Hello Good Omens tumblr

So um I put good omens into chronological order on youtube and it took me a really long time (link to playlist here)

And I’m in the process of subtitling it, with the help of @hysterical-mess, @arsamatoria, @lickthecowhappy and @ineffqble, and I would really like some more people to help with it. Currently there are 213 videos on the playlist, 16 of which have been subtitled (about 8 of the videos on the playlist weren’t published by me so i cant subtitle them, they were published by prime).

Admittedly, I haven’t been spending every second of every day subtitling because y’know, I have a life to live and school to sit through but there’s no way the process of videos getting subtitled could go slower with more people subtitling!

There is no amount or videos you have to subtitle and if you try it and realise you hate it, you never have to do it again. I would just really appreciate some help making these videos more accessible.

Obviously there is no pressure if you don’t want to, I feel it is quite a niche thing to want to do voluntarily.

You don’t need any experience, hell you don’t need to have gcses, you just need to be able to spell and know basic grammar :D

Also, if part of your video is in a second language, PAY SOMEONE TO TRANSLATE IT, don’t just put “speaks Arabic” — or my least favorite, “foreign language.” If you have the budget to do this and you don’t use it, that’s lazy at best.

Side note: speaking as someone who designs captions/subtitles professionally, the descriptive captions for Dropout TV are some of the best I’ve ever seen, because they not only caption everything, but the descriptions of in-between sounds and actions capture the *spirit* of what’s going on and offer context when needed so truly *everyone* can participate in the humor and enjoy the show as fully as possible. Whoever their captioner is, they should be the gold standard.

unsolicited fun fact about videos, and captions: by federal law, all streaming services relating to videos, even audio in some cases, MUST have closed captioning for the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing

if a service otherwise does not provide accurate, if any, closed captioning, you MUST report them, as it is a violation of federal law.

I hate when I'm streaming and all of a sudden the captions don't work and I have to sit there and try to figure out what's being said on my own and half sound alike gibberish so I'm SOL (shit out of luck) until they DO want to work (sometimes the next episode and sometimes not) like I can barely hear some of what they say and even when I can it's mumbled because there's BACKGROUND music

I’m also very sick of companies not hiring actual people to transcribe the show/movie. I’m not HOH or deaf so I can CLEARLY hear that what’s being said is not at all close to what’s in the subtitles. This is a large problem in anime right now. I’m also watching Downton Abbey and there consistent spelling of last names is an issue. Parts where the accents are thick aren’t getting correctly transcribed by AI or whatever tech they’re using to get the job done.

I'm not even like deaf or hoh but if you're adding subtitles to something I think you should always transcribe foreign languages too. None of that [Speaks Spanish] shit. You don't need to translate it to english. But you need to at least give the option for a deaf person to read it and understand it themselves. I don't care if it's not important to the plot. I don't care if it's just them saying like Okay or Damn or whatever the fuck. Write it down
