Making the Draenei Language - Part 2
Part 1 | Part 3
First off, thanks to all the people who’ve expressed interest in this project! It makes me super happy that people think what I’m doing is interesting :D
Anyway, last time I went through and got a basic idea of the structure of the language, this time we’re diving into WHAT 👏 THAT👏 MOUTH👏 DO (and also spelling)
Tumblr media
... and by that I of course mean phonetics (the study of the sounds produced in speech), phonology (the study of which sounds differentiate meaning) and phonotactics (how sounds are put together).
Phonetics and Phonology
Before we can even consider choosing some sounds for the language lets take a moment to consider those TEEF!
Tumblr media
Taking my main boy Aegagrus (drawn by the wonderful @rurukatt, definitely didn’t put this in here cuz I still love this pic) as a model for my headcanon of Draenei teeth, we can see how those might get in the way of some sounds... but just like, specifically [f] and [v] (sounds in square brackets represent sounds not the letters, to hear what they sound like go here!) Both of those sounds involve making the same shape with your mouth - touching your bottom lip to your top teeth, but when you got some real long or pointy teeth, that might be a little bit hard to do! (or an accident waiting to happen if they’re sharp enough)
There’s only a small problem with this though, we have some canon words that use these sounds e.g “Pheta vi acahaci” - Light give me strength. I’m gonna explain this away by saying that we’re dealing with an approximate transcription using the Latin alphabet and English spelling conventions, which definitely wasn't designed to write down languages outside of well.. ideally Latin. I mean there’s a reason why English spelling is the way it is and one of those reasons comes down to using an alphabet too small for the number of sounds in the language.
Tangent aside, this means those two sounds are probably something like [ɸ] (again click here to hear these) for f and [β~ʋ] for v. These are sounds similar to [f] and [v] but they don’t involve teeth touching lips, check, and they’re probably what human transcribers misheard as [f] and [v].
Going through the other transcriptions in the data and making some guesses as to what they could be, we end up with something like this:
Tumblr media
and huh that seems familiar... wait a second!
Tumblr media
Yeah that’s just Hebrew without voiced fricatives, affricates or the sound [j] (the ‘y’ sound in English), and a bonus rhotic. I mean that’s probably to be expected as Draenei are heavily coded to be Jewish (a good post on that), so it makes sense that the sounds are also similar. It’s a shame to have such quote-unquote normal sounds (the th sound [θ] in ”thin” and “ether” is only in 4% of the worlds languages!) but that’s what you get when English devs make a game for a western audience, you get... ~~the fantasy accent~~ a.k.a discount slavic/germanic accents.
By the way [r] is the ‘trilled’ or ‘rolled’ r and [ɾ] is a ‘tapped’ r like in Spanish "por favor”.
Also, as another side note, this sound [ʔ] - the glottal stop is present in English too but you probably don’t recognise that it’s there. It’s the ‘-’ break in between “uh-oh”, and its also present in some dialects of American and British English where the [t] in words like “bottle” (bo’el) and “water” (wa’er) are replaced with the glottal stop.
Anyway, onto vowels! And yet again we come back to the problems of English spellings. English has approximately... too many vowels. In my dialect of Australian Standard English there’s up to 20 different vowel sounds depending on how you count. I mean all things considered we've done pretty well with the 5 vowel symbols we've got but good luck trying to accurately represent all this:
Tumblr media
(not to mention the diphthongs) with just a e i o u. Most languages only have ~5 vowels so that’s about what I’m looking for. Taking into consideration all the English wackiness in spelling, we end up with what I think are 7 vowels (the pronunciation examples are definitely not gonna be spot on due to regional differences, learn the IPA its good):
[i] - meat, me, three, e-mail
[ʊ] - (short though) good, should, wood
[ʊ:] - (same as above but long)
[e] - bed, head, red
[ɔ~o] - (somewhere between the vowels in) bought, bot (those of you with the cot-caught merger are having real fun now)
[ɐ] - (this one is really only in Australian English) but, strut, bud
[ɐ:] - (same as above but long) bard, palm, start, hard
The two vowels with long forms are the interesting ones. All throughout the canon text we see ‘aa’ and ‘uu’ popping up again and again in things like “Maraad”, “Sayaad”, “Enkaat”, “Vaard”, “Tuurem” and “Krokuun”. Now this could just be stylistic choices made by the dev team to make the language seem more ~exotic~ but I think that it is definitely a case of phonemic vowel length. That’s where distinctions in words are made by elongating a vowel - something Latin had. But it’s not to be confused with what English calls ‘long vowels’, which are really the leftovers from actual vowel length after everyone in 1500 decided to pronounce every vowel just... completely different for some reason. The Great Vowel Shift is an interesting read). Anyway, it makes these double letters make sense, and is way more interesting than random double vowels. It’s also interesting that it’s not perfectly symmetric either, not all the vowels have this distinction, which is cool and perfectly natural for languages to do!
What is weird is that  [ɔ~o] doesn’t have this feature, because in our vowel system, it’s almost directly in the middle of our two long/short vowels so it would probably assimilate and end up doing the same thing! So, going off that I’m going to simulate the beginning of language evolution, where the [ɔ~o] sounds is in the process of diverging into [o:] (oar, caught, thought) when it’s followed by ‘r, t, d, k or g’ and [ɔ] (lot, pot) everywhere else.
