clangen moments! making simple refs. i got the go-ahead from the creators and upkeepers of the disorders and disabilities mod to make a comic based on my playthrough of it, so well see how long this one lasts. having fun though! already got 5 pages and 5 refs so id say we are pretty damn well off. i will not be colouring or lining 99% of it, i just wanna draw silly cats with disabilities

I think it's important to clarify that the disabilities and disorders mod is not base game ClanGen and the team of people working behind it are regular users, not developers. None of that content will ever touch the official unmodified game.

For everyone asking if you need to stop playing ClanGen because of this mod, here is your clarification that the mod is not part of the official game.

Hi, I’m a fan of warrior cats and I have autism. This sounds random, but this is important for what I have to say regarding something that has made not only me, but others, very uncomfortable.

In the clangen game discord server, there is a mod called “Disabilities and Disorders.” Many of the names for disorders have been changed in order to be more “in universe.” However, this has resulted in some rather unfortunate names. In this post, I’ll only be focusing on the one for Autism, “Star Walker.” There are other inappropriately named disorders (i.e., DID being called “shattered soul”), though.

So, star walker. The issue with this name lies in its implications, that a cat with autism can walk among the stars, aka StarClan. It means that this cat has a connection to the stars, thus directly linking autism to StarClan, which is the main religion of warrior cats. And, if you’ve read the books, you know that StarClan is an absolute shitshow. I feel that it is also worth bringing up characters like Jayfeather, and medicine cats as a whole. Jayfeather’s power involved being able to walk among StarClan while sleeping, and medicine cats are able to communicate with StarClan. Jayfeather’s powers are also from StarClan themselves.

Therefore, by referring to Autism as star walker, you are directly connecting it to the literal heaven of the clans, and the clans’ religion. It even implies that Autism is a gift from StarClan, which sounds fine at first, but it takes away from the experience of autism as a whole. It’s being glorified and sugar coated. To see Autism be depicted as this ethereal, head-in-the-clouds thing is disheartening. It sucks. It really, really sucks. Because Autism isn’t like that at all. Having Autism be linked and tied into the religion of warrior cats (albeit in a fan-made game) feels icky.

What’s the disabilities and disorders clangen mod? How do I get this?

So I was playing clangen and I was using the Disabilities and Disorders mod and I changed the chances of cats getting permanent conditions for fun. But I made the chance really high and a litter of five kits all ended up being born with something- and ALL FIVE ARE FEMALE. But I adore them, so I drew them!

All five of them started off as warrior apprentices, Moss almost became an elder, but seeing her sisters becoming apprentices despite their conditions, she argued that she should. As time progressed, Sun and Mottle decided it would be better for them to become medicine cats. Wisteria, soon after becoming a warrior, decided it was better for her to be a mediator as well.

Meanwhile, Stumpy and Moss stayed as warriors, both prevailing in their apprenticeships and becoming warriors around the same time as Wisteria

there's a disabilities and disorders mod being worked on for clangen and like yeah that's cool and all but did you have to call the disorders shit like "star walker" and "thunderous spirit" ???

i don't have autism but my sister does and when i told them the name for autism in the mod was "star walker" you could sum up the response as "please just call me a slur." it has the same vibes as whatever the fuck "neurosparkly" is.

tbh the only name that's like, decent is "heavy soul" for depression cause like. as someone with depression? yeah, fuck man, it sure is ig

Also, about the clangen disabilities & disorders mod i dont understand why they even felt the need to come up with fantasy names for everything in the first place when the disabilities and disorders in the base game are all referred to be their proper medical terms (hearing loss, constant joint pain, low vision, ect) also, I'm autistic and i personally find it offensive, like that one anon said id rather be called a slur then a sparkle-dream-mind-walk-vision-whatever lol

@ those who keep ragging on the names chosen by the Clangen disabilities & disorders mod you do realize that the names were chosen by multiple people WITH THOSE disorders & disabilites right. You have a right not to like them but just …… maybe keep that in mind before calling them ableist lmfaoooo

Just because someone has a disorder or disability also doesn't mean they can't be ableist. It doesn't have to be intentionally malicious. Internalised ableism also exists.

