Leaf Peeping: an unnecessarily in-depth analysis

Prompt: ‘leaf peeping’ from HarriscoFest 2018 @heckyeahharrisco

It’s not that Cisco didn’t know what leaf peeping was. He’d heard of it. Seen a tree or two change color in his time. Wikipedia even had an article on it.

What he couldn’t figure out was why Harry would jump so quickly to leaf peeping as something he couldn’t “suck the fun out of”. So when the crisis of the day was over, Cisco did what his engineering brain did best: he laid out the facts and ran scenarios. His final write up went like this.

Fact: the following dialogue took place:

Me: Is there anything you can't suck the fun out of? Harry: Leaf peeping.

What can we learn from this? Potential options:

Universal appeal: Leaf peeping is so enjoyable that no one could suck the fun out of it

Personal appeal: Harry himself enjoys leaf peeping so much that he, personally, can’t suck the fun out of it

Resilience: Fun is a difficult thing to suck out of leaf peeping, i.e. it is a logistically sound and dependable thing that is not easily subject to change. Or sucking.

Fact: Leaf peeping is traveling to look at fall foliage in regions where the leaves dramatically change colors with the seasons (source: Wikipedia).

How does this information affect the three options from above? Consider:

Universal appeal: Sure, looking at colorful leaves is fun. A widespread popular appeal is feasible, though perhaps not universal. There’s probably some tree-hating person who could suck the fun out of it.

Personal appeal: Harry might secretly be a nature enthusiast, or maybe he has good memories of leaf peeping so it consistently makes him happy. Entirely feasible.

Resilience: Lots of things could go wrong. Windstorm the day before, too early, too late, too cold, colors not as vibrant as hoped, etc. Plenty to complain about if you wanted to. So, option 3 is less feasible. Also, the capacity for things to go wrong supports the dubious feasibility of option 1 (universal appeal). There are probably some people who would be irritated by logistical challenges of leaf peeping.

Conclusion: Option 2, Personal appeal. Harry personally likes leaf peeping, and this is the reason he can’t suck the fun out of it.

“Hey Harry,” Cisco called across the lab. “Why you like leaf peeping?”

“What? Everyone likes leaf peeping,” replied Harry, busy copying equations onto one of the drawing boards.

“You don’t know that,” Cisco said, “It’s not like there are studies on leaf-peeping appeal. So why do you like leaf peeping?”

Harry gave him an odd look, but answered, “I’ve been taking Jesse to see the Great Sunset Cascade every year since she was 8. Never fails to impress.” He looked a little sad, then continued, “We missed last year because of Zoom.”

“Ah.” Cisco double-circled Option 2: Personal appeal and scribbled ‘great sunset cascade. Earth-2 phenomenon?’.

“Why exactly is this important?” Harry squinted at him.

“No reason,” Cisco shrugged, taking on a bored affect.

He then carried out a rather excellent bit of misdirection (if he did say so himself) by crumpling up his Leaf Peeping Analysis and leaning back in his chair to play catch with it. Harry rolled his eyes and went back to the equations on the drawing board.

When Harry left the lab some time later, Cisco smoothed the paper back out and started running searches for “great sunset cascade” and “best leaf peeping near Central City”.

Harry and Jesse weren’t going to miss leaf peeping this year, not if Cisco had anything to say about it.

I would love it if on Earth-2, leaf peeping was actually a euphemism or just an entirely different concept from Earth-1 leaf peeping. What would it even mean?? Okay, that’s gonna get its own post at some point...
