Currently based in the Swiss cities of Martigny and Vevey, Latifa Echakhch was born in 1974 in El Khnansa, Morocco. When she was three, her family relocated to France, where she attended the École supérieure d’Art de Grenoble and later received degrees from the National School of Arts Cergy-Pontoise and the Lyon National School of Fine Arts. She began her studio practice in 2001.

Byron and Shelley chronicle their 1816 sailing trip in Lake Geneva — Day 2, June 24th —

Percy Shelley, History of a Six Weeks' Tour:

“The next morning we passed Yvoire, a scattered village with an ancient castle, whose houses are interspersed with trees, and which stands at a little distance from Nerni, on the promontory which bounds a deep bay, some miles in extent. So soon as we arrived at this promontory, the lake began to assume an aspect of wilder magnificence. The mountains of Savoy, whose summits were bright with snow, descended in broken slopes to the lake: on high, the rocks were dark with pine forests, which become deeper and more immense, until the ice and snow mingle with the points of naked rock that pierce the blue air; but below, groves of walnut, chesnut, and oak, with openings of lawny fields, attested the milder climate.

As soon as we had passed the opposite promontory, we saw the river Drance, which descends from between a chasm in the mountains, and makes a plain near the lake, intersected by its divided streams. Thousands of besolets, beautiful water-birds, like sea-gulls, but smaller, with purple on their backs, take their station on the shallows, where its waters mingle with the lake. As we approached Evian, the mountains descended more precipitously to the lake, and masses of intermingled wood and rock overhung its shining spire.

We arrived at this town about seven o'clock, after a day which involved more rapid changes of atmosphere than I ever recollect to have observed before. The morning was cold and wet; then an easterly wind, and the clouds hard and high; then thunder showers, and wind shifting to every quarter; then a warm blast from the south, and summer clouds hanging over the peaks, with bright blue sky between. About half an hour after we had arrived at Evian, a few flashes of lightning came from a dark cloud, directly over head, and continued after the cloud had dispersed. ‘Diespiter, per pura tonantes egit equos:’ a phenomenon which certainly had no influence on me, corresponding with that which it produced on Horace.

The appearance of the inhabitants of Evian is more wretched, diseased and poor, than I ever recollect to have seen. The contrast indeed between the subjects of the King of Sardinia and the citizens of the independent republics of Switzerland, affords a powerful illustration of the blighting mischiefs of despotism, within the space of a few miles. They have mineral waters here, eaux savonneuses, they call them. In the evening we had some difficulty about our passports, but so soon as the syndic heard my companion's rank and name, he apologized for the circumstance. The inn was good. During our voyage, on the distant height of a hill, covered with pine-forests, we saw a ruined castle, which reminded me of those on the Rhine.��

Lord Byron in a letter to Hobhouse:

"Evian—June 23d. 1816

“At the present writing I am on my way on a water-tour round the Lake Leman — and am thus far proceeded in a pretty open boat which I bought & navigate — it is an English one & was brought lately from Bordeaux — I am on shore for the Night — and have just had a row with the Syndic of this town who wanted my passports which I left at Diodati not thinking they would be wanted except in grand route — but it seems this is Savoy and the dominion of his Cagliari Majesty whom we saw at his own Opera — in his own city — in 1809 — however by dint of references to Geneva — & other corroborations — together with being in a very ill humour — Truth has prevailed — wonderful to relate they actually take one's word for a fact - although it is credible and indubitable. — Tomorrow we go to Meillerai - & Clarens - & Vevey - with Rousseau in hand - to see his scenery - according to his delineation in his Heloise now before me. - The views have hitherto been very fine - but I should conceive less so than those of the remainder of the lake.”

