The French capital faces an unprecedented emergency housing crisis. Parisā homelessness hotline ā the 115 ā receives roughly 13,500 calls every day, but only 10 percent of callers are able to get emergency housing. Every evening at 6 p.m., dozens of unhoused people flock to the HĆ“tel de Ville in central Paris, where the charity Utopia 56 helps match them with Parisians who have a spare bed ā but the association is overwhelmed by demand. Meanwhile, evictions of informal living spaces in the Ćle-de-France region ā which includes Paris and its suburbsĀ ā doubled over the past four years. The number of unhoused people increased by about 500 in the past year.
The approach of the Olympic Games has exacerbated these trends. Statistics from civil rights groups show a troubling rise in evictions over the past year as the city has prepared for the global event that will bring 14 million tourists to Paris starting in late July. While official numbers on displacement are hard to come by, the Observatory on Evictions from Informal Living Spaces, a research group, counted 138 expulsions in the Ćle-de-France between April 2023 and May 2024, affecting roughly 12,545 people, an increase of about 40 percent compared with two years prior. A government spokesperson, Christophe NoĆ«l du Payrat, told the New York Times that authorities had evicted roughly 5,000 people in the past year, most of them single men.
For this story, I spoke with more than a dozen unhoused or precariously housed Paris residents, as well as charity workers, researchers and public officials. The upcoming Olympics, they all suggested, have provided Paris a neat deadline for accelerating processes of urban renewal ā and displacement ā that were already underway in an effort to sanitize the city for tourists. The Games, which the International Olympic Committee have hailed as a ānew modelā that is at once āambitious, spectacular, open to all, but also more responsible, more sustainable, more supportive and more inclusive,ā could have been an opportunity to address chronic homelessness, they lamented. Instead, the city started ramping up evictions.
#the city of paris is not just evicting people from informal dwellings & violently clearing streets#they are also busing people to other cities which aren't really prepared to offer assistance - separating them from jobs & connections#paris olympics#this is typical of every olympics! the city of atlanta bought unhoused folks one-way bus tickets. evil shit & for what?#one of the cases this article talks about is a group of 250ish young people who occupied a city theater & demanded housing#they've been offered & accepted temporary placements in city gyms through the end of the paralympic games#but for some reason it's really gotten me that one of them was wearing a curry jersey in the article photo#like steph curry is proud to show up & try to win a gold medal & his chance to do that is being bought with eviction & displacement#to say nothing of the financial & environmental ramifications which inevitably follow the games which are unavoidably wasteful

went to japanfest + some of the stores in the convention area today!
we had a blast--got to see awesome taiko and sumo performances, some beautiful bonsai (the one pictured is 65 years old, but one was over 100!!), ate lots of tasty food, spent too much money a lot of fun stuff, including some rose green tea i'm about to go brew for myself. i'm absolutely wiped, but i wanna have some tea and play a little cyberpunk before i crash, likely very early for a saturday night :3
#this is one of those 'atlanta' events that's actually like an hour outside of the city lmao#so we dont really get out that way too often#but i think we're gonna plan a little day trip out that way when the weather cools down some more#t: wench irl

i don't think there is anything as overdiscussed on the reddit as team names and logos
#would you hate me if i said that i like pwhl montreal as a team name#like i know that's not the way of sports but like every soccer team is just city fc or some variation#well i guess half in the nwsl have another piece#but like chelsea fc is just the name of the place#and looking at the wnba most of those mascots are not good#ellie excluded#honestly i feel like the aces liberty and storm are the only ones that are really solid with their name / branding#shout out to atlanta and phoenix who are also solid#and i understand why the connecticut sun are the sun#but it really fucks me up that there is a team from connecticut and a team called the mystics and they are not the same team#because of mystic seaport#seattle because all the teams are plays on the weather which i think is really cool#like the reign [double meaning rain] storm sounders kraken mariners seahawks they all go together#boston and philly don't have that#i do like that all the women's teams out of new york have the same colors that's fun

