Borderline
Previous Chapter - Masterlist - Next Chapter
»»-------¤-------««
»»-------¤-------««
My strides were shorter compared to the men on the tarmac, and I ignored the wandering eyes of the other soldiers when they took notice of me. I had just gotten back from a stealth mission in Al Mazrah, taking point with Commander Phillip Graves to initiate a missile strike against General Ghorbrani, making sure the area was free of enemy activity before the strike was approved. After that, I accompanied Laswell to Amsterdam to rally up with Captain Price and Sergeant Garrick of Task Force 141. That was my second time working with Captain Price, but my first-time meeting Sergeant Kyle Garrick. Both were amazing men, and we seemed to work together well, and eventually, grew closer together enough to make jokes and open up about our personal lives. Price joked that I was his long-lost daughter because he didn't realize how overprotective he was of me, and Garrick joked that I reminded him of one of the comrades of his team because of my morbid jokes and stern attitude. "She's just like Ghost, Cap", he would say, and Price would simply reply, "The only difference is that she's pretty and I've seen Simon's face twice in twenty years."
Who was this Ghost person? Maybe there was a reason he got his name, and if Price himself said that he had only seen Ghost's face twice in twenty years, I assume that there was a certain reason.
I never got comfortable being home after a mission and probably never would. I lived on my father's ranch in Wyoming outside of Cody. It was a ranch that had been in my family for seven generations, and it was a place I could call home for the rest of my life, with or without a spouse to share it with. I've been in the military for going on fifteen years, starting my career in the fall of 2001 in the United States Marine Corps. I climbed through the ranks and eventually landed my spot in the C.I.A, being Kate Laswell's second in command. The job (and benefits) was great, but it all came with a price.
Being a Case Officer in the C.I.A came with excruciating training as it would be something that I had never done before. I specialized in hand-to-hand combat, using the elements of Thai Boxing to my advantage as I was only a woman standing 5'3", using items around me to my advantage to not only conserve ammunition, but nine times out of ten, my stealth missions limited me on the number of weapons I could hold on me.
This time, I was assigned on a special mission – to help track down Hassan Zyani as well as the two additional missiles that followed the one that was already found.
And to find out how they ended up in enemy hands in the first place.
"Ah, Kiera, it's so nice to see you again!" Alejandro smiled at me, opening his arms for an embrace. I didn't resist as it had been a long time since I had seen Alejandro and Rudolfo. We had worked closely about a year ago, helping his team of Mexican Special Forces secure the border when there was a major migrant problem.
"You too, Alejandro!" I laughed. "How've you been? Still in one piece, I see!"
"You should know that by now!" He laughed, his hand resting on the small of my back before releasing his grip on me. I moved to greet Rudolfo with a side-hug, asking him how he was, and I could notice that heat rose in his cheeks. He had always been the quiet, reserved type, and I respected that, but I couldn't help but pry into him a bit after getting to know him because he was hilarious when he would open up, though he was quick to shut down when he told a joke that nobody caught onto.
"You two ready to get after it?"
"Like always, señora. Laswell says that she's suspecting our target to be moving across the southern border."
"That's exactly what they're going to do. We need to get a small team together and head to the river."
"Aye. Rudy, go get the car."
Rudolfo nodded, heading to the hangar that housed the base's transportation.
Within an hour, we made it to the river that separated the United States and Mexico, getting a call midway through that the Border Patrol was stationed at a certain coordinate to catch a group of migrants in the water. Both me and Laswell thought it was suspicious considering how coincidental a massive group of migrants were caught crossing the river around the same time it was estimated for Hassan to make a move across the border. It was nearly four in the morning, and to say I was tired was an understatement, but I forced myself to keep moving as I was sure adrenaline was going to wake me up sooner or later.
"Rudolfo, los inmigrantes son una distraccíon. El objetivo está en movimiento. (Migrants are a diversion. Target's on the move.)"
"They probably crossed the river in a boat. Let's find out." I suggested.
"Good call," Alejandro nodded, patting my shoulder supportively.
"Si supera, no temenos jurisdicción en los Estados Unidos. (If he gets over, we have no jurisdiction in the United States.)" Rudy sighed to Alejandro.
"Pero lo hago. (But I do.)" I replied assuring, seeing the surprise on Rudy's face when he remembered that I spoke and understood Spanish. Alejandro looked at me with a proud smirk, seeming to admire my dedication to my job. "I've got a few blips on my sensor," I whispered, pointing to the north. "There."
"That's got to be their boat," Alejandro nodded. "Rudy, stop here."
Our weapons were drawn as we crouched against the bank after beaching our boat. I folded down my PVS-14's from my helmet, seeing through the complete darkness with a steady green hue that illuminated against my face. I took point, keeping my suppressed M4 aimed ahead of me, holding up my left hand in a balled fist before I stopped and whispered, "Hey, listen. Cartel's moving Hassan fast."
"We can still catch him before he crosses?" Rudy questioned, taking a position next to me.
"Maybe. We need to move fast."
"The wall is just up ahead," Alejandro informed us. "Be ready."
"Las Almas Cartel working with Iran... this is new ground." I scoffed.
"And if Hassan crosses?"
"Tactics change." I replied, an eager scoff lacing my voice.
"¡Llévalo al escondite! (Get him to the stash house!)" A cartel member shouted.
"Get to cover. There's four detected." I whispered, double-checking to make sure my weapon was ready to fire. It always was, but I always made a habit to double, even triple-check my equipment before opening fire.
"¿Está los barqueros enc amino? (Are the ferrymen on their way?)" Another narco questioned.
"Visual on Hassan. On top of the wall!" I whispered, nudging Alejandro's arm.
"La recogida es en Flores y Barajas. (Pickup is at Flores and Barajas.)"
"I'll take a shot at Hassan to disable him," I directed. "You and Rudy take out the rest on the ground."
"Copy that. Take position, Rudy."
"Ready when you are, Colonel."
My shot rang out, hitting Hassan in the shoulder before he fell to the other side with a heavy thud before I started shooting with Alejandro and Rudy to take out the rest of the cartel members on the ground. They barely had a chance to fire back, but I still treated the area as highly dangerous and expected backup cartel members to arrive.
"Clear!" Rudy shouted.
"By yourself? There could be more waiting on the other side of that wall." Alejandro sighed.
"I shot him in the shoulder, and he fell. It's likely he didn't get up and run away. If he did, I can easily track him."
"When you get to the top, take a look around. If it's only him, then I'll stay here, but if he's gone, I'm going to risk my authority to cross with you."
"Okay." I grinned at him, folding up my PVS-14's and gripping the thin steel pillar of the wall. This was going to be hard to climb, but it wasn't anything I haven't done before. I took my time, failing to look down towards the ground as I had a deep fear of heights, only focusing on my destination before swinging my leg over the top of the wall, flipping down my PVS-14's to sweep the area.
"What're you seeing, Dutton?"
"Not a damn thing!" I replied. "He's gone! I see where he fell, though. Bleeding like a stuck hog, allegedly."
Alejandro and Rudy laughed, each putting on a pair of gloves before ascending the wall at a faster pace, quickly meeting me at the top of the wall, "Aye. He won't get far with that much blood loss."
"That's what I'm saying. You two should follow my lead on this one. Tactics have changed."
"We'll follow your lead, señora. Hassan has more friends here than Rudy and I do. We need to stay sharp." He advised me, he and Rudy moving down along the other side of the wall and to the ground, Alejandro standing below to watch me come down, holding his arms up as Rudy provided cover just in case I fell or needed help.
"The cartel will move him to the stash house nearby," I sighed. "We have to find it. I remember hearing them say something about Flores and Barajas."
"Street names."
"Aye. Let's move."
We moved quietly through the brush, working our way towards a trailer park and through a chain link fence into someone's yard before we stopped in our tracks. Someone was yelling.
"Hey! Get the fuck out of my yard!" An angry American shouted, a beam of flashlight flashing towards the north of the man's property. It didn't take us long to realize that this man was not yelling at us, but someone else.
"¿Quieres una bala, gringo? ¡Vete a la mierda! (You want a bullet, gringo? Back the fuck off!)" A man shouted.
"Hassan's moving this way!" I whispered, pointing. Joining Alejandro's lead, our trio moved as we turned off our flashlights and relied on the street lights that lined the road going through the trailer park. "House on the corner!"
"Copy. Visual!" Rudy nodded. We watched the garage door of the house close harshly, indicating that it wasn't a resident purposely doing so.
It was suspicious.
We moved across the street and took a cover position on either side of the eight-foot-wide garage door. "Open it. I'll cover." Alejandro said to Rudy, his partner nodding as his grip on the door tightened.
"Police are on their way!" A resident shouted from inside the house. "Honey! Get the shotgun!"
"Be advised, these are people's homes. We don't belong here. Make every shot count." Alejandro warned to us as Rudy opened the door, taking point as I watched his six while Alejandro stayed behind to close the garage door back behind him to prevent someone from coming up behind us.
