Why isn't hockey a very common sport in other countries?
Hockey, particularly ice hockey, isn't as common in many countries due to several factors:
1. Climate and Geography
Cold Weather Requirements: Ice hockey traditionally requires cold weather to maintain ice rinks, making it naturally more popular in countries with long winters, like Canada, Russia, and Scandinavian nations.
Limited Access to Facilities: In warmer climates, maintaining ice rinks is expensive and impractical, limiting the sport's accessibility.
2.High Costs
Expensive Equipment: Ice hockey requires specialized and often expensive gear, including skates, sticks, helmets, and pads, which can be prohibitive for many.
Rink Maintenance: The cost of building and maintaining ice rinks is high, making it less feasible in many regions.
3. Cultural Factors
Historical Roots: Ice hockey has deep cultural roots in countries like Canada and Russia, where it has been played for over a century. In contrast, many countries have long-established traditions in other sports.
Lack of Exposure: In countries where hockey isn’t part of the cultural fabric, there’s limited media coverage, fewer role models, and less overall interest.
4. Popularity of Other Sports
Dominance of Other Sports: In many countries, other sports like soccer (football), cricket, or basketball dominate the sports landscape, leaving little room for hockey to grow.
National Focus: Governments and sports organizations may focus resources on developing sports that are already popular or in which the country has a competitive advantage.
5. Development and Infrastructure
Youth Programs: Countries with strong hockey cultures invest heavily in youth development programs, which are often lacking in other regions.
Professional Leagues: The lack of local professional leagues in many countries means there are fewer opportunities for players to advance and for fans to engage with the sport.
6. Global Reach and Marketing
Limited Global Marketing: Compared to sports like soccer or basketball, ice hockey has a more limited global marketing reach. The NHL, the premier professional hockey league, primarily targets North American audiences.
International Competitions: While ice hockey is featured in international competitions like the Winter Olympics, it doesn’t have as many globally recognized events as other sports, limiting its international appeal.
These factors combined make hockey a niche sport in many countries, despite its strong following in regions where the conditions are favorable. However, roller hockey and field hockey are more accessible and popular in some other parts of the world, showing that variations of the sport can thrive under different circumstances.

Greenpeace Urges Climate Action in Marcos' SONA
Tumblr media
Climate Justice Demands and Corporate Accountability
Greenpeace, in anticipation of President Marcos Jr.'s second State of the Nation Address, called on the administration to deliver genuine progress on their promised climate and environmental policies. The demand came after the environmental group beamed climate justice demands of communities in a floodway along Brgy. Tumana, Marikina City on Saturday night. The core of their call is for the government to hold oil and gas companies accountable for their role in exacerbating the climate crisis and to provide reparations to the communities most impacted by climate change.   Greenpeace Campaigner Calls for Action on Climate Justice Jefferson Chua, a campaigner from Greenpeace, stated that the billions of pesos spent on mitigating climate change effects and adapting to new realities cannot keep up with the escalating impacts experienced by Filipino communities. Chua emphasized that the responsibility to pay for climate impacts falls squarely on corporations that deny their role in the climate crisis. He urged the President to translate his words on climate justice into action, showing allegiance to the Filipino people rather than big businesses profiting from environmental destruction.   Corporate Responsibility and Liability for Climate Damages Greenpeace pointed out the significant findings from the 2022 Climate Change and Human Rights (NICC) report by the Commission on Human Rights. The report established the moral responsibility of fossil fuel companies for human rights harms caused by climate impacts, making them potentially liable for damages. Additionally, a 2023 study published in OneEarth estimated that the top oil and gas companies owe USD 70 trillion worth of climate loss and damage to those disproportionately affected by climate impacts.   Community Perspectives on Climate Impacts In Barangay Tumana, community leaders expressed concerns about the adequacy of their local mitigation and adaptation efforts against more extreme weather events. They believe that reparations from multinational companies, primarily responsible for climate change, are crucial to respond more effectively to the crisis.   Path to Genuine Climate Justice Greenpeace emphasized that genuine climate justice can only be achieved if the government reduces its dependence on fossil fuels and prioritizes a just transition to 100 percent renewable energy. This imperative includes the necessity of avoiding unnecessary detours, such as dangerous and costly nuclear energy. Additionally, it entails recognizing the fact that natural gas, too, is a fossil fuel.
President Marcos Jr.'s Role in Climate Justice
With the privilege of widespread support in both Houses, the Marcos administration stands in a unique position to fulfill its promises. Consequently, Greenpeace calls on President Marcos Jr. to take proactive measures in advancing policies deeply rooted in climate justice and ensuring their swift enactment.   A Strong Message Against Climate Polluters Jefferson Chua expressed the hope that President Marcos Jr. uses his SONA not only as a platform for words but also, importantly, to deliver a powerful message against climate polluters and make them pay for the consequences of their unchecked greed. President Marcos Jr.'s 2nd SONA was watched worldwide for genuine climate justice and environmental protection steps. Greenpeace's global call for accountability resonates amid communities facing climate change impacts. Urgent corporate responsibility and a swift transition to renewable energy are vital for a sustainable future. The Philippines and other nations face the pressing challenge of addressing climate change while ensuring accountability.   Sources: THX News & Greenpeace. Read the full article

