Practicing faces with the Links.
One of the "rules" of Bad Moon is that darkness is not equivalent to evil. So what does is mean to kill your shadow? Here are the Links that did that.
Light is Nayru's domain, the goddess of truth and stasis. Darkness is Din's domain, the goddess of lies and destruction/creation (not the same as evil though!). Farore is the transitory goddess, of change and movement. Typically Nayru and Din oppose each other, not necessarily because they dislike each other or anything, but because they're philosophical opposites. To kill your shadow is to be beholden to the truth, but also to stunt your own ability to remake yourself. To embrace your shadow is to be able to build anew, but also makes things unclear. All Links are, by default, blessed by Farore, but they can be favored by other gods as well.
Left is the original Link from the Legend of Zelda and the Adventures of Link. At the end of AoL he defeats his own shadow to prove worthy of taking the Tri-Force of Courage. He'd do it over again to save the princess, but removing part of yourself is a harrowing act, and injured him greatly. Everything is just so bright now. On the upside, he's by far the most accomplished at wielding magic in Nayru's domain, though his abilities with Din's domain have suffered.
Middle is Tiny, of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. He had defeated his shadow in the water temple, allowing him to earn Nayru's Love, but upon being sent back to the past (perhaps Zelda foresaw problems if he stayed) he regained his shadow, going so far as to free Dark Link from the temple. Tiny is a prodigious dark magic user, blessed by Din and the dead of Termina, but he's lost Nayru's Love for freeing his shadow instead of destroying it.
Right is the Lieutenant of Hyrule Warriors. Cia tore his shadow from him during his lowest point and force him to fight it. While he managed to take down part of it, he could only defeat it with the help of his allies, meaning his shadow is only partly fractured. He's still capable of using a wide range of magic, though he's not the same sort of raw magic wielder that Original Link and Tiny are, instead using it to augment his own strength or via tools.
Not shown: the Hero of Legend (ALttP, OoA/OoS, LA) does have shadow Links (as seen in ALBW) but they're not "his." They're the shadows he fought and defeated in the Palace of the Four Swords, possibly created from Four Swords Link. Eventually he figures out how to free them and they're basically his BFFs. Technically he has shadows in OoA, but ehhhh they don't really fight, they're just weird obstacles, so I'm going to say they're not actually his shadow.

Hazbin Hotel Thoughts
I'm on my second watch and have some thoughts. Would love to chat about these.
Spoilers, Obviously
I think Alastor is going to end up being an antagonist in the series at some point. As part of this, I think it's going to absolutely shatter Charlie when this is revealed, and that while it won't stop her optimistic belief in the power of change, it will significantly dampen the naivete we see in her right now.
I am really looking forward to the day that Charlie decides she has truly had enough of the way Valentino treats Angel Dust and goes toe to toe with him
I need more Carmilla Carmine and her lil family
Why is Carmilla so badass and her daughters both look like total NERDS (not that there is anything wrong with being nerds). They showed up to that Overlord meeting looking like her damn accountants. I think one of them IS her accountant.
My current theory is that Carmilla was a crime boss of some type in her real life - drug lord, war lord, something - and that she and her daughters were all killed at the same time. Maybe by a rival, maybe by the ATF/CIA, who knows.
Season 1 has established some clear character parallels between Carmilla Carmine and Vaggie. I would like to see this develop more.
Did Lucifer actually seduce Eve (aside from the apple) or was he just taunting Adam during the fight?
My brother pointed this one out: If Adam was the first soul in Heaven, that is really bad news for poor Abel.
I see a lot of people talking about Niffty like she's a child, but she appears to have canonically been in her 20s (born in the 30s, died in the 50s) when she died. My brother and I theorize that she's a speed-addicted housewife. Rationale: her default "weapon" is a giant sewing needle; she has something of a housewife aesthetic; the obsession with cleaning.
Maybe a weird thing to notice but Charlie appears to have a... snout? Like, in profile shots, there's no dip back into the face beneath her nose... which would imply that she has more of a snout shape than a human face shape. Neither Lucifer nor Lilith appear to have this, so I am curious...
Charlie writes a script in which a "good" Sir Pentious announces he is "off to NOT have premarital sex" ... while she is sharing a bed with the girlfriend she is clearly not married to. No one likes a hypocrit, Charlie. This entertains me wildly.
