niece’s team - who’s who
now that the kids are back, i’ve had more of an opportunity to get to know my niece’s new team (and arachne). what i’ve learned so far:
- cinders: in the five seconds i knew him before their journey began, all i knew about cinders was that he feared everything, including his own shadow. this is because, i realize now, he had the approximate eyesight of a peanut. now that he can see more than an inch in front of him, he is significantly less jumpy, though still not any more relaxed.
- birthday: birthday’s favorite thing in the entire whole world is using electric moves. the kid says it’s a form of energy regulation; my niece says it’s a display of their unbeatable combined power. i say use the grounding rods, please. you will all love her and despair.
- scully: like most wooper, scully has poor motor skills on land. it flops over a lot, but it has gotten quite used to somersaulting to get where it wants to go. bless its little heart, it is a very generous creature, and shares whatever food it tumbles into with its teammates.
- grumpy: i have finally learned where the shroomish came from. the little guy was actually a runaway from a nursery in cherrygrove, seeking adventure and to prove himself as more than the runt of his litter (crop?). grumpy’s breeder finally tracked him down outside azalea town, and after the obligatory “prove yourself“ battle, handed him over for real. at any rate, he lives up to his name, and hogs sunbeams.
- athena: i have never seen a hoothoot more pleased with itself than this girl. shocker of shockers, athena did not listen to my niece until after she beat falkner’s gym. she seems to think she’s smarter than your average borb, which she likely is, but she doesn’t have to be so high-and-mighty about it. she is more directionally inclined than her trainer, which does not help her ego.
- spot: a punchy baby, essentially. they are absolutely ready to tear whitney a new one, and are actively taking it upon themself to learn how type match-ups work in order to better destroy all who oppose them. it’s absolutely adorable seeing a baby panda carrying around a laminated type chart and getting excited when it lands a super-effective hit.
- bloberta: our newest addition. dumb as a box of packing peanuts (just like its papa HEYOOOOO). eats pop tarts despite being the size of my thumb. generally darling. can’t lift anything heavier than a piece of cereal, physically or telekinetically.
and
- arachne: seriously, this spider is clingy. she will not let go of my kid unless it’s to bathe, and even then she insists on being in the same room. the kid thinks this is because she was separated from her family too early, and the rejection by my niece didn’t help. we’re getting her some therapy.

Motivated by this Tweet by @delta86-art I decided to share a Character description for Lito, the Quilava character from the cast of Pokémon I include in my drawings, which I wrote some time ago. I have not worked out the details for all the others, but I have solid ideas for what they are like.
I also have it as a PDF but Tumblr does not allow me to upload those, so here is the Google doc.
Here is the raw text without pictures:
Lito Ayrura, the Little Flame (or Flame Choker)
Race: Quilava
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Height: 0,87m / 2’10’’
Hobbies: Trying to learn high-skill magic, Hanging out with friends, causing mischief
Likes: Adventure Stories, Treasures, Strong drink called ‘Golden Elerin Brew’
Dislikes: Busy work, Foreigners, Fire, Hypocrites, Being broke, Medicine
Personality and Character:
As a young and energetic Pokémon and apprentice of an adventure guild, Lito values loyalty, honour and the desire to help those in need. He deeply admires the ideals and traditions of the guilds, but more in spirit than in letter. He presents himself as a carefree and laid-back individual, but he feels like he is constantly living in the shadow of the legacy of his older brother, who was an admired and almost legendary adventurer in the land and a reminder of Lito's weaknesses.
Being very ambitious but impatient, he often loses sight of the small but important things. He often falls behind in combat training and class, which he believes are boring. He tries to hide his shortcomings under a mask of brashness and overconfidence and often boasts to his friends. In many situations, Lito wants to take the initiative, even if it jeopardises his personal goals or even a mission, causing him to be seen as an annoyance and a liability by others. As a result, he often gets relegated to busy work. Lito does not like to ask others for help and reacts antagonistically to those who offer it to him, preferring to solve his problems on his own.
