CHERRY :

- even when she’s with chet she accidentally calls him bob sometimes because unfortunately she sees bob in literally everything (especially chet’s alcoholism)

- she still has bob’s letterman jacket even years after he died

CHET :

- chocolate. he is obsessed with chocolate, if there is a chocolate flavor and it’s available it will be chosen

- he’s constantly covered in dog hair due to his dad’s k-9s (taken inspo from @sky4cherry again)

- youngest in his family 100% (and of the boys)

- bev is literally his big sister and it’s definitely totally by blood 100%

BRILL :

- only one of the guys that can truly handle his liquor

- he doesn’t mind jumping people, but prefers a ‘fair fight’

- the oldest child of his family and is actually the best big brother to grace the earth

- has had a crush on bev since middle school and even asked her to their middle school dance

BOB :

- paul is literally his actual brother wdym��

- once introduced marcia as his sister in front of the whole group + her and had never been more embarrassed

- he had a sickeningly huge crush on cherry before they got together

- another inspo he wears lilac because cherry one time told him he looked really good in it and now it’s suddenly his favorite color

TRIP :

- lives with his grandma and grandpa + melvin

- the best fighter in the group

- cherry and trip best friends agenda

- martrip goes downhill when he throws the first punch at two-bit in justice for tulsa (look at marley’s post about this it is SICK in the best way)

PAUL :

- sees himself in bob a LOT

- the one who taught the boys to fight

- was NOT okay when him and darry had their falling out. he became SOOO mean

- has referred to bev and marcia as “brill’s broad” and “trip’s broad” before and received two punches from two VERY angry boyfriends

unfortunately i have to yap more on the economic divides.

just there are so many implications and complications when it comes to generational wealth vs cycles of poverty. cycles of poverty my beloved in fiction and beloathed in life

i yapped a lot in the tags of my last post so read those too but i will be yapping so much here too!!! the way it affects familial relationships consumes me, two bits father leaves and suddenly now his mom has to go work and she sure as hell can’t get a great job cause she’s a greaser so she probably doesn’t have much education and she’s an asian woman in the 60s!! she’s now a single mom with kids to take care of. so she ends up working as a waitress or something similar and uses that money to scrape by, food stamps were starting to become a thing in the 60s as well so she def used those. and then she has two children. she can’t get them through college and two bit knows he has to step up and be the man of the house and that means finding some way to make money so he has to drop outta school cause he needs to get a job. that’s what greasers do and that’s what was always gonna end up happening to him. the cycle didn’t start with him or end with him but it has to keep going l

ace and steve too. bounced around to different homes, never having one home with a steady flow of income, having to find ways to get through it. ace who didn’t trust any men, especially when money was involved, and only trusted those close to her!!! the cycle of poverty hits them all again as her and her brothers can’t rely on a father to bring in income. god plus the way that poverty creates addicts due to the stress of it all and then addiction further fuels poverty since you have to buy your vices. some addicts can’t hold a steady job which makes it even worse. all cycling in on itself over and over again. and that’s not even mentioning the clear redlining that tilly mentions in her ace backstory (this may even be a whole other post tbh) the town is designed to keep the poor poorer and the rich richer.

johnny who in my mind is clearly food insecure (y’all saw the way that boy snatched that food from dally and hid it away immediately right) never quite sure where he is gonna get food from besides the curtis’s since his parents spend most of the money on alcohol. the anxiety that would bring him and it impacts his story so hard cause he always is at a disadvantage due to that. there is a reason that boy looks so small

dally has always travelled, choosing to steal to get what he needs cause he never stays long enough anywhere to get a full job. he’s been labelled a hood since day one anyway and wouldn’t get a great job anyway cause of his skin color so he decides to lean into it and do what he has to do to get by.

then we have the curtis brothers. who were so close to getting out of tulsa. they were able to try to break the cycle and send darry off to college after he was one of the first to get through high school and make it out just for him to have to come straight back. no matter how hard darry tried he couldn’t ever end it but at least he can try to get pony through school and get him a better job that he can succeed in and love comfortably with

more various thoughts i couldn’t fit into any one greaser story- a lot of the kids were most likely mistakes and/or teen pregnancies that they really couldn’t afford to have but had to go through with it anyway. the cycle of addiction that runs through these families. the parents hopes and dreams of getting out never getting fulfilled. the way race plays into poverty as well

then you have the socs who have all the money they need, who have the opportunity to get out and choose not to take it cause tulsa is a source of pride for them. they benefit from the cycle too even if the kids don’t always realize it. just ugh. the way all of it comes into play with the overarching story

so i’ve actually been cookin with this idea a little more and here’s what i’ve been thinking:

one day i’ll write a fic and not expose literally the entire plot before i even start writing it but unfortunately today is not that day lol

