Ladies, if your game is on the 3DS, developed by Intelligent Systems, lets you use Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina if you have their amiibo, and is unfairly hated on and dismissed out of hand by people who let internet hiveminds decide what their opinion is, that's not your game that's Code Name S.T.E.A.M.

Alright hear me out.
1: Code Name S.T.E.A.M is a Nintendo game for the 3DS based around U.S public domain characters that used the stylus for aiming.
2: The Switch 2 reportedly has a mode where the controllers can work like a mouse, meaning it can replicate stylus style aiming.
3. The public domain has expanded since the original release of Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
4. Mickey Mouse's debut was in Steamboat Willy.
5: Video game versions of public domain characters have appeared in Smash, such as Castlevania's version of Dracula.
There is a specific set of actions Nintendo could take now where bringing back Code Name STEAM lets them put their own version of Mickey Mouse in Smash.

GOTG Review: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
This is the next game in my Backlog Roulette series, where each month I spin a wheel to randomly select a game on my massive backlog that I must play (though not necessarily to completion). These wheel spins occur on the monthly preview episodes I co-host with my friends on The Casual Hour podcast.
If you know me at all, you know I love Intelligent Systems. Theyâre a developer who has made some of my favorite games and franchises of all time â Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Pushmo, WarioWare, Paper Mario, the Super Nintendo port of SimCity, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. With this many bangers, you start to think they just canât miss. But they can miss. And sometimes, they miss hard.Â
Shadow president Lincoln is one of the few high points.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is one of those hard misses. On paper, the pitch is compelling: a 3DS turn-based strategy game where you take a steampunky, alt-history crew of folklorish and literature legends led by Abraham Lincoln, and fight off an incoming alien invasion. I mean, that sounds so bombastically dumb and fun. And then you start playing it.Â
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is not fun to play. Itâs closest analog would be something like Valkyria Chronicles (a series I havenât loved, despite really wanting to), where you navigate levels and make attacks from a third-person, behind-the-back view. It works in Valkyria Chronicles, games you play on a TV or on the luxurious screen of a PlayStation Vita. On the 3DS (even an XL), the cramped conditions make for a frustrating time.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e73198684b6993dd74b351804bfb6148/7f5f88c1a6688495-47/s540x810/66c48e7e48f14197e636f59b52e4a6c2bba3a22c.jpg)
Valkyria Chronicles' behind the back works just fine when you got the screen real estate to handle it.
Valkyria Chronicles also has the benefit of an overhead map you can pull up any time (yâknow, in case you want to do some strategy in your strategy video game). Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. does not, forcing you to memorize a quick fly-through of a level before dumping you in. The gameâs director, Paul Patrashcu, says this was to âremove abstractionâ and make the game more like a shooter, thinking this would be approachable to players new to strategy games. I donât know what mapless shooters Paulâs talking about here. Maps are all over shooters, Paul. Put a map in your fucking video game.
But Code Name does bring over one of Valkyriaâs worst mechanics fully intact: Enemy overwatch. You see, even though both games are technically turn-based, you are able to move around your characters in pseudo realtime on your turn. Enemies canât move on your turn, but if you walk into their sight lines, they can and absolutely will shoot at you. And unlike a game like XCOM where overwatch is proccâd once and then itâs over, in Code Name, theyâll just keep doing it until you walk out of their sight, kill them or end your turn. On one hand, it is fair (a number of your fighters have overwatch capabilities too), but it does expose another problem players of Code Name will have to deal with: Weapon rangesâŚor the lack thereof.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/816a805638dd9954afa50c55b7c031df/7f5f88c1a6688495-68/s540x810/89af3717f13eed53c7f034c66ba4ea78ca99f763.jpg)
Seen here: Tom Sawyer about to get overwatched to fucking death.
You see, enemies inherently know their own ranges, so theyâll shoot as soon as you walk within it. But your weapons donât really have an explicitly-stated range. Instead, as you inch closer to foes, youâll eventually see their names and health bars pop up. Thatâs generally when you can start hitting your shots, but you can definitely still miss, especially for guns that shoot multiple shots per attack. There are no indicators for how and when this will happen, just a hidden dice roll that will sometimes bend you over at random. Some weapons, like artillery explosives or pounce attacks do give you a trajectory indicator, but those weapons canât use overwatch, so theyâre more situational in use and canât be relied upon entirely.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/27c03aea2a8b5777b7297e2a4415240d/7f5f88c1a6688495-db/s400x600/28630e451828ce77a0f863220869e8f6f06c47b8.jpg)
Weapon ranges are too abstract, except the ones for artillery apparently.
But whatâs it really matter anyway when you donât know how effective your shots will be even if they do connect? Sure, you can see an enemyâs health bar, and you can also see how much of a chunk youâll take out of it will a full hit, but youâre only given a hard number for your damage when you hit, and youâre never given any numbers about the enemiesâ health. OK, my Eagle Rifle can do 25 damage per bullet, and yeah, if I squint my eyes at the tiny health bar on the tiny screen, that looks like it might be taking off about 30% of their HP, but weâre dealing with some very fuzzy math here, which leads to more shrugging and guessing than calculating and risking. Itâs a system built on almost entirely on feel, which isnât ideal when your game feels awful. Is basic subtraction also too abstract, Paul?
There are lots of other annoyances as well. Enemy turns take forever (even after the dev patched in a speed up switch after launch), and because you have no tactical map of any kind, you mostly spend enemy turns looking at walls or empty hallways as the game moves patrols around for 10-20 seconds every time. The presentation is grating, with the same voice clip yelling âPLAYER TURNâ and âENEMY TURNâ at the beginning of Every. Single. Turn. The character design is fine, I guess. The Silver Age comic lookâs big, black outlines do help to make the models pop on the small screen. But also, the first two characters they give you are Henry Fleming (based on the character in The Red Badge of Courage), and the folk hero John Henry. Why they give you two guys both named Henry right off the bat, I have no idea, but it is stupid and confusing when someone yells âHenry,â and I donât know who theyâre talking about, which they do a lot in the beginning of the game.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d7a3d64258710e93ce732ea4f01028dc/7f5f88c1a6688495-ae/s540x810/e7177595c954c8fed01d0779aa0f89b20d1a8235.jpg)
Ah yes, swords: The perfect weapon in a shooting game.
