Sinister - a (late) Club Penguin halloween fanfic
Ignore the fact that this isn't a fanfic blog. Or a Club Penguin blog (I'm not posting this on a fanfic site so I wanted to put this somewhere people could find it ^_^)
This is the story of a scientist, his assistant, and a machine that would change their lives – or, Skip and his no good very bad grandfather
A little backstory for Skip I came up with nine years ago. This is a new version of an old fanfic I wrote when I was 14! I've always loved this story so I wanted to write it again. I hope it gets to someone who might find it interesting ^_^

We recently finished an awesome ARG in a club penguin discord server I’m in, so in celebration I’m gonna be drawing some incorrect quotes of some of the ppl and characters involved! And I uh, thought it would be helpful to draw all of the characters on one sheet beforehand for references and context. Or maybe I just wanted to torture myself. Idk.
I also couldn’t fit them on the page with the others, so Banjo gets special treatment and a page all to themself :3
I should mention that only one of these characters are mine (that being Cali). All others belong to other people on the server, or Club Penguin in general!

Halloween 2014: Club Penguin's BEST Halloween Party
Greetings friends, and Happy Halloween! It’s the true season of celebrating spooks and frights. While I personally don’t spend much time engaging in the usual Halloween festivities nowadays, back when I was young, I was all-in on this holiday. It was one of my favorite holidays growing up, and I still hold a soft spot for it today. Something I can say the same thing for is Club Penguin, one of my favorite online games from my childhood, which I still hold dear to my heart even all these years later. In honor of what has now become 19 years since Club Penguin’s launch, and it being Halloween, I want to take a look back at Club Penguin's 2014 Halloween Party, and examine why it is, in my humble opinion, Club Penguin’s best Halloween Party.
So going into this, I’m assuming that people are already familiar with the children’s MMO known as Club Penguin, so I won't dive too deep into the game in general, but I will explain what a Club Penguin Party is, for anyone unfamiliar with the concept.
On the children’s MMO known as Club Penguin, where you played as a penguin and waddled around to meet new friends, there would be events which took place each month, called Parties, which would see locations on the island redecorated to a specific theme, new items made available during the Party, new party-specific locations, party-specific activities and/or minigames, and even appearances from the mascot characters, such as Gary, Rookie, Jet Pack Guy, Rockhopper, and even Herbert on some occasions! Parties would typically begin around the midpoint of one month and would end at the beginning of the next month. Some months saw yearly renditions of party themes, such as the April Fools party in April, Holiday Party in December, and, of course, the Halloween Party in October. Parties in general were a great way to change things up on the island and to introduce new features, items, minigames, locations, etc.. Over time, these parties did wane in quality, especially when less original parties began to happen and more parties meant to tie into Disney’s other properties began to happen instead (though some exceptions apply). However, even with the flood of shoehorned-in Disney promotion parties, the Club Penguin team still knew how to make some great events, and the Halloween Parties were no exception. Halloween 2014, in particular, felt like a true game-changer for the theme. In the past, Halloween Parties had gone from simple changes to the appearances of rooms, to hosting small scavenger hunts, to introducing haunted mansions, to even allowing penguins to transform into monsters, such as vampires, werewolves, zombies, and even ghosts. But for the 10th Halloween Party, the Club Penguin team decided to take a new approach toward the tried and true Halloween Party theme, one which was unlike any other Halloween Party which preceded it…
Now, I’m going to document the events of the party as they happened in 2014 in text form, but for those who want to experience the party more directly, there is a full playthrough of the party linked here.
