When Utah Leaders say that taxpayers "will not" pay for a ballpark, they mean that $900 million taxpayer dollars will be used
Over the last few months, more and more stories have been popping up online that discuss whether Salt Lake City or the state of Utah should build a ballpark for some future MLB expansion team. Utah residents have therefore been asking local leaders who exactly would be paying for such a project. Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-Ogden, has an answer. He wants residents to know that “local taxpayers will not be…

Edward Wren Company Building (The Wren Lofts)
31-37 High St.
Springfield, OH
The Edward Wren Company Building is located at 31-37 E. High Street (at the Limestone Street intersection) in downtown Springfield, Ohio, United States. Built in 1921, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Established in 1883, the Edward Wren Co. was Springfield, Ohio’s largest and most prominent department store for over a century, during a time of development and prosperity for the city. The Edward Wren Co. Building was constructed in 1920-21 at the corner of E. High and S. Limestone streets in downtown Springfield. In 1987, the downtown department store closed. The building has housed a various collection of tenants since the departure of the department store but has remained primarily vacant. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 2016.
The building was nearing demolition when The Turner Foundation, a local non-profit which mission is to enhance the quality of life in Springfield and Clark County, took ownership of the property. The Turner Foundation has been awarded $2 million in historic state tax credits to convert the building into market-rate residential apartments. Dillin, in partnership with The HM Turner Foundation, is seeking to convert the former Edward Wren Co. Building, including a new 5-story building addition, to an 89-unit market-rate apartment community, with structured parking, amenities on the basement level, and commercial tenants on the first floor. This project would be the first new construction market-rate multifamily project in downtown Springfield in many years and could serve as a catalyst for new investment in the once vibrant downtown core.

New Florida Laws in 2023
Florida’s legislature has enacted a number of new laws for 2023.  Notable among the new laws is the prohibition of allowing third party contractors to sue insurance companies on behalf of the insured (a practice known as “assignment of benefits”) and toll relief for motorists who frequently travel toll roads.
TOLL CREDITS: Last December, lawmakers approved a measure (SB 6-A) that provides 50 percent credits to motorists who record 35 or more toll-road trips in a month. The program will last for a year, and includes a  $500 million  grant to  toll agencies  to cover lost revenue.
RESTRICTIONS ON LOBBYING: New laws (HB 7001 and HB 7003) will carry out a constitutional amendment that voters passed in 2018 to expand from two to six years the time that certain officials will have to wait to start lobbying after leaving government positions. The restrictions will apply to lawmakers, state agency heads, judges and many local officials.
DISASTER RELIEF: Responding to the devastating 2021 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, lawmakers approved property tax rebates when residential properties are rendered uninhabitable for 30 days. During the December special session, lawmakers passed a measure (SB 4-A) to offer similar rebates to property owners who sustained damage in Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole. Property owners will be able to apply to county property appraisers between Jan. 1 and April 1.
PUBLIC NOTICES: HB 7049 allows local governments to publish legal notices on county websites instead of in newspapers. Local governments in counties with fewer than 160,000 residents must first hold public hearings to determine if residents have sufficient access to the internet.
WORKERS' COMPENSATION RATES:  The Florida Department of Insurance Regulation approved an overall 8.4 percent decrease in workers’ compensation insurance premiums for 2023.  This change took effect in January, marking the seventh consecutive year that average rates have decreased.
PROPERTY INSURANCE: During the December 2022, the Florida legislature  enacted a law that ended the controversial practice known as assignment of benefits for property insurance. The practice involves homeowners signing over claims to contractors, who then pursue payments from insurers. The prohibition on assignment of benefits (SB 2-A) applies to policies issued on or after Jan. 1.
APPELLATE COURTS: Florida’s appellate courts were revamped Jan. 1 under a law (HB 7027) that created a 6th District Court of Appeal and revised the jurisdictions of the 1st District Court of Appeal, the 2nd District Court of Appeal and the 5th District Court of Appeal.
SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOK SELECTIONS: As part of a broader education bill (HB 1467), lawmakers required that a training program be available as of Jan. 1 for school librarians, media specialists and others involved in the selection of school library materials. The program is aimed, in part, at providing access to “age-appropriate materials and library resources.”
