CECIL TAYLOR CONSIDERED

I can’t really claim this as a reconsideration. Yes, I followed my reading and bought an import, maybe 2 LPs, purple cover, of Cecil Taylor with Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille in the early/mid 70s. I’d put it on for the basement crew but it would come off quickly or just be talked over. I had no basis to interpret the relentlessness. It seemed to be all bleats (Lyons) and pounding (Taylor and Cyrille); for once, my longer is better mantra seemed to betray me.

I listened to Unit Structures once in the last decade and, like Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity around the same time, I had moments where it was at least Ulysses and not Finnegan’s Wake.

Even then, I’d heard enough free jazz—but, probably more importantly, younger players influenced by it and incorporating its elements as seasoning, not main colurse—to have a way in. But free, even as a seasoning, suits me in much smaller doses than avant-garde, to make a finer distinction.

Still, there has been writing about Taylor that has attracted attention, just as it did in the early 1970s when I thought I should spend way too much money on an album I wanted to say I owned rather than played. The notion that he played “88 tuned drums,” the explanations of the logic of his playing, complex and unexpected distillations of from European Tradition Art Music—all that has got me thinking—not listening—over the years.

Comes now the full release of The Legendary, Live Return Concert: November 4, 1973, Town Hall, New York City, adding the 88 minute Autumn/Parade to the solo and quartet versions of the Song of the Blue Js released in 1974 in a vinyl run of just 2000. The commentary remains intriguing—noting those he influenced (Kris Davis, Marillyn Crispell, Myra Melford, Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn—players I visit rather than immerse myself in, I admit. Note his impact on at least some women pianists) and, something I could notice but not name, the compositional technique—motivic variations spread around various cofigurations of the quartet.

Thanks to streaming, I figured I could try it. More than not spending money for limited use, the advantage was more that I would listen in segments more attuned to my ability to absorb what was going on.

The previous Joyce allusion wants development. I have read Ulysses cover to cover once and gotten about 3 pages into a digitized version of Finnegan’s Wake which quite cleverly uses hyperlinks—sometimes virtually every word—to explain the allusions, puns, foreign languages. FW came later—I thought pre-verbal Sam might more just want to hear my voice as a voice and the actual words didn’t matter so much. Reading it aloud, even before the hyperlinks, slowed it down enough to give me a sense. But Joyce was, like Taylor but even more, part of my young self’s swagger. Both are part of my aesthetic, but I look at my pretentiousness of almost 50 years ago with bemusement while mostly blind to its persistence to this day.

But, having read Ulysses once, I have dipped into sections occasionally, cutting it down to size. Sure, it’s literally epic, but it’s funny and brilliantly mundane. And, those elements are ways the book is part of my fabric.

Anyway, I thought, I will never ever absorb the sweep of Autumn/Parade, so I’ll just listen in the moment and appreciate what’s going on. I have lots more jazz in my ears (especially drummers and their magic), but also chamber and piano music in the European tradition. That has given me a more complex sense of thematic development and the conversational elements. Again, I can’t explain the motivic variations or trace them, but I saw their effect. I could in the moment hear the musicians responding to one another. There was the presence of a structure and logic.

With one exception, I’m not likely to go back to this music. But it is a seasoning that will inform my listening. It is relentless and Taylor in particular is full throttle for the full two hours with very physical playing. He doesn’t stand down for others to merely comp, say. He really has 88 tuned drums and he plays no fewer than 7 at any given time. Still there are waves and shifts, themes and variation.

Now, I think I will relisten to the solo Song of the Blue Js. It reminds me of a European Tradition Art Music recital, difficult but fathomable, uncluttered. I didn’t review the critical analysis and equivocation of Taylor’s sources. They might well be more pianistic—Rachmaninov, Liszt, Chopin—than my familiars. But I did check out Beethoven #32 from Daniel Barenboim this time. That’s a nicely gnarled work with intricacies and challenges that has seemed to have mid 1960s Blue Notes elements. But elements, not non stop like Taylor. It was also a long shot, but I also wanted Debussy’s Preludes as there is sufficient weirdness there that I am strongly discouraged from listening to his piano works in the home. While these are more open harmonically and rhythmically and are of course shorter, miniatures, there are moments of density, particularly in the crosshanded sections. And #7 of Book 1 is a sustained exercise in what I was looking for.

Cecil Taylor is a force to be reckoned with and so I have tried to once again nearly 50 years since the first time. I think, oh no not pretentiously that was a young person’s bravado, it requires Ayler, Joyce, Beethoven, and Debussy. But he belongs in there with all the other stuff.

Also you can use custom images as Your OEM logo just one thing to remember that your custom OEM Logo will have to be '.bmp' format and 120 x 120 size.

You cant do any harm to your device by using this software so feel free to try out different setting and just mess around until you happy with information you have entered.

What is Vim?

Vim is a text editor that is highly cofigurable and customizable. It was written by Bram Moolenaar and was first released publicly in 1991. It is used to create, open, read, write, delete text files. It is preinstalled in Unix, Linux OS like Ubuntu and MacOS. Vim is commonly called as Vi editor or programmer’s editor. It is a freeware and available for Windows, Unix, MacOS, Linux. Vi editor is an efficient editor compared to other text editors and is being continuously provided with new features. It includes plugin support which makes it a powerful tool for text editing of files of various formats. It supports almost all text formats and programming language files.

One of the most important feature it provides is the multi level undo operation by which we can perform undo as many times as we want to which is restricted by a single undo in the Windows default text editor Notepad. It provides all the functionalities provided by gedit text editor which is the default text editor in Unix and Linux systems. Vi editor can be used as both a Command Line interface or GUI (Graphical User Interface) Standalone Application. Vim is commonly used for writing script programs. Vi editor has a lot of help options given in its manual which can be accessed by using command “man vi” in Terminal.

How to Exit Vim Editor?

Press Esc key. Once you have done that, vim goes into command mode. Then to exit the editor type anyone of the following commands.

:q – quit vim editor without saving your opened file

:q! – quit without saving and is used to quit when no save operation is performed

:wq – write and quit after saving changes

:wq! – write and quit even if file has only read permission (it can be thought as force quit)

– write and quit. It is similar to :wq! But it does not commit changes if no modification in the file contents is done

:qa – quit all