Rudy made entrance into the house, the flashlight mounted on the underside of his barrel guiding him through the dark house, "Special Forces! If you live here, we are not here to hurt you!"
Alejandro cleared the first room to his left while I cleared the first room on my right. "Rudy, let me take point, I have my PVS," I whispered, engaging my night vision and moving forward, preparing to clear the room on my left when a man charged at me from around the corner with a metal baseball bat, hitting me in the hip and knocking me off balance.
"You want some, too?!" He shouted at me, aiming his arm back to hit me again when I took the nearby vase from the table and smashing it over his head, pieces of glass littering the tile floor.
"Do you want some?!" I shouted, taking the bat from his hand and throwing it down. "We're Special Forces. We're not after you!"
"O-Okay!" He groaned, showing me his palms, his chest rising and falling.
"Where did they go? The people that were just in here?"
"They-They went that way!" He groaned, pointing towards the door in the living room of the house that led to the patio, the man's wife sitting on the couch with her knees to her chest.
"Vamos!" Alejandro directed us.
"You alright, señora? You took a big hit." Alejandro asked me, a chuckle coaxing from his throat.
"Didn't even feel it. I'm sure he felt that vase across his head, though." I shrugged.
"Bad move on his part."
"If his wife wasn't screaming and crying for us to not shoot him, I probably would've killed him for charging at me."
"I'm sure—They're right there!" Alejandro said abruptly, pointing towards the house on the street names we had been looking for. We were now in a narrow alley, making our way towards another house to take cover in if the need arose.
A beam of truck headlights blinded my vision before we jumped out of the way, taking cover behind a wooden fence before we opened fire at the truck. "Cartel patrols! Get down!"
"Opening fire on the truck!" I shouted as I unleashed the power of my M4, the truck stopping after I had shot the driver, and three cartel members jumped out of the back of the truck. "All clear." I panted.
"Nice work. Here, this way." Alejandro said, taking the lead towards the next house that we presumed was another one Hassan and his gang used to take cover judging by the forced entry. We could hear the sirens from the local police department heading our way.
"Hassan may be alone." Rudy whispered to me.
"I'd be surprised. Anybody see any blood on the ground anywhere?" I asked. "We could really get a P.I.D on him if we could see his trail."
"Negative. Let's clear this house and move," Alejandro sighed, using his foot to open the busted door and moving in to take cover when he noticed two individuals in the open area of the living room. "Special Forces! Get down!"
"Get the fuck out of my house!" A man shouted, holding up his arms in surrender.
"The men who came through here, where are they?" Rudy commanded, moving to where he stood on Alejandro's left, and I took cover behind the kitchen counter. Something didn't feel right, even if these people seemed to be compliant. Unless this man worked third shift, it was still odd that he was in jeans and a plaid shirt with shoes still on his feet.
It didn't take me long to realize that this man was a member of the cartel gang that was escorting Hassan, and the other man was the homeowner.
"Rudy! Get down!" I shouted, watching the man reach behind his back before he began to open fire on him, killing him on the spot. "You! Show your hands!" I ordered, watching the man cry before he laid down on his stomach and laid his arms out to the side. I could never be too sure that he was just a normal guy, even if he complied with my orders. We had to move fast, so I did a final sweep of the area as Alejandro and Rudy moved to the exterior of the house as I disarmed and took apart the pistol the cartel member once owned and left it on the floor before joining my team outside.
"Let's start with the blue two-story." I whispered.
"Why?"
"Their security light just turned off." I huffed, walking towards the two police cars that blocked the street.
"Drop your fucking weapons right now!" The officer shouted; his weapon drawn at us.
"Do as they say boys. I'll clear this up." I advised.
"Step forward at me! I want to see empty hands! I will shoot you if I have to!"
"I'm Case Officer Kiera Dutton. I'm leading a team of Special Forces after a known terrorist. I was sent by Station Chief Kate Laswell." I bargained.
"Gomez, hold up. These are her people," The officer eased. "Heh, hard to tell you guys apart from the cartel with your uniforms and weapons. Where's your suspect?"
"We tracked him to that house behind you—"
Like a flash, the area had been hit with an RPG. I felt like I had been blown back ten feet, landing on Rudy as he was standing behind me. I couldn't think regularly as my vision was in a haze, feeling like I had just come out of salt water. My ears rang to where any outside sound felt like I was underground. I felt around for my M4, cursing when I realized that it wasn't laying close by. I felt blood staining my uniform at my elbows when I moved to stand to my feet. "Alive?!" Rudy groaned.
"Barely." I hissed, having no time to ask Alejandro if he was okay before enemy gunfire erupted from nearby, seeing two cartel members with covered facing eliminating the surviving police officers before they moved to finish us off.
That was, until Alejandro had taken cover next to the police car before he opened fire, killing the two on the spot. He had picked up my M4. "Echo! Here!" Alejandro shouted at me, tossing my M4 back to me. "Two more incoming! Engage when they get close!"
Rudy and Alejandro took out the two cartel members on the ground while I took cover behind the second police car to take out the RPG shooters on the roof of the garage, watching them fall to the driveway before I did a sweep through my scope to ensure that there was no more enemy movement detected. "Clear."
"Copy. You two sweep down the interior. I'll lock down the exits."
"On it."
Rudy and I made our way into the house, eliminating two threats while we cleared the first floor. A few moments passed by before Alejandro announced that all exits were secure, and he had one more point of entry to check. I moved to the front door as Rudy made his way upstairs. I entered the living room, my finger curling around the trigger of my M4 as I looked at the scared woman who reached for a gun laying on the floor next to the corpse of what looked to be her husband. "Don't you dare reach for that gun!"
"I'm not the cartel!" She cried.
"Then why reach for the gun?"
"I'm not cartel!" She repeated, taking the gun and sliding it towards my foot.
"Go and sit in the corner. Now."
Alejandro and I were able to control the situation, holding our ground while Rudy continued to clear the upstairs. "Is that smoke?" I questioned, smelling a strong scent of burning as Alejandro and I looked at each other. "Oh, my God! It's coming from upstairs!"
"Let's go!" I shouted to Alejandro, making my way behind him as we ascended the stairs.
Heavy smoke filled the entire upper floor of the house, the temperature almost unbearable as we searched frantically for Rudy's location as well as having our weapons drawn just in case there were more surprises waiting on us. "I've got him!" Alejandro shouted at me, and I immediately established a perimeter to keep an eye on the surrounding area until Alejandro could rescue him. We could barely see each other, but that didn't stop him from pushing through to save his brother.
"Let's go! Quick!"
Alejandro laid Rudy down onto the driveway of the house between two cars once we got him outside and I continued to sweep the area of threats while Alejandro tended to him, pulling out gauze from his medi-pack. "What happened in there, Hermano?"
Rudy coughed, "I got shot in the shoulder before I could even take another shot. Hassan came out of the bathroom as they poured gas everywhere. I heard them mumble about a shipment coming across the Atlantic."
"Shit." I huffed.
»»-------¤-------««
Laswell huffed as she closed her laptop, rubbing her face before offering me a cigarette. "Of course, he's going to send Graves."
"He's a cocky prick, isn't he?" I chuckled, lighting the cigarette with the lighter that sat on the table. Laswell was only on Mexican ground for twenty-four hours to make her report before flying back to the Pentagon for further surveillance. That, and I had something that I wanted to touch base with her on. "Don't you find it odd that Shepherd always sends Graves?"
She shrugged, "I guess I could, but it's no different than Captain Price sending his Lieutenant and Sergeant to get a job done."
"True. I'm probably putting too much thought into it..."
"What are your thoughts, Kiera?"
"While I was on the plane heading to Mexico, I was doing research on the missile that was found in Al Mazrah. The one the Marines and Task Force found. I was able to touch base with Sergeant MacTavish as it was in the report that he was able to see the serial number. He told me the number and said that he was glad he was able to remember it, and I put it into our database. That missile was on a shipment roughly nine months ago along with two other missiles. It took me a while to find any records of it, but when I did, guess whose name was on the recon list."
"Who?"
"Commander Phillip Graves. Given the order by General Shepherd himself and those missiles were transferred to the Middle East. That was the only thing I could find because nothing else came up. Given the timeline, it wouldn't surprise me that these missiles got stolen by enemy hands and somehow fell into Hassan's."
Laswell nodded before inhaling her cigarette, "Good work, Kiera. Now I see where you're coming from. You know what you have to do now?"
"Yes, ma'am. Keep a cool head and find little bits of information about these missiles from Graves himself."
"And see if he gives himself up. Don't say anything directly to him to keep him from going anywhere."
"I won't. I'm willing to put money on the fact that Shepherd is sending Graves to cover up a Black Bag operation."
"I'll look into it further when I get back to the Pentagon. You keep here and meet Price's Task Force. Report back to me when you can."
"I always do." I reassured her with a smile.
"I know."

Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. (You can make your own post or reblog this one!) I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? DnD campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!

Midnight Mass: It’s Time to Talk About That Monstrous Twist
https://ift.tt/39I2zkp
This article contains huge spoilers for Midnight Mass. So help me God if you read this without watching the series first…
The version of Midnight Mass that Netflix advertised still would have made for a compelling horror series.
An isolated, insular island community? Great. A young, charismatic preacher suddenly coming to town to shake things up? Perfect. That preacher proving capable of performing minor miracles? Love it, no notes!
Of course, as viewers who have watched at least four episodes of the seven-episode series now know, Midnight Mass has one extra supernatural twist in mind that elevates an already interesting story to true mind-blowing status. Critics were understandably asked to keep this aspect of the show a secret before it premiered. So please indulge me as I finally slay these embargo demons and get it off my chest.
Vampires. Vampires! V-A-M-P-I-R-E-S. VAMPIRES! VAMPIRES VAMPIRES VAMPIRES! Literally like Dracula. And Nosferatu. Anne Rice’s Lestat. Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot. Vampires. VAMPIRES, BRO, VAMPIRES.
For creator Mike Flanagan, a filmmaker influenced by all manner of classic horror, bringing the fanged bloodsuckers to life was a long time coming.
“My favorite vampire movie is (Werner) Herzog’s Nosferatu,” Flanagan told Den of Geek and other outlets prior to the premiere of Midnight Mass. “That film is the vampire story as high art. I also adore From Dusk Till Dawn. I read Dracula young enough for it to really burrow in for me. And I read ‘Salem’s Lot early enough to color an enormous amount of work that I’ll do for the rest of my life.”
Midnight Mass’s depiction of the mythological undead beast and how it can neatly fit into Christian dogma is one of the most satisfying horror twists in years. Now that the truth is out, let’s discuss Midnight Mass and how it conflates vampires and biblical angels.
Mistaking a Vampire for an Angel
The interesting thing about Midnight Mass is that it clearly takes place in a universe where the average person has no knowledge of what a vampire is. Even Sarah Gunning (Annabeth Gish), arguably the most well-read person on Crockett Island, has to do some research into “porphyria cutanea tarda” (a.k.a. the real life “vampire disease”). This is similar to The Walking Dead’s approach to zombies, in which the “z” word and George A. Romero’s name are never spoken. This strategy in Midnight Mass allows for a truly fascinating case of mistaken identity.
While viewers immediately know that the creature Monsignor John Pruitt (Hamish Linklater) encounters is a vampire, he believes it to be an angel. Given how studied Pruitt is in the Bible and Cathloic theology, it’s entirely understandable why he would think a tall, muscular, bald-headed beast with fangs and leathery wings is an angel. As it turns out, the angels of the Old Testament can be truly terrifying.
Not all angels are soft-featured human-like creatures with fluffy white bird wings. Some, like Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones are designed to intimidate God’s enemies. In the New Testament’s Book of Luke, an angel visits Zechariah and immediately asks him to “be not afraid” because the angel can see the poor guy absolutely shaking in his boots upon his arrival. Angels being terrifying is even something of an Internet meme, with users contrasting the phrase “be not afraid” with images of truly monstrous beasts.
Not only does Pruitt’s vampire have the vague appearance of an angel, it also apparently holds the secrets to eternal life as promised in the Bible. By merely drinking some of the “angel’s” blood, a good Christian can live forever just like God says. Does that blood-drinking sacrament sound familiar? It did to Mike Flanagan.
“In Bible school I used to say ‘if the wine turns into Jesus’s blood literally and we’re drinking it so that we can live forever … that seems like a short leap to vampiric myth.’”
Of course, drinking the angel’s fluids in the case of Midnight Mass also leads to some unwanted side effects like a thirst for blood and extreme sensitivity to sunlight. Thankfully, good ol’ Bev Keane always has a Bible quote ready to go for that. When read through the proper perspective, the Holy Bible may as well be the original vampire story.
The Rules of Vampirism
“The thing that I love about the vampire as a cinematic tool is how malleable it is,” Flanagan says. “We all agree that there is no canon. There are no rules. In fact, part of the joy is seeing what rules people cherry pick as they approach a vampire story.”
All depictions of vampires are indeed quite different. Vampires can range from the classic Stoker-ian monster to Twilight’s nigh-invulnerable sparkle bois. Midnight Mass’s version of the vampire leans towards the classic, albeit with some tweaks. In terms of appearance, The Angel (as we will be calling Midnight Mass’s O.G. vampire for simplicity’s sake) has a more bestial look like Nosferatu rather than an aristocratic one like Count Dracula or Anne Rice’s creations.
“We winked at (Nosferatu the Vampyr actor) Klaus Kinski a few times when we designed our guy,” Flanagan says.
Though the Angel resembles Nosferatu in appearance, its vulnerabilities owe more to Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles. Religious iconography does not appear to hurt the Angel nor its thralls. Traditional human weapons like bullets or blades also do no harm (at least not mortally). These vampires are, however, tremendously susceptible to both fire and sunlight. Exposure to the latter for even a few seconds is enough to kill the Angel and his many acolytes.

