Now that we are past the first and heading head-long into the second weekend of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, some of you may be happy with your bracket, and some are lamenting the fact their brackets are so much smoldering wreckage. That would be me…Kentucky and Baylor on Monday Night? What the fuck was I thinking? I’m blaming low blood sugar. Excuses aside, and no matter which side of the…

College Basketball Preview
Dukes gotta guy. 2 NIL deals is this going to be the guy who succeeds, or is he going to get fucked like the Clemson QB.
Schyer can't get psyched out, so and so never would, little emotional at the end. Push for Caple in works. Woj has gotta get outta there if he hasn't already, just be a HC which is the opposite of what a lot of coaches with good gigs should do.
Sometimes you can back fill a guy if a good coach leaves, sometimes the entire room changes.
They still call them NIL deals? I thought they were Zilch deals. Someone could break through, never know.

North Carolina State: 2023-24 Atlantic Coast Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON — It must be March.
North Carolina State capped a miraculous conference tournament run with an 84-76 win over North Carolina on Saturday night, stealing a spot in the NCAA Tournament on the eve of Selection Sunday.
The Wolfpack, which lost seven of its last nine regular-season games, arrived in Washington as the No. 10 seed in the ACC tournament, needing to win five games in five days to prolong its season. And with an upset of Duke, an overtime victory over Virginia and its smothering of the Tar Heels on Saturday night, it managed to do just that.
NC State last won the ACC tournament in 1987 under legendary coach Jim Valvano.
"Everybody expected this to be Carolina and Duke," Wolfpack coach Kevin Keatts said Friday. "Well, it's Carolina and NC State. We play pretty good basketball at NC State, too."
The Wolfpack were led by fifth-year guard DJ Horne, who racked up 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting while navigating foul trouble for much of the second half. He fouled out with a little more than a minute remaining.
DJ Burns Jr., who is listed at 275 pounds, also caused frequent issues for the Tar Heels with his bruising play in the post, finishing with 20 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
With the win, NC State injected a bit of chaos into the NCAA Tournament field less than 24 hours before the bracket is revealed. The Wolfpack is expected to join North Carolina, Duke and Clemson as the ACC teams in the field; Its win could amount to disaster for Virginia, which was among the key teams on the bubble.

Monday and Sunday night recap
Although I have already posted about this weekend's slate of games' highlights, there were two significant games that have taken place since. Florida State and LSU, a top ten matchup, was previewed as one of the best games of the year. While the game was close at half, the Seminoles absolutely took over and now look like a CFP contender. It will be an interesting race for the ACC championship, with FSU considered the favorite as of right now. Speaking of ACC, the Clemson Tigers lost an shocking upset to Duke, a game where they were heavy underdogs. An embarrasing way to start the season for the Tigers, and now the school known for basketball seems to have hope and promise for their Blue Devil football program. As I mentioned, all three of these teams are in the ACC, so while the SEC is still the dominant conference, it looks like it will be an exciting year for across the country, not just in the South East.