So, now we have the sounds for our language, how are they used? (dw hardcore conlanging people, I’ve worked out the rest of the allomorphy rules for the consonants but this post is already loooong)
Phonotactics
Phonotactics is largely about how syllables are formed and what sounds are allowed where. In an effort to try and not make the language *too* similar to English I want these rules to differ from English. Luckily, that’d really easy to do because yet again, English is a statistically weird language!
Syllables are divided into 3 parts - The onset, The nucleus and the Coda. For simplicities sake this corresponds to the consonants before the vowel, the vowel, and the consonants after the vowel. English lets wayyyyy too many consonants on either side ending up with abominations like “strengths” having 3 sounds before the nucleus and 3 after, or crimes against god like “twelfths” with 4 sounds after the coda.
Draenei on the other hand seems to be at most (C)(L)V(C). The brackets mean a sound is optional, C’s being consonants, L being ‘liquids’ like [l] and [r] (and [ʋ]) and V of course being vowels. Now going through the data (plus some creative input) we end up with some rules as to what can go where...
Tumblr media
but we’ll leave the details of that for the final documentation and head onto...
Spelling! Everyone’s favourite...
There have been countless forum posts about how to pronounce ‘Draenei’ and even between developers at different panels there doesn't seem to be a consensus. This is probably due to the inconsistent spellings used throughout the lexicon so far - draenei and auchenai rhyme (I think) but they’re spelt with different endings!
With the language I have a few main goals
- Make it match as closely as reasonable with canon and common interpretations - Have the spelling be consistent (same letters should always produce the same sound) - In line with the first one, keep as much of the spelling the same as possible - Make it as alien as possible within reason (sadly phonetics and phonology will not be the place to do that)
So coming to a word like “Draenei”, I have to break at least one thingon that list. Personally I want it to be pronounced [drɐ.naɪ] (druh-nai). So, to be consistent with the sounds from before it should be spelt ‘Dranai’ but that definitely won’t do, or I could keep the spelling and pronounce it literally [drɐ.e.ne.i] (druh-eh-ne-ey to give a rough guide for that), which is... equally bad.
The compromise I'm going with is keeping the spelling of Draenei but making the [aɪ] (ai) sound spelt ‘ei’ across the language. Meaning is gonna be Auchenei. Well, not really because there’s still a bunch of other spellings that need standardising.
the ‘ch’ in “Auchenei” is pronounced with a [k], so is the ‘c’ in “Dioniss aca”. Going through and standardising things like ‘ph’ -> ‘f’, ‘ch’ -> ‘k’ or ‘sh’ depending and rewriting vowels to match the phonology we end up with something that preserves most of the identity and look of the language but just makes more sense! Aukenei would then be the spelling I’m using in the lexicon, probably with a little note for the canon spelling.
So, from now on I'm going to be using the reformed spelling TM, which hopefully will mean anyone attempting to speak this language will have an easier time getting what I'm envisioning, cuz everything is now consistant.
That about does it for this post. Yet again if you made it all the way to the bottom, congratulations! Hopefully the next posts will be a bit more interesting (I’m so fucking pumped for how the culture will impact the grammar and vocabulary holy shit) but I gotta get this one out of the way.
Next time, we’ll be doing word-building - the morphology of the language, Thanks for reading!

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Gosh, I sure wish I could feel extremely small and awed right now”? Do we ever have the solution for you!
After over a decade of painstaking work, Finnish astrophotographer J-P Metsavainio has released an absolutely jaw-dropping 1.7-gigapixel mosaic of the plane of the Milky Way galaxy.
Metsavainio has been publishing his astrophotography online since 2007, but his work on the mosaic started in 2009, with photographing various nebulae around the Milky Way as independent compositions.
The total exposure time between 2009 and 2021 is around 1,250 hours. (To load the full image in its 11.5 MB glory, click here.)
Tumblr media
(© J-P Metsavainio)
“It took almost twelve years to finalize this mosaic image,” Metsavainio wrote on his blog, Astro Anarchy.
“The reason for a long time period is naturally the size of the mosaic and the fact that the image is very deep. Another reason is that I have shot most of the mosaic frames as individual compositions and publish them as independent artworks.
“That leads to a kind of complex image set which is partly overlapping with a lot of unimaged areas between and around frames. I have shot the missing data now and then during the years and last year I was able to publish many sub mosaic images as I got them ready first.”
Stitching the images together was a matter of matching stars and overlaying them in Photoshop, with minor tweaking between the frames to match color balance and light curves, he explained.
The resulting image is around 100,000 pixels across, made up of 234 individual mosaic panels, covering an area of sky 125 by 22 degrees.
Tumblr media
(© J-P Metsavainio)
That’s a significant swathe of the galactic plane, including about 20 million stars, and the full-size color image measuring 7,000 by 1,300 pixels is truly jaw-dropping. The colors you see represent the emission from ionized elements; hydrogen is shown in green, sulfur in red, and oxygen in blue.
“I think this is the first image ever showing the Milky Way in this resolution and depth at all three color channels,” Metsavainio told photography website PetaPixel.
Tumblr media
(© J-P Metsavainio)
It makes for a magnificently dazzling view of our home galaxy, and one that we can’t help but get lost in. If you are not sure where to start, or would like to know more about what you’re looking at, Metsavainio has helpfully posted a series of frames from the mosaic on his blog, showcasing individual nebulae.
We can also most heartily recommend visiting his portfolio to take an awe-inspiring stroll through his body of work. His 3D animations of nebulae in particular will absolutely fill you with fernweh for interstellar space travel.