Leading up to the release of the party, the Puffle Hotel began to see strange alterations in appearance, from the Rainbow Puffle fountain changing to a Bat Puffle fountain in the Lobby, to ghosts appearing in the mirrors in the Spa, to even squid arms replacing the wall plants on the Rooftop, it was clear something was wrong with the hotel. In Issue #470 of the Club Penguin Times, it was revealed the ghostly uncle of Gary the Gadget Guy, Gariwald VIII, would be paying the island a visit to analyze the paranormal activity emanating from the Puffle Hotel. Time passed, and nothing happened until October 23rd. Overnight, the Puffle Hotel shot up 10 stories, with the Hotel receiving a spooky redesign, complete with Ghost Puffles haunting the floors. Gariwald was also reported missing, with the only explanation being he was somewhere in the Hotel. Gary tasked penguins with going to the Hotel and locating Gariwald, granting them access to a special menu which gave them information on solving the puzzles on the new floors, along with tracking their overall progress. All that remained was to enter the Hotel and solve the mystery which lay within…
Upon first arrival, penguins are greeted by Skip, the new Bellhop for the Hotel. He serves as a guide, informing penguins of how to proceed and commenting on what they find in the Hotel. The first task he assigns to penguins is to go to the Basement and restart power to the elevator, as the elevator is without power, thus making ascending the Hotel impossible.
"This old basement is very dark. Don't get lost in the shadows. The ghost puffles haunt this place and always mess with the power!" - Tour Guide description
In the basement, penguins are treated to a simple three switch puzzle, where you must find a way to turn on all three switches to restore power to the elevator. Upon completion, a Ghost Puffle flies into the basement, remains inside for a short period, before flying out. The Ghost Puffles must be an important piece of the puzzle, as they appeared when the Hotel shot up to 13 stories, but how do they fit in? What do they have to do with Gariwald? Perhaps the upper floors will contain the answers to these questions.
Going to the elevator greets you with an expanded floor selection screen, on account of the Hotel ascending 10 floors overnight. As the days went by, more and more floors became available to explore, encouraging penguins to return each day to continue the ascent up the Hotel, though oddly enough, the 13th floor was labeled as “Out of order”, and it was not possible to ascend to it, with Skip saying nothing was up there. In any case, it seemed the first step toward solving the mystery would lie with the 4th floor.
"Here is the Sitting Room. No one knows who lights these fires… but they're always burning. Watch out for the sabre-tooth fluffy rug. Some say they've seen it move!" - Tour Guide description
Going to the 4th Floor, named the Sitting Room, you are greeted by a large room illuminated with teal candle flames. The room appeared to be hiding something from penguins, but what?
The solution turns out to be to simply extinguish the flames by using snowballs. Upon doing so, penguins are able to collect a large gear, which turns out to be a part for the Ghost Catcher on the 12th floor, known as Storage. It seems the Ghost Puffles have scattered missing parts from the catcher throughout the Hotel, though why remains unanswered. Nevertheless, it seems the only way forward is to continue ascending the Hotel and recover these parts, wherever they may lie.
"Everyone stay close to the elevator! No one knows what's down there but it sure isn't the fourth floor..." - Tour Guide description
The 5th floor, named the Deluxe Suite, is composed of an empty room with a large hole in the floor, with three floating suitcases with numbered tags attached to them. These suitcases simply serve to give cosmetics to players, with Members getting access to special cosmetics due to their paid membership status.
"Welcome to the Dining Room! It looks like the ghosts were messy. They always do this when they don't like the meal." - Tour Guide description
The 6th floor, named the Dining Room, is just that: A large dining room, where three large plates sit on the tables in the room, with one plate reflecting a purple beam of light into the elevator. The puzzle here is simply to rotate the plates such that the light hits the center Puffle figure, opening a door to reveal another part for the Ghost Catcher.
"Here's the Ballroom! You can dance through the halls and play the piano! Now which way do we go..." - Tour Guide description
The 7th floor, named the Ballroom, greets penguins with four colored hallways, a piano off to the side, and colored arrows in the center of the room, corresponding to each hallway. Navigating the hallways using the arrows grants access to the next part.
