Robert Gober made Untitled (2011), an edition of 15, by printing the lyrics to "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from The Sound of Music on carefully aged paper using pieces of potato. The bonkers potato printing process is detailed by Krakow Witkin Gallery, where an example of the edition is on view in early December 2024.

Sitting through The Sound of Music during an obligatory family movie night this Thanksgiving weekend. I'd watched it before some as a kid but now, y'all HOLY SHIT.
Naive protagonist is volun-told to leave their restrictive religious background to deal with the outside world. Shenanigans ensue. Protagonist has a fire-ice relationship with the One Person They Should Not Fall in Love with, but the two eventually find common ground. Big party scene featuring historic Dancing. Protagonist is confronted by a shady side character who points out the Impossible Relationship that is developing. Protagonist abandons love to run back to their extremely religious upbringing.
Also Nazis.
Good Omens Fandom, can I get a wahoo?

My daughter's school did "The Sound of Music" this year for their play; my daughter was Mother Abbess. Honestly, you don't expect this sort of thing to go past being a proud parent who might have to hear someone else's kid (natch) miss a note here and there, but this particular performance turned into an actual news story on account of how best to handle a play that deals with Nazi Germany where young ones are concerned. Literally four local news outlets, the regional paper, the local free news site, and a handful of other news outlets picked it up. I don't know if anyone was completely happy with the outcome--I wrote about it at some length on the Substack.
Tonight, though, I just want to lean in on the experience and something that's a touchstone for a lot of us. There are just a load of canonical songs in the musical; "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is maybe the trickiest to sing. Peggy Wood is just amazing here. And I'm a proud parent for my daughter having done her best with it--and with the whole play.

She lives there now.
(Don't make the mistake of thinking she is stuck. She's exactly where she wanted to be. It's my fault for not letting her climb even higher and retreat into the mountain fully, which is her dream.)

Gaze upon my wild child. She has never met a hill she hasn't wanted to go up.

Aziraphale knows the stage play. Crowley knows the cinematic version. That’s why they couldn’t understand each other.
In the play, Maria and Captain dance the Laëndler together and realize their feelings for each other. In the film, Elsa approaches Maria in private to tell her that the Captain is in love with her instead.
The famous gazebo where Rolfe and Liesl find shelter from the rain for “Sixteen Going On Seventeen” and the subsequent kiss is a film addition. In the play, she’s just sitting on a garden bench and the rain starts after she comes back inside.
In both versions, however, the song “Climb Ev'ry Mountain” is encouraging the heroine to follow her feelings and find the life she was meant to live instead of hiding behind the convent walls.
To determine her fate herself, instead of leaving it in God’s or nuns hands.
It really was there from the beginning…
While there is no Jane Austen novel (or film adaptation of one of her novels) wherein a couple dances at a ball and realizes that they've greatly misunderstood one another and that they are actually deeply in love, Aziraphale did actually see this in a film... unlike Crowley and The Vavoom. What film that we know Aziraphale has seen has a dance at a ball leading to a realization of misunderstanding and love?

It's almost a good thing that he got into the elevator because one more day of this mental health crisis and he'd be trying to get Mr. Arnold to play "Edelweiss" on guitar at the first annual Whickber Street Shopkeepers and Traders Association Presents: The Lonely Goatherd Puppet Show.
