Zero waste isn't just about trying not to create extra waste, it's about not wasting the things you have.
If you live in the United States and are of majority age, you have the right to vote.
Don't fucking waste it.

the number of Americans who think they can just move to somewhere else - my social media feeds everywhere (except tumblr, but I’ve seen it here too) is flooded with Americans asking whether they qualify as citizens bc their great great grandpa was from [insert European country] or which area in Scotland has best weather or which southern European country has cheapest rent or how to get a marriage visa to a Nordic country
my dudes. you can’t. there’s no “I’ll just move elsewhere” about this. Europe generally speaking is hostile to immigrants even from within Europe. unfortunately for you, you will have to stay and keep voting and keep working to make your country a better place. I’m sorry it’s hard. it is what it is.

Lauren Gambino at The Guardian:
Joe Biden on Tuesday announced an expansive new plan to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented spouses of US citizens, calling it a “commonsense fix” that would provide relief to more than half a million “mixed-status” families in the country. The move comes as the Democratic president tries to strike a balance before the 5 November election: confronting rising public concern over the unprecedented levels of migration at the southern border, while appeasing progressive Democrats and Hispanic leaders furious over Biden’s aggressive asylum crackdown, which they likened to Trump-era policies. The children of undocumented immigrants married to US citizens could also qualify under the new process. Biden said the plan reflected his commitment to “keeping families together”, an effort to draw a clear distinction with Donald Trump, whose “zero tolerance” border policies separated thousands of children from their parents.
“This action is a better way,” the president said on Tuesday, surrounded by Democratic lawmakers and immigration rights advocates. “It doesn’t tear families apart.” Biden unveiled his plans at a celebratory White House event marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or Daca, which shields from deportation nearly 530,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that approximately 500,000 undocumented spouses and 50,000 children under the age of 21 – the stepchildren of US citizens – could potentially benefit. According to the administration, those eligible for this process have resided in the US for an average of 23 years.
“Living in United States all this time with the fear and uncertainty,” Biden said. “We can fix that.” The East Room of the White House erupted in applause. “¡Sí se puede!” an attendee shouted, after the president finished speaking. Under the plan, undocumented immigrants who have resided in the US for 10 or more years, as of 17 June, and are legally married to a US citizen will be newly eligible to pursue legal status while living and working in the US. Couples do not need to have been married for any specific amount of time, but only those who meet the requirements as of Monday are eligible. Marrying a US citizen typically opens a pathway to citizenship. But people who entered the country illegally must first leave the US before they can apply for permanent residency – a process that can take years. As a result, many choose to stay and risk deportation rather than leave their families. The policy essentially allows the government to “admit” these immigrants and begin the status-adjustment process in the US.
President Joe Biden (D) announces that he is pledging to support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented spouses and children of US citizens.
To be eligible, undocumented immigrants who have resided in the US for 10 or more years and be married to a US citizen.

an important writing question to ask yourself is "how much time and effort do i want to put into figuring out what this character's legal documents would look like"
#newt has THE MOST BULLSHIT COMPLICATED backstory for this i stg#born out of wedlock in west germany in 1990 when the two germanies were IN THE MIDDLE of reuniting but not done yet#and then almost immediately moved to the united states with his dad because his parents broke up#which seems to imply his dad got full custody?? which seems at least a little weird for the time period#could not figure out if it was even legally plausible because TWO GERMANIES#but both parents wanted his dad to have full custody so like... maybe??#anyway what fucking citizenship does he have. i dont even know#was thinking dual but germany doesnt like dual#so that might only work if his dad transmitted american citizenship to him like a bloodline curse#but i think that only works if his dad was already a citizen when he was born and his dad is german so THAT would mean-#*insert that one gif of charlie day with the pepe sylvia conspiracy board*#so maybe he just has american citizenship???#i dont know how that works either...#and then when im writing him hes trans on top of all that#which makes all this relevant unfortunately! could this man have gotten a legal name change circa 2010?#i THINK so?? im probably just going to handwave it?? but AARGH#i dont LIKE handwaving these things because like#anachronisms with trans characters & the transition process always bug me a bit#im almost 10 years younger than newt but i remember shit was DIFFERENT even back in like. 2014.#this isnt a legal thing but i remember before there was a nonbinary pride flag. we shared the purple-white-green genderqueer one#well. 'we' including me at the time. im a man now#and surgery has changed! no-nip top surgery was really rare to hear about before like... even just a few years ago?#im sure it was happening but it's way more common now than it was in like 2020#and i didnt even know trans people existed until like 2010#the first time i saw a trans character in ANY work of fiction was 2011#personal#unscientific aside#im way off on a tangent now i forget if i was going to say anything else#good enough hit post