2019 – The Year Of MTL Vaping
Out with the old and in with the old.. I mean mouth to lung (MTL) vaping is seeing something of a renaissance recently. Yes mouth to lung vaping is essentially what everybody does when they stop smoking as it is the same type of inhale as done with smoking. However generally since 2013 we saw people progress to direct to lung (DTL) Thats the full inhale like taking in a breath of fresh air but instead sucking on a thick cloud of flavoured vapour and blowing it out like a steam train.
Perhaps the reason behind the change is the innovation in vape technology. Mouth to lung devices have essentially bought vapours like myself back full circle to mouth to lung. I love flavour, I love not smoking yet I still depend on nicotine to keep me off cigarettes.
I’ve got a few devices in front of me from what I think are the watts hot list of mouth to lung devices.
Some are old to appeal to bargain hunters who love a great deal and some are new but they are all great in todays market where you can enjoy Nic Salt E-liquids.
The Aspire NX 30 Rover kit
First up The Aspire NX 30 Rover kit this was released with their latest tank at the time the Aspire Nautilus X. Renowned at the time for being able to vape up to a seventy percent VG e-liquid, so it gave mouth to lung vapours a bigger opportunity to enjoy a bigger range of juice which had previously only been suitable to cloud chasing tans or RDA’s. It has a 2000mAh (milli amp hour) battery and 30 watts of vaping power. It was a great kit when it came out and it’s still a great kit today, especially if you can pic it up discounted. This was ground zero for the vaping revolution, that Renaissance that re-establishment of mouth to lung vaping.
The Innokin Endura T18II
Next up we’ve got the Innokin Endura T18II This is the latest version of the already well-established and best-selling T18 line. This has changed from the original Endura T18 considerably.
It features adjustable airflow, you’ve got three different output settings, you’ve got a bigger battery life. The battery on this one is 1300 mAh. With regards to power you can pick between ten and a half, twelve and thirteen and a half watts. It also comes a very nifty magnetic top cap which is great for keeping fluff and dirt out of the mouth piece.
The Vaptio Tyro
How about another great Mouth To Lung kit. Well i’ve got the Vaptio Tyro Vaptio are a smaller manufacturer than the likes of Innokin and Aspire. it carries a large 1500mAh integrated battery. Something you will find hard to believe when you see the quality of this device. I believe it to be one of the best if not the best crossover pen style device I’ve ever used the Vaptio Tyro is capable of mouths to lung vaping or Direct To Lung depending on the coil that you put choose.
The Vaptio Tyro gives you more options to suit you, saving you from buying two devices for two styles. One of the things that is bound to go down well with the Vaptio Tyro is that you can use already well-established Aspire Nautilus coils so you can be sure of your local vape shop stocking your coils. It’s got a unique airflow adjustable section which essentially you twist the tank whilst holding the the battery part of the device and you adjust your airflow that way.
Tumblr media
The Innokin Mini Zenith D22 Kit
No scrap that.. so curve ball next up we’ve got the Innokin Zenith tank which is available as a kit called The Innokin Mini Zenith D22 Kit but.. I thought this would be a great opportunity to show you it in all it’s glory by introducing my all day carry which is what started of as the kit but I loved the tank so much I PUT IT ON MY FAVOURITE MOD. I have to say it really is my favourite (bar none) there I said it.. It’s my favourite mouth to lung tank ever in existence.
Tumblr media
The flavour is of sub own quality, the performance is superb, everything about it is stunning. Innokin sell the tank on it’s own or you can buy it with a nice matchy matchy kit when you buy the Innokin Coolfire. I’ve got mine screwed on top of a Dot75 watt by Dot Mod. I love this set up, my favourite mod and tank together. You’ve got multiple coil options available to suit your taste you have 0.5ohm 0.8ohm or a 1.6ohm I personally prefer the 0.8ohm but you do you. I like my 0.8ohm at 15 watts it’s a decent amount of vapour for a mouth to lung device but the flavour is absolutely spot-on.
The Innokin EQ
Then you’ve got pod systems I’ve got pod systems represented by both the Innokin EQ and Innokin DV pod. Both pod systems are giving mouth to lung its swagger it really is you’re getting a quality amount of vapour in a mouth to lung context. Firstly the Innokin EQ which has a 800mAh of battery life, 2ml juice capacity, and a dual power mode. The EQ has a single oversized firing button that allows the user to activate boost mode, which boosts the power output from the standard 13.5W to a boosted 15.5W.
The Innokin DV
Finally the Innokin DV now this tiny vape device has a built in 500mAh rechargeable battery. The wattage output can be changed between 12-15W in single watt increments by holding down the adjustment button. The Innokin DV does have a small battery but it is an extremely portable pod system with an amazing mesh coil that provides great flavour in a tiny package.
You’re getting small subtle stealth type devices that are easily accessible and absolutely excellent to use. Simple and effective.. Everything you need, all of these devices can be for first-time vapours and for people like myself who want something different from their sub-ohm experience.
These aren’t the only devices that have made mouth to lung hot again. There are many other great and worthy devices but this is a short list so apologies for those that didn’t make my list. Mouth to lung.. that cigarette style of vaping, is at its best when it comes to devices like this and juice options have never been so accessible. You can now use high PG or high VG e-liquid by just selecting the right coil for how you like to vape.
If you’ve made it this far thanks for sticking around, perhaps checkout some of our other posts. Maybe click on some links to interesting products you might like or watch some videos. Hope you can join me for another post real soon.