UPDATE: I took my dates from Shelley, but his dates must have been confused and Byron's must be more accurate. Because I'd been confused by Byron's dates in the past, since he often wrote past midnight (thus often referring his prior day as "today"), I had assumed Shelley was more trustworthy. According to Shelley and His Circle vol. 4 pp. 700-701, they left on June 22nd which was a Saturday, and so I believe each day of their trip would be one earlier than I and Shelley stated in these posts.

today is our 3rd day at the new apartment and i woke up in a low, exhausted mood. i was loving the new space and familiarizing myself with the new environment, going at 110% trying to make it feel like home as soon as possible and i just crashed today. i made a list of all the packing and unpacking we have had to do in the last ~7 weeks, number indicates nights spent. we had to adjust to 13 different places and 12 different beds lol.

8/26 zurich - 1 lucerne - 1 vevey - 2 zermatt - 1 st moritz - 2 zurich - 1 nyc - 7 9/11 south pasadena - 17 9/28 mexico city - 4 oaxaca - 3 matt’s parents - 1 my parents - 2 10/9 new pasadena home - 2+

the movers came at about 9am on wednesday and i was juggling WFH by hotspotting, and matt was setting up the internet. they moved 53 boxes worth of stuff! i was tense because the movers' arrival window was for 9-11am and i had a meeting at 1pm. so i'm glad everything worked out fine and i got to attend the meeting.

matt has been very busy and nervous onboarding for his new job, and he officially starts on monday. this means that most of the unpacking/organizing (after the unpacking service) falls on me. i couldn't stand the messes, so i basically finished organizing the bathrooms, bedroom, and most of the office. i just need to work on the kitchen and balcony. i'm so dead tired from the physical work. i decided to leave the messes as they are and take my time sorting things out in the coming weeks. there's no rush.

we transitioned from using the app latch for opening all the doors of our last apartment, to having 3 physical keys and a garage remote. everything feels more slow paced here and people have the capacity/time to give you attention. on our first day, our neighbor held the door open for matt and introduced himself. in our 4 years living in brooklyn, no neighbor has said hi to us and vice versa.

i'm pretty happy with this location. it has some of the walkability like we had in nyc (walkable to grocery stores, boba, coffee, restaurants, and a yoga studio). so it makes it easier to share one car if needed. though i am considering just borrowing one of my parents car for about a year.

slowly, we will get into our new routines and get acquainted with the things around us. so far, i think chapresso may be my new debutea. TJ will be my grocery store of choice as it is only an 8 min walk away. the yoga studio here is pretty nice too, but definitely more mild than the LA studios.

tomorrow, i will babysit for my brother and SIL because my parents are in asia for 3 weeks. on sunday, we will have lunch with matt's family and move out one of our couches. life feels like it has become a complete 180. although this is all good change, it's still exhausting experiencing the transition/changes all happening at once. i hope matt's new job is good - so far it seems solid and the culture focuses more on patient care than making $, which makes sense with NYC being the capitalist center.

we're also learning how to live in a bigger space with each other. out of habit, i think we're so used to always being around each other all the time, so it's a weird but good feeling that we now have personal space lol. i'm here chilling in the bedroom, while he's doing his training modules in the office room. we also have 1.5 bathrooms now so we can poop at the same time! and it is so great that i don't have to hear every little thing he is doing (i.e tik toking, typing, talking on the phone)!!! feels like a big luxury and upgrade, though it is into an older apartment.

move out the couch, figure out what other furniture and seating we need for more guests

start inviting friends over (starting with SZ, perhaps we can WFH together)

Since the mid-2000s, enigmatic French artist JR has been bringing large-scale photographic projects to cityscapes around the world. His public installations range from trompe l’œil optical illusions to series raising awareness about the plight of refugees, foregrounding the experience of marginalised or oppressed communities. His work has been collated in a far-reaching monograph, originally published in 2015, with a revised edition including 140 new images and a foreword by film-maker George Lucas. “I take photos of people, of places,” says JR in the book. “And I paste them on trains, on floors, on walls, on buildings, houses. Sometimes I even have people carry them. What really matters is to make the stories travel; I see my work as a message in a bottle thrown in the ocean. I never really know where it will go.”