Like in Rice’s works as well, the path to creating a new vampire is quite simple. Step 1: Drink its blood. Step 2: Die. In Dracula and ‘Salem’s Lot, the method of vampire creation is merely being bit by one, zombie-style. Rice and Flanagan’s approach is quite a bit more intentional and interesting. It also opens the door for perhaps Midnight Mass’s most ingenious storytelling quirk: communion. John Pruitt is able to get nearly the entirety of Crockett Island to become a vampire by spiking the communion wine with his buddy’s blood. Then, all that remains is for them to poison themselves to death, Jonestown-style.
The mass “resurrection” scene in which the congregation awakes as their new vampire selves also provides some insight to just how hard it is to contain the vampire’s overwhelming hunger. Riley Flynn was able to resist it when he turned because John Pruitt babysat him like a psychedelic mushroom guide. The plan for the rest of the congregation was to have their babysitters as well but that didn’t quite work out. Still, Riley’s dad Ed makes it clear to his wife Annie, that even if it’s hard to resist the call for blood, it’s not impossible.
“When I saw them at the church, I thought it was something they really couldn’t help. Like something impossible not to do. But it isn’t, Annie,” he says.
Maybe if more vampires were like Ed Flynn, a whole island full of vampires wouldn’t be too bad of a thing in the first place.

