No Upside Down steddie AU where Steve gradually meets the members of Hellfire (-Eddie) in and out of school and they all come to befriending him really fast because âSteve Harrington is actually a good dudeâ
But Eddie fucking hates it.
And this only spurs Hellfire on because they think him getting mad over Steve Harrington is fucking hilarious.
Jeff who takes a foods class in third period and Steve does to and then the teacher pairs them for a baking project and Jeff gets to go to Casa Harrington. And he realizes rather quickly that Steve really likes baking and cooking and actually knows what heâs doing and that heâs not just taking the class for an easy A.
Brian (Iâve named him Brian, yes), meets Steve in Art class. Like Jeff, he thought Steve was taking it for an easy A but when seats are changed and they sit together he realizes that, no, Steveâs actually kind of good at drawing (particularly scenery). They get to talking about one of Steveâs sketches and the rest is history.
Gareth doesnât officially meet Steve until later, but he does see him out with the kids at the arcade. Gareth works at the arcade and thereâs this particular group of kids that just irks himâ turns out theyâre Steveâs gaggle. He watches in begrudging amusement while Steve rounds them up like a pro.
Then Gareth officially meets him after Hellfire one day. Itâs fucking windy and heâs just leaving to school to go home when the papers and sheets he was holding are fucking torn from his hands. Steve grabs the papersâ there after some kind of sports practiceâ and makes sure Gareth has them secured in his bad before leaving with a dorky finger-waggle wave.
And Eddie just downright refuses.
And then the school year ends and Steve graduates. And heâs convinced he doesnât have to see Steve again.
Until, of course, Mike Dustin and Lucas join.
Jeff, Gareth, and Brian are all ecstatic to share their own run-ins of Steve Harrington to the three boys who so clearly idolize him. Gareth happily recalls how Steve âtamedâ them in the arcade every time he came in.
Eddie sits in brooding silence.
And then Lucas joins the basketball team. And sureâ Jeffâs on the volleyball teamâ but basketball jocks are so much worse than volleyball jocks.
Mike and Dustin, however thrown out of orbit they were at first, seem to settle in eventually and learn to plan around it. They think that anything that makes Lucas happy is a good thing (even if it did take a bit of a talk with Will for them to realize).
But Eddie? Eddie canât stand it.
Which is why he refuses to move the date for the final campaign.
But Eddie doesnât even get to introduce Vecna before Steve Harrington himself is all but breaking down the fucking door.
Eddie has this whole argument in his head that quickly dwindles when he sees the pure anger in Steveâs eyes (and also because Steve is really fucking pretty holy shit).
Steve tells Dustin Mike and Erica to pack up and get to the game before he drags them and you know what?
They listen.
Including hard ass Erica Sinclair.
And then idk Steve and Eddie get into a whole fight about.
But Steve makes it very clear that he doesnât appreciate Eddie making Lucas feel like he canât be happy doing DnD and basketball because that poor boy deserves nice things dammit.
And Eddie sleeps on it over the weekend before hunting Lucas down first thing Monday morning to apologize.
Lucas forgive Eddie (against Eddieâs protest because let the man grovel) but makes Eddie also apologize to Steve.
Which Eddie does by showing up to the Harrington Estate.
Eddie apologizes and they get high together and the rest is history.
.
I might actually make this into something, itâs already pretty fleshed out but eh

Part Eight
A03
We left off: Eddie has an injured leg, Gareth is concussed, thereâs a now injured manticore in Hawkins and possibly a moving gate in the walls of the lab, which is storing mysterious, glowing green goo. Prior to all that, Steve was having a breakdown about leaving Hawkins brought on by his parents returning home.
Gareth has noticed Steveâs âcrushâ on Eddie, *all* of Hellfire is painfully aware of Eddieâs crush on Steve, and Hopper just showed up to the Byers in Scooby Doo pajamas.
Cue the music.
One minute Hopper was shaking a finger at the pile of children on the couch, spittle flying from his mouth as he demanded everyone both talk and shut up--
(âThey canât do both, Jim.â
âI donât care Joyce, I--â
âWell I care, and youâre in my house, so I suggest you shut up.â
âFine, but--â
âJim!â
âI was shutting up!â)
--and the next Steve had wrapped Garethâs own hands around a warm mug, quietly leaning into his ear to ask if he was okay.
Gareth nodded jerkily, blinking back to the present, fighting off the panic attack that had dogged him all night.
âYup. Iâm great--good! Iâm totally good.â
Steve snorted (a gross but common Steve sound) but otherwise left Gareth with a squeeze of his shoulder, before taking the other mug he had over to Eddie.
Who, Gareth realized, was staring at Hopper with the resigned air of a man glaring down his own executioner.
âWhat I donât understand,â Lucas was saying as Steve tried to get Eddie to take a mug, âis what the manticoreâs guarding.â
âYou didnât hear the green goo story?â Dustin said conversationally, like this was a Tuesday and not the middle of the night after a monster attack, head craning around to look at his friend.
Gareth had to give it to the kid, he had balls of fucking iron to ignore the look Hopper was shooting his way.
âGreen goo?â Hopper butted in, needing an answer but clearly not eager to hear it
(Behind Gareth, Steve had resorted to physically taking Eddieâs hands, and wrapping them around the mug. He kept them there, fingers over Eddieâs as he leaned in, whispering something into the older teenâs ear, clearly trying to get his attention off Hopper.
It didnât seem to be working until Steve said--or did--something, and then suddenly Eddie was taking in a shuddering, wobbly breath, eyes darting to look up into Steveâs. He took the mug much the same way Gareth had, though he blanked his face out a hell of a lot faster.)
âGlowing green goo. Itâs--wait, whereâd that guy go, he explained it really well.â Dustin leaned his entire body out from the couch, looking towards the wall of Hellfire members. âHey, you! Stuck Stewart!â
Grant and Jeff slid away from Stewart immediately.
Who pointedly dumbly towards himself, squawking out a startled, âMe?â
âYes, you.â Dustin said, like this was a fucking gameshow. âTell Hop what you told me.â
As Hopper turned to face them with a startled expression, it became evident that he was just now realizing the teenagers in the kitchen weren't the ones he had expected to encounter.
His gaze swept over them in a clinical assessment, as if memorizing their faces so he could write them up later. Each of them let out a sigh of relief when he moved onto the next person, before his eyes landed on Eddie--and stayed.
âMunson?â He hissed, causing half of Hellfire to flinch.
To Eddieâs credit, he didn't react. Just reclined in the chair like he owned it, and raised the mug of chocolate Steve had just let go of.
âNice jammies, Hop.â He said in lue of a greeting.
âIgnore him.â Dustin demanded, in a tone that had Jeff and Grant both side eyeing him. âThe glowing goo is the important thing here.â
He gestured with his hand in a 'get on with it' motion, shooting an impatient look at Stewart.
Who audibly swallowed.
âSo there uh, there was a rumorâŚâ Stewart started, the story coming out in jerky, hesitant waves.
He kept looking at Hopper as if the man would interrupt him at any minute, and Gareth couldnât tell if he was hoping to be cut off or happy to be allowed to talk.
He got it all out though--the rumors about the goo, the weird trucks and people loitering around town.
How a friend (omitting, Gareth noted with muted amusement, that Mikey was both an adult and the Hideoutâs bartender) put it all together, spun it up into some crazy conspiracy theory and fed it to half the townâs best gossips.
The entire time Stewart spoke, Hopper was staring Eddie down.
Hellfire didnât miss it.
Joyce didnât either, and even Jonathan looked a bit fidgety.
(The kids looked perfectly fine, but then, they didnât seem to realize Hopper wasnât exactly focused on the whole goo thing.)
Stewartâs story ended, tailing off awkwardly when it became clear he had nothing else to add, and that everyone was waiting for Hopper to say something.
âJimâŚâ Joyce started, tone low in warning, which seemed to kickstart the chief back to life.
âRight. So we have one group of dumbass teenagers who went into the lab on a dare,â Hopper drawled, in that âdonât you bullshit meâ tone cops just loved to use, âa second group of dumbass children who went in because they apparently, havenât learned their lesson about meddling in government affairs, and Munson hereâ-â
Hopper flicked a hand at Eddie.
ââ-was involved because his friends called him for help and not because the lab is the perfect spot to get high with a large number of people. Do I have that right?â
They all exchanged a nervous look with one another, but no one said a word.
Hellfire as a whole was used to getting their shit rocked by teachers, shop owners, and occasionally, the cops (usually an idiot who wanted to throw their weight around by busting up band practice or searching a car for drugs).
Pissing off the Chief of police though? That was an activity Eddie typically did solo.
And boy was Hopper pissed off, fury building waves as he leaned in like a predator opening its mouth right before it ate its prey.
âThis shit? The Upside Down, monster shit? Isnât something I screw around with. Especially not when my daughterâs involved. So weâre going to try this again, and this time, I want to hear the truth.â
He held up a hand to halt the explosion of protests from the kids section without bothering to even look in their direction.
âFrom Munson.â He finished, crossing his arms over his chest.
Eddie answered by taking a noisy slurp from his mug.
Gareth winced, but this sort of back and forth was par the course for a Munson-Hopper encounter, and he knew better than to get in the middle of it.
Steve, apparently, did not.
âStewart just told you the truth.â He said flatly, giving Hopper a look that was just as stubborn as the chiefâs own.
Who very much did not appreciate it.
âHarrington--â
âYou said it yourself.â Steve interrupted, holding firm against the chiefâs scowl. âThe Upside Down isnât something we screw around with.â
âTell him, Steve!â Dustin crowed from the couch.
âShut it.â Steve and Hopper responded in unison, and then did a remarkable job of pretending they hadnât said a word.
(Gareth had the worst vision of Steve in an alternate life as a police officer. A deputy maybe, with shaved hair, constantly chewing on tobacco and fucking up poor peopleâs lives. Heâd probably have an obnoxious nickname. Like Gator or some shit.
Thank God Hellfire had gotten there first.)
âI was there when they called Eddie.â Steve continued, before Hopper could growl something out. âIf we were all doing drugs, weâd still be high, and Eddie wouldnât have teeth marks in his thigh.â
There was yet another pause, in which Gareth was fairly sure the tension was going to give him a heart attack.