Because this game is on the 3DS and is made by Intelligent Systems, it does have some amiibo support. You can scan in four different Fire Emblem amiibo (the four that were out at the time of the gameâs development: Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina) to get their corresponding playable characters in Code Name. For a bunch of sword fighters, they do surprisingly well in fights, but they do have a very odd drawback. If any of the Fire Emblem characters die in a mission, they leave your team completely and canât come on another mission unless you scan that amiibo again. I canât decide if thatâs a permadeath reference for a core mechanic in Fire Emblem games or if thatâs a way to encourage you buy the amiibo rather than just borrowing them from a friend one time to unlock the goodies, but either way, I can tell you itâs very annoying to have to carry around four amiibo on the off chance one of them bites it while youâre out and about.Â
I think itâs admirable to try and make a strategy game that is accessible and approachable for people unfamiliar with the genre. But this isnât it. Mario + Rabbids is that. Marvel Snap is that. Fire Emblem: Awakening and Advance Wars are that. SteamWorld Heist is that (it even has âsteamâ in the title, making Code Name: S.T.E.A.M somehow even more irrelevant.)
Play SteamWorld Heist instead. It's so much better!
Look, if you couldnât tell by now, I think this game is pretty awful in almost every aspect. Itâs very funny that Ulysses S. Grant can interact with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, and Tom Sawyer can ask questions about the Necronomicon, but the game all this silly bullshit is attached to is a boring, unintuitive and vague mess. I am baffled how a developer as good at making strategy games as Intelligent Systems is could make something so bad. And I hope I never have to think about it again.Â

I don't think people realize how absolutely wild Linux is.
Here we have an Operating system that now has 100 different varieties, all of them with their own little features and markets that are also so customizable that you can literally choose what desktop environment you want. Alongside that it is the OS of choice for Supercomputers, most Web servers, and even tiny little toy computers that hackers and gadget makers use. It is the Operating System running on most of the world's smartphones. That's right. Android is a version of Linux.
It can run on literally anything up to and including a potato, and as of now desktop Linux Distros like Ubuntu and Mint are so easily to use and user friendly that technological novices can use them. This Operating system has had App stores since the 90s.
Oh, and what's more, this operating system was fuckin' built by volunteers and users alongside businesses and universities because they needed an all purpose operating system so they built one themselves and released it for free. If you know how to, you can add to this.
Oh, and it's founder wasn't some corporate hotshot. It's an introverted Swedish-speaking Finn who, while he was a student, started making his own Operating system after playing around with someone else's OS. He was going to call it Freax but the guy he got server space from named the folder of his project "Linux" (Linus Unix) and the name stuck. He operates this project from his Home office which is painted in a colour used in asylums. Man's so fucking introverted he developed the world's biggest code repo, Git, so he didn't have to deal with drama and email.
Steam adopted it meaning a LOT of games now natively run in Linux and what cannot be run natively can be adapted to run. It's now the OS used on their consoles (Steam Deck) and to this, a lot of people have found games run better on Linux than on Windows. More computers run Steam on Linux than MacOS.
On top of that the Arctic World Archive (basically the Svalbard Seed bank, but for Data) have this OS saved in their databanks so if the world ends the survivors are going to be using it.
On top of this? It's Free! No "Freemium" bullshit, no "pay to unlock" shit, no licenses, no tracking or data harvesting. If you have an old laptop that still works and a 16GB USB drive, you can go get it and install it and have a functioning computer because it uses less fucking resources than Windows. Got a shit PC? Linux Mint XFCE or Xubuntu is lightweight af. This shit is stopping eWaste.
What's more, it doesn't even scrimp on style. KDE, XFCE, Gnome, Cinnamon, all look pretty and are functional and there's even a load of people who try make their installs look pretty AF as a hobby called "ricing" with a subreddit (/r/unixporn) dedicated to it.
Linux is fucking wild.

彥 WEEPING, CARVED OPEN HEARTS
â. contains: bf!toji fushiguro x gn!reader; mild angst with comfort (they had an argument oh no), toji learns how to apologize, toji is in love wc: 2.3k
your throat is sore and your eyes burn. you're tired and sad and upset and you just want it to be over already. but his sharp words swim laps in your head and you can't think about anything else. the ceiling of your shared living room is the only form of solace at this point, the shadows of the street putting on a show just for you.
the warm light of the lamps that stand tall behind the apartment window use the ceiling as a canvas, the passing cars as little characters running around. you hear hollering â it's saturday night, people are having fun. and you're curled up on the sad couch with a sniveling nose.
you hear steps and the bathroom door clicking shut and you use the moment to grab your stuff; a pillow, a blanket and a change of clothes â the very same sad couch will be your best friend tonight.
he turns on the water and you stand behind the door, longingly staring at the wood, wishing the night had gone differently.
but it didn't. so, you put on your pyjamas and sink into the couch. letting a few last tears fall from your eyes, you try to get some rest.
try.
while you're cocooning yourself away from the world, toji is staring at his own reflection in the foggy mirror. hands splayed on the cold countertop, his head hangs low and the running water turns into a muffled sound in his ears; dark strands of hair fall in front of his exhausted eyes, and he too, can't stop thinking about his own words.
regret fills his veins, threatening to explode under his skin. he can't tear his eyes from the disappearing reflection, the steam covering up more and more of the glass, hiding his guilty stare. his heart beats in morse code, calling out your name with every breath he takes but he's still stuck in this tiny shrinking room while you're out there â in the dark, in the cold, drowning in the impact of his words. he didn't mean them, he didn't. toji squeezes his eyes shut and his head drops to his chest. he thinks about your trembling hands and your shaky voice.
a sigh.
a miserable one.
he drops his towel and stands under the hot water. the warmth takes him in but it's nothing compared to you. the droplets comb through his hair but it's nothing compared to you. they cascade down his scarred shoulders and the muscles of his back, but it's nothing.
