well- You see… she’s not coming.” Ilda mutters nervously, his clock hands waving in weird chopping gestures.
-        “WHAT!?” Bakugo’s voice echoes around the dining hall, He leaps out of the room, busting the doors open, whilst Kirishima, Ilda, and Ochaco follow suit.
-        He bangs the door, “OI OI OI I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO COME DOWN FOR DINNER?”
-        “I’m not hungry.” You reply softly.
-        “ HAH? YOU COME OUT OR I’LL BREAK DOWN THE DOOR!”
-        “Master Bakugo… I could be wrong, but that may not be the way to win a girl’s affection.” Kirishima speaks in a hushed whisper, grimacing.
-        “Please attempt to be a gentleman.” Ilda says slowly and matter of factly.
-        Bakugo grits his teeth, scrunching his eyebrows, pointing to the door. “But she’s being… SO DIFFICULT!” he turns to the door, as if wanting you to hear what he was saying.
-        “Gently… Gently…” Ochaco repeats, trying to calm the prince down.
-        Bakugo rolls his eyes and repeats his words more softly this time, “Oi… will you come down for dinner?”
-        “No.”
-        He turns to his servants once again, pointing to the door, his mouth forming into a pout.
-        “O- It would be my greateest pleasure if you would join me for dinner.” He could barely muster out the words. “Please?”
-        “No, thank you!”
-        “YOU CAN’T STAY THERE FOREVER!” He barks, “THEN GO AHEAD AND STARVE!” He storms out of the hall, running his way to his castle wing.
-        After you were saved by the beast from the wolves, you tend to his wounds. Bakugo was rather… stubborn and didn’t want you to touch it or even press hot compress onto it.
-        He continues to growl lowly, still seething from the pain, attempting to lick it just like any other canine would do.
-        “Don’t do that.” You try to stop him from doing so, he growls at you, moving his wounded arm away from you. The castle servants watch in fear, taking a few steps back.
-        “Just hold still.”
-        “GRRR! THAT HURTS!”
-        “If you hold still, it wouldn’t hurt as much!”
-        “IF YOU HADN’T RAN AWAY THIS WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED!”
-        “If you didn’t scare me, then I wouldn’t have run away!”
-        “PHAH! WELL YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE GONE TO THE WEST WING!”
-        “Well, you should learn how to control your temper!”
-        He was about to protest, until he couldn’t think of anymore good comebacks, he stops. he pouts and rests his head on his hand as a sign of defeat.
-        After that night, the two of you had finally warmed up to each other. Wanting to surprise you and at the suggestion of Kirishima and Ilda, Bakugo had finally given you the chance to explore the west wing. Surprising you by leading to you the castle’s huge and well-kept library. A place where he seeks solace and peace.
-        You never expected him to be someone so aggressive yet be so interested in reading and of other mediums of knowledge. You had a lot in common and a feeling was blossoming between the two of you. In turn, you help him act more like a gentleman.
-        You continue to spend time with him, not knowing that you were slowly but surely falling.
-        “There’s something sweet and almost kind, but he was mean, coarse and unrefined. And now he’s dear, and I’m unsure, I wonder why I didn’t see it there before?”
-        As much as bakugo denies that he isn’t in love with you, he’s actually always had. He had just feared that you would never love him in return.
-        With the help of the fashionista turned enchanted closet that is Mina, she brings out a beautiful golden ballgown hemmed with golden roses, with off the shoulder sleeves and golden gloves to complete the look. You tie some of your hair into a neat bun, with the majority trails down your neck in a beautiful and flowing motion.
-        Bakugo on the other hand, was dressed in such a refined and handsome way. He wore a golden vest over a white dress shirt with a white kerchief. And, to complete the look, his very trusting stylists, Kirishima and Kaminari styled him in black pants.
-        As you dance the night away, the chandelier adorned with sparkling crystals hanging above you, the mural in the ceiling looking ever so heavenly, and calming waltz music to accompany you… it was a dream come true.
-        You nestle your head onto Bakugo’s shoulder, the latter looking a bit surprised yet his mouth forming into a small smile as he continues to guide you by hold your hand, twirling you around and just dancing with you. No other peering or judgemental eyes to stop the two of you from doing so.
-        Did I mention that he was an amazing dancer? Perks of being a prince I guess, but it’s also one of his natural talents.
-        Bakugo lets you go back to your grandfather that same night, watching you leave with your horse on the balcony.
-        He loves you, so he has to let you go.
-        Monoma and the village people ambush the castle to kill the beast, the castle servants trying their best to keep them at bay and the ever so arrogant village hunter climbing his way to Bakugo, you rush to the scene, and as soon as Bakugo sees you, he regains his strength and sends Monoma falling down a pit.
-        Bakugo was able to go back to his quarters with you helping him down, taking one last look at you.
-        He smiles half-heartedly, still trying to catch his breath. “You came back…”
-        “Of course, I came back.” You fight the tears trying to form in your eyes, hugging him tightly and trying to comfort him in his last moments. “If only I’ve gotten here sooner.”
-        “I-it’s better this way.”
-        “We’re together now! Everything’s going to be fine…”
-        “At least, I got to see you one last time.”
-        “P-please… Don’t leave me… I love you.”
-        As the last rose petal was about to fall, Bakugo is knocked out and is slowly succumbing to his wounds. It is through your genuine care and love for him, along with his change of heart and new resolve (albeit still retaining most of his temperamental and pompous personality, he is able to keep it in check) he transforms back into a human.
-        Along with all those who lived in the castle turning back into human, the castle retaining it’s original bright and vibrant colors and atmosphere, you and Bakugo live your very own happily ever after.

Izuku Midoriya  –  as Hercules from Hercules
-        A babie Izuku had been sent down from godlihood to live as a mortal, as his parents, All Might, the God of Thunder, and Inko, the Goddess of Marriage had wanted to protect him from AFO, the God of the Underworld, who will take over Mount Olympus if Izuku does not take him down according to a prophecy.
-        He grows up as a simpleton, the adopted son of both farmers, dreaming to make it big out there, with very ambitious and pure dreams of becoming a hero.
-        But after, being belittled by his very own peers for not looking the part as he couldn’t control his gifted super strength, scrawny, timid, too pure for this world and quite weakhearted, Izuku wanted to prove to them that he will become a hero in the future.
-        “Sometimes… I feel like, I really don’t belong here. Like I’m supposed to be someplace else…” Izuku confesses sincerely, his adoptive father looking at him in worry as he did not want to stop the young boy from learning who he actually was and all the potential he has.
-        “If you found me then… where did I come from? Why was I left here?”
-        His adoptive parents hand him over a golden medal with a thunder and lightning symbol that was said to be hanging around his neck when they found him. This was his answer that raised more questions.
-        He embarks on his journey to find one of the temples of All Might, as this was the only thing the symbol on the medal could allude to.
-        Okay but go the distance fits Izuku so well! A pure and hopeful young boy seeking to make a difference in this world and just wanting to become a hero by the most wholesome means.
-  “I have often dreamed of a far off place, Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me. Where the crowds would cheer, when they see my face, and a voice keeps saying this is where I'm meant to be…”
-        just imagining izuku’s boyish voice singing this is just aaaaaaa
-        He eventually finds one of the temples, learning that all along, he was the son of the legendary God. All Might tells him he must prove his worth and earn back his godhood by becoming a true hero.
-        His father tells him to go search for Shota Aizawa, the famed instructor who has taught many great heroes in his time. Gifting Izuku a Pegasus, he embarks on another journey again to find the man, so that he may be trained.
-        When he arrives at the home of Aizawa, the teacher had retired as none of his heroes have ever earned a constellation in the sky, prompting him to expel them.
-        Izuku however, explained to his soon-to-be teacher that he wasn’t like the others, and… he proved true.
-        Although Aizawa was hesitant at first, he liked the kid’s determination and sheer will, so he began to train him.
-        Maybe, he could make a difference.
-        After his training and after undergoing an amazing transformation, Izuku was finally ready to start his way to achieving Godhood and becoming a true hero.
-        On the way to a nearby city, Izuku encounters you, a totally not damsel in distress and totally not a pawn of AFO, being tormented by a minotaur.
-        Izuku saves you and you couldn’t help but notice how pure and how gentle he was. You thank him albeit with a tint of sarcasm, hoping the two of you would meet again as you venture deeper into the forest to go and meet with AFO, whom you made a deal with in order to bring back your lost lover from the dead- only for them to leave you soon after.
-        You were once a very soft and romantic person. So open to giving love to others and never shying away from any form of affection. However…
-        After that terrible experience, you developed a cynical outlook. Not taking slack from anybody, always keeping your distance, barely interacting with others and showing no interest in forming any genuine relationships with others ever since.
-        Izuku reminded you that there was still some good in this world.
-        His genuine innocence, his boyish yet handsome looks, his pure determination to save others and his charismatic wit just swept you off of your feat.
-        However, you still had to keep your distance. You just weren’t ready to trust anyone again after that what had happened.
-        Izuku finally reaches his destination, defeating a Hydra using both of his wits and his strength, as he becomes a celebrated hero around the city of Musustafu.
-        Since then, he jumped from city to city, striking down every otherworldly monster that AFO had created to try and defeat him, and making him somewhat of a celebrity.
-        Izuku, however, remained humble. Knowing full well that the fame he had gained was not needed in order to become a hero.
-        In fact, it was what could become a hero’s biggest downfall.
-        Whilst chilling around in a huge museum dedicated to Izuku’s efforts, you pay him a visit and the pure and wholesome boy, clearly enthralled by you since the beginning, became very flustered at the sight of seeing you.
-        You start playing with your words, flirtatiously manipulating him to get him to go on a date with you.
-        “(Y/N) by the gods, he’s so pure why would you do this?” you thought. “what did he do to deserve this from me?” yet, you were bound by a contract with the god of the underworld, so it’s not like you have any choice right?
-        You go on a date with him, and end up falling reeeeeeal hard.
-        The two of you end your date in a romantic park, filled with conveniently placed statues of couples and a statue of Izuku, in the middle, near the fountain for you to fawn over whilst singing one of the best Disney songs ever to.
-        Aizawa hastens him to leave as they still have training to do, but he doesn’t leave until he picks a white flower from a tree, giving it to you, and planting a soft kiss on your cheek.
-        Midoriya hops on his Pegasus and they flutter away as you continue to watch his figure travel farther and farther away from you.
-        You observe and play with the white rose on your hand, sighing dreamily, until you snap back into your senses and think about the matter at hand.
-        “Ugh… what’s the matter with me? You’d think a girl would learn.”
-        *Cue Music and the Muses known as Ochaco, Tsuyu, Momo, Mina and Jirou)
-        “Who d'you think you're kidding~ He's the earth and heaven to you. Try to keep it hidden, Honey we can see right through you. Girl you can't conceal it We know how you're feeling... who you thinking of~”
-        The muses continue the musical number, yet in your heart you just need to deny these new and fuzzy emotions you were feeling for Izuku.
-        “No chance no way I won't say it, no no. (You swoon you sigh why deny it oh oh) It's too cliche I won't say I'm in loveeee…”
-        After all the ordeals Izuku had to go through to save you, (literally jumping into the river styx to recover your soul) his willingness to sacrifice himself for you was the final key needed to ascend to Godhood, and so that he may join his parents and the other gods in Mount Olympus once more.
-        However, this would come at a cost, if he were to go back to Mount Olympus, that would mean he wouldn’t see you ever again, instead only being able to watch over you from up and above.
-        And so, he chooses to remain on Earth with you, and even without his godly status, he could remain as the striking and true hero he is.
-        The two of you watch the night sky as All Might forms a constellation on the sky just for Izuku. Not only making Aizawa also proud, but also as a sign that Izuku himself- (and your love) was worth seeing in the stars.

Shoto Todoroki – as Flynn Rider from Tangled
-        Ok this is a bit of a stretch and I KNOW IT IS
-        Fantasy au Shoto has a white horse, and Flynn rider befriends a white horse that hates him. that’s the closest similarity these two have.
-        Flynn rider is my favorite unofficial Disney prince, and shoto is my favorite mha boy so let’s just roll with this!!
-        Shoto Todoroki was a lost prince turned thief, and after he rebelled from his controlling and manipulative father, His only way of escape was if he turned to a life of thievery, hiding his identity and straying away from his mantle as the Prince of the Todoroki Family.
-        He was very rebellious and mischievous, yet was also stern and rather monotone at times. He would crack jokes, but they would fall flat most of time and despite being absolutely handsome and looking very charismatic and charming on the outside, he wasn’t the best at picking up any gestures or flirtatious remarks said to him.
-        He approached some thieves before and very innocently asked them how to live the life of a rogue, the bandits laughed at him but were nice enough to give him tips. The first advice they told Shoto was to take up a moniker. So that he wouldn’t be easily discovered or found by security officials. They jokingly called him The Half-Hot and Half Cold prince, because of his looks and his quirk.
-        Not knowing that he was an actual prince. A wayward prince to be specific.
-        Shoto didn’t care enough so he used the nickname given to them and went on his way to a different castle.
-        After abandoning his kingdom, he chooses to live freely by his own means, and making the most of his time as a free man and not as a prince. You only live once after all.
-        He then leaves for the Kingdom of Corona, being forced to create a trio with very unfriendly bandits, Sato and Koda. Their mission was to steal the crown on the eve of your birthday and hope to sell it for an absolutely impossible price.
-        After they successfully infiltrate the palace and steal the crown jewel, Shoto stacks the prized possession into his satchel, betraying Koda and Sato, using them as a scapegoat, and making his way to a nearby forest settlement where he may hide and then move on to the next kingdom.
-        However, he underestimated the castle guards as they were able to find traces of him. Shoto, not wanting to back down from a fight, uses his ice quirk to prevent the guards from following him in any further into the forest. (He refuses to use his fire quirk due to its relation to his father)
-        Knowing that it wouldn’t take long before the castle guards would find him again, he had to go somewhere and hide first.
-        He then sees an obscure and weirdly placed tower in the middle of the forest, thinking that he may take refuge there. And so, Shoto uses his ice quirk once more to elevate himself onto the only open window of the tower.
-        He was about to start adjusting to his new surroundings as he steps foot inside, until…
-        BANG!
-        The last thing he heard was the sound of a clanging frying pan.
-        Unbeknownst to him, he was hit on the head by said frying pan.
-        Shoto wakes up to see that he was tied to a chair and his precious satchel gone by his side. He observes his surroundings to see that he was not tied by a rope, but instead tied using someone’s long and luscious hair. Hair so long that it was scattered all around the room.
-        “Is this… hair?”
-        You appear from the darkness, a very smug look spread upon your face, gripping the frying pan tightly.
-        You were the lost princess of the kingdom of Corona. You were kidnapped by Mother Midnight, and she raised you as your own, keeping you locked in the tower so that she can use the regeneration powers coming from your hair to make herself younger.
-        Each year, the king and the queen release lanterns in the sky on your birthday, hoping for your safe return.
-        It was too much of a coincidence. You know in your heart that the lanterns are meant for you. Yet, Mother Midnight constantly forbids and refuses you from leaving the tower.
-        “Who are you? And how did you find me?” You grit your teeth, interrogating him, your frying pan ready to hit on him if he dares to make a move.
-        Tsuyu, your pet chameleon and best friend was watching the half-and-half man intently.
-        “I’m the Half Hot- Half Cold Prince.” He says simply, barely moving and showing any emotion. You stare back at him, puzzled. What the heck was wrong with this guy?
-        “I mean, your actual name.” You repeat yourself as you slowly continue to approach him.
-        “Oh. I’m Shoto. Shoto Todoroki.” He says plainly once again. “Can I have my satchel back please?”
-        “Nope.” You reply, popping the p. “Why are you even here for the first place? Is it for my hair!?”
-        “He tilts his head in confusion, “Of course not. I was being chased and saw this tower, so I used my quirk and got up here. Now, may I please have my satchel back?”
-        “Hmm… if you say you’re from the outside then… I need you to take me to the lights.” You climb up your room balcony, pulling the curtain away to reveal the beautiful mural you made in dedication to the lanterns that are released from the kingdom every year during your birthday. “Then, I’ll give you your satchel.”
-        He looks at the mural in awe for a moment then breathes a hefty sigh, “Alright. We have a deal.”
-        You untie him from your hair. He stands up quickly and was about to descend down the tower. “I can use my quirk to bring us down-“
-        “Nah.” You hold up your hand in front of him, throwing your hair down and using it as a swing as you glide down with grace.
-        Your eyes meet the grass and you take a deep breath before you take your first step on it and then…
-        “My life will finally begin.” You take in your surroundings, feeling overwhelming happiness about to burst inside you.
-        Shoto catches up to you, using his quirk to slide down the tower. He crosses his arms, at the sight of seeing you jumping around like a little chipmunk who has not seen any land, a contempt look plastered upon his face, just wanting to get this job done and head on to the next kingdom he could go to.
-        “THIS IS AMAZING!” You watch him resting by the tree, leaning on it. You kick a pile of leaves to get his attention as you twirl around in your place, still taking in all these wonderful sights.
-        “Look. We have to get to the kingdom grounds as soon as possible or else-“
-        “It’s (Y/N).”
-        “Excuse me?”
-        “I’m (Y/N). I just remembered that I didn’t tell you that a while ago. Sorry!” You smile cheekily at him and because of how adorable you looked; he gave you a pass.
-        “Alright. Let’s go then, (Y/N).
-        Your adventure was absolutely chaotic. From entering a tavern full of scary bandits, for them to actually be softies all this time who were willing to help you see the lights. When the castle guards track down Shoto in the tavern, the bandits help you escape through a hidden passage, but find yourselves stuck in a flooding cave.
-        Thinking that this was the end of both of your adventures and your lives, Shoto reveals to you that he was the missing prince of the Endeavor Kingdom and you also reveal to him that your hair glows when you sing.
-        Bingo.
-        Flower gleam and glow… Let your powers shine… Make the clock reverse… Bring back what once was mine.” You sang softly, your hair began to emanate a glowing light, as it served as a guide to get you out of the cave.