So the one reason to go to Arkansas is to drive through a town named "Flippin," where everything sounds like a euphemism. Flippin Fire Dept. Flippin School. Flippin Police. Etc.
While that does sound charming, I don't know that justifies a trip to Arkansas
#when I was considering moving to georgia#a place I had not been yet#I was at this hole in the wall thai restaurant with a friend#and the tables were soooo close together#and there was a couple next to us#and the one boyfriend was just like hissing that he was NOT going to move to Arkansas#he didn't care HOW good his bf's job offer was#he was NOT GOING#he could get a job ANYWHERE ELSE#and while GA is not quite on the same level as Arkansas I was like gosh that is what i'm feeling right now#it's soooo far south#anyway I did move to GA and it was fine#although that feels disingenuous#I very rarely left the city and in the city I very rarely met anyone who was actually FROM GA#this one time I stopped for gas in what is apparently a small shitty town#and I'm white but apparently I was OBVIOUSLY not from around there#because there were like five old men sitting at the bar of the little gas station restaurant#who stopped talking when I walked in and just... watched me#as I bought a snack for the road and asked where the bathroom was#just silently disapprovingly watching this outsider... utilize a gas station#the girl working the register seemed apologetic#when i went back out to my car I could see all them watching me from the window#so I do think there are parts of GA that straight up suck#and had I been a different race I think my safety would have been in question that day#but Atlanta was fine for the most part#weirdly full of people from Chicago

Was talking about this with Natalia yesterday but one thing I've noticed moving out west from someone who's lived in the deep south her whole life is that everyone here is so. I guess the best word is unfriendly? Not like rude but I mean like from a southerners stand point it comes off as rude. I know it's just a culture difference but every time I've gone to the doctor or even just like cashiers at the store you try to start a conversation and are shot down pretty hard when I like didn't even want to talk much I just wanted to be friendly it's what you do in public but then I'm like damn maybe it's just something you do in the south where southern hospitality is ingrained in every person from infancy and they instead are mad at you for daring to speak beyond what is contractually required in the social situation
#this is coming from someone with social anxiety too like i dont even like talking#but i especially don't like being shot down the moment i Do try to talk#the lady doing my health screeninf yesterday was so like terse and the guy who did it last year was even worse#and the lady at the front desk of where i got my labs done was the exact same way#and im just out here desperately trying to be friendly :c#maybe rather than a western thing maybe its a big city thing?#idk its really frustrating though#although i Know that atlanta derogatory isnt like this so idk

Thank you for being so nice!!! I think my main goal right now is to figure out which parts of the city are most comfortable to walk in alone? I live in an area now where Iāve had really uncomfortable encounters on my own street and like I donāt let it stop me from living my life but Iād like to be somewhere with a higher level of foot traffic if possible, I would feel much more comfortable if there were more people around! This will ofc be my first big kid job though so Iām really not going to be all that picky. Iād say my biggest complaint about Atlanta is that if you really want to do anything besides hit up the aquarium and some museums you have to leave the city- the surrounding burbs have waaaaay more to do for entertainment and shopping. So I definitely want to live somewhere a bit more dense. But Iām also not into like night life at all so really Iām looking for like bookstores and park vibes ya know? And what would you say the general vibe is of the culture there? Atlanta is so diverse and wonderful and the Chinese food is out of this world (very important to me) but people are so mean, I stg you walk into an establishment and they do not mind telling you they hate having you LOL I miss midwestern charm so much. I miss the Great Lakes. I miss Meijer š©
I do think Chicagoans are VERY nice in comparison to other big cities. You should see me in LA HAHAHA- I know Californian's won't like this but they are SO rude in comparison. I had a man cut through a group of people walking slow (annoying), slam into me, and just keep going without even saying sorry even though he knocked me down. It's why I can't leave the Midwest. People are genuinely nice.
Chicago is also VERY diverse- you get all the benefits of living in a big city in terms of food. Chicago is filled with incredible food- whatever you like to eat, you can find it with relative ease (including a Chicago style hotdog).
In terms of where you want to live, I think it really depends on just what you're hoping to get out of the city and what you want to be close to. That'll also influence cost. I don't think I'd ever want to be in the main part of "downtown" or the more touristy areas because traffic is always a nightmare and people are confused + all over the sidewalks.
I'm linking THIS guide here for safest neighborhoods (ignore the first part about the 'burbs) so you could google them and see what's nearby and then kind of go from there? Take it all with a grain of salt, but if you see some neighborhoods you like you can check out whats around them and also visit and get a feel for the area!
#im always trying to convince people to come back to the midwest#its the last place in america you can pay your rent and groceries#people for some reason think the midwest is filled with white people exclusively but its really not- even outside cities its not#and illinois isnt the worst state to live in (i think thats arkansas lmao)#(no hate to arkansas because I ADORE little rock and would live there if the politics werent so heinous)#ALSO oof to Atlanta because I like Atlanta but the people there are so standoffish and mean??#finding a place to eat is also weirdly so hard

