Saturday, October 19, 2024 - Kamala Harris
Colin Allred, Beto O'Rourke, Stacey Plaskett, Laura Kelly, and the Vice President took the campaign to El Paso, TX to close out the campaigns swing through Texas. The 'official' schedule of today's events is below.
El Paso, TX (Event #1) Event Location: Paso Del Norte Event Type: Facility Tour Event Time: 8:00 -11:00 MT *The campaign took a facility tour of both the footbridge at the Paso Del Norte Bridge and the nearby US Customs and Border Protection building. Securing the border and reforming the immigration system are peak priorities for the Harris-Walz Campaign. We look forward to working with congress to find a solution to a problem that has been continued due to President Donald Trump axing a bipartisan bill.
El Paso, TX (Event #2) Event Location: University of Texas at El Paso Event Type: Get Out the Vote Event Time: 14:00 - 17:00 MT *The campaign held a Get Out the Vote campaign on-campus at UTEP today. We met with several students, faculty members, and community members alike. The campaign was positively received.

This does not surprise me in the least. We have homes near UTEP whose foundations are made of tombstones. I won't be surprised if there are more to be found later.  The older portions of El Paso may still contain tombstones or just bodies beneath them.
Francisco "Pancho" Villa ran through this city and often battled against the military stationed here at Ft. Bliss. There were even pictures of him visiting U.S. Brigadier General John J. Pershing at his home. I honestly wish I had pictures of the home because it is still being used by the Commander of Ft. Bliss and not far away is another really nice home nearby for the Vice Commander.
But yeah, I found this interesting and I thought to share it.

Anita Blair was the first guide dog handler in El Paso, Texas, when she graduated from The Seeing Eye in March 1940 with Fawn, a German shepherd. The photo is a black and white photo of Anita being guided by Fawn across a bustling city street in the early 1940s.
Just a month later, Anita and Fawn were crossing a street in El Paso when a car nearly hit her. “Fawn, the fawn-colored German shepherd, with perfect timing checked her mistress’s pace, so that the car sped past without the driver being aware that the young woman could not see,” the El Paso Times reported on April 19, 1940.
Fawn was at her side when she graduated from the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy – now known as the University of Texas at El Paso, or UTEP – with a bachelor’s degree in 1944. She later earned a master’s degree from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman’s University, in Denton.
In 1946, Anita and Fawn were again in the news during a tragic fire at the 23-story Hotel LaSalle in Chicago. According to the June 6, 1946, issue of the El Paso Times, Anita was awakened by screams. “When I opened the door the smoke was so heavy I could taste it,” Anita told the newspaper. “I closed the door but did not want to get Fawn excited. Because of her I remained calm – and probably because of me she did the same.”
Fawn led Anita out the window and down the fire escape – 11 stories down – while the fire raged. Sixty-one people were killed in the fire.
In 1952, Anita became the first El Paso woman – and the first blind woman in any state – to be elected as a state representative. During her time in office, Anita fought for funding for the State School for the Deaf, teacher pay raises, and a bill that allowed women to serve on juries.
Anita returned to The Seeing Eye five more times to be matched with successor Seeing Eye dogs. Her last was Beryl, a black Labrador retriever, in 1990. Anita died in 2010 at the age of 93, and in recognition of her service as a state legislator, is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

A study from The University of Texas at El Paso reveals a gender disparity in prison infractions that disproportionately affects women. The study, led by Melinda Tasca, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Security Studies at UTEP, and published in Justice Quarterly, analyzed the disciplinary infraction records of more than 20,000 males and females in a large western state prison, who were released between 2010 and 2013. The researchers set out to answer three questions: 1) whether women were more likely than men to receive defiance infractions; 2) whether women received a greater number of defiance infractions than men; and 3) whether the gender differences observed for defiance were unique from other types of infractions (e.g., nonviolent and violent). Defiance acts are the most minor of rule violations and are often verbal in nature, including disrespect, being disruptive or disobeying an order. Defiance infractions can also come as the result of committing unallowed consensual contact, unauthorized altering of one's appearance, or failing to adhere to hygiene requirements. "Despite being minor violations, defiance infractions can have profound consequences," Tasca said. Individuals found guilty of defiance infractions may be subject to solitary confinement, be denied phone calls and visits with loved ones, and be negatively impacted when it comes to parole board decisions.