Unusual for a fire Pokémon, he has a deep fear of flames, which causes him to be greatly insecure about himself. It greatly stifled his potential as an adventurer and earned him the nickname ‘Flame Choker’ from his rivals, which he strongly dislikes. Because his abilities are either useless or weak, he relies on magical items during combat. He is knowledgeable and skilled in their usage, but they are expensive merchandise, resulting in constant money problems for Lito. Thus he often finds himself forced to choose between money and guild ideals. He always wears a golden bracer and talisman, but would never sell them for anything in the world because they are invaluable heirlooms to him.
Backstory:
Lito was born into the small Ayrura clan which ruled an unimportant island in the eastern Azure Sea near the Land of Winds. At a young age, his home town was ravaged and scorched to cinders by an enraged Groudon earth god which was set loose by an unknown foreign power. Lito lost most of his family and friends to the fires. Only a few Pokémon escaped this carnage, two of them being Lito and his older brother Lian. Only the bracer and talisman were left to them as proof of their lineage, and they became valuable artefacts to them. The brutal attack on his home and his utter inability to save his loved ones planted a deep fear of fire in his psyche.
After their escape, they began a long journey westward, on which they had to avoid pursuing bandits, bounty hunters and mysterious agents hellbent on capturing the remains of the Ayrura clan. It is only thanks to his brother that Lito survived this trip, even if barely. They ended up in the peaceful land named ‘The Golden Leaf’ where the two orphans were found and taken care of by a local adventurers guild. They adapted quickly to life in this new home. The guild master, who has had dealings with the Ayruras before, took them in as novices. Lian quickly climbed the guild ranks and became Lito's close mentor and somewhat of a second father figure. It became Lito's dream to get strong so he and his brother could go on great adventures together and save Pokémon who could not help themselves, something Lian promised him, despite Lito's struggle to learn fire abilities and techniques.
Powers and Abilities:
As a Pokémon of the Fire Nature, he has the same resistances and weaknesses against other magic forms as any other fire Pokémon. For instance, he is resistant to Grass techniques, but he is weak against techniques of Ground, Rock and Water.
Naturally, he can use four combat abilities consistently. His specific skill set consists of the techniques commonly known as ‘Quick Attack’, a quick physical strike, ‘Smoke Screen’, a cloud of thick smoke that blinds enemies, and his strongest moves, Fire Wheel and Swift, two powerful attacks which cause large amounts of damage. His fear of fire prevents Lito from using ‘Fire Wheel’ unless he is under dire stress. If he uses it, he passes out from mental overload, leaving him vulnerable for some time. ‘Swift’ is a high-level ability and thus often fails, resulting in an explosion which can cause Lito to take heavy damage.
To compensate for his flaws, Lito mainly fights using his good knowledge of magical combat items, which he carries around in his bag or a bundle on his back. Combined with his ‘Smoke Screen’ ability, he uses those items mainly for crowd control. Thus he can quickly either stun, slow, confuse, or make his targets fall asleep. But for the really strong foes, these effects might only last a short amount of time, so Lito often relies on the assistance of others. These items can also only be used a couple of times before they lose their power, so Lito has to use them sparingly.

Hi I didn't read the post fully yet I'm sorry I just saw Von Karma and crobat and then my eyes flicked down to pokemon au please give Phoenix a cyndaquil please please I'm begging
Cyndaquil has the wettest saddest eyes and regularly got snacks from Edgeworths lunchbox. No one, not even Phoenix had this honor. Quilava stretched out so many of Phoenixs shirts that Dollie put Extra room in his sweater for him to climb under and snuggle. Typhlosion takes up an entire couch in the Wright anything agency and Apollo has lost many a jacket, file, Trucy under his chunky form. He'll just huff and ignore any and all attempts from Apollo to move him.
Apollos not convinced it knows any moves at all. And then he and Trucy get attacked by Mobsters and it stands up and flamethrowers them all to cinders. Trucy gives him chin scritches.
Quilava sleeps directly on Phoenixs chest. Phoenix throws him off and he goes right back on. He evolved because Phoenix refused to go to bed during the seven year gap. Wouldn't listen to his chirps and barks. So he evolved. Picked Phoenix up and carried him to bed. Phoenix was nearly squished. Typhlosion repeats this behavior on Edgeworth regularly as well.