Within it, Hopper did a double take, noting Eddieâs injury for the first time--and how he only had one pant leg, the other replaced by a stark white bandage and pale skin.
âFine.â He grit out, teeth clenched so tight Gareth thought they might shatter against each other. âIs there anything else I should know about the âgoo storyâ then?â
âYou missed the part where El wouldnât let us call you, because she felt you wouldnât listen to her.â Mike snarked from Elâs right.
âWonder why.â Max added darkly, from her own spot on Elâs left. âDonât you have a walkie? Why didnât you answer the code red?â
Apparently, they had decided Steve had won this entire exchange, and it was safe to dogpile on their own displeasure. Gareth was absolutely astounded that the glare Hopper turned their direction didnât melt them all on the spot.
(Likely, given how this all seemed to be a normal encounter for everyone involved, they were used to it.
Gareth was very much not.)
Hopper whipped his head around to Mike, anger still simmering, âAnd Iâm sure you, Michael Wheeler, didnât have any qualms about not calling me.â
âHe did not want me to go either.â El said bluntly. âI told him you would not listen, and if either of you stopped me, people would die.â
She nodded then, towards Stewart, as if to indicate he was one such person.
For the second time that night, Stewart pointed at his own chest, eyes saucer wide.
âNo one else,â El finished grimly, âwill die.â
The chief dragged his hands through his hair and then down his face.
âAlright.â He forced out. âI get your point-- but! Weâre talking about how you went about this later. Not now!â He added, before the kids could erupt. âLater!â
âSo what are we going to do about the Manticore?â Mike spat the question more so than he said it, but Gareth was happy someone was bringing that part up.
Because monster problem or not--what the fuck were they going to do about it?
Since the Chief of Police was here, did that mean the entire police force knew there were monsters in Hawkins? Was there some kind of--monster hunting squad that went around at night?
The more he thought about it the more questions he had, and in turn, the more Garethâs anxiety threatened to mutiny once again, which was not helped by the concussion he was positive heâd acquired.
Hopper scoffed, âWe are not doing anything. We are going back to bed after I call your parents and tell them youâve been out all night!â
Groans filled the room, the sound of children facing a future grounding, en mass.
âThen,â he continued loudly, âIâll call Owens.â
âAnd if Owens doesnât do anything?â Dustin challenged. ââCause he clearly didnât clean up well last time. Are we just going to let a manticore run around? What if more come through? What if--â
âJust because none of you trust me doesnât mean I donât do my job,â Hopper interrupted, âwhich includes knowing what to do if this shit came back. We adults did discuss that after last time, believe it or not.â
Gareth was old enough to school the doubt off his face, but the kids had no such qualms.
âWhat Hop means is that we need to have a little more faith in him.â Joyce soothed, and Gareth noticed that unlike a lot of adult men heâd been around, Hopper let her. âHeâll make sure itâs taken care of.â
âThis just means weâre waiting until he falls in a hole again.â Mike stage whispered to Will, who coughed hard to hide his laugh.
âThere arenât any holes this time!â Hopper screeched, voice rising in pitch.
âOkay, okay, enough.â Joyce pacified, moving to stand in the middle of the room (notably,between the harpy children and Hopper). âWhatâs important is that everyone lived, we know thereâs a thing in the lab, and that no one is going back for it until itâs dead. Agreed?â
She paused, and when no such agreements came, hardened her voice in a way that had every person under eighteen snapping to attention. âAgreed!?â
âYes.â Chorused the children (and at least three members of Hellfire.)
âGood.â Joyce nodded so hard her hair bounced. Putting her hands on her hips, she added; âNow we start the process of getting all of you home.â
âSomeone get me the phone, weâre starting with you Wheeler.â Hopper tacked on.
Mike just flung himself back into the couch with a dramatic eye roll and a not so subtle raise of his middle finger.
âAs for the rest of you, get out.â Hopper said, weaving past Steve to get to the phone in the kitchen.
A second later, when it was clear no one had moved, he poked his head around the corner.
âDo I need to call all your parents too?â He demanded, as Hellfire dumbly stood there. âGet!â
Hellfire got.
xXx
Hopper grabbed Steve right before heâd left, muttering something about needing to talk to him and Jonathan.
Alone.
Eddie chose to hang back, propping himself on the van's hood, and Gareth, not wanting to go home, opted to keep him company
âHopperâs not going to eat him.â He whispered, when two minutes dragged into seven and the fidgeting got to be too much for him.
âTrue, but he's catching hell because Hopper's not buying his story." Eddie retorted, voice equally hushed.
As if raising their voices might summon Hopper and his fiery temper right to them.
"It's nothing we haven't heard before," Gareth remarked, resisting the urge to suggest once more that Eddie get off his leg and go sit in the car.
âThere weren't monsters before.â Eddie countered, mouth around a hangnail.
âDoesnât matter.â
âIt might.â Eddie muttered darkly. âIf Hopper makes it matter, it fucking might.â
âHow the hell is Hopper going to make it matter?" Gareth mused aloud, though deep down, he already knew.
Eddie was Hellfire's guardian, both within and beyond the school walls. Being with him meant having a shield to hide behind, protection against the casual cruelty the people of Hawkins were so fond of.
Sure, there were mean kids, nasty teachers, and even the occasional unpleasant gas station attendant, but they weren't the real issueânot by a long shot.
It was the ones who looked at Eddie and truly believed some of the bullshit.
Hopper didnât act like the church folk. The ones who sent their pastors and youth leaders out on the warpath, knocking on doors and setting up outside of businesses.
Those individuals had attempted to drive away Eddie's friends before, thinking they could "rescue them" in the processâGareth himself had once endured a week of being stalked by some idiot he had stood up to in Eddie's defense.
The man had made it his mission, and Gareth, too young at the time to know better, had felt helpless as every adult he turned to dismissed the blatant stalking.
All because that "nice" youth leader claimed he just wanted to help.
The asshole had practically hunted Gareth down-- always making himself known, always accompanied by a friend or two. A couple of little comments in his pocket, ready and waiting, and a grin that didnât match his eyes.
The words he said werenât threats, but the tone he said them in was.
Eddie got it worst of all of them though, when the church crowd started.
Their attention wasnât always on him, and truthfully they hadnât really put any real energy into their own bullshit for a few years now--but they always came back to him.
Like he was an old and favored chew toy, and if they just tried hard enough, theyâd crack him in two.
Which meant this wasnât about what Hopper said.
Itâs what he could do.
Thankfully Steve appeared before Eddie could spiral further, looking surprised to see them still waiting.
âOh.â He ran a hand through his hair as he came down the stairs. âYou guys didnât have to stay.â
Eddie shot him a flat look.
"And leave you alone with Hopper?"
"I wasn't exactly alone, but thanks."
Steve's smile was slight, tinged with relief, and Eddie fell right into him, leaning into Steve's space (and making a show of his limp as he did).
âWe were going to ask if youâre coming back with us anyway. Figure you might not want to go back to your place after tonight.â He said, as if he and Gareth had discussed any such thing.
You waited outside just to tell me that?" Steve asked, a hint of amusement in his voice as he gently pushed Eddie back. "Ed, you should be sitting in your car, off that leg."
(Not that Steve wanted Eddie to go far, Gareth noted with his own amusement, as Steve stepped to follow.)
"I tried telling him that, but he wouldn't listen!" He tattled to Steve, simply because he could.
He got a middle finger behind Eddieâs back in retaliation.
âI figured itâd piss Hopper right off if I offered you a place to crash right after he warned you away from me.â Eddie said, ignoring the both of them.
âHe didnât warn me away.â Steve said, beginning the process of herding the older teen into his van.
Eddie let out a snort. "Seriously? That wasn't a full-blown 'rethink your life choices, hanging out with trash like him' speech?â
âYouâre not trash.â
Eddie snorted again, hasher this time before glancing away.
He was entirely unprepared for Steve to reach out, catching him by the arm much the same way Hopper had caught him.
âEddie.â Steve said, abruptly serious. âYouâre not trash.â
He said it like he meant it, voice low, eyes drilling into Eddieâs.
Gareth couldn't tear his own eyes away, even though that stare wasn't even intended for him.
âNo one here is trash,â Steve declared firmly. âHopper was just asking if Jonathan and I could babysit El for a couple of nights while heâs working. But even if he had tried to tell me I couldn't hang out with you, I would have told him to shove it. Like you said earlier todayâwe donât abandon our friends, and we donât leave them to deal with stuff alone.â
Gareth knew his best friend like the back of his hand and that level of honesty?
It was too much for Eddie, and normally, heâd run.
Was in fact, a little more than infamous for bolting when confronted about his own insecurities.
Maybe it was because Eddie's leg was in no shape for him to run, or maybe it was the reassuring grip of Steve's hand on his arm. It could even have been the intensity in Steve's gaze, as if he could convince Eddie of anything just by staring at him--but Eddie didnât move.
He didn't even avert his gaze, although Gareth half expected him to.
âIf you say so.â He tried to sing-song the words but they fell flat. âLetâs go, the Munson couch awaits us.â
Steve didnât say anything about how Eddie pulled himself away, backing out of range.
He watched him though.
Even after Eddie had turned around, waving a hand at Gareth to get into the drivers seat.
Steve kept watching until Gareth nudged him out of it, murmuring a quiet âCome on, dudeâ to get him going too.
Saw the little frown line burrow its way into Steveâs forehead, like heâd figured out part of a puzzle that had long evaded him, and didnât like the answer heâd come too.
(Gareth himself didnât have time for any such revelations, given he faced the monstrous task of driving Eddieâs van.
His learners permit quaked in his wallet at the mere thought, but somehow, they made it back in one piece anyway.)
xXx
Steve had reassured them that feeling restless was normal afterâŚ.
Well.
After.
(There wasnât a word strong enough to capture the intensity of the last few hours.
Gareth eventually stopped trying, accepting it as a blur of horror, anxiety, and impending dread. It felt like a nightmare that others remembered vividly but faded for him, like a movie becoming less real once you left the theater.)
Their conversation centered around going through the last few years, Steve filling in holes that made life make a hell of a lot more sense compared to all the bullshit the government had come up with.