How to Defeat a Vampire
While every vampire story presents its own unique take on the creature, the answer on how to defeat a vampire is usually the same: by doing it together.
“We poor humans only have so much that we can give,” Flanagan says. “We’re ill-equipped as individuals to make any kind of meaningful stand. The only way evil in the world can be brought down is through collective effort. That’s something Stoker understands inherently. It’s clearly something King understands.”
Alongside the aforementioned Bram Stoker and Stephen King, Flanagan presents a small team of humans at story’s end who will do what it takes to defeat evil, even if it means dying in the process. Erin Greene (Kate Siegel), Dr. Sarah Gunning, Sheriff Hassan (Rahul Kohli), Annie Flynn (Kristin Lehman), Warren Flynn (Igby Rigney), and Leeza Scarborough (Annarah Cymone) are the six residents of Crockett Island brave enough to try to take down the Angel. All but two (Warren and Leeza) die. They do succeed in eliminating the immediate threat on Crockett Island but it’s possible the Angel made it away to suck blood another day, damaged wings and all.
What’s interesting about Midnight Mass’s “final crew” is that six appears to be the magic number when it comes to taking down a vampire. Stoker’s Dracula has six heroes: Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker nèe Murray, Arthur Holmwood (Lord Godalming), John Seward, Quincey Morris, and Abraham Van Helsing (of which, only poor American cowboy Quincey Morris dies). King’s ‘Salem’s Lot also has six: Ben Mears, Matt Burke, Susan Norton, Mark Petrie, Jimmy Cody, and Father Callahan (of which, decidedly more than one of them die). This strange bit of arithmancy is something we asked Flanagan about.
“The number was certainly not intentional,” he says. “Once it was clear that Riley was not going to be carrying the torch to the end it really was about asking ‘who are the characters who seem in the very beginning to be at a disadvantage and how do we empower them in the end?’ This was gonna be played out by Sarah Gunning, Sheriff Hassan, and everyone else who would get to just give a little piece.”
Considering that Erin and company were outnumbered about 117 to six, it was a pretty good showing for Crockett Island’s last humans standing.
All seven episodes of Midnight Mass are available to stream on Netflix now.