MIYA'S LAW: Lawmakers passed a measure (SB 898) that will require apartment landlords to conduct background checks on all employees. The bill, dubbed “Miya’s Law,” was prompted by the death of 19-year-old Miya Marcano, a Valencia College student who went missing from her Orlando apartment in September and later found dead. The suspected killer, who later committed suicide, worked as a maintenance worker at Marcano’s apartment complex.

Portland OR Metro Real Estate Introduction Sep 2022
Compared to some west coast big cities, Portland is a little bit smaller but it has its own charm – green, laidback, and fun. You can easily access some amazing scenes within one hour drive – mountains, rivers and beach scene. You can do so many outdoor activities here.
Tumblr media
<Authorized by sungchoi photography>
Portland’s name was shamed during Covid for its downtown protests. But it’s still a great town for many reasons. Here are some reasons you should consider investing in Portland’s real estate now!!!
Reason #1: Relatively Cheap Compared to Other West Coast Cities.
Tech company jobs, mild climate, cultural diversity, etc. West coast is always the top option for many investors or immigrants for many reasons. Between Seattle, The Bay area and Los Angeles, Portland is affordable and cost-effective.  If you compare the income to house price, it’s affordable here.  And rents return more profit with less risk compared to the other major West Coast large cities.
2022 Q2 Median Price in Major West Coast Cities: (single family house)
Tumblr media
Reason #2: Acceptable Rental Cash Flow + Strong Appreciation
West coast houses are known for strong appreciation but bad cash flow when it’s a rental. In Bellevue or San Jose, a 1.5M house can only rent for $4000-5000. But being a landlord in Portland area could still expect some positive cash flow. For example, a 450k rental, with 330K loan, if interest rate is 6%, monthly payment is about $1979 + $450 tax, insurance. Monthly rent is about $2300-2500. It’s solid cash flow with the appreciation component.
Reason #3: Asian Community is Growing
Portland metro Asian population is about 8.65% (Chinese 1.7%, Korean 0.4%). In Seattle Asian population is about 16.3%  (Chinese 7.3%, Korean about 1.1%)These numbers are growing each year. A lot of Asian chain businesses have opened here recently including grocery stores (H-mart, Ranch 99), bakeries (Tous Le Jours, Paris Baugette, 85 degree), Restaurants (Din Tai Fung), Bubble tea shops (Sharetea, Tiger Sugar, Yomie Rice Yogart.) These chain franchises have done their own research and believe they can thrive with the increasing Asian population.
4 Popular Counties –
Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas, Clark
Tumblr media
Washington County
This is my favorite. West of Portland downtown. There are many good high paying jobs here with Nike, Intel, Columbia Sportswear and other tech firms. Practical local governments, diverse & educated population, good schools and healthy commercial opportunities.
Popular cities here: Beaverton, Tigard, NW Portland (97229), Sherwood, Hillsboro. You can choose quiet residential neighborhoods to raise kids or some convenient locations with walking distance restaurants & shopping. If you purchase a rental property here, usually you will run into better quality renters.
Big employers here:
Tumblr media
Intel has several campuses in Hillsboro (22,000 employees.) Intel offers a lot of high paying engineer jobs + mid-level technician jobs. There are also many smaller sized employers here as Intel suppliers. Intel’s future is pretty secure since Congress passed “Chip Act” in 2022 to sponsor domestic semiconductors manufactures. In many ways it’s a safe bet to invest in this area.
Tumblr media
Nike Headquarter in Beaverton (8000 employees)
Nike are still building several high-rise office buildings, including a brand new Serena Williams Building opened in April 2022.
Other good employers in Washington County: Lam Research, ASML (600), Microsoft (200), Apple has a small Lab too.
Multnomah County
Multnomah county’s core is Downtown Portland and extends to the East side. It’s where Portland started. A lot of historical buildings and interesting stories here. You will find the most creative food culture and art scenes. Multnomah county is also known for its progressive political views shared by most residents. There are many great neighborhoods with high Walkscore. Biking is very popular in this area too.