compared to you.
the smell of the shampoo makes him want to vomit. your shampoo. his shampoo. he rubs at his scalp and lets the suds drip over his face. he scrubs his body and he wishes he could do it harder. he hopes that you're sleeping well. no, he doesn't. he wants to say goodnight to you.
he tilts his head up towards the shower head and closes his eyes, letting the water run over his neck and his adam's apple, washing away all of the remaining ugly words that might've still been lurking in his throat.
he turns the water off and steps out. only throwing on his sweatpants, he doesn't even bother drying himself off, he just needs... you. he needs to hold you, he needs to hear you. he needs to feel his heartbeat.
one step out of the bathroom and toji can already see the corner of your blanket hanging from the edge of the couch. he fists the material of his pants at his side as he breathes out. it hurts. slowly, he approaches your bundled up body, trying to figure out whether you're already asleep or not. your face is hidden in the pillow, your back facing him and he just wants to see you.
"leave me alone."
it hurts.
his head falls back, his eyes raking over the faint shadows on the ceiling. a car honks on the street below, the wind blows behind your cracked open window. his chest feels heavy, his shoulders hurt.
"why aren't you in bed?"
quiet. you think about not answering. you thought about not talking to him throughout the entire night, but now that he's here... it's harder than you thought.
"because you're mean. and you hurt my feelings." your fingers dig into the pillow under your head. "and i don't want to fucking see you."
his knee cracks when he squats down beside you. his fingers itch to play with the ends of your hair, to pull you into his body and never let you leave.
"well, thank god you can't see anything when yer sleeping then, hm."
he's infuriating. he sounds tired. you want to slap him, you want to push him away. you hate that you can hear strain in his voice. you want him to say that he's sorry. you want to hold him. you want him to show that he cares.
leaving the safe confines of the warm blanket, you whip your head towards him. the light coming from the outside is barely enough to show you his eyes. they're soft, softer than you've ever seen them before. a dark forest; the green circular windows are pleading for you. please, don't be scared of what's inside.
"no arguments for the first two statements?"
you're a inches away from bumping your nose against his, your warm breath hitting his skin as you scoff. the pain is still there, slowly but surely turning into anger but he understands.
"i'mâ trying, yeah?"
your eyes flick between his, searching for... something.
"why is your own pride more important than my feelings, toji?"
...
he fucking hates the way you're looking at him. loathes.
you look exhausted too, eyes swollen from all of the crying from before and now there are fresh tears forming in the corners of them.
because of him.
why is his pride more important? it isn't. it isn't, it isn't, it isn't. and yet... silence. something scratches in his throat â it wants to get out but it's hard. a drop rolls over the apple of your cheek and his head falls against your shoulder with a sigh. you don't push him away, you don't invite him in either. why is it so hard for him?
"i just feel like you don't care at all sometimes. when you refuse to apologize â it seems like we're competing against each other but i don't even know what the game is."
your voice is shaky and you're doing your best to come off as composed as you can because you want him to hear you out. you're scared he's going to brush you off. again.
he fiddles with the edge of your blanket, his weight heavy on your body.
"apologizing doesn't make you weak, you know. you're not losing anything â toji, we're not competing over anything. it would simply show that..." you take a big breath in, and let a big one out. "it would show that you do care. that you listen to me, that you want me here."
somebody laughs in the distance. toji smells so good. you close your eyes and focus on what you're about to say.
"it's okay for it to be hard, i don't expect you to spill it right away but it is important to me. i need to know that you're not just dusting away my feelings just because you find them difficult to deal with."
pulling your one hand from under the covers, you let it dig into his wet dark locks. your shampoo, his shampoo.
"but if they are too difficult to deal with..." you trail off, your own thought making more tears fall from the corners of your eyes. he buries his forehead into your body as you play with the hair on the nape of his neck and you feel his fingers digging into your blanket.
"don't say that... fuckâ please, don't say that."
"i can't do it like this, toji. i'm not gonna apologize for being emotional. i'm not gonna apologize for being myself, for being alive." you hiccup. "i'm not gonna apologize for not being a brick fucking wall."
"i know, sweetheart, i know."
"do you?"
his teeth sink into his bottom lip and he thinks about your smile. about how your eyes shine in the warm sunlight. how you cling to him even when in your sleep. how you keep ruffling his hair even though he pretends to hate it. how cute you look when you steal his massive sweatshirts. how comforting your voice sounds, how well your hand fits into his. how intently you always listen to him, how you wash his back after a long day at work. how stupid your jokes are. and how much he loâ
...
how much he loves you.
your fingers comb through his hair and you're still coddling him despite the fact that you're upset. and sad, and angry. he thinks about how he doesn't deserve you. how you'd be better off with someone else.
he feels you falter, just a bit, and he knows he's wasting time. you're tired and you want to sleep and you want to feel his love. you want to hear it. and nothing gets to be more important than you. he makes that promise in his head, in his heart.
his sun, his moon, his stars. the smell of coffee in the morning and the feeling of your arms around his waist. his everything.
"i'm..."
fuck.
you turn your body, now fully laying on your back, and pull his head against your chest. he listens to your heartbeat and his hands snake around your middle.
"i love you."
he knows for a fact that you're too good for him.
he hasn't even said it yet but you're determined to let him know how you feel. he knows it's not meant as an encouragement either â you're completely bare before him; honest and straightforward, meagerly waiting for him to do the same. hoping he'll do the same. he's not stupid, he knows your patience is running low but you're still trying. still giving him the chance to do right by you because you want him to do right by you.
he gives you a squeeze, nuzzling his face into chest as if he could somehow reach your ribcage that way. he knows his rough hands have to work overtime to hold your big delicate heart and he's scared.
but your heart is probably scared too, isn't it? wouldn't it be scary to be held by these calloused hands; hands that only know pain and hurt?
this is how it goes. you're both scared and you'll both hold each other. whispering praise into the other's ears, regardless of the fear of getting hurt. trust â it's about trust.
i love you. you make me feel safe. stay with me. let me get that for you. let's shower together. i made you coffee. i want you to come with me. hold my hand. kiss me. hug me. hold me. i want you.
i trust you.
