The French capital faces an unprecedented emergency housing crisis. Parisā€™ homelessness hotline ā€” the 115 ā€” receives roughly 13,500 calls every day, but only 10 percent of callers are able to get emergency housing. Every evening at 6 p.m., dozens of unhoused people flock to the HĆ“tel de Ville in central Paris, where the charity Utopia 56 helps match them with Parisians who have a spare bed ā€” but the association is overwhelmed by demand. Meanwhile, evictions of informal living spaces in the Ǝle-de-France region ā€” which includes Paris and its suburbsĀ ā€” doubled over the past four years. The number of unhoused people increased by about 500 in the past year.
The approach of the Olympic Games has exacerbated these trends. Statistics from civil rights groups show a troubling rise in evictions over the past year as the city has prepared for the global event that will bring 14 million tourists to Paris starting in late July. While official numbers on displacement are hard to come by, the Observatory on Evictions from Informal Living Spaces, a research group, counted 138 expulsions in the Ǝle-de-France between April 2023 and May 2024, affecting roughly 12,545 people, an increase of about 40 percent compared with two years prior. A government spokesperson, Christophe NoĆ«l du Payrat, told the New York Times that authorities had evicted roughly 5,000 people in the past year, most of them single men.
For this story, I spoke with more than a dozen unhoused or precariously housed Paris residents, as well as charity workers, researchers and public officials. The upcoming Olympics, they all suggested, have provided Paris a neat deadline for accelerating processes of urban renewal ā€” and displacement ā€” that were already underway in an effort to sanitize the city for tourists. The Games, which the International Olympic Committee have hailed as a ā€œnew modelā€ that is at once ā€œambitious, spectacular, open to all, but also more responsible, more sustainable, more supportive and more inclusive,ā€ could have been an opportunity to address chronic homelessness, they lamented. Instead, the city started ramping up evictions.

went to japanfest + some of the stores in the convention area today!
we had a blast--got to see awesome taiko and sumo performances, some beautiful bonsai (the one pictured is 65 years old, but one was over 100!!), ate lots of tasty food, spent too much money a lot of fun stuff, including some rose green tea i'm about to go brew for myself. i'm absolutely wiped, but i wanna have some tea and play a little cyberpunk before i crash, likely very early for a saturday night :3

So the one reason to go to Arkansas is to drive through a town named "Flippin," where everything sounds like a euphemism. Flippin Fire Dept. Flippin School. Flippin Police. Etc.
While that does sound charming, I don't know that justifies a trip to Arkansas

Was talking about this with Natalia yesterday but one thing I've noticed moving out west from someone who's lived in the deep south her whole life is that everyone here is so. I guess the best word is unfriendly? Not like rude but I mean like from a southerners stand point it comes off as rude. I know it's just a culture difference but every time I've gone to the doctor or even just like cashiers at the store you try to start a conversation and are shot down pretty hard when I like didn't even want to talk much I just wanted to be friendly it's what you do in public but then I'm like damn maybe it's just something you do in the south where southern hospitality is ingrained in every person from infancy and they instead are mad at you for daring to speak beyond what is contractually required in the social situation

Thank you for being so nice!!! I think my main goal right now is to figure out which parts of the city are most comfortable to walk in alone? I live in an area now where Iā€™ve had really uncomfortable encounters on my own street and like I donā€™t let it stop me from living my life but Iā€™d like to be somewhere with a higher level of foot traffic if possible, I would feel much more comfortable if there were more people around! This will ofc be my first big kid job though so Iā€™m really not going to be all that picky. Iā€™d say my biggest complaint about Atlanta is that if you really want to do anything besides hit up the aquarium and some museums you have to leave the city- the surrounding burbs have waaaaay more to do for entertainment and shopping. So I definitely want to live somewhere a bit more dense. But Iā€™m also not into like night life at all so really Iā€™m looking for like bookstores and park vibes ya know? And what would you say the general vibe is of the culture there? Atlanta is so diverse and wonderful and the Chinese food is out of this world (very important to me) but people are so mean, I stg you walk into an establishment and they do not mind telling you they hate having you LOL I miss midwestern charm so much. I miss the Great Lakes. I miss Meijer šŸ˜©
I do think Chicagoans are VERY nice in comparison to other big cities. You should see me in LA HAHAHA- I know Californian's won't like this but they are SO rude in comparison. I had a man cut through a group of people walking slow (annoying), slam into me, and just keep going without even saying sorry even though he knocked me down. It's why I can't leave the Midwest. People are genuinely nice.
Chicago is also VERY diverse- you get all the benefits of living in a big city in terms of food. Chicago is filled with incredible food- whatever you like to eat, you can find it with relative ease (including a Chicago style hotdog).
In terms of where you want to live, I think it really depends on just what you're hoping to get out of the city and what you want to be close to. That'll also influence cost. I don't think I'd ever want to be in the main part of "downtown" or the more touristy areas because traffic is always a nightmare and people are confused + all over the sidewalks.
I'm linking THIS guide here for safest neighborhoods (ignore the first part about the 'burbs) so you could google them and see what's nearby and then kind of go from there? Take it all with a grain of salt, but if you see some neighborhoods you like you can check out whats around them and also visit and get a feel for the area!

ouuhgh one of my fav artists is playing nearby in a week and im so torn. I could get tickets, theyre actually reasonably priced..but its a 3 hour drive there (then the drive back) and id be going alone and then id have to ask my mom if I could use her car...I've never been to a concert alone and have no idea how my anxiety would do. but also what if she never performs near here again šŸ˜”

Fugees have one of my top 5 albums of all time and theyā€™ve been broken up since the nineties but theyā€™re reuniting w/ Lauryn Hill to go on tour!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Except theyā€™re skipping the entire US south which means I would need to drive 7-9 hours to see them even though this tour is literally a dream come true/once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Actually genuinely considering doing it but christ is that an undertakingā€¦eeek
#like not even a teeny lil Atlanta stopā€¦pleeeeeeease#also Iā€™m so sorry to ppl in regions where most artists donā€™t tour. my southern US struggle is peanuts compared to yours :-(#also like I have to go to Charlotte or Nasheville to see **** and thatā€™s ugggghgggh#at least Nick Cave comes to my tiny ass town for some reason?#i mean itā€™s a ā€˜cityā€™ but itā€™s a city the way that like an inclined plane is a machine. you know#unpopular opinion among my mutuals but I find the whole process of concerts to be incredibly overwhelming so I donā€™t go unless theyā€™re like#my favorite artists ever and now that I donā€™t live in a big city like PGH/Boston the added barrier of traveling to a different city makes#it a really big commitment thatā€™s hard for me lol#itā€™s bc of the autismā€¦ā€¦ā€¦..#and having three come up in Sept/Oct is overwhelming me to a huge degree lol#itā€™s one reason Iā€™m glad I listen to a lot of really old music lol#I have been to some shows of my friends since moving here but the last like well known artist I saw was Roger Waters like over a year ago#I saw a lot more before that though and a lot were super important artists to me and Iā€™m glad I saw them and my bucket list is dwindling#which is so nice!!#Iā€™ve literally seen Bob Dylan and Parliament Funkadelic likeā€¦Iā€™m good I can retire whenever#so so so sad Iā€™ll never see ATCQ though#luckily whichever city I decide to see Fugees in if I do end up going I have friends I can crash with and stuff#Bon Iver is one of the last on my bucket list and I would looooooooove to see Radiohead too