Some criticisms though are 1. Too Political 2. Higher tax 3. Homeless issue 4. Increasing crime rate. In general, this is an area most investors will avoid at this time. But it’s still a big draw for young people. If you are someone drawn to interesting city life, bar/restaurant experience, and more social life, this area is perfect for you.
Tumblr media
Good communities: Inner SE Portland, NE Portland, Pearl District, Sellwood.
Clackamas County
Another great area with slightly conservative atmosphere.
Lake Oswego is very popular and is where you will probably see the most local “Old money”. If Washington county generates “Tech money,” Old money comes from inheritance, finance and legal industry, and all kinds of self-employed businesses. Great schools and cute businesses everywhere. Houses are a little bit older here and pretty expensive.
Tumblr media
West Linn located next to Lake Oswego and is somewhat similar. But it is quieter and even more residential.
If you go further East to Happy Valley and Clackamas, or south to Wilsonville, these cities are also good neighborhoods with cheaper and newer houses.
Clark County (Vancouver WA)
Tumblr media
Portland lies just south of Vancouver Washington. The 2 cities are divided by Columbia River. Vancouver WA is another popular place for investors for the following reasons:
Vancouver is slightly cheaper but also still part of Portland Metro.
Cheaper property tax, NO State income TAX ,(Compared to Oregon average 9% income tax) Since work from home became a new norm, it has drawn a lot of high paying WFH folks to move here.
Slightly more friendly to landlords compared to Portland.
Cleaner and less homeless issues
Camas and Ridgefield are considered 2 cities with best schools. Union High in Vancouver is good too. Other than school districts and hospitals, some famous employers are: Fisher Investment (1700 employees), Wafer Tech (A TSMC company,500-1000 employees), HP (700 employees)
Concerns:
Lacking of a giant cornerstone employer like Intel that can drive and maintain economic growth.
Only relying on highway I-5 and 205 to commute to Oregon side. Traffic is horrible during rush hours. Downtown Portland still has more to offer.

Buddhist group buys land near Las Vegas Strip to build temple
Tumblr media
During a cold afternoon in Budapest in 2014, Buddhism’s purported world leader walked up a hillside with his entourage. The air was chilly and smelly.
“It is so stinky!” the followers said. But the Buddha trudged on, and near the mountaintop, a toddler tried to bow before him.
The World Buddhism Association Headquarters recounted this story in a post on a religious website. The same group plans to build a temple near the Las Vegas Strip.
The Southern California-based organization bought 12.2 acres of mostly vacant property at Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road, next to the SLS Las Vegas, for $17.5 million. The sale closed July 24, Clark County records show.
The Buddhist group paid cash, according to a broker on the deal.
The buyers don’t have the money to start construction. But if they land the funds, they would build an unexpected – if not “deeply ironic,” as one observer put it – project near Las Vegas’ rowdy casino corridor.
World Buddhism Association Headquarters attorney Steven Meyers initially said the Buddha “has no relation whatsoever” to the buyers. But federal tax and California state records show links between them — and, according to one news report, the supposed holy man was once wanted for arrest by Interpol.
No construction anytime soon
Meyers said in an email that the “main purpose” of buying the land was “to build a Buddhist temple” that will be used for “philanthropic purposes to benefit the public.”
“Precisely because the Las Vegas Strip is a place known for excessive drinking, eating, gambling, and other behavior,” he said, the buyers want to spread the teachings of Buddhism so that people “who do not understand the meaning of life can learn to … help others, benefit society, and contribute to making our country better and stronger.”
Despite the cash purchase, Meyers said the Pasadena, California-based organization “has very limited funds,” and “there is no possibility of quickly beginning” construction.
Raymond Chen, listed in California records as its CEO, could not be reached for comment.
His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III
Efforts to learn about the group’s day-to-day operations were unsuccessful, though it is mentioned, among other places, on the Xuanfa Institute’s website, where the story of the smelly trek appeared.
The website seems devoted to the man who led the hike: His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III, an artist and Chinese native also known as Wan Ko Yee.
According to Meyers, Yee is “the highest leader of Buddhism in the entire world.” A U.S. House resolution in 2008 sought to recognize him “as the true incarnation of the primordial Buddha.”
Professor Robert Buswell, director of UCLA’s Center for Buddhist Studies, said in an email that he has “heard periodically over the years about this Dorje Chang Buddha III,” but added, “I have no idea how he would have received this title, and presume it is a self-investiture.”
