Coffeeholics Anonymous: Of Half-Asleep Ramblings and Hallmark Movies

Tim: And she just...she just leaves him! He’s caring! He's rich! He's handsome! He was building a life with her! He took a midnight flight to the middle of ASS NOWHERE just to find her because she disappeared and stopped responding to him—which any sane person would find concerning! Usually to call the cops over rather than to go there himself, but still, that only shows his dedication!

Marinette: Honestly, it's something I would do.

Danny: It's the best way to be sure.

Donnie: The best legal way...

Tim: And-and he shows up and finds her and after all his concern and efforts to help build a good life for the two of them—nope! Sorry, buddy, she was cheating on you with her ex she only JUST got in contact with in all of a week! And she's just gonna upend her life to get back with him while completely ignoring all the reasons their relationship failed the last time! Because "magic of Christmas" apparently fixes all problems! And excuses cheating on your fiancé!

Danny: F-ing Christmas.

Marinette: (Nods) The season of trouble.

Donnie: Preach!

Tim: So then, after finding out his girlfriend was cheating on him—while using his money and making him fear for her safety—despite being COMPLETELY justified in going OFF, the now Ex Fiancé just bows out! Like somehow HE'S the bad guy in the situation! Because who is he to stand in the way of the "magic of Christmas"?

Danny: Clearly the unsung hero!

Marinette: Let the man go off! He's earned it!

Donnie: I've had to block that channel at home for this exact reason. But don't tell Mikey.

(Shift over to see Mikey is present in the group, dressed as Doctor Feelings.)

Mikey: (Eye twitching) That's very good to know. But guys, this group is was set up here to talk about your real problem.

Group: ...

Mikey: Remember?

Group: ...

Mikey: The reason we're all here?

Group: ...

Mikey: The problem that unites you?

Danny: Christmas?

Mikey: No.

Tim: Horrible Hallmark Movies?

Mikey: No.

Donnie: People trying to drag us from our comfort zones to force us into barbaric conditions. Like lack of electricity? Or coffee?

Mikey: No!

Marinette: Bad writing dictating problematic events of our lives?

Group: (Murmurs and nods in agreement)

Mikey: NO! This group is about your addiction to coffee!

(A long pause.)

Marinette: ...can the magic of Christmas get us coffee?

Mikey: NO!

Marinette: Then truly Hallmark Movies have failed us in every way possible.

Mikey: Would you all please stay focused?

Danny: Maybe we could focus if somebody let us have COFFEE!

Coffee Anonymous 😎 First time poster and I'm a coffeeholic, it's been 10 minutes since my last drink...So I bought a bottomless portafilter for my Gaggia Classic, and I can't get away with the taste. Same beans, same grind, same tamp, standard pressure etc . What am I doing wrong?Also here's a little vid I knocked up last week after my machine went pop. A cup of coffee at any time of the day was clearly something that the doctor required; it was his sort of fuel to get him through the day and through all the stuff he had to do. As unhealthy as it may be, Tadamusa does not plan to stop any time soon. 

So he drinks some of the bitter liquid and lets out a soft sigh that drifts out between his smiling lips.

My mind was somewhere between awake and asleep. That thin line where your senses capture your surroundings just enough to hear what's going on around you, but only an inch away from falling back into unconsciousness.

"Marriah?" My voice reached for the woman, although it probably sounded more like a mumble than a proper word.

"Hm?" The sound of fingers against the keyboard stopped. "Did you said anything?"

The words tried to make sense out of my mouth while my body slowly falled back into wakefulness. The world started gaining shapes, and an indistinguishable image came into focus, making me realize I had fallen asleep with my glasses on.

"Why are you awake?" I asked, sitting in bed.

Marriah reached for the mug near her, taking a sip of the hot beverage that at this point I just assumed it was coffee.

"Couldn't sleep." She shrugged like it was nothing.

"Why?" I yawned, hiding my mouth behind my hand.