Compound impacts of extreme heat and drought will hit 90% of population, widen inequality, reduce CO2 sequestration
New research from the University of Oxford, Department of Geography highlights the compound impacts of extreme heat and drought.
* Warming is projected to intensify these hazards ten-fold globally under the highest emission pathway,
* the linked threats of heat and drought represent a significantly higher risk to society and ecosystems than when either threat is considered independently
* may have severe socio-economic and ecological impacts which could aggravate socio inequalities, as they are projected to have more severe impacts on poorer people and rural areas.
* limited water availability will hit the ability of ‘carbon sinks’ – natural biodiverse regions – to take in carbon emissions and emit oxygen.
Professor Slater says, ‘Understanding compounding hazards in a warming Earth is essential for the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG13 that aims to combat climate change and its impacts. By combining atmospheric dynamics and hydrology, we explore the role of water and energy budgets in causing these extremes.’
Australia has just had three years of La Nina with high rainfall and flooding. It is likely we may move into an El Nino period of higher temperatures and reduced rainfall. That will stress our landscapes and carbon sinks, agricultural productivity and human health.
In 2022 we saw the impact of reduced rainfall and extreme heat in China, reduced water storage impacting hydro power and flowing through to reduced production.
At the same time in Europe we saw a drought and extreme heat causing disruptions to river transport and agriculture.

Q1:What is the main ecological issue?
> Types. Major current environmental issues may include climate change, pollution, environmental degradation, and resource depletion.
Tumblr media
Q2:Wich ecosystem is affected? Describe it an detail.
Top 10 most threatened ecosystems
> Caribbean coral reefs. > Alaskan kelp forest. > Murray-Darling basin wetlands. > Sydney coastal wetlands. > South karst springs. > Coorong lagoon and Murray River estuary. > Mountain 'fynbos' on Cape Town. > Rhineland raised bogs.
Q3:Who is responsible for the damage?
> Any person who by an act or omission causes damage to another by his fault or negligence shall be liable for the damage so done.
Q4:Who and what is affected by the ecological (environmental) problem?
> Environmental pollutants can cause health problems like respiratory diseases, heart disease, and some types of cancer. People with low incomes are more likely to live in polluted areas and have unsafe drinking water. And children and pregnant women are at higher risk of health problems related to pollution.
Q5:Are there any statistics to help explain why this is an issue?
Problem 1. Extracting meaning out of little difference. Problem 2. Using small sample sizes. Problem 3. Showing meaningless percentages on graphs. Problem 4. Poor survey design.  Problem 5. Scaling and axis manipulation.
Q6:Are other ecosystems affected as well?
> These connections between ecosystems also make them dependent on one another, and not simply dependent on the organisms within them. Climate change affects ecosystems in many ways. Climate controls how plants grow, how animals behave, which organisms thrive, and how they all interact with the physical environment.
Q7:Other facts you come across about the issue and the ecosystem.
>Coral reefs are beautiful and fragile. >Half the world's species live in tropical rainforests. >To live in the desert, you have to save water. >Grasslands are all around.   >Freshwater ecosystems have rare species. >In the tundra, life is tough.

California’s fire tornado is what climate change looks like
Rick Li originally shared:
For weeks now, the world has been in the grips of a global #heatwave - one of the most destructive and unusually hot summers in human history. And we know that a summer like this couldn’t have happened without #climatechange. In #California and in #wildfire zones around the world, survivors are sharing the images and videos they captured while fleeing some of the most destructive fires in history.
From an on-the-ground, human perspective, July looked and felt like hell. With more than a dozen large fires burning throughout California, this year’s fire season is already starting to outstrip the state’s resources. Thousands of firefighters have flown in from across the country to help fight the blazes, and wildfire season is just getting started. August is the peak month for wildfires across the western U.S.