In 2015, the Pasadena Star-News reported that Yee was wanted for allegedly stealing more than $7 million in China. Interpol sought his arrest but eventually backed off, the paper reported.
According to Meyers, China asked Interpol in 2009 to withdraw the warrant, and Interpol notified its member countries that they were “not permitted to detain” Yee.
Interpol’s press office told the Review-Journal that arrest warrants are always issued by police in member countries, and it referred questions to relevant national authorities. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
Federal tax records show that Yee is a former chairman of the International Art Museum of America, which was “first conceived as a permanent museum solely dedicated” to the Buddha’s artwork, its website says. The museum’s corporate secretary and the World Buddhism Association Headquarters’ chief executive have the same mailing address — a house in Monterey Park, California — and the groups have the same chief financial officer, according to California state records.
Loretta Huang, director of museum operations, said in an email that she has not had any “dealings” with the World Buddhism Association Headquarters since she joined the San Francisco museum in 2013 and that she learned from a Review-Journal reporter that they share a finance chief.
Yee resigned from the museum’s board in 2011, according to Meyers, who also said it’s “very common for one person to hold an office or position in multiple entities,” in reference to the CFO.
He did not provide information about the officials with the shared mailing address in Monterey Park, saying he has “no right to inquire into the private matters of others.”
‘Questionable extreme’
In Las Vegas, the World Buddhism Association Headquarters acquired a parking lot just east of the Strip with a Monorail station along the perimeter.
Avison Young broker Ben Millis, who represented the sellers, said his group targeted hotel operators, condo developers and other possible buyers. He couldn’t recall how the Buddhist group even learned about the site.
“This was a surprise,” he said.
Las Vegas Monorail spokeswoman Ingrid Reisman said the sale will not affect its operations.
The site was owned by the Bennett family, whose patriarch, the late Bill Bennett, bought or developed several casinos on the Strip, including the Sahara, as the SLS was formerly known.
Paragon Gaming co-founder Diana Bennett, Bill Bennett’s daughter, said she had no comment on the transaction because the land was held by a family trust “of which I’m only a part.” The sale was handled by an outside trust company, and Bennett said she was “not really directly involved” in the deal.
Michael Parks of CBRE Group, a former listing broker for the site, noted the resort corridor is not devoid of religion. A 1960s-era Catholic church is near the Encore and a 1990s-era Catholic church is near the Tropicana.
Still, professor Dale Wright, who teaches Asian religions at Occidental College in Los Angeles, said a Buddhist temple near Las Vegas’ alcohol-soaked and gambling-packed tourist scene would be viewed as “deeply ironic.”
“The most authentic temples are built in contemplative contexts,” Wright said in an email. “Although being in public and serving the people would be admirable qualities, the Vegas Strip is pushing this to a questionable extreme.”

7-19-23 Testimony- Idyllwild State Park- Police report by Court Mandated Journalist/Reporter/Realtor/Mother/Lexus Owner
There was a pounding on bathroom door.
"Police!"
What's going on, I thought?
I just put in another $1 token!
"Hold on," I said, drying quickly and gathering my shampoo, conditioner and special skin regime- cut short in only 15 minutes!
"Is that your white car?" Dumb cop asked.
"Yes," I said.
"Is there a problem?"
I quickly got license in my car for him, locked doors; as he requested to run it.
I think he was blubbering lies that I didn't pay for state park shower.
This wasn't true.
I nearly asked him for a $4 refund. I was so miffed.
I showed him my "Golden Bear Pass," and he also immediately wanted to know if I had weapons in my car, clearly scared- after terrorizing me out of my women's shower room.
"Absolutely not!" I told him!
"Who issued this?" He said in disbelief confused by Green Golden Bear Pass.
This was the 1000th+ case of a court officer taking collateral with a clerk doxxing my location since 2016 divorce.
(Joan Grandizio- my boss at Free Living sold me to Schmitt & Curtis in Jan & Carmel Benson sold me in 2020-21 handyman Dennis Sketchley & Dustin (Alex Grover) aka Shane Stewart Broker Militia w/ Clark attys & Judges since 2017!)