None of it sounded real, and several pieces had Eddie and Gareth both gawking, but after the lab?
Not a part of it could be easily discounted.
Gareth couldnât pinpoint when he finally succumbed to sleep.
Hadnât intended too, and knew immediately upon clawing back to reality that his back was in a world of hurt from the way heâd curled into Wayneâs ancient armchair.
It was still dark outside, the lights warm on the inside of the trailer, and he figured he couldnât have been out for long.
The blurry red 5:05 from his watch confirmed his suspicions, and Gareth got two seconds to wonder if this is his life now--catching whatever sleep he can in weird little bursts-- before harsh whispering picked up to his left.
The Munsonâs living room was small. Small enough for Eddie to know better about how the sound carries, even if he was whisper-fighting.
Or at least, whisper-arguing, anyway.
âI just wish youâd see yourself the way everyone else sees you.â Steve was saying, sounding both bitchy and confused. Like he couldnât quite believe he was having such a stupid conversation, but was going to point out the obvious anyway.
Eddie wasnât doing much better, his words as sharp as the knife heâd used to stab the manticore.
âWhat, as the town freak? The local satanist? The ugly queer who's out to steal the children?â
Gareth managed to sneak a peak in time to see Eddieâs face twisted in disgust.
âNot those assholes--the ones that know you. Everyone that matters.â Steve countered, easily and immediately. âThe Hellfire Club, Wayne, Dustin.â
There was a pause, but he could have sworn he heard Steve follow up with a quiet but hopeful, âMe.â
Gareth twisted ever so slightly, giving himself an eyeful of the room.
Both his friends sat on the couch facing each other. They were close, like theyâd been sharing snacks or body heat before things had gone south, Eddieâs hands nearly missing smacking into Steveâs face as he gestured.
âFor what itâs worth, Iâm sorry.â Steve continued doggedly.
Eddieâs hands froze in air, before he could make whatever gesture heâd intended.
âWhat?â
âI said Iâm sorry.â Steve repeated, that painful sincerity Gareth would have never guessed him capable of on full display. âFor the part I played in calling you all that shit. Youâre none of those things, Eddie. Youâre the opposite of all of it.â
The hands dropped into Eddieâs lap, like twin birds shot out of the sky.
âI am, though.â He muttered.
Steveâs frown deepened, his reassurance quick. âNo, youâre not.â
âYeah, Steve. I am.â
âOkay, fine.â Angry, Steve leaned forward into Eddieâs space.
Backed into the side of the couch and wall as he was, it trapped Eddie quite nicely.
âI know the parents down at the church donât know the difference between D&D and actual demons, but I do. So unless you suddenly learned how to be quiet about fucking ritual sacrifice of all things, then I refuse to buy that youâre a literal Satanist and not just engaging in the drama.â
Gareth saw the moment Eddie realized he was pinned, that he wasnât getting out of his conversation without shoving Steve back.
Knew this was building into a blow up before Eddieâs mouth even opened.
âIâm not a Satanist, but I definitely am queer.â He shot back, eyes hard. âSo you can shove whatever grand ideas youâre having about my character back up your ass.â
Gareth hadnât moved much, years of living with his siblings making it possible to watch whatâs happening without alerting anyone in the room that he was awake, but he almost ruined it with how quickly he sucked in his own breath.
Steve was a good guy.
Had been a good guy to them, but there have been plenty of other âgood guysâ Gareth knew who suddenly werenât so great the second Eddieâs sexuality came up.
Itâs why Gareth himself hadnât often admitted to his own muddled sexuality, too afraid of getting the same bullshit aimed his way.
Why would anyone want to pursue men, after watching more than a few realize they liked Eddie and promptly lose their shit so hard they became a danger to any man who so much as looked at them the wrong way?
It was terrifying--and so was the realization that Gareth canât kick Steveâs ass.Â
He doesnât want to even try, but gets himself ready for emotional upheaval anyway--and whatever may come after.
Even if theyâre all dead on their feet from fighting a literal monster.
âExcellent fucking timing Eds.â He thought sourly, despite the guilt of thinking it. Itâs not Eddieâs fault--and Steveâs reaction, whatever it may be, isnât either.
'God does it suck to be gay in a rural ass, small town.'
Thankfully, Steve doesnât pull away.
Doesnât act like Eddieâs got a contagious disease like some of the basketball team does, or like itâs his God given duty to either rid the earth of him now that Eddieâs finally admitted to what half the town has accused him of being, or have some violent crisis over his own clearly repressed gay crush.Â
Is still very much in Eddieâs space, even if heâs being awfully quiet--for long enough that Gareth can see Eddie start to shut down.
âOkay.â Steve said finally, clearly knowing he needs to say something but seemingly struggling to figure out what, âBut youâre not evil, and youâre definitely not stealing children, so youâre beating out the US government.â
âOh boy, I beat out the government thatâs kidnapping and torturing people! Such a high bar.â
Steve winced. âThatâs not what I meant.â
âYeah? What did you mean then?â Eddie challenged. âWe both know youâre not the kind to want to associate with the queers.â
âI didn't, I--â Steve took a breath, fumbling and knowing it. âI know I've been an asshole in the past, and I also know I was wrong."
He stared hard at Eddie. "I donât care if youâre gay. That doesnât, that shouldnât--matter.â
Eddie met his gaze.Â
âI donât believe you.âÂ
Between them sat all the times Steve, or a former friend of his, decided a random victim was queer. The knowing smirks and taunts that followed after they spewed out various slurs.
How some of the rumors they started stuck around.Â
Steve had never really engaged with a lot of the bullying people often attributed to him as King of the Jockstraps, but he wasn't an innocent bystander either, and Gareth couldn't fault Eddie for challenging that change of heart.Â
Even now, after Steve had long vacated his throne.Â
âWell that sucks for you then, doesnât it?â Steve snapped. âBecause Iâm not going anywhere, Munson. You can mack on some dude all you like, and Iâm still going to be there to remind you youâre not evil for doing it. Or for being into nerdy shit and terrible music!â
âMy music isnât terrible!â Eddie screeched automatically.
Gareth anticipated Eddie calling out Steve on his obvious baitâseriously, that wouldnât have worked in a game even with a nat 20âbut found himself underestimating Steve's bantering skills as their ex-jock just plowed right ahead.
âIt is! Itâs just--screaming. Screaming with loud ass guitars!â
âOh my God, I am going to sit you down and make you listen to so many albums. The screaming is a core part of the range of emotions in the songs--â
âRange? Eddie there isnât any range, itâs just dudes who are angry--â
âFuck you, it is not!â Eddie was howling, both of them too into their argument to remember they were trying to be quiet to begin with.
âI bet you five dollars! Five entire dollars, that you could not find me a singular song I like out of your entire metal collection.â
âTen dollars! And the largest Pizza this shithole town has to offer!â
âDeal!â Steve shouted, chest heaving.
They breathed together for a moment, before the tension between them fizzled out, fading into something more uncertain.
Delicate, even though Gareth was fairly certain Steve had expertly maneuvered Eddie right where he wanted him.
Eddie seemed to realize it too, folding back into himself as he tugged a finger around his hair, pulling it in front of his face.
âYou really wouldn't care if I kissed a guy in front of you?â Eddie's question isn't overtly vulnerable, but Gareth knows better.
He understands the significance of this.
Of Steveâs acceptance, more than anyone else's.
The jock had become so deeply bonded to themâall of themâthat the rejection would wound Eddie in a way few could truly understand. Crack his otherwise impenetrable shield, the ricochet tearing through a substantial portion of his resilience.
âAnd I'd probably tell you to find a room, but hey, I said that to Tommy and Carol too,â Steve retorts, nudging Eddie's thigh.
Eddie rewards him with a small smile
Steve seems to know more is needed, and offers it up right alongside his heart. âIâm serious. I know I kinda butchered it but--the queer thing shouldnât be a problem to begin with. Itâs stupid that it is.â
"Steven Harrington, did I just witness personal growth?" Eddie teased, his smile widening. "What's next, admitting that college sports are ridiculous?"
âDonât be a dick,â Steve scoffed, but his own smile mirrored Eddieâs as he looked away.Â
Despite his head still partly tucked into his arm, Gareth found himself grinning.
It was a welcome relief after an otherwise horrific night.
Sensing it was now or never, Gareth made a show of untangling himself, stretching upward with a moan that startled both Eddie and Steve.
âBe careful saying that shit, Steve,â He said, jerking a thumb towards his best friend. âHeâll take it as an invitation to make out with people in front of you.â
Eddie gasped, hand flying over his heart in mock offense.
âI would never!â
âHeâs a real horndog, once he even tried to make out with a guy on stage on top of my drumset.â Gareth continued, sticking out his tongue.
He deserved the pillow thrown his way but Gareth took the hit with grace, laughing as Eddie huffed at him.
âFor the last time I wasnât making out with that guy, he was trying to punch me!â
âWith his mouth?â
âWith his head, which you damn well know."Â Eddie accused, clawing blindly for another pillow. "Gareth you are shameless, how long have you been listening in!?â
âAs much as I enjoy the calming effects of mindless screaming, I'd wager it was when you guys conveniently forgot I was in the room."
âI take it you uh, know?â Steve injected hesitantly, eyes moving between Eddie and Gareth and oh--oh, he was being protective.
'Thatâs cute.'Â Gareth thinks.
Even if heâs rolling his eyes at the very idea that he posses any kind of threat.
âDude, I clocked Eddie before he clocked me.â He said, just to take some heat from Eddie--and because it was one of the few opportunities where he could say it. âWeâve spent many a math period discussing if Sting was hotter than Axl Rose.â
If Eddie can be brave, Gareth could too.
âYou did not.â Eddie spits back, the offense mounting. âYou absolutely did not clock me first you lying liar--â
âOh.â Steve blinked, finger flicking out between them as if heâs connected two dots and feels awfully stupid about not seeing it before. âI uh, I didnât, are you guys--â
And oh, the horror that crashes into Gareth when he figured out what Steve was asking.