"They say this pool is home to a tentacled monster! No lifeguard on duty so swim at your own risk!" - Tour Guide description
The 8th floor, named the Pool, contains a particularly murky pool surrounded by Jack-o-lanterns. Destroying every single one revealed the next part.
"The Library holds dangerous secrets, feel free to search. But don't get lost in the maze or the tour moves on without you!" - Tour Guide description
The 9th floor, named the Library, had a large red floor switch blocked off with short walls, forming a small maze, adorned by books on the far walls. Navigating the maze to the switch opens up the location of the next part.
"The tenth floor is really eerie. A ghost keeps writing messages but no one knows what they mean." - Tour Guide description
The 10th floor, named the Luxury Suite, looked very similar to the Deluxe Suite, in that the floor has nothing beyond a large gaping hole and three numbered suitcases, awarding cosmetics to penguins, with the notable differences being the purple lights and the inclusion of green text which read “The 13th Floor”. What could this message be referring to? The 13th floor itself? Or is there something which awaits on the inaccessible 13th floor? Hopefully the answer to this question presents itself soon, for the top of the Hotel is nearing.
"This used to be an elegant balcony but now there are snapping plants and a riddling gargoyle. I think its name is Carmad." - Tour Guide description
The 11th floor, named the Balcony, features a large statue and four emoticons next to it. The statue will only communicate in riddles, and penguins would have to react with the correct emoticon to solve the riddle. Solving all riddles awards the final piece of the Ghost Catcher. With all the parts on-hand, all that remained was to go to the 12th floor and activate the Catcher.
"Here we are! The mysterious twelfth floor... home to the ghost puffles! Are they behind the hotel haunting? Or is it something more sinister!?" - Tour Guide description
The 12th floor, named Storage, is where the Ghost Catcher is stored. Upon arrival, you are greeted with an impressive machine, but with no parts, it remains lifeless. But with every part in place, the device is ready to capture the Ghost Puffles and put an end to this chaos. By standing on the floor switch, the grand machine whirs to life, and successfully captures all the Ghost Puffles! Hooray, the Hotel is saved, right?!
Unfortunately, that would not be the case.
Once the Ghost Puffles were captured, a large laser cage then opened up, ensnaring any penguin on the switch which activated the Ghost Catcher. It is here that it was revealed that the penguins had been deceived this whole time. The new bellhop, Skip, was only helping penguins recover the parts of the Ghost Catcher so they would help him accomplish his goal, which was to use the Ghost Puffles as a source of energy. In fact, Skip was never mortal, for he was a ghost in disguise this whole time. He lifts the machine up to the 13th floor, where we find Gariwald, also captured by Skip. Skip now boasts about his plans to haunt the entirety of Club Penguin using the energy of the Ghost Puffles, with no one to oppose him. No one, except for any penguin in the laser cage, that is. With one well-thrown snowball, penguins were able to free themselves from Skip’s prison, ready to save the island once more. After a close-call with Skip, in which another well-aimed snowball successfully incapacitates him long enough for penguins to make it past him, penguins are able to step onto a big red switch which hurts Skip, releasing the Ghost Puffles and Gariwald, with the former fleeing into the night, while Skip is defeated and flees into the night as well, saving the island. Gariwald gives his gratitude for saving him and the Ghost Puffles, and all is well on the island. Following the penguins victory, all penguins get Skip’s hat, Members are able to adopt Ghost Puffles for the rest of the party, the 13th floor is now open as a hangout area, and the island is safe once more.
"The evil ghost that haunted the hotel... was defeated here. When the hotel returns to normal... I guess I'll be out of a job!" - Tour Guide description
So now that we know what the party was like for penguins of October 2014, what made it the best Halloween party in my eyes?
