Court of Darkness: Basket Full of Troubles

Description: A short story featuring Toa and Knight in honor of Knight’s birthday. @jaysquid @voltagefandomproject if y’all are interested 🙂

Toa walked to his chambers, pondering a matter of utmost seriousness—Knight’s birthday gift. Each potential gift that came to mind—imported milk, spellbooks, Qelsan chocolate—he dismissed as not worthy enough or something he knew Knight would likely receive from one of the other valets. Toa sighed as he undid the magical lock to his room and reached to open the door.

Hmm. The door was manually locked. Quite unusual. Toa then heard noises from within.

Mew! Mew mew!

“Oi, shhh! Get back here! Toa’s gonna kill me if he finds you here!” Knight’s voice rose anxiously as he scurried throughout Toa’s room.

“Knight, what is that commotion inside?” Toa knocked on his door, feeling ridiculous at requesting entrance to his quarters.

“Now’s not a great time! Ah, don’t do that!” The sound of something falling and breaking echoed behind the door. “Gah, nooo!”

“You’re forbidding me from my own chambers?” Toa raised his eyebrows in annoyance.

“Um, no of course not, more like—“

Mew! Meeeeeeew!

“Knight.” Toa tapped his fingers on the door knob. “Are you incapacitated?”

“Obviously not!”

“Has Avari somehow rendered you immobile? Or, is Fenn in there preventing you from moving freely?”

“No…”

“Then open the door this instant.” Knight shuffled to the door, opened it a crack, and quickly pulled Toa inside before locking it again.

“Knight, what is going on?” Toa turned to Knight. It was then he saw them. Carnage in fluffy feline form.

Kittens. Kittens everywhere. Two black and white kittens were leaping over one another atop of Toa’s bed. A kitten’s head popped up from within a teapot on a side table, its whiskers twitching. A black kitten with a white patch on its chest sat on the edge of a bookshelf, looking at Knight with its bright yellow eyes. The kitten tilted its head, smirked, and began knocking books onto the floor. Two more kittens darted across the floor, running underneath the couch. And finally, a pure white kitten rolled playfully on its back on Toa’s desk. This kitten purred contently at the jar of blue ink it had spilled all over official Qelsan documents. The kitten’s paws and the tip of its tail were stained blue, a string of paw prints all over the desk.

“You have obviously not been taught manners.” Toa gingerly picked up the white kitten from his desk and removed the ink from from its fur with magic. “You are too proud of your mischief.”

“Opal hasn’t been able to tend for them as she normally would!” Knight defended the feline as best he could. “We’re sorry!”

“Opal?” Toa started wiping off the ink from his desk. He groaned as he saw a set of paw prints on a letter meant for King Gilbert. Knight sheepishly retreated to his room and brought out a beautiful long haired black and white female cat in his arms, her right front paw in a makeshift bandage.

“Opal’s one of the friendlier cats at the peer. She hurt her paw.” Knight scratched behind Opal’s ears, eliciting a contented purr. “I brought her back to see what we had at the infirmary to help her, but I couldn’t leave her kittens behind! So, I brought them all in a basket and—“

“And clearly they escaped the confines of your room.” Toa filled in the remaining gaps to Knight’s tale. A kitten emerged from under the couch and began climbing Toa’s leg.

“I beg your pardon. You were not given permission to climb me like a tree.” Toa looked sternly at the kitten. Opal mewed warningly at the kitten and it promptly let go of Toa and ran away.

“Thank you Opal.” Toa inclined his head at the mother cat. It was clear Knight and Opal were bonded—this cat was the first one he knew of that Knight had named. A bolt of inspiration hit Toa.

“Knight, what will happen to the kittens after Opal recovers from her injury?”

“I, er, I’m still figuring that out. I’ve been asking shopkeepers throughout Colde if they need good mousers or want a pet.” Knight bit his lip. “Haven’t had any luck yet.”

“What if I found the kittens homes, as your birthday gift?” Toa petted a kitten on his bed. “I will throughly investigate all potential adopters before the kittens are given away.” Toa mentally started thinking of a number of noble families, professors, and students not associated with his fanatic fan club that would likely be the best candidates for adopters.

“Toa, thank you!” Knight beamed with joy and squeezed Opal.

“As for Opal,” Toa continued, “she can remain here with you Knight permanently if you wish.” Opal seemingly understood and nuzzled against Knight’s chin. Knight smiled wider.

The perfect gift for Knight was perhaps not so difficult after all.

Secret sweetheart, who is secretly or not so secretly touch starved? Girl who is the sweetest kindest soul in existence? A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN?