#pokemon au#Phoenix wright#miles edgeworth#typhlosion never got the note that hes not a lap poke anymore and no one will convince him otherwise

It’s been slow around here lately, not much to write about, so I thought instead I’d tell the story of how I met Eliza.
I was 17 when I decided to leave the Johto region. I told my parents that I wanted to take on the Hoenn region’s gym challenge. I never got past Whitney in Johto’s gyms, but I needed a change and I wanted to be a bit further away from my family. Once I said “gym challenge”, they were willing to support the trip. We were all lying to ourselves.
I started in Littleroot Town, as is traditional. I moved very slowly through the region from there. It wasn’t that the battles in the area were challenging; my team only consisted of Cinder (then a Quilava), Scar (Scarmory), and Bubbles (Marill) at the time, but they were more than capable of handling what the area could throw at us. I was slow because I was enjoying exploring the new region and trying to find my place in it. I took on a few odd jobs and adventures on my way, looking for something I loved and hoping whatever I found was something my family could be proud of.
After a few months of stalling in Petalburg City, I finally decided it was time to tackle Petalburg Woods. This would be our biggest challenge of the region so far, our first experience with the wilderness of Hoenn. My bags were full to bursting with potions and antidotes; I barely had enough space for food. With trepidation, we set foot into the forest.
The first few days were uneventful. I was overly cautious and avoided all battles until we’d scoped out the area some and observed from afar the wild Pokémon that lived here. About a week in and most of the way through the forest, I woke at dawn to a cacophony of rustling, growling, and screeching. Scar and Cinder, who had been sleeping outside their balls, sprung into action while I scrambled up. Scar took to the sky to get the height advantage and a better view of the situation while Cinder lit his flames and growled. I kept Bubbles in her Pokéball; there were a lot of grass types in the forest, after all.
After a few seconds of panicking, I finally saw what was going on. Some twenty feet away, a couple of Zigzagoon were fighting fiercely. I didn’t see a trainer nearby and it wasn’t really my business what wild mons get up to, but I hate seeing any Pokémon get hurt. So, I signaled Cinder to break it up. He let out a terrifying roar and on cue, Scar dive-bombed the pair, scattering them into the trees.
I was about to turn away to pack up camp and get started for the day when I saw what they’d been fighting over: an egg. I picked it up. It didn’t look like a Zigzagoon egg, but what did I know? The only Pokémon eggs I’d ever seen were the Cindaquil ones from my dad’s few times breeding his Typhlosion. (Side note: yes, Cinder is the son of my dad’s Pokémon. We both have parental issues.) It was a sort of rusty red with white speckles, though it was hard to tell under all the dirt. I almost left it behind, figuring it must be one of the Zigzagoon’s and they’d come back for it, but I changed my mind and tucked it in my bag.
Over the next several weeks, I took care of that egg the best I could. I gave it to Cinder to warm at night and the Pokémon inside really seemed to like that. The egg was a lot more active when Cinder turned up the heat a bit. From this, I was convinced it was a fire type, so boy was I surprised when a Trapinch came out of that egg seven weeks later! How did a Trapinch egg come to be in Petalburg Woods, you ask? That’s a mystery to this day. Maybe it was stolen and re-stolen from Pokémon to Pokémon until it got there through a ridiculous relay race. Maybe there’s an odd Flygon living in the forest. Most likely, some trainer just chucked it when they found themselves in possession of an unwanted egg.
However she got to me, this Trapinch was my responsibility now and I was going to take care of her. The rest, as they say, is history. Eliza and I have been together ever since!

Okay so uh I follow @ask-n on my main and long story short an idea started rotting in my brain and I just kinda started writing. It's unedited, it's not canon, and it kinda spoils some of Dash's backstory but I wanted to post it anyway yk?
---
She should not be helping this strange purple-clad human from the sky.
Of course, she knew that. Humans were not to be trusted. They were creatures who would destroy the world if it meant they would glean something from it. Their machines made of metal and lightning poisoned the air and water. They tore down forests like her own home to build their flat-stone hellscapes. They fought, hurt, captured, and mistreated pokemon. Humans were evil creatures who thought of nothing but themselves, and she had seen this with her own eyes.
