The West pier closed to the public in 1975 and fell into disrepair and gradually collapsed. Major sections fell into the sea during storms in late 2002, and two separate fires, both thought to be arson, in March and May 2003 destroyed most of the remaining structure. Some structured demolition took place in 2010 to make way for the i360 observation #tower ; further structural damage from storms has occurred since. #brighton (à The i360 Brighton Seafront) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqA0gm2Ielx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Clock Tower (sometimes called the Jubilee Clock Tower) is a free-standing #clock #tower in the centre of #brighton , part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. Built in 1888 in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, the distinctive structure included innovative structural features and became a landmark in the popular and fashionable seaside resort. The city's residents "retain a nostalgic affection" for it, even though opinion is sharply divided as to the tower's architectural merit. Initially known as Zone 6 off the Sussex coast, it was later named the "Southern Array" (Hastings). When the site of the #wind #farm was changed from near #hastings to off #brighton, E.ON held a competition with local schools to suggest a new name as a public relations exercise. The name ‘Rampion’ was voted the winning suggestion, submitted by Davison High School Pupil Megan McCullough, after the round-headed rampion (Phyteuma orbiculare), also known as the Pride of Sussex, the county flower of #sussex . #harnessingthewind #newenergy (à Rampion Offshore Windfarm.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqAzMcKIGnk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The pier was constructed during a boom in pleasure pier building in the 1860s, and was designed to attract tourists to Brighton. It was the town's second pier, joining the Royal Suspension Chain Pier that opened in 1823. The West Pier was extended in 1893, and a concert hall was added in 1916. The pier reached its peak attendance at this time, with 2 million visitors between 1918 and 1919. Its popularity began to decline after World War II, and concerts were replaced by a funfair and tearoom. A local company took over ownership of the pier in 1965, but could not meet the increasing costs of maintenance and filed for bankruptcy. The pier closed to the public in 1975 and fell into disrepair and gradually collapsed. Major sections fell into the sea during storms in late 2002. #westpier #brighton (à West Pier, Brighton Seafront) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqAxhSjIqZ3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Parts of The Lanes date back to the late 16th Century when Brighton was a small fishing town called Brighthelmstone. Some of the alleyways – or twittens as they’re known locally – have an even older feel to them. The Cricketers Arms on Black Lion Street was built around 1545 ... #streetart #brighton (à The Lanes, Brighton) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqAu00DIOWw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Each piece is designed to evoke a different atmosphere. Every detail is thought out to give an air of theatricality to the whole. Ominous snakes and dragons in scarlet red and gold in the music room succeed bronze and soft green palm trees in the adjacent quiet room. By visiting the private apartments of the king, we discover a much more sober style … compared to the rest! #brighton (à Royal Pavilion Brighton) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqAs0wvoXG6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A convalescent home transformed into an extravagant palace While he was still only a prince, the court doctors recommended that the Prince of Wales stay by the sea to treat his fragile health. He then settled on a farm in the modest fishing town of #brighton in 1783. Far from the constraints of the court, the prince took pleasure in this seaside resort and in 1787 ordered the construction of new buildings on the site. But, during the works, the prince becomes prince-regent then king. His ambitions then take on another dimension. The palace must now reflect its new stature. Also, he commissioned the architect John Nash to build a building that could both accommodate prestigious official delegations and provide a setting out of sight for him and his entourage.