"i'm sorry."
...
muffled, and spoken into your skin â it's enough. it's more than enough for you.
soft, warm hands cradle his jaw and raise his head from your chest. soft, warm eyes hold his gaze and he knows his on the right path.
"fuckâ" a shaky laugh; his own emotions are swallowing him whole and you're the only thing holding him up. he watches your lips curl up and relief takes over. he melts into your touch and you guide him to your lips.
you hold him there for a moment â noses touching, breaths mingling together. "thank you."
a bear hug, a high-five, a burst of laughter. an ocean wave â intense, and a lot. freeing. the feeling washes over him and he lets himself sink into you. lips against lips, chests against chests, hearts against hearts; without parting from you, toji climbs onto the couch, resting his entire body on top of yours. you don't complain.
he breathes you in and you do the same. he leans to the right and you do the same. he keeps you close and you do the same. his hand kneads the soft flesh of your waist and your hand rakes through his still wet hair. it feels right. it is right.
toji scrambles to push the blanket from between your bodies, desperate to rid of the barrier that's keeping him from his beloved. his rough hands push your shirt up just enough to feel your skin against his. he sighs into your mouth and he feels you smile against him.
your hands clasp behind his neck, pulling him flush to you and you hook your leg over his hip. latched together, forged together.
"i love you." a murmur, accompanied by a kiss to the corner of your lips. he places another onto the curve of your jaw before hiding his face in the crook of your neck.
you turn your head and press your lips to his forehead. "i love you, too."
he's warm and his arms feel so good around you. he's heavy, borderline crushing you under him but you wouldn't have it any other way. you're also a breath away from falling off the couch but you know he wouldn't let you do that. not today at least.
right now, toji is determined to keep you safely in his arms until one of you is dying of hunger and thirst. absolutely nothing else will make him move â he just might let you piss your pants if it comes to that.
for the sake of love, of course.

Crush (ing)
Summary: Where Ghost goes a little too rough on you in training then makes up for it.
5k+ ish words â Ghost (Simon Riley) x Y/N
A/N: Angst with a smutty happy ending. Times are weird now, so I'm back to writing again. You know the drill, no proofread found here
-----
Part 1
It was merely a crush, you realized. It must be. Otherwise, you would have to not have sex again with Simon.
Because there was no way in hell a man like that would let himself be roped in into a relationship, and a relationship with you at that. You were sure he hated you, going by his nonchalant treatment when he wasnât in your bed.Â
There, another example. You havenât even been to his room, which going by his arrogant attitude must be annoyingly spotless.
You hated him, or at least you wished that saying it would make it better for your sanity. Because this was Simon.
The first time you slept together happened in France, and it was not gentle. Well, you didnât really expect any special treatment as a lover, but it wasnât exactly a tender moment, more of a âblowing some steamâ sort of thing. A âhigh-school make out sessionâ sort of a thing, or so you repeated in your head whenever his name came up in conversation. Â
Itâs not to say that it wasnât enjoyable, but only a representation of the tone of your weird situationship. And you were fully sure that this was Johnnyâs fault somehow.
âBut he likes you, lass. Thatâs why heâs a pain.â He said, as if there was no doubt about it.
You scoffed at that. Unfortunately, he wasnât the only one who thought so.
Your aching shoulder, after sparring got out hand, made you believe otherwise.
Now, Johnny said something about hanging out for drinks with some locals. The mission in Serbia took a pause on the wait for new intel, so as consequence your unit had a free week out of uniform. This meant more time with your team outside of work, and that meant that you and Ghost were at each otherâs throats. Mostly you since his sunken eyes behind the sockets of his skullmask barely moved when you made jabs at him.
Then he stared and stared, a blank look threatening you into a near sycosis. Why couldnât he just be normal and answer without underestimating you?
And one night there was a local event, promising alcohol and a good time. It was dark already, but the people there were lively, enjoying food and from far away, you could hear music and dancing. You couldnât wait to try and merge with the crowd, maybe flirt a little with a cute local. And you thought you looked lovely, really good going by the way some of the soldiers ogled you. It must be due to you being one of the only females in the base, but it wasnât harming your ego.
Johnny whistled when you met at the entrance, drawing attention to you in civilian clothes. You think they hadnât seen you off your gear yet, and it must be shocking to see you in a normal long maxi skirt mapping the curves of your hips, a dark top and a fashionable coat, just as dark of course. You looked like a killer with your dark makeup and hair down for the first time in a while, sparkling earrings catching in moonlight.
âLittle lady, are ya lost?â He whistled again, making you hurry your pace to shut him up. There was a diminutive pause with hesitation at seeing Ghost in the driver seat after Johnny moved away from the window.
He looked at you, eyes trailing leisurely from your toes to your eyes. You wiggled your white-painted toes in your wedges at the pinning stare. It was a pain smuggling nail polish in missions, but his ongoing stare made it worth it. They might not be up to code, but you didnât really care. He blinked slowly as his fingers lightly rapped against the steering wheel in what you thought to be annoyance.
âAre ya coming?â The brute asked, still bitter by your word ping-pong match in Priceâs office. You certainly had won because you believed yourself capable of acting as a secret spy inside a mob dead set on selling plutonium as a business. Yeah, they were a little out of their heads, but really talented at hiding, so here you were, stuck in Serbia. Ghost clearly thought you werenât good enough of a liar to gather intelligence, or so he implied, but you knew it was because he didnât believe you werenât good enough overall.
Your past scuffles where Ghost was the opponent, pinning you down on the mat, were proof enough. This was the military, you werenât allowed to make it personal, but when he bested you and made sure to show you your faults with overtraining you⌠His strict treatment with you hadnât gone unnoticed by others and, well, letâs say that you werenât feeling rational about it.Â
To your annoyance he got out of the car, and for a second you expected him to fight you again, maybe prevent you from getting into the backseat with brute force. Would he say that you werenât allowed to drink or have fun? Would your mistakes make him order you back to the gym instead of a night of fun?