Most Effective Ways To Overcome Abstract Art 17s’s Problem | abstract art 17s
Textiles don’t anon appear to apperception back cerebration about art. But as assemblage of the artistic worlds accept noticed, the abundant heralded crossover amid design, craft, and art has chaotic adequate categories—and the reclassification of bolt art is one assurance of the change. During December’s affecting anniversary of fairs in Miami Beach, bolt were clearly absent from their accepted places in the Architecture Miami pavilion but were featured by Art Basel/Miami dealers Black Projects and Sabrina Amrani as able-bodied as at several booths in the Scope and Untitled fairs.

One of the best apparent names in bolt art is Sheila Hicks. Working back the 1950s, she pushed the average from collapsed to three-dimensional, adequate her above commissions, but her acclaim escalated afterwards she was reclassified as an artisan rather than an artisan. Her above dealer, Cristina Grajales, says, “Sheila absolutely capital Chelsea”—New York’s art district—so she helped Hicks acquisition art arcade Sikkema Jenkins & Co., which currently represents the artist.
In the 1940s, Mariska Karasz animated adornment back she acclimated it in artworks apparent at the avant-garde Bertha Schaefer Gallery. Over the accomplished several decades, the acumen of bolt art began to change as feminists like Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro fabricated artworks that acclimated bed-making and quilting. Added recently, well-publicized assignment such as Magdalena Abakanowicz’s bolt sculptures (at Richard Gray Gallery), Olga de Amaral’s abstract, gold-threaded hangings (at Nohra Haime), and the once-quotidian quilts by the women of Gees Bend, Alabama, (now in several above museums) accept presented cilia art as collectible works.

Textiles, which can be woven, knit, embroidered, or askance application any cardinal of altered counterfeit or bogus fibers, accept had a history of highs and lows in accustomed altar and admired artworks. Historians agenda that they were about the costliest and best celebrated items in Medieval or Renaissance homes, but afterwards the Industrial Revolution, aberrant was either banal or denigrated as “women’s work.” The Bauhaus relegated artists like Anni Albers to the aberrant workshop, and alike today best bolt artists are women. For best of the abreast era, although avant-garde tapestries by artists like Picasso and Matisse were apparent in art galleries, bolt were about ranked low on the authority ladder, alike in adorning arts, which persisted in because “crafts” a bottom category. That is until recently, back alloyed panels, tufting, affiliate and askance hangings, and added creations attractive annihilation like adequate bolt began assuming up in art booths as about as in the architecture galleries that aboriginal apparent them.

What precipitated the change? Dealers, bargain houses, and designers action several reasons. The aboriginal is artlessly a amount of accumulation and demand. With the admeasurement of art fairs, as AD100 artist Amy Lau credibility out, “artists can alone aftermath so abundant in a year; they can’t accumulate up with the demand.” Galleries, and their clients, are consistently attractive for new things, and as Lau sees it, “textiles are the analytic abutting step. It’s artlessly demography addition average and authoritative it adequate commercially.”

That makes acceptable faculty for addition reason: Alike the best and costliest bolt art is about added affordable than accomplished paintings. As trade-fair administrator Sandy Smith says, “There are no $200 actor cilia pieces.” And they can be added relatable, as well; according to weaver Victoria Manganiello, “Cloth is something, apparently the alone thing, that every animal on the planet interacts with every day. It’s familiar.”
Another agency is economics. As Chicago bargain abode buyer Richard Wright addendum cynically, “It sells for added money back it’s beheld in the accomplished arts frame.” And architecture banker Robert Aibel agrees. “The pieces we all ability or architecture accept consistently been art,” he says. “They’re aloof not advised as such until they become cher abundant to absorption art dealers.”

5 Highly-Actionable Google My Business Tips Every SMB Needs to Use
Long before I learned all this cool stuff about Google My Business, I spent a little over a decade working as a carpenter in Alaska.
The most important lesson I learned during my time in construction is how critical it is to choose the right tool for the job, and if you want to get clean results, you’ve got to utilize your tools in the most efficient way possible.
You’d probably agree that if you needed to drive a screw into a piece of sheetrock, you probably shouldn’t be reaching for a hammer, right?
Please tell me you wouldn’t grab a hammer.
You got a sheetrock screw gun? Okay, perfect.
Well, just like in construction, when it comes to successful inbound marketing strategies, you need to choose the right tools for the job and understand how to best employ those tools.
For local businesses, one of the best tools you have is Google My Business.
Before I teach you how to be an inbound journeyman with my top five Google My Business Tips, let’s answer two quick questions:
What is Google My Business?
Google My Business (GMB) is a free, easy-to-use tool that helps businesses manage their online presence and appearance in Google Search and Google Maps.
If you’ve ever searched for a business’ name, you’ll often see their GMB “knowledge panel,” a card containing important information customers want to know about local businesses, show up first.
If you’re on mobile, it will often be the top result before the organic results.
If you’re on desktop, it will be displayed just to the right of the organic and paid search results like this:
As you can see, the knowledge card displays tons of valuable information customers would want to know:
Business Name
Business Type
Address
Hours of operation
Phone Number
Link to website
Images
Link to Google Maps
Reviews
Overall Star Rating
Popular times to visit
Related Searches
And More
At a quick glance, you can learn a lot about a business and whether or not you want to visit there.
That is exactly the point of the tool: to give customers enough data about a business to help them determine if they want to engage with that business.
Why Should I Care About Google My Business?