Speaking of that, was Lute being homophobic or racist when she called Vaggie and Charlie vile and disgusting?
My theory of the final fight is that Lucifer was nearby, watching the whole time, but that he did not intervene until Charlie was in real danger for 2 reasons. 1 is that he was trying to let her do this for herself and 2, I think part of the pardon deal he negotiated with Heaven requires him to stay out of the Exterminations. If we think clearly, there's no real incentive for Heaven to just grant a universal pardon to ALL the Hellborn (and the pardon was for ALL Hellborn, not just Charlie). But if Lucifer traded his participation for their protection - which is clearly in character for him, as he definitely wants Charlie safe - then that is a hell of an incentive. It both makes the Exterminations that much safer for the Exorcists, but it will demoralize the demons of the Pride Ring (because Lucifer won't defend them) and weaken Lucifer's influence (because he's a lazy king who won't protect them). If Lucifer comes in too fast and hot, then he could be seen as in violation and bring down exponentially worse upon the inhabitants of Hell. But with Adam attacking and threatening Charlie DIRECTLY (attacking her Hotel and the Sinners there wouldn't count), it could be argued that Adam was the first to violate this hypothetical agreement. (I mean, it could also be argued that Charlie violated it as well. I said it could be argued, not that he would necessarily win.) He even says it, when he comes after Adam after the hotel is broken "You come after me and MY DAUGHTER"
I don't like St. Peter. I have no super good reasons for this... I just hate his stupid little face and his stupid little... everything. Someone I know said he gives "televangelist vibes," so maybe that is it.
BUT WHERE IS EVE?!

OK, fuck it, I have thoughts.
So I like Axiom’s End. Its theme may hit as subtly as a sledgehammer but it’s saved by the characters and the way it’s delivered. The whole point is about not truly being able to comprehend the mysterious Other, about communication and knowledge not being a panacea to bigotry and supremacism, about how studying the Other can often lead to the reinforcement of said bigotry as you confirm your prejudices and refuse to abandon your point of view where you’re the default, the morally superior and the Other at best a flawed imitation, at worst a contemptible aberration. And you arrive at this and the usual “wait, this is actually about our world, isn’t it” via the protagonists and their own personal failure to truly comprehend one another, even though at the same time they’re aware of their respective cultures’ atrocities. Again, unsubtle but it works.
And then Truth of the Divine comes and it just doesn’t. The theme is utterly divorced from the characters’ inner journeys. It’s literally a “wise accomplished guy sees further than the protagonist and informs her of the theme which they then spend the rest of the book trying to effect”. The idea that “if you deny rights to aliens, you create a legal framework which then allows humanity to keep indulging its centuries-long human rights abuses” isn’t even less on the nose than what the previous book presented but because it comes to the story as a monologue and the response is “oh I never thought about it that way, guess that’s what we’re doing now” it reads like a Medium article preaching to the choir.
And I absolutely am going to blame this on Kaveh or rather the way he’s designed. For the theme to be a result of a learning process, you really need someone like Timothy Snyder not realizing until his 50s that the U.S. healthcare system is a bit shit, because he’d never been affected by its shittiness before. You need a person of privilege. You obviously can’t do “I discovered racism exists” via an Iranian refugee who got his big break by exposing CIA torture sites in the Middle East.
But OK, fine, I guess that the world doesn’t need another white savior “I learned something today” narrative (let’s ignore it could have been Miranda having a leopards ate my face moment). But to really drive the final nail in the coffin, Kaveh isn’t even particularly complex as a character. He’s endlessly understanding and empathetic and soooo self-aware, absolutely would never use Cora to his advantage, no siree, he genuinely loves her and wants to take care of her and never abuses his worldliness and is a great fuck and exactly what she needs at this stage in her life and he never has doubts about anything and his demons are long behind him and only serve as a means for Cora to learn there is a light at the end of the tunnel and his connection to Nils doesn’t amount to much in terms of character flaws and he believes the idea of daddy issues is stupid and he opens doors to a better future for Cora and stands up for her and is loaded but his wealth doesn’t affect his worldview whatsoever and his dick is uuuuge and throbbing and oh my fucking god I get it he’s perfect I could not give less of a shit about him why is this Gary Stu taking up so much space.