None of the scenarios circulating in your head happened. Instead, he leaned sideways and opened the door. You stood still as he waited at your gaping. Then, obviating your embarrassment, you closed your mouth and got in at the rise of an eyebrow behind his mask. None of you mentioned anything at his action, one that you found odd. Maybe he did it as a power move? Or maybe he did it only for the shock factor to keep you on your toes?
Sitting at the back, immersing yourself in your distrust, you kept making eye contact with Ghost through the rearview mirror. Not on purpose, but he did nothing to turn his eyes away, only to drive, and sometimes you swore he couldnât keep his eyes off you.
But you kept fighting with facts versus what you wanted. Did you want him to seek you, look at you and only you? Your last argument kept circulating in your thoughts. Whenever he looked at you, pain followed.
So, he steered the rented car in silence, Johnny making conversation with himself. Ghost found parking nearby inside the city, near the pubs, and yet the car was left hidden in another block. Yeah right⌠it was the car that would draw attention, not the hulk-of-a-man wearing a balaclava in public.
And it was sort of inevitable the way your gaze would keep drawing back to the blonde near-white lashes free of dark paint or the sharpness of his jawline as he rumbled out another one of his jokes to Johnny. The lack of skull mask allowed you to obsess, no, notice the details. Yes, notice.
And he still had a balaclava. You felt like you were going insane in your ruminating and in your shame for sleeping with someone that didnât find you worthy enough to show their face.
The guys flocked around you as you headed into the first club with music you could understand.
After a while, you realized you shouldnât have dared to defy a Scotsman in a drinking game. Johnny was fully sober and you were giggly at your third drink. You were drawn to the dance floor and the bar behind it, or at least a moment for yourself. Â A fourth drink didnât sound so bad, you mused as you planned how to get out of the booth. You were fidgeting in the middle, Johnny on one side, Ghost on the other. Gaz was supposedly on his way, something about needing more time to get dressed. As if. He probably knew this night would be boring and would never arrive.
âExcuse me, scootâ you said, nodding at Johnny to move so you could get out. He huffed and practically ignored you with a teasing grin as he kept âscoping the perimeterâ or whatever that meant. âJohnny, let me out. I have to pee.â
âSo? If you leave, whoâll be my wingwoman?âÂ
âCertainly not me. Ghost?â
âNot moving.â
You looked at the two, noticing that Johnny was leaning forward on the table, and Ghost wasnât. Hoping that the shock factor would stave away the complaints, you swung your leg over Ghostâs hips, landing on your knee at his side. The skirt rode up to your knees as you stared him down, stumbling at your sloshed state. You expected to climb away quickly, but before you could escape into the booming music, solid hands tightened themselves over your hips. You swayed as you lost your momentum, hitting your lower back on the edge of the table, empty glasses clinking.
You hissed at the pain, the bruises on your back tender from yesterdayâs training stung as your hands grasped his shoulders for stability. One of his palms quickly spread on your lower back, preventing more accidents. Your lips clamped at the pain. His head was almost at your height, despite you being over him, a few inches up on your knees, spread over his thighs.
Dark eyes stared at you through his mask, but you could clearly make out a risen eyebrow in amusement. That little shit always found a way to get a rise out of you.
âEasy, doll. You shouldâve just asked,â he rumbled lowly, barely heard through the music.
âWoah,â Soap added to your embarrassment.
âNone of you would move, now let me off,â you didnât wait for his permission and swung your other leg away, paving your way to freedom away from those steady hands. There was no way you could feel his warmth through all your layers beneath the skirt, but the shape of his fingertips still ghosted over your hips. Fighting the urge to look back, you walked away with flaming cheeks, and hurriedly headed directly to the bar. Well, more like swayed to the bar as embarrassment sunk in slowly in your drunken state.
It was almost as if he was completely unbothered by your presence whilst the mere thought of that skull mask made your logic haywire, aggression being an immediate outlet. You certainly needed that drink, or anything as a distraction, but the bar was unreachable. The hoard of people flaying their limbs to the deep base reverberating through your form didnât allow you a direct way, so you tried to push yourself through the sides of the crowd. Even being half-way there, you saw that getting that drink would be a pain, the barstools fully occupied, a line of people trying to get the overworked bartenderâs attention.
You sighed, knowing that you would have to wait for that reprieve for more than an hour, going by how slow the line was moving. After someone bumped into your sore shoulder, an answer to your question came in the form of the red sign of Exit behind you. Maybe you wouldnât get a drink, but fresh air might help stave away the recurring memory of the shape of Ghostâs palms on you. The fact that you kept thinking about it made you want to punch something⌠Fresh air it is. Without looking back, you went outside into a back alley, the cold air helping you sober up enough to not stumble through the horde of smokers blocking the entrance.
What was this bar selling that was so full? You cursed lowly, knowing that your much needed moment of peace would have to wait some more. The thought of calling for a Taxi back to base crossed your mind, your annoyance slowly rising. Unfortunately, you left your purse behind with the other two, your bra carrying the only cash you had in the currency, enough for that one drink you kept dreaming about.
With arms crossed around you, you set your pride aside and found a dark corner to sit in, the lights and the music far away. A little misplaced wooden crate allowed you to take the weight off your feet, far enough to hide you from the locals chatting away over cigarettes. You werenât as vigilant as your usual self, knowing that with your combat training, you were the most dangerous person amongst them.
With that in mind and at the relief of momentary silence, you closed your eyes, fingertips massaging your temples. Maybe it had been a blessing in disguise that you couldnât get that drink. You had been bunking with another soldier in the common barracks, the cafeteria was always busy, your itinerary was filled with missions, training, discussing intel, fighting with Ghost and being subjected to horrible jokes and prompts from your peers. This had been the only moment youâve been alone, you realized.
Peace was broken as you opened your eyes, military boots standing inches away from you. You scolded yourself for recognizing them immediately, not an ounce of you distinguishing him as enemy. Was it normal to even find annoying how silent he was when walking? You shouldâve seen him coming.
âDidnât take you for a smoker,â Ghost said, already knowing that you werenât. You knew that to your core. He was too observant and too vigilant for his own good, or for your sanity.