Names For Scrivener
I wanted more names for my scrivener so I looked up a long ass list of names and formatted it to be uploaded by scrivener for the random name generator.
I will say there are 1,000 boy and girl names in this list but they dont have an ethnicity or name meaning tagged on them. I wanted to just do a quick thing for names to import on scriveners name generator. I figured I might as well share it all. Its under the read more if you want the list ^^ I didnt want to make a giant ass post followers who didnt care would have to deal with.

Whatever your approach, you'll find lots of great options on the following list of the 1,000 most popular boys, according to Social Security Administration (SSA). Y’all I’m so sad that Sophia died, and I’m assuming Hassan had died before her (Cody was never really close with him) so Duncan was adopted by one of his cousins.
R.I.P. to the gen. 2 heir’s spouse, Sophia :’(

For the week of 11 November 2019
Quick Bits:
Batman & The Outsiders #7 throws some further ramifications of Ra’s al Ghul and his minions meddling with Duke and Sofia. Some particularly disturbing transformations going on with Duke that should be interesting. The level of intrigue that Bryan Hill is keeping in the story is gripping.
| Published by DC Comics
The Batman’s Grave #2 is another excellent issue. A little more packed with action than the first one, allowing Bryan Hitch to cut loose with some of the sequences. Also, I’m loving the humour that Warren Ellis is giving us between Alfred and Bruce. That acerbic wit is something we’ve seen from Alfred a lot and Ellis just nails the voice.
| Published by DC Comics
Battlepug #3 is more fun from Mike Norton, Allen Passalaqua, and Crank! Some really nice stuff here as Bryony cuts loose on Nobody’s Ponies. I absolutely love the mix of traditional sword and sorcery storytelling with rather over-the-top humour that basically lampoons it at the same time.

Black Cat Annual #1 is a fun tale of a heist on the Maggia by Black Cat and Spider-Man from Jed MacKay, Joey Vazquez, Natacha Bustos, Juan Gedeon, Brian Reber, and Ferran Delgado. It features the usual humour and action that we see in the series and I quite like how the artists are broken up each following one particular aspect of the story. Though it’s all one narrative, it gives a nice differing feel to each part.

Black Hammer / Justice League: Hammer of Justice #5 concludes what has been an excellent series from Jeff Lemire, Michael Walsh, and Nate Piekos. Ultimately, this has reminded me of the old JLA/JSA crossovers of old, and just feels great as an overall story. Plus the possibility of seeing a sequel.

Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #3 begins “God Loves, Moon Kills”, another two-parter for this series, from Jim Zub, Lan Medina, Craig Yeung, Marcio Menyz, Federico Blee, and Joe Sabino. I love this story format, giving us essentially quick-hit missions dealing with a problem and then moving on. It’s yielded some pretty tight storytelling and some fascinating situations.

Black Stars Above #1 is another incredible debut for Vault, with Lonnie Nadler, Jenna Cha, Brad Simpson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou delivering an incredibly deep and unique horror story. It centres around a young woman in a family of fur traders, as the trade itself begins to die in Canada, and it’s impressive as to how real the characters and their struggle feels. The artwork from Cha and Simpson is exquisite.

Buffy + Angel: Hellmouth #2 continues Buffy and Angel’s descent through hell. It’s much more cerebral than you’d expect, with the demons trying to get into Buffy and Angel’s respective heads in order to manipulate and destroy them. Plus, a rather interesting surprise. Jordie Bellaire, Jeremy Lambert, Eleonora Carlini, Cris Peter, and Ed Dukeshire are doing some great work with the core of this event.

Collapser #5 somehow gets even stranger in this penultimate issue as Liam creates a “perfect” world to run away from the problems he’s having in the real world. The real world bleeding through and a revelation of his girlfriend’s true intentions just ratchet up the strangeness further. Mikey Way, Shaun Simon, Ilias Kyriazis, Cris Peter, and Simon Bowland are just doing amazing work here.

Detective Comics #1015 takes an interesting turn as Nora decides that she likes being a villain. Through this, Peter J. Tomasi is definitely showing an interesting side to Mr. Freeze, emphasizing again that he’s a rather conflicted villain, only doing the various heinous actions to save his wife. Who now doesn’t need him.

