Actions have consequences (Simon 'Ghost' Riley X GN Civilian! Spouse! Reader) Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: In a heated argument between the two of you, Simon says something he will regret for the rest of his life.
CW: Simon being an asshole, Swearing, yelling, emotional hurt, heavy angst, car accident, descriptive writing of injury, Character death (?)
Simon truly wanted to be a good husband.
But nothing ever seemed to go smoothly in his life. From his fucked-up childhood, his own demons, to his role as the infamous Ghost. Everything had to eventually come to bite him in the ass.
You, his loving spouse, had always tried to ease his pain in any way that you could. It would vary from cuddling on the couch, to taking him somewhere to lay in the grass and watch the clouds go by. However, he'd been away longer. The world beyond the walls of his cozy home made him more bitter, jaded, and cruel when he returned home.
It was today that he finally snapped.
It was a small disagreement at first, something that had already felt foreign to you. Then it escalated. The both of you kept just kept going back and forth, spitting venom at each other from a supply with an unknown source.
"All I have been trying to do this whole time is make sure that you don't have to deal with the pain alone. I'm only trying to fucking help, Simon!" You yell with hot tears streaming down your face, the grip on your shirt so tight it makes your knuckles turn white.
"Marrying you was a mistake." He snarls. The way your face twists into an expression of pure horror at his words makes him want to take it all back. A choked sob leaves your trembling body as you bolt into the direction of the door. You ignore the frantic calls of your husband as you snatch your jacket and the car keys in one swift motion, not even bothering to look back as you slam the door in his face.
You make your way to the red sports car, unlocking the vehicle before plopping yourself down in the driver's seat. There was no going back now. You start the car, glancing to the side at your shared home with Simon one last time before you hit the gas.
"Fuck…" You whimper while running a hand over your tear-stained face. Simon's words echo through your mind over and over again, the feeling of knives stabbing into your heart becoming more and more evident with each and every loop.
'Marrying you was a mistake.'
Your eyes dart to the side as you catch a flash of bright lights, the booming horn of a truck being the last thing you hear before everything goes dark.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simon sat on the couch, fingers dinging into his hair, as the tears finally stopped. It had been an hour since you stormed out the door, the look of pure horror on your face branded into his mind like the scars that decorated his body. How could he have said that to you? You, the love of his life, were the only person who had let him feel human in the times he needed it most.
"I'm such a fucking idiot." He scolded himself while smacking the sides of his head. The sound of his phone buzzing on the coffee table was the only thing that brought him out of his self-pity. He reached out to the obnoxious device that tried to get his attention, turning it around to find the word 'unknown' flashing readily on the screen.
Alarm bells began to go off in his brain as he pressed down to answer the call. A sweet elderly voice was greeting him from the other side. "Hello? Is this Mr. Riley? I am calling from the Clementine Churchill Hospital." The moment the word 'hospital' registered in Simon's brain, he immediately froze.
"Sir?" The voice on the other side called again, to which this time he did respond. "Yes, you are speaking to him. Why did you call me?" Deep down, he already knew why. "Your spouse has been in a car accident. Do you have the possibility to come over?"
Simon's heart stopped beating.
The time between him rushing to the hospital and finally reaching your room was all but a blur to him. He now sat at your bedside, tears streaming down his face as he looked at the damage he had caused. You looked so frail, all wrapped up in bandages, with all different types of tubes and machinery hooked up to you.
There was only one thought that crossed Simon's mind at this very moment. It was all his fault.
If he hadn't yelled at you, if he hadn't let you walk out of that door, you would've been cuddled up on the couch together. You would be smiling at him, those beautiful eyes he came to love looking up at him with pure joy when you told him about your day. But you weren't. You were lying here, fighting for your life. All because of him.
"Sweetheart? I don't know if you can hear me… but I-" Simon had to swallow as he felt his world crumble around him. "I'm so sorry, baby. I should've never allowed myself to say something so fucking horrible to you." Hot tears streamed down his face as he reached out to caress your cheek. "Please… please don't go. I can't-I can't lose anyone else." Simon wept as he held onto your hand, his lips brushing against your bandaged knuckles.
"Please…" He kept begging. He was hoping that someone, anyone, would hear his plea not to take you away from him.

As we reflect on Sir Winston Churchill’s extraordinary life, it’s essential to recognise the vital role his family played in shaping and supporting him through the challenges of leadership. While Churchill was a towering figure on the world stage, at home he was a husband, father, and grandfather—roles that were not always easy to balance alongside his demanding political career.
His marriage to Clementine was a partnership built on mutual respect, love, and unwavering support. She was his confidante, his advisor, and often the one who helped him weather the darkest days of his career.
Their five children—Diana, Randolph, Sarah, Marigold, and Mary—were raised in an environment where their father’s dedication to public service often took precedence, but his love for them was deep. His youngest daughter, Mary Soames, later reflected that despite his many responsibilities, Winston was an affectionate father.
Churchill’s relationship with his children wasn’t without its difficulties. His political career placed immense pressure on family life, particularly with his son, Randolph, with whom Churchill often clashed.
In many ways, Churchill's expectations of his children were as high as those he placed on himself, and this occasionally led to friction, particularly as Randolph attempted to follow in his father's footsteps.
As a grandfather, Churchill had the opportunity to embrace family life with a greater sense of ease. He adored spending time with his grandchildren and often indulged them with his wit and playfulness.
His granddaughter, Celia Sandys, has recounted how much joy Churchill found in family gatherings at Chartwell, where he could briefly escape the weight of his responsibilities.
This close-knit, though occasionally turbulent, family life is a testament to Churchill’s humanity, reminding us that even history's greatest figures are, at their core, shaped by the people closest to them.

The statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Parliament Square - 1st November 1973.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth stands alongside Churchill's widow Clementine, The Baroness Spencer-Churchill as the 12 foot high sculpture by Ivor Roberts-Jones is unveiled.
Our Queen held a deep respect and fondness of Churchill. The very young Princess Elizabeth first met Churchill at Balmoral in 1928. In a letter to his wife, Winston described the young Princess as having, "an air of authority and reflectiveness astonishing in an infant."
When Churchill first became Prime Minister during WWII, he and George VI developed a very close friendship. The weekly 30 minute Audience often included lunch and sometimes lasted for several hours.
When Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, Churchill was again Prime Minister. I am sure Winston gave our new Queen a lot of helpful advice and encouragement, as Her Majesty grieved the loss of her father, and took on her role as Sovereign.

"Di cosa hai parlato per cosí tanto tempo?", chiese Sir Winston alla moglie Clementine, che un giorno si mise a parlare con uno spazzino.
Lei rispose: "Molti anni fa quell'uomo era follemente innamorato di me".
Churchill sorrise ironicamente: "Quindi oggi saresti potuta essere la moglie di uno spazzino?"
"Oh no amore mio - precisò Clementine - se l'avessi sposato ora sarebbe lui il Primo Ministro!".

Reading about Stanley Baldwin led me, as serendipity does, to the Mitford sisters, whom, coincidentally, I not long ago started listening to an audiobook about (Laura Thompson’s “The Six: The Lives of The Mitford Sisters" - US title is "Take Six Girls..." Also, see enjoyable interview with Thompson here). The link between them is the gathering of several sisters with remarkable societal connections: Baldwin's mother, Louisa, was one of the famous 19th century MacDonald sisters (I mentioned them in the blog years ago - link here - in a post featuring an exquisite painting of a woman reading a book, comfortably ensconced in a beautifully decorated home). Two of the MacDonald women married famous artists, one of them being Sir Edward John Poynter, painter of said portrait, while Alice's marriage spawned famous author, Rudyard Kipling.
The Mitford sisters were 20th century; the eldest, Nancy, ("the Novelist"), was born in 1904, the youngest, Deborah, ("the Duchess") was born 16 years later. There was a brother, too, as can be seen in the photograph above. The family were supremely well-connected in "high society". Related to Winston Churchill through his wife, Clementine, was the father, David Mitford, 2nd Baron Redesdale - he and the British Prime Minister's wife were cousins. Deborah became close friends with US President John F. Kennedy and his family, and Jessica, living in California, knew his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson. All the siblings had fascinating, though somewhat unenviable, lives and with Unity ("the Nazi") the story takes a particularly tragic turn.
She moved to Germany to get close to Adolf Hitler, which whom she had become obsessed, and managed to work her way into his inner circle. Apparently, he was quite smitten with her. She shot herself in the head when Britain declared war, but survived with brain damage, dying a few years later from meningitis due to complications regarding the bullet still lodged inside her (age: 33). Unity's middle name was Valkyrie (in Norse mythology, a valkyrie was one of twelve handmaidens of the god of war, Odin, who guided the souls of the battle-slain warriors of their choosing to the great hall, Valhalla) and she was born in the town of Swastika, Ontario, in Canada, where her family had gold mines - it's as though her fate appeared to have written itself. According to Diana Mosley’s biographer, Jan Dalley: "Hitler was extremely superstitious, and he believed that Unity was sort of sent to him, it was destined", and he described the young blonde as "a perfect specimen of Aryan womanhood."*
Diana married British fascist Sir Oswald Mosley, with whom she was interned at Holloway Prison between May 1940** and November 1943. She had just given birth to her fourth child, Max Mosley, in the April of that year, and he and his older brother Alex were not included in the internment. Meanwhile, Jessica, (noted in the photograph as her nickname 'Decca') became a Communist and was known as "the red sheep" of the family, and Nancy, a moderate socialist, worked in London during the Blitz and informed on her fascist siblings to the British authorities.*** By comparison, Pamela was the quietest sister, often referred to as "the rural one", but still has a colourful biography of her own, by marrying a bisexual, womanising millionaire and being rumoured herself to having been involved in a long-term relationship with a woman.
Unsurprisingly, reams have been written about this extraordinary family and I have much more to learn. Their lives were so fantastical, almost the stuff of soap operas or melodramas, seemingly unreal; one writer, Anthony Haden-Guest, sums up their existence well as being one "even the most shameless pulp novelist would hardly dare invent."
*Source: Wikipedia cites a Channel 4 documentary called 'Hitler's British Girl' from 2007.
**Source: Wikipedia, dates vary slightly on related pages. I think it was May for Mosley and June for Diana.
***Source: "Nancy Mitford spied on sisters", article by Paul Reynolds, BBC News, 2003. Cited on Wikipedia.
Needs checking. Further reading required.
Disclaimer: I should write all my posts on a Word document first and wait a while before publishing, to ensure I've got the thing edited and fully formed, but I don't. Patience is not my forté.