I had just spoke to traffic court manager Michelle for Judge Hodgekins that day.
I showed cop the notes in my journal and told him to call her if he has a problem with county's and courts 4 year timeline resolving my registration issues from officer Enoche's wrongful rental car arrest with fired Triple AAA tow-driver Daniel Crabtree of Idyllwild Garage; attempted murders, rape reports through IEHP corrupt insurance, Blue Shield; life insurance scam, Dr's and social workers probate foul play on my homes.
My accountant Amy arronson scammed me on tax returns with IRS & federal banking issues Ensued in Idyllwild with PNC Bank & BBVA.
It wasn't enough to fire manager Jerry Sue Haney. PNC lost my bank records from BBVA they bought executive managers claim.
Dumb cops asked if I wanted an ambulance for my skin condition- since he interrupted my shower!
No- I told him it was due to Covid 19 officers 911 rapes!
And divorce court bigotry bribes to resist a timely cooperation of respectful divorce dissolution.
(He appeared to need an ambulance for his perversions though!)
"No- I'm not fine" I told him. "I just need dinner. My blood sugar is low & I have PTSD f/ this nonsense! Human needs!" I said knowingly & looked at his bleary eyes!
I was sweating like a pig- still hot from shower- dripping wet in my yoga clothes.
I explained that I had PTSD from similar officer abuse and that Enoche not only raped my sister Vanessa out of arrest; he bullied Jyoti on registration- AND stole my rental car with gay triple AAA driver (his casual gay lover?) Daniel Crabtree on a date at 54399 Valleyview Ave for Shane Stewart of Idyllwild Realty- before his property manager- Emily Pearson was murdered.
See receipts for payments through PNC disputes from BBVA & Wells Fargo/Amex/Fidelity fraud to IRS & Gonzalez Mexican harem of laborers and sex workers.
Much of dramas posted on tumblr & Twitter as a journalist!
Daniel Crabtree got fired from Idyllwild Garage- that's not enough. I want to dispute all Lexus tows I did with him previously to desert & LA; he milked me for black market bribes as collateral w/ faggot Sheriff he admitted- a bigot of a gay man.
Very racist and a mean mommy hater- like bosses Sheriff Bianco & Jeremy Parsons.
Charge Carmel's boytoy cop officer Dan Godsnick for foul play attempting to steal my Lexus with Carmel Benson of Idyology and murders of Adrien Denava & Leslie Wiedner of Tollgate. Whistleblowing on every bribe!
Need commissions and liens put on Countryclub & Tollgate Idyllwild homes as well as Idyology & 1067 Neptune Encinitas/Aguanga/Anza.
These are all PNC clients.
Eric Berg and I want to file disputes for Tmobile cellular reception phone not working and rapes into hospitals with Verizon thru PNC.
We want to prosecute for Rapes & attempted murders through probate real estate fraud- now that courts have another recorded testimony- and police report co-penned by me- since your officers are illiterate to write tickets or read orders on substandard 6 month grooming organised crime edu.
Pigs are way too young for ownership of a gun to bully with.
I also told Officer Bill Sallyo to arrest Shane Stewart of Idyllwild Realty & gay accomplices in militia sheriff harem/employees/slaves/drs- with his morality Police enforcing a gay agenda as Marshall Law.
If Sheriff has issue with 400+ Idy houseless they slummed against Gavin Newsom's orders in Covid- fix it.
We were all affected by his murders and robberies of our property manager Emily Pearson at 54399 Valleyview; colleagues in Aguanga/Encinitas; neighbors; and landladies.
This is a national real estate civil emergency connected to cars, kids, dmv.org scams & general federal defense fraud.
I hope Sheriff- Ranger- Police (Pig Bill didn't seem to know what he was & gloated last two) took this Marshall Law suggestion seriously to heart.
Because, now Bill's license is on the line; a breed that works for a fast buck & kink.
As a realtor of 23 years we feel all State and County Park lands in America should be run, cleaned, and maintained by civilians. They are currently dirty, functionally obsolete and mismanaged for few patrons- losing state & civilians buckets of money!
Civil servants failed constitutions. I had to warn several moms their showers might be interrupted by kinky officers. They looked worried sizing up the creepy cop.
