Indian Engineers Tackle Water Shortages with Star Wars Tech in Kerala https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/indian-engineers-tackle-water-shortages-with-star-wars-tech-in-kerala/
When a severe water shortage hit the Indian city of Kozhikode in the state of Kerala, a group of engineers turned to science fiction to keep the taps running.
Like everyone else in the city, engineering student Swapnil Shrivastav received a ration of two buckets of water a day collected from India’s arsenal of small water towers.
It was a ‘watershed’ moment for Shrivastav, who according to the BBC had won a student competition four years earlier on the subject of tackling water scarcity, and armed with a hypothetical template from the original Star Wars films, Shrivastav and two partners set to work harvesting water from the humid air.
“One element of inspiration was from Star Wars where there’s an air-to-water device. I thought why don’t we give it a try? It was more of a curiosity project,” he told the BBC.
According to ‘Wookiepedia’ a ‘moisture vaporator’ is a device used on moisture farms to capture water from a dry planet’s atmosphere, like Tatooine, where protagonist Luke Skywalker grew up.
This fictional device functions according to Star Wars lore by coaxing moisture from the air by means of refrigerated condensers, which generate low-energy ionization fields. Captured water is then pumped or gravity-directed into a storage cistern that adjusts its pH levels. Vaporators are capable of collecting 1.5 liters of water per day.
If science fiction authors could come up with the particulars of such a device, Shrivastav must have felt his had a good chance of succeeding. He and colleagues Govinda Balaji and Venkatesh Raja founded Uravu Labs, a Bangalore-based startup in 2019.
Their initial offering is a machine that converts air to water using a liquid desiccant. Absorbing moisture from the air, sunlight or renewable energy heats the desiccant to around 100°F which releases the captured moisture into a chamber where it’s condensed into drinking water.
The whole process takes 12 hours but can produce a staggering 2,000 liters, or about 500 gallons of drinking-quality water per day. Uravu has since had to adjust course due to the cost of manufacturing and running the machines—it’s just too high for civic use with current materials technology.
“We had to shift to commercial consumption applications as they were ready to pay us and it’s a sustainability driver for them,” Shrivastav explained. This pivot has so far been enough to keep the start-up afloat, and they produce water for 40 different hospitality clients.
Looking ahead, Shrivastav, Raja, and Balaji are planning to investigate whether the desiccant can be made more efficient; can it work at a lower temperature to reduce running costs, or is there another material altogether that might prove more cost-effective?
They’re also looking at running their device attached to data centers in a pilot project that would see them utilize the waste heat coming off the centers to heat the desiccant.

okay so I wanted to show @coffee-mage-sans-caffeine some terrible field Beagle stacks, so that they could see how uncomfortable the dogs look, and therefore I went hunting for field rabbit beagle kennels.
I turned up one pet "rare color" breeder and one that turned out to be a breed-specific article from a fucking content mill. Which: Gross. But the third one actually was a field rabbit-hunting beagle breeder, one who had the most good ol' boy [appreciative] blog description of his goals I've seen in a very long time:
Woodpont Beagles are a pack of dual-purpose (show and field bred) hunting hounds located in Southern Ohio, USA.  Some of our female lines now stretch back as many as 16 generations, spanning nearly 40 years.  Hounds from this kennel have been very successful in the past at field trials and shows, although the primary focus the past 20 years has been on pack work after cottontail rabbit or snowshoe hare.
[...]
Feel free to contact us if this sounds like the type of hound for you.  Not everyone likes the same kind of beagle.  If your interest is field trials, or showing, you may want to keep looking.  If you want good, honest hounds for pack work or gunning, these just may suit you.  Puppies occasionally available.
Like, you know that is an old white man with the most rural of backgrounds and interests. His philosophy is fantastic, mind you, the dogs themselves are a blend of conformation and working beagle lines with the goal of maintaining the best of both worlds, if I wanted a beagle or to hunt rabbits I'd be on that man's doorstep in a heartbeat. I'm reading his stuff and I'm watching very carefully, and I see a post title and pre-emptively flinch:
Tumblr media
Immediately what pops into my head is QAnon and hideous right-wing politics have invaded all kinds of circles over the years, and look I was starting to really like this guy, his opinions about working hounds are kickass, and oh no he's going to take time out of his day to make it clear he thinks people like me are scum--what does it read--oh no, oh no, what is it gonna say--
Things You Will Not See Here
Hounds with No Show Blood
Hounds with No Field Blood
Hounds in above ground kennels (i.e., raised on wire rather than being reared on the ground. always. no stacking kennels or god forbid runs.) ...
Yeah. Okay. I can live with this. It's a website straight out of 2013 (or 2003) rather than 2023. And oh, what a breath of fresh air the blog is!