Doctor Mirage #4 features more incredibly beautiful, inventive artwork from Nick Robles and Jordie Bellaire. The visual storytelling as Shan faces the Embalmer is just incredible. Magdalene Visaggio, Robles, Bellaire, and Dave Sharpe continue to deliver magic with this penultimate issue.

Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror: Season Two #2 is another entertaining issue. The lead tale from Tom Peyer, Greg Scott, Lee Loughridge, and Rob Steen has traditional EC Comics horror vibes, as a scientist tries to communicate with our worm overlords. In one of the comics back-ups Mark Russell, Peter Snejbjerg, and Steen revisit the world of the breakfast cereal monsters. And there’s the usual prose pieces, poetry, and Hunt Emerson’s Black Cat.

Event Leviathan #6 concludes this series from Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, and Josh Reed. How much you enjoy it will hinge on how much you enjoy Maleev’s art and the realization that most of this tale is about moving one person off the board and the reveal of Leviathan to set up further stories. Also, Bendis paints a Batman who is ridiculously terrible at hiding his secret identity.

Fallen Angels #1 is the final new first issue of this first wave of “Dawn of X” titles and in many ways it’s more personal than the other X-titles, even Excalibur, delving into Psylocke (the former Kwannon, not Betsy Braddock) and her past. Bryan Hill, Szymon Kudranski, Frank D’Armata, and Joe Sabino deliver an interesting story with hooks on the darker side of the X-world, including some ominous bits from Magneto and Sinister, but I question the inclusion of X-23 and Cable. They don’t exactly seem to fit the roles they’ve been put into here.

Family Tree #1 is a phenomenal debut from Jeff Lemire, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Ryan Cody, and Steve Wands. This first issue perfectly captures that insidious nature of family drama mixed with creeping terror and body horror as a bizarre plague begins spreading across America.

Far Sector #1 is one of the most impressive debuts I’ve read in a long time. NK Jemisin, Jamal Campbell, and Deron Bennett create a rich new world in the City Enduring and a compelling character in the new Green Lantern, Sojourner Mullein. The murder mystery that ties everything together is just the icing on the cake. Incredible world-building here and drop dead gorgeous artwork. Do not miss this.

The Flash #82 is part one of “Rogues’ Reign” from Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, and Steve Wands. It features a Central City taken over by the Rogues, transformed into their own personal playgrounds, as the Flash is nowhere to be found. It’s not bad, but the amount you’re going to like it may be relative to how much you’re also enjoying “City of Bane” and the recently concluded similar arc involving the Trickster.

Folklords #1 is off to a fantastic start from Matt Kindt, Matt Smith, Chris O’Halloran, and Jim Campbell. It starts off with a precocious kid in a fantasy world who’s been having visions of what essentially amounts to our world, whose quest sets out a rather draconian lockdown on their society when the Librarians rein in everyone from illicit action, like finding the Folklords. Highly recommended.

Forgotten Home #2 reveals more about Jannada, its history and society, and how an unjust queen was brought to rule through racial warfare. Love the artwork from Marika Cresta and Matt Emmons.

Gideon Falls #18 unleashes the Laughing Man on reality in part two of “The Pentoculus”. Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Dave Stewart, and Steve Wands are beautifully unfolding this twisted and horrific flower of a story.

Gotham City Monsters #3 adds another element of DC lore to the series as Melmoth claims a particular prize. I really quite like how Steve Orlando, Amancay Nahuelpan, Trish Mulvihill, and Tom Napolitano are pulling together disparate bits of Gotham and beyond to craft this story.
| Published by DC Comics
Guardians of the Galaxy #11 is the penultimate issue of this series from Donny Cate, Cory Smith, Victor Olazaba, David Curiel, and Cory Petit. It’s basically a big fight between the remaining Guardians and everyone else. It doesn’t go so well.

Hawkman #18 takes a somewhat different approach to Hawkman’s infection than what we’ve seen of the others so far. Rather than being a dark reflection of Hawkman’s own desires, he’s taken over by an Earth-3 incarnation in Sky Tyrant. Robert Venditti, Pat Olliffe, Tom Palmer, Jeremiah Skipper, and Richard Starkings & Comicraft instead use that to play the spirit of our Hawkman against.

Hit-Girl: Season Two #10 is part two of “India”. The artwork from Alison Sampson and Tríona Farrell is impressive, given an amazing level of detail to bringing Mumbai to life. Brutal and rich in colour.

House of Whispers #15 takes a new twist as the Corinthian finds the House of Watchers, takes over, and everything changes. Nalo Hopkinson, Dan Watters, Dominike “Dono” Stanton, Zac Atkinson, and AndWorld Design kick off some new terrors as even Erzulie’s status quo is upended, and we get another guest appearance of John Constantine’s homecoming.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label / The Sandman Universe
Invaders #11 pushes deeper into Steve and Namor’s history and relationship, as Steve refuses to give up on his old friend. There’s some very heavy, very good character work here as we head into the final issue. Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue to astonish at the incredibly high bar they’ve set for this story.
| Published by Marvel
Justice League Odyssey #15 is a fun tale from Dan Abnett, Will Conrad, Rain Beredo, Pete Pantazis, and AndWorld Design. Jessica Cruz leading a rag tag band of villains (and Orion) against Darkseid and the previous JLO turned evil is unfolding as a very entertaining story with some interesting twists. Also, Dex-Starr is awesome.
| Published by DC Comics
Morbius #1 isn’t a bad start from Vita Ayala, Marcelo Ferreira, Roberto Poggi, Dono Sánchez-Almara, and Clayton Cowles. This first issue is largely just action as Morbius sets out on his quest to cure himself, again, but it’s not bad. The art from Ferreira, Poggi, and Sánchez-Almara is very nice.