Thabo Sefolosha (born May 2, 1984) the first Swiss-born NBA player, was born in Vevey, Switzerland to Patrick Sefolosha, a South African musician, and Christine Sefolosha, a Swiss painter. He is a member of the Swiss National basketball team and plays for the Atlanta Hawks.

He started playing basketball at age eleven and soon became one of the best players in Switzerland. After playing two years in the First League there, he took his talent to France, where he played for Elan Chalon, one of the top basketball teams in Europe. His career culminated in his third season, as he was picked to play in the all-star game and was regarded as one of the best players in Europe. He played one season in Italy before entering the NBA in 2006.

The Chicago Bulls drafted him in the thirteenth pick in the 2006 NBA draft. He was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He became one of the NBA’s best defenders, and in 2012, the team won the Western Conference finals.

He was acquired by the Atlanta Hawks in a sign-and-trade deal. His season was cut short due to a broken ankle suffered during an incident with the New York Police on April 8, 2015. He and a teammate were arrested outside a nightclub in New York City for allegedly interfering with police after Milwaukee Bucks’ forward and fellow NBA player Chris Copeland was stabbed in the abdomen.

He refused a no-plea bargain and instead chose to let the case proceed to trial. Charged with three misdemeanor charges, obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, he was found not guilty by a Manhattan jury. He announced that he would file a lawsuit against the city of New York as well as the eight officers involved in his arrest for up to $50 million in damages. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Good morning!  Today I will go to Geneva for the Lake Parade, but first I want to see a bit of Gaillard in France, accessible with the line 16 tram at Moillesullaz, and also go to Meyrin, close to the Geneva airport, by trolleybus.  At the end, about 7 PM, I will eventually take the train to Martigny and eat supper, then return to the hostel.  It will be quite a nice Saturday.

Heute fahre ich zur Lake Parade nach Genf, aber zuerst möchte ich ein bisschen Gaillard in Frankreich sehen, erreichbar mit der Straßenbahnlinie 16 in Moillesullaz, und außerdem mit dem Trolleybus nach Meyrin in der Nähe des Genfer Flughafens fahren. Am Ende, gegen 19 Uhr, werde ich schließlich mit dem Zug nach Martigny fahren, zu Abend essen und dann zur Herberge zurückkehren. Es wird ein ganz schöner Samstag.

I woke up about 6:30 AM, took a shower, got dressed, and went to breakfast.  The breakfast place was not very crowded.  I was able to find a table, and enjoy my breakfast.  I had coffee, toast, cheese, sliced meat and corn flakes.  After I finished, I went back to the room to brush my teeth, then went on a walk to the Territet rail station.  The day was very nice, so it was possible.  I boarded the westbound REV for Lausanne through Vevey, and connected there for an inter city train to Geneva.  The train did not stop at Renens, Morges or Nyon, but went through it.  It did not stop until Geneva.  Geneva has a couple of exclaves just a little southwest of Nyon, making the town of Céligny, which the train passed through.  Céligny even has a spot on Lac Léman, also known as Lake Geneva.  The last town in Vaud before the actual canton of Geneva is Mies.  Versoix and Genthod are the next towns the train passed before stopping at Geneva.  The first station in Geneva is Sécheron, very close to Parc Mon Repos.  

At the time, tracks 7 and 8 were still used for the SNCF trains, coming from France.  In 2003, Switzerland was not yet in Schengen, so there was a passport check at the station, for tracks 7 and 8 before accessing the rest of the station.  There is also an RER line to La Plaine, close to the border with France.  

I exited the train at Geneva.  I bought a day pass for the bus and tram lines.  The first place I went was to Meyrin to buy some soft drinks.  I took the trolleybus line 10 to Centre Balexert.  It is on the city limits of Geneva and Meyrin.  At some stage in February 2012, I had stayed in a hotel along the way towards the airport, along Avenue Louis Casai.  Once I bought my soft drinks at the Pick Pay grocery store, I took another tram to the rail station and took line 12 to Plainpalais where I could see the Monument des Reformateurs.  I took another tram, not sure which line, to connect to the one that was supposed to go to Moillesullaz, however it terminated at Gare des Eaux Vives, generally in the right direction but not exactly where I wanted to go.