And this, kids, is how momma found herself yearning for the tertiary CIA agent who most likely has a past of torturing people. Simply because he seems to have something, anything else going on behind what’s readily apparent.
#axiom's end#truth of the divine#lindsay ellis#kaveh threatened to be interesting in his murderguy phase#then he opened his mouth and it went downhill from there#found this in the drafts one year later and yup still feeling this way so here it is#noumena

Random Vampire + other supernatural stuff AU where Vaati is mistaken by the general populace as a Vampire but he's actually a Seelie type fairy who left the courts (the unseelie don't like him either) because he was fascinated with the dark magics humans could wield and had no interest in being nice to them, and was much more selfish than his brethren. He learned their magics and other human sins and has left his fairy life a long time ago to live amongst humans for his own fun and gain. (more au ramblings under cut)
He's spent at least 200 years in the human world and is a bit notorious amongst other long living beings as being a huge flirt and having many girlfriends at once. In truth he prefers the chase than actually having the prize so he's seen as very fickle and has broken many hearts who actually fell for him.
At some point one particularly plucky girl ended up having children with him. Even now he carries a locket of paintings of his kids when they were young even though they are all in their twilight years now (though having fairy blood in them they are longer lived than humans). He will gush about them if given the opportunity. He may not be as involved in their families as he used to be but their bloodlines are blessed by him.
His default human form actually looks about 12 (to his annoyance) but he is a skilled shapeshifter who likes to keep his appearance anywhere in the range of 18-25 because it's easier to flirt with people that way.
He slipped into a ball held by who he assumed was the powerful and infamous Cia but turns out she had been long killed by Colonel, who was turned against his will and took his revenge. The ball was to celebrate a curious new addition to the household. A massive, handsome man named Ganondorf with curious stitching scars and the scent of curious magics about him (tldr: my witch Ravio did a Frankenstein) and despite the many other beauties at the ball became absolutely enraptured by the man. And after the ball he decided he MUST know more about him. Thus the courting began. The others at the mansion are suspicious but his intentions are very innocent.
(AU tldr:) (Hyrule Warriors Link as the Vampire Lord of the house, Twilight is a werewolf and was once a monster hunter, a totk Link is HW's beautiful vampire bride, Ravio is a witch who traded protection from persecution (long story) to being the maid/butler of the house and allowed to explore his craft, and another totk Link is a angel/demon hybrid who was also a vampire hunter and knew Ravio when they were children. They are one big happy family and definitely nothing bad ever happens to them and they will all definitely live for a long time.)

Liar liar pants on fire
My current fandom LOOOOOVES the fake dating/married trope and like, hard same, but if we zoom out, honestly it’s SO RIDICULOUS.
Not the faking part, but the inevitable part where the fakers go “oh we have to practice holding hands/hugging/kissing etc because we have to be SO BELIEVABLE or we’ll be FOUND OUT.”
Which, let’s face it, would never ever happen.
If you told people you were dating or married, and were a bit awkward with each other in front of them, there is no universe in which a sane person’s first reaction would be to point and shriek “J’ACCUSE! FAKERS! YOU’RE NOT REALLY TOGETHER!”
If anyone even NOTICED you were awkward, which isn’t super likely in the first place, if they thought about it all, they’d assume one of the following:
Oh, they’re a bit awkward. Sometimes people are awkward.
They’re not comfortable among new people.
They had fight in the car on the way over.
They’re on the verge of splitting and are putting up a front.
“They’re faking being together” would not make the old Family Feud top ten of “why these people seem a bit awkward with each other.” Like, in a social situation, nobody’s conducting CIA-level surveillance of everyone’s body language and nonverbal cues to make sure everyone is in relationships that they claim to be in. The default for almost everyone is “assume people are telling you the truth.”
But the trope? Pure gold.

Tierlist of the Masterquest costumes from Hyrule Warriors Legends.
Costumes and explanations below the cut
I don't quite know why they decided to make Warriors' tunic and hat purple. But I think it looks really good on him, especially with the blue scarf. They blend very well together.
This outfit for Impa looks a lot like her Great Sea costume, but a bit darker and with a black cloak. Despite those seemingly minor differences, she looks amazing in red and black. And the cyan feathers are a nice touch.