-        Shoto’s hand was injured due to the very rough and dangerous properties inside of the cave and so, you heal him with the powers of your hair.
-        Once again, repeating the song he had wanted to hear escape from your lips once more, your hair begins to glow as the wound on his palm was no more.
-        He looks at you in awe. Noticing details about you that he hasn’t noticed before. How your eyes twinkled differently, like a star from a night sky. Your smile always radiating sunshine, and your aura emanating nothing but warmth and comfort.
-        He was in love with you.
-        How long did it take for him to realize that?
-        “Are we almost there?” You wave your hand in front of his face and he snaps back into reality. “Ah yes. We’ll be in the village where the festivities will take place.”
-        “THERE ARE FESTIVITIES!?”
-        You reach the kingdom the morning after and began to partake in the festivities. All that Shoto could do was watch and admire you from afar as you danced and make merry with the townsfolk; not until you pulled him into the middle of the dance.
-        He was awkward and wasn’t so used to having all this attention around him ever since he left his royal life, but you guide him well in the dance floor, getting lost in the moment, the two of you gaze at each other’s eyes, and the cheers of the townspeople unfortunately snapping you out of the moment.
-        That night, the king and the queen, along with all of the townsfolk, flock to their boats for the annual cruise and lantern releasing.
-        To surprise you, Shoto was able to snatch and rent a boat. The two of you board on it that night, and Shoto rows all the way to the middle of the lake and get a clear view of the ethereal spectacle that was about to take place.
-        The first lantern, released by the king and queen, floats solely by itself. You rush to the other side of the boat, the boat rocking furiously due to the excitement. Your handsome companion on the other hand, was trying to keep the boat into place.
-        You hold on to the edge of the boat as other lanterns follow suit. The huge boats around you were releasing their lanterns too.
-        You look up at the sky, watching the lamps color the night. It was such a beautiful moment. Watching these floating lights reminds you of a comfort and inexplicable feeling from within. There was something about the light emanating from these paper lanterns, some of them bumping into each other, creating unique shadows, like that of shooting stars who were about to ascend back into the night sky.
-        Lanterns continue to light up the night sky, as if they were like bright dreams. Lighting everyone’s resolve and everyone’s hearts.
-       “All those days watching from the windows, All those years outside looking in. All that time never even knowing, just how blind I've been. Now I'm here, blinking in the starlight, Now I'm here, suddenly I see. Standing here, it's all so clear, I'm where I'm meant to be. And at last I see the light. And it's like the fog has lifted And at last I see the light. And it's like the sky is new, And it's warm and real and bright, And the world has somehow shifted. All at once everything looks different… Now that I see you.”
-        After you felt too immersed into the beauty of the lights, you turn back to Shoto who was holding on to two lanterns that the two of you could release. A loving smile present on his face.
-        You smile back at him, and the both of you release it into the sky.
-        “All those days chasing down a daydream… All those years living in a blur… All that time never truly seeing things, the way they were.”
-        The two of you look up to see the floating lights arise and you were immersed once again. Shoto fixes his gaze on you, admiring your beauty and your enthusiasm to see the lights you’ve always dreamed of seeing. He could do nothing but smile at you, as he’s truly fallen in love. He really has. His heart thumping loudly at the presence and the warmth that you’ve given him. Something that he had been seeking for so long.
-        Now she's here shining in the starlight, Now she's here suddenly I know.”
-        You continue look up. A lantern engraved with a sun symbol approaches your boat, and you point at it, pushing it up at the sky.
-        “If she's here, it's crystal clear… I'm where I'm meant to go.”
-        Shoto knew this was his only chance. His smile turning into that of a frown, as thoughts of not seeing you again came across his mind. He grabs your hand, touching it softly. You perk up a little bit at this gesture, but you smile back at him. Your eyes glimmering love and warmth once again.
-        You hold both of his hands, grasping it firmly yet tenderly. The two of you gaze at each other’s eyes again, this time no one were to interrupt. This moment would just be between the two of you.
-        You notice how beautiful Shoto’s heterochromatic eyes were from up close, the love shown in his eyes could only be for you and you feel your heart racing at that thought.
-         And at last I see the light, And it's like the sky is new. And it's warm and real and bright, And the world has somehow shifted… All at once everything is different… Now that I see you.”

A Family Affair | Euro 2020 Football Fanfiction - BONUS MOMENTS
Surprise!!! I'm back with a select few bonus #bamelia moments!! I just couldn't let the love story of Ben and Amelia die, I hope you don't mind. Love Always, Steph xx
PSA: To all new readers, you don't have to read the series (link below) to understand this, however it would help so that you can understand the preconceived emotions behind the chapter!
Champions Again | di nuovo campioni
warnings; none word count; 1865 writing tools; third person until dashed line, first person thereafter. link to fic masterlist here
They had done it, again. The Chelsea boys were lifting their second team trophy for the year, they had just won the Supercup. This was Amelia’s first competition final with the Premier League giants and if she had her way, this wouldn't be last. She was beginning to get addicted to the feeling of winning, of proving to every little girl out there and every sexist male she had ever come across, that anything boys can do, girls can do better. She was letting her results speak for themselves, she was making history and there was nothing that could bring her down from the ninth cloud she was currently riding.
As proud as she was over her own achievements, she was equally as proud of her friends. Whilst she wasn’t part of their Champions League victory, she knew that this moment was just as special to the team that just loved to win. The scenes before her were ones she hoped she would never forget - the look on Jorgi’s face as he lifted his third trophy of the last few months, the crinkles beside Mason’s eyes as he grinned at the camera that was desperate to capture every moment of the evening, the tinge of pink on the apples of Ben’s cheeks as he stood with his hands on his hips while he watched Amelia give her first post-match tactical analysis to the Sky Sports reporter - proud that she was his girl. These were the moments that made Amelia forget all of the hard times, or rather made her realise that all of the hard times were worth it to see her friends, her team, her man smile.
With every great victory comes an even greater after party, and even though the Super Cup final coincided with the start of the season, the boys still believed that they deserved an afterparty to celebrate. Captain Cesar Azpilicueta had kindly offered the grounds of his Surrey home to host the bunch of rowdy boys, and their onslaught on mates and partners on the Sunday afternoon between the Super Cup final and the first match of the Premier League 21/22 season. Whilst they were under strict instruction from the higher powers of Chelsea Football Club (namely; Thomas Tuchel) to keep the drinking to a minimum and to keep themselves out of trouble, the boys were allowed to be boys for one more night.

“Benj, what are you wearing? I don’t know if I should wear a sundress or denim shorts! Please, I need help!” I shouted out to Ben who was currently somewhere in his large house.
“Why would my outfit be able to help you with that decision” I could hear his voice getting closer, his footsteps getting louder as he began to ascend the stairs up to the main bedroom that I had slowly started to take over in the last couple months.
“An opinion is all I’m after - stop being cheeky mate” I shoot back at him as I begin to stand up from my place in front of his wardrobe. It was still his wardrobe, he hadn’t asked me to move in yet so it was still technically his even if it was half full with my clothes. As I got to my feet, I turned to see him leaning in the doorway with his arms and ankles crossed over each other. Wearing a tee shirt and some denim shorts himself with a cap covering his ungelled hair - a request from me because it was much easier for me to run my hands through if it wasn’t laden with gel...and because it gave me an excuse to push it out of his face whenever I felt like it (which was often).
“I wouldn’t mind if you stayed in that outfit to be fair, however, that would also mean we would be skipping this afterparty altogether and be spending the afternoon celebrating in an entirely different manner” He states staring at me while I’m currently standing with my hands on my hips, staring at the shorts and tank top combo I have laid out on his bed - again, his bed not ours - he hasn’t asked me to move in yet so it was technically his even if it did have the new bed sheets I purchased a couple weeks back with the matching throw cushions on it. The barely-there outfit that I was currently sporting and that had him licking his lips as he pushed himself off of the doorway to walk to me and wrap his arms around my body from behind was a bralette and a pair of his Chelsea shorts.
“Ok sorted, you’re in denim shorts so I’m going to wear mine too. Done ok move get off me I need to change or we’re going to be late” I exclaimed as I pushed him off me with my hips. A bad move? Absolutely not. I got to feel all of him against me and remind him of what he gets to come home to every evening, if he choses.
“Wow what's the rush now Mils? Why are you walking around like you’ve got ants in your pants?” He questioned as he tightened his grip on me and turned me so I was facing him, looking up into his curious baby blues.
“And don’t say nothing, I’ve picked up on all of your tells already” He further questioned as he could see the wheels begin to turn behind my eyes, desperate to come up with an excuse to mask my jitters so I wouldn’t have to tell him the truth.
“I regret ever letting you become friends with Fede, he’s spilling all of my secrets...Ok fine. I’m nervous to see Jack. I haven’t seen him since...ya’know and I haven't spoken to him since I gave him a telling off before international break and Ben I promise you I haven't thought about him once but I’m still worried that there's unresolved anger there from him and I don’t want to get into it again just when we’re getting back into the groove of us and it’ll impact your friendsh-” my rambling was cut off by his lips, which were simultaneously reminding me to breathe between my words and leaving me breathless at the same time. He always did have a way with his lips, the power they held over me was unmatched by anything.
“Calm down love, I promise it’ll be okay. Jack and I have had it out already, a long chat on international duties which may have only been prompted because Mase and Dec locked us in the kit room after our first session, sorted it all out.” Ben reassured me as he began to rub his thumbs over my cheeks and his hands held both sides of my face.
“I do know he wants to apologise to you though - so don’t be surprised if he tries to do that early on in the evening. You know just how awkward he can be so he’ll probably spring it on you before you’ve even put your bag down.”
“Oh great, I’m gonna need to do a couple shots before we leave the house - you’re good to drive right?” I said as I walked from his grasp and down the stairs to grab the bottle of vodka for some good old fashioned dutch courage.
______________________________________________________________
Ben was right about Jack, he had approached the couple only moments after they had arrived at Azpi’s house. Amelia had spotted him making his way towards them so she began to walk in a different direction to Ben, stretching their interlocked hands and letting him go as she mumbled something about needing to put her bag down. Ben really knew both of them too well. Jack gave Ben a hug hello, still in the grovelling stage of repairing their friendship.
“Hey bro, how’s it goin?” Jack spoke as he pulled away from Ben.
“Yeah bro all’s good with me, how are you? Congrats on the move again, million dollar geez you are, aren’t ya? Don’t forget me when you're mingling with Messi in a couple years” Ben joked back with the boy who has been literally a brother to him for the last few years.
“Ahhh you’re jokin me, could never forget a brother could I? We’re basically blood at this point I reckon. Where’d Mils run off ta?” Jack questioned with his arm around Ben’s neck, both of the boys looking out into the garden for the girl in question.
“Right here super Jack” Amelia spoke from behind them. During their brief discussion, Amelia had put her bag down and ran inside to grab herself a drink before walking out to face the music of Jack’s apology. Overhearing how lighthearted he was with Ben, coupled with the reassurance that Ben had provided her earlier in the evening plus the two or three vodka shots she had downed in their kitchen before coming to the afterparty had meant that she left her worries at the door.
“Mils, darlin', you already know what's coming but I truly am sorry...to both of ya ya’know. Benny, we’ve already had it out and it took me ages to get over that black eye but please believe me when I tell ya I am so sorry for treating you that way Amelia. From the bottom of my heart, I am sorry and I regret nothing more than how I made you feel.” Jack could feel himself getting teary whilst thinking about how he made the girl feel, how he made his best mate and chosen brother feel, how he really put a spanner in the works of their blossoming relationship.
“Jack, I’m not going to say it was ok because it wasn't. But it wasn’t just your fault, I also played a part in it that has me cursing myself every day for ruining things with Benj. I forgive you, Jacky.” Amelia spoke while reaching up and wrapping her arms around Jack’s neck to give him one of her signature squeezy hugs, to truly convey that she was moving on from their tumultuous past and hoped that he could stop beating himself up over it and do the same.
Jack had left the couple to return to the table and grab himself a refill of his drink. Ben’s arm had found its natural position around Amelia’s shoulders as they both stood there looking out at their friends. However, Ben was looking down at Amelia. Without missing a beat and keeping her eyes focused out on the yard, Amelia spoke only loud enough for Ben to hear.
“So, you gave Jack a black eye over me huh? That’s hot”
Amelia took a few steps forward before turning to look at the expression on Ben’s face as she continued to walk away from him, backwards. The slight shock turned into a full on smirk as he walked towards her eager to close the gap between them with a kiss. He knew she loved him with her whole heart, but he hoped that she would understand just how much he loved her right back.

I keep thinking about an Evans character that isn't Steve possibly "going to seed" (i.e., Andy Barber really rocking the dad bod, or even Ransom getting a belly). Do you have any thoughts?
what is this, anon? hm? are you trying to kill me? because omg ahhhh dad bod Andy, Ransom with a Belly?? and you ask me if I have thoughts? I'M HAVING THOTS!!! (I haven't seen Chris in anything else so I'm going with just those two)
⚠ loooooong ramble ahead
ok ok let's start with dad bod Andy
maybe his metabolism just slows down a bit with age
his sedentary job
some stress eating
that new bakery across the street with the ~cute barista~ (are we thinking x reader? Ransom? a Seb character?)
whatever caused it, there's suddenly a layer of fat accumulating on Andy's middle
oh something more like a beer belly
all those late movie nights and all that beer late at night
maybe it just barely brushes the tops of his thighs when he sits down
nice and round and firm
rounds out underneath all his shirts and pulls them tight against his belly
maybe he doesn't notice at first, his slacks are getting uncomfortably tight and all his dress shirts are gaping at the buttons, but he's too stressed lately to focus on anything else really
and then he's sitting in that coffee shop again after he's already eaten lunch and he's drinking a caramel latte and eating a huge cinnamon roll as an afternoon snack
he's shifting around and arching his back to get comfortable, but that just pushed his belly more against his shirt and suddenly he hears this ping
and when he looks down there's suddenly a gut sitting in his lap and his button down is gaping over the widest part of it
how did he not notice gaining weight?
but when he looks around if anyone saw him pop that button, he catches the barista's eye across the room
and they come around to Andy's table and put down a chocolate muffin wrapped in a napkin with the barista's number on it
(oh God sorry this is already so long, but somehow I've never though of dad bod Andy, ugh straining the seams of those tailored suits, ohh throwing around that new weight when he gets angry, his thick waist giving him an even more imposing figure 🤤)
Let's get to Ransom thots though!
that boy did not grow up knowing any boundaries, just surrounded by abundance, excess and indulgence
multiple course meals for every dinner
is it even dinner if you don't have at least hors d'oeuvre, appetizer, main course, and dessert?
private chefs available around the clock to cook up whatever he was craving
feeling peckish? have some antipasti: olives, peperoncini, mushrooms, artichoke hearts and bread dunked in olive oil
the Drysdales don't just eat at midday, they lunch
breakfast doesn't exist, they're too preoccupied with looks to eat when they can't show off, it's boozy brunch over business dealings
vanity is the only reason Ransom hasn't porked up yet
but the constant dieting and over-exercising has sparked a gnawing hunger inside him, a craving to finally give in and eat his fill
and when he finally gets over that eternal dating phase and puts a ring on someone?
his well-maintained physique is gone in a heartbeat, his abs are basically gone after the wedding night
a married man doesn't need to draw any looks anymore
it's a happy coincidence that his partner likes Ransom's weight gain as well, because he surely wouldn't have gone back to dieting even if they hadn't
he has to retire that big, white sweater from the movie within barely two months
Ransom doesn't just eat until he's satisfied
his greed extends into his eating habits as well
after he experiences it for the first time, he always eats in utter excess until he is completely full
stomach aching, squirming in his seat, stiffling burps and cradling his distented belly
it looks ridiculous at first, a round ball of food tacked to his front
but his body quickly catches up that little overstuffed belly
he slows down a bit once he finally thinks he's caught up on all those years of denying himself
but a good 50lbs have settled on his body at that point
all wide and heavy, plush fat and soft rolls
ohhh I imagine he'd have the softest under belly, all velvety smooth, striped with stretch marks, but Ransom would take care to use lotion on them every day
and in the metaphorical sense too, he mellows out a bit when he's not constantly hangry and two seconds from a binge
he's still an abrasive asshole on the outside most of the time, but you actually get to see his softer side
and even though your marriage was mostly for each of your families' sake you actually fall for each other
getting very "just the two of you against the world"-vibes, very "mob boss and mafia wife" :D

Chapter 9 : Anticipation
Tumblr media
SUMMARY
Ushijima makes an appearance at your group outing, and you try to ignore his presence. But, of course, it’s easier said than done in this case.
Tumblr media
pairing : ushjima x f!reader / oikawa x f!reader / iwaizumi x f!reader
genre : angst + fluff
word count : 3,344
content : profanity, mild violence, depiction of injuries
tags :  alternate universe - college/university, post-break up, friends to lovers, pining, slow burn
a/n : Is the world so small that Y/N keeps running into Ushijima? Perhaps in this story, yes. This week has been a bit slow creatively for me, I don't feel my writing is the strongest in this chapter. But here we are, things are heating up and I'm happy to provide.
Post Thursday evenings PST, if not latest by Friday.

Everything feels so surreal as you lock eyes with Ushijima from across the table. He doesn’t smile or say anything, he just looks at you with his empty gaze like this is the first time meeting. Ever. Your heartbeat starts to thump faster conjuring up a lump in your throat that cannot be swallowed. Your breathing is shallow and your hands start to sweat as you dig your nails into your legs.
Why didn’t you turn around when your instincts told you to?
Why did you talk yourself into thinking this was a good idea?
However, for some reason, here you are. The sequence of events leading up to this point doesn’t make any sense. Even when you were dating, you wouldn’t run into him this much, so why now? Why all these dumb coincidences? There’s no room for you to heal when you keep seeing him like this.
“Hi,” you squeal, temporarily incapacitated by the confused looks from your other groupmates.