This was something I went back and forth on, as there is a lot I genuinely love about this party, but in the end, there were three things which I felt made Halloween 2014 stand out as the best Halloween party for me:
It’s unique theme and elements
It’s fun and engaging puzzles
It’s openness to both Members and Non-Members
To address each point in more detail:
Halloween 2014 was a completely original twist on a party concept which had been a part of Club Penguin since its inception. The inclusion of the Puffle Hotel a year prior allowed for the Club Penguin team to create a variant on the Halloween party which had never been done before, crafting a setting which no party after would replicate. It was here that Ghost Puffles made their debut, appearing in all following Halloween parties, along with introducing the brand-new villain Skip, who, despite never appearing ever again, remains a personal highlight of the party for me and many others for his unique appearance and attribute of being a ghost, being Club Penguin's only villain character to be such.
Each floor contained a unique challenge to face for players to complete the Ghost Catcher, along with building a mystery about its purpose through collecting parts hidden on the new floors, which kept players coming back for more. While these challenges are fairly simplistic in retrospect, they were designed with kids in mind, so it makes sense as to why they aren’t overly complicated.
Unlike in previous Halloween parties, where the main gimmick/location of the party was locked to Members, the Puffle Hotel’s extra 10 floors were all accessible for Non-Members, with the only benefit of being a Member was additional cosmetics and the ability to adopt a Ghost Puffle. Beyond that, the party struck an excellent balance between allowing Non-Members to enjoy the party and Members being given additional content to remember the party by.
So in conclusion, Halloween 2014 represents to me one of the truly great parties of Club Penguin. From its haunted hotel theme, to its openness of all penguins of all statuses, to the introduction of a completely original villain and a species which would reappear in subsequent parties, Halloween 2014 left a legacy which was felt even in parties which succeeded it, and even today, 10 years after it made its grand debut on October 23rd. As the 10th Halloween party, Halloween 2014 had a lot to live up to, and it set the bar to a level that no succeeding party would match, save for one party. But, that is a story…for another time…
Happy Halloween, my friends, and thank you for reading. I hope to return sometime soon with more.

hello, I didn't know where else to ask but since this blog is all about club penguin facts, is it true that g billy and gary are related, or is it just a headcanon from fans? I've seen it mentioned if a few wikis but there are never sources cited
Yes, G Billy being related to Gary is just popular fanon. The only (named) members of Gary's family are Garianna, Gariwald VIII, and Garugg the Ugg Ugg.
(Source: Club Penguin Magazine Issue #35 - Gary's Quest!)
We also see additional, unnamed relatives alongside them in Gary's Quest! after they rally their relatives (all from the past, present, and future) to help Garianna banish Scorn after she accidentally freed him.

i just finished reading all of that stuff and wow it's so cool!!! it really feels like those two could fit right in to regular club penguin :-) very fun guys! fun dynamics with other characters too! i really appreciate the generational pain-in-the-butt and JOT and rookie being friends despite rookie's personality seeming like their total opposite lol. very interesting directions to take them in
you mentioned a third jester... do you have anything on this guy? or just kind of ambiguous for the sake of it? i def appreciate that but i wanna know ALL I CAN about these guys!!! they're so fun!!!
THANK YOU SO MUUUCH!! IM REALLY GLAD PPL ARE INTERESTED IN MY SILLY JESTER GUYS 😭 i thought they wouldnt fit in at all..
also YES the third jester!! because of how much this character's existence changes canon and stuff, im not really going to mention their name or say too much about them. BUT ONE THING I CAN SAY is that they are dead. very dead. 6 ft under. dead as gone can be. deader than great x8 uncle gariwald, and their death is one of the reasons why JoT is so mad!

Skip and Gariwald: The First and Last Meeting
A lil one-shot au describing to origins of Skip and Gariwald’s interesting relationship.
-
When Gariwald was a younger scientist, he got to know a young man named Skip. Skip worked at one of the prestigious hotels in club penguin as the hotel's bell boy. He was generally a nice and hardworking fellow, although a bit mischievous. He and his fellow employees, who were also his friends, would always pull fun but harmless pranks on the residents as well as the older staff as a way entertain and give the hotel a unique touch. (As no one would get hurt, they would get scolded but never severely punished.) Gariwald would visit the hotel frequently as his good friend owned it, and met Skip in the process.