- ponyboy and johnny are out seeing a movie (on the west side bc no ofc they’re not thinking) aaaand naturally they get jumped by brill and chet, and bev is also with them

- they’re doing a number on johnny and pony manages to get a few good blows to chet and brill and they’re doing alright for themselves but somehow bev gets caught in the crosshairs… and she ends up getting hurt (i think maybe a broken ankle from johnny pushing her over/getting sliced by someone’s switchblade)

- brill and chet both immediately worry about her, giving pony and johnny a window to escape, but someone yells after them, “we’re gonna sue your asses into the ground, grease!”

- they make it somewhere (i’m between buck’s and the curtis house i haven’t decided tho) with darry and dally and they’re panicking bc they kinda did exactly what the socs are gonna accuse them of

- and dally has the truly *brilliant* idea to “rough them up” a little bit more (basically beat the shit out of them) to make it seem like they had to act the way that they did and that it was all in self defense

- darry hates it, he genuinely would rather die than let someone do that to pony and johnny, but he knows that they don’t have a leg to stand on, and he knows how much money bev and brill’s families have, and that chet’s dad is a police officer (i love that hc sm omg)

- and lots and lots of angst and lots of qprpbj bc golly they’re scared and all of that but yeah you get the point

…anyways i’m rlly loving writing rn and i finished a lot of my wips this week for outsiders week soooo yea i might fuck around and scribble something for this one

just had the most diabolical qprpbj fic idea and it would truly rip me to shreds but i think i have to write it for the good of the public

Godly Parents - The Socs

Paul Holden is a son of Zeus

He gives off big brother vibes with Bob.

Randy Adderson is a son of Apollo

He's an amazing archer, which he thinks is all he has going for him, but he can also feel other people's emotions if he's particularly close to them (either physically or emotionally(like his group of friends)). He's pretty sure his mom dislikes him and his (step)father is always drinking so he sorta chills at Bob's for the most part. They tend to drive around because Bob doesn't want to be at home either. They go to Paul's when they both particularly feel shitty about their home lives and the demigods' stuff takes a toll on them.

Robert “Bob” Sheldon is a son of Zeus

Is usually found at Randy's side, and the two of them are usually taking Paul, who is Bob's half brother. His mother absolutely cheated on her husband with Zeus, and ended up extremely ill after Bob turned 3. She'd wanted to have a daughter and her and her husband tried to get pregnant but could not. The one time she did she nearly died. Shes incredibly upset about that, and while she tries to hide that from Bob... When she's drunk all that pain and anger and frustration comes out at Bob. His step father isn't the best help either, but they both love him (when they aren't drinking) and are otherwise amazing parents, even his step father.

Cherry gives me the feel of a daughter of Athena. She gets along great with Ponyboy while at Camp, since what happens at camp stays at camp, because they read together. They recommend books and they just exist in the same general space together. He draws while she reads sometimes. But she is very intelligent and she has a 'fiery' attitude to those who disturb her general peace. Reminds me greatly of Annabeth.

Chet Baker

I don't know enough about Chet's personality or headcanons to accurately place him. Feel free to leave suggestions!!! However, I get the distinct feel of Apollo for him? Feels like he would love being the 'annoying younger brother' to Randy.

Marcia is a daughter of Demeter

I don't actually know why, but I get the distinct feel of Demeter from her? She gives me the vibe that she would be good with plants, and she is definitely someone you shouldn't piss off, because she can and will make your clothes itchy for weeks. Doesn't matter how many times you wash them... the poison Ivy or poison oak or whatever the itchy plant is will get into your clothing.