âIâm not. Whereâs Johnny?â You looked up, craning your neck upwards. The mass of him blended with the darkness of the sky behind him. You could only make out his eyes out of the balaclava.
âInside,â He looked down on you and you debated if your pride was enough to make you stand up. Even if it was impossible, you wanted to be enough to stand at his height, for him to recognize you at something as your equal. He better walk away before you start spewing truths that would only confess your drunken self.
âAnd what are you doing here?â
âChecking up on you.â
You held in the scoff, rolling your eyes with closed lids. You waved him away, going back to massaging your temples. âYou can tell Johnny Iâm fine. Just getting some fresh air.â
He looked sideways momentarily, eyeing the smokers nearby, then returned to pin you down with the heaviness of his gaze.
âYouâre hiding,â he said with no question in his statement, head tilting sideways with curiosity.
âNo-â
âAway from me,â he rumbled deeply, almost to himself. âIt seems we are at an impasse.â
âIâm not doing this right now. Whatever you want to talk about, will be at base with a superior present,â you glared upwards as he eyed the hands now in tight fists on your lap. He knew you were clearly referring to Price, who abided to the bureaucratic process despite his favoritism for his favorite killer. That killer wasnât you obviously.
You were considered too sentimental, as if that was another flaw.
After a beat, he opened his mouth solely to aggravate you, you were sure. âSaid superior suggested we resolve our issues outside of work.â
The comment felt like a mockery. âAnd this is out of work, right? Get a few drinks in the girl, lower her defenses⌠and just talk.â
He hummed, a sound you felt in the hollow of your chest. It was almost as if you couldnât help but react to his every word as an insult. The resentment you held for him always made you wonder that maybe, if you hadnât felt like proving something to him, you wouldâve stayed as a mediocre soldier. That his tough lessons and obvious disdain were meant due to something greater. You wanted to be grateful, to see the good outcome of the estranged liaison you have with one of your superiors, but it was draining enough to know that all effort would go to waste.
âIâll let them know you were not reciprocating, up to resolve our issues,â he answered with finality, knowing that his flat tone would make you take the bait. He didnât even blink at your scoff, your eyebrows furrowing at your irritation, him knowing too easily how to get a reaction out of you.
âIssues?â You stood up shakily, leaning your weight on the wall behind you. âWhy donât you tell me what our issues are, Lieutenant?â
In a moment of bravery, you stood on the crate. Even with the added height, the top of your head didnât even reach his clavicle.
âYouâre angry.â He crossed his arms uncharacteristically, biceps bulging at the tension. His eyes roved up and down, as if searching for a clue as to what had you so mad. And in something similar to a question, he added, âAt me.â
Furious, but you didnât correct him. You crossed your arms to imitate his pose, incredulous at the obvious statement. This time you used his tactic and stayed silent as an answer, opting for him to fill in the conversation.
âTell me why,â he demanded gruffly.
âDonât tell me what to do!â He couldnât just interrupt your me-time and start demanding answers out of you, you convinced yourself. You knew you were being difficult, but at this moment, this was merely deflecting. There was no way you would confess your insecurities upon his demands, as if the outcome were to be an improvement.
It was his turn to tilt his eyes up to the sky, seeking answers as he sighed in exasperation. In a second after contemplating, he let his guard down so plainly, you stood shocked and deadly still at his stance. What was this? His shoulders relaxed, arms resting down by his side, eyes beseeching to answer. A clear posture open to you. âI canât fix something if I donât know whatâs wrong, sweetheart.â
The endearment and the sincerity in his eyes caught you off guard. You blinked, eyes wide open, ignoring the surprise of the coiling heat stirring near your thighs.
Then he went on to call your call sign, spurring you to blurt out the first thing that came to mind.
âYouâre mean to me,â You lowered your arms to your sides like him.
You felt like a child, whining, and impossibly allocating a responsibility that didnât belong to him.
He lowered his chin in disbelief. âYouâre⌠mad at me because Iâm mean.â
His complete disregard made you do the exact thing you wanted to avoid. Spill.
âJust mean? No,â Your fury got the best of you, âYou know exactly what Iâm talking about!â
His eyes widened for the first time, your outburst uncharacteristic, even for your short temper.
âIf this is about that night-â
âYou donât treat me like the others. Even before that night.â You interrupted him, emphasizing what he implied, but felt hysterical at his clear misunderstanding. âYou punish me for things that are not my fault. After we spar, I hide bruises because my superior canât get over himself, but because its my job, I have to pretend its normal, like its professional. And then Iâm the weak one? When others donât have to take your beatings becauseâŚbecause⌠I donât know why!â
âSparring can be violent,â he justified, but to you, he didnât sound so sure of himself.
âViolent?â You said, nearly shouting. âViolent?!â Ignoring the stiffness of your shoulders and the cold of the Serbian night, you shook of your coat. It was the first time heâd seen more of your skin, your uniform tended to provide full coverage. Even that night was fast and rough, but not unclothed.
He said nothing, his eyes wide at the purple imprints of his fists beneath the thin straps. You knew he could see, even in the dimmed light, how the bruises trailed down your shoulders. He mustâve known they would paint your arms as well, but you hadnât shed your coat completely. You dared to believe he looked at you in horror, but your feelings bled over the dark alleyway against your better judgment.
âYou set impossible expectations in our missions, in drills, and then you act like Iâm some sort of failure when I canât⌠Iâm good at what I do. I do what Iâm supposed to do, which is follow orders, swallow my pride, be a good soldier. And then you looked for me to get in my bed, and then nothing from you. So, I did what was expected, I stayed quiet. Isnât that what you wanted?â
He stared and stared, reclamations going over his head as his eyes trailed the rest of your body with furrowed eyebrows. Alarmed. It was the most expressive youâve seen him. No balaclava could hide the tension that held him upright.
âAnd then you ask Price to keep me off the next mission, after I keep proving that Iâm capable. What else do you want from me?â
For the first time in a long time, he had no sass, no jokes, no answer for what heâd done.
