uhhh so the number four is associated with death in certain cultures, including japanese, which is fitting for the butcher’s son, yes but just remember neil was supposed to be number three and jean was supposed to be number four ,and in every draft but one jean dies. he is symbolically saved from that fate by dodging the number four (being given, instead, the number three which represents REBIRTH of all things - i made a whole post about that if ur curious) because it means he was never marked for death. so in this draft, where he’s number three, but was supposed to be number four, he comes so close to death - to the point where renee doesn’t know how he’s still alive - because he was supposed to die, doomed by the narrative, but that number three saves him. that number three represents resurrection, and so he doesn’t die like he was supposed to. because he’s not number four, he’s number three. he comes back. he transforms, he heals. he becomes number 29 (i will eventually make a post about jean and the 29)
neil, though, was marked for death. he had the number four tattooed on him, and he goes through his own narrative believing he will die by the end of it. his survival, however, is foreshadowed in the very moment neil thinks he’s about to die - when he is kidnapped. lola burns the number four - the signifier of death - off his face, leaving him scarred, yes, but not marked for death anymore. and so he lives. and guess what: the number 10 represents the start of a new chapter, that one cycle is coming to an end and a new life is starting, one that you’ve worked hard for. so for the number four to be burned off of neil, that tells us neil is going to live. and when neil becomes neil legally, he settles into the number 10 properly. and his new life begins.
#god this was difficult to write bc i have so much more to say about this but i just can’t word it#like i can’t make myself make sense#so i’ll leave it here lol#aftg number analysis#number 4#number 10#neil josten#jean moreau#aftg#all for the game#the number 10 also represents completeness which is seen as neil completes the team allowing them to get to championships#and the number four also represents balance which neil attempts to achieve on the team#by uniting the upper class men and the monsters#i still have so much more to say but i’ll leave it here#stay tuned for more unhinged number analysis#i have to say when i first read the books at 16 i got SO HAPPY when lola burned the four off neil bc HE NO LONGER IS MARKED BY DEATH SO#HE’s GOING TO SURVIVE THIS#but i’ve not seen anyone else point it out

It’s such a Minamoto brother thing to stand in the foreground in black and white while their school mystery bf stands in the back in color
(I love how these shots parallel each other (if someone has an idea why they do let me know because honestly I don’t get why the anime did this or why there in black and white))(if you look lose enough it’s literally the same camera shine across both shots)
#tbhk#toilet bound hanako kun#jshk#jibaku shounen hanako kun#akane aoi#teru minamoto#kou minamoto#sousuke mitsuba#mitsukou#terukane#my guess to the black and white would be maybe it represents the black and white thinking of the minamoto clan that supernaturals are all#all bad and Akane and Mitsuba are in color cause they are supernaturals and it’s like foreshadowing Akane also??#but honestly idk#the scene for Mitsuba and Kou is clearly supposed to be when Kou realised Mitsuba was#in his class and stuff#I’m still salty they put Akane in the theme like they were gonna the clock keeper arc and then said nah

I wanna get around to doing some small story beats for the "Main Six Takes Manhattan" story. It'd be a good chance for me to play around with different art styles too.
I'm really excited about this story too because it'd be splitting everyone up into pairs for their own little arc.
Rarity attends a fashion showcase in upper Manhattan, with April-Jacqueline in tow as her "attendant." The two get swept up in industry drama as they uncover the abuse faced by amateur designer Carol Cho under the American fashion house "Polomare."
Pinkie and Thea head to Harlem for a rent party, hosted by Thea's city friends. Despite Thea's protestations, Pinkie can't help but be the life of the party as its tenants and musicians attempt to raise enough money to fight their landlords and demand housing justice.
Dash and Félicie navigate NYC's transportation system to go to a ball game: the New York Wonderbolts vs. the Washington Senators. While Dash meets her heroes, Félicie can't help but feel homesick and smothered by the big city.
#i have 3 major art projects going on at once tho rn#the au/ko crisis for a writing class/my storyboarding job#so things are slower going#delete later#personal#last story is def the weakest. i definitely wanna set up some solidarity between spitfire and dash (as colonized people)#i need to find a strong political/historical angle for that because each arc's theme is racial solidarity and allyship#rarity and carol represent chinese/korean solidarity (especially given both groups would become victims of imperialism during that era)#and pinkie and thea represent hispanic/black solidarity (with a specific focus on housing and redlining)