The benefits of Google My Business are threefold:
Increased visibility in search
Better shopping experience for buyers
More traffic to your website, social channels, and front door
An optimized GMB page helps Google understand more about your business: who you are, what services/products you sell, where you’re located at, and what your website is (so they can crawl it for more info).
The more Google knows about you, the more types of searches your GMB listing can appear in.
In most cases, when people type the name of your business, it often displays your knowledge panel alongside your website links (if it doesn’t, try adding your location into the search).
However, when Google knows more about what you do and sell, they can help match you with other types of search queries; the most valuable of these is Google’s 3-Pack.
If you were searching for spray foam contractors in the lower peninsula of Michigan, you’d probably come across a result like this:
Which one would you pick? Why?
I picked IMPACT client, Retrofoam of Michigan because:
I’ve worked with them before. They’re great people.
This goes for all of the examples I’ll be using.
Even though they’re second, the first result doesn’t have any stars or reviews.
They have more stars and reviews than the third option.
They have business hours posted, unlike the first result.
And maybe if I moved to Michigan, they’d be the closest to me (proximity matters in a lot of local searches).
Now, if you click on their small business card, you’ll be taken to the map and their GMB knowledge panel.
Also notice you now have a full list of other contractors in the far left, and that clicking on their business card pulls up their GMB panel. So keep their attention with a helpful panel.
How do you do this though? Can we finally talk about these 5 tips? Yes, friends, we can.
1. Complete Your Business Information & Add a Description
If you’ve got a local business, I hope that you’re up-to-date on your business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, and business category at the least.
Have you ever looked a local business (like AIS) up in the map, saw that it said it was open, drove all the way there only to find the business closed?
How would that make you feel towards that company? At best you’re off to a bad start, right?
At most common, you quickly turned to their competitor.
And if you’ve got a strong sense of justice, you may have called just to tell them you’d been there, left, and found someone else.
Double check all the seemingly boring information on your Google My Business page and cross check it with the information on your website. Ensure your messaging is consistent across your channels.
That’s not even my tip; those are just things everybody should be doing already.
My tip has to do with a new feature Google announced back on March 28, 2018.
You Can Now Add Business Descriptions
Previously on GMB, the most notable way to tell Google and searchers about your business was through the Google My Business Category list of which there are over 2,300 options.
However, that doesn’t always give enough information especially if you’re in a niche business.
A local friend of mine owns a cloth diaper boutique store and eCommerce site, Arctic Baby Bottoms. She sells “natural parenting” products like cloth diapers, cloth diaper accessories, and cool high-end baby supplies and toys.
When she went to fill out her GMB information, however, she ran into a problem: there’s no category for cloth diaper store nor even diaper store.
There’s diaper service, but that’s not really true. Baby store is the closest to being right, but it still isn’t a perfect fit.
It can be frustrating when you can’t communicate to buyers who you really are and what you actually sell.
That problem has been solved with descriptions.
If you look down towards the bottom of the image above, you’ll see a section that says From Arctic Baby Bottoms. That’s the header for the business description.
Google now gives you 750 characters (~250 characters before the “Read More” separator) to describe your products, services, value, or whatever you want to communicate to your audience.
I highly suggest you make full use of every character, with a description between 730-750 characters.
Every sentence, phrase, word, character tells the buyer more about you.
Descriptions also improve your search rankings in Google.
Just as you’re able to better communicate who you are to customers, you’re able to tell Google the same information, and they can rank you for more search queries.
If you haven’t added a description yet, you should see the following card as soon as you log into your GMB listing.
2. Upload More (Better) Images
Here’s a fun fact about images on your GMB listing straight from Google:
“Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for driving directions to their location from users on Google, and 35% more clicks through to their website than businesses that don’t have photos.”
Would you prefer customers visit your location rather than your competitors’? Then add some photos.
Let’s say you were looking to buy some jewelry from a local jeweler. One jeweler’s GMB listing only shows their storefront, their logo, and their Google Street View; how likely are you to get an urge to drive over there right away?
But if you were able to see images of their showroom, see up-close pics of their display cases, and pics of the sales reps you may encounter, you’re going to feel more confident in your expectations when you visit them, right?
If you sell products, showcase your products on your GMB listing.
Here’s an example of just some of the GMB images from another IMPACT client, Burrells Jewellers in Tunbridge Wells, UK.
If you provide a service like landscaping or home remodeling, show off the work you do like our friends at Schill Landscaping in Cleveland, Ohio.
Take interior pics of your office/showroom. Take exterior pics of your building so buyers know which building is yours, or show them how big your lumber yard is. Upload pictures of your team so people know who to look for when they come in.
Other people can upload images to your Google My Business page too, and you should encourage customers to do so. Do you run a restaurant? If so, you’re probably already asking people to tag photos on Instagram and Facebook. Why not on GMB?
Fun fact, the last time I visited IMPACT headquarters in April, some of us went to Trivia Night at a regional chain, Wood-N-Tap Bar & Grill. We took a group photo and Wood-N-Tap used it on both their spring and summer menus, and for the purpose of this article, I posted the image to their GMB page.
Can you guess which one is me?
Customers who have had a great buying experience from companies often become evangelists for brands they love. Give them a great experience, and they’re more likely to promote your brand by giving you free exposure like adding photos to your GMB page, tagging your business in social posts, leaving positive reviews, and more.
If you do have users sharing photos, don’t forget to moderate them, sorting by Images By Customers.