Oblivion Song #21 continues the slowburn investigation and reconnaissance of the Faceless Men’s base, as Marco tries to map it out and discover where they’re holding all of the people who decided to stay in Oblivion. Gorgeous artwork from Lorenzo De Felici and Annalisa Leoni as we see more of the Faceless Men’s technology.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Psi-Lords #6 does a bit more world-building as we find out more about the Psi-Lords and the Starwatchers, even as the four Earthers are beset by the other Marked in a bizarre farce of a trial. Fred Van Lente, Renato Guedes, and Dave Sharpe are telling a pretty great sci-fi adventure tale here. It largely stands alone in the greater Valiant universe framework and deserves more attention than its getting.
| Published by Valiant
Punisher: Soviet #1 is another welcome return to the Punisher by Garth Ennis, stepping back into Frank’s adventures like he never left. Ennis, Jacen Burrows, Guillermo Ortego, Nolan Woodard, and Rob Steen deliver a brutal and bloody beginning as Frank chases down someone who everyone seems to think is him.
| Published by Marvel / MAX
Reaver #5 is a fairly impressive spotlight for Breaker as he does what he really didn’t want to do again in order to help his “friends”. Justin Jordan, Rebekah Isaacs, Alex Guimarães, and Clayton Cowles present a number of twists and surprises in one of the most brutal issues yet.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Ronin Island #8 sees the remaining islanders largely stand together as they try to both stand up to and flee from the Shogun’s soldiers and madness. With a terrible occurrence that looks like it’s going to cause even more problems for the survivors. Giannis Milonogiannis and Irma Kniivila’s art continues to be everything.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Sea of Stars #5 very nicely puts the pieces together as a disconsolate Gil has been captured and basically given up thinking Kadyn dead is brought to the world where his son is about to be gutted. Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum, Stephen Green, Rico Renzi, and Jared K. Fletcher are telling an incredible story here and this issue throws even more twists at the reader.

Seven Days #2 unfolds some of the fallout of people learning that they only have seven days left, as the superhero community is enlisted to try to stop whatever the shiny harbinger things are. Gail Simone, José Luís, Jonas Trinidade, Michelle Madsen, and Saida Temofonte are continuing to build an intriguing story here as we get more and more of the breadth of the Catalyst Prime universe.

Superman #17 is kind of a housekeeping issue from Brian Michael Bendis, Kevin Maguire, Paul Mounts, and Dave Sharpe, acting as a prologue to “The Truth”. A bit of reflection on the Unity Saga, Event Leviathan, and Year of the Villain.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night #1 might well be the best of these one-shots yet. Tim Seeley, Kyle Hotz, Dexter Vines, Walden Wong, Danny Miki, David Baron, Allen Passalaqua, and Tom Napolitano give us a bleak look at a world where Sinestro chose not to share the power of the White Lantern light and essentially everything fell to Nekron and the Black Lanterns. It’s a very unique take on the zombie apocalypse on its own, made more interesting as a fallen Sinestro, Lobo, and Dove try to save this universe. The art from Hotz, Vines, Wong, Miki, Baron, and Passalaqua is perfect.

Trees: Three Fates #3 continues to build up the weird atmosphere from last issue, then turns around and focuses on more of the gritty aspects of Oleg, Mik, and Nina. Gorgeous artwork all throughout from Jason Howard and Dee Cunniffe.

Triage #3 shifts to Commander Marco’s reality as the group flee from the Hunter. I really like what Phillip Sevy and Frank Cvetkovic have been doing with this story. Great high concept, but the interpersonal relationships are where it’s really at.
| Published by Dark Horse
Usagi Yojimbo #6 is a beautiful updating and embellishment of the very first story of Usagi from Albedo by Stan Sakai and Tom Luth. This single issue story really captures the spirit and magic of all of Sakai’s stories, wonderfully portraying his mix of action and folklore.

Vampirella/Red Sonja #3 explores more of what the Russians were doing in regards to Drakulon and more. More very nice humour from Jordie Bellaire in the interactions between Vampirella and Sonja.

Wonder Woman #82 begins “The Wild Hunt” from the new creative team of Steve Orlando, Kieran McKeown, Scott Hanna, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau. It very much continues on from the plot threads and elements of the previous run, continuing to build on the current conflict between Wonder Woman and Cheetah.

X-Men #2 is pretty damn great, going back to the big and wild ideas bringing new elements into the X-universe, all while Cyclops gives some of the strangest parenting. Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu, Garry Alanguilan, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles give us a new mystery with the arrival of Arakko and the first of -|A|-’s missing original horsemen.