Sheik's Master Quest outfit seems to lean hard into the ninja aspect, with the black and dark blue. I think it looks awesome. My only minor gripe is that the hair color could have been changed, but it's not too noticeable, so it doesn't matter too much.
I think I might actually like Lana's Master Quest costume more than her default one. I love how it was made to resemble Cia, and the colors work very well on her, especially with her hair color changing. I especially like her cloak and hair clip.
Valor's costume takes clear inspiration from Princess Hilda from Link Between Worlds, so you could use that for roleplaying if you want. I don't have that much to say about this. I like the dress, I love the dark hair, it's an overall solid costume.
Yet another one of Ganondorf's costumes that slap harder than he does. The colors for this one are incredible and mesh perfectly together, especially the teal centerpiece of his reddish armor. His hair is also marvelous.
Much like Valor's Hilda cosplay, Darunia's costume based on Darmani's ghost looks amazing. It's a much larger change than his Great Sea costume, but I think it works better. The arm tattoos and slash mark across the stomach are the cherry on top.
Similarly to Darunia, Ruto's costume is based on her Termina lookalike, Lulu. Also like his, this design absolutely slaps. The little designs on her fin-skirt are my favorite part, and kind of remind me of false eyes seen on fish. The purple is also pretty.
Agitha still appears to be in a goth phase. But for some reason, I think it works a bit better than her Great Sea costume. Maybe because her face paints don't clash with her dark clothes as much. Whatever the case, she looks good.
As if Midna wasn't already peak character design, they somehow made her look even cooler! The dark stone of the Fused Shadows and red markings already work perfectly with her design, but the shadow beast theme of her costume is executed perfectly. I do think that it would have been cool if her hair color was also changed, but I understand why they didn't.
When I saw Zant in this outfit after obtaining it, I actually said "Oh Hell yes!" out loud. Much like Midna, his shadow beast themed outfit not only fits him, but it looks incredible. The darker colors of his armor and robes with the red streaks are exactly what he needed, and even though I didn't notice the purple sash at first, it looks great.
Fi's boss outfit is beautiful. It adds a bit of a more metallic hint to her body, which works very well given her nature. But theming aside, she just looks so cool.
Ghirahim also seems to be going through a goth phase with this one, although I think it might be in reference to his true spirit/sword form. The dark clothing contrasts with his pale hair and skin, but it works incredibly well for him. It fits with the idea of him having a pretty face which hides ugly intentions (if you get that reference, you get a cookie).
I can definitely see what they were going for with Cia's costume and how it takes inspiration from Warriors. Initially, I didn't really care for this one, but it kind of grew on me. The white tattoos and blue cloak definitely make it work.
Even though I don't really know what Volga's costume is based on, I still think that he looks really cool. The copper, orange and gold look really good and add to the fire dragon look. I don't think it's any more effective than the normal design, but I still like it.
Even though Wizzro only looks slightly different from normal, I think it works. The more vibrant colors somehow fit the "dark magic curse creature" vibe really well, arguably more so than his darker default outfit.
Bonus:
The Guardian of Time outfits for Lana and Cia look very beautiful. The white clothes look good on Cia and Lana looks cute with that hat. It kind of looks like they're wearing wedding dresses. I did deduct points for the costume changing Cia's skin tone, because I think she'd look pretty. But I'm not touching the implications of that otherwise.

It is funny that everyone can point to the aesthetification of punk or emo and read it as a hollow, capitalized, defanged version of a counter culture alternative grouping of communities that commodifies and takes the power from an actual threat to capital (and, in the truest forms of expression, anti colonial, anti racist, anti bigot etc)-- the commodification of a lifestyle is to inherently eat it and then present an Angler Fish predator of illusionary revolution that nonetheless reproduces the system with which it has been hive minded into-- and yet. And yet, except in very specifically fringe groupings of historians and other, well, hippies, I don't see the same awareness or cohesive 'oh duh' moment to the caricatureization of hippies and freaks.
Ofc, to give nuance, many of the true counter cultural folks just moved on with the times and ended up just in a less defined 'aesthetic' as is the grouping I usually just umbrella default to 'folk' (which yes, has been commodified, but not in the same sense that 'alternative' has been commodified).
But one of the greatest psy-ops of the 20th century Imo was the way in which 'hippies' (by which I really mean the Freaks, a term that was arguably used more but is less commercially friendly to be calling an entire movement when you caricature and debarb it) was so fully caricatured, and a movement was completely erased.