"I don't know, I just guess insomnia really likes me." Her eyebrows lifted lightly, as accepting her fate of never sleeping again.

My head shook in disapprovement, and I sighed.

"Stop drinking coffee, to begin with."

The grip on the mug strengthened.

"Coffee makes it better."

"No, seriously, stop drinking it. Turn off the computer and come here." I tapped at the empty space near me. "Don't make me go there and carry you to bed. I'm taller than you."

"One centimeter taller than me!"

"Still taller than you." I smiled innocently.

She took a few seconds before taking her other earbud off. My eyes blinked heavily as I watched her save her files and turn off the computer. I couldn't help but roll my eyes when she chugged the rest of the coffee on her mug.

"Your addiction to coffee is not even healthy. I'm going to put you in coffeeholics anonymous." I joked, laying again and taking off my glasses to rest them on the nightstand.

A grin crossed her face as she turned off the bedside lamp. The warmth of her body made itself present the moment she laid down.

"I don't know what you're planning, but-"

"Shhhh, I'm gonna take you down on the old cafuné way." I turned to my side, looking at her. "Turn around.'

"But-"

"Turn around. Is sleep time."

She hesitantly turned around and I faced the back of her head.

"Excuse me." I asked, before letting my fingers touch the intersection area between the nape and the neck itself.

The tip of the nails were as soft as a flap of a butterfly's wings. It moved up silently, entering the hair smoothly, and playing betweens the hair locks.

It was a light movement, moving up and down. The gentleness on the touch guided the way, touching the skin and the hair in a unique way.

I let the moment sit for a few minutes, playing with the hair in the darkness and hearing the breathings in the quietude of the night.

"M?" My voice cut the silence in a whisper about fifteen minutes later.

No words or mumble came back at me, and I allowed myself to hear the muted breathing of my asleep friend next to me.

"Good night, Marriah."

Soooo....because I am horrible...

After too many all-nighters because of their respective villains and conflicts, certain individuals need coffee to function. Unfortunately, the well-meaning but misguided efforts of their loved ones have resulted in a complete lack of that precious life-giving substance.

...and some sort of group therapy because of the claim that they “need an intervention” and “we’re doing this because we love you”.

Marinette: If they really loved me, they'd let me drink my coffee in peace! It's how I live!

Donnie: Mood.

Tim: Can't we just steal some from the other meeting next door? They're supposed to always have coffee at those things.

Donnie: Oh, I tried. They refused, saying it was "for our own good", while chugging the entire liter themselves.

Marinette: Bastards.

Donnie: Which is why they're also going on my "List". Right before Raph but after the FDA for spreading its horrible horrible LIES.

Marinette: You would put your brother on your list?

Donnie: Good point. I’ll replace Raph with Leo.

Marinette: Why?

Donnie: Well, I’m not going to put Mikey on the list.

Tim: ...but it’s literally his fault we’re here.

Donnie: Mayhaps, but I choose to blame Leo anyway.

Tim: Why?

Donnie: Spite, mostly.

Is it weird to hang out in cafes alone most of the time?

Not at all

In fact, I have found it relieving.

I’m writing this while sitting at Katinat cafe in HCMC.

Before I move to Ho Chi Minh city from Dalat, I was the kind of girl who even goes the toilet with a group of friends. But now, I’m totally comfortable doing all things on my own. Unlike my hometown, Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon is not the place to wandering around. It’s a crowded city with an insane traffic.

At being said, I’m out of my drink. One thing I can’t stand is coffee, especially here in this hot, humid subtropical city. I used to be a coffeeholic until I learned that it causes stains on my teeth.

Coffee shop is one of my best places for studying, working, reading or “people-watching”. A quiet coffee shop, that has free wifi and plenty of electric outlets is just about my most favorite place in the world, at least if I want to be alone and to concentrate. But part of it is sure that I am relaxed and recharged by being an anonymous, free to watch people and be watched but with no one making demands on me and me not asking any of them.