âNo! God no.â Gareth shuddered, delighting in the way Eddieâs jaw crashed down at the sight. âAnd if I ever consider it, I need you to take me out back and shoot me, Steve. Right between the eyes, for the greater good.â
âWow Gary, just stick a knife in my back why donât you--â
âIâm gonna be real,â Steve cut in, before they could fake-argue their way into a real fight, âI never actually thought about liking both. Guys and girls, I mean.â
He blushed, as both Gareth and Eddie turned to look at him.
âOh Stevie,â Eddie cooed, âthere are so many more options than just "liking both.â
He made air quotes with his fingers, attention immediately diverted away from murdering Gareth with whatever objects he could grab.Â
Steve gave him a side eye that was more than well deserved.
âI feel like I donât want to know.â He said flatly.
âToo late.â Gareth told him, resigned. âYou get to hear the speech now.â
âThereâs a speech?â
âSteve, it's me. Of course thereâs a speech.â Eddie tutted, resettling himself on the couch so that heâs sitting cross legged. âItâs an hour long so strap yourself in big guy, we have a lot of ground to cover!â
Crisis firmly averted, Gareth curls back up in the chair, tired smile on his face as Steve and Eddie go right back to bantering, the tension having vanished from the room.
This is a rare outcome, given their life and the world they live in, but one Garethâs incredibly thankful for.
Canât quite believe it, but then, King Steve had surprised a lot of them ever since heâd hung up his crown.
Perhaps Hellfire was a good influence on people after all.
xXx
Bonus
Back at the Byers, outside on the front porch, Hopper and Joyce were arguing over a cigarette.
(They both believe theyâre being very quiet about it, but the pillow Jonathan had jammed over his ears said otherwise.)
âRemind me to make you work on your approach with disciplining children.â Joyce was saying, as she snatched the cigarette out of Hopperâs hands.
âWhat?! I thought that went pretty well considering they broke back into the lab and almost killed themselves.â He responded, waiting until sheâd taken a deep inhale before trying to get it back.
âAnd Iâm sure taking potshots at the poorest kid in the room was a necessary part of that process. Itâs probably written down in the police handbook, even.â
âI wasnât taking potshots Joyce--â
âNo, of course not, you were just throwing random criticism and assumptions around, willy nilly and--oh, wait, thatâs the exact definition of a potshot--â
âHe deals drugs! Look me in the eyes and tell me Munson doling out weed doesnât make more sense then the lot of them chasing down some--some goo story!?â
Thereâs a weighty pause, in which one can only imagine Joyce Byers face says more words than her mouth ever could.
It was very impactful.
âI mean--okay, maybe not our kids, but the teenagers?â Hopperâs voice dives into a disbelieving kind of whine, reserved for those who are aware the point theyâre arguing may in fact, be wrong, but are desperately defending it anyway. âCome on. Drugs is the clear answer!"Â
âEven if that was what was happening, then you shouldnât be discussing it in a room full of children who have survived what those kids have, Jim. It could have been a separate conversation, given in a much calmer and less threatening tone of voice.â
âOh my God, Joyce--â
âDonât you âoh my God!â me, you asked for lessons on being a better parent and I am holding you to them!â
Thereâs a brief scuffle over the cigarette, as both seem to realize Joyce is letting it smoke out in her hand.
She does not stop talking however, even as their hands slap at each other.Â
âThat includes parenting the teenagers in this town, because in case you havenât noticed, youâre the Chief of police! So you signed up to see them all at their worst, and you get to deal with the fallout of that!â
âFine! Fine. Iâll apologize to the goddamn high school drug dealer. Is that what you want!?â
âYes!â
Another pause, this one filled with that awkward sort of tension when an argument has fizzled out, and neither party knows quite where they stand with each other yet.
âWhat voice am I supposed to use?â Hopper mused, finally winning the bid for the cigarette and jamming it into his mouth.
âAnyone except the grumbly bear voice.â
âThe grumbly bear voice?â
âYou know,â Joyce drops her own voice in a comical rendition of Hopperâs, âHow dare you kids run off! Youâll be the death of me and this town!â
She laughs, and Hopper, shockingly, laughs along with her.
âI donât sound like that.â He defends, bumping Joyce gently with his shoulder, and she in return, bumps him right back.
Both of them grinning, both of them blushing a little.
They keep talking, the cigarette eventually put aside and forgotten as they do.
Truth be told, they hadnât needed it--but the excuse was nice.
(Inside, Jonathan rolled the pillow on top of his face in a suffocation attempt, unsure of what heâd done in life to deserve all this but desperately wishing he didnât have to listen to his mother flirt.
Or worse--Hop flirting back.)

The Vanishing of Will Byers (Part 2 of 2)
Synopsis: Following the Battle of Starcourt, Dustin attempts to adjust to life in high school as he deals with the fallout of being targeted by bullies and his friends growing distant. When he learns of a science fair taking place in Indianapolis, Dustin enlists the help of Eddie Munson to get the project off the ground as he begins to consider his future.............
Observations:
I ended up reading this book twice, prior to the 2024 Election. First time was difficult to get through due to a slow beginning and my mixed feelings about the last 4-5 pages. Rereading it a second time and thinking things through was a more positive experience, and I ended up having a lot of fun with the story, especially when it came to Dustin's science project and his personal adventure at the science fair.
In terms of how I'd rank it, I'd say it's definitely better than last year's Flight of Icarus, and even a cut above Lucas on the Line due to not having continuity errors. However, it's not quite to the level of Rebel Robin or my Top 5 best tie-ins in the series. There were issues with it, but the book does a good job sticking after you've finished it, and what it presents does make me excited for the direction they could go with Dustin in season 5.
I'll start with the parts I took issue with, and work my way up to the positives that made the book worth reading:
Part 1: Bullying (i.e. The First 3rd of the Book)
Those who have followed my blog know I don't have any patience for bullies. In fact, when it comes to Stranger Things and the themes it explores, I have a harder time watching scenes with characters like Troy, James, Tommy, Carol, Billy, Jason, Angela, the Rink-O-Mania crowd, and Two, in comparison with the horror aspects like the Upside Down, the Mind Flayer, and Vecna. A lot of it has to do with how the bullying is uncomfortably grounded in reality, as well as a lifetime of experience on my end dealing with people like this (both on social media and off it). The last year alone especially has been eye-opening with how shamelessly vile and hypocritical some people will be, especially if they think they can get away with it. It's gotten to the point I'm not hesitant anymore about blocking people, or dragging them over the coals if they continue to poke the bear one too many times. At some point, you either develop tougher skin and a "No patience for bullshit" attitude, or you continue to be a target and a dormant for these people. I chose the former.
Having read Lucas on the Line beforehand, I knew that a story focusing on Dustin between seasons 3 and 4 was bound to focus on him and Mike getting bullied, and wasn't surprised when they depicted it in all of its ugliness:
I'll be honest in admitting I never liked Jason as a character. When I first saw season 4, I pegged him immediately as self-absorbed and coasting on self-righteousness and arrogance (even before Chrissy got brutally murdered), and the way things played out did NOTHING to alter that perception. While I initially felt bad for him over the grief and anger of losing Chrissy, that immediately vanished the moment he whipped the townsfolk into conducting a witch hunt against the Hellfire Club without giving a damn about whether innocent people would be hurt in the process (which they were).
Since the release of Season 4, and the subsequent tie-ins that have accompanied it, my opinion of Jason has NOT improved, especially with how this book, Lucas on the Line, and Flight of Icarus depict him as a bully with his own prejudices and anger issues that would lead him to look for any excuse to pick fights with people he didn't like.
I would go as far to argue that Chrissy's death didn't turn him into a monster so much as it brought out the nastier aspects of his character that were already there to begin with. This dude was a timebomb waiting to detonate, and even if Chrissy hadn't died, something was eventually bound to set him off.
On top of that, Jason's treatment of Mike in this book is pretty awful, and only made him more detestable. It also makes his not-so-subtle threat to Nancy in "Papa" about going after Mike a lot more heinous in hindsight:
The book helps flesh-out Mike and Dustin's irritation with Lucas wanting to join the basketball team and why they have a problem with it. It also give context into why they believed Lucas was deluding himself when he claimed this would allow him, Mike, and Dustin to become popular in High School and therefore untouchable to bullies: That was ALWAYS a fantasy that was never going to happen. Jason and his squad were repeatedly awful to Mike and Dustin during their first year of high school, and no amount of Lucas kissing up to Jason was going to change that. Their frustration with Lucas was less about him wanting to play basketball (though neither of them show much enthusiasm for the sport to begin with) and more about wanting Lucas to wake up and realize how much of an asshole Jason and his buddies are.
I've seen fans criticize Mike and Dustin in the season 4 premiere for skipping Lucas's championship game to do Eddie's D&D campaign, and while I initially could understand that position, having time to reevaluate has made me realize they probably made the right call in hindsight. For all of his flaws, Eddie accepted Mike and Dustin and gave them sanctuary within the Hellfire Club, which made their lives in high school bearable. He even offered that same courtesy to Lucas in spite of Lucas also doing basketball (something that Jason had no intention of ever doing for Mike or Dustin while they were a part of Hellfire Club). Whatever acceptance Jason initially gave Lucas (which arguably had a lot to do with Lucas making the winning shot in the championship compared to if Lucas had messed up and cost them the game) came with strings attached. The moment Lucas crossed Jason is the moment he would become Jason's enemy, regardless of the reasons.
All of this makes me indifferent towards Jason's eventual fate. I'm not going to say I was glad he died, but at the same time, my sympathy was nonexistent by the time he bit the dust. Some people might call what happened to him Karmic Overkill, but Stranger Things has always made a point in demonstrating that karma doesn't distribute itself how you want it to. Decent characters like Barbara, Chrissy, Benny, Bob, and Eddie all suffered horrific fates they didn't deserve, whereas awful people like Troy, Tommy, Carol, Colonel Sullivan, Dr. Brenner, and Angela were lucky if they got any sort of comeuppance. Hell, Angela is one of the most loathsome characters in the entire series, and the best she received for her sadism and public humiliation of El was a Grade 2 concussion as opposed to the grisly death she arguably deserved.
