one of my friends is a biologist & i was really amused hearing some of her stories yesterday because they put into context just how believable newt's kaiju drift is as Shit A Biologist Would Do. like my friend has personally met both a guy who got infected with a botfly larva and didn't do anything to remove it (because he just didn't mind), and another guy who identified a tapeworm species by intentionally exposing himself to it (he had it narrowed down to 2 species and needed to know if it was the one that would infect humans) (it was)

monday was our last physics lesson im so sad im actually gonna miss our teacher sm he was so fun… everyone is so mean to him for no reason hes not that bad everyone just takes what he says in bad faith cos they dont like him ☹️ also he said in reference to the corrections on our tests that we did “do i even need to check [my name]’s? thats like checking the [idk man something to do with cars i didnt hear it properly] on a roll’s royce! oh well i suppose i should, don’t want anyone to think we’re picking favourites” and i was like omg… giggles twirls hair THANK YOU. but also dont say that out loud please sir like nobody here likes people who actually enjoy and are good at science i dont want to get attention drawn to me. but also it was very nice and im grateful so 👍 ALSO on the other hand im glad to be moving onto bio now because were back with the teacher we had for chemistry and hes awesome hes a great teacher and also very fun

Genuinely don’t know what we were supposed to learn in science class by filling a balloon and holding a blow torch to it besides there’s gonna be an explosion, but that was fun. I want to blow up balloons with blow torches again

#we were all 10-11 year olds #that teacher immediately made herself the coolest person ever #sometimes science class was just about blowing random shit up #(yes the students DID get to hold the blowtorch)#we learned about water displacement theory by the teacher telling us to go home and get in the bath with a bunch of stuff of varied weights #sat in my swim trunks at 11 with the bath full of bricks and spoons and my mother not even being mad #just mildly confused #or the time we wrapped eggs in bubble wrap and newspaper and threw them at the school wall #WE EGGED THE SCHOOL #FOR SCIENCE #ofc a bunch did break and the teacher was told off for letting us throw eggs at the school #but did she give a fuck? no. next lab was collecting tadpoles #from the depression in the ground that had filled with water #and a dozen muddy laughing children were running around with baby frogs

What would it have been like if I had fallen for Japanese instead of French in that language class?

#backstory for the audience of the void:#when i was like 10 i had a 'world languages' class that was designed to help us pick languages that we could more fully explore in middle #or high school #so it was essentially a sampler of the languages the high school offered for smaller kids #it had french spanish german and japanese and we'd cover the basics of each—numbers colours introductions time weather etc #and of course that was when i fell in love with french #and linguistics as an academic subject #but french was the focus right then rather than a more abstract science of language #but hm. i could have just as easily fallen into japanese.#it's unlikely i would have been able to stick with it all things considered #whereas french was easy to keep up with no matter where i was #but still—been thinking about that one lately

was looking at the school systems in latin america and i think our ministries of education should come together n decide some sort of standard fr bc what a mess

#if they could come together to make our car plate look the same ugly ass shit they should come together to do something useful as well #they should copy paste whatever finland is smoking for basic school n then steal whatever cuba is doing in high education #me personally if i could choose i'd divide the basic years in 4 phases #first (til 4yo) second (til 8yo) third (til 12yo) fourth (16yo)#which is similar to what we have but its divided evenly now. also they should make the school hours shorter #no fucking person should be sitting in a chair for over 6h #three months of vacation is a perfect number to be honest (december january july)#oh n we should actually have decent extracurricular activities OR we should b able 2 choose the classes we need #sure make a standard curriculum for ppl who dont know what theyre doing w their life but also let the rest of us bitches choose #i DID NOT need that many chemistry or biology classes. i was not interested then and im not interested now #and also that insane amount of math classes was unnecessary too. even if i use math in uni now #a perfect curriculum for me would be 25% language 25% history + geography 25% math 10% art or PE 5% sciences #these bitches had me doing 40% math 40% portuguese 20% all sciences + random philosophy #oh n while i think a test to get into university is good it should not be like a straight line bc every student is different #for example when i did ENEM the first time i was baffled on how insane the math and sciences part were #(i love the language history and geography part tho) like i think we should also be able to choose that #like when we sign up we say what uni and course we wanna take and then do a test that has nothing to do with it #we should be able to get a personalized test from the already existing database. for example #if im going to do architecture then my test needs more math physics and history. but not as much language geography and fuckass chemistry #even though i LOVE language and geography #wait this rant went too personal already. anyway change the schooling system #and also fix the way teachers are being taught to teach and also pay them better and fund better infrastructure #cos literally til when are politicians gonna put the tax money up their ass? girl you cant even give 30% to education? kill yourself <3 #the way latin america will be stuck in the lower top 50 in education for the next decades is crazy