At first, Skip felt intimidated that Gariwald would always outsmart him in his pranks. But regardless, he tried harder and started to see Gariwald as a challenger. During one fateful prank, an invention Gariwald was carrying fell and seemed to have broke, but in reality it got disassembled. Skip, not aware of this and being the kind hearted person he was, immediately felt bad and tried to help him fix it. Gariwald reassured him and effortlessly put the invention back together. It was then that Gariwald got to see Skip's true colors, and started to converse with him. From there, they developed a father/son bond, and Skip would always happily greet him and tell him about the new pranks he and his friends have planned for that day.
After about a year, Gariwald breaks the news that he must travel for his research. Skip is extremely saddened by this news, and tries to convince him to stay. Gariwald tells him that he will try to be back soon, and that they will keep in touch. as Skip never had a proper father figure growing up, he was having a lot of trouble accepting that. On the day Gariwald came to bid the hotel staff goodbye, he hugs Skip and gives him a small momento of when they first met: a bolt from the invention that in fact got loose when it fell. Skip promises to hold on to it and treasure it, even after he comes back. little did they both know, however, that their reunion would be one they would not have for another 40 years.
A week after Gariwald's departure and letters being exchanged back and forth, a tragedy occurs in the island that would forever change the island's history. For reasons unknown, the hotel suddenly catches fire and breaks down, trapping everyone inside. Skip was the last one to die, witnessing all his friends get crushed or burned alive, and died with no peace in his heart. The hotel then crumbles to the ground, and all the remains of everyone and everything burn to ashes. In an attempt to keep this as silent as possible, the island made sure that no mention of this tragedy reached outside the island, and eventually, outside that time period. Miles away, as the news did not reach beyond, Gariwald wondered why Skip's letters mysteriously stopped, but because of his work, he became preoccupied and forgot after some time. It wasn't until decades later when he returned that he began to question the "shutdown" of the hotel after noticing the island had changed.
Upon researching all that was available to him, he was also experimenting with ghost communication at the same time, and decided to combine the two. During a successful run, Gariwald got in touch with the last person he expected: Skip the bellhop. Out of shock and well past due grief, he immediately began to question Skip on all that happened, but notices something is off. Skip's demeanor is different, and a lot darker than before. Although his appearance hasn’t changed, his mind and heart definitely were no longer as pure as they used to be. They break out into an argument, Skip being furious at Gariwald for not returning sooner, and Gariwald at Skip for not letting him speak. needless to say, Gariwald saw Skip's vengeful nature growing inside him, and decided he must do something about it. But before he could attempt to capture him, skip uses his newly awakened powers to silence Gariwald permanently, and proceeds to go into hiding. It was at that moment that the truth of the hotel's fate would forever be lost (...or would it?)
Now, when penguins ask Gariwald as a ghost what happened in his mansion on the night he mysteriously disappeared, he simply states that he was experimenting and accidentally turned himself into ghost. Despite being killed by who he considered a son, he swore to never tell others of Skip's existence as a way to show he still cares.
And he holds onto this promise, until a certain halloween night in the year 2014 where skip makes his return, and he is forced to break is silence once and for all...

Head Canon:
Skip used to be Gariwald's assistant before he died and hates him due to thinking he (Gariwald VII) betrayed him when Gariwald tried to get help for Skip after something happened, most likely a machine break down and Ghost Skip can and will eat the souls (essence) of random penguins if he has the chance to...
Ooooo that's really interesting to think about! Like what exactly went wrong? Was it Gariwalds fault or was it a complete accident? Maybe it was skips fault and he jist never knew? Does Gariwald know that's why skips mad? Does he ever get to explain. Honestly I really like skip as a character and I wish they'd done more with him. But This is an amazing headcanon!