She would not allow her pup to become like them. He was important, he had an important destiny that would protect them all. He could not become like the other humans, greedy and cruel. She’d found him young enough that he knew nothing of the humans aside from what she had to tell him–and she had nothing good to say. Inviting another into the forest, giving them shelter or allowing them near her pups at all could shatter that, risk everything.
Still, something about leaving this one out in the storm when they already seemed injured… it didn’t sit right with her. She tried to convince herself that it was because of the Quilava, stubbornly refusing to leave his human Trainer in spite of the rain. He would only go with her to shelter if she carried his human and took her with, too.
“I’m not leaving Dash,” he’d said, and she nearly left him there to deal with the consequences of his own idiocy, but… something about this human felt different. Felt almost like N, like they were important in a similar way he was.
She was either getting soft or stupid.
🟣 🟣 🟣
Dash woke to the sound of rain and the sensation of being mostly dry. She blinked and went to push herself up, wondering when they had fallen asleep. It was when they realized that there were rocks digging into their hands that she realized that something was weird. “Wha… huh? Where…?”
Cinder jumped up and chirped something at her, before booping his nose into hers. “Pff, glad to see you’re here with me, buddy,” they said. She patted him on the head, and he leaned into the touch. “Wherever ‘here’ is…”
Wearily, Dash looked around. They were in some kind of cave, and it was raining purrloins and lillipups outside. Her hat was, thankfully, close to where they were laying. In less fortunate news, there was a sleeping zoroark and zorua just across the cave. Dash’s fingers curled tighter around their coat. Shit, this was a sticky situation.
Actually, that was putting it lightly. Very lightly. They had no idea where the hell they were or how they’d even gotten there, and their only two options were go out in the palpitoad-strangling rain to wander around and hope to Arceus she could find a pokemon center before she caught pneumonia or something, or stay here and be mauled when the mother(?) zoroark woke up and found an intruder in her den.
Short version? Dash was fucked.
“You sleep for a really long time. Are all humans like that?”
Dash turned around when she heard the voice. “Huh?”
They almost thought she was still dreaming. Standing in front of her was N, but… but it couldn’t be, because he was a kid. Dash knew N as the guy in his late twenties who, some-fucking-how, had managed to become a friend of hers and Hilda’s. Who was, even after everything that had happened, a really kind guy. N was not this kid standing before her with curious eyes and a tense, cautious posture.
“Momma says not to go near you. She says you’re dangerous. But Cinder says you’re really nice! It’s kinda confusing…”
Dash isn’t sure what to say. Thankfully, the boy keeps talking. “He says your name is Dash, and he says you like battling. But you don’t fight, you tell pokemon what to do. I think that’s weird. He says that the pokemon like you and that they like fighting for you.” He stops abruptly and just stares at Dash.
The silence feels like being buried alive, so Dash breaks it. “I, uh… well, you know my name, can I know yours?” she asks.
He nods. “Mhm! I’m N.”
What the hell.
Still, Dash gives him a smile. “It’s nice to meet you, N. Do you happen to know how I got here?”
“Yuh-huh! Momma carried you here, she said you fell from the sky and that you’d get sick if she just left you! True and I were really surprised, Momma really doesn’t like humans. She says they’re mean and scary and hurt pokemon!”
“...They can be. A lot of them are.” Dash pauses and bites their lip, considering. Then she takes a deep breath. “N? I know you don’t know me at all, but can you make me a promise?”
N tilts his head to the side. “What promise?”
“I need you to promise me that if anyone comes to try and make you leave the forest, you won’t do it. No matter how nice they are, I need you to promise you won’t go with them.”
N giggles. “Why would I wanna leave the forest? I’d have to leave Momma, and True, and all my friends! That doesn’t sound like fun!”
“Just… please?”
“...You look sad. Why are you sad? If it’ll make you not sad anymore, I promise I won’t let anyone make me leave the forest!”

Pokemon Crystal Run 4
After beating whitney I got my pokegear upgrade so I can listen to the radio now! I then head back to the flower shop and got the watering can from the older sister. I then went back to route 36 and watered the "tree" which, naturally, turned out to be a Sudowoodo.