We all know Toa loves sweets, right? Honestly, he probably falls for her one day when she gifts him some extra cookies she baked. He's like, what is this warm feeling in my chest? And after that, it's over for him. Once they're together,  he'll just appear nearby whenever she's baking. Is one hundred percent ready to fund her dream bakery because he's just so God damn proud.

Both of them are honest with each other. Unless Toa is trying to get a treat He just has no time for dishonesty or mincing his words, and Joanne hates dishonesty. And it works. If there are disagreements they are able to resolve it quickly. If there's something either of them doesn't like, it is brought out into the open.

Toa's family is…cold…to say the least. Naturally, even though Joanne has worked hard to overcome her insecurities, it won't be hard for them to come back up around those assholes (derogatory). But Toa, who has to deal with his own insecurities around them, won't put up with it when it comes to her. If something comes up verbally, he'll cut them down in a way only Toa can. To combat the nonverbal attacks, he spends all his time making sure she can't feel unloved.

Feeding into this, go ahead. Tell him the outfits you want. He can get it made. He's more than happy to help her get clothes that she likes, that fit the way she wants, and that make her feel comfortable. Dating her has turned him into a bit of a sugar daddy, he can't help it. As long as every once in a while, she lets him design something for her. He is sure she'll like it, especially since he has become so acquainted with her personal tastes.

"I thought you said you were busy, dear," Joanne said with a laugh. She was baking in the dorm kitchen, and didn't so much see her boyfriend, as feel him show up. 

Toa emerged from the shadows, a light smile on his face.

"I finished early," he said, subtly putting the paperwork that he had brought with him behind his back. 

"Hm," she hummed, "well the cake will be finished in an hour."

He nodded, before sitting in a chair and working on the papers that he didn't deem worth hiding anymore.

Or he intended to, but as Joanne went around the kitchen cleaning up after herself, he found himself looking less and less at the papers, and more and more at her. Pretty soon, he was just unapologetically watching her. 

Joanne blushed when she noticed. 

"What are you staring at?"

"You. You look quite lovely today," he said simply, making her blush even more.

"Toa, you can't just say things like that," she laughed, and he smirked.

"Oh? Is my affection too much for you?" He stood up, wrapping his arms around her and directing her face to meet his gaze.

"N-no," she said, pulling away at the last second, causing Toa's eyes to widen as she imitated his smirk from earlier.

"I have to check on the cake," she shrugged innocently.

Toa shook his head and returned to his seat, realizing he could only get cake if he was a good boy. He could, and would, tease her later. Rest assured.

Demigods x monster! 141 au

Because it would be funny. I love the fics of demigods being a bit more monster than initially lead on but it doesn’t really manifest til they either get to camp (a safe place) or hit puberty. Think about it! Zeus children who smell like ozone and seem permanently caught in a storm, eagle feathers growing in. Children of Athena with too big eyes and the ability to swivel their heads like an owl, owl down growing in. Children of Hephaestus who run incredibly hot, oil in their veins and metal for skin in some places. Their hearts ticks and their fingers whir. Children of Apollo who are hard to look at, who literally glow from the sun in their blood. Who sing like birds, and predict plagues. Children of Aphrodite whose appearance changes daily. Whose eyes never settle on a color and well maintained claws. Whose honeyed words can bind or break someone.

Now add in monster! 141. A one winged dragon, a harpy, a werewolf, and a wraith. Who see these children or adults presenting monster like features but humans look at them in confusion when it comes up in conversation.

A team who gets surprised when a bronze knife is pressed into their ribs a teenager because “I swear that’s a harpy.”

A task force who goes to investigate when manhattan goes completely dark. Only to find monster children in ancient battle armor dead, dying, or fighting for their lives against creatures not seen in centuries.

A task force that gets dragged into the fight with each demigod war. Who try to help the little monster children when the weight of the world is too much. Who reach out to allies and contacts because these are children who react like soldiers when faced with a threat.

Ok. Here is something bizarre that I was wondering of how your OC reacted to this.

Your OC is the one who's taking orders in a fast food restaurant. Like McDonald's, Carls Jr, Starbucks-ANY.

And once they're about to take their LAST order before taking breaks.

They recognize a familiar accent from someone. A SAMOAN accent and you can hear BUNCH of people and kids in the background. (It was Kanoa and Tiala’s family by the way-)

This is gonna take a LONG time for you to take their orders. What are their reactions?

(Because I saw this on TikTok that the guy was taking SO many orders from a SAMOAN family and he was looking TIRED.)

Ruz: hello what would you like to order

Kanoa: *takes a deep breath before..*

I’ll have a mocha caramel latte chino made with skim milk with no whipped cream. Please put that in a grande cup, but use the same amount of coffee you use in a tall, that way that there’s an inch of room on top. To stir my own nutmeg without spilling any coffee at all!!