To give the obvious sidebar and second caveat-- yes, I'm aware of the 'problematic' and less than stellar political optics of the 'hippie' movement. But in the same vein that talking about Marxism on this site and rebutting with 'well what about tankies!' is just a praxied conversational stop gap of bad faith interpretations and willful nuance-killing ignorance, this post isn't about interrogating those that even at the time were hopping on the coattails of an incredibly powerful social movement for less political motivations.
And at some point, I would like to pour through soke of the literature I have on the topic and write a fully researched academic deconstruction of the movement, because I really do think the Freaks of the 60s mirror a lot of the political activism occurring now, and lest we learn from the past, I'm afraid of this, too, being caricatured and defanged before it has a chance to win.
('Win.' Also a complex term that would take a paper to define.)
But the salient thesis here being that, at its core, the Freaks and Hippies of the 60s were, by 1969, creating a multicultural, social, and political revolution that was cross-racial, cross-gendered, cross-cultured, cross-sexual etc, intent on tearing down the structures of power in place that operated on capital and subjugation to hold 'peace' as a contractual perk for maintaining injustice. And that, this intercrossing of revolutionary communities and countercultural groupings (much like the end of the 1860s and 1870s post war) was registering as a threat to the establishment, and thus needed to be divided. The Hippie movement didn't commit suicide and poisoned by it's own political messaging; it was, like the CIA and other government institutions have done before, methodically and rititualistically poisoned, and when it was murdered, the gun was planted on the corpse. The caricaturization of the Freaks is money in the pockets of those that killed peace.

Yeah, the more conspiracy theory part of my brain (dw, it's mostly stuff like "well I have no real proof that the CIA is doing this now but their unsealed records say they were definitely up to it in the 70s so I'm pretty sure they're still doing it") reckons that the aggressive protelysing is the Christian Hegemony's way of ensuring that cultural and religious Christians remain within the hegemony. Like, you're not going to ask about other religions from their own sources if you have been raised to assume that the default response is to get you in the baptismal pond (or equivalent) ASAP.
Like, it may not be a conscious thing for at least some denominations but yanno. A surprising/disturbing amount of the history of European Christianity (and the Churches derived from it) is about social control and engineering.
The world is so very full of things where no one sat down and planned it but it benefits the people in charge because the people in charge are very good at seeing stuff up so that it produces situations that benefit them and also very good at stopping stuff that doesn't benefit them from continuing
I am sure there must be some sort if sociological term for this phenomenon but I do not know what it is

hi there! how are you? was just going through your last answer and could you elaborate more on leon being an extrovert? i definitely think he has his social moments but i always felt he was quite the introvert, so i would love to hear more of your ideas
I think the fandom does itself a disservice by basing this off of post-crisis Leon. People look at only RE4make and label him an introvert, because he's paranoid and keeps to himself in that game.
But not only is that a very specific moment of time in his life and his character arc, that's not what introverted means. You can be paranoid and keep to yourself and still be an extrovert -- especially if it's trauma or training that's made you paranoid (or, in Leon's case, both).
You can also be awkward as fuck and still be an extrovert. An extrovert is not someone who's, by default, confident and charismatic and charming and boisterous (though I would argue that OG Leon is most of those things). An extrovert is someone who feels energized by being around other people. That's it.
And that goes back to Leon being "The Protector" archetype. A Protector personality type is one that's extroverted by definition. A Protector needs someone to protect -- they need to be needed -- and that's not something that they can just give to themselves on their own time. They need the external validation of someone who needs them.
Leon's job and circumstances and lifestyle force him into a state of paranoia and isolation, but that's not who he is by nature. It's who the government forced him to become. And it makes him fucking miserable.
Because, at his core, Leon is someone who needs external validation and to have a strong support system around him. That's why he spends all of RE2 chasing after Ada. In OG, he needs to act as The Protector for Ada in order to make himself feel like he's actually accomplishing something, and in Remake, he looks to her constantly for validation as senior law enforcement (even though she's not actually).
As weird as it might be to think of a Redfield as an introvert, Claire is more introverted than Leon is -- because Claire is okay with being and working alone. We see her do it constantly.