Chet

chet and his family moved from california when he was in 3rd grade. his first friend in town was one sodapop curtis on his little league baseball team

his dad is a cop and wants to advance up the ranks, and his mom wants to make sure they keep up their good social standing, so chet was not friends with soda for long

you know those boys in like 5th grade that crack all the dumb jokes, hit all the door frames, and tease every girl "because he likes her"? thats chet and trip

this is inspired by @/sky4cherry iirc but chet does Nawt get attention at home man. his dad is always busy with work and a little mean (yknow how dads are in the 60s) and his mom is always working on the next social function or trying to appease his dad. anyways he is just always at another soc guy's house just to have someone Talk to him

i think he picks up drinking and smoking, and fighting, for a similar reason to bob: he just wants his parents to fucking notice he's doing something wrong. but theyre high enough now in the social and job spaces that they can just wipe any misdemeanors under the rug

i cant decide if chet is an only child, or if he has like 2 siblings that are way older than him. idk

Trip

terrance dipp is The Exasperated older brother ever. bro did Nawt want a little brother sorry melvin.

anyways unfortunately i do think trip is very much a guy's guy. that boy is Not a good boyfriend to marcia unfortunately :(((((( at least by the time we get to their sophomore year/the show

him and chet can not be sat together in class. they will never shut up or stop hitting each other.

chet broke his arm one time in like 6th grade. trip threatens to break it again at least once a month

ive said this before but ill say it again: trip and melvin are just soc steve and ponyboy. trip is so tired of his kid brother being in all his sports and trying to tag along to everything

that being said, he was looking out for melvin so much during the rumble. he knew their mom would kill him if he brought his brother home all beat up, but also he really really didn't want him to get too hurt.

he Always goes to marcia to patch him up after hes been in a fight. (after the rumble though, him and marcia are on the rocks, and hes got melvin to worry about. so he just sneaks melvin home and tries to clean him up before their mom sees. its actually a sweet bonding moment between them i think)

trip lovesssss verbally poking fun at any greaser in school, especially two-bit. after he realizes two-bit likes marcia, his mean jokes become a lot more threatening

(i do love trip i promise i just also think hes kinda a mean guy. you know the kind of rowdy douche bags in high school im talking about. im so sorry ksco and sean jones i promise i love trip kdjfkdjf)

Brill

clark brillstein i'll be so incredibly honest i dont have much in my brain for him :((( i gotta sit and think more

i do think he has one of the better home lives out of the bunch, and hes got his lovely perfect girlfriend, and hes good at sports, and honestly i think he just. gets tired of everyone thinking hes got it so perfect all of the time. i think maybe thats why he likes all the fighting so much

while he is relatively happy with his life rn, hes tired of being doted on like hes perfect. and also sometimes he sees everyone else's lives being so shitty, he feels likes hes got to pick fights to justify him feeling bad about his lot.

Paul

i think he and bob literally grew up together. like their parents are Old old friends, so paul and bob have always basically been brothers despite a 2/3 ish year age difference (i dont feel like doing the exact math). i think bev's parents are also in this old friend group, so pauls known her forever too

anyways. he was probably the bob of his friend group in his class, which is why nobody really really protested darry being in their group. but i also think that when he was with darry, paul didnt really care about the whole social friend group of things too much.

contrary to popular belief i dont think paul is the friend-group-leader type. idk if that makes sense and i can yap about it more but.

anyways post-darry breakup paul is a fucking mess. hes sad and angry and those fights that darry was always trying to stop feel so damn good. maybe bob and his buddies are on to something, and bob's dad always has a full liquor cabinet

Bob

obviously we know the most about bob and his home life and inner psyche and reasons for fighting and honestly all of it really resonates in my brain. like yea im keeping all of that

bro has charisma to the max. like he has always been the ringleader of the friend group, even in like 4th grade when all the boys started becoming best buddies

he used to be such a mommas boy. before her praise just became so meaningless.

oh ive just had a revelation. he is an angrier and more resigned buddy aldridge from rotpl. his dad is pulling the strings to make sure his precious son is climbing all the right ladders.

the difference here tho is bob realized this earlier, and that started his spiral into fights and drinking and causing problems. he wanted to see what would finally make his dad stop covering and fixing everything for him. he never found that limit

he knows cherry cant stand the drinking, and i do think he does feel bad about ignoring her feelings about it. but his urge to push back against everything and spit in the face of anyone who tries to tell him how he should be just overpowers. and god everything is more fun when hes boozed up

okay so they'd have to meet each other's friends after dating for a while just because they have to figure out if they're really willing for their friends to know that they're 1. queer 2. dating someone from the other side of town

chet meeting darry and pony is ... interesting

pony's obviously 14 and kinda hates the socs with a violent passion because they jumped johnny (setting these hcs pre-canon btw so no fountain shenanigans)

darry has his own feelings about it all because of how things ended between him and paul

but when they see how hard chet's trying, and how softly soda reassures him when he thinks his brothers aren't looking, they're won over immediately

when chet accidentally lets it slip that his home life isn't great, it's darry who offers for him to stay the night, which has soda literally bouncing off the walls in happiness because he's so happy that darry's giving chet a chance

unfortunately pony is still 14, but he keeps his comments to himself, even if he's squinting at chet the whole time and trying to seem menacing

soda meeting bev and brill?? oh dude

well chet's first mistake was interrupting them at the drive-in to pull them away right to the back to meet soda

bev was already pissed off

when chet introduces them to soda and says "we're kinda going steady" brill is literally 🧍 "oh"

honestly brill's replaying every single interaction he's had with chet where someone's tried to set him up with a girl and chet just went "nope!"

