In February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences faced accusations of sexism and racism for the near-absence of women and racial minorities within its roster of 2015 Oscar nominees. Much of the onus has been placed on the members of the Academy, but many have pointed out that the barriers women and people of colour face in the film industry exist beyond the institution’s bounds.
As a CineCoup Super Fan, the direction in which to investigate systemic inequality in content creation seemed obvious. When compared to traditional studio models, the CineCoup film accelerator is a relatively accessible vehicle. In order for a project to qualify, a group of 3 must come together to pitch a genre film, pay a fee of $60-$120 (depending on time of registration), and create a profile on the platform. Registration doesn’t even require a budget breakdown, production plan, artistic rationale, or many of the other documents emerging filmmakers struggle to deliver to traditional funding entities. So long as projects meet the deadline, they can participate in the first wave of the competition. Only after do fans have a say in what advances and what gets eliminated. Compared to Hollywood and even the traditional Canadian filmmaking institutions to a certain degree, CineCoup is no game of “Who do you know”. So long as you turn in your homework on time, you can participate.
Before presenting my findings, I would like to stress that the research I have conducted is in no way scientific. I decided to stick to investigating gender because of the gendered grammar inherent in the English language. Pronouns are declarations of gender identity that are deeply embedded in the English language and no such parallel can be found for other forms of ethnic, cultural, sexual, and linguistic identities.
The data I retrieved was accumulated by scanning the bios and social media sites of each individual filmmaker for the pronouns by which they referred to themselves. I will be the first to recognize the limitations of this method. As this method is indirect and does not give the opportunity of its subjects to explicitly self-identify in a confidential space, it inadequately acknowledges the full spectrum of gender identity and leans heavily upon a gender binary.
The 2015 CineCoup Film Accelerator kicked off with 73 teams of 3. Of the 219 original participants, fewer than 23% were female. Only 9 of the 73 groups were female majority groups (groups consisting of 2 or 3 female filmmakers). Nearly half of the groups were composed of 3 men whereas less than 5% of groups were exclusively female.
The most common role claimed by female project leads was that of a producer. 26 out of 89 project leads claiming a producer role were women. Women were also proportionally better represented in Marketing/Social Media roles as more than 35% of claimers were women. Female filmmakers remained strikingly underrepresented in arguably the most important creative roles. Less than 25% of project lead writers were women. Only 6 women in all of CineCoup claimed to be working in a directing function.
I would like to remind readers that the level of filtration groups must go through in registration pales in comparison to that experienced in more traditional funding models. So, if this platform is more accessible than any other studio or funding institution, why is there still such a gender imbalance?
Does it have to do with the call for genre films? The kinds of movies that lie under the genre banner are also the kinds of movies that are most likely to depict women as objects of extreme violence and overt sexualization.
Perhaps networks still have a large role to play. “We’ve been making films together since high school” was a recurring narrative within a number of all-male CineCoup teams. It was the story of ComedyCoup winners HumanTown and that narrative seems to gel well with CineCoup’s goals. “What we’re really looking for are strong TEAMS” states CineCoup’s FAQ. Are we seeing the same kind of early film collectives happening in school with girls as we are seeing with boys? If not, what can we do to encourage their formation? What can we do to encourage the formation of mixed-gender film collectives in school?
I remain optimistic that new platforms and alternative funding structures – CineCoup included – can become vehicles for social change. Its mandate of fostering Canadian content creation and audience engagement from coast to coast is already empowering emerging filmmakers that don’t otherwise have access to resources and fans. It’s also given fans who feel inadequately represented in traditional media a chance to find and support content that speaks to them.
However, as CineCoup grows and becomes an institution in its own right, perhaps it can grow to become a resource for women in film. By forging alliances with organizations like Women in Film and Television, leading workshops in social media marketing and audience building, and sponsoring networking events, the studio may be able to have a positive impact on inequality and underrepresentation in film.
