If you live in Port Leiry long enough, chances are you're gonna know a dead body sooner or later. Maybe it's a neighbor, a friend, or family. Lots of times, the animal attacks are tourists who didn't know the local customs. But everyone within the city's borders has some story, some brush with death that's got you scared or angry or, sometimes worse, resigned to the way things are here.

It was late when the body was called in, and normally Arleen would be back at base waiting for the intel to come in. But being her unit's so-called 'animal attack expert', she's asked to come evaluate the peculiar sight of the victim. Head to toe bites. Enough of a body not to be a reckless wolf tearing at its dinner. It's not a full moon either, so that knocks out a wave of mutts from suspicion -- lucky them. Still, even on werewolf turf, this has the marks of some other beast about it.

Not even considering that eye marking or the strange note. No, definitely not a wolf, who has the time for that sort of thing? Aside from the general stench of death, it reeks of another bloodsucker stunt like what they pulled at the Masquerade, and it's got the hairs on her neck standing on edge.

"This is an active crime scene," she says to someone standing by the lash of yellow tape cutting through the park. Her voice is clear in the cold dark as her team takes the photos they need before they hand over the body to the coroner's office for further investigation. The area around the body is well cordoned off, no civilian could get close enough for a look now -- but that didn't stop hopefuls, or the morbidly curious.