But your high pitch voice produces shockwaves through Oikawa’s system as you quickly introduce him and Iwaizumi to which Sara introduces Ushijima to all three of you. Then it becomes apparent that Ushijima hasn't said anything to Sara about you.
It’s sublime how quickly you push down the devastation bubbling at the surface and you wonder how it is even possible for you to force a smile in Sara’s direction. Clearing your throat you take a seat. Ushijima has stopped staring now and takes a swig of the chilled beer sitting in front of him. Your mouth feels dry from the nerves that are trying to drag your spirits down. If you were going to survive this torture, you’re most definitely not going to be sober. Grabbing the waiter's attention, you order yourself a beer as you feel yourself on the brink of a heart attack.
“You ok?” Oikawa mumbles knowing well that turning to your least favorite drink is a bad sign. It’s very clear to him this evening isn't going to go very well, seeing as you are already on edge from Ushijima’s surprise appearance.
“Mhm,” you hum shooting him a smile. “I’m fine. Totally chill.”
“You know, we can leave,” Oikawa whispers. “You’re not obligated to be here.”
And let him win? you think. I don’t think so.
“No, I’m fine,” you lie, biting your lip. It’s no time for you to concede, you just gotta ride this one out, show him how much better you’re doing without him. It’s the only thing to get back at him for everything so grossly unforgivable that he’s done.
The waiter returns with your drink placing it down in front of you. Nothing has looked so relieving and thirst-quenching before; the cold and crisp-looking glass filled to the top of light amber liquid with a dollop of airy foam. You pick it up and throw it back, chugging the heavy and sour alcohol. Then you think, maybe you shouldn’t have done that as you strike the glass down on the table. Licking your lips, you notice the startled looks everyone gives you at your uncharacteristic action.
“Should we order food,” Sara interrupts the weird tension which segues everyone back to talking amongst themselves.
Your stomach starts to swirl as you’ve come to realize that drinking that beer was probably the worst thing you could do while it’s empty. But as you study the menu, nothing seems to scream appetizing. Not when you can see in your peripheral Ushijima and Sara sharing a menu while discussing what they want to order. It makes you sick.
The restaurant is loud, but your thoughts are louder as you sit there wondering if anyone else can hear them. It hurts to see him here in front of you beside her. She most definitely doesn’t know about your history with Ushijima just by the way she’s acting around him. Sara doesn’t seem maniacal enough to do something so disrespectful to someone she barely knows. For god's sake, she invited you here. Why would she want you here if she knew? To rub it in that she’s Ushijima’s girlfriend. Doubtful.
Maybe Oikawa was right all along about Ushijima not being how you perceived him to be. Maybe, just maybe you honestly, you were blinded the entire time. And now you were finally seeing him for who he truly is.
You were scared to admit it. That if you did, your year together means nothing when it still meant so much to you. But in this case, actions speak louder than words and most definitely Ushijima’s actions are very clear.
“I'm going to step out for a smoke. Do you need some fresh air?” Iwaizumi asks, snapping you out of your thoughts.
“Oh,” you reply looking at Oikawa sitting beside you who's chatting with one of your group members. "No, I better not."
"Alright, I'll be right back," he says sliding out of his seat.
You try to hide your face behind the menu so no one talks to you and your plan almost succeeded except for the open opportunity it gave Sara to sit beside you. Your face pales as she leans in to rasp, "I'm glad you could make it."
"Yeah," you exclaim a bit put off by how close she is.
"I honestly thought you weren't going to show."
It's hard for you to not flash a bitter smile, but you force yourself to continue the conversation, "It took some convincing but bringing Oikawa and Iwaizumi helped."
The silence stretches between the two of you as Oikawa's laugh fills the air. You take a glimpse at him, noticing one of your group members flirting with him. You roll your eyes while looking back at Sara who is enthralled in his aura.
"He seems really nice,” she compliments. "How long have you two been together?"
"Hmm?" It takes you a moment to realize what she’s asking as you realize she's subtly gesturing to Oikawa. And when it clicks you are filled with laughter. “Oh my god, did you just say that out loud?”
The thought of you and Oikawa remotely appearing to look more than friends from an external perspective makes you nearly piss yourself.
"Oh, I just thought, you'd both make a cute couple," she corrects herself with puzzlement written across her face.
When you realize she’s being serious, you pause. “No, we’ve just been friends for a while.”
"Oooh," Sara taunts giving you a very mischievous look. "You know that saying, love is friendship set on fire."
"It's not like that," you nervously chuckle at her comment.
"Alright, I won't pry," she jokes. "But seriously, I'm happy you're here!"
She gets up from her seat and walks back over to sit next to Ushijima. Your feelings are honestly a bit mixed from that conversation. You really wanted to hate her, but she just seemed so genuine.
------
You’re a couple more drinks in and feel a bit of a buzz as Sara goes into grave detail as to why she transferred to the university now . But you can’t force yourself to listen. Your attention shifts to Ushijima smiling softly at the way Sara bubbles with warmth. It’s funny to think that someone else can make him smile like that besides you because you know how hard it is to do so. But it seems so effortless for Sara.
The memory of meeting Ushijima for the first time flashes in your head. To the time in the library where he reaches over your head to grab the book, you were trying to get on the top shelf. Now you can barely remember as the image of Sara takes your place to retrieve the book from Ushijima's hands. She's the new you.
You know you're overanalyzing every single movement Ushijima makes. From where his eyes linger to where his hands are placed, you cannot stop looking as you stay in suspense to what he will do next. You’re close to being consumed by the sudden urge to lash out or cry. It feels like he’s trying to push your buttons as he leans over toward Sara. You're waiting for him to kiss her. Waiting for it to break you. And it makes you sick.
Suddenly you feel a hand on your knee and turn to Iwaizumi who is looking down at you with a soft gaze. It’s odd but you somehow feel this tension between the two of you. You should have known better in that moment, but your mind feels a bit hazy from feeling vulnerable and also the alcohol.
“Is everything ok?”
You feel anticipation fill your chest and you swallow thickly seeing as this is the closest you’ve ever been to him. You look at his hand for a moment, at his long fingers gently grip the top of your knee. You immediately remind yourself of his words the other day, wondering if he intended to friendzone you like that.
You nod, smiling.
“Let me know when you want to leave,” Iwaizumi whispers squeezing your leg.
His face dips down slightly and you don’t know why you do it and don’t know how you had the courage to. But you’re so caught up in your internal frustrations, you dont think before you act. You lean in closer to Iwaizumi and plant a kiss on his cheek uttering a thank you.
As you pull back, his eyes widen. It takes you a second to process exactly what you’ve done.
“Um, sorry,” you say to Iwaizumi, you need to get out of there before you die of embarrassment. Quickly you excuse yourself from the table as you rush to the bathroom and you can still feel Iwaizumi watching you.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
But you find the bathrooms have a long line up and turn a corner as you burst through a door to outside. The cool air hits you making it much easier to breathe. Finally, you’re by yourself. Screaming wouldn’t even be able to help you let out the confusion you feel. This was definitely something you didn’t want to have happened. But here you are regretting your capacity to understand a situation. Honestly, you were definitely feeling vulnerable. This entire evening you were caught off guard and something it makes you do weird things.
“Can we talk?
Turning around, you see Ushijima standing in front of you. He gazes down at you with his unreadable stare that makes you want to cry.
“No,” you say a little unnerved walking away from him. But you’re stopped by him grabbing your wrist, the same wrist the creep outside the club grabbed you with. Still a bit bruised and weak from his grip. You let out a yelp, “Let go of me!”
“Just let me explain,” he begs.
But you’re not listening as you try to wiggle your wrist away-- it’s not a tight hold, but it’s enough that it still hurts.
“Please, let me go,” you express firmly.
He stares at you for a moment and with a deep breath exhales letting go.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you yell, grabbing your wrist. “Moved on already, what the fuck is your problem?”
“It’s not--”
“No, let me finish. You’ve already done enough. I can’t believe you. You could’ve just told me you found someone else, instead, I see you with her all cute and cuddly and now I have to fucking work with her? This is such a--”
But as you’re about to continue your rant, you’re interrupted by a voice.
“What’s going on here?” Oikawa asks, noticing Ushijima standing before you. He studies your face filled with rage while you’re clutching your wrist. “Did you hurt her?”
“What?” Ushijima replies confused.
Then Oikawa’s eyes turn dark, a look you’ve never seen before. And you never imagined what comes next. He grabs a fist full of Ushijima’s shirt pulling him close enough that they were inches apart, barely touching noses. You had to stop them before it went too far but you couldn’t move your body.
“After all you’ve been through this is how you treat her?” Oikawa yells.
“You don’t even know the whole story,” Ushijima booms, forcibly removing Oikawa’s grip from his shirt causing Oikawa to make an aching face.
“I know enough to see that you’re a complete dick. But we both know, I’ve known that from the start,” Oikawa hisses. His eyes are fixed on Ushijima shooting him a scowl while your hand is clasped to your shirt.
“Stop it,” you say, but they both ignore you.
“I think you need to get your facts straight,” Ushijima says staying calm and collected while Oikawa explodes with rage.
“Why don't act more like a man,” Oikawa protests.
Then time moves so quick you couldn’t even see Oikawa raise his fist to hit Ushijima square in the face. Because not even seconds after Ushijima retaliates. You rush over forcing yourself between the two men before a fight breaks, pushing your hands against their chest yelling at them to stop. Ushijima is the first to back away as Oikawa stays resistant trying to push by you. But you take both your hands and press them against him as Ushijima exits back into the restaurant.
"Why are you trying to protect him?" Oikawa cries. You look up at Oikawa whose face is glistening in the moonlight as his cheek starts to swell. His dark eyes lock on you as yours start to glaze over.
"Are you stupid? He could've really hurt you," you wail, trying to hide the fact you're physically shaking.
And he sees it.
"Don't ever do that again," you barked.
Then he gives you his signature shit-eating grin, a look that is nowhere near appropriate from just getting punched in the face.
“Told you he’s a dick,” he smirks, walking towards the front of the restaurant. “Let’s go home.”
“What about Iwaizumi?”
“He’ll take care of things,” Oikawa mutters. “He’ll meet us at home. Let’s go before that blockhead comes back out.”
------
Oikawa called a cab to get back to his apartment, you felt a bit bad for leaving Iwaizumi behind. Especially since you kissed him then left.
Things seemed to grow incredibly awkward between you and Oikawa as he sat in the bathroom cleaning the cut on his cheek from Ushijima’s punch. You weren’t really sure what Oikawa was thinking, but you didn’t really want to ask.  As you gently press the cotton pad to his cheek, he squints his eyes while the burning sensation shocks him and exhales sharply through his nose.
“Sorry,” you mumble and he immediately forgives you with a smile.
He tries to pin his eyes to something that can distract the sting, but instead focuses his attention on the feel of your fingers against his skin. You’ve never been this close before and he wonders if you can hear how fast his heart is beating.
He’s thankful for your patience with him. Most certainly did he think you were going to be pissed, but your reaction was far from what he expected as you kept silent for most of the trip home and even patching him up. Oikawa looks at you to see your frown had deepened. “Are you mad? You look mad.”
You scoff. “No, I’m just tired.” You’re caught off guard by his uncharacteristic concern and almost recoil with the question.
Oikawa sighs, “Your face is screwed up like you’re mad.”
“Tōru,” you scolded, crossing your arm across your chest. You choke on your words before answering, “I’m tired, not mad.”
Oikawa holds his breath and continues to look at you as you continue to make that sullen look. He doesn’t believe you. The sight of you with defeat in your expression makes his heart break. He notices your bruised wrist, still purple and blue, and imagines it probably hurts after Ushijima grabbed it. Then he wonders if he could have done something better to help you in that situation. Even that night back at the club still haunts him. If only he’d answered his phone when you needed him the most then maybe things would be different than now. He can’t stand it. He can't stand that Iwaizumi was there to help you instead. And he's not stupid, he knows you like Iwaizumi. He wasn't blind when he saw you kiss him at the restaurant. Oikawa didn’t know why, but something stirred him that he never realized before and it became very unsettling.
You lay the gauze over the wound and tape it down.
“How’s your hand?” you mumble, checking if the ice pack he’s holding to his fist has subsided any bruising your swelling. The bruising was already darker by the time you got to his apartment and it definitely terrified you.
“It’s fine,” he replies.
At this point, you’ve turned away and started to clean up. There isn’t a lot of blood, but enough to make shivers go down your spine as the image of Ushijima’s fist colliding with Oikawa’s face flashes through your head.
You feel your breathing heave as you try to collect yourself from breaking down in front of Oikawa. But something stops you. Instead of your usual hiding, you feel yourself let go and come undone. One small tear rolls down your cheek.
And then another. And then another. And then another. Until you can’t urge yourself to stop them anymore.
Oikawa freezes as he hears you sniffling. This time you don’t hide behind your wide smile. This time you’re actually crying and honestly he doesn’t know what to do. His intention wasn’t to make you cry, he wanted to protect you. And now he feels guilty for even putting you in this position.
“I’m sorry,” you pant, your voice broken by stifled breaths. “It’s all my fault you got hurt. I should’ve never gone to that stupid dinner.”
There’s this nagging feeling in his head pleading to comfort you. To hug you, to tell you it’s not your fault. His consciousness is screaming at him to do something to help as he watched you come undone in front of him. But why is he so afraid to?
“You were right, you’ve always been right,” you continue. “I’m so so sorry Tōru.”
You pause wiping the tears away that tracked down your face feeling awkward from exposing your vulnerable side to Oikawa. Tearing your eyes away from the first aid kit, you turn to look at Oikawa. There’s pity written all over his face. Your hands curl into fists.
It’s painfully tense as Oikawa attempts to muster up the courage to stand up to comfort you. He doesn’t want to regret his decision but he still hesitates, considering you’re now gazing at him.
“I-- I just,” you stutter, partially because you want to fill the awkward silence someway, and partially because you’re worried you’ve scared him. “I was scared…”
You stare at him.
He stares back.
Your heart feels like it’s in throbbing pain under Oikawa’s gaze.
His stomach clenches as you revert to silence.
Suddenly you hear the front door unlock and Iwaizumi call out that he's arrived. You feel your face burn up as you revert eye contact and lean on the counter to see Iwaizumi in the doorway of the bathroom.
“What the fuck happened,” he yells, visibly unamused that you both ditched him at a restaurant with people he didn’t know. You look at him with glazed eyes unable to utter a single word then that’s when he notices Oikawa’s appearance. “Shit.”
Oikawa’s face turns in a smirk. “You should have seen the other guy.”
“I did!” He protests. “Not even a scratch compared to you. You’re fucking stupid.”
"He hurt Y/N," Oikawa protest.
Iwaizumi's eyes widened looking towards you.
"He didn't hurt me," you reassure. "He just grabbed my bruised wrist."
Iwaizumi sighs, shaking his head. "You have to stop running off like that."
Oikawa watches the intimate interaction of indescribable energy or chemistry that lingers in the air between the two of you. He didn’t like it. Not even one bit.

Chapter 32
chapter list / previous / next
A bright ginger tom padded confidently along the narrow fence, taking in the scents of the morning. Dawn was cloudy and gray, but there were small streaks of yellow and orange poking through the gloomy cover. It wouldn’t take long for them to dissipate and give way to scorching clear skies. Jake normally wouldn’t bother being awake so early, as his housefolk wouldn’t be up to feed him until well after sunrise, but this morning felt different.
Jake had looped the neighborhood twice already looking for...something. He didn’t know what, but he figured he would know when he found it. So far everything was quiet. But he knew when his gut told him that it was a day for going out, he should listen. It had always been right so far--well, ok, it was right at least half the time, but that was a good enough ratio for Jake to take seriously. So, he kept his ears and nose open and searched for anything and everything slightly out of the ordinary.
A pretty gray molly bounded up onto the fence when he walked by her yard.
“Good morning Quince,” Jake greeted her.
She purred and rubbed her cheek against his. “You're up early,” she purred in a honey sweet voice. “Are you going to watch the sunrise with me after all?”
“Sorry, I was just going to walk by the woods today.”
She rolled her eyes “There’s nothing interesting in the woods! What do you want to go there for?”
“There’s plenty interesting in the woods! Don’t you remember that story I told you before?”
“Oh yes, yes, the monster cats. You’re still going on about that?”
“They’re not monster cats Quince! They’re called warriors.” Jake said indignantly. “Well don’t let Nutmeg hear you talking about it again, you know how worked up she gets about it.”
Jake knew his friends didn’t care as much for his stories of the wild cats that prowled in the woods and beyond. And they didn’t believe him about the one he’d met once either. Sometimes even he wondered if he was just manufacturing the memory of that cat. It felt like it had been an eternity since he lived on the farm at the edge of the moorland; the world around him sprawling in every direction, massive and wondrous if his legs had only been long enough to run it. It certainly felt a bit like a dream when he described it, especially to cats who had always lived in a smaller world where you couldn’t see very far without a house or tree in the way.
Not that Jake didn’t like living with Cris and Dusty, he loved them both dearly. His housefolk had always been in his life, though he never really understood what made him suddenly want to take all of their things and leave the farmhouse behind. Jake was happy to go with him, but he couldn’t help wishing he’d had just a little bit longer at the barn near the moors. But as his mother always said, life for a cat simply goes on. Everything changes eventually. His paws would be swept in a new direction, with him simply carried along and adapting with it. Family goes separate ways, one day you only know a few fields and a shed, the next you’re whisked to somewhere completely strange, and so it went. It was bewildering, but also exciting in a way.
Jake had lived in his new home here for moons  He’d explored every nearby inch, including the farther town, and got lost only a few times. It was nice, but it had started to grow a tad...monotonous. And, sure enough, there came an itch in his paws and a tug in his gut that insisted...maybe it’s time to get swept along again. He was restless with the waiting, so he made a point of following the impulse every time. Usually it led him places he wasn’t supposed to be, angering housefolk and strays as he went, but...maybe this time was different.
Jake’s friends didn’t really understand his fancies, but he still tried to goad them into joining him anyway.
“There are lots of birds in the woods this time of day, Quince,” Jake pressed. “You like watching birds don’t you?”