You may find images you want removed:
Images posted by mistake that have nothing to do with your business
Poor quality images you don’t want representing your business
Images that may be offensive or should remain private
3. Respond to Reviews (All of Them)
The reviews on your GMB page can be a deciding factor in whether or not a buyer engages with your brand. Just check out some of these statistics about Local Consumer Reviews:
97% of consumers looked online for local businesses in 2017
85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations
Positive reviews make 73% of consumers trust a local business more
68% of consumers left a local business review when asked
30% of consumers say they’ve judged a business based on its responses to reviews
When making a purchase decision, people look to others for their opinions.
We all do it. And we do it often. We want to learn from the experiences of those who have purchased before us.
Did they have a positive experience or did they have a negative experience? How likely will their experience mirror our own?
In the same vein, always respond to your reviews. Positive reviews give a good impression of your business and should be easy to respond to.
But what do you do about the inevitable 1-star rating and the scathing negative review?
Many businesses shy away from them, hoping they’ll go unnoticed, or worse, they end up engaging in a public knockdown-drag out-keyboard-fight.
That’s not good for anybody -- Least of all the spectators, but you need to respond to those reviews. The people leaving them deserve it, and the people reading them need it.
If our clients at Good Life Property Management had left that review unanswered, I may have looked at that page and been left with an impression that “they’re scammers.”
Why? Because I’d only have the information from one side.
However, Good Life did an amazing job of countering the angry response. They calmly and rationally explained the reasoning behind the issue and they promised to take care of it.
Tim, the reviewer, probably also feels a little better about his situation, having gotten to vent, be heard, and get a helpful response.
For new buyers, the response from Good Life was done so well that a lot of their credibility was restored and they won me over again.
If you need a lesson on how to engage with negative criticism from buyers, I highly recommend Jay Baer’s book Hug Your Haters.
4. Use Posts to Promote Events, Offers, & Content
In June 2017, Google rolled out Google Posts to businesses.
Before Google Posts, if you wanted to share your content, you had to do it on your website and social platforms.
But now, you can have your content show up on Google Search and Google maps in your business’ knowledge panel.
So what kind of content am I talking about?
Blog articles
Company news
eBook downloads
Upcoming events
Special offers
Product promotion
Really, you can post whatever you want buyers to know about you, your products, and your services.
For example, one week from now (as of publishing this article), our team here at IMPACT will be hosting our annual IMPACT Live event.
It’s “a two-day experience where marketing leaders grow and make valuable connections while having a good time.”
We’ve got tons of amazing speakers including Bob Ruffalo, Marcus Sheridan, Dharmesh Shah, Ann Handley, David Meerman Scott, and many more marketing, sales, and business pros.
It’s going to be amazing. And if you haven’t signed up yet, you might want to visit the link above to check availability.
And because we want our audience to know we’re having this event, not only are we promoting it all over our site and social media channels, we created a Google My Business Post for it.
If you click on the post, you’ll get more information about the event and a CTA button meant to drive traffic to our website page with all of the awesome details.
Here’s another quick example of a Special Offer Post:
Or this one promoting an eBook download:
If you’re not already convinced the impact Google Posts can have on your audience, check out this quote from Google:
“Seventy percent of people look at multiple businesses before making a final choice. With Posts, you can share timely, relevant updates right on Google Search and Maps to help your business stand out to potential customers. And by including custom calls-to-actions directly on your business listing, you can choose how to connect with your customers.”
5. Upload Videos
There is no better way to attract, engage, and communicate with your buyers than through video.
Here at IMPACT, we’ve been talking non-stop about video marketing for the last couple of years.
It’s no longer what’s new in marketing. It’s here. It’s powerful. And if your business isn’t already leveraging it, you better get filming.
And once you’ve got some marketing videos to share, why not upload a few to your Google My Business page?
The ability to upload video to your GMB page rolled out just this past January 2018.
So it’s still relatively new; meaning your competitors probably aren’t leveraging it yet (can you say “huge opportunity?”)
With Google My Business, there are two ways to promote video:
Upload to your Photos (once you click the “upload” button, it’ll ask if you want to upload photos or videos)
Upload Videos as a Post
Upload Videos to Photos
Here’s an example from Circle Furniture of a video mixed in with their photos.
One problem I’ve noticed with uploading videos this way is that they don’t always go to the top of the page (which I think they should). And sometimes, like in this case, the image is a little buried in the photo album (unless you click on it like I did here).
Fortunately, as you’re scrolling through a business’ GMB photos, the videos autoplay to grab your attention.
The maximum length for the videos claim to be 30 seconds, but I’ve seen clients upload videos up to 90 seconds without issue.
Upload Videos as Posts
There’s another way to promote your videos through GMB rather than have it get buried amongst your images; you can upload a video as a post.
Remember the GMB knowledge card I shared earlier from AIS?
You may have noticed that one of the Posts was a video.
Yep, you can native upload a video as a Google Post and have it viewed directly on your GMB knowledge card.
What are you waiting for? Take some of the videos you already have and upload them to your GMB page.
It only takes a few minutes and could be the determining factor in whether your buyer chooses you over your competitor.
Final Thoughts
So there you have it: my Top 5 Google My Business Tips for Small Businesses.
You now wield one of the most powerful tools a local business can utilize to position yourself in front of new buyers and stay ahead of your competitors.
And while you’re out there hanging sheetrock with a screw gun like a pro, you can laugh at the other guys pounding those screws in with their hammers.

Alexander: What iPhone apps to use on a cellular network vs. over Wi-Fi
: You latterly wrote that iPhone customer can control whether an app makes use of a cellular network or the cellular communityHow am I able to do this iPhone , and what are the blessings?