Bill said he's a Ranger and showed off his weapons & 40 pounds of overstuffed toddler gear after banging on door claiming to be "police" for heart attack warfare effect later switching tine to ranger when I told him to get educated by his colleagues. False arrests and terrorism are a pet peeve I explained! Have Gavin send every civilian suffering courts Hardship their rightful benefits without stingy mean middle men agenting abuse!
Is Ranger Bill same fat scared officer that broke his ankle Stalking Me & Sage (Wolf Husky God-daughter) down Strawberry Creek to airbnb in 2019?
Why have cops always terrorized Idy hikers and campers/traveller's?
Is it in their job description to be ignorant fat asses terrorizing mothers?
We'd like to prosecute every officer, clerk and judge to president- that broke Governor Newsom's covid 19 tenant and car rental, lemon laws, bank, real estate, and family laws; in organized federal crimes against #FreeBritney & I.
We don't hire our service men to steal, rape nor murder civilians.
Mahalo, Thanks, Merci & Grazia,
Peace USA,
Nitya Huntley Rawal

Lawler's Tavern
N. Main St.
Mechanicsburg, OH
Lawler's Tavern is a historic commercial building in the village of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Built in 1830, it is one of the oldest buildings in the community, and it has been named a historic site. Mechanicsburg was platted on 1814 in the wake of increasing settlement, despite the ongoing war.  In its early years, the village grew slowly; the 1830 census found just 99 residents. Mechanicsburg's first two buildings were log structures used for commercial purposes: a small store and the village's first tavern respectively, they were both constructed on what is now the southern corner of Sandusky and Main Streets on the public square.
Dr. E.D. Lawler was one of six physicians practicing in Mechanicsburg during the village's earliest years. In 1839, the Champaign County Commissioners began listing the tax-paying physicians of the county in their records, and Lawler was one of thirteen doctors recorded in the county in that year. Virtually nothing is known about any of them except for their profession, although Lawler was the only one of the six early doctors to appear in the 1839 list.  However, Lawler is known to have constructed the tavern in 1830; he lived and operated his practice out of the first floor, while the second floor was rented to travellers. In 1840, the tavern was surrounded by Lawler's orchard to the north, a long, low commercial building known as the "Long Ornery" to the south, and an even older pharmacy on the opposite side of the street. All of its original neighbors have been destroyed; Lawler's is the sole commercial building remaining from the village's earliest years. Even after Dr. Lawler's time, the building remained in use as a medical office; Dr. John H. Clark, who practiced in the late nineteenth century,  and who lived next door, used an office in the tavern for a substantial portion of his career.
Throughout the tavern's history of more than 180 years, it has seen multiple modifications. Among them was the construction of space for Dr. Clark's office, which was housed in an addition rather than in the original building. Additionally, the tavern's prominent overhang with its large window, ornamented gable, and brackets was constructed at the end of the nineteenth century. Lawler's Tavern is a brick building with a stone foundation. Many of its more prominent architectural elements combine to make it a typical example of vernacular interpretations of the Greek Revival style of architecture, which never became popular in the area.  Besides the facade's overall symmetrical design with multi-paned windows,  the building derives its Greek Revival appearance most clearly from the central entryway: surrounded by a transom and sidelights, the doorway is framed by pilasters on both sides. Inside, some original components remain, including the stairway and woodwork in the front hallway.
As the only commercial building surviving from Mechanicsburg's earliest years, Lawler's Tavern is a core component of the village's historic built environment; along with the former Second Baptist Church, it is one of just two Greek Revival buildings near the center of the village.   Spatially, it occupies a transitional place between the commercial and residential neighborhoods of Main Street; the commercial district extends southward, while the next building to the north is the beginning of the village's upscale residential neighborhood. On August 29, 1985, Lawler's was listed with the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying because of its historic architecture. It was part of a multiple property submission of approximately twenty buildings, scattered throughout the village in such a low concentration that a historic district designation was not practical.  Several other buildings included in the group were houses and commercial buildings on North Main, such as the adjacent John H. Clark House, the Oram Nincehelser House, and the Masonic Temple across the street, the United Methodist Church at the intersection with Race Street; and the Village Hobby Shop a short distance to the south.