“I like watching birds from my garden, where it’s safe,” she replied, pointedly.
He had promised not to try exploring the woods because it made Quince and Nutmeg uneasy, but it was the only place he hadn’t checked yet. Quince continued giving him a hard look.
“I’m not going in or anything!” Jake insisted.
She narrowed her clear blue eyes a bit, clearly having doubts about that.
As they walked, eventually they heard a rustling below. Someone hissed up at them. Jake and Quince looked down to see a disheveled looking tortoiseshell who walked with a bit of a limp.
“Good morning Nutmeg!” Quince chirped. “You’re not hurting your leg more are you?”
“No, mom I’m not doing any jumping,” Nutmeg rolled her eyes. She carefully clambered up onto a stool, and then a table, to poke her head over the fence.
“You look more ruffled than usual. Anything different go by?” Jake asked.
 Nutmeg broke her leg some time ago tumbling off a roof. She’d gotten frightened by a large bird when she was trying to peek into a new neighbor's garden, but the accident hadn’t stopped her from keeping up her favorite hobby: spying on all of their neighbors. Keeping a defensive lookout, she called it. Or perhaps just being very very nosy.
“Listen, I squeezed through the fence into Tyr’s yard earlier,” Nutmeg said in a hushed urgent voice, “and there’s this dangerous cat walking around!”
“Is this like the dangerous cat that actually turned out to be a little lost terrier?” Jake asked.
“Shut up Jake, that was one time!” Nutmeg hissed. “And yes, I’m sure, Tyr saw it too! It was a big lanky freak all covered in blood. It had probably just killed, and I bet it would do it again! It tried to attack both of us, but we managed to get away. Tyr just left me to scramble down the ladder like the coward he is, and I almost bent my other hind leg in the process.”
“So you have been hurting your leg more,” Quince tutted. “You're never going to get rid of that limp at this rate.”
“Are you even listening? That dangerous cat is still out there! You should both go back to your gardens and get inside.”
Jake couldn’t hide the spark of excitement. This was certainly different.
 Nutmeg glared at him with flattened ears. “I know that look Jake, and don’t you dare even think about it. You can’t go messing with dangerous strays! Last time you did that you almost lost an ear to a mangy old brute.”
“We came to an understanding eventually,” Jake said simply. “I just surprised him is all.”
“Well this isn’t just any stray! This cat wasn’t normal, it was long and gangly and bony, and its claws were huge. A mistake of nature if ever I saw one! So whatever you're thinking, you’d better not.”
Jake blinked at her innocently. “I wasn’t thinking about anything.”
“He was just thinking of strolling by the woods.” Quince chirped.
“Tattle-tail,” he grumbled.
“No!” Nutmeg yowled, digging her claws into the fence in exasperation. “It was right by the woods where we saw it! Just go later! Or better, not at all! Do you have fluff in your brain?”
“It would be a better idea to go home, I think,” Quince said nervously. “I certainly don’t want to meet any aggressive strays.”
Jake sighed. “Alright, alright. Since everyone’s so worked up about it.”
“Thank you.” Nutmeg huffed, “Now get out of my garden, you're going to attract attention.”
Jake waved goodbye to both his friends as Quince quickly made her way back to her own house. He padded onward down the fence. His home was nearby, since he’d already made a full loop of the neighborhood. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to keep his promise about going inside. What kind of cat could Nutmeg have been talking about? She had a tendency to exaggerate, but she did seem very worked up. He could go to Tyr and ask him, but Tyr was...well, Jake didn’t want to call him “stuck up” because that would be rude, but he was sometimes... difficult to talk to. And more prone to exaggerating than even Nutmeg. Whatever this mystery was, he’d have to find clues himself.
Jake always believed his paws would take him where he needed to be even if the path there was bumpy, and that destiny was something that had funny and unexpected ways of finding you. Maybe it was an overly colorful way to look at life or even a little naive, he knew that, but Jake figured he would rather be a little naive then miserable and bored. And as he approached his garden, he became all the more certain his gut was right about today after all.
A sharp scent hit the roof of his mouth and he opened his jaws to get a better taste. Was that...blood on the grass? Jake couldn’t help his curiosity. How could he possibly not follow it? So follow it he did, and to his surprise, the trail led him right into his own yard. Cris would still be asleep. Housefolk hated when Jake woke them up, but he would do it if he had to, in case there really was some sort of danger.
His other housemate, Dusty, had broken off a small bottom chunk of the wooden fence trying to dig his way out (and maybe Jake had encouraged it a bit), and it looked like someone else had squeezed their way through the hole. Slipping through after it, Jake could scarcely believe his eyes.
There was a long, stretched out form sprawled out awkwardly in the freshly cut grass. Skinny, bloody, and scratched up badly. There was dark wet spots on the ground where it smelled like they'd been sick. It was certainly a cat by the looks of it, though for sure an odd looking one. They were rather big, with an impossibly long tail and the biggest ears Jake had ever seen.
A series of memories came flooding to the surface of his mind. The sprawling moors, the scraggly border of the woods, a bewildered black and white face blinking down at him with eyes the most beautiful shade of orange and copper Jake had ever seen, like a brilliant setting sun. Memories from a different world that almost felt like dreams these days.
Jake sniffed the limp form. He was definitely passed out cold. It couldn’t really be him could it? It was too perfect a coincidence. It was absurd! And yet...Tallpaw was there. Of course, it all made sense now, that “lanky freak” couldn’t possibly be any cat else.
 And he was an absolute mess.
“By all the stars!” Jake breathed “What happened to you?”
***
Nutmeg was the last to pull herself up onto Jake’s windowsill.
“Be careful not to put weight on your leg,” Quince warned. Nutmeg huffed in annoyance for the mollys fussing.
“Be quick! You won’t believe it,” Jake chirped. He could hardly keep the excitement out of his voice.
“I hope it’s good, because you’re right, so far I don’t believe it.” Tyr scoffed. Jake hadn’t actually invited him, but the pampered old tom had just invited himself as usual, and Jake was too nice to tell him to go away. The windowsill barely fit all four cats. Jake ignored Tyr’s comment and peered in, eyes bright with excitement.
“I’m telling you, it’s the same cat I talked about that I met when I was younger, I’d know those ears anywhere!”
Nutmeg narrowed her eyes. “And he’s in your house now because…?”
“Well, yesterday he passed out outside and I got Cris’s attention because I knew he would help any hurt cat, and then he took him away and brought him back, and now he’s in this room!”
“I cannot believe your housefolk just brought a strange stray into your house! Neither of you know if he’s dangerous. Jake, your housefolk’s head is as full of fluff as yours is,” Nutmeg exclaimed.
Jake turned up his nose. “He cares about everyone, I like that about him! Now wait here, I heard mumbling earlier, so I bet my friend is awake.”
Nutmeg’s short mottled fur stood on end “Wait, don’t go into that room! What are you thinking?”
“Everything’s perfectly under control, Nutmeg,” Jake assured her as he squeezed through the narrow gap in the open window. This window luckily never closed all the way and it was easy to shove a paw under and get open. Jake leaped down into the room and padded over to the carrier. It was covered in a shabby towel.
Poking his head underneath the cloth, he said as gently as he could “Hey, how are ya feeling? Any better?”
A garbled growl was his response. Well he was sort of awake at least. The carrier suddenly shook violently. Alright, he was definitely awake. Jake scooted back as a long, clumsy white forepaw shot out between the bars and swiped blindly at the air. When the paw got tired and drooped onto the floor, Jake patted it gently with his own paw, and promptly dodged another swipe in response.
He looked back at his bristling friends on the windowsill. “See, perfectly under control. He’ll feel better when he’s not stuck in that box. Hey Nutmeg, what was the trick you figured out about opening these carriers again?”
“I’m not telling you!” Nutmeg's growl was very high pitched. “You can’t let that thing out Jake, you don’t have any idea what you’re doing!”
“Maybe it would be best to be careful, Jake.” Quince agreed.
“Oh nevermind, I remember now.” Jake pawed at the silver lock. It had to slide in some direction...He batted at it, and the cat inside growled in alarm. “Don’t be afraid! I just have to paw at this until it moves.”
At last it slid, now if he could just get a claw around the door….
It turned out he didn’t have to, as a blur of black and white barreled into the door and it flung open, forcing Jake to spring back. A bristling ball of fur and bandages rocketed across the room until it tumbled into a pile of spare towels tossed on the floor. Cris was never very good at cleaning the house. He heard his friends on the window cry out in alarm, and Jake instinctively jumped back up on the tall windowsill, needing a bit of help from Quince to haul himself all the way up.
“There, everything’s fine,” Jake gasped. “Just want to give him a moment to calm down, being trapped in those little boxes is the worst.”
“That’s...really a genuine real life wild cat then?” Even Nutmeg sounded a bit amazed.
“Yep! He’s from the huge field I told you about, he’s the fastest cat who ever lived.”
“You don’t know that,” Tyr sniffed. He hated any cat that was more impressive than himself, with his “purebred bloodline” whatever that meant.
“I do so know it,” Jake argued, “They’re all really big, and they have a whole society with no housefolk to take food from. And we were friends, and he helped me get home when I was lost once!”
An angry pair of blazing orange eyes glared at them, hissing as he tried to stand up, but wobbling badly on his feet and falling over soon after. The vet’s medicine had obviously not worn off as Tallpaw stumbled around the room. Jake heard Quince giggle.
“He’s really as noble as you described,” she purred.
“Be nice!” Jake said. “We all saw how bad Nutmeg was when she came back from the vet after her leg got hurt. They make your head all funny.”
Down below, Tallpaw had gotten frightened by a mirror, tried to claw it, hurt his paw and scampered awkwardly away. “Who’s there?” he slurred. “I’m not afraid of you. I’m not afraid of anyone.” He smacked a stray piece of trash on the floor, but the noise it made when it clattered into the wall clearly startled him. He arched his back and snarled.
“He’s snarling at a piece of plastic.” Nutmeg said.
“He’s just confused, I’m sure I can calm him down.” Jake mewed.
Suddenly, Tallpaw whipped around at the sound of their voices and launched himself at them, attempting to leap up onto a shelf near the window. Nutmeg cried out in alarm. Tallpaw’s aim was unsurprisingly poor as he missed the high shelf and tumbled back to the ground. At last he lay still on the carpet, panting.
“W-well he is...something, isn’t he?” Quince stuttered.
Jake winced. “I’ll er...I’ll go see how he’s doing.”
“Wait, that is that same cat from yesterday, I know it!” Nutmeg called, claws digging anxiously into the old wood. “Jake, he’s dangerous and clearly insane, you can’t just walk up to strays like that!”.
“Well, I’m gonna,” Jake said over his shoulder. “I told you, I know him! His name is Tallpaw.”
“I thought its name was Tal.” Tyr muttered.
Tallpaw was breathing heavily on his side, clearly having exhausted himself from his drunken run around the room. Jake padded up and tentatively touched him on the side. Tallpaw’s head shot up, lurching back to his paws again and barring his teeth, but his gaze was blurry and unfocused. “Don’t sneak up’n me, intruder!” he slurred.
“Oh you're not on about that again, are you?” Jake laughed. “Come on Tallpaw, don’t you remember me? It’s me! It's Jake!”
“W-wh....Jake?” Tallpaw blinked at him blearily, as if he was trying to focus. He swayed back and forth on his paws like a tree in the wind.
“Yes, Jake. You're in my house.” Jake mewed slowly.
Tallpaw looked around again, his eyes focused on the three kittypets muttering to each other outside the window. “They’re laughing at me,” he growled. “I’m getting outside.”
 Before Jake could stop him, Tallpaw crouched and leapt straight at the window. Tyr yowled in fear and promptly fell off his perch. Of course, Tallpaw smacked hard into the glass and fell back down again with a loud thump that shook the windowpane, but obviously didn’t budge it. Nutmeg and Quince were bristling in surprise, but Quince was clearly trying very hard to suppress a giggle.
Nutmeg was less amused. “What is wrong with that cat?” she hissed.
“It’s ok! It’s ok, no one is laughing at you!” Jake said quickly.
Tallpaw covered his eyes and groaned.
Jake pressed his nose against his head. “It’s all ok, maybe just stay on the ground ‘til you're feeling a little less dizzy, yeah?”
Tallpaw’s sunset colored eyes widened again as he looked up. “Jake?” he wheezed, as if he’d only just seen him.
“That’s it!” Jake purred. The wild cat remembered after all.
 “But...but you got eaten by a monster. Where am I?”
Jake cocked his head in confusion. “Huh? I didn’t get eaten by anything, I just moved away.”
“You’re not real. I’m dead, this is just part of the punishment...” Tallpaw moaned and flopped back down, burying his face in his paws.
Jake licked his head. “I’ll give you a moment to rest until your head clears.”
“It’s so bright and loud,” Tallpaw mumbled. “I know buddy, here this will help.” Jake tugged the towel off the carrier and went to awkwardly drape it over the shaking WindClan cat. “There, if you can’t see it, it can’t hurt you.”
Tallpaw only groaned again, but eventually grew quiet and still. Jake looked sheepishly up at his friends while they stared in complete bafflement at the bundle beneath a towel.
Well alright, so this wasn’t the best of introductions.
Eventually the others were shooed away, but they were obviously very hesitant. Jake couldn’t help being a bit frustrated. Sure there had been one or two times….or maybe several times where he assured his friends that he knew what he was doing, only to come home with new angry bite wounds from adventures gone awry, but couldn’t they give him the benefit of the doubt?
 The house cat sat contentedly next to the wild cat trapped in his house, who was still halfway hidden under a towel and making the occasional whimpering sound. Jake blinked fondly at him and sharpened his claws on the carpet to contain a burst of restless bubbling excitement. He had a feeling the next change in his life was about to start.

It’s yearning hours, a little suggestive but not much else
AO3
Gerry wiggles his toes and gives a relieved sigh as he’s finally free from his boots before he flops back onto Nemo’s bed.
Nemo’s bed creaks slightly as it does so, protests yet again that it was never intended for two people, especially when one party is a tall goth but despite the protests it’s largely accepted it’s fate since said tall goth has ended up sharing said bed with increasing frequency. (And judging from things like the shirt he left behind last time, his second best pocket knife that’s been here for around a month and a half read and ‘well loved’ copy of Carpe Jungulum and a few other Gerryesque items  much said tall goth staying over was dangerously close to becoming a habit)
“Long day?” Nemo gives a knowing look. But thankfully it was long day by way of digging through various second hand bookshops chasing up a Leitner and not long day by way of narrowly avoiding death via manifestation of primal fear. “Yeah,” Gerry sighs and stretches out on the bed, “I don’t think I can get back up,”
Nemo chuckles and props themself up “So you’re crashing here again?” “Yeah” Gerry chews his lip slightly, “You… you don’t mind right?”
“Course not, your free to steal my sheets and nearly knock me out of my bed anytime you want,”
“That happened once” Gerry protests, “That was tipsy Gerry who did that, he’s not to be trusted,”
Nemo laughs and then moves off the bed and Gerry tilts his head.
“I’m going to take a shower, whilst the others are out”
(Gerry’s again glad their arrival back at Nemo’s seems to have coincided with their housemates being out for the evening, one awkward meeting with one of them in the kitchen whilst half asleep was more than enough thank you)
Nemo yawns, shucks off their hoodie which lands on the bed for a brief second before it slips to the floor and Gerry’s attention shifts to the ceiling. He hears the sound of a dresser drawer opening and the sound of Nemo digging through clothes.
Gerry yawns softly and stretches out again.
He’s not sure why he looks up but he does and…
Oh
That’s Nemo’s back
Nemo’s bare back.
He swallows. He’s not looking long, he knows that but it does feel like a very long couple of seconds taking in the sight of Nemo slightly bent over a drawer before he’s looking at the ceiling again.
Cheeks warm.
(Actually cheeks warm is an understatement, it’s more ‘cheeks on fire’)
Bodies are bodies, Gerry… Bodies are bodies
He closes his eyes the mantra repeats over and over in his head a few times, it’s true bodies are bodies they just exist and…
But it’s Nemo.
Nemo with stormy grey eyes and freckles across their nose (and as he now knows faint ones over their shoulders) and soft wavy hair and equally soft lips.
And now he knows they have a very nice back and… he could sketch it. He can see it in his mind’s eye delicate lines on paper replicate the way their spine curves as they bend, those two little divots at the base of their spine where he now really wants his hands to be… maybe charcoal would be good for this?
Or maybe their back could be the canvas? Would Nemo let him take some paint and create something equally enthralling on their pale skin?
His thoughts drift from a brush to his fingers, how would they react to that?  What if he ran his thumb over their spine the paint is gone now and it’s just his hands and their back. He learned recently how if he nuzzles or kisses their neck that Nemo squirms would that happen? What if… he kissed there… not just kisses what if he tried to… nibble? Yeah nibble not a bite (Would Nemo let him bite him) soft like but then there’s so much skin there and he could mark them with loveb-
“You ok there big bat?”
Gerry looks up to find Nemo at the foot of the bed now changed into pajamas, (A habit born of sharing a house with other people and wanting to avoid awkward moments in the trip from bedroom to bathroom and vice versa) towel in hand and smirking at him.
“Yeah,” Gerry sits up and clears his throat, “Just fine,”
“I have a mirror you know,” “Oh,” Gerry feels his cheeks turn warm again, as the reality sets in and his throat feels dry “I’m… I shouldn’t have… I didn’t mean-”
Nemo chuckles steps up on their toes to press a brief kiss to his forehead, steps back before he has a chance to retaliate steps out of the room to take advantage of the luxury of empty bathroom and Gerry sinks back down onto the bed with a groan.
(Later that night just before sleep takes the pair of them he cautiously sees what happens if he slips his hand up the back of Nemo’s shirt and his heart skips a beat with the way they lean into the touch)

The Temptation of Regality: A Sense of Belonging {Thorin x Reader}
A.N: So first of all, this is not the big falling out/angsty part of the story, that’s in a few chapters. The troll scene is one of my favorites in both book and movie, and I actually wrote a full separate thing using all the dialogue and stuff from the book and movie but figured that if you guys wanted that you could just read/watch them. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it! Please consider voting/commenting, it really makes my day!