Hell, I would go as far as to argue everyone in Rink-O-Mania who took part in El's bullying deserved a gruesome end a la Stephen King's Carrie, but I don't get to make that decision, and neither did El. They're all disgusting people devoid of any redeeming qualities, and I won't feel bad when they're eventually on the receiving end of the cruelty they've dished out (especially since none of them have the self-awareness to recognize how mean-spirited they are), but the cold hard reality is people like Angela and her ilk get away with that kind of behavior in real life (as we just saw a few weeks ago with the 2024 U.S. Elections). Characters like Angela and Jason getting any sort of consequences for their behavior, even if it's small, is cathartic for me, and that's not something I'm going to apologize for.
I will say that, for all the bullying Dustin experiences in this book, he handles it in a mature manner. A lot of this has to do with Dustin having life experience dealing with this kind of crap, and recognizing how pathetic and unoriginal it is:
Out of all the characters in the Party, Dustin is the one who adapts well to his environment, and it's a big reason he's been able to survive the hardships life throws at him. It's something I admire about his character.
Part 2: Dustin's Friendships/Relationships
Adding on what I previously said, it's notable Dustin is the one who makes friends the easiest. He may have come late to the Party (around 4th grade, according to him), but he was able to integrate seamlessly with Mike, Lucas, and Will, which is something the comic Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons depicts:
A good chunk of this has to do with Dustin working to find common ground with people and seeing the positive merits in others. It's how he developed his friendship with Steve and looks up to him in a big-brotherly way. It's how he formed a bond with Eddie in this novel. It's even how he's able to reach across the isle towards people like Ankia (who initially has a haughty attitude towards Dustin before she mellows out), or Danny, or Suzie, or the kids at Science Camp as depicted in that comic:
It's a good life skill that will serve him well when (and if) he leaves Hawkins alive.
A central focus in this book is Dustin reevaluating what he wants in his life, as well as how he views his relationships. Since the events of the Battle of Starcourt, the Party has split, and Dustin feels he's been left to fend for himself. In many ways, the structure of the story echos what Lucas went through in Lucas on the Line, except in this instance, it's Dustin aiming to try out something new in order to deal with the changes in his life. While Lucas veered into basketball, Dustin decided to put his intellect to use by entering a science contest. Unfortunately for him, neither of his friends express much interest in his passion: Max is depressed and isolated following Billy's death and Neil leaving her mom, Mike has shut himself away following Will and El's departure from Hawkins, and Lucas is in basketball training and hanging out with Jason's jock friends, which causes friction between Dustin and Lucas. The most support he gets for the project is from his mother and Eddie.
Speaking of Eddie, his introduction doesn't disappoint. Just like in Flight of Icarus, Eddie is someone who's moved past caring how others think of him (something Dustin respects him for), has no issue publicly calling out Jason and his jocks for their bullying, and is quick to adopt Mike and Dustin into the Hellfire Club (and later Lucas as well). Dustin's desire to impress Eddie, first by fixing his walkman and later his AMP box, is what inspires Dustin's science project: A Super AMP box of his own that would allow Dustin to record sounds, play them back, and measure changes in distortion and signal-to-noise ratios. With some encouragement from Eddie (as well as a promise for a drive to the fair and an arrangement to listen to Eddie's playlist of Heavy Metal music), Dustin heads out on his own side-quest (as he cheekily puts it).
The friendship between Dustin and Eddie is a highlight, and Eddie's attempts at helping Dustin are hilarious as well as heartwarming. Eddie is someone who likes Dustin for who he is, and encourages him to not let others tell him who he should be:
In many ways, Eddie reminds me of Jay from Lucas on the Line who also acted like a mentor figure/friend to Lucas, and motivated Lucas to be his true self.
The tragedy is, in spite of both Jay and Eddie being positive influences for Lucas and Dustin, both of them were cruelly driven out: Jay was forced to move after being targeted in a racist attack against him, whereas Eddie got scapegoated for Chrissy's death and died before he got to clear his name. It's a parallel that reminds me of Karen's words to Nancy in season 3: "This world, it beats you up again and again until eventually........most people, they just stop trying." Both Dustin and Lucas have always been fighters (same with the other members of the Party), but it doesn't make it any easier that the people they care about disappear from their lives when they're at their most vulnerable.
Speaking of vulnerable, part of the conflict Dustin has with his friends is also similar to Lucas's conflict in Lucas on the Line where both characters are going through their own hardships and assessing whether their friends will actually be there for them. Dustin does clash heads with Lucas over basketball, but a good chunk of that has to do with the crowd Lucas is hanging out with. Dustin knows Jason and his jocks are NOT nice people, and is baffled over why Lucas would want to be someone like that:
It takes some time, and a few missteps, but Dustin is able to eventually not only see Lucas's perspective, but also Mike's perspective regarding his issues, and make amends with both of them before things permanently fall apart:
This isn't much of a spoiler since the group is united again at the end of season 4, but the suspense leading up to that point comes from HOW they're able to keep their friendship together in spite of life's tribulations. There's a moving scene at the Video Rental Store where Robin and Steve hold an intervention to get Mike, Dustin, and Lucas to reconcile. During it, each find out that, despite the surface differences, their fears are similar in nature: Behind Left Behind. Losing friends. Failing the people they care about. Their bond is a lot stronger than they give it credit for. And as Steve notes, a lot of the problems they're having are manageable if they're willing to talk through it:
Speaking of Steve, it was nice seeing the book cover his relationship with Dustin. Just like in season 2, Steve takes on the role of mentor as Dustin keeps barging into his workplace (oftentimes before Steve closes, or else scaring off customers in the process) to vent about his issues. Steve, of course, takes it in stride, and offers what advice he can (along with the new video releases that Dustin is interested in).
I was initially worried this book would feature petty jealousy and contrived drama between Steve and Eddie over which of them Dustin liked the best as a friend (similar to what the show Supernatural did with Sam and Dean Winchester in Season 8 when they introduced the vampire character Benny and tried to play him as the new "brother" that Dean wanted over Sam). Thankfully, the book steers clear of that. We get brief glimpses that Steve is insecure that Dustin has started to lose interest in him as a friend (something that Dustin refutes in the narration), but Steve never becomes actively malicious against Eddie or tries to prevent Dustin from seeing Eddie (which is in direct contrast to how the Benny/Dean/Sam drama played out in Supernatural). The regrettable thing is that, had Steve and Eddie talked beforehand (similar to how Steve was encouraging Dustin to talk to Mike and Lucas before making any rash decisions), they could have become friends a lot earlier before season 4. đ
Suzie also makes an appearance, and just like with Steve, she acts as an encouraging presence and voice of reason for Dustin as he's navigating high school. Their interactions are sweet without being over-the-top, and they even run a book club where they discuss novels they're reading together. In fact, compared to Mike and El's stilted communication while they're apart in different states, Dustin and Suzie are a lot more open with each other about what's going on in their lives (minus anything to do with the Upside Down). It makes their relationship look healthy in comparison.
I know people see Suzie as a "take-or-leave" character, but I like her, and I'm glad Dustin and her are a couple. I'm not sure what the future holds for them, but I hope she is eventually clued in to the Upside Down. I'm also hoping we get to see her interact with other characters besides Dustin (like she did with Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle in season 4) and maybe even have some kind of role in helping Dustin against Vecna's army. Who knows? Her intelligence and love for fantasy could be put to good use in that situation.
We also see a little more of Dustin's friendship with Will in how they keep in touch via letters. It's a relationship that remains solid, with a nice balance between Dustin's intellectual side and Will's perceptiveness. Will encourages Dustin with his science project, and gives advice to Dustin regarding his difficulties with Mike and Lucas, as well as what he should do with his future:
There is something to be said about Dustin and Will being the glue that holds the Party together. Considering that Dustin is able to talk about his problems easier with Will in letters than he's able to with Mike or Lucas, it gives the impression that, out of all the members of the Party, Dustin is able to relate better to Will. Or maybe it's because it's easier for Will to speak openly about his thoughts and emotions, compared to Lucas and Mike who struggle more.
Dustin's interactions with Max and El are shown briefly, but aren't given the same in-depth look as his other relationships. Dustin is aware of Max's depression and living situation (and later finds out she broke up with Lucas) and does what he can in offering to be there for her. As for El, while he doesn't know the particulars, he picks up pretty quickly that El is unhappy in Lenora for reasons that are obvious to the audience (May Angela continue to get hit in the face with a heavy object every day for the rest of her miserable life). đ
Finally, there's Dustin's relationship with his parents. The few interactions I've seen between Ms. Henderson and Dustin have always given the impression they're close and that they do a good job supporting one another, and this book confirms that. She knows that her son is a genius and allows him to nurture his creativity and scientific interests (even as she's having to call the power company multiple times since Dustin uses up the electricity in the house). I like their mother/son relationship, and I'm disappointed she's not coming back for season 5.
As for Mr. Henderson..............Dustin sums it up best to Eddie:
This is pretty consistent with how Walter Henderson was depicted in The First Shadow, and I'm glad the book includes this nod to the play.
Part 3: The Science Fair
The middle part of the book, which deals with Dustin building his "Bard Box" (i.e. the AMP box he uses to record sounds) and his adventure with Eddie in Indianapolis, was my favorite part. Not only does it feature great bonding moments between Dustin and Eddie (including the hilarious revelation that Eddie has a fear of ducks), but there's a fun mystery Dustin stumbles upon while he's at the fair that allows him to put his deductive skills to work. It's a plot with similarities to the comic Science Camp in that Dustin meets a group of nerds like him whom he befriends and they work to track down a culprit with malicious intentions.
Just like with Science Camp, I won't reveal the particulars or who the culprit is, but it was pretty easy to figure out the culprit's identity. However, the journey with Dustin and the new friends he makes is enjoyable, and I wouldn't mind seeing those characters again in a future tie-in. There's also a fun bit with Eddie having to look after a duck named Frodo Quackins (yes, that's actually his name) and his ability to improvise and entertain people:
If Eddie had survived, he could have had a career in theater, and he would have been good in it. đ
All of this leads up to a moment where Dustin is offered the opportunity to escape Hawkins and attend a prestigious science school called Eastwood. And the remainder of the book deals with Dustin struggling over whether to accept the offer or not.
Based on how season 4 went, you can already guess how that panned out.
And this brings me to where Dustin's story goes from here......