Ghostly warning: Dead gangster Ma Barker doesn’t want her house moved
He called the newsroom with a warning: They can’t move that house.
“I’m worried something terrible is going to happen,” the man said in a thick New York accent. “I have to warn somebody.”
Then he told me a ghost story.
His name is Donald J. Weiss. He’s a 62-year-old retired police patrolman from upstate New York. He had moved to Ocala several years ago and visited the house where gangster Ma Barker had been killed. He had wanted to see the site of the longest shootout in FBI history: four hours, more than 2,000 bullets.
But when he wandered beneath the live oaks, a voice growled, “Get outta here, lawman!”
And when he took a photo of the front porch, a shadowy figure appeared.
“That woman is still in that house,” he told me. “And she’s pissed.”
He gave the photo to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office because he wanted to enter it into evidence. And because bad things started happening as soon as he had blown up the print. “I had a heart attack,” he said. “You think that’s a coincidence?”
The property has been sold, he told me. County officials want to move the house.
“They have no idea who or what is in there,” Weiss said. “That woman has the power to do a lot of things. We are dealing with the afterworld here.”
I thanked the caller for his concern.
“When are they moving it?” I asked.
He paused, as if to make a point, then said gravely, “By Halloween.”
Reporters get a lot of crazy calls. Many might have dismissed this one. But I knew this house, and so did my photographer friend John Pendygraft.
“Hey John,” I called across the cubicle wall. “Do you remember that story we did on the Ma Barker house?”
John’s eyes got big. “Do you remember what happened?”
Our story four years ago had been about real estate: historic home for sale on nine waterfront acres, eight miles north of the Villages, two hours from Tampa. And about the gangsters who hid out there until the end.
We had toured the four-bedroom house with a Realtor, whose assistant shivered and said, “I get the weirdest feeling when I’m in here.” We had reported rumors about flickering lights and an unsuccessful exorcism.
But we hadn’t written about what had happened to John. Or what he saw when he enlarged one of his pictures.
John has worked in war zones in Afghanistan and the Gaza Strip. He has photographed the dead from an Asian tsunami, a Mexican assassination and Hurricane Katrina. If he ever is scared, he won’t show it.
That fall day in 2012, in the Ma Barker house, he had gone alone into the front bedroom to take pictures through the window, looking out toward the lake where the FBI agents had crouched behind trees.
All of a sudden, John rushed out, cameras, lights, tripod flapping over his shoulders, nearly sliding down the 13 stairs. “I don’t know what happened, or what that was,” he panted. He heard the mattress fall, then saw it, dangling through the bed frame. “I didn’t touch it,” he insisted.
We left that afternoon, as dusk began to descend. From beneath the Spanish moss, John shot a few final frames. The next day, when he zoomed in on his laptop, he saw a strange figure on the screened porch: The silhouette of a stout woman with a bun, who looked like she was holding a machine gun.
Her story starts in Missouri, in 1873. Her parents named her Arizona Donnie Clark. She and a farmhand, George Barker, had four sons. As soon as the boys were grown, her husband left.
Legends vary about Ma Barker’s role in her boys’ gang. Some say she just cooked and cleaned. Others say she was the mastermind.
They began by robbing banks, then murdered a policeman. From 1910 through 1930, they are said to have stolen $2 million. And killed at least 10 people.
The FBI’s first director, J. Edgar Hoover, called them “the worst criminals in the entire country.” Ma Barker became the only woman to top the most wanted list.
In 1934, the gang split and went into hiding. One son fled to Chicago. Ma and her favorite son, baby Freddie, moved to Miami where, posing as a wealthy widow, she asked if anyone knew a secluded spot where she could spend the winter.
Someone introduced her to Carson Bradford, whose family had a lovely home in the center of Florida, on Lake Weir.
The house sounded perfect: fully furnished, set back from the road, with a boat tethered to a dock out back. Ma paid the full season’s rent in cash. Just before Thanksgiving, she moved in with Freddie and a couple of his friends.
In a letter to her son Arthur in Chicago, she drew a map of the lake and circled the closest town, Ocala. She mailed it from Ocklawaha’s little post office.