Word Count: 1,786
Pairing: Eventual Thorin x Reader
Warnings: Angst, fluff, Thorin is a jerk
****
Part 1 Part 3 Part 4
Part 2: A Sense of Belonging
“Uh oh.” You paused mid-swing as the sounds of fighting died down around you and looked up to see two of the trolls holding Bilbo. You backed up to stand with your dwarf companions, waiting to see what would happen. As you stepped back, your foot caught on a root and you tripped backward to sprawl on the ground, weapons dropping around you as you did so. You saw a pair of feet next to your head, and you looked up to see the angry face of Thorin attached. “Get up!” he hissed, and you scrambled to your feet, trying and failing to look nonchalant as the trolls reached out and grabbed Dori and Dwalin, tying them onto a spit over the fire. You gulped, praying that they wouldn’t try to fit all of you on it at once.
“Ouch!” you exclaimed as you hit the ground in a sack. A hand quickly clamped over your mouth as you spoke, and, angry you turned your head to see the king-to-be tied in a sack next to you, shushing you. You shook your head and dislodged his hand. “What d’ya think you’re doing?” “If you talk, they might eat us sooner.” “Thorin, they already caught us, I think they’ll eat us whenever they want. Besides, Bilbo’s talking right now!” You listened as he said something about skinning dwarves, causing the pile of them in sacks around you to wiggle and yell.
 Then the realization hit, “Wait. You meant the trolls would eat us faster if specifically, I spoke. You really think I’m that awful that something would eat me just to shut me up.” He wouldn’t meet your eyes. “Well!” you huffed, “apparently you do have a sense of humor, it just decides to show itself at the wrong moments,” and shifted yourself so that you were facing away from him, lying in between him and Balin.
You wiggled in your sack, trying to reach your boot to grab the knife you knew was tucked in next to your sock. As you did this, you bent at an awkward angle and glimpsed a flash of grey between the trees surrounding the clearing. You noticed Bilbo’s eyes flash with recognition as he saw it as well, and silently encouraged him to keep stalling. Then the pile of dwarves around you erupted with cries of “I don’t have parasites!” and “you have parasites!” Figuring it was a tactic of Bilbo’s you kicked Kili to make him shut up. It seemed like Thorin had had the same idea as well, for Kili glared at both of you before it hit him. “Mine are the biggest parasites!” he quickly corrected himself, catching on. You and Thorin glanced at each other before quickly looking away, embarrassed.
You went back to fiddling for your knife, until, with a whispered cry of satisfaction, you caught it between your fingers. You brought it up to your chest and began to saw on the rope tying you in the sack, wishing you had a larger, more efficient blade like one of your daggers. Just as you finally cut through the rope, cries came from the trolls, and your eyes lifted to see them quickly turning to stone, Gandalf standing triumphant on a rock behind them. With a sigh of relief, you shrugged the sack off and stood up, stretching. You turned to Balin and began to cut him free, finishing and then making your way through the rest of the dwarves.
“Y/N, how did you get free so quickly?” Kili asked as you sawed on the rope trapping him. “I mean, the second the trolls were stone you were up with a flash!” “I spent most of the time in the sack trying to reach the knife, it was sheer coincidence that I cut the rope at the same time the trolls froze.” “Ahh,” he nodded in understanding. “Well, it’s good to know that had Bilbo and Gandalf not defeated the trolls so cleverly, we would have eventually been freed by you...” His voice faded at the end of his sentence, and his eyes were gazing at something just beyond you with a look of fear in them.
You stood and turned to see the leader of the company glaring up at you. “What is this about you having the means to free us and not using it?” “I was going to use it, I was just trying to get to it. Also, it’s rather small, it would have taken a while to cut everyone free.” You held up the knife to show it’s size.
“Still, if you had that all along, why did you not cut us all free?” Thorin gestured to your knife as he spoke. “Because I. Could. Not. Reach it!!!! I spent the entire time I was in that sack trying to get to it, and once I did the trolls were stone! There was literally nothing I could have done to help free us, and if there had been I would have done it! In case you didn’t notice, my king, I was also about to be eaten!”
You stomped off towards the ponies, only to realize that, in fact, the ponies were gone. “So I guess we’re traveling on foot now?” Kili asked. Thorin shot him a glare, and his nephew clammed up and hurried to start walking. As the group set off, you lingered close to the back so that you could hear what Thorin and Dwalin were muttering about. “Don’t blame the lass, Thorin,” you heard Dwalin speaking in low tones to his friend. “She couldn’t have freed us any quicker than Bilbo had.” “Still,” the king replied, “she shouldn’t have just focused on freeing herself. If she’s not going to be able to help the group in situations like that then she is utterly useless.”
You felt your cheeks growing hot with anger as tears started to fill your eyes. You had always cried when angry, ever since you were little, but it had never presented itself at a more inopportune time. You were about to turn and confront the two dwarves but paused as you heard Dwalin speak again. “Thorin, you couldn’t have done anything else to free us either. Neither could I. It was sheer luck that Bilbo was smart enough to stall for Gandalf. We should not blame Y/N for not being able to do something that none of the rest of us could do either.” With that Dwalin increased his pace and left a bemused and slightly remorseful Thorin behind.
You collapsed onto the ground in the campsite that Nori and Bofur had picked out for the night, spreading your bedroll to claim a spot slightly separate from where you knew the dwarves would soon be squished together. Sure, sleeping farther from the fire did mean you were colder, but it was worth it to be slightly farther from the snoring.
With a sigh, you slowly drifted off into unconsciousness. You weren’t awake when Thorin, seeing you shivering on the ground and feeling slightly remorseful for his words earlier, picked his way through the campsite of sleeping dwarves to stand over you. He studied you for a moment, hearing the faint chatter of your teeth with cold, and shrugged off his fur coat, draping it over you and tucking it in around your neck, hand lingering on your cheek as he brushed the hair off your face. He smiled as you unconsciously leaned into his touch and snuggled down with his coat covering you.
“Uncle?” Thorin whirled around to see Fili, standing at the edge of the campsite with arms full of firewood. “What are you doing?” “Nothing! I just noticed that the human was cold and figured it would be bad if she froze, that’s all.” “Ok,” Fili clearly did not believe Thorin but was willing to let it go. “If that’s all…” he tossed the wood onto the fire as he said this, making the flames die down and then shoot up fueled by the addition. Thorin bounded across the campsite to grab his nephew by the shoulder. “Listen to me,” he drew Fili close so that he could see his eyes. “If you tell anyone, and I mean anyone, even Kili, of what you just saw, I’ll kick you off this quest so fast, it’ll make your head spin.” “Ok, Uncle.” Fili walked away and settled into his bedroll with a smirk. He eagerly anticipated what you would do when you woke with the king’s coat draped over you the next morning.
You awoke the next day to the sounds of birds chirping and the sun shining on your face. You sat up and stretched your arms above your head, gazing at the canopy of leaves through which the early morning light filtered through. As you did so you felt something heavy slide down from around your shoulders. It was a fur coat. Figuring it was Fili’s as you’d seen him wearing furs before, you walked over to where the golden-haired dwarf was packing his belongings. “Thank you for this,” you held out the coat for him to take. He smirked as he saw what it was. “That’s not mine, Y/N.” “It’s not?” “No. In fact, I believe it belongs to my uncle over there.” He pointed at Thorin, who was sitting on a log across the clearing sharpening his newly found sword. Shocked at this revelation, you questioned Fili. “He hates me. Why would he give me his coat?” “Maybe you should just go ask him, Y/N.”
So you walked over to Thorin and held out the coat. “Um, thank you for the coat. Why did you give it to me.” You were surprised to notice a faint blush on his cheeks as he rose. Shrugging the coat on, he spoke, “I noticed you get rather cold at night. I gave you my coat to prevent that, it wouldn’t do for one of my company to be unable to sleep because of something so easily remedied.” You shifted back and forth with a little embarrassment that he would notice. “Well, I appreciated the extra warmth, I certainly slept better than I have been.”
You turned and walked back to your bedroll to pack it up, trying to hide your sudden happiness. After his words yesterday, you had feared that he hated you, and would never accept you as part of the group. Now, though, you felt a real sense of belonging and acceptance, although you thought you might have felt a little more than that from Thorin. It was probably just your imagination, though. A dwarf would never feel for a human in that way.

Not as planned
Summary:  You always knew Sam needed his freedom. You never meant to change his plans.
Pairing: Sam Drake X Reader
Warnings: No
Words: 1900
In your small city, you walk on the sideway of the principal street. People in coffe shops , cars noise, and wind in the magnificent trees of the street always cheer you up. Your belly feels stretch and you rub it. Breathing and taking the day slowly. It’s been a crazy month and maybe the stress gets the better of you. That pregnancy was hard, and you did not take it slowly. Everything has to be perfect and ready. Having a baby by yourself was a hell of a decision, but you were ok with it. Wanting to be the best mom you could, you work hard to find a writing contract that you could do from home. You would be with that kid every day, he or she never going to feel alone. This baby will never feel abandoned. Not having a dad won’t make a hole in his or her life, you promise, and you work hard to be in peace with it too.
Helena offers you a full-time job chronicle of one of his magazines. Having few adventures with her and the Drake she knows you would be perfect. When you called her two months ago, she was happy to hear from you. Since you broke up with Sam and left the cottage to move into the city, you did not have the chance to see her. She did not even know that you were pregnant. When you spoke with her the last time, she seems suspicious that you hide something. When you make up excuses for not making the trip with Nathan, she did not understand. “Y\N, you won’t tell me you are not even curious about what we would find in Mexico? Nathan has very good contact over there. He will travel with you and introduce you to Charlie Cutter. You’ll do the rest of the research with him. I will pay for everything. You could write an article about all the stories. It would be great for you. And you are so great on the terrain.” “You know, I prefer just the writing now. I had a lot those last years. I could write for ten years with all the things we saw and did. You stop making those trips yourself.” “That’s different, I have a 2-year-old kid now.” She laughs, “what’s your excuse?” “There’s no better excuse for sure,” You mumbled. “But I just don’t feel the call for adventure and risk anymore. This last year a lot happens, and I really want to focus on writing and earn my living without stress to die.” “It seems like I don’t recognize my friend y/n. What you’ve been up to this year exactly?” Helena asks. “Is it about the break up with Sam? You shouldn't  have left so fast; you should not have gone through it alone. Nathan and I was there for you” “For Sam too. I just feel I have to be far from it to recover from it.” You take a second to doubt your next question, but you dare ask: How is he? Sam, I mean, well, you know, is he ok?” God, you regret asking her that. You did not need to know that. “Well, it’s been hard, to be honest. Sam keeps saying he did not understand and reproaches himself the broke up. Sam was sad Y\N. Nathan said he never saw him like this. Even if you explain to him you were not ready for something serious, it felt wrong. That something Sam would have said to you. Maybe you did not sense it, but I think for once he almost believes he could be that kind of guy.” “You know he is not. Sam needs to be free of Helena. He has always been. He told me all the time, family and steady was not for him. I really want to respect him, and that’s why I left. It seems like a dead-end to this relation. I know that in my life I would have wanted more. Before I was too attached, I had to leave for self-protection.” “But still y/n, you left so abruptly, we all been in shock. We lost a friend too.” A flow of emotion emerges, and you feel tears running on your cheeks. “I know, I have to live with that decision. Helena, I don’t want to talk about it anymore, it’s confused me,” You cries “I’m sorry I have to go.” You hang up.
You wrap your French coat around you as the wind blows more. The wind is perfect , you close your eyes to embrace his caress.
“Y\N?” This voice you know too well. It can’t be, you told yourself just before opening your eyes. Sam was in front of you. “Sam… what... how?” “It’s good to see you too” He’s making a small smile. “No really Sam, what you are doing here. You won’t tell me it’s a coincidence?” “I won’t. I need to see if you were ok. Helena was worried. And I need little to have an excuse to see you. It won’t be a problem. I just need to know you’re alright.” He’s making a step closer to you. “So, y/n, are you?” “Sam.” You said softly but a little worried. “A text would have been enough, you know.” As you said that, a gust of wind make your French coat fly around, unveil your pregnant belly. “Woah” exclaims Sam stepping back looking at your belly. He’s now starring at you. “You are… how” his voice is almost inaudible. “How? Well, I’m sure you know how it’s done, Sam.” You can tell he did not connect the dot and you are hearth broken cause you know what’s coming. “I’m sorry, what I mean to say Sam it’s, well…” You lost of the word. It was not supposed to happen. You passed the last 8-month act like everything was ok and now you realize it was all wrong. You cannot escape. You should have not hidden it from him. “You are pregnant… Y/N. I never thought. Who’s the father?” Sam looks completely lost. For him,  you being pregnant with someone else mean the end of you forever. “Sam, I’m 9 months pregnant” You look at him with tears in your eyes. Sam put a hand on his chest, like he felt a knife in his heart, and whisper unsure: “Mine?” “Sam, I’m so sorry I, I was so scared.” Sam doesn’t look at you. He only focuses on your belly. He put both hands on his face, cover his mouth and his head moving in a no sign. “I meant not to be pregnant and I’m sorry if a manage this like shit. You told me so many times how much you love being free. You said you were not like your brother, family man. Leaving everything to find a family. I want to respect you, Sam. I was not sure what I want in life and being with you at that moment feel right. Best moment of my life. When I learn I was pregnant, it scared me you would run away and ending hating you for the rest of my life. And don’t want to hate you, Sam.” You cry. “Sam says something please” Sam approached you. “I’m so sorry y/n” He seems lost but really means it. “What?” you said trying to stop crying “I’m sorry you did not feel safe to talk to me. I’m sorry that I let you think you had to do that by yourself.” You were shocked. That was not the answer you were ready to hear. You move back from him, staring at him. You try to decode the meaning of that. When suddenly, an electric shock in your low abdomen makes you scream in pain. Your water broke on the pavement. Your knee flank and Sam catch you. “I got you babe” One of his arms around you, he pulls you close to him. You look at him. You miss his face terribly. Being in his arm brings you back to when you were together, and everything was perfect. For a moment time stopped. “Y\N, I’m here.” His regard was deep. Sam, still confused but knowing he has to be there for you. Broking up with you almost kill him. He knew he lost the only good thing he had in life. “Sam, you don’t have to be. I don’t want you to feel obligate or…” Another contraction makes you scream. “Ok honey, it’s time to go to the hospital. We’ll talk after” Sam turns around and whistle for the taxi on the other side of the street.
At the hospital, when the nurse asks him if he was the father, Sam looks at you and says with his smile “Yes, Yes I am” You put a hand on his face to caress his cheek.
When you deliver a beautiful baby girl, the doctor put her in your arms and leave. Sam looks at you and was not sure what to do. He was such amazing support during all the delivery, now everything seems so quiet and strange. You put a kiss on your baby girl and turn around to look at Sam. You make him a sign with your head for him to sit next to you on the bed. Sam puts his hand in his hair and slowly approaches and sits on the edge of the bed. “Are you ok?” You ask him softly. “Me?” He let a laugh out. “I should ask you that with what you just did. I mean wow. You are the toughest woman in the universe. Never thought giving birth was such a crazy act. You are amazing.” He pauses and looking at you in the eyes. “You are amazing y/n. What an idiot I did not realize that before.” He’s looking at the baby now. “You want to hold her?” “I would love that very much,” he said in a sob. “You’ll have to kiss me first” Sam looks at you with tears in his eyes. He leans slowly till his lips touch yours. A hand on your neck, he kisses you like he never did. Soft but passionate. He put his forehead on yours and say “I love you” You smile and let tears out. That’s the first time you heard him say those three words. “So it means you forgive me? You tease him. He kisses you again. “I miss you so much, Sam. I’m sorry I hurt you. I love you. I love you so much.” Sam wipe one of your tears with his thumb. “There,” you say “Take her. It’s your beautiful daughter.” Like a treasure, he took her and can’t take its eyes away from her. “From all the things I saw in my life, none are beautiful as you” he whispers to her. Sam feels his heart filled with love like never. “None are precious as you” he continues to tell her. He turns his head to look at you “Nothing is more important than you two now” You put your head on his shoulder. Your eyes closing by themself you are exhausted. “You should rest.” He tells you and puts a kiss on your head. “I got you. I got you both.”

And there was only one bed
Based on the prompt "vacation home + there was only one bed" submitted by the adorable @lokistrk on Twitter! (yes vacation home somehow turned into hotel room kdkslxnlsjxs)
"YOU HAVE TO BE SHITTING ME."
Stephen sighed, watching Tony's dismayed face. Despite the situation, he had to admit his devastated look was quite comical.
Before he could answer, though, another voice made itself heard behind Tony.
"May I know why Anthony is screaming his head off and, more important, why are you two in MY room?"
Stephen scoffed.
"it's more like MY room. I was here first. I'm the one who should ask you this question." As if to prove his words, he showed with a gesture of his arm his belongings already magically tidied in the large wardrobe.
Tony seemed to wake up from his consternation.
"I already said to you, it's MY room. FRIDAY checked for me and everything, there's no mistake.", he said, shaking his head. "Besided, I don't know if you two managed to enter by magic or whatever but I'm the one with the pass for the room."
Loki raised a sceptical eyebrow.
"I'm curious to know how you obtained this", Loki waved his hand, making his pass appear. "Because I'm obviously the one with the true pass."
Stephen made a few steps in their direction, starting to get frankly annoyed. He showed them a third pass.
"I really don't know what game you two are playing but it's starting to get on my nerves." He pointed the door. "So you two douchebag better get the fuck out of here and find someone to help you find your room if you're not capable to do it by yourself!"
Loki raised his hands, ready to fight.
"I beg your pardon?! It's clearly you two who should get out of there, I'm not idiotic like you to confound my hotel room for someone else's!"
With a snap of his fingers he emptied the wardrobe and put Stephen's possessions back in the suitcase. Immediately, Stephen responded by putting back his belongings where they were.
"Don't touch my stuff, it's MY room, idiot!"