I had to walk from Gare des Eaux Vives back to Route de Chêne and wait on line 16.  The train went through Thônex, and ended at Moillesullaz.  That was the terminus at the time, before crossing into France.  Anyone who wanted to go to France, would have to walk across the border.  I walked eastward along Rue de Genève up to the SPAR grocery store, where I bought some lunchmeat and cheese, as well as some bread rolls.  Also I bought a bottle of my favorite shampoo, the Pétrole Hahn for oily hair.  I was ready to eat lunch after I paid for everything.  It is worthwhile to mention, that the SPAR grocery store is located next to the tram stop Gaillard-Libération, which was built in the late 2010s, as an extension to Annemasse SNCF station.  In December 2016, I noticed that there were initial steps being made to create the extension, and I noticed this when I visited there.

I walked back across the Swiss border at Moillesullaz.  It was about 12 PM, and I wanted to be at Parc Mon Repos by 2 PM, prior to the start of the Lake Parade.  I took the tram to Place Molard, and walked to the Horloge Fleurie and found a bench in the Jardin Anglais to eat.  I watched the Jet d'Eau pump its water high into the air.  Jet d'Eau operates all day long during the summer, but is shut off for much of the winter.        

After I finished lunch, I put away my unused soft drink bottles, and walked back to Molard to catch the tram to Gare CFF, and transfer to the line 1 bus to Parc Mon Repos.  It was about 1:30 when I arrived.  This would be the start of the parade.  There was supposed to be about 20 or 30 mobiles with people dancing to loud techno music and many other similar styles.  Some mobiles were rented for local dance clubs.  While I was waiting for the parade to start, I was listening to One FM with my radio.  I had a cassette in it, so I could record the music.  I also had my microphone so I could hear the live music as well.  

There were so many people in costume.  It resembled the Love Parade in Berlin and Street Parade in Zürich that I had remembered.  I remember one young lady dressed as a leopard with face paint.  I also remember seeing a few nurses, a few equestriennes, a few cowgirls, many more.  

The parade started a little past 2 PM.  It went south along Quai Wilson and eventually Quai du Mont Blanc.  On the parade, it is better to try to remain in one spot, as the mobiles can take up much space, and there is a crowd that can be difficult to go around.  Crossing the road will sometimes be faced with resistance, as others might want to cross.  This is also true for the Zürich Street Parade.  The parade made its way across Pont du Mont Blanc and Jardin Anglais.  I was watching the mobiles most of the time.  

About 6 PM I decided I had had enough, as I was getting tired walking the parade route.  I had to go to Rue du Stand and catch the tram to Gare CFF, and take a train.  I found one that went to Martigny, in the Canton of Valais.  I had been to Valais in April 2001 and November 2002, but did not spend time in Martigny.  The canton Valais is separated from Vaud, mainly by the Rhône at the far east of Lac Léman / Lake Geneva, up to about Saint-Maurice.  Saint-Maurice is the first station in Valais that the train arrives in.  Valais has a short section right next to France that has a coastline on Lac Léman / Lake Geneva.  

When I was in Martigny, I found a place to eat.  It was the L'Ambroise restaurant, located at the Garni Forclaz Touring hotel, across the street from the rail station.  I was wanting some pasta and beer.  It was on the menu for a cheap price, so I picked the carbonara and Feldschlösschen half liter.  Was excellent.  The meal cost under CHF 25.00 even with tip.

I took the train back to Territet, and the sun was starting to set.  I enjoyed the quick visit to the canton of Valais.  When I arrived at Territet, I walked along the street to the hostel.  There was not much traffic.  As soon as I got to bed, I went to sleep.  The next two days would involve long travels, much of it during the night of the 3rd to the morning of the 4th.