Part 4: Dustin's Future in Season 5
I've speculated for a while that, just like with Nancy's crusade to get justice for Barbara in season 2, Dustin will be trying to clear Eddie's name in season 5 for Vecna's murders. Based on the BTS photos they've released, it looks like there's a long road ahead for him:
I'm hoping there's a major payoff to this potential arc beyond just clearing Eddie's name. Part of the reason I brought up bullies like Jason and Angela earlier in this review is because I've started to grow sick of seeing the main characters repeatedly getting dumped on while receiving zero credit for putting their lives on the line to save the world. Meanwhile, assholes like Angela and Jason make the main characters lives a living hell, all the while enabled by the people around them, and are either coddled for their behavior (Angela) or memorialized for it (Jason). While I doubt Angela or any characters from Lenora (including Argyle) are coming back for season 5 (though if she does return for some reason, I hope Vecna causes Angela's head to explode), I have a sick feeling that Jason's hold over Hawkins will still be there by season 5, and characters like Dustin will be dealing with the fallout of Jason's crusade. Whether it's in the form of Jason's basketball team taking revenge for their fallen comrade, or Hawkins residents swallowing the propaganda about the Hellfire Club being a Satanic Cult, I expect life isn't going to be easy for a while. That's not even getting into how Dustin will still be grieving Eddie's death and having to put up with the slander thrown Eddie's way.
What I'm hoping for is that, during all of this, there is an eventual reckoning for Hawkins. That the residents are forced to come face-to-face with the lies, the bigotry, the prejudices, the bullying, and all the uglier aspects rooted in the town's social structures and history. I'm not going to be happy if the townsfolk remain passive while reacting to the horrors around them as the main characters are forced to do the heavy lifting in keeping Hawkins safe. We've seen that for 4 seasons now. It's old and tired. The status quo needs to be broken in a major way that forces changes in Hawkins which will actually stick. The show has hinted in season 4 that it could go in this direction, especially with Vecna destroying the town and opening a large gate, and I'm hoping season 5 makes the most of it.
There are plenty of stories out there that have done this. J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings did this with the Scourging of the Shire where the Hobbits had their lands decimated by Saruman and his men, and were forced to take up arms and become self-reliant in fighting back and no longer remaining isolated from the world around them. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood also did something similar where the main characters were forced into a reckoning with how the nation of Amestris was formed, as well as the corruption rooted in its government, and make hard but necessary changes that would bring peace to the world and allow for a better future. That is the kind of arc I hope Stranger Things explores with Hawkins in the last season. Not just having the main characters receive credit for defeating Vecna and the Upside Down, but actually having the residents of Hawkins play a role in that and go through a permanent change in the process.
As for Dustin.........if he survives the events of season 5, I hope he gets the opportunity to leave Hawkins and pursue his scientific interests in a way that makes him happy and allows him to keep in contact with his friends and family. He deserves that much.

Tiger Club (part 2)
Steddie || ~1.6k words || rating: M || tags: single-dad steve harrington, teacher eddie munson, teacher chrissy cunningham, eddie and chrissy are best friends, steve harrington is dustin and max's dad, dustin and max are twins, meet cute, humor and fluff
Part 1 || Part 2 (you are here!) || Part 3 || ao3
~~~
Weeks go by, and Eddie always seems to miss Steveâs pick up days. Chrissyâs only seen him a few times, but both her and Eddie have been privileged with the presence of almost every other adult family member in the twinsâ lives.
Aunt Robin picks them up most days. She always feigns exasperation at Dustinâs boundless energy and Maxâs sassy jokes, but laughs every time they tackle her to the ground. Eddie was surprised to find out she actually lives with the kids and their mysterious father. He considered asking her more about the situation, but decided it wasnât his business.Â
However, he did find out from Chrissy that Robin and Steve went to the same high school but ran in different crowds. The two reconnected working at Hawkins Hospital, Robin as an interpreter and Steve as a paramedic. They bonded over a particularly difficult patient whoâd come in through Emergency and didnât want someone like Robin working with him, not realizingâ as Robin had jokedâ that Steve was someone like Robin too.Â
The more Eddie learns about the duo, the more it reminds him of his relationship with Chrissy. Itâs at least a small comfort to know theyâre not alone in this backwards town.
Aunt Nancy and Uncle Jonathan are the next most frequent visitors. He learned Nancy is a journalist at the Hawkins Post, but is looking to get hired working remotely at a bigger paper like The Chicago Times or Indianapolis Journal. Jonathan is a free-lance photographer, sometimes working for Nancy or the Post, but mostly shoots weddings and family photos. They seem nice enough, although he once caught Jonathan checking him out in the same way Robin had, glancing between Eddie and his own wife with a smirk on his face.Â
The nerve of these people checking him out, leaving him flushed and spluttering when they arenât even interested.
Hell, he even got to meet Dustin and Maxâs grandparents before meeting their mysterious and elusive dad.
âMunson,â Jim Hopper, Hawkins Chief of Police, the twinsâ adopted grandfather, scowled at him. He looked about the same as the last time Eddie had seen him, maybe a few more greys in his mustache and lines around his eyes. Easier to see the fine details when Eddieâs not cuffed in the backseat making faces at him in the rearview mirror.
Jesus Christ, is he lucky Hopper only ever brought him back home to Wayne for dealing instead of throwing him in a jail cell for the weekend. Eddie was twenty the last time the Chief picked him up, almost a decade ago now. He practically tossed Eddie in the backseat, drove them both out to the quarry, sat him down, handed him a beer, and explained in fine detail the differences between being a juvenile delinquent and an actual felon. Needless to say Eddie quit dealing and decided his calling was more educational.
âOh Hop, leave the poor boy alone.â The small woman next to them playfully back-hands the Chiefâs beer belly to get him to back off. âIâm Joyce, the kidsâ grandma. And you must be Mr. Munson! Weâve heard so much about you.â
âNice to meet you, Mrs. Hopper,â he says, unsure of how to navigate this extremely awkward interaction. The Chiefâs stern glare hasnât left Eddieâs face since he stepped out of the car. âI, uhh, wasnât aware that you had family, Chief?â
The man grunts, but uncrosses his arms, shoving one hand in his front pocket and wrapping the other around his wife. âSteveâs not my son, but Iâve been looking after that boy since I picked him up for his first speeding ticket. Just a few years before the kids, back when he was dating Nancy.â
âWait, wait, wait a second,â Eddie interrupts, shocked âNancy, as in Auntie Nancy and Uncle Jonathan?â
âJonathanâs my boy,â Joyce answers Eddieâs slack-jawed confusion. âNancy and Jonathan met just after her and Steve broke up, but theyâre all still good friends, obviously.â
âYeah, obviously.â Eddie zones out a bit, trying to connect the dots in the tangled web of Max and Dustin Harringtonâs family life. âWait, wouldnât that make Steve my age? And if you raised himââ he points to Hopper accusinglyâ âthen that means he went to school here. With me. So why donât I know him?â
But Hopperâs already shaking his head. âKid went to the private school two towns over. Parents have an estate on the opposite side of town from Forest Hills, just barely inside my jurisdiction. Iâm not surprised you two didnât cross paths, he was only ever here for sports, whichââ he gestures at Eddieâs everything, and yeah, Eddie gets it. But an estate?
This is the most information heâs been able to dig up so far. He looks back to the playground where Chrissy is still trying to rally the twinsâ spilled bags. Itâs an opportunity Eddie refuses to pass on.
âAnd the twins?â He turns back and just catches the end of a silent conversation between the couple, eyeing each other while glancing at Eddie. They stop when they notice him watching, and Hop sighs.
âDustin and Max came around just after his senior year. The kid was set up for a full-ride to Indy on a swim scholarship his dad paid for. The mom was a girl he met at a party, and he didnât see her again until she dropped them off on his doorstep. Parents kicked him out, then I took them in. Same week I picked you up for the last time,â Hop adds on with a laugh, like this entire conversation is chock full of cosmic coincidence. âWhat a hell of a week.â
Eddie tumbles the new information in his head over and over throughout the next few days. He feels himself growing bitter that someone like Steve Harrington exists. Someone who sounds too good to be true. Fake, like the many charming princes and noble knights heâs woven into his campaigns over the years. Except itâs hard to deny when itâs not just the kids, and Auntie Robin, Uncle Jonathan and Aunt Nancy, or hell, even the grandparents.Â
Itâs Chrissy. Every time Chrissy gets to talk to Steve, she raves about him until Eddie starts fake gagging just to get her to stop. She typically rolls her eyes, but heâs sick of hearing about how great this guy is and at this point, heâs not even sure if he wants to meet him. No oneâs this great.
âDonât you think itâs weird,â Eddie rants, like he has been for the past ten minutes, âthat he canât even be bothered to pick up his own children? And itâs like youâve said, Chris, even when he does pick them up heâs always late! What kind of father is that, really?â
Heâs halfway through his second margarita, and heâs lost track of the conversation entirely, not sure how they transitioned from Chrissyâs hinge matches to Steve fucking Harrington. Again.
Chrissy frowns at him, and yeah, he mightâve went a bit too far there. Maybe heâs a little sensitive about topics revolving around bad dads.
âJust because youâre hungry doesnât mean you get to be a dick, Eddie,â she shoots back, pushing the basket of chips closer to him as they wait for their food. âItâs not my fault you decided to switch to detention yesterday and missed him because you were cold. I told you it was going to be chilly out and you still didnât wear a jacket.â
âI was wearing a jacket, Chris,â he pouts.
âAn actual, warm jacket. Not that threadbare, leather monstrosity you got from Goodwill for ten dollars. Just because you cover the holes with patches doesnât mean the holes arenât there.âÂ
He lets out an undignified shriek, but she continues on to the actual conversation, used to ignoring his dramatics. âYou know itâs not the same as with your dad, or mine. Steve really is a great guy, even if you refuse to admit it. I think youâre just jealous you havenât met him yet.â
âOf course I want to meet him,â he snaps back, but Chrissy just grins in response. âI have to listen to everyone talk about how great he is, and Iâm just supposed to believe it all on face-value? Honestly, Iâm sick of hearing about him, and if we keep talking about this itâs gonna ruin my buzz.â
Eddie refuses to believe a former trust-fund kid who hosted parties at his estate just to act like a fuck-boy actually leveled up to become a loving single father whoâs adored by his family and friends, saves literal lives every day, and is one of the only queer people in this god forsaken town.Â
Not that he spends his free time thinking about a random guy heâs gathered enough general information on to build a well-rounded NPC. A disowned nobleman cast out from his kingdom into squalor. With the help of the lonely princeâs new found family, he redeems himself by serving as Hawkinsâ most beloved Paladin.Â
Again, not that heâs actually building this character for next yearâs campaign or anything, it just goes to show how much people wonât stop bragging about this guy, and Eddieâs over it.