FBI agents found Arthur the following January, and with him, the letter, which led them to Ma’s hideout.
In the predawn darkness on Jan. 16, 1935, a dozen officers pointed their guns at the upstairs windows. “This is the FBI,” an officer shouted, according to an agency report. “You are surrounded.”
Some say the gun battle lasted as long as six hours.
When it was over, they found Freddie, 32, shot in the back of his head. Ma, 63, was curled on the floor, cradling her Tommy gun. That day, Hoover said, marked “the end of an era of violence.”
For nine months, the corpses lay unclaimed. Finally, a relative moved them closer to home.
But some say Ma still inhabits that two-story, cream-colored house with forest green shutters. The cop on the phone, my friend the photographer, the former and current owner all saw, heard or felt … something.
But how do you report a ghost story?
I started with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and that “evidence” photo the retired cop mentioned on the phone.
Lt. Dave Redmond remembered some man bringing in the photo, but the deputy hadn’t seen anything in it.
Records only go back to 1990, said department spokeswoman Lauren Lettelier. “But since then, there have been no reports of hauntings at that house.”
I talked to Carson Good, 47, the great-grandson of the man who built the house. He has memories of swimming and sailing in the lake. And of countless sleepless nights, cringing in the dark. “I’m not a big believer of ghosts, but I heard a lot of sounds in that house,” he said. “Voices. Furniture moving. People walking up and down the wooden stairs.”
His grandmother didn’t like to talk about it, but she often heard spirits stirring. Years ago, he said, a psychic from Cassadaga held a seance at the house and convinced the ghost of Freddie Barker to move on. But the medium said Ma refused to move.
Good and his family sold the property for $750,000 and donated the house to the county, which hired a contractor to lift the home off its foundation and float it across Lake Weir to a park called Carney Island. County commissioners allocated $270,000 for the move. Private donations and fundraising will finance the museum.
County tax collector George Albright, who grew up next to the storied house, envisions an homage to the early days of the FBI, as agents set out to capture notorious gangsters like “Baby Face” Nelson, “Pretty Boy” Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde and, of course, the infamous Barker gang.
“We’ve already had calls from people asking about ghost tours. If they want something like that, or to hold seances, we’ll look into that,” said the tax collector, “as a revenue source.”
Some say the gang buried Mason jars filled with cash along the lake. Local children used to spend summers digging for the treasure, but came up with shovels full of sand.
As soon as the home is removed, before the new owner closes on the land, the tax collector plans to bring in a team with ground-penetrating radar to scan the soil.
“Let’s hope she’s a friendly ghost,” he said.
On a gray Wednesday in October, more than 81 years after the shootout, John and I returned to the scene. The house already had been lifted on jacks. The screened porch was gone; workers were carrying out lamps. A true-crime novelist was parked in an SUV, taking pictures.
Like John, he swore he had seen a face in a window.
“I think whatever’s in there doesn’t want us to come in,” said Tony Stewart, who had driven from Indiana to see the house in its original setting. “And it won’t come out.”
We had told the retired cop that we would meet him later. The tax collector didn’t want anyone else at the construction site. But Weiss pulled up in his white Cadillac, quaking in his tassled loafers.
“This is where their bodies were. They dragged ‘em right down this driveway,” said Weiss, clasping his arms across his chest. “She’s not at rest. She will never leave this property.”
He has felt this before, he said. “I sense spirits.”
The first time was in 1992, just before Christmas. He was on patrol in White Plains, N.Y., resting in his car between calls, when he had a vision of a sad teenage boy: long hair, pale, with a pug nose. Two days later, he was sent to a home where a teenage boy had hanged himself. “The same boy I’d seen.”

Katie Clark is just the coolest. She’s running for Altadena Library Board to bring transparency and accountability to her community, and we’ll let her explain why:
We live in one of the most diverse communities in Los Angeles County, but how representative of that diversity are our politics, our representatives, and our policies? Our marquee public institution - the Library - is paid for largely by property tax dollars, and steeply rising home values mean that while the Library is well funded, some of those who most need its services can barely afford to live here. Then there are the bigger questions: where do we get our information, how informed are we, and what holds a community together? In an age of instant Googling, what is the role of a Library?