âY/N⌠I-â He choked.
âIâm asking Price to change units. This will be my las mission with 141,â This time, he looked like he wanted to say something, but you were done with his excuses. âIâm done with your disrespect and your justified violence.â
You threw the word back at his face, Ghost tense and quiet.
âY/N?â Someone asked from the exit. As your head snapped towards the voice, you hastily put your coat on, covering your shoulders immediately.
Johnny clutched your purse, eyes roving over your face and red rimmed eyes. The hesitance to look at your body let you know he had seen enough. Blue eyes kept jumping from Ghost to you, back and forth connecting the dots. âIs everything alright?â
âYeah, just tired. Heading back to base,â You stepped down the crate, Ghost taking a sudden step back, as if youâd burned him. He officially wanted nothing to do with you.
âI will take you,â Johnny offered, gently and uncharacteristic, raising an arm to put over your shoulders in comfort, but let it fall as if he thought it over. Â In a second, he turned with an expectant palm towards Ghost. âKeys.â
He didnât ask, he demanded. And Ghost, the good soldier he was, followed orders.
âThe Lieutenant will take a cab.â
The Lieutenant didnât argue.
--
The ride was tense, Johnny flickering glances at your silent state. As you stared blankly at the windshield, he hid his anger under his worry.
âDo you⌠should you talk to someone?â Johnny asked tentatively, indicating that maybe someone of a higher ranking should get involved.
âNo,â you answered, finality in your tone.
You opened the door hastily when you arrived, avoiding any opportunity for him to ask more questions.
You had done enough talking for the night.
--
Thankfully, the common barracks were empty. But as you sat on the lower bunk bed, you felt a note crumble beneath your weight.
You stared at nothing in the dark, exhausted, taking deep breaths for a few minutes before you had to read, dreading another mission or another memo at your impertinence.
After gaining courage, the light post by the window allowed you to read that the note was a relocation to another bed.
--
The private room was yours, just like the private bathroom and the queen-sized bed. It was a slight gratification after everything that transpired a few hours ago.
And it was in another hall from your unit, further away from Ghostâs own private bedroom.
You didnât want to think about him anymore this night, you thought as the nearly boiling water cascaded down your back.
As you scrubbed yourself clean, you reminded yourself that you needed to thank Johnny, he mustâve had to pull some impossible strings to find you a private bedroom amongst the fully occupied base.
In secret, inside of your new bedroom, you finally allowed yourself to cry.

CW: smut, MDNI, dom!ellie, sub!reader, v angsty, slight bondage, cunt slapping, fingering, cunnilingus, edging, orgasm denial, ruined orgasms, lite angel symbolism, no y/n, no pdor
A/N: actually surprised I finished a req (you all applaud me) this is inspired by âGOLDWINGâ by billie.
Ellie was a sick drug. Something not to be desired. She was the epitome of the allure of indulging in something you shouldnât have, shouldnât know, try at very least.
How did she get this way- who made her like this? Anger taken out through bodies of admission in an act of revenge. Taking back what was taken from her. Her pride regained by your submission.
You could have never fathomed the aggression the loser from AP American literature could obtain. You thought sheâd beg on her knees for you. Worship your every move, starstruck by even getting the chance to touch you.
But she didnât. She reveled in taking you off your high horse, got off on watching the student body president, proper and witty, utterly depraved by getting her cunt abused by a fucking moron.
-
98- A fucking 98, you did not deserve a 98 on the midterm paper. Your work was frankly sloppy, lacked comprehension. It made you ill knowing you were turning in something so lackluster with your name slapped across the front so proudly. The only thing that made you sicker was the thought of receiving special treatment- you had an image to uphold. You got to your position in this society from your own intellect, blood, sweat, tears and all. Kissing ass for a fucking 98 wasnât in the cards.
The class began filing out as usual, like wild animals in a pack, shiny white teeth like daggers. Meshing together in their navy steam-pressed blazers, hair like defining fur, the only indication of individuality.
Except for her, sticking out like a sore thumb, the great big elephant in the room. Breaking many rulebook codes with her black nail polish, unkept hair to the standard policy, her white polo unbuttoned at the top two buttons that revealed her freckled chest. Despite her all around degenerate persona, she was irritatingly smart. Maybe if she had an ounce of charm sheâd take your place.
With the rest of the class out of sight she stares at you. Not cutting off eye contact you both rise from your chairs you practically run to Mr. Stevens desk. The slap of two papers hit his desk, a 98 and a 90 shining in red sharpie ink on the white papers.
âI donât deserve this,â comes out in unison, the sincerity in your voice cut open by the harshness in Ellies.
âPlease one at a time, ladies.â
Before the words can even escape your lips Ellie rages, âI worked my ass off on this. I deserve better than a 90,â she spits out. âI know you can do better than this Ms.Williams, I expect more from you.â Ellie scoffs back at him, âthis is bullshit,â she muffles but continues standing at his desk.
Mr.Stevens nods his head in your direction for your speech, you glance at Ellie with her arms now crossed, awaiting your protest. You brush off her insistence on staying and begin, âMr.Stevens, I appreciate your grading and understanding my agenda for the midterm, but objectively this is sub-pare work. I think you may have given me someone elseâs grade⌠maybe you mixed up my grade with Ms.Williams.â
He doesnât skip a beat, âI donât mix up grades, you earned it. Now if you two will excuse me,â Mr.Stevens directs you both to the now empty hallway.
Ellie storms out with rage, cheeks flushed and lips pressed closely, you follow behind. ââms Williamsâ? the fuck was that?â Ellie presses in a scowl, words echoed in a bare hallway.
âLook I read your paper, I think you deserved better,â you retort in an attempt to soothe her. You cant seem to keep your eyes off her cupids bow, the contrast of soft pink lips against her tired skin.
âOh thats fucking rich coming from âms I donât deserve my gradeâ youâre pathetic,â she points, eyes thinning.
âMaybe if you werenât such a bitch more people would like you,â you attempt, heat rising in your own cheeks, heart thumping roughly in your chest.