Disabled people are also not a hivemind, we don't all share the same opinion. People are allowed to be upset by this in the same way people are allowed to like it.

autistic disabled prson here so sorry if uve been getting alot of asks about the clangen disabilities and disorders mod and u donot have to post this one. i thought id say that i think the weird names for the disabilities is just like really funny to me. they never really strook as ableist 2 me (not to say they cant be offensive to others) i just thought it was funny how they couldnt just use the actual names..... i think star walker is funny. actually while im typing this though star walker as a name for autism does feel like its in the same vein "not disability but a different ability" which is a stupid as fuck phrase and i can see Why people dont like it. idk might be thinking too hard about a kitties game mod. anyways i dont think its the end of the world, at most its just something weird and to me its just something to laugh at. the creators of the mod said the people on their team are people with the disabilities in the mod so if its any help at least theyre not neurotypical and ablebodied naming everythang... idk u can still voice ur concerns of course but its not a big deal to me

tldr i dont personally see the ableism. its in good faith BUT its still okay to be concerned about it

On the topic of the whole Clangen Disabilities and Disorders mod thing- i feel the need to mention Starwalker isn't the only potentially offensive name. now- i don't have any of the following conditions, but i do participate in alot of mental health awareness conversations and this feels familiar to other things i've seen people with the disorders say. if this isn't as bad as it seems to me, please let me know.

Psychosis, Schizophrenia and Schizoid Personality Disorder are all under the same condition in the mod, which they've called "Otherworldly Mind".

it isn't mentioned on the server, but it is in the mod key google doc they link in a pinned message. i should also mention the screenshotted message that one person gave is out of date, as is the pinned message in the server. BPD has been changed to "Strong Soul" as seen in the mod key doc. if that's any better i wouldn't know, i don't have BPD.

I initially had something else typed up but I've thought more and changed my mind.

I especially do not like the labelling of depression as "heavy soul". As someone who has been diagnosed with depression for almost 7 years now, labelling it like this feels almost romanticised if that makes sense? Like they picked the name that made depression sound the coolest? Like Cloudnettle says, these names seem to not take into account how debilitating certain conditions can be. Not once did I lay in bed and go "man, my soul sure feels heavy today :/".

I'm not mad that they wanted to come up with new names since yeah, the cats in Warriors don't exactly have names for a lot of conditions but I wish they'd put more thought into it I suppose. The way the mod appears to have these events occur in the game also feel very... reductive.

Personally I'm not super against the idea of making the terms but there is something to be said about names like otherworldly mind and star walker not having the room for the disabling aspects of mental disability.

It's esp annoying that they shoved different disorders into the same area just because they all have psychotic symptoms, but didnt put personality disorders together even though the ICD-11 (thats what people use globally, the DSM only exists for american health insurance) puts all personality disorders on a spectrum, while there are several distinct disorders with psychotic symptoms, and they're distinct because they all have other experiences associated with them that are disabling.

And I find that very annoying because i have experienced symptoms of psychosis in the past because of a manic episode, but I would never think to lump myself with people who experience it on a regular basis. Not to mention paranoia and such being a very very not fun thing to experience and Otherworldly mind making it sound like being afraid of all your friends and family is a superpower.

There's people in the ClanGen server making a disability and disorders mod and they keep ignoring other disabled people who feel uncomfortable with terms similar to derogatory names & offensive stereotypes, dismissing the upset disabled folk as giving "bad non-constructive criticism". It's honestly fucking gross and I wish I could block the forum from showing up in the channel.

I want to add onto that ClanGen mod ask that I don't have an issue with people adding disorders and disabilities into the game. I have an issue with dismissing valid criticism from other disabled people because they disagree with your perspective.
