I decided that I'd make a post (and poll) questioning the label 'Salmacian' and 'Altersex' mostly due to @/trans-axolotl's post (link) and the comments on said post regarding the problematic history of those labels, specifically towards the intersex community.

As someone who is both Intersex (PCOS) and used to identify with both labels, I wanted to spread awareness of this discomfort and open a forum for discussion for perhaps renaming these labels or using new labels.

The proposed labels were bigenital and transneutral however 'bigenital' may not describe someone's dysphoria or euphoria accurately.

Another alternative was coined by @/clowncaraz-journal and explained in this post.

Endosex flag

A new flag design for endosex, which acts as a sort of midway design between my perisex flag design and the dyadic flag. [SVG here] Endosex is one of three common terms used to mean not intersex, and was initially coined in German by Heike Bödeker (who is intersex) in 1999. The other common terms are perisex and dyadic.

I've been thinking there's utility in having slightly-different-but-similar meanings for endosex, perisex & dyadic to allow for us to talk about how intersex-ness in nonhumans can be really complex. My survey about what these slightly-different meanings should be is still open, so if you have thoughts about whether a snail with typical sex development should be perisex and not dyadic (or something along those lines), send me your feedback here! 📋️

For comparison: I've put the dyadic flag on the left. Designed by @pride-flags-for-cishets, it uses a square as a contrast to the ring of the intersex flag. And it has blue and pink to indicate the traditional sex dyad/binary. It gets used in designs like the extersex flag.

But for some perisex trans/enby folks, a pink-and-blue flag understandably doesn't sit so well! 🙃 So I designed a perisex flag after a flag design by @clowncaraz inspired me. I'm trying in the perisex flag to illustrate how perisex folks are on the two ends of the two "typical" ways that sex development happens (Wolffian or Müllerian). The filled-in arrows represent Wolffian and Müllerian.

Both the endosex and perisex flags use a dark periwinkle that is both purplish and bluish, a colour that I've been seeing used in other flag designs to indicate not being intersex.

The white in the perisex and endosex flags is used to indicate that biology is not destiny: trans people can take their bodies and put them on a completely different path.

The dyadic flag doesn't have any confirmed colour meanings, so I don't have an obvious meaning for the black in the endosex flag.

I'm thinking I'll wait on the results of the endosex/perisex/dyadic-in-nonhumans survey before assigning a meaning to the black. Same for if the light periwinkle means anything beyond not-intersex like the dark periwinkle does. Expect a follow-up on this in late October / early Nov.

The light periwinkle in the endosex flag is the same one in @clowncaraz's design because it's just a really nice colour that I'm fond of for this purpose, and wanted a way to make use of it. 😁

clowncaraz-journal has a history of intersexism on prior blogs like xenoworlds. they've talked about somatization making a perisex person no longer perisex, and they've done things like imply that circumcision is a form of or is adjacent to being intersex. i really don't think this is who we should be looking towards for a solution here

Perisex flag ideas: request for feedback

Earlier today I came across this perisex flag design (on the left) by @clowncaraz and was inspired to play with the design a bit. I've got two versions I made (middle, right) that I'd like to share and get feedback on what people prefer! 💜

I liked the cut purple box in clowncaraz's design and got the idea of old-school balancing scales ⚖️ with Wolffian on one side and Müllerian on the other. It also got me thinking of a split arrow design and how every zygote starts out with the same (lack of) sex characteristics.

But the sun in clowncaraz's design admittedly confused me 😅 - I first read it as an Ox or as the top of the Mercury symbol. So I thought I'd iterate and play with the balancing scales/split arrow idea.

Here's my first version:

I darkened the periwinkle and use white for the centre icon to represent all the possibilities one can do with a perisex body. The periwinkle represents being perisex, and is the opposite (180-degree) colour of intersex yellow in okLCH colour space.

Second version:

This is a simplified version of the first - it loses the top middle line. It looks cleaner to me, but I think the theming isn't quite as clear.

Which version do you prefer? Do you have suggestions on how to further iterate the design? Ty! 🩵

Müllerian and Wolffian Astronomy-Style Symbols

Left: Müllerian - a perisex person whose innate sex development is in line with societal expectations of "biological female". The symbol is a reference to electronics symbology for a female socket. Right: Wolffian - a perisex person whose innate sex development is in line with societal expectations of "biological male". The symbol is a reference to the same electronics symbology, but for a male plug.

Thank you all for the feedback! I've got two new versions thanks to feedback from @clowncaraz and @scifimagpie

A concern is that the Venus-style arrow and Mars-style arrow are associated with gender, and for some folks it would be productive to decouple sex and gender imagery.

Right now, the proposed gender symbols for Wolffian and Mullerian double down on the Mars/Venus thing. So as an alternative, how about electronics symbols for "female" and "male" connectors:

The result is a little visually unbalanced though. So clowncaraz suggested Version 4:

If anybody know if these suggested sex symbols have already been used for a gender/etc symbol please let me know! Reverse google image search didn't give me much of use.

Update: as an anon has told us, "clowncaraz-journal has a history of intersexism on prior blogs like xenoworlds. they've talked about somatization making a perisex person no longer perisex, and they've done things like imply that circumcision is a form of or is adjacent to being intersex."

We no longer recommend this option and we apologize for not looking into the user more before suggesting their alternative. We also want to comment on the option of keeping the labels Salmacian and Altersex. The option was only added obligatorily, we do not recommend we keep these labels as they are harmful to the intersex community.

The intersex community is often ignored and not properly advocated for so it is important we listen when they speak up.