With that said, CineCoup does not exist in a vacuum. As the data suggests, there are barriers that exist beyond the reach of individual institutions at play. I hope to see the conversation about underrepresentation in media examine the underlying forms of sexism and racism that exist in the social fabric upon which our educational and filmmaking institutions are built.

Platform Spotlight: CineCoup
CineCoup is a Vancouver-based film studio that hosts a Canada-wide film accelerator in which films create and share content to gather votes and build an audience. The Final 5 will be brought to the Banff World Media Festival to pitch their feature film idea but only one will receive CineCoup’s One Million Dollars of film financing and distribution deal with Cineplex.
It’s like crowdfunding on platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo in that it is a space for projects to test the waters and find an audience. The only difference is that backers are pledging support, not money out of their own pockets. CineCoup incentivizes fan participation with its UberFan contest in which one lucky fan will win a trip to Banff and snag a spot on their panel.
CineCoup’s first feature WolfCop is now out on DVD and VOD and the sequel is already going into production. Their 2nd accelerator is currently underway. THE BIG DEAL will be revealed in the beginning of June 2015.
Definitely a platform to look out for.

Just a couple of months ago Quench went out on a limb and chose our top 5 films in this year’s CineCoup competition. We’re glad to say that 3 of our picks are now in the top 30 (with voting for the top 15 starting on May 4th).
Quench caught up with Elvis Deane, the director of Across All Galaxies — a top 30 project. He talks about his inspirations as a film maker and what it’s like to compete for up to a million dollars in film production money.
Why do you want to make Across All Galaxies?
Because it isn't an idea we've seen explored before. All three of our team members love extraterrestrials and the paranormal for different reasons. Andrew Hopps, the film’s writer, is a giant Ghostbusters fan and came up with the script after talking to his brother — who is an absolute true believer in aliens and ghosts. Sara Miller, our producer, is also a true believer. This Christmas before Andrew's script was on our radar, she went through a big kick of watching Youtube videos about aliens — this was non-stop. I'm more of a classic science-fiction nerd who grew up on Star Trek and Star Wars. I believe in aliens, I just don't know that they would bother with us or even know we're here. The film is about these types of characters — skeptics and true believers, being confronted with alien abductions, flying saucers, and having their beliefs shaken up, all in pretty humorous ways.
What directors inspire you?
I take a lot of inspiration from directors who do things a little differently. There have been a lot of horror comedies, but Edgar Wright brings a level of visual artistry that few other filmmakers can. Alex Proyas has long been my biggest inspiration — Dark City being my favorite film. Even when he directed more mainstream films like I, Robot or Knowing, there was a level of perfection in the visuals that I hope to one day achieve. As much as a good movie is about the story, a great story backed up with stellar visuals is what pushes a film into greatness.
What has it been like to participate in CineCoup?
It’s given us a glimpse of what it's like to develop a large production. Previous to this, Sara and I produced an independent feature film with a $10,000 budget. It was a small film with small settings and a very limited scope. Having the shot at a $1,000,000 production budget means that we are able to dream a little bigger and aim a little higher. The best example of this was CineCoup's Mission 6, which focused on concept art. Any sci-fi nerd loves seeing concept art from a new film. Just recently, Neil Blomkamp's pitch for the new Alien film was greenlit based on the reaction fans had to the concept art. So for me to be able to hand pick a few artists, send them descriptions of what kind of aliens I wanted to see, and get back detailed designs a week later that aren't only cool to look at, but are affordable to have created, that's a dream come true.
What do you want to do next?
We'd like to keep pursuing Across All Galaxies whether we are chosen as the top project or not. We've put a lot of time and energy thinking about this movie universe to just abandon it. We already have plans for a web series and television show that are in the same universe, but can stand on their own within this world. Our Another Angle mission is something else we've thought of spinning off — the tale of an alien crash-landed at Roswell who uses his superior intellect to solve crimes in a film noir world. There is so much to explore in a world where the paranormal and extraterrestrials exist. Beyond the Across All Galaxies universe, we're developing a comedy-horror film and a supernatural thriller that we'll put into production shortly.