bev immediately goes off on one about how chet should know better than to date a greaser (but she has no issue with him being queer !! ), which soda was expecting, but chet's just kinda there like ☹️ because he was really holding out hope

and when bev and brill notice he looks really upset, and like he's trying not to cry, they immediately swoop in to comfort him and promise that they don't think of him any differently

bev says she'd be willing to give soda a chance, meanwhile brill is already exchanging contact details with him because he is a sociable diva 🫶

Summer Rental

(1985)

Director: Carl Reiner

I first saw Summer Rental when I was 14. I remember it well, because I was sick. It’s odd how you remember the things you watch on TV when you're sick, especially as a kid. I wasn’t even home from school. It was either winter break or a weekend. The memory has always been warm, so I assumed the movie was probably decent enough.

My decision to revisit Summer Rental 15 winters later was probably spurred by my newfound fascination with the movie, nay, film Captain Ron. Maybe being stuck inside during this pandemic winter is making these tropical movies look like an escape. I don’t know. What I do know is this: Summer Rental wasn’t quite what I remembered. I never put much stock into the critical consensus surrounding decades old movies. After all, Captain Ron is an unsung masterpiece and it has a 23% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There is a reason this John Candy vehicle got panned though.

Summer Rental is an unlicensed National Lampoon’s Vacation sequel. 

This really felt like it was originally written as a spec script for a sequel to the first Vacation. I suppose there was a whole genre of “guy with a picturesque family has a bad vacation” movies in the 80s and early 90s, but the resemblance to the Chevy Chase franchise is obvious. The script for the first 2 acts may as well have said “John Candy has Clark Griswold style mishaps. Audience laughs riotously.” Even his wife in this movie can best be described as “Dollar Store Beverly Di’angelo.” She and the kids are barely characters in this movie. The boat race angle in act 3 kind of sets it apart from the Vacation movies, but locks it into the “yuppies ruining a vacation spot” trope that is so prevalent in 80s movies. 

Being generic and derivative isn’t a mortal sin, if a movie at least scratches the itches it promises to scratch. Summer Rental does not do so. Several gags end abruptly without seeing whatever jokes they’re pursuing all the way through to their logical conclusions - as if they overestimated John Candy’s ability to adlib as a fat Clark Griswold stand-in and didn’t actually write the endings to scenes. A storyline that had his wife and kids hanging out with some other better looking guy also goes absolutely nowhere. John Candy tries hard and is likable throughout, but there’s not enough in the actual script for him to drag this movie out of the mud. The regatta conflict is introduced way too late and plays out in a way that is equal parts frustratingly stupid and predictable. Summer Rental basically just has the audience aimlessly hangout with a sunburnt fat guy and then, with 20 minutes left, suddenly decides to be about a boat race.

Verdict - it’s bad

This movie would definitely be better if it was just a Vacation sequel starring Chevy Chase as Clark Griswald. According to wikipedia, Bernie Brillstein said it was inspired by a vacation he had went on. Bullshit. Summer Rental was definitely based on the success of a different movie about a bumbling asshole taking his blonde wife and their kids on a vacation full of disappointing compromises. It’s short on laughs, short on story and short on any of the cheap thrills that sometimes make generic 80s movies memorable (AKA gratuitous nudity). There are plenty of better John Candy vehicles where he is playing more authentic and or more likable versions of the classic John Candy character. The character in this movie lacks that signature Candy warmth. Pass. 

Note: I did fuck with the cheesy score in this movie. It’s comforting in a way that evokes an optimistic period of my life.

also am deeply obsessed with the matching color couple dynamic & have been mapping out other possibilities in my head lmfao… think we will prob get matching blue trip/marcia when bev is on for marcia this week and victor/melody could go on as either blue bevbrill or blue trip/marcia but sadly none of the other matching duos (rj/anna & sg/brill) have both actors covering the couples. and henry’s mint green color scheme is a bit too fucked up to find a match lmfao