"What the hell, Harry Potter? It's mine!"
"No mine, nitwit!"
"No mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Mine!"
"Asshole!"
"Douchebag!"
"You complete moron!"
"You dipstick!"
After a long moment, where they kept exchanging witty, clever and very relevant arguments, Tony finally stopped, raising his hand in sign of peace.
"Ok, ok. Calm down, Gandalf and Saruman. I'll definitely prove it's my room so we can settle this ridiculous argument.", he looked at the two sorcerers watching him suspiciously. "FRIDAY? Can you tell us whose room it is?"
"Yes, Boss." The voice made a short pause. "The room 107 is marked as Mr. Laufeyson," Loki grinned and was going to let out a victorious exclamation when the AI continued. "..., Mr. Stark and Mr. Strange's room on the hotel's registers."
"... What?"
"This hotel room is reserved for Mr. Strange, Mr. Laufeyson and you, Sir."
Stephen shook his head in disbelief.
"I can't believe it, how is this possible?! We were not even informed!"
Loki groaned, this situation was starting to be seriously irritating.
"Who was the stupid incompetent in charge of reserving for the stay?! I think I'll need to have a little discussion with this imbecile."
"For once I agree with you. I have a few things I would like to tell them as well.", approved Stephen.
Tony gulped.
"Guys… It's Natasha who was in charge of reserving the rooms."
"..."
"Oh."
And then there was silence.
A thick and awkward silence.
"You know what... After all, it's a large room."
"Yeah, a very large room. There's enough space for the three of us, no need to make a fuss about it."
"Agree, it's not that important, really, it's not necessary to bother the Agent Romanoff for such silly details."
"Yep. She definitely has other things more important to consider. And it's a nice room, great decoration..."
"Indeed."
After another uncomfortable silence, shorter this time though, Tony stretched his arms.
"Anyway! I'm warning you, I'm sleeping in the middle, I don't care if you fall from the bed!"
Loki frowned.
"No way. It's obviously me who should sleep in the middle"
"Oh, and why so, princess?", asked Tony with arms akimbo.
"Because, I'm obviously the one whose sleep is the most important and you two are too-"
Once again, Stephen sighed. He couldn't believe he had to put up with such morons. It was going to be a very long stay.
"Loki, get the fuck away from me, you're fucking COLD."
"You get away from me, second-class wizard! You're taking the whole space!"
"Nonsense! You're the one spreading yourself out as if you were alone."
Tony turned around, annoyed.
"Can't you two SHUT THE FUCK UP. There's people trying to sleep!"
"Don't stick your oar in, asshole. I remind you you're the one taking the whole fucking blanket!"
"So what?! I'm cold!"
"YOU HAVE THE SIZE OF A SMURF FOR GOD'S SAKE."
------------------------------------------------
"Pssst. Hey… are you sleeping?"
"Shut the fuck up, Stark."
"So that's a no."
"..."
"I'm going to fucking kill you two."
------------------------------------------------
"WHY THE FUCK IS THERE A SNAKE IN THE BED OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE."
------------------------------------------------
"Hey, who's sleeping on my left?"
"Tony… You're the one the most on the left…."
"We're both on your right."
"..."
"WHAT-"
------------------------------------------------
"..."
"..."
"Is he… Is he floating while sleeping?!"
"Honestly, don't ask me…"
------------------------------------------------
"I have no idea whose foot it is, but if the person could move it from my face, IT WOULD BE NICE."
------------------------------------------------
"Is this the good time to warn you I sometimes speak during my sleep?"
"So you REALLY NEVER SHUT UP?!"
------------------------------------------------
"HOLY FUCK YOU FUCKING SOMNAMBULIST ASSHOLE, I NEARLY DIED FROM SURPRISE."
------------------------------------------------
"Does the Cloak sleep too?"
"... I won't even bother answering this."
------------------------------------------------
"... Why is there someone on the ceiling?"
"Hm? Don't worry, it's only Peter."
"HOW-"
------------------------------------------------
"Why… Why is there a damn KNIFE under the pillow?!"
Clint couldn't stop laughing.
"I can't believe you actually put these three together in the same room! You're really devilish."
Natasha simply smirked, satisfied. She took another sip from his cup of tea, quietly listening and observing everyone's reaction.
"I must admit I'm surprised we didn't see them throw a tantrum… I was prepared for a scene, a true storm or at least something… But they didn't seem to react at all.", said Steve, shaking his head in disbelief.
Sam chuckled.
"If you want my opinion, they were too scared by Natasha to dare say anything."
"Maybe… Or perhaps, they were not that displeased with the situation..", suggested the Russian spy, hiding a knowing smile behind her cup.
"Still…" Bruce seemed worried. "It's past 11 am. They should already be out of bed now…"
Steve put his hand on the doctor's shoulder.
"Do you want us to go verify if they're alright?"
Bruce nodded.
"Yeah. Let's do this."
"So? You can see something?"
"How did you manage to enter without the pass…"
"Bold of you to assume I can't open any closed door."
"Shh! I'm trying to hear if they're here…"
Clint opened the door wider, discreetly entering, followed by the others.
"I don't see anything, maybe they're not-…"
"They're not what? Oh-"
The group of curious simply stared at them, dumbstruck, for a few minutes.
"Well… Seems like they got along well finally."
These certainly were the best holidays Loki, Tony and Stephen ever had.
Of course, it had no link with the fact they were sharing the same room and bed.
Of course, it had no link with the fact they woke up tenderly cuddled and snuggled to each other every morning.
Of course, it had no link with the fact they hadn't slept this well in a very, very, very long time.
Of course, it had no link with the fact they kept sleeping together even after these holidays.
And, of course, it was pure coincidence if Natasha later received a box of his favorite rare tea, several new suits perfect for fighting and a whole set of prized daggers. Pure coincidence.
As much of a coincidence as the rooms' repartition.

New Neighbor
Pairing: Sero Hanta x Reader
Word Count: 3.7k
A/N: Hello everyone! This is just a oneshot that I came up with today, so it has no relation to my chapter fic (but I am working on chapter 3 still)! But I have to give credit to @reinawritesbnha for being my inspo. She made me a Sero fucker and opened me up to the wonderful world of toys. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy this and let me know if I should make a taglist for my future writings!
Warnings: 18+ SMUT!! Do not interact if you are under 18, please and thank you!, PWP, ABO (kink), mentions of sex toys, plot twist?
Just one more box.
Just one more and you would be fully moved into your new apartment. You had managed to get a few friends and family members to help you with large furniture, but you pretty much moved all of the small stuff by yourself. It had been a long, taxing day, but soon enough you would be relaxing in your new home. That is... after you unpack everything.
But there was a slight problem.
This last box was big and it was heavy. So there you were, standing at the entrance to your apartment complex, desperately trying to open the door while also not dropping this stupid box. You probably looked pitiful to anyone passing by.
Suddenly, the box was taken from your arms, a literal weight being lifted from you, as you heard a kind voice, “Hey, let me help you there!”
Now free to move faster than before, you whirled your head up to see who this stranger was, finding a tall, lean man with a wide smile now carrying that stupid box like it weighed nothing. You felt your cheeks heat up, but you weren’t quite sure if it was from all of the manual labor you did today or the sight before you. Your brain stuttered for a bit before finally processing what was happening, “I uh… I can carry that! I-It was just the door that I was having issues with…”
The man merely kept his sweet, genuine smile, “Well, I know that! I saw you carry it all the way up to the door, but you’ve been moving stuff all day, right? Allow me to help the lady with her box. After all, I’m sure your arms could use a break.”
Your arms were pretty sore. Plus, you did like looking at the way the man’s arms flexed and strained while carrying your box. You attempted to casually fix your messy hair as you pretended to ponder his offer, “Well… I suppose you can help me. I hope this isn’t too much of a bother though…” you said as you opened the door for him.
The man chuckled as he made his way into the apartment complex, “It’s not a bother at all! It’s especially no trouble to help out a girl as cute as you,” he stated casually, making his way to the elevator and pressing the button with his knee.
The upfront flirting made you actually choke on air. You tried to cover it up by making it seem like you were clearing your throat, thankfully he seemed a bit too preoccupied with the elevator to see the absolute embarrassment that was plastered on your face. Were all guys this upfront or was he just an exception? You let out a nervous giggle, “W-Well, I appreciate it!” you said, too nervous to attempt to flirt back.
Once the elevator opened up, you both stepped inside and you pressed the button for the fourth floor. The man’s brows quirked up with interest, “Fourth floor? That’s where I live too! What’s your apartment number??”
“408…?”
“Damn, what a coincidence! I live in 407! We’re neighbors! I guess we’ll be seeing each other around a lot! Listen, if you need anything, heavy lifting, or not, just let me know! I’m always ready to lend a hand!”
You hummed and nodded, though you were a bit more concerned with how you would handle living next to a man with such a chiseled jawline. You both stepped out of the elevator and walked to your apartment. After unlocking the door, you stepped inside, “Here’s home. Though, I’m sure it looks very similar to your place. You can just set the box down anywhere by the way!”
The man walked in after you, distracted by his surroundings, “Hey… I think you got one of the renovated- Oh shit!” he yelled out, tripping over one of the many boxes strewn about the room and dropping the box he was currently moving, the contents spilling out onto the floor.
Your eyes bulged out of your head as you quickly went to check on the man, “Oh God! Are you ok? That was quite the fall! You didn’t hurt yourself anywhere, did you??” you asked, scanning his body for injuries.
The man was quick to shake his head, “No no, I’m fine! But your stuff… Shit, I’m so sorry! Here, let me clean this up… Fuck…” he cursed, reprimanding himself for not watching where he was going.
You gave a small sigh of relief when he noted he was fine, before bending down to help him clean up the stuff that fell out of the box, “It’s really ok! There was nothing that important in there, so you really don’t have to worry about it!”
Your words fell on deaf ears as the man was currently examining one of the items that had fallen out of the box. It was a green, silicone dildo with a shape he hadn’t quite seen before. It had a weird tip and near the base of the shaft was an almost ball shape knot. He picked it up and started sizing it, almost checking to see how it compared to himself.
You had finally looked up from your cleaning to see your neighbor playing with one of your dildos. A look of horror stretched across your face as you quickly scrambled to come up with some sort of excuse, “T-That’s not- You see, that was a gift, I’ve never even used-”
The man laughed, still examining the toy, “You don’t have to be embarrassed! I’ve seen a dildo and a dick before, though I haven’t seen one that looks like this before… What’s this ball at the bottom?” he asked, genuinely curious.
Somehow your face went hot while your blood ran cold. Was it too late to get out of your lease and move far, far away?? You swallowed thickly as you prepared for the shame, “Um… I-It’s a knot. It’s like a… It’s an alpha/omega thing,” you answered, not really sure why you were exposing your kinks to this stranger.
“...Isn’t that like a furry thing?”
“IT’S NOT A FURRY THING!”
The man laughed and gently set the toy back in the box, “I’m just teasing! I’ve heard of that before… Doesn’t it have to do with wolves or something like that?”
“It’s based on animalistic tendencies, but it’s more than that!” you rebutted, finding yourself wanting to crawl into a hole and die in more and more as the conversation continued.
The man hummed, “I see… Well, I won’t question it any further,” he said as he stood up and brushed off his pants.
You let out a small huff and stood up, finding that you couldn’t quite meet his eyes anymore, “W-Well anyways! Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! You can leave now! I’ll let you know if I need any help!” you hurriedly said, trying to escort the man out the door.
The man seemed more amused than anything as he went along with your pushing, “I can see when I’m not wanted,” he stated sarcastically. Just before he was pushed out the door, he stopped in the threshold, slamming his hand on the doorframe, “Just… One more thing.”
Couldn’t this man see you were busy dying of embarrassment? You shifted uncomfortably, “Yes? What is it?”
All of a sudden, the man closed the open door behind him and trapped you between the door and him. He forcefully placed one hand against the door right next to your head and then used the other to gently grab your chin and make you look at him. He tilted your chin up and examined your shocked features, drinking in the innocent expression, “Tell me… Do you have an Alpha… Omega?”
Your jaw dropped as you stared into the dark pools of his eyes, “W-What…?”
The man smirked, “Did you not hear me, little one? I said… Do you have an Alpha, Omega?”
Oh fuck. You let out a shaky breath as you quickly shook your head back and forth, already feeling a heat building up in your core.
“I see… Well, how brave of you. A sweet, little omega living all alone with no big, strong alpha to take care of you. Though, there’s a big, strong alpha right here… Ready to take care of an omega like yourself,” he purred. He dropped the hand holding your chin and leaned in closer, enough so that his nose was in the crook of your neck. He took a deep whiff before letting out an almost sigh of relief, “Your scent… It’s almost too intoxicating for me… Could it be that you’re in heat?”
You let out a gasp, “W-Wait… How do you know about that?” you asked, unsure if you wanted to know the answer.
The man ignored your query and simply started placing small, feather-like kisses on your neck, earning little sounds from you. He slowly moved his free hand up and down your side, feeling every curve and dip. He moved his kisses up your neck, to your jawline, and ended at the corner of your lips, “Do you want me Omega?”
Your mouth opened, but nothing but small whimpers came out. This is either a joke or one hell of a way to introduce someone to the neighborhood. You swallowed before opening your mouth again, this time coming up with some words, “I… I don’t even know your name…”
“It’s Hanta. Hanta Sero. But that’s irrelevant since the only thing you should be calling me is Alpha,” he said, settling both of his hands now at your hips and looking deeply into your eyes, “So Omega?”
Fuck it. You quickly nodded your head and wrapped your arms around his neck, “Yes Alpha… Yes, I want you. I need you…” you whined, trying to tug at his neck to bring his lips to yours, but he wasn’t budging.
Hanta chuckled darkly, “What do you need Omega?”
“I… I need your knot Alpha...”
Hanta groaned in delight before quickly closing the distance between you and smashing his lips on yours. His hands moved from your hips to the back of your thighs before hoisting you up like you were nothing.
You let out a noise of protest as you pulled away, “H-Hanta! I’m heavy!” you called out, smacking his shoulder as a sign to put you down.
This only made him dig his nails into the fat of your thighs, “One, I think we both know that I can do some heavy lifting. Two, you weigh nothing to me. And three, you’re getting punished the next time you don’t call me Alpha, got it?” he lectured.
You let out a small whimper of defeat and nodded, “Y-Yes Alpha…” you murmured before resuming the kiss.
Hanta growled with approval as he took you both into the bedroom, only pulling away to check to make sure he knew where he was going. He’d beat himself up for weeks if he dropped you like he did that box earlier. He caught sight of the disassembled bed frame and the bare mattress on the floor. It would have to suffice for this time. He slowly lowered himself down on his knees on the mattress before gently laying you down on the bed, all while keeping you entertained with his lips. He pulled away and examined you underneath him. Your sweet parted lips that let out breathy pants, your half-lidded eyes that were fully lust blown, and just your everything was intoxicating to him.
You let out a small whine and pawed at his chest to get his attention, “Alpha…?”
Hanta smiled and gently brushed your cheek with the back of his hand, “Such a pretty omega… I can’t wait to see what faces you’ll make for your alpha…” he muttered before giving you another kiss, this one slow and languid. His slightly chapped lips moved against yours expertly, almost distracting enough for you not to notice the stray hand crawling up your shirt. Almost. You couldn’t help but shudder at the way his hands caressed your skin, handling you as if you were delicate porcelain.
You moaned into his lips as you moved your own hands up to thread through his dark hair. If you didn’t know any better, you’d say this was a dream. Before you could question the reality of your situation for too long, you felt the man above you pull away, urging you to sit up slightly so he could discard your shirt, shortly followed by your sports bra.
Once again, Hanta had to look at the enchanting creature beneath him. Everything about you was perfect to him. He trailed his hands up and down your bare sides before gently grazing over your breasts, immediately infatuated with your perky nipples. He licked his lips before bending down and kissing your neck one more, but this time with a lot more intent and purpose behind it. He licked and sucked wherever he could, placing mark after mark on your neck and collarbone.
You were still keeping quiet for the most part, only letting out soft moans and whimpers, “A-Alpha… I’ve been sweating all day from moving…” you softly protested, though you weren’t exactly telling him to stop anything.
Hanta groaned and only just barely pulled enough to get out the words, “Even better,” before latching himself back on to your skin, taking even more time to lap up every inch of you. He made his way down to your breasts and gave one of your nipples a testing lick, earning a much louder gasp from you than before. He gave a smug smirk, “Oh Omega… You taste so sweet…” he whispered before taking in one of your nipples in his mouth and sucking on it, making sure to give the other one some much-needed attention by tweaking and pinching it.
You let out your first deep moan, “Alpha… Oh God…” You arched your back to push yourself further into his ministrations. You wanted more of his touch. Anything that he would give you.
After finally feeling satisfied with his work on your breasts, he knew exactly where he wanted to go next. He moved further down, placing a few quick kisses down your stomach, moving past the true prize, and giving your inner thighs some pecks as well. He glanced at your face again, your need evident. Finding himself starting to get impatient, he grabbed at your short athletic shorts and underwear and slowly pulled them down your legs, revealing your glistening heat to him. He watched the silvery strings of your need stretch from your pussy to your panties as he separated you from your clothes. He tossed them off somewhere in the room and stared down at his treasure with desire, “Oh Omega… All this for me? I didn’t know you needed me so badly…” he teased as he moved your thighs to his shoulders.
You looked down at the man in between your legs, gulping at the sight. It almost scared you how calm his expression was, but the look in his eyes reminded you of all one thing. A predator hunting its prey. Your chest heaved in anxious anticipation, “A-Alpha, please… I need you so bad…”
That was all it took for Hanta to bury himself in between your legs and lick a long stripe through your slit. He was practically preening when he heard your wanton moan and felt the tight grip on his hair. He took this as an encouragement to go harder. He decided to give your clit extra attention, sucking and nipping at the sensitive bud.