âYouâd really like him,â Chrissy says, putting an end to his stewing. Sheâs smiling like maybe she knows something he doesnât, and it reminds him of the same smiles heâs gotten from Robin and Nanna Joyce.
âYeah, well Iâd actually have to meet him to like him.â
Could I request a Vance Hopper x Male reader (boyfriends)? Plays a few months after Vance got kidnapped. The reader gets kidnapped too (and gives the grabber a really hard time because he doesnât back down) and Vance ghost uses the chance to properly say goodbye to his boyfriend and helps him to get out of there. A lot of angst and heartbreak (the readers usually a tough guy too and doesnât show much emotion but completely breaks down in the basement after Vance called him the first time) the grabber could show him the spot where he killed Vance to mock him idk make it hurt đđđI hope you have a great day and thank you!! <3
Sorry this took a while I took a lil break! But I really hope you enjoy this and that I wrote everything you asked for!
And I write this in a way so you wonât get much spoilers.
Warning:Angst! Mentions a toxic home, evil stepdad, kidnapping,trauma, grieving, sad and emotionless reader, blood, stabbing, survivor guilt.
GHOST VANCE HOPPER X MALE READER.
Y/n was inside his room laying on the floor as the TV played. Y/n's eyes bore into the screen not noticing a muffled shout from downstairs. The TV screen played Y/n favorite show ever.
Sadly it was hard for Y/n to even pay attention to the show. Y/n kept glancing around his room looking at the pictures hanging around of his boyfriend.
Every time Y/n caught himself looking at the pictures heâll whip his head around as his mind runs wild about his boyfriends disappearance.
âVance⌠We weâre supposed to runaway with each other. Get out of this stupid town together.â
Y/n thought to himself knowing deep down inside that Vance would never leave him on purpose. Y/n knew it was a deeper meaning as to why his boyfriend disappeared. But sadly itâs been months and most people stopped caring for the missing teen. It wasnât like many people was searching for Vance anyway.
The door swings open hitting the wall on impact.
âY/n! Your mom has been calling your name for the past three minutes! Go down there before she starts getting on my ass!â Y/nâs step dad says staring at Y/n.
âThereâs something wrong kid? All the sudden you canât hear?â His step dad says with a mug on his face.
Y/n rolls his eyes and stands up from the floor walking up to his TV turning it off. âAnd good lord take your boyfriends pictures off the wall son he left you.â Once those words came out of his mouth Y/n shoved his stepdad out of his room before slamming the door shut.
âYou brat!â
His stepfather calls out slamming his hand on the door before walking away.
After making sure his stepdad was completely away Y/n opens his door walking downstairs to see what his mother needs.
When Y/n made it to the bottom of the staircase his mom was already waiting for him.
âGlad to see your dad listens to me.
âHeâs not my dad⌠And Iâm sorry for not hearing you earlier.â Y/n responds back crossing his arms as his mom rolls her eyes.
âI need you to go to the store. Get some groceries and then get you and your sister some snacks to eat. And after that go to the corner store and get me and your dad some cigarettes.â She says before grabbing Y/nâs arm using the pin in her other hand writing the list of groceries on him.
After she was done she gave Y/n the money and extra just in case.
Y/n grumbles complaints under his breath as he takes the money and go back up stairs to change.
After changing Y/n goes back downstairs and walk to the front door about to leave.
âAnd please Y/n, come straight home. No looking for Vance or clues for his disappearance. I know you miss him honey we both do. Itâs just that heâs gone now Y/n. He ran awayâŚâ She says before giving Y/n a sympathetic look.
Y/n listens to her words before leaving shutting the door behind him.
Digging inside his pockets Y/n gets the Walkman out and puts on the headphones before putting it back inside his pockets.
TIMESKIP
Y/n was finally halfway to the store walking on the sidewalk as he blasted music through his headphones. Y/n eyes were glued to the floor as he walked not bothering to look up.
Suddenly tapped into Y/n's foot.
Stopping in his tracks Y/n looked to see what touched him. It was a can and a few other things behind it. Y/n looked up seeing a man in white face paint on the sidewalk trying to but clumsily picking up his things.
Usually Y/n would have just avoided helping. Like going to a different direction or just out right to ignore them completely. But this time Y/n couldn't just fake his way out of this.
Y/n crouched down picking up the items that were scattered around the sidewalk. The stranger puts the fallen nearby items inside his bag before walking up to the teen.
Y/n hands him the items while imagining how Vance would have picked light fun at him for helping calling him "soft."
"T-thank you so much! Please let me pay you back for your kindness." The stranger says grabbing the teen's arm forcefully trying to pull him to the van.
"Hey man get the hell off of me!" Y/n shouts as he yanks his arm back. The man lunges for Y/n wrapping his arms around him. Y/n tries to fight back by kicking and stomping on the man's foot and also by scratching his arms.
The man swung the teen around in his arms yanking him to the van.
Y/n swung his head straight back hitting the man with the back of his head causing his nose to bleed.
"You brat!" The man shouts as he uses one of his free hand to pry open Y/n's mouth before using his other one to spray something inside his mouth.
Y/n continues to fight and sway around until his own body gives up on him slowly becoming unconscious the man swings open the van door angrily tossing Y/n inside of it before slamming it shut.
TIMESKIP
Opening his eyes slowly Y/n raised his head from the dirty mattress he laid on. As he looked around the more his brain processed what just happened before he got unconscious.
The walls were dirty and rusty and so was the floor. The only thing that kept Y/n company was a black phone besides the mattress on the wall. Y/n sat all the way up leaning his back against the wall.
The only door insight began to unlock and twist open.
Y/n quickly stood up and clenched his fist. Sure Y/n didn't fight much, but all the times he did he won and thankfully his boyfriend was a fighter so he knew a thing or two about beating the hell out of someone.
With the door opening Y/n got into a fighting stance just as his boyfriend taught him.
A man stepped into the empty basement staring at Y/n menacingly.
"Step any closer to me i'll kick your ass." Y/n says not even trying to threatening him. The teen told the man as if he was stating a fact. The man only laughs and step a few feet closer.
"Kick my ass? How cute." The grabber teases.
"Trust me I've been doing this for a long~ time. You won't be the first kid I snatched who fought back." The grabber says before adding."hmm... You know you sounded just like a boy who I kidnapped a few months ago. That's right Vance Hopper."
Y/n's fist clenched tighter as his whole body went into a state of shock and pause. "Y-you what." Y/n says with his voice cracking slightly.
"Vance~ I remember the day I kidnapped him. When I was driving around in my van I saw you two hug and kiss outside of your house. Y'all two looked so inlove as you wished each other bye. Even after he left after walking you open he still had a dopey smile on his face." The grabber says as he smirked behind his mask.
When he thought he would get an outburst from the teen Y/n stayed silent and on guard not even flinching.
The grabber lets out a frustrated noise before turning away leaving slamming the door shut.
With the new information Y/n lets go of the breath he was holding as he laid back down on the mattress thinking. As he thought his eyes wondered around looking before landing on the telephone.
Getting up Y/n walked over to the telephone picking up the phone and dialing 9-1-1. Much to Y/n's guess it didn't work and Y/n put the phone back into its place before sitting back down on his mattress.
TIMESKIP
For the past few days it has been weird and scary for Y/n. For numerous times him and the grabber fought and argued. Y/n refused to eat and drink and even one point threw the tray of food at the grabber once he came to collect it.
And even one time Y/n had gained advantage on the grabber taking him to the floor, but sadly he sprayed the same thing that caused Y/n to be unconscious the first time in his mouth.
The teen even met the ghost of the Grabbers old victims. They taught and helped Y/n against the grabber. Giving the teen tips and how to avoid the same fate they met.
The grabber haven't checked on the kid all day, so Y/n was just in the basement looking at the open scars from the previous fight he and the grabber had.
*riiing* *riiiing*
Y/n head whipped around looking at the black phone that was shaking. The teen quickly got up and walked to the phone. Picking up the phone Y/n glanced to the door making sure the grabber wasn't there.
"Hello?" Y/n says into the phone.
It was silence for a while until...
"Y/n you still sound like a fucking dork."
That's what caused Y/n to freeze. From everything that Y/n went through for the past few days this is what shocked him the most. The voice that he loved and cried for months.
"V-Vance! Is that you?!" Y/n's own voice began to betray him as tears threatened to fall.
"Yes babe it's me!" Vance's voice rings out through the phone causing Y/n start to break down.
"Vance! I'm sorry! I'm sorry that I wasn't there. For months I used to believe that you ran away without me. I-I'm so sorry Vans." Y/n sobs out as he spilled out the nickname he used to call him.
"Babe, don't start crying. I don't like hearing you cry." Vance says as his own voice began to crack.
"I miss you so much...I-I *sniff* " Y/n couldn't even finish his own sentence as he cried leaning his body against the wall.
"I know... I miss you everyday. And I guess it's my fault that we couldn't run away with each other as we planned---"
"Don't say that. It's neither of our faults okay!" Y/n cuts him off as he tried to wipe away his tears.
The phone grows quiet.
Finally breaking the painful silence.
"Promise me Y/n that you'll kick this guy's ass. Do it for the other dumb asses here... Do it for me." Vance says softly.
"I promise. You have my word babe." Y/n voices crack out knowing that he'll have to hang up soon.
"You better god damn it! I'll be there with you okay!?!..."
The two grow silent once again.
âDonât goâŚâ Y/n breathes out to the phone clenching onto it tightly.
âI have to.â
âDonât pleaseâŚeven if Iâ I survive I wonât be able to live without you Vance! You told me that we were soulmates!â Y/n begins to sob again.