Ellies cruel disposition contorts into a grin, inching closer to your body, âyouâre fucking him arenât you? Ms. perfect sucking off the teach so she can stay on top?â
A power so foreign comes before you, using force to push your wrist into her chest, though she doesnât budge, âshut up.â
She returns your aggression, pushing your bodies flesh up against the brick wall behind you, ripping the breath from your lungs. Your hands instinctively grip into her shirt. Her eyes are wild, as if she was surprised sheâd taken it this far, or rather puzzled by the fact you havenât broken your grasp.
You both pant from the intrusion, glaring, waiting- waiting for someone to cave.
Like a dog on a leash you dragged her in, pulling her by her fabric until her lips met your own. A depraved act, met with open mouths and wandering tongues. Hatred in its finest form, digging into her as if youâd ever thought of it. A subconscious desire pulled from the depths of your cravings.
Before true indulgence she pushes you off, taking a moment to look at your hazy disposition, drunk on delinquency, âdonât ever do that again,â she pants out. Taking her thumb she wipes the saliva from your bottom lip and takes off without your response.
-
Time after time you went back. You told yourself youâd stop, never talk to her again. Yet there the keys were in the ignition, a path that you knew like the back of your hand. Leading, controlling your own fate of defacement.
âCan you please just open the door,â you plead on her doorsteps, mind and body corrupted- to only be pleased by the mental games, the destruction in forms of submitting to her.
Strung up like an old doll long forgotten in the attic, bound wrist behind your back and ankles tied to the head of her bed, vulnerable and needy.
âWhat now? Use your fucking words,â Ellie remarks before spitting on your neglected cunt. Your body winces at the sensation of the hot liquid dripping down the pulsing flesh, âplease I promise Iâll do whatever you ask.â
She hovers over your squirming body, carful to not give you the satisfaction. Gripping your jaw in her hand, âdo you ever pay attention to what I tell you? You donât deserve to come,â cocking her free hand back to lay a purposeful slap to your slick folds causing you to scream out from the blissful pain.
She lays another one into the already beat red skin, a cruel grin growing on her lips as she hears you enjoying it. âYouâd let me do anything, wouldnât you?â she asks glaring at your tucked in lip, eyes glossy. You nod back at her, signaling your approval for using your body as her personal vessel.
Somehow it was good enough for her, dropping down to your perked nipples and sucking it into her teeth as she uses her hand to cover your eyes. Youâd learn very early on that you werenât allowed to watch her use her mouth on you. In the odd occasion sheâd let you have your cunt in her mouth shed have your face shoved in the sheets while she took you from behind. She never told you why- and you didnât dare ask.
Your wrist wriggle behind your back as your chest arches into her mouth, hot and wet. You obsess over what it would feel like on your mouth again, most nights were spent only thinking of her mouth- foreign, an impenetrable fortress. You began to chase the chance of the feeling her again.
You feel as her mouth comes off of the swollen bud as she removes the hand on your eyes, âdonât look,â she says with no threat in her tone, but you donât risk crossing her.
You shut your exhausted eyes, dropping your head back as you feel her wrap her arms around the meat of your thighs. She drags an antagonizing strip up your slit, jolting your body into the mouth.
She goes as slow as possible, providing as little pressure she can muster up to the swell of your clit, but from her slaps it wouldnât take much. Your body akin to a fish gasping for air out of water, squirming under her touch. She digs her fingers deep into the flesh as a warning.
âIf you ever want to come again Id advise you behave.â
âP-please,â you plead to her, legs shaking as you whimper her name over and over like a prayer.
âI said no, i swear to god Iâll ruin every fucking orgasm,â sliding her two fingers into your clenching hole she drives slow pumps as she returns her mouth to your clit.
Your face contorts in concentration, attempting to hold yourself back but you could only be held off for so long.
âEllie- Ellie!â bursting at the seams, your body detesting her rules, letting the hot white cum coat her fingers. She only fucks you harder, faster through your orgasm. This is a game you werenât to win, rather to allow herself to revel in your pain. She got off on destroying your mind, making it to where you can only be pleased by her punishment.
Ellie kept her word, working you up on the edge of finishing and stopping completely, laughing at your pathetic state, crying and begging to come.
Clipping your wings, she hung them on her walls as a trophy. Pleas echoing her room, come splattering her sheets, your lips chapped and neglected.

In-world itâs been 9 years since the events of DA:I
âAt the end of Trespasser, Solas declared he was going to break the world to rebuild itâ
The section of the game that we saw in the Gameplay Reveal takes place âafter Varric and another handful of adventurers, the initial Veilguard, have been tracking him down throughout Thedasâ
If you have played previous DA games, thereâs a lot of lore and references in DA:TV that will add to the experience
No save transfer, but there are opportunities to reference what you did in previous games
Tevinter is the most impressive civilization in modern Thedas because itâs a nation that runs on magic
Lore/art direction: âMagic has started seeping into the world through Solasâ ritualâ, âand so youâre seeing the effects of that on the space, and on the visuals as wellâ
The CC team and character art team spent a lot of time working on making sure that hairstyles behaved appropriately, in a realistic way, and on representing a lot of different hairstyles
They wanted to provide more opportunities to spend time with the characters in a way that previous games didnât allow for as much
They âdid start a first version of Dragon Age 4 after Trespasser. Anthem came out, we needed to ship development to that. And when we came back we really rebooted development, started fresh, but the story has remained the same throughout, the goals of that story have remained the same. Weâve always wanted to take Solasâ story and put a final conclusion on thatâ (Fel note: the previous project was code-named Joplin. It was since revised to such an extent that its code name changed to Morrison, per the Bio25 book. This sounds like lots of the story, beats, themes etc from Joplin have remained despite the project change :>)
âA lot of what we want to do in this game is show the story as much as tell through conversation, dialogueâ. They want the spectacle to be part of the storytelling, they want the player to be able to feel the story happening around them as much as it being told to them
They arenât getting more specific regarding the release date as yet beyond Fall 2024
Game is coming out on Xbox Series S and X, PS5, PC
Will it be playable on Steam Deck? They are ânot going to get into that quite yet, soâ