ouuhgh one of my fav artists is playing nearby in a week and im so torn. I could get tickets, theyre actually reasonably priced..but its a 3 hour drive there (then the drive back) and id be going alone and then id have to ask my mom if I could use her car...I've never been to a concert alone and have no idea how my anxiety would do. but also what if she never performs near here again š
#i used to go to concerts all the time before 2020 yk and havent been since 2019ish so.#id ask my sister to go with me but she literally has a parent/teacher conference thing that night and thn has to work...Sads#really the trying to drive in a big city is what is wigging me out ngl#i guess theres no reason i couldnt get a hotel if i didnt wanna drive 6 hours in one day (likely more bc atlanta is a fuck abt traffic)#i should be saving money tho aaaaaugh#would it b problematic of me to say i miss just getting men to pay for my shit like this LMAO.#sanchoyorambles

had a lovely time with my visiting relatives. that being said i'm currently remembering when my other cousin visited last summer and we were looking at the white house and she said "i thought it had a dome". bless her heart.
#we had already seen the capitol. also like who has lived in the us their whole life and doesn't know what those buildings look like#that being said that cousin lives in atlanta and these relatives live in rural nc and it's fun taking people who dont live in a city around#theyre like obsessed w the metro. i love dc but it's fun to see it through other people's eyes too

Fugees have one of my top 5 albums of all time and theyāve been broken up since the nineties but theyāre reuniting w/ Lauryn Hill to go on tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Except theyāre skipping the entire US south which means I would need to drive 7-9 hours to see them even though this tour is literally a dream come true/once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Actually genuinely considering doing it but christ is that an undertakingā¦eeek
#like not even a teeny lil Atlanta stopā¦pleeeeeeease#also Iām so sorry to ppl in regions where most artists donāt tour. my southern US struggle is peanuts compared to yours :-(#also like I have to go to Charlotte or Nasheville to see **** and thatās ugggghgggh#at least Nick Cave comes to my tiny ass town for some reason?#i mean itās a ācityā but itās a city the way that like an inclined plane is a machine. you know#unpopular opinion among my mutuals but I find the whole process of concerts to be incredibly overwhelming so I donāt go unless theyāre like#my favorite artists ever and now that I donāt live in a big city like PGH/Boston the added barrier of traveling to a different city makes#it a really big commitment thatās hard for me lol#itās bc of the autismā¦ā¦ā¦..#and having three come up in Sept/Oct is overwhelming me to a huge degree lol#itās one reason Iām glad I listen to a lot of really old music lol#I have been to some shows of my friends since moving here but the last like well known artist I saw was Roger Waters like over a year ago#I saw a lot more before that though and a lot were super important artists to me and Iām glad I saw them and my bucket list is dwindling#which is so nice!!#Iāve literally seen Bob Dylan and Parliament Funkadelic likeā¦Iām good I can retire whenever#so so so sad Iāll never see ATCQ though#luckily whichever city I decide to see Fugees in if I do end up going I have friends I can crash with and stuff#Bon Iver is one of the last on my bucket list and I would looooooooove to see Radiohead too