Chris Shea, Jacksonville, Fla.
A: The most important cause to apply a c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a community in preference to a cell connection is to store cash.
cell downloads extend your phone plan’s month-to-month allotment of wireless information. If you go over your facts limit, you pay a penalty.
C084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a has no monthly data limits and is essentially a loose service. In case you use c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a at domestic, it is protected inside the monthly cost of your wired net connection. In case you use c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a in a public region, there is normally no cost.
The very best manner to manipulate whether or not your iPhone uses the mobile community or c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a is to alternate the settings for character apps. To do so, click the “settings” icon and pick out “mobile.” Scroll down to the list of apps, and turn off cell information for the ones that you want to use the only c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a. (In an effort to paintings, c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a ought to be turned on in the important settings menu.)
Which apps might you need to restrict to best? People who probably can use numerous information, which include YouTube (video) or Pandora (song). However, a or weather app that downloads little statistics might be allowed to use the cell community.
Besides controlling whether apps use cellular or c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a, you can do the same thing with a few in the back-of-the-scenes activities of your cell phone. As an instance, you can turn off cell use for Apple’s iCloud Power provider, so that your files may be subsidized up online best whilst c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a is available. you may also turn off mobile for an iPhone characteristic called “c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a help.” If left on, it mechanically switches your phone from c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a to mobile if your c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a signal becomes weak as you pass from one area to some other. you can turn off iCloud Power and c084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a help by scrolling down underneath the app list described above.
Q: Our Computer changed into ruined whilst our home changed into flooded remaining yr, However, we had been able to keep the Laptop’s outside hard Power (a Clickfree model HD701) containing years of files and pix. But our new Home windows 10 Pc can not retrieve the Drive’s sponsored-up facts. What are we able to do?
Jerry Hammons, Baton Rouge, La.
A: Your Clickfree Drive is not well suited with Windows 10, and the producer has long gone out of business, which guidelines out getting Windows 10-compatible software for the device.
But try this workaround. For your new Pc, open Report Explorer and double-click on the Clickfree Pressure, that’s called “CF Garage.” Look for a folder known as “S.” (If you do not see it, click on the “View” tab in Wireless Explorer, then click the field in front of “hidden items.”) Depending on how many backups you have made, there can be some other folder named “S” inside the first one, and every other folder named “S” inner that, and so forth. via clicking on these folders, you may eventually find numbered folders that represent individual backups. Open those numbered folders until you locate the information you want, then replica and paste it into a new folder at the “C” Power of your Pc.
If this doesn’t paintings, ask a repair save to repair the Drive’s files to a Windows 7 Pc (with which the Force is compatible), then replica them on your Home windows 10 laptop.
Common Problems Playing Games
  wifi
On the subject of playing Pc games, this is probably the most important and maximum irritating hassle someone can run into. I’ve sold video games earlier than that wouldn’t play correctly and that I had no concept why. When I have this trouble there are a few things I do to help me parent out what the problem is and the way to repair it.
A. The first component I do is pass the website systemrequirementslab.Com which has a very beneficial PC utility to tell you if you may run the game or now not. This can do a test of what hardware your computer has and examine it to the minimal and recommended specifications of the game you need to play. This will be extremely helpful because it is tough to recollect exactly what specs your computer has, and can assist pinpoint what you have to upgrade if you want to achieve this.
B. Test the drivers for your computer or pictures card. Sometimes computer peripherals will have a driving force replace, in case you do not have the proper drivers installed it can cause problems with walking positive video games.
C. Take a look at the in-game settings. Some games are excellent at optimizing the placing to what will run first-rate on your laptop, however, they do not continually get it right. If a recreation isn’t always going for walks effectively in maximum games you could bump down the graphical settings to peer if it will run efficiently.
D. Reinstall the sport. Now and again it’s far feasible that a file was given damaged When installing the game or through the years. If that is a problem it may be resolved by means of uninstalling and reinstalling the sport. most video games may be established via the Manage Panel of your PC, but if now not Once in a while you can uninstall the sport from the launcher of the game itself.
E. Sometimes regrettably there are random issues with games which can be very hard to pinpoint. If this problem arises you could touch the game corporation. Many organizations have to assist lines or boards devoted to helping people which have problems running their video games. Typically they’re quick to answer and could do something they can to assist resolve your trouble.
2. “the game runs choppy on-line!”
this is some other commonplace trouble When it comes to gaming, and this is not simply reserved for Computer gaming. Every now and then your Computer or gaming machine will run perfectly but you have got plenty of problems On the subject of on-line gaming, thankfully there are Some methods to try to restore this.
A. The primary issue to do is Test to ensure you are getting the ideal speeds out of your internet issue. you could run an online speed take a look at speed test.the internet that allows you to help you perceive your download and add speeds. If the speeds are sluggish or no longer what you’re waiting there are a pair matters you can do to try to remedy the problem before you name your internet provider.
B. When you have pace problems The first aspect I endorse doing is checking your router. On occasion pace troubles are due to a vintage or defective router. I recently had A few issues with my internet dropping and determined to check on my router. I was using a vintage router with vintage wireless technology but I did now not assume that it became causing any problems. I stopped up buying a brand new AC router and it doubled the internet velocity I used to be getting beforehand with my N router. N routers have been around for awhile and AC is the newer generation that gives more bandwidth and higher sign energy than the N routers. With such a lot of devices established to family WiFi, I think it’s miles nicely really worth the upgrade to an AC router as the entirety will run higher.