With bob in front it wasn't too hard to wittle down sudowoodos health down to a sliver. I reached for a ball and.... realized I only had a lure ball i got from kurt! I had completely forgotten to restock to pokeballs!
I threw the lure ball anyway but it failed. So sadly I had to KO sudowoodo and miss out on catching it. Dangit.
With the path open I backtracked to route 31 and delivered the spearow with the message to the guy there. He gave me the TM for nightmare in return. Since I was already backtracking anyway, and I now had access to Cut, I decided to backtrack all the way back to newbark to try and see if there were any cuttable areas I missed.
Because of this I restocked on some berries, found the tm for roar, and got a fire stone from a person I gave my number to on route 36. After that I did one last backtrack to goldenrod and bought five great balls for use later on.
After a battle with a set of twins Cinder levels up and learns quick attack. One more, somewhat frustrating, trianer battle with a drowzee later I am in Ecruteak!
I'm not super confident in my ability to take down Morty, but I have little choice. I'm able to get through his gym trainers using Priscillas foresight attack, tho both Cinder and Phoebe get taken down.
After healing at the pokemon center I go back and face off against Morty!
Before that tho, lets do a refresher rolecall of the team!
My starter is a male Quilava named Cinder. He knows quick attack, ember, smokescreen, and leer. Hes holding a berry.
The first pokemon i caught is Priscilla. I caught her as a hoothoot but she has since evolved into Noctowl. She knows tackle, hypnosis, foresight, and peck and is also holding a berry.
My special baby girl (and a major bonus to playing crystal) is Phoebe the Phanpy! She knows tackle, growl, defense curl, and rollout. Just like Cinder and Priscilla I have her holding a berry. She was key in defeating Whitneys miltank in a rollout off.
Finally theres Bob the Quagsire. He started off as a wooper but quickly evolved. He knows surf, headbutt, amnesia, and dig and is holding a quick claw.
Their respective levels are 22, 23, 22, 23
With all that down lets face off against Morty!
First round is Gastly vs Priscilla!
Priscilla hits gastly with a foresight. Enemy gastly uses Curse. To keep Priscilla in the game, I swap out to Cinder.
Gastly hits Cinder with mean look, making me unable to switch him out. I hae Cinder use Ember which brings gastly down to a sliver of health. Gastly hits Ember with lick but Cinder takes it out with a (foresight enabled) quick attack.
Next Morty sends out Haunter. I have cinder hit it with ember and in return haunter attempts a hypnosis but it does nothing. Cinder uses ember again and in response haunter uses curse. Using curse causes haunter to knock itself out. Cinder grows to level 23.
Morty sends out his Gengar (which is level 25!) and I opt to swap to Priscilla to try and land a foresight. Unfortunately Gengar succeeds in using a hypnosis! I use my last awakening to wake Priscilla up and she just manages to evade dream eater. Gengar attempts to use hypnosis again, but fails allowing Priscilla to land foresight as planned. I leave Priscilla in to try and land a hypnosis. Unfortunately Gengar beats it to the punch. Swapping out now would just result in more of my team getting put to sleep so I have to leave Priscilla in and hope she wakes up before getting KO'd to land a blow on gengar.
Gengar does damage with dream eater two times before Priscilla heals with its berry... in its sleep? Not questioning it. Unfortunately its a waste as Gengar manages to land another dream eater bringing priscilla down to 4 health. I have a potion but its best I save it for an emergency. Which means the next dream eater takes Priscilla out.
However, her foresight making gengar capable of taking physical hits will hopefull make this easier.
I opt to send in Phoebe largely because I dont expect her attacks to do much, however she can hopefully absorb some of hypnosis or dream eaters pp while doing damage. Thankfully Gengars attempted hypnosis fails allowing phoebe to use rollout! Gengar responds with mean look, trapping phoebe in the fight. Phoebes next rollout also hits, but sadly so does Gengars hypnosis. Phoebe falls asleep and gengar uses dream eater taking out MOST of phoebes health. Dream eater also heals Gengar. Phoebe eats her berry (also in her sleep) to recover some help. But like before the next dream eater takes her out.