does anyone think about the fact that the first thing rick notices about polly is that he wears a floral suit and then later on when he gets the blackwater infection (which shows who u really are yadda yadda) it makes him grow flowers on his body that change colour to show what emotion he’s feeling (which he tries to pick off).
and also that the first thing polly notices about rick is that he seems used to fire, and the fire polly is made of represents What He Really Is and becomes visible when he gets angry/otherwise cant control his emotions (and is something he puts effort into trying to hide).
yeah me neither 👍

actually i'm still thinking about the moral orel finale.
he has a cross on his wall. do you know how much i think about that bc it's a lot.
a lot of stories ((auto)biographical or fictional) centering escape from abusive/fundamentalist christianity result in the lead characters leaving behind christianity entirely. and that makes complete sense! people often grow disillusioned with the associated systems and beliefs, and when it was something used to hurt them or something so inseparable from their abuse that they can't engage with it without hurting, it makes total sense that they would disengage entirely. and sometimes they just figure out that they don't really believe in god/a christian god/etc. a healthy deconstruction process can sometimes look like becoming an atheist or converting to another religion. it's all case by case. (note: i'm sure this happens with other religions as well, i'm just most familiar with christian versions of this phenomenon).
but in orel's case, his faith was one of the few things that actually brought him comfort and joy. he loved god, y'know? genuinely. and he felt loved by god and supported by him when he had no one else. and the abuses he faced were in how the people in his life twisted religion to control others, to run away from themselves, to shield them from others, etc. and often, orel's conflicts with how they acted out christianity come as a direct result of his purer understanding of god/jesus/whatever ("aren't we supposed to be like this/do that?" met with an adult's excuse for their own behavior or the fastest way they could think of to get orel to leave them alone (i.e. orel saying i thought we weren't supposed to lie? and clay saying uhhh it doesn't count if you're lying to yourself)). the little guy played catch with god instead of his dad, like.. his faith was real, and his love was real. and i think it's a good choice to have orel maintain something that was so important to him and such a grounding, comforting force in the midst of. All That Stuff Moralton Was Up To/Put Him Through. being all about jesus was not the problem, in orel's case.
and i know i'm mostly assuming that orel ended up in a healthier, less rigid version of christianity, but i feel like that's something that was hinted at a lot through the series, that that's the direction he'd go. when he meditates during the prayer bee and accepts stephanie's different way to communicate, incorporating elements of buddhism into his faith; when he has his I AM A CHURCH breakdown (removing himself from the institution and realizing he can be like,, the center of his own faith? taking a more individualistic approach? but Truly Going Through It at the same time), his acceptance (...sometimes) of those who are different from him and condemned by the adults of moralton (stephanie (lesbian icon stephanie my beloved), christina (who's like. just a slightly different form of fundie protestant from him), dr chosenberg (the jewish doctor from otherton in holy visage)). his track record on this isn't perfect, but it gets better as orel starts maturing and picking up on what an absolute shitfest moralton is. it's all ways of questioning the things he's been taught, and it makes sense that it would lead to a bigger questioning as he puts those pieces together more. anyway i think part of his growth is weeding out all the lost commandments of his upbringing and focusing on what faith means to him, and what he thinks it should mean. how he wants to see the world and how he wants to treat people and what he thinks is okay and right, and looking to religion for guidance in that, not as like. a way to justify hurting those he's afraid or resentful of, as his role models did.
he's coming to his own conclusions rather than obediently, unquestioningly taking in what others say. but he's still listening to pick out the parts that make sense to him. (edit/note: and it's his compassion and his faith that are the primary motivations for this questioning and revisal process, both of individual cases and, eventually, the final boss that is christianity.) it makes perfect sense as the conclusion to his character arc and it fits the overall approach of the show far better. it's good is what i'm saying.
and i think it's important to show that kind of ending, because that's a pretty common and equally valid result of deconstruction. and i think it cements the show's treatment of christianity as something that's often (and maybe even easily) exploited, but not something inherently bad. something that can be very positive, even. guys he even has a dog he's not afraid of loving anymore. he's not afraid of loving anyone more than jesus and i don't think it's because he loves this dog less than bartholomew (though he was probably far more desperate for healthy affection and companionship when he was younger). i think it's because he figures god would want him to love that dog. he's choosing to believe that god would want him to love and to be happy and to be kind. he's not afraid of loving in the wrong way do you know how cool that is he's taking back control he's taking back something he loves from his abusers im so normal
#i had a really big fundie snark phase a year or two ago so that's part of like. this. but im still not used to actually talking about#religious stuff so if it reads kinda awkwardly uhh forgive me orz idk#maybe it sounds dumb but i like that the message isn't 'religion is evil'. it easily could have been. but i think the show's points about#how fundie wasp culture in particular treats christianity and itself and others would be less poignant if they were like. and jesus sucks#btw >:] like. this feels more nuanced to me. i guess there's probably a way to maintain that nuance with an ultimately anti-christian#piece of media but i think it'd be like. wayy harder and it's difficult for me to imagine that bc i think a lot of it would bleed out into#the tone. + why focus on only These christians when They're All also bad? so you'd get jokes about them in general#and i think that's kinda less funny than orel and doughy screaming and running from catholics lsdkjfldksj#i think the specificity makes it more unique and compelling as comedy and as commentary. but that's just me#like moralton represents a very particular kind of christian community (namely a middle class fundie wasp nest)#you're not gonna be able to get in the weeds as much if you're laughing at/criticizing all christians. but they accomplish it so thoroughly#and WELL in morel and i think that's because it chose a smaller target it can get to dissect more intimately. anyway#moral orel#orel puppington#(OH also when i say wasp here i mean WASP the acronym. as in white anglo-saxon protestsant. in case the term's new to anyone <3)#maybe it's also relevant to say that i'm kindaaaaaaaa loosely vaguely nonspecifically christian. so there's my bias revealed#i was never raised like orel but i like to think i get some of what's going on in there y'know. in that big autistic head of his#but it's not like i can't handle anti-christian/anti-religious media/takes. i'm a big boy and also i v much get why it's out there yknow#christianity in specific has a lot of blood on its hands from its own members and from outsiders and people have a right to hate it for tha#but religion in all its forms can be positive and i appreciate the nuance. like i've said around 20 times. yeah :) <3#(<- fighting for my life to explain things even though my one job is to be the explainer)