C. if you discover that the hassle is not the router and simplest your PC has velocity troubles you could
cellular
look at for any obstructions that might block the wi-fi sign. Every so often it’s far absolutely random as to what causes interference and I’ve heard of folks who had terrible speeds, moved their PC only a little bit in a special course and the whole thing labored nicely. you may also run a malware scan on your computer to make sure that an endemic isn’t consuming up your bandwidth.
D. There may be also the possibility of a faulty wireless card to your laptop. I had a computing device pic that had a wireless card that randomly stopped running, it took me a long term to perceive what the hassle become however once I did it was fixed by way of definitely buying a WiFi USB adapter. they’re not very costly and got my PC lower back online brief and easy.
E. If your trouble isn’t always remedied with any of these answers you can have to touch your net company. regrettably, On occasion, there are just problems with the inbound line and it requires a technician to pop out and fix it. Once in a while, the IP can become aware of a trouble over the telephone and determine out if the hassle is on their give up or if they need to send a technician out.
three. Different brief Recommendations To assist Pc Performance
iPhone
A. I extraordinarily suggest anyone installs an SSD on their computer. An SSD is a solid country power that may replace your present hard force. The traditional difficult drive is a transferring part tough force that spins and reads and writes statistics, while an SSD does not have shifting parts and the entirety is stored on flash memory chips. because of the way the facts is stored its miles accessed tons quicker and extra reliable than the standard HDD, they’re greater luxurious at the moment but the speed growth is well really worth the money in my opinion. I lately swapped my computer over to an SSD and it modified my boot-up time from minutes to seconds. the entirety appears to load a great deal faster and that I can’t imagine ever going returned to a normal HDD.
B. RAM memory upgrade

Neighborhood Search engine optimization Tips and Trends for Small Enterprise

Neighborhood Search engine optimization Tips and Trends for Small Enterprise
Have you claimed your Google My Enterprise listing? Do you’ve got lots of fantastic reviews on Yelp in addition to on Google? Are you showing up in the Google three-percent?
                              Search Engine Optimization
Search People
If you stated sure to all the one’s questions, congratulations. You’re a Nearby search engine optimization (Seo) rock big name. However, in case your small Commercial enterprise depends on Local clients and also you spoke back no, otherwise, you do not know, then you have some paintings ahead of you.
Nearby, organic Search engine optimization is critical to many small businesses that serve or promote to the Local populace.
Why is that? In 2015, greater Google searches took place on cell gadgets than on computers for the first time, in step with Google. And cell search is regularly Nearby search. As an instance: Whilst you’re out on the town and you Google “pizza eating place” for your cellphone, you may see close by eating places for your search results—in particular, while Google asks permission to apply your modern location.
To draw new clients, your Commercial enterprise—whether or not it’s a restaurant, a boutique, a real property corporation, or a yoga studio—needs to rank properly in Local seek queries, which include “San Francisco actual estate agent.” To be clean: organic seek rankings are those who your site gets based totally entirely on your website’s content material—not due to any Google AdWords commercials which you purchase.
Neighborhood Seo Pointers and Developments for SMBs The subsequent Seo Trends and Guidelines, accumulated from a panel discussion on the recent seek Advertising Expo West, will assist get you commenced with Local Seo.
Trend: Clickthrough (CTR) quotes affect Google rankings Clickthrough price reflects the quantity of folks who clicked a hyperlink, such as a link in a Google seek engine consequences web page (SERP), vs. the full range of those who had the opportunity to click on it. “So if a hyperlink to your internet site appears as a list on a SERP and 20 percentage of the individuals who view that SERP clicks your hyperlink, then your CTR, in that case, is 20 percent,” as seek Engine Land explains.
CTR is one in all masses of signals Google uses while identifying how to rank an internet web page for a specific keyword question, according to Chris Silver Smith, founder, and CEO of Argent Media, who spoke at the SMX West panel.
The questioning is that Google handiest wants to show customers the excellent-best content material on the primary SERP. Low CTRs can be an indication that an internet site isn’t always meeting users’ wishes or expectancies. Therefore, sites with low CTRs may not appear on the primary SERP vs. other websites with solid CTRs.
Google has been generally coy about whether CTR is certainly a rating thing. But Smith said a Google Webmaster forum consultant published that CTR is indeed a rating thing.
The lowest line for small agencies? “The influence you’re making in seek results is vital,” Smith stated, as it is able to help increase your CTR.
And how do you make a very good affect in Google Search engines like google? One way is to use established information markup, which enhances the presentation of your search end result list with a thumbnail photograph, star ratings (averaged from your critiques), and different elements, Smith said. Online promotions, compelling pics, and robust social media interest can also help pressure traffic on your website from Google seek results and increase your CTR.
Trend: Google’s latest AdWords show alternate makes it tougher to get observed in organically seek results In February, Google stopped showing AdWords textual content advertisements at the proper-hand side of computer Engines like google. Rather, Google displays as much as 4 text ads on the pinnacle of computer Search engines like google and yahoo and 3 textual content ads at The bottom.
As a result, organic seek results seem similarly down on SERPs, that’s some other purpose (along side the want to boom CTRs) why you’re natural to seek scores “want to face out more,” said Casey Meraz, founding the father of Moral Seo Consulting.
every other end result: If you’re using AdWords advertisements to get found for selected key phrases, Google’s trade increases the competition for the smaller range of top-of-the-page advert slots, stated Smith. And expanded opposition interprets into better AdWords expenses.
