Initial Survey Info & Response to Cinemagraph
Do you think this cinemagraph communicates a message?
Yes
If you answered yes to the question above, what do you think it communicates?
I would put these two questions together. There are a number of connotations throughout the image. The forest: symboloises calmness, nature but also isolatoin, fright. The Rose: symbolizes love, passion, a gesture of love, a gift - the burning rose could symbolise lust, false adoration, a lie. The mirror: could reflect the truth - the rose is burning in the reflection, maybe the person is guilty of adultery, giving into temptation of lust and holding back the truth to a commited partner… all of it together communicated a message of someone giving into the temptation of lust, feeling isolated in their current relationship but living a lie and continuing to pretend to love.
 Do these cinemagraphs look professional?
Yes
Would this cinemagraph catch your eye on social media?
Yes
 Why? / Why not?
yes and no.
On a personal social media - would be slightly intrigued, but probably wouldn’t be looking / expected such content.
On more of a commerical / artists page or profile on social media - I would be taking more time to look at and interpret every post - because of the fine art approach.
In addition I wish we had made the piece slightly brighter or at least upped the saturation as while the GIF is supposed to have a erie mood to it, it looks a little flat and grey how it is now.
Do you think the cinemagraph is well edited?
Yes
Is the concept behind this cinemagraph obvious?
Yes
What does this cinemagraph make you think of?
You don’t need q.7
Make room for a comment for q.6
And see question 5 for answer.
Do you think this cinemagraph is creative and original?
It does use a flame - which is a very well practiced moving element of a cinemagraph - so in that technical / content context - No. However - because you have thought about location, models, mirrors - this helps make it more original and create more narrative around your cinemagraph
How do you think this cinemagraph could be improved?
You could have used a different model, slightly disjointed Tom was the model. A model with character and dressed up would have given the cinemgraph a bigger narrative and might have been easier to read (visually). The post production element is good, however you could have avoided the mirror moving on location which may have improved your final cinemagraph. The location is good, however, you could have shot it at a different location - with more dramatic features of a forest. Other than that, good game!

Task 3: Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail
Idea number 1:
Tumblr media
For idea generation number 1, I decided to create a Cinemagraph of traffic lights. This idea is not only in response to the theme “Nottingham in Motion”, but also the fact that there is a history of the invented traffic lights.
My initial idea for this is to only capture the traffic light continuously flashing amber lights in a never-ending loop while the vehicles are completely still. This idea is great; however, it is not exciting and engaging to the audience. Therefore, I came up with another idea by having the traffic lights always staying on green while the background is completely blurred - showing moving cars in a never-ending loop.
The problem with this idea is that the traffic lights are close to the road - meaning that I will not be able to achieve the shallow depth of field as I originally wanted. Therefore, to solve the problem, I decided to add a smartphone which I will be holding it in a capture mode. This will show the traffic lights on the smartphone, and I could still have the background completely blurred.
How is your Cinemagraph creative?
I believe this Cinemagraph is creative because there is the history behind the idea. Moreover, this idea is unusual in a way which would make people interested in the scene. This is because I have the element of a smartphone with the traffic lights on and the blurred background which could make people curious what was going on behind the scene.
What is your inspiration behind this idea?
My inspirations come from researching the history of Nottingham. I found that in 1866, John Peake first invented traffic lights and came up with a solution as many people were killed on the roads.
As I found out about the history, the idea was developed from there by doing the sketches and solving the problems.
What equipment will you need?
The equipment that I will need for this idea number 1 is a smartphone, DSLR and a tripod.
Idea number 2:
Tumblr media
This idea generation number 2 is a little simpler than idea number 1. However, I decided on this idea because of the location - Memorial Gardens. It was not only attractive but also the fact that the site is used to commemorate the people who died during world war 1.
The idea for this Cinemagraph is simple as I will be locating in the middle of the site - showing the entire perspective of the building. The element which is going to be moving is the water fountain as that was the only element that I could incorporate and make it interesting. The water will keep running, while everything in the background will be completely still.
How is your Cinemagraph creative?
This idea is creative because of the uses of the site in response to “Nottingham in Motion”. Although there isn’t much that is going to be moving; that still doesn’t change the fact that I could make this interesting. I wanted people to recognise this place more as it is showing respect to the dead. It’s a beautiful history behind Nottingham, and I believe it could bring out many interests to the audience as well.
What is your inspiration behind this idea?
My inspiration for this idea number 2 is similar to number 1. I researched as much as I could on the history of Nottingham. One of the places pique my interest, that is - Memorial Gardens. The reason is that many people have died because of world war 1, and merely this site showing the respect to the dead is amazing. Therefore, I wanted many people to know more about the place and respect more to the dead who protected our country.
What equipment will you need?
There isn’t much equipment that I needed with me - only a tripod and a DSLR.
Idea number 3:
Tumblr media
Finally, for my idea generation number 3, I decided it to be more simple. The location which I would use to shoot this Cinemagraph is Nottingham canal.
The idea is to find an interesting perspective and shoot from there - capturing the people, the boat and the water. The element which will move in a never-ending loop is the water. Everything in the background, for instance, the people and the boat will be completely still.
How is your Cinemagraph creative?
I believe my idea for this number 3 is creative as the shot will be at an interesting angle. This is to show the exciting elements such as the people, the boat and the water. By combining these three elements, I believe the Cinemagraph will come out interesting and creative.
What is your inspiration behind this idea?
My inspiration for this idea is found by accident. In 2014, I decided to have a walk with my friend and taking photographs - one of the routes we ended up was along Nottingham canal. I was fascinated with the views and the environment that I just wanted to come back again. However, I had forgotten about the place, and never really went back to it.
After the search for ideas, I found a photograph of Nottingham canal, and it brings back some memories I have there. I wanted to take this opportunity and create an interesting Cinemagraph from the place I loved.
What equipment will you need?
There are two pieces of equipment that I need for this Cinemagraph, which is a tripod and a DSLR.
Project Proposal:
Outline:
To begin the project for the theme “Nottingham in Motion”, I decided to go with the idea number 1. This is because this idea response well to the theme, and moreover, the Cinemagraph could turn out to be interesting as well.
I’ve chosen to create this Cinemgraph in response to the theme “Nottingham in Motion” because traffic lights have been a part of our daily lives, but also get us to and from work safely. It is not a direct response to the theme. However, I’ve decided to use traffic lights because it controls the motion in our everyday life. This includes the safety of crossing the roads as a pedestrian and moreover, the safety of the road users as well.
Plan:
The equipment I would need to create this Cinemagraph is a smartphone, tripod and DSLR.
Depending on the weather, I’d like to shoot my Cinemagraph on a sunny day. I am not sure of the location to be used for this Cinemagraph yet as I could do it anywhere there are traffic lights. However, I do hope to walk around and find an interesting location to be used for the Cinemagraph.
Rationale:
The reason I chose this subject is that of the history behind traffic lights. It was first invented in Nottingham by John Peake in 1866. I found this interesting as without John’s invention, who knows how many lives would have been lost because of the roads.
The message I hope to communicate to the audience is that I wanted people to be more aware of how fantastic traffic lights is and not take it for granted. This is in response to the theme as Nottingham is always in motion. Therefore, I wanted people to be more aware of the traffic lights - use one when you needed to cross the road.