âGoodbye Y/nâŚâ
With those last few words the phone rings silently.
With tears blocking his vision he drops the phone letting it hang. Y/n began to cry and shout screaming and cry out for his boyfriend.
âSo you do cry?â
Y/nâs head whips around looking at the man that stood by the door.
âAfter everything this what makes you break? You miss your pathetic boyfriend? Well your in luck because I feel a bit generous today.â The grabber teases before walking towards Y/n.
Once he was close enough Y/n tries to push him away, but the grabber was fast taking a fistful of Y/nâs hair yanking him to him.
The grabber pulls Y/n to the bathroom area.
âThis is weâre he died.â The grabber says yanking Y/nâs head to the wall forcing him to look at the pool of dried blood on the walls.
âI took his head just how I am with yours and banged his head against the wall until he was bloody and limp.â The grabber says whispering into Y/nâs ear.
With the picture painted in his mind Y/n eyes started to water as the grabber went on and on about how he killed him.
TIMESKIP
Since his last call Y/n and the ghost began to communicate more and more.
Their calls became more helpful and strategic preparing for whatâs about to come or really the day heâs supposed to be killed. Y/n had been staring at the door for the longest.
Y/n looked to the side of the room seeing all the ghost standing by the wall. Who really stuck out to Y/n was his boyfriend looking at him with so much guilt and confidence.
Vanceâs eyes softened once him and Y/n met eyes. Y/n gave Vance a small smile before turning back around looking at the door again.
With the door slowly opening Y/n stands up from the bed.
Bracing himself Y/n gets ready to fight with everything he got. With the door opening Y/nâs eyes glare.
First a dog steps inside the room with a steel chain wrapped around his neck. The grabber walks inside behind the dog with a smirk.
âYou really are just like your boyfriend. Never backing down from a fight.â The grabber taunts as the dog bark and growl.
âKeep his name out of your fucking mouth.â Y/n says with a straight face showing no emotion.
The grabber ties the chain around a pipe as he takes a knife from his back pocket.
âToo much of a little girl to fight me with your fist.â Y/n says as heâs the one whoâs taunting now.
Out of nowhere the grabber strikes pouncing in front of Y/n before swaying the knife to Y/nâs arm. Y/n dodges just in time right before the grabber tries to stab him again.
As the grabber misses a swing Y/n winds up his own arm before giving him a quick hook to the cheek.
The grabber reacts fast using the closeness to his advantage giving Y/n a quick slice to the arm.
As the two fought the ghost watch in different parts of the room. Watching intensely.
Soon enough The grabber begins to play dirty by tackling Y/n onto the hard cold dirty floor. Raising the knife above his head The grabber swings his arm down directly at Y/nâs face.
With luck Y/n swiftly moves his head out of the way making the knife dig into the floor. As the Grabber tries to pull it back Y/n punches the man straight in the stomach causing the Grabber to hunch over and gasp.
Y/n pushes the grabber off of him before quickly climbing on top.
Similar to how Vance got arrested Y/n started to punch the living shit out of the grabber. The grabbers face quickly became bloody.
Once the man under the teen became weak Y/n stood up walking to the knife that was stabbed into the floor he pulled it out before walking back to him.
âYou killed those innocent boys⌠More importantly you killed my boyfriend.â Y/n says as he crawled onto him.
Sitting in his stomach Y/n wrapped both hands around the knife handle bringing the knife above his head he angled the knife above his heart.
Without any more words Y/n plunged the knife deep inside the manâs chest. Y/n drive the knife deep before pulling it out and back inside stabbing him repeatedly.
âYou killed my boyfriend you fucking asshole!â Y/n shouted as he stabbed him again and again.
Finally calming down Y/n dropped the knife before getting up and looked around.
With all the ghost staring at him Y/n knew what they wanted to do. Y/n ran up the stares leaving the basement before running to the front door that was surprisingly unlocked.
The only thing Y/n could do now was shut and find someone.
Sprinting out of the yard Y/n ran with all his might. What Y/n didnât notice that his boyfriend was in the middle of the street watching him run away watching Y/n with a proud expression.
âGood job babeâŚâ
Byler doubt has seeped into my mind and the thing about it is I see an argument for Mileven and Byler.
I will briefly mention that the fact we hardly see Will and Eleven interact onscreen kills me. These two understand the Upside Down and supernatural crap in a way the whole group does not and it kills me we donât see them talk about it. Not only that, but they are among the most selfless of the group and they have received nothing in return.
Anyway, hereâs my reasoning for both:
Originally I was like âYâknow what? Yeah, Will hasnât got a single good thing going for him like the entire show, he deserves something good and Byler canon would be perfect.â But couldnât the same be said for Eleven? Sheâs suffered just as much if not more. If anyone deserves someone romantically Iâd argue itâs her over Will.
However, I am not saying Eleven needs a man. What Eleven has always needed most was a sense of belonging and an exploration into who she is. In support of Byler it would make the most sense that she needs to explore her autonomy and figure out who she is and what she wants. Her whole life has been for everyone but her. As much as Hawkins needs Elevenâs help, I hope we can spend some time for her to discover herself and gain control of her life in Season 5. Her best future would be without Mike romantically, it would be with Mike and the party platonically. She needs support and love from friends and family. She needs to know she has value beyond what she can do for others and beyond her powers. She needs to know she matters.
Eleven wants to feel like a normal teenage girl and doesnât want to feel like sheâs wrong or a mistake. Max gave her the chance to be a normal teenage girl and Elevenâs happiest memories are from time spent with Max. Iâd also like to add that these moments with Max subvert the makeover trope because she wants Eleven to discover what she likes rather than Max choosing for her. Max has always wanted to give Eleven exactly what she wants: autonomy and normalcy.
Will needs romantic love. Eleven needs support and platonic love from those around her, and while Will needs support as well, him receiving romantic love would help him justify his existence. He feels like a mistake and that his love for Mike is wrong. Will gave up on Mikeâs love in an attempt to save Elevenâs relationship. Will needs to feel like he matters, especially to his best friend and possible love interest Mike. Will receiving Mikeâs love would complete his arc with him understanding heâs not a mistake, his love is normal and natural. He has been pushed aside for too long and the boy needs some serious love, care, affection and attention. At this point in the story Will must feel incredibly hopeless and without a future. His friends no longer have interest in his interests, he doesnât appear to have any friends in California, heâs given up on his crush on Mike and the world is quite literally ending right before his eyes.
Mikeâs love saving Will from Vecna and the end of the world and finally understanding what has really been going on between these two best friends would be a gorgeous choice narratively. âYes we can play D&D and Nintendo in my basement for the rest of our lives, I love you.â This narrative would disprove his idea that he would never fall in love. It would be a beautiful message to all gay people, youâre not a mistake, youâre worthy of love. It would also explain to Will it was never about wanting to leave âchildishâ things behind, it was always about fear and internalized homophobia.
Now, letâs talk Michael Wheeler. Will and Mike have a falling out over Mike and Lucas not wanting to play D&D with him in ST3. Then Will leaves and suddenly in ST4 the remaining core four members are playing D&D again? My theory is that Mike playing D&D was his way of connecting with Will. D&D was their medium to be their true selves and when they stop playing D&D and Will leaves, Mike feels like he lost Will. I think Mike was the first to show interest in the Hellfire Club and by playing it with his friends he hoped to recreate the same feelings of happiness when he used to play D&D. However, it doesnât work which is why Mike doesnât appear happy in early ST4. When they beat Eddieâs campaign we donât see him celebrating with his friends and thatâs when he begins to realize whatâs wrong: It doesnât feel the same. He doesnât miss playing D&D, he misses Will. It was never about the fantasy role playing game, it was always about how he was able to spend time playing with the boy he loves.
Anyway, hereâs some honorable mentions and details Iâd like to talk about:
Max and Eleven the duo you are đâšď¸ I really wish we had more moments for them as friends, I feel like Eleven wouldâve really been there for Max while she was depressed following the events of ST3.
I feel like Elevenâs supernatural plot for ST5 should be focused on Max, it would make more sense that she and Lucas are trying to free someone who meant so much to them. Max was the most positive influence on Eleven next to Hopper. Beyond that, Eleven should have some time to discover her wants to some extent this season. Sheâs more than a weapon.
I think itâs so interesting how Will and Eleven are almost foils. In ST1-2 itâs almost like they cannot be on the same place at once (Will gets taken to the UD, Eleven has to save him, Will is saved, Eleven replaces his spot in the UD, Will is possessed, Eleven returns to help him, Will is freed and Eleven must return to hiding until the Snowball. Itâs a very interesting choice), they need the opposite forms of love and Eleven is empowered to fight while Will is only able to flight.
There are a few parallels between the two, such as Mikeâs âloveâ hurting both Will and Eleven and strangely enough the love they need from Mike is the opposite of the love theyâre receiving from him. They also both feel like monsters or âotheredâ because of things that they arenât in control of.
My recent obsession has been Mike Wheeler edits with âLike Himâ as the song
I need Stranger Things 5 trailer now right now please please pleaseeee
My favorite genre is ensemble cast in a small town solving mysteries/fighting bad guys and navigating complex family/romantic relationships, with a healthy dose of the supernatural and a heavy sprinkle of unavoidable, profound tragedy. Yes please give me a group of weirdo kids or teens caught in the middle of a homicide investigation. Please, let every single character be funny and sad. Give me a sheriff. And a frazzled mother-figure. And an edgy high-schooler with too much eyeliner and daddy issues. Heck, a himbo, too. And the deepest, most profound friendships. Give me a baller soundtrack. Throw "I know the end" in there. Go crazy with it, add a moody cover of an 80s song. I want drama, I want comedy, I want Vibes, I want complicated relationships. I want kids riding bikes down decrepit suburban streets and fighting monsters with garden tools. I want nasty outdated high-schools that house half the narrative of the story. I want them to be doomed from the start. I wanna bawl my eyes out about it.
Random thought bc I'm now rewatching s4: a while back, I saw someone say that Joyce and Will shouldn't have let El do her project of hopper bc they knew that she would get bullied for it but I assume that Will probably did say something about it to her but she got defensive and started being stubborn about it and Will didn't want to hurt her feelings so he probably just dropped it. Idk just something I thought about.