7 members plotting against the ACC.  The observations.
So it just broke that 7 members in the ACC have been talking secretly about how to escape the ACC and the ACC’s Grant of Rights deal.  (They signed that deal in 2016 after adding Notre Dame as an Olympic member with a football scheduling alliance.)
This means a lot, but what does it mean?
I think it says that everyone in College Football realizes that this, the last round of musical chairs, begun by the University of Texas, is underway.
Florida State started talking about how unhappy they were last year right after ESPN and FOX “overpaid” the Big 12.  FSU makes essentially the same money as the Big 12 schools.  As UCF,  $20+M less annually than their rival the University of Florida and all the crap bottom feeding schools in the SEC and Big Ten.
I think you can take FSU’s public protests as them shouting at Notre Dame,  “Hey We are no longer happy with this status quo.  If you want to jump ship, we will back your play!”
SEC
There was a rumor in realignment circles last year that the SEC’s end game move was to take total ownership of the the deep south recruiting grounds for all time by adding Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, Duke, Clemson, FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech and Tulane to form a conference with 25 members.  That would prevent the Big Ten from growing that big and having that membership would prevent the Big Ten from dictating the direction of college athletics.
It would also give the SEC near total control over recruiting, not just the dominance they have today.  It is a believable scenario from an SEC member desire perspective...but does it work financially?
Take a look at the nation’s recruiting hotbeds.
Tumblr media
It seemed a crazy rumor at the time, but this could easily be that move coming into action, with the SEC replacing Duke with a more SEC-like school in NC State is athletically more SEC in character.
If you take the 7 schools as 7 schools colluding to potentially dissolve the ACC and join the SEC as a group... as some realignment followers suspect, it is troublesome news.
ESPN
ESPN has long manipulated schools under their umbrella. ESPN doesn’t LOVE the ACC.  They love FSU, Miami, Clemson, UNC and Duke.
ESPN doesn’t want to move those schools to the SEC and overpay those schools at SEC rates --- while keeping the rest of the ACC leftovers in a hobbled conference at historic rates.
If those 7 schools are working collectively at the direction of the SEC schools for bulk admission, it is ENTIRELY possible that ESPN is the ultimate puppet master, thinking they would rather see the ACC disbanded, nullifying their agreements, and just take the SEC money and pay their cherry picked ACC superstar schools SEC money, knowing that the there will be settlements that have the ACC haves making the ACC have nots more or less whole.
Now, lets play that out.  That leaves a TON of good basketball schools to join the Big 12 as either full members or specifically basketball only members. Not Olympic-only members.  Paid to play basketball and then go the hell away.
ESPN partners with FOX to pay the Big 12 bill.  How many slots would they authorize for the Big 12?
The Big 12 is already now the nation’s premiere basketball conference.
Imagine them with Louisville, Duke, Wake Forest, UConn, Boston College, Pitt, and Syracuse?  Imagine a Big 12 where 70% of their schools make the tourney every year and where they produce 2-3 of the number one seeds!
That is a conference that can make money off basketball hand over fist to help offset their media money deficit and become the undisputed 3rd and final power conference.. The Big 12 seems to be chomping at the bit for this.
And where does the PAC stand?  Forgotten. A lesser MWC in basketball. A football conference with a total inability to recruit and a perchant for sending football teams with limited depth to get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
And the crazy thing?  It could be worse than that.   The Big 12 is talking to their media partners a lot. The Big 12 Might START by adding San Diego State and another western basketball school...Gonzaga? Arizona?  UNLV? What then for the PAC?
(I should note that it is wildly assumed by Pac leaders  that SDSU will wait until the apocalypse for an association with Stanford and Cal.  Accurate in this environment? Who can say. The train is rolling out and people tend to panic.)
That is just one of many scenarios this explosive revelation could deliver.
The bottom line:  Get off your ass, Pac-12.

Duke: 2022-23 Atlantic Coast Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
GREENSBORO – Duke basketball found itself in a familiar place Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum, cutting down nets in celebration of a 22nd ACC Tournament championship.
No program in league history has won more tournament titles than the Blue Devils, who secured a wire-to-wire 59-49 victory against Virginia on Saturday for their first ACC championship since 2019.
After a controversial loss at Virginia in February, the 21st-ranked Blue Devils (26-8) had ample motivation and never trailed against the 14th-ranked Cavaliers (25-7). It’s the ninth time Duke has raised a trophy in Greensboro.
First-year head coach Jon Scheyer is the third rookie coach to win the ACC Tournament, joining Duke’s Vic Bubas (1960) and UNC’s Bill Guthridge (1998). He’s the first person to win tournament MVP (2009) and coach a squad to a title.
Kyle Filipowski, the ACC Rookie of the Year, had 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Blue Devils. Junior captain Jeremy Roach supplied 23 points.
Kyle Filipowski was the best player on the floor in each of Duke’s three games at the ACC Tournament. On Saturday night, the 7-footer had as many points (7) as Virginia in the first 11 minutes.
After a scoreless performance that included five turnovers in Duke’s OT loss at Virginia, Filipowski had 11 points and five rebounds in the first half. The freshman turned things up in Duke’s first two games in Greensboro.
He hit 16 of his first 19 shots in the ACC Tournament, scoring 22 points against Pitt before adding 17 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high five assists against Miami. His 15 double-double performances leads all Division I freshmen
Duke’s interior defense In its rout of Clemson, Virginia scored 40 points in the paint. Things didn’t come as easily for the Cavaliers against Duke, which limited the Cavaliers to six points in the paint in the first half.
The Blue Devils made a point to keep Virginia from being comfortable on the interior, forcing the Hoos’ guards away from the rim and daring them to shoot over 7-foot-1 center Dereck Lively, who had two blocks in the first half after not recording a block in the loss at Virginia.
By the end of the first half, the Cavaliers were shooting 27% (6 of 22) and Duke had a 24-17 lead.

And Duke survives! Blue Devils beat Clemson 79-72.
The second half was better than the first half but there is still work to do before the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Devils needs to close out games when they have a big lead. They get too comfortable with their lead and start letting teams comeback. Also, free throws. Every. Free. Throw. Matters. Whether it’s early on in the game or late in the game, they’re a factor. But with today’s win, Duke advances to the next round of the ACC Tournament. Duke will face Louisville, tomorrow (Thursday, March 9th) at 2:00 PM ET on ESPN/ACCN. You can catch the game online for free at TheACC.com.