Your thighs clenched tightly around Hanta’s head, subconsciously moving your hips down on his face. If you were in a better state of mind, you might’ve worried about suffocating the poor man. His tongue felt like heaven on your sensitive area, almost making you wish you could keep him down there forever. You felt the coil in the pit of your stomach tighten from his work, “Oh god yes… Yes, right there Hant- AH!” you let out a yelp when you felt an especially sharp bite down there. You realized your mistake and quickly corrected yourself, “I-I mean A-Alpha…” you moaned, earning you an encouraging hum. The vibrations alone almost sent you over the edge.
Hanta quickly entered a finger into your dripping hole, still working his mouth on your clit. He curled and twisted his finger inside of you, making sure to hit that sweet spongy spot. He added another finger, and then another. He worked you with three of his fingers, spreading and stretching your tight pussy.
You could feel yourself getting close. Like really close. He was doing so much that your body and mind were honestly overwhelmed. You kept grinding your hips down to meet his mouth, “Yes Alpha… More… More… There… I…” you tilted your head back, feeling ready to snap before suddenly there was nothing. Your head snapped back up towards Hanta as you let out a frustrated whine, ready to protest and pout.
Hanta chuckled and brought himself back up to your face, giving you a deep kiss as he let you taste yourself. He pulled away ever so slightly, “None of that Omega… If you want to come, you have to come on your Alpha’s cock, got it?” he commanded before pulling back completely to stand up and discard his clothes. As he pulled down his pants and underwear, the cock that was previously imprisoned sprung out, bobbing up and down slightly. His cock was long and slightly curved, weeping pre-cum in anticipation. He crawled back over top of you and pressed a firm kiss on your lips as he lined up with your heat.
You choked at the feeling of the stretch as he pushed in, though it slid in easier than you expected. He sank into you all the way, staying a moment for you to adjust. His chest rose and fell quickly, noticing a lack of control on his face since this started. He let out an intense huff before pulling out and then harshly thrusting back in. He set up a rough pace as he continued to thrust his dick along your velvety walls. His hips rutted up against yours as he peered down at you, “Is this what you wanted Omega? You wanted my knot? Tell me how bad you want it…”
You had long forgotten your efforts to keep quiet. You were moaning, yelling, and cried out for Hanta. You dug your nails into his back as you held on for dear life, “Yes! Hanta! Alpha! I want your knot! I want your knot so so so much! I want you to fill up with your pups!”
Hanta’s eyes burned with desire, “Pups, huh? You want me to fill up that pretty pussy of yours with my cum?” he asked, giving you an extra sharp thrust as you cried out in agreement. He chuckled darkly, “If that’s what my Omega wants… But you gotta cum for you Alpha first… I know my pretty Omega can do it…” he purred, angling his hard and fast thrusts upwards to apply even more pressure on your g-spot.
You felt it again. You were close. Your eyes rolled back into your head as you let yourself get fucked by your new neighbor, “Yes Hanta… Alpha… Yes, I’m so close… I’m… I’m-”
BEEP BEEP BEEP
Your eyes shot open as you woke up in your room, which was fully unpacked and put together. You searched for your phone and quickly shut off the annoying alarm. Your chest heaved as you tried to regain your composure. You sat up and looked around, noting the early morning light spilling through the window and the lack of a certain person in the room. You sighed and threw your head back into the headboard, letting out a frustrated groan. Ever since you moved in a month ago and met your neighbor, Hanta, you’ve been having wet dreams about him almost every night. You honestly felt disgusted with yourself for having such intense desires for a man you’ve only shared a couple of sentences with. You shook your head and sighed. You really need to get out of the house more. Deciding that the night’s events had left you feeling disgusting, you got up and hopped in the shower, getting ready for the workday…
~~~
You stepped onto the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. As the door was about to shut, a large hand stopped it, making you jump. The elevator doors opened back up, revealing the man you see in your dreams every night dressed in a criminally low cut workout shirt and some athletic shorts.
The man stepped into the elevator with his usual right smile, “Gooood morning! Getting ready to head off to work?” he asked as he pressed the close door button.
You kept your gaze down and simply nodded, “Uh-huh. And you? Getting ready for a run?”
Hanta laughed lightly, “Yea… It’s a good way to start out the day! It also helps that I work from home, so I can basically start work whenever. I’m not on the man's time!” He joked, letting out another laugh.
You laughed with him but didn’t say anything further. You just wanted to get out of the elevator as soon as possible. As the doors opened up to the first floor, you were the first one to move, “Well I guess I’ll see you late-”
You were interrupted when an arm stopped you from leaving the elevator, trapping you between the wall of the elevator and… Hanta. Hanta smiled as he peered at you, using his other hand to gently grab your chin and make you look at him, “I just wanted to say that…” he paused and leaned in next to your ear, “The walls in these apartments are pretty thin… Omega…” he said, pulling away with a satisfied smirk before running off and out the door of the apartment complex, leaving you in the elevator to deal with that.
After finally processing what had actually happened, you bolted out of the door, “WAIT! HANTA, COME BACK!”
Summary:
Akaashi Keiji catches glimpses of another life in his dreams. He dreams of fields of endless gold, of constellation of stars that light up the night sky. He hears the echo of birdsong in her laughter, her songs to the gods in the wind.
Author’s note: This fic is a little different from my usual work, so I’m a little nervous about publishing it. If you do like it, would love if you leave a comment / reblog / anything!
Pro tip: Italics denote scenes in Akaashi’s dreams / past.
If you’d like to be included in the taglist, do drop me a msg/ask!
Time passes.
Akaashi graduates from university with top honours and gets recruited immediately by a publishing company. He’s mildly disappointed when he’s dispatched to the manga department instead of the literature department as he originally hoped, but it’s not all that bad, he gets to work with Udai-sensei on his new volleyball manga.
He’s content, all things considered.
His mother is constantly on his case to find a girlfriend - because she insists she’s growing old and wants grandchildren soon. To placate her, he goes on arranged dates with daughters of his father’s business associates, with nieces of his mother’s friends. While they’re pleasant enough, they all seem to come from the same mold - well bred middle class university graduates more interested in complaining about their bosses and talking about the branded bags they’re going to get next.
Once he tried asking one of them about the type of flowers she likes best. His date blinked in confusion at first, but immediately brightened up and she said ‘roses, I guess? They look so good on instagram!’
He did not ask for a second date.
Honestly, he’s not exactly looking to date anyone at the moment. He’s young, barely twenty three. Work is time consuming enough, with his days filled with constantly looming deadlines and chasing temperamental mangakas like Udai-sensei. His mother will just have to accept that grandchildren are very much not in the near future.
But he does feel somewhat guilty -  ‘even Yuji-kun is seeing this lovely girl, auntie tells me,’ his mother nagged last Sunday, so he picks up a habit of buying flowers to soothe her every time he heads to his parent’s home for a meal.
‘Pink carnations for your mother again?’ the florist asks brightly.
Akaashi nods, insisting on paying for the baby’s breath she adds to the bouquet. The florist lets him when he assures her he’s no longer a starving university student, and pulls her gloves off to rifle in her drawer for change.
‘Here you go!’, she chirps, holding out a tray with his change. His gaze is drawn to the pink burn scars streaked across her hands, and flushes when she meets his curious eyes with a knowing look.
‘Sorry, I - uh didn’t mean to stare’, he begins to splutter, but she waves it off.
‘It’s fine. I got them a long time ago’, she replies, a wistful smile twisting her lips, tugging her sleeves down to her wrist.
He bows and takes his leave. He doesn’t spare a second thought on the encounter when he reaches his parent’s house, his mother exclaiming over the little bouquet.
Tumblr media
The table shakes when his colleague slumps into his seat, sighing deeply.
‘Did your boss get on your case for typos again?’ Akaashi asks, his spoon pausing on the way to his mouth.
‘Worse’, his colleague groans. ‘He’s sending me to Hokkaido for next month’s feature on crimes that shocked the nation, and I have to travel all the way up the mountains to some dinky little town without a train station.
‘Hm’. Akaashi raises an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. ‘What’s the feature about?’
‘See for yourself’. His colleague dramatically slides his folder of articles across the table, bumping it into Akaashi’s plate.
He thumbs through the folder. Nakamura Yakeru, the mayor of a small mountain town in Hokkaido, found guilty on a multitude of charges - breaking and entering, causing arson by fire, assault and attempted murder of a schoolgirl, her identity redacted. It’s shocking in and of itself - but there’s something awfully familiar about the man’s face.
He smooths out the creases in the paper, bringing the newspaper clipping closer to his face, and oh -
He knows that face.
His mind echoes with the memories of flinching at the sight of Nakamura’s teeth, yellowed from nicotine and bared in a smirk, the acrid stench of cigarettes lingering on his shirt, cursing whenever that inconsiderate bastard left sparks smouldering in dry grass. But it doesn’t make sense - there’s no reason for him to have ever met the man. He’s never been farther north than Sapporo, a born and bred Tokyo city boy after all. And he doesn’t recall seeing the man’s face on the news either when the crime was committed.
So why would his dreams feature this man?
‘Akaashi?’ he hears his colleague call his name, but his voice can barely be heard over the pounding of his heart in his ears. ‘You’ve gone really white, is everything ok?’
‘I’m fine’, he replies, hastily shoving the article back in the folder. ‘Everything’s fine.’
His colleague doesn’t look like he believes him. Frankly, Akaashi doesn’t believe himself either.
Tumblr media
Try as he might, he can’t get the eerie coincidence out of his mind. And after a few restless nights, he finds himself back in his childhood bedroom, holding the old omamori in his hands. It’s just an inanimate scrap of cotton fabric, but he’s tempted to borrow his mother’s sewing kit to pick its stitches apart, to discover the secrets woven into its threads.
It feels silly being so superstitious, but he can’t help feeling that he’s on the verge of discovering what his strange dreams have been trying to show him - so he tucks the omamori under his pillow, his thumbnail catching on a stray thread, before he surrenders himself to his dreams.
‘Akaashi Keiji’, a cool voice pronounces his name with faint amusement. ‘Back to change the terms of our bargain? ’
His eyes fly open.
This time he’s on familiar ground, kneeling on the twenty sixth step of the shrine he visits with his parents for  Hatsumode, the other twenty five steps below him shrouded in mist. But the woman standing before him is not familiar to him - in fact, she’s clearly not even human, not with her red eyes and pale lips, not with the wisteria trailing from her hair and disappearing into her skin.
That should scare him, but it doesn’t because he can’t discern any malice in her eyes, and the scent of the wisteria is soothingly sweet.
So his curiosity wins out over his sense of caution, and he asks politely - ‘I’m sorry, who are you exactly? And, um. What bargain are you referring to? ’
Her eyes gleam. ‘I’m offended. Don’t you recognise the guardian of the shrine you’ve been praying at your whole life? And as for the bargain you’ve made with me - I thought you already figured it all out by yourself, little boy.’ Laughing airily, she crouches over him, a wooden plaque dangling from her finger. ‘Remember this?’
He reads the words etched on the plaque.  ‘I wish I could have more time. I wish for yesterday to come again.’ Then he glances up at the shrine deity sharply. ‘I remember that from my dreams. Does this mean they’re real?’
‘What do you think?’ Her lips stretch into a grin.
‘Logic would suggest that they aren’t. It shouldn’t be possible to swap bodies, let alone with someone I’ve never met in my life. And yet…’
‘And yet?’ she prompts, tilting his head towards her with the nail of her finger.
‘It’s too much of a coincidence to ignore the fact that I know Nakamura Yakeru from my dreams, so that suggests at least some semblance of it is real.’ He looks at her pleadingly. ‘Are you here to help me?’
She laughs again, the sound ethereal like the flutter of butterfly wings. The sleeves of her purple kimono slide down her wrists, the scent of wisteria enveloping him growing sickly sweet. ‘Help you? Well, since you asked so nicely, little boy, I guess there’s no harm telling you your dreams are real. I granted your wish on a whim, and look how amusing you’ve been!’
Oh gods his dreams are real. They’re real. Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods, they’re real.
Akaashi feels his stomach churn. He inhales a shaky breath.
That means she’s real, doesn't it?
He thinks about the salaciously titled newspaper articles, the violence implied in its words. He thinks about the innocence in her impulses, the whimsicalness of her thoughts. He feels ill at the thought of someone deliberately trying to extinguish her.
‘What happens in the end ?’ he asks, blood surging to his head, slamming his palms flat on the ground for support. ‘What happens to her?’
Sunlight pierces through the fog, and the wisteria spirit starts to fade before his very eyes.
‘Why don’t you see for yourself?’, her voice echoes.  ‘You’ll find all the answers you’re looking for at the shrine in the forest. You know the way there - you’ve been there a thousand times, both in real life and in your dreams.’
He gasps as he jolts awake, hands clenching his sheets.
He’s in his bed in his apartment. Everything is exactly as it was before he went to sleep.
Well - everything except the scent of wisteria lingering in the air.
Tumblr media
Udai-sensei’s eyes bug out from its sockets when Akaashi tells him he’s off to Hokkaido for an impromptu holiday.
‘You aren’t burnt out, are you? Is it me? Is it the deadlines? Don’t quit on me - there’s no way another editor can provide the same input on my new volleyball manga like you!’ he begs, sounding dangerously close to tears.
Akaashi sighs, muttering under his breath about ‘ highly strung mangakas’  but manages to reassure Udai that no, he’s not quitting, he’s just taking a four day break. He thought it’d be nice to visit the flower fields during summer in Hokkaido, and he has an old friend in those parts he might pay a visit to.
So he puts himself on a short flight to Sapporo, and a painfully long bus ride further north into the mountains, arriving at the rural village he’s traversed countless times in his dreams. He drags his luggage past the high school, the  crunch  of wheels on gravel slowly knocking loose memories of bones aching, flesh bruising, from tumbles down the stairs, from falls off drain pipes, from predestined losses against cement floors.
He exhales through his nose when he walks past the florist’s shop. It’s a hollow shell of bare concrete and cardboard shutters, a gap where the signboard should be on the shopfront, a stark contrast to the bustling bakery and  combini  it’s sandwiched between. Thank the gods, he mutters, the blaze of hurt and desperation in Hana-chan’s eyes haunting his mind.
The only inn in the town is serviceable enough, though he’s looked at in askance by the innkeeper when he admits he’s an editor for a publishing company. ‘Another gossip hound ’, the old lady mutters resentfully, and Akaashi has to do damage control lest she assign him the dampest room in the establishment and assure her that he’s no journalist, just a flower enthusiast interested in the lavender blooming in the fields. He charms her enough with his politeness that by the time he checks into his room, she offers him free use of a bicycle to explore the town, and he takes her up on her offer once he drops off his bags in his room.
The summer sun is starting its descent from the sky as he cycles past familiar dirt paths lined with trees, the anticipation in his blood thrumming as he passes sprawling farms he’s sure he’s eaten stolen eggs from, passes the gas station  she  bragged about stealing petrol from. The rush of blood to his head hits a roaring crescendo when he reaches the edge of the woods.
Leaning the bicycle against a fallen tree, he sets off to the very heart of the forest, his feet seeming to recognise a path his eyes cannot see. The deeper into the forest he ventures into, the thicker the branches overhead seem to grow, leaves interwoven into a net that blocks the sun.
The wind ripples over his skin. The trees seem to whisper out to him.
Okaeri, he hears. Welcome home, the Kodama spirits murmur over the rustle of leaves in the breeze.
Sunlight from the setting sun spills into a clearing just ahead, and though he’s almost blinded by the sudden flash of light, he can make out the outline of a shrine, situated dead center of the clearing and breaks into a run.  There it is , he thinks, dropping to his knees, hands trembling as he brushes fallen branches and leaves off the shrine, deaf to the growing whispers from the trees surrounding him.
‘Please grant me your secrets’, he breathes, eyes closed in prayer.
He can feel a pulse in the ground, a sudden shift in the air. Wisteria blooms from the soft earth in his heart.
Oh.
Oh gods.
He remembers.
TRYING TO BLEND IN (PART 2)
WARNINGS: cursing??? WORD COUNT: 1500 A/N: I didn't edit this at all (pls keep in mind that english is not my first language) I just wanted to post it today because it's full moon tonight lmao enjoy (hopefully there will be a part 3 some day)
Tumblr media
It took Sirius a while to recover from the initial shock. This random stranger he had just met at a muggle campsite minutes ago was also a wizard. What a coincidence it was, and how lucky he was that it wasn't a muggle who saw him use magic, he thought.
Sirius stood still for a few moments, looking around the place, then finally he turned to the boy.
"How come you've never met a wizard before? Are you muggle-born?"
"No." said the boy, and then went silent. Sirius expected a longer answer than this so he decided to keep asking questions.
"Have you gone to Hogwarts?"
"No"
"But you know what it is?"
"I do. But I was homeschooled."
Uncomfortable with the direction in which their conversation was going, Remus quickly changed the topic and suggested taking Sirius's things into his new room and then make dinner for them both. Sirius was curious to find more about this unusual boy but he didn't want to seem rude so he simply nodded in agreement.
The two of them spent the next few days at the campsite together. Sirius had told Remus all about the wizarding world, his best friend James, and their adventures at Hogwarts. He could tell Remus was kind of sad now that he realized what he had been missing out on, but for some reason he still avoided the topic of why he has been isolated from other wizards his whole life.
As Remus had plenty of experience with all things muggle, he eventually taught Sirius to set up a tent and use muggle appliances to make food, but they silently agreed that Sirius was not going back to his own tent. They were simply having too much fun together and Remus felt like he was finally making up for all the years he didn't go to Hogwarts with other wizards of his age.
-------
Ten days have passed and Sirius and Remus still had plenty of topics to go through while they were roasting barbecue in front of their tent. It was a pleasant summer evening, and Sirius had been staring at the darkening sky which was mostly clear, except for a few clouds. Suddenly, he felt the urge to tell Remus the origin of his name.
"Wanna hear a story about how I got my name?" He asked out of nowhere, tapping his friend on the shoulder.
"Sure"
"You see that star over there?", he said pointing up at the sky. "The brightest one..."
As he was speaking, the soft wind blew and moved the cloud which had been hiding the moon. The moonlight instantly brightened the scenery. It seemed almost full.