Spoilers ❗️
I sometimes think about the little details of Mithrun’s time as a dungeon lord. When he became dungeon lord he wasn’t at his best, so it was probably a whirlwind of emotions and desires.
Kind of like when Marcille became a dungeon lord and she didn’t really clock how weird things were getting. But Marcille wasn’t a dungeon lord for long, Mithrun spent five years in that position. Once he calmed down, did he look around like ‘wtf? Why is my girlfriend a snake?’
Obviously we know that at some point he realized that things were weird
The mimics/illusions of his friends disappeared, his physical state was worsening. He had to realize that something was happening, he just didn’t know what.
Anyway I have nothing profound to say actually. I just wonder if he ever looked at Snake Girlfriend and wondered what was happening there. Did he.. like it?
I headcanon that he didn’t love her. Kabru is narrating the story and is trying to make it seem more appealing, so he says ‘the woman he loved’ but like..
That is not the face of a man in love. The picture and the text tell two different stories. Which is literally what’s happening in canon as, again, Kabru tells the story in a way that will best appeal/make a good lesson. Kabru has to know the truth, but he’s not narrating it truthfully.
She’s not in the bed with him, he’s not looking at her. Honestly I think he just wanted to possess what his brother had/what his brother wanted
But anyway, so a snake.. What was his daily life like? What does the life of an established dungeon lord look like?
He’s got his friends and the things he does to defend/upkeep the dungeon. I just can’t get over THE SNAKE GIRLFRIEND
I know she’s a representation of his mental/emotional state. I know. She was probably so perfect and wonderful because that’s what Mithrun wanted and the goat was fully capable of giving him that.
It’s just…
THIS GUY’S A MONSTER FUCKER!!!!!!
#yeah I have nothing profound to say#I’m just thinking about Mithrun x my oc and her laying awake at night like… a snake?#she looks at Mithrun beside her and she’s like is there something you want to share with the class?#I mean genuinely I understand what the lamia represents but#I just#idk#mithrun#dungeon meshi spoilers