truly just SUCH a typical tumblr experience but like.
Familiar Tumblr Name makes a post that's like: 'you know how fast fashion perpetuates itself by selling us clothing that gets dingy and grody really fast, so we have to replace it yearly?'
me: uh, no, actually—historically i've found that the few fast fashion pieces i acquired long outstayed their welcome, and were perfectly wearable long after i was heartily sick of them! but go on, i guess
FTN: 'let me tell you about this traditional domestic wisdom (implied: that's been lost because of, uh, capitalism) that will fix this problem (that you, too, definitely have) for you!'
me, googling: okay so this residue that FTN said was somehow a Fast Fashion thing is apparently generally caused by like. fabric softener and/or hard water. using discount detergents that skimp on active ingredients. using too much detergent so it doesn't wash out. letting your bedding go too long between washes. letting your washer go too long between cleans. etc. anyway. lots of specific factors here, many of which may in fact not apply to you in particular!
but like. why get specific when instead we could assert You Know This Problem, Right? This Lost Traditional Wisdom Will Definitely Help You Personally!!
#just like. makes me mad as rhetoric bc like. *i* can evaluate yr Dramatic Tumblr Post critically and do independent research abt it#and determine how much of it applies to me#and like. the answer is: basically none but it's a good reminder to clean the washing machine‚ thx#but like. there are loads of ppl in the notes just like. nodding along very wide-eyed#to whom this ALSO may not be applicable but who have lapped up yr sloppy demagoguery#and it's just like. [FTN] admits *in this post* that they don't actually know all the ins and outs of this#and it's just like. then probably you shouldn't be climbing onto your soapbox to explain it to people just yet!!#and telling people to get Righteously Angry that this has been Kept From Them#anyway. extremely specific subtweet and honestly the consequences of blindly taking OP's advice would probably not be too bad#but it's just like. i get really frustrated with these bloggers who want to Dispense Advice#but aren't actually experts themselves‚ don't provide any citations for their assertions‚ and claim that things are Universally Applicable#which is just. never true!! people's situations vary!!!#and like. if everyone were equipped to critically evaluate this shit it'd be fine‚ probably#but they're not! people are like 'oh wow you sound confident‚ okay‚ information integrated into my worldview now!'#and it's just like. i realize the subject matter here is relatively low-stakes but it's like. the KIND of rhetoric here is. weird.#very like. There's Been a Conspiracy and You Should Believe Me Because I Sound Confident and Friendly and Like I'm On Your Side.#Reject the Innovations of Capitalism. Retvrn to the Old Ways.#and it's just like. hm what politicians does that remind me of!#anyway. sorry for this very vehement very specific subtweet i just. idk. genuinely think this strain of tumblr demagoguery is pernicious#and like. lots of it is perpetrated by liberals!! most of it ime! but it's the same damaging dynamic even so

Unearthing the Power of Soil Remediation: A Promising Path towards Environmental Sustainability
The health of our planet is intricately linked to the quality of its soil, an aspect that is often overlooked. Soil pollution presents a significant environmental concern, affecting agricultural productivity, water quality, and ultimately, human health. However, the innovative field of soil remediation holds the key to reclaiming contaminated land and fostering a sustainable future.
Soil remediation, a sector of environmental science, focuses on purifying and revitalizing the soil. It encompasses various techniques to remove harmful pollutants, such as heavy metals, petroleum products, pesticides, and more, from contaminated soil. The ultimate aim is to restore the soil to a state where it can once again support healthy growth and biodiversity.
There are several methods of soil remediation, each tailored to the type and extent of soil contamination.
1. Excavation and Disposal
As a direct approach, this method involves physically removing the contaminated soil and disposing of it in designated landfills. Although it's an immediate solution, it merely transfers the contamination issue from one place to another, leading to concerns about its environmental sustainability.
2. Soil Washing
This technique uses water, sometimes mixed with other substances, to wash away contaminants. It's particularly effective for treating soils contaminated with heavy metals or certain kinds of organic pollutants. However, the process requires treatment of the resulting washwater to avoid secondary contamination.
3. Bioremediation
One of the most promising soil remediation strategies, bioremediation, employs natural processes to clean up contaminated soil. Specific microorganisms or plants (phytoremediation) are used to absorb, break down, or immobilize contaminants. This method is eco-friendly and holds great potential for large-scale applications.
4. Thermal Desorption
Thermal desorption involves heating soil to evaporate the pollutants, which are then collected and treated separately. This process is ideal for soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds, but it requires substantial energy input.
Soil remediation's significance extends far beyond environmental preservation. Healthy soil is critical for a functioning ecosystem, contributing to plant growth, water filtration, and climate regulation. Moreover, with the escalating global population, the need for arable land is at an all-time high. Through soil remediation, previously unusable land can be restored, strengthening food security and promoting sustainable land use.
Simultaneously, soil remediation helps protect groundwater resources. Soil acts as a natural filter, and contaminants present in the soil can leach into groundwater over time, posing serious health risks. By removing these pollutants, soil remediation safeguards our water supply.
In the grand scheme of climate change, soil remediation plays a pivotal role. Soil holds three times as much carbon as the atmosphere. Techniques like bioremediation not only remove contaminants but also improve soil health, increasing its capacity to store carbon and thereby helping to mitigate climate change.
In conclusion, soil remediation is not merely a sector of environmental science; it is a tool of hope for our planet. It embodies the mantra of "heal the soil, heal the planet," and underscores our responsibility to protect the environment. With continued research and technological advancements in soil remediation techniques, we can make strides towards a sustainable future.
Let's invest in soil remediation - for our health, for our food, and for our planet.

Red Asphalt were a high school "straight edge" band in Southern California - San Clemente specifically. In my mind, they're notable because they're a piece of the musical journey of George Carpenter of The Clog. The Clog's 7" dominated my listening in 2019. Back then I mentioned how The Clog sounded like a cross between Ty Segall and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.
Red Asphalt definitely has a similar feel. The cassette (mastered by Mikey Young) is a bit of auditory whiplash - going from sludgey screamo to lo-fi indie (think Pavement), to gentle picking. Really, this sounds like this could have been an early Flying Nun band (listen to "J2" - sounds like it could have been The Clean). Finally, I'll throw in The Urinals/100 Flowers as a Southern California reference point.
San Francisco based tape label Discontinuous Innovation just released this cassette in April 2023. The label has an impressive catalogue.