"Well, although I myself am not quite as bright, as you've had a chance to..."
Sirius cast a look in Remus's direction and, seeing his worried expression, he didn't finish the joke he was about to make. It seemed as though Remus wasn't listening to him anymore. He too was staring at the sky, but not at the bright star Sirius was showing him. He was looking at the moon instead.
Sirius hesitated a moment, not knowing what to say. "What's wrong, have you never seen a full moon before?"
"Oh I've seen it" said Remus scornfully, before shaking his head and getting up quickly. "I have to leave tonight. You better pack your things. We're not gonna see each other again."
Sirius remained on the ground, following Remus with his stare as he hurried into the tent. He was pondering whether to go after him and ask him what's up when Remus emerged with a bag full of Sirius's clothes in his hands. He set it before him and proceeded to pack his own tent into a backpack, when Sirius finally stood up and approached him, grabbing him by his arm.
"What the hell is wrong with you? You're just gonna leave me here in the middle of a muggle campsite?"
Sirius stared at him, not understanding the reason behind this sudden change in behaviour. Moments ago they were having a great time, talking about their favourite flavour of Bertie Bott's Beans, and Sirius couldn't imagine what he had possibly done to cause this.
"I have to be alone for a while, that's all." he shook his arm free from Sirius's firm grip.
"Did I do something?" Sirius asked but it was too late. Remus put on his backpack and hurried towards a dark forest that was surrounding the campsite.
Sirius stood still, enraged that this guy whom he had just started to consider a friend, has left him among muggles, knowing how helpless he was without magic.
"Fuckin idiot!" he yelled after him.
A few seconds later, he felt once again the piercing stares of the muggles around him. All eyes were on him and everyone at the campsite must have seen this embarrassing scene. He faked a smile he thought seemed polite enough and sat down to finish his dinner. He was determined to leave the campsite that night and go to James's house for the rest of the summer.
------------
As soon as he finished a cigarette that he had lit after dinner, Sirius got up, took his bag and headed through the same forest that Remus had disappeared into earlier that night. Now that he has calmed down a bit, he couldn't think of a reason why he even ended up at this stupid campsite. He could've gone to James's place right after leaving home, and he would've avoided 10 days of ridiculous drama.
It was somewhere around midnight and he was nearing the edge of the forest. The path he was following has now become broader and pebbled. Just as he was passing an abandoned shack hidden behind some trees, he heard strange screeching noises coming from inside. The noise didn't sound human and he was curious to find out what it was, so completely fearless, he walked up to the front door and tried to push them open but it seemed they were barred from the inside. He walked over to the window, peeked inside but it was so dark inside that he couldn't see anything. With an inexplicable amount of determination, fueled by his infinite curiosity, he pushed aside a couple of planks from the already broken window, shattered the few remaining pieces of glass, and climbed up and into the shack.
Instinctively, he took out his wand, performed the lighting charm, and in the light of the wand he could finally see where the weird screeching was coming from.
In the corner of the dusty, cobwebbed room was a curled-up, shaking figure. Who would've thought. The sound was human after all.
Sirius stepped closer with his wand hand stretched out, his step making the floor boards shriek. The figure lifted its head. Sirius barely recognized him in this horrible state, but as distorted and animal-like as his face now was, without a doubt it belonged to Remus.
"Go away, Sirius!" he screamed.
"What's going on?? Why are you here? Do you... live here?"
"Oh for fuck's sake Sirius, how stupid can you be??? LOOK AT ME"
"I'M A WEREWOLF!"
Sirius was still very much confused. He didn't understand what being a werewolf had to do with hiding out in a ruin like this.
"It's full moon! Get away from me! I really don't want to hurt you but so help me god if you stay here for one more minute..."
"...Why would you hurt me?" asked Sirius trying to sound as calm as possible.
"BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WEREWOLVES DO!" screamed Remus desperately. "We are dangerous! We attack people! We... we hurt them."
Remus was desperately shaking and crying. Tonight's transformation was already very slow and painful and now he had one more thing to worry about. He had completely forgotten to track the days until full moon while he was with Sirius, and he hated himself for allowing to forget what a monster he was. What he wanted most at the moment was to be left alone. He could deal with this by himself, like he always does. He knew he made a mistake. He never should've befriended Sirius. He always scares friends away. But this time, he also risked hurting one.
To Remus's great surprise, however, Sirius didn't seem scared at all. Shocked perhaps, caught off guard, but not scared. He sat on the floor next to Remus, putting an arm around his shoulder, patting him comfortingly.
"It's ok." he said. Noticing that Remus winced as he approached him, he decided to try to lighten the mood the only way he knew how.
"You couldn't hurt me if you wanted to."
Remus turned to look at him, eyes still glossy from the tears.
"You're literally skin and bones, Remus. And I trained Quidditch for 6 years. You stand no chance against me."
At this, Remus's face finally brightened, and he barely managed to suppress a chuckle.
"Come on. I know a place where you can be safe... you know, while you're doing your... wolf thing." Sirius said, standing up and offering Remus a hand to help him stand up. "Remember my friend James?"
born to run
isaac lahey x reader
Tumblr media
running was never your favorite activity, but sometimes it was worth it
probably going to do this like my other series where i just write things in random order over the course of the friendship and relationship
you can read the first part, chemistry, here
There was a running trail near your apartment that you liked to use, normally going evenings you didn’t work to tire yourself out before bed. Until one day, the couple you babysat for scheduled a date night on one of your running nights, so you decided to go in the morning.
To your (pleasant) surprise, there was someone else on the usually abandoned trail. Isaac, headphones in and dressed down for once, passed you running in the opposite direction. He nodded, smiling slightly, but neither of you stopped.
The classes the two of you had together had ended, and with two very different majors, it was unlikely you’d ever have another together. He still texted you sometimes, but it wasn’t as frequent, and quite honestly, you really missed him.
-
“Would it be totally insane for me to start waking up early to run in the mornings?” you asked your sister later that day over the phone.
She laughed, “Go get your man.”
You sighed, leaning back on your pillows, and whined, “I don’t even like running that much. But, dude, he was in running leggings. How the fuck do I pass that up?”
“Wait what does he look like?”
“I’ll send you something from his Instagram.”
Your sister went silent a few seconds before making an intrigued noise, “Wait, he’s hot, holy fuck.”
“I know right!”
“You managed to study with him without making a fool of yourself for an entire semester, I’m kind of impressed,” she told you, a note of surprise in her tone.
“I have some social skills, Jesus.”
“The fact that you aren’t dating him despite liking him says otherwise.”
“You know, I don’t need any attitude from you, you’re just as single as me.”
She laughed, “Fair enough, but hey, you should just text him.”
“I’m going to try the running thing first, I think.”
Your sister sighed, and you decided to be the bigger person and ignore it.
-
What you didn’t realize was that Isaac was having a near identical conversation with his friends that night too.
“I don’t normally run that trail but I got bored of the old one,” he hugged a throw pillow to his chest.
Stiles made a noise from the floor, “Creep.”
“It’s not creepy,” Isaac defended, “it’s a public trail!”
“You don’t even know if she runs it normally,” Stiles added.
“Dude,” Scott interrupted, “let him dream.”
Isaac huffed and threw the pillow at Scott’s head, “Don’t be a dick.”
Scott made an offended noise and rubbed his forehead before throwing it back, “I’m defending you!”
Picking the pillow up, Isaac threw it at Stiles, “And you be nice to me too.”
“You don’t even like running that much!” Stiles threw it back.
Isaac grimaced, “The sacrifices one must make.”
“Maybe just text her,” Scott gently suggested.
“No, I think this is a better idea.”
Scott and Stiles exchanged exasperated looks.
-
When your alarm went off the next morning to get up in time for a full run, you almost said fuck Isaac, fuck running, and went back to sleep, but the prospect of seeing Isaac again eventually overpowered and dragged your sorry ass out of bed.
There weren’t any other cars there when you parked and got out to start your run. You sighed and stretched a little before taking off anyway. May as well since you’d gotten up and gotten dressed. Your breath fogged in the cold morning air, and it was actually pretty peaceful.
You’d gone probably about a mile when you started to hear footsteps in front of you. It wasn’t long before Isaac appeared in front of you, running the opposite direction again. You tried to regulate your breathing a little to make it seem like you weren’t struggling as much as you were.
He made eye contact with you as you passed and nodded at you, lips curving into a small smile. Your heart jumped, which honestly could’ve been from struggling to breathe. When you reached the parking lot, you hunched over, hands on your knees, and muttered to yourself, “At least I’ll be in shape soon.”
-
“I’m not sure it’s worth it,” you admitted to your sister one night over the phone.
She hummed thoughtfully, “Has he still not texted you?”
“Nope,” you said, popping the p, “and I’m so tired of waking up early.”
“Maybe you should just text him first.”
“Nah, I’m going to do the running thing for at least one more week and see.”
“You’re being absolutely ridiculous.”
“Honestly, my calves look fantastic.”
Your sister snorted, “I cannot believe you,” and after a few seconds of silence amended, “well actually I can. But still, I say again, ridiculous.”
-
“Dude, drink with us,” Stiles urged, pushing a beer in Isaac’s direction.
Isaac wrinkled his nose, “Nah, I’ve got an early morning tomorrow.”
“I cannot believe you’d rather run past a girl in the woods at 6:00 a.m. than drink with your roommates,” Stiles huffed.
“And friends,” Scott added from the couch.
Stiles motioned toward Scott, “And friends,” he agreed.
“Maybe I just like running.”
“No one likes running that much.”
“Well, honestly, my stamina has never been better, so can’t complain.”
Stiles rolled his eyes, “One beer, Isaac.”
“Kinda tired actually, might just go to bed.”
-
That was going to be the last week you told yourself, 6 a.m. runs were just not worth it. Your sister texted you every day asking for an update, calling you a coward repeatedly when you had nothing new to report.
Friday morning you decided to finally do something. That way if he said no, you’d made it through the week, and you could go back to running in the evening where you wouldn’t have to see him anymore. It seemed foolproof.
Until you got to the parking lot and were sitting in your car. Both hands gripping the steering wheel nervously, you tried to breathe. You were there earlier than normal, to give yourself time to get hyped up enough to actually do something.
“Ok bitch, you can do it.”
And then, “You’re going to ask him out and he’s going to say yes. And if he doesn’t, you’re going to run away with your newly built speed and strength.”
When the usual time came, you got out of the car and started running. A little earlier than normal, you started to hear footsteps, and you started to panic. You’d planned out exactly where you were going to stop him and suddenly, he’d gotten to you faster? What the fuck.
Isaac finally came into view and you slowed. To your shock, he was slowing down too, and your eyes widened as he pulled a headphone out with a smile, “Morning.”
“Oh, um, morning.”
“Fancy seeing you here,” he joked, hands on his hips.
You felt like you were struggling to keep up, “Yeah, total coincidence.”
“I’ve been meaning to ask,” Isaac started, rubbing his palms on his sweatpants, “would you be interested in accompanying me to breakfast after you finish running?”
“That would be great.”
His face lit up, “Great. I’ll text you?”
“Great,” you parroted.
“Great,” he responded and then cringed, smiling sheepishly, “I mean, good, yeah, sounds good.”
All I Want... 25 Days of Christmas Challenge, Day 24
Tumblr media
December 26th
DeeDee woke up and stretched her arms out. She sat up and looked around at her settings. She was in her bed and could smell him all around her. DeeDee looked down at her hoodie and inhaled. The last thing she remembered was talking to Erik and crying into his chest.
“Oh my god,” she closed her eyes. She sniffed the hoodie again, “Well, that didn’t go as planned.”
DeeDee went to her bathroom and freshened up. She walked to the kitchen and suddenly stopped.
“Good morning Beautiful.” He put his cup down as he greeted her.
“Erik,” she drew out. “You’re still here?”
“I couldn’t leave you like that.” He walked up to her, “You cried yourself to sleep in my arms. So, I put you in your room and stayed out here last night.”
He pointed at her couch. She could see the neat pile of blankets and pillows stacked on one end.
DeeDee looked at him, he was dressed in suit pants, an open button up shirt and an undone tie around his collar. She reached up and buttoned up his shirt.
“Thank you,” she spoke softly, “for everything.”
“Thank you for talking to me.” Erik grabbed her hands in his and kissed her knuckles, “I really like you, too.”
She giggled and lowered her eyes, “I do like you, you know. I just need time to think about things.”
“Take all the time you need. I know you like me and I will hold that knowledge with me as I leave today.”
“You’re leaving already?”
“Yeah, I gotta go back and close out the year for the Centers.” He lowered their hands, “You know you can come visit me whenever. Just let me know and I got you.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” he leaned over and kissed her. “I hate to greet you and run, but I have a flight to catch.”
DeeDee sighed. “And I have brunch with the girls today,” she pouted.
“Are you ready for that?”
“No, but I need to handle it now before it gets worse.”
“Come here.”
DeeDee stepped closer to him. Erik wrapped his arms around her waist, pulled her closer and kissed her again. She reached up around his neck and deepened the kiss. They stayed in that embrace until she pulled back.
“I’m going to need all of that to get through it.”
“Take as much as you want. I got more to give.” He pecked her all over her face.
“Don’t mind if I do?” She tilted his head down towards her.
DeeDee giggled into the kiss as Erik nibbled on her lips.
---
DeeDee parked her car and held onto the steering wheel. Erik wouldn’t let her follow him to the airport, so they said their goodbyes at her place. Now, she was sitting in the restaurant parking lot, getting up the nerve to face her so-called friends. She said a short prayer and got out of the car.
Beverly and Phyllis were already seated at their usual table. They stood up and she waved them off. She sat down and no one said anything. DeeDee ordered some hot peppermint tea.
All three just looked at one another. Phyllis picked up her drink and took a sip.
“We heard about the job.” Beverly opened up the conversation.
“You’re taking it right?” Phyllis asked.
“I don’t know yet. I’ve been thinking about my future and where I see myself.”
“Okay and that means what?”
“You can’t possibly mean Erik?” Phyllis scoffed at her.
“Why would you say that?”
“Oh, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with him. But do you really think you are a good match for him?”
“Excuse me?” DeeDee glared at Phyllis.
“Look Dee, we never thought you would find the person behind the letter. Let alone meet him in person.” Beverly calmly replied.
“You told me to go after the guy since his words had such a profound effect on me, and now, he’s too good for me?” DeeDee looked between them both and pointed at Phyllis. “You were the one who sent the email for me. And since then, you have been acting really fucking weird and I just don’t get it.”
“Dee we love you, but -” Beverly started.
“You maybe, but not her.” DeeDee rolled her eyes at Phyllis.
“But you’ve never really let yourself connect with anyone before.” Beverly continued.
“I was focused on school and making sure I finished.”
“So, we figured this was a good push in the right direction.” Beverly shrugged.
“You’re joking, right?”
Beverly looked down and Phyllis sipped her drink.
“You were supposed to become more open to building a relationship with someone here.” Phyllis mumbled.
“Wow!” DeeDee sat back, “That still doesn’t explain anything that Phyll has done in the past month.” She scooted her chair in Phyllis’ direction, “What’s up?”
“Nothing.”
“You really expect me to believe that?”
DeeDee put her hand up to stop them both from interrupting her.
“I miss one monthly brunch and you cussed me out. You continue to push Brandon on me which is fucking disgusting especially after I told you I wasn’t interested in him. And then I have no idea how to explain that fuckshit you tried yesterday.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Explain yourself.”
No one spoke up.
“I don’t have all day.” DeeDee stirred her tea and took a sip. “You know why and how you’ve been acting the way you have. And let’s be honest, it has nothing to do with me and Erik.”
“She’s afraid you’re gonna leave us.” Beverly softly spoke up.
“So, she acts like a complete bitch to me? She brings Brandon to our family Christmas knowing that I would bring Erik?” DeeDee stared at them, “All of this was to get me to stay. In what world?”
“I didn’t know you would bring him.”
“Save it Phyll. Bev has asked you to come for years and then you finally popped up. It’s not a fucking coincidence.” DeeDee took another sip of her tea. “I have only ever wanted your support while I worked towards my career goals. You know the same unwavering support I gave the both of you.”
“DeeDee, come on.” Beverly said.
“No Bev, you two should be happy for me. Not just professionally but personally.” She gathered her jacket and purse. “It’s ok though. I honestly don’t care anymore.” DeeDee sighed, “Bev, I love you cause we’re family and you have held this crapshoot of a friendship together far longer than necessary. But I’m done.”
“Done?”
“Yes, done. This friendship is a wrap. I need to focus on my next moves and I don’t need the added stress from my friends,” she put air-quotes around friend, “trying to sabotage or annoy me at every turn. I can’t deal with that and the two of you.” She stood up and signaled for Beverly to stand, “See you at the next family event.”
DeeDee hugged her then looked at Phyllis.
“If I never see you again, it’ll be too soon.”
She turned and left them frowning at the table.
---
DeeDee sat in her car and took a deep breath. She pulled her phone from her purse and looked at the time. Erik should be in the air now. Which means she can’t call him yet.
“Damnit,” She tapped her nails on the top of the steering wheel.
She turned the key in the ignition when her phone rang. DeeDee turned the phone over and accepted the call.
“Hello.”
“Hello, may I speak with Deidre Chabert.”
“Speaking.”
“Hi, this is Dean Stephanie Porter from University of California, San Diego. Do you have a minute?”
“Dr. Porter, yes, I remember meeting you.” DeeDee paused and exhaled, “Uhhh, yes, I can speak.”
“Great, I’ll keep this short, but we wanted to let you know we were very impressed with you during your visit last month. Your research aligns with what is already being completed here and we would love to add you to the faculty of our Chemistry department here.”
Deedee pulled the phone away and silently screamed.
“Really?” She rushed into the phone.
“Yes, I will be sending over the formal offer, so you can look it over and make your final decision. But we would really love for you to join us in the new academic year.”
“Thank you so much, Dr. Porter. I will let you know what I decide.”
“Great, I look forward to hearing from you DeeDee.”
DeeDee hung up the phone and cried.