One of the things that it's always interesting to see in a gothic noble is what the villain, or the antagonist represents in the narrative as a whole.
The Gothic is a romantic literary response to the historical, sociological, and political contexts of the the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It's a look through the ruin, the passionate, the bigoted, the decaying, and the irrational rationality.
It's an explanation as to why it's crucial to the narrative of why Dracula is a count, why Jonathan is an inexperienced worker, and why there is so much emphasis on the locals.
"Because your peasant is at heart a coward and a fool! Those flames only appear on one night; and on that night no man of this land will, if he can help it, stir without his doors. And, dear sir, even if he did he would not know what to do. Why, even the peasant that you tell me of who marked the place of the flame would not know where to look in daylight even for his own work. Even you would not, I dare be sworn, be able to find these places again?"
How much contempt, and underlining hatred can one fit in a single paragraph that bordelines on a monologue? Dracula truly holds true resentment towards the locals of Transylvania for daring to try, and defend themselves against him.
He doesn't call them locals, citizens, not even commoners, but peasants. A word that not only signals the kind of social hierarchy that Dracula benefits the most (notice how he also included Jonathan in the social class at the end), but also why he is shown so angry despite Jonathan asking a simple question.
The locals of Transylvania had commited the worst crime in the eyes of the Count, the peasants dared to revolt against their "master" in order to keep themselves alive instead of baring their necks for the slaughter. Even with all of the fear that Dracula has sowed in the heart of the locals, to the point that they obey all of his orders, it's still not enough for him. That fear it's not enough for Dracula because it lacks the concrete submission of his old days as an actual noble class.
The locals of Transylvania fear him for his power and his wealth, but they lack the class mentality that would truly put them under Dracula, and that is eating the Count alive. He calls them fools while they fill their streets with protection wards and put rosaries around their necks, he calls them cowards while we have read how everyone around Jonathan risked the Count's wrath to protect him.
We Transylvanian nobles love not to think that our bones may lie amongst the common dead.
The Count hates the old innkeepers, the coachman, and the passengers for daring to rebel against him, even if he is still the unliving cause of their suffering.
Hell, it's heavily implied that all of that is still not enough to fully stop Dracula, and yet he is still so angry. There is nothing that the aristocratic nobility hates more than the mere vision of how the people they deem beneath them act together to stop their abuse.
#The Count is a complex gothic character in regards all of the stuff he represents both in the good watsonian and the bigoted doylist sense#What do vampires represent? The dying aristocracy trying to hold their fleeting power as the social system shifts in a new century#While still bleeding the working class under them dry#And Dracula as a conqueror a noble and an older experienced man represents that perfectly#dracula daily#dracula#count dracula#jonathan harker

Touya giving tsukasa a free pass for literally anything is so funny to me. He has zero idea tsukasa 1) is frequently in trouble at school 2) will break the rules whenever he wants despite claiming to be a responsible mature rule follower. I think this is also true for saki. I think the tenmas could purposefully burn down all of Tokyo and touya would go “I’m sure they had a good reason :)”. He doesn’t say shit to tsukasa about failing a class in LSH but he gives his friends the “I’m so disappointed in you” treatment… an talks about problematic upperclassmen (rui and tsukasa) and touya goes oh I didn’t know this… the only senior I know is tsukasa senpai (clueless)… This is made even funnier by touya later extending this complete trust and faith to rui “I need to set off explosions at school to live” kamishiro.
#love that area convo where rui is like ohhh uhh this device is a tool for a show later. don’t tell shiraishi please#& touya is like ok :) and then while rui is giggling to himself like an evil scientist#imagining tsukasa’s future suffering via this device touya is like ah he seems so happy#I bet he’s imagining all the smiles he’ll bring to audience members#mine#tsukasa#touya#as for tsk breaking the rules: if the rules get in the way of making ppl happy he’s breaking them no questions asked#but also I remember reading pandemonium & he’s like oh I’ll just get my groupmates to cover for me so I can get around curfew#and I was like ??? what happened to Mr responsible class representative#but he does do it before that some. he’s a lot less mature and responsible than people think he is