I decide to send in Bob next in the hope that his dig attack can avoid gengars hypnosis. Thankfully this works first round as gengars hypnosis fails and Bob is able to get off a dig. Its super effective and takes out most of gengars health! Unfortunately Bob gets hit with hypnosis immediately after. UGH. Dream eater hits and heals up gengar. Three times! This takes Bob out.
Its up to Cinder now. Gengar attempts another hypnosis but fails and Cinder gets off an ember. Next round it uses quick attack which does more damage. Gengars next attempt at hypnosis also fails. I use quick attack again to get ahead and thankfully Gengars hypnosis fails again. It repeated again next round. And one more quick attack finally takes Gengar out!
This leaves Morty final pokemon. Which is another haunter.
((anyone else think this guy should have used a misdreavus in this game? srsly it makes no sense))
With Cinder as my last team member I'm gonna wanna play it safe. Especially since without Priscilla to use foresight I can't rely on Quick attack anymore. I have Cinder use smokescreen to try and lower Haunters accuracy. I manage this twice before getting damaged by night shade. I have Cinder use Ember but Haunter uses mimic and copies ember. Cinder hits another ember bringing haunter down to yellow. Haunters next night shade fails. One more ember finally takes Haunter.
I win against Morty and Cinder gets to level 24!
Whew. I can use mons up to level 50 and I can now use surf! Which, tbh is the whole reason I hit this gym up first lol. I also get the shadowball tm which might come in handy in the future.
And with that I'm halfway through the Johto gym badges! WOOHOO.

Cyndaquil Line:
Mouse - Cyndaquil is the fire mouse Pokémon!
Exbo - in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Gold owns a Cyndaquil (that later evolves) named Exbo, after the explosive flames on his back
Ash - in the Pokémon anime, Ash owned a Cyndaquil (later a Quilava). This is also a classic fire type name, with the same meaning as cinders, which cyndaquil’s name is based on
Paca - a rodent native to South America with a slender body and spotted fur that Quilava resembles
Bakugo - Typhloshion is able to rub its fur together to create devastating explosions, similar to Bakugo’s quirk in the anime My Hero Academia
Jalapeño - perfect for a fiery hot Pokémon
Pathka - I recently read the book Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman and plan to name my next Cyndaquil after Pathka, as I imagine the weasel-like appearance of the line resembles the Quigutl creature from the series, though merged with a dragon

Yo so what are your favorite starters from every gen? (Excluding Kanto obviously cause we already know 👀)
My tastes have changed over time, but:
Gen II: I’ve always liked Cyndaquil the most, and Quilava is amazing. Not a fan of Typhlosion very much tho if I was honest. (Also the naming should totally be Charquil, Cyndaquil, Quilava to go from Coal to Cinders to Lava, but that’s just me)
Gen III: I liked Mudkip a lot as a kid, and hated Torchic. Now Torchic (and Combusken particularly) are among my top 25 easily. However, I think Sceptile might be my fav design of their final forms.
Gen IV: Turtwig was my fav in the past, but I’ve grown to dislike its line up until Torterra (who is amazing). I think Piplup wins, then Monerno for middle evos, then Torterra for final evos.
Gen V: OSHAWOTT and DEWOTT ARE AMONG MY FAVORITE POKEMON THAT I ALWAYS FORGET ABOUT BECAUSE I HATE THEIR FINAL EVO THAT MUCH! Samurott has a great design, but it does NOT look like what their final evo should be...so Serperior wins there I guess
Gen VI: The Froakie line is amazing the whole way through, only barely beating out Chesnaught who looks nearly as amazing (but gets fewer points for previous forms). I hate every part of the Fekkiken line. It starts with a head that’s too big, turns into a weird ~sexy~ humanoid fox and then just doubles down in the worst ways...eesh
Gen VII: The Rowlett line is like Froakie, perfect the whole way down. Which is great because Litten (like Fennekin) has a huge head and looks bad. The middle evo is literally perfect, but then completely ruins itself with going humanoid. Popplio and Brionne are great, but wierd ~sexy~ sealion mermaid final evo...not a good choice
Gen VIII: The first starters just have horrible proportions from now on, I guess, because I dislike Scorbunny for the same reasons I disliked the last two fire starters. Grookey is cute, but Sobble is best. Waiting for evos before I give final judgments