But not Leon. Leon is always looking for someone to latch onto or partner up with or protect or mentor or whatever. His mood improves whenever he's around other people -- whereas Claire, at times, gets annoyed at having to deal with people.
The CIA tried to beat Leon into being okay with his isolation, but it becomes clear by the time he reaches the castle in RE4make that it didn't work; he still feels better when he's with other people or talking to other people, even if those "other people" are former Umbrella researchers.

Give me a hot take any hot take, can be lukewarm or on literal fire I trust your judgment
Been overthinking this for days so here we go, under the cut bc this got a lil rambly:
the IMF as an institution is a tool of global economic terrorism mostly utilized by the United States to destabilize countries that a) hold nationalized resources the us gov't wants access to, b) are engaging in a form of economic growth that threatens the Washington Model (see: what was done to Korea post WWII, for example), or c) that house or are sympathetic to forms of ""communism"" or ""religious extremism"" in whatever form most currently convenient.
everybody talks (and rightly so) about how the US gov't has, via the CIA, orchestrated assassinations, overthrown governments, and caused general public chaos both at home and abroad, but like. the IMF bills itself as an independent organization aimed at helping struggling nations, except that the largest lender/donor country is the United States, and they have almost explicitly operated as a safeguard of US economic interests abroad.
they have essentially one set of protocols, which they throw like a net over everyone who comes to them for help: cut inflation by raising interest rates and cutting government funding for social safety nets. which is basically just the standing order for US monetary policy but on steroids. they put the client country on this plan whether inflation is the actual problem or not--and frequently, it's not--and then watch as the nation either starves its citizenry out trying to keep up with these demands, or defaults.
there's a book I read for undergrad called globalization and its discontents: revisited by joseph stiglitz which covers a bunch of things, but one of them is the role the IMF has played in curbing and crushing a lot of developing economic models over the decades in pursuit/defense of US economic interests, which I highly recommend if you'd like another reason to be incandescent with rage lmfao.

People really need to get the fuck over this weird, puritanical pearl-clutching they're doing and being scandalized by OG Leon being a slut canonically. OG Leon tries to fuck Hunnigan at one point, for god's sake.
Because, like. If you try to handwave away or whitewash the way that Leon throws himself at people, you're erasing and overlooking a really big part of his character.
Leon is lonely and he fucking hates himself.
The way that this manifests/the way that he expresses this is different between Remake and OG, but that fact about him never goes away. Remake Leon puts up walls and self-isolates as though he's trying to protect everyone around him from the misfortune of having to know him, but OG Leon does the opposite. OG Leon is constantly giving more and more of himself away in the hopes that, eventually, there'll be nothing left.
So, there's a few different things going on there when he asks out Shen May and then Claire in ID.
With Shen May -- yes, he is actually asking her out. That is a legitimate offer for a date that he will go into with the intention of putting the moves on her and having it end in sex.
He does this not just because she's a hot girl -- though, of course he does think she's a hot girl -- he does it because he feels enough of a connection to her that, if she were to go out with him once, he could use that as a way to trick himself into thinking he's still worth other people's time -- even if for just a few hours. Again: he's really fucking lonely. No one person ever stays in his life long enough to form a meaningful relationship with him (platonic or otherwise), but if he can take a girl out to dinner -- hey, that's something, right?
And if he were to actually fuck her, he'd be able to lose himself in her wants and desires for long enough that he can forget how much he fucking hates himself. If he were to feel her hands on his body, he would actually feel wanted for a change. And if he were to make her come, he would feel needed -- and, if he were to make her come more than once, that would be even better. (Remember: Leon is "The Protector." He needs to be needed. He's probably the master of foreplay and will tease and touch and put his mouth on a partner for well over an hour before he actually fucks them.)
And, ever since being kidnapped by the CIA, the only way that Leon has ever been needed or wanted or useful in any way has been through physical means and the use of his body. That's why he defaults to sex as a coping mechanism before he gives up and just starts drinking. He might not have any value as a person, but as a physical body and an object -- well, that's a different story.
Leon objectifies himself, is what I'm saying.
With Claire, though, it's a little bit different.
Yes, it's ship bait -- but it's very mild ship bait, because the context for this one is way different.
Leon isn't being sincere with Claire when he says what he says. He knows that Claire didn't call him or meet up with him because she wants to go out with him or is looking for a booty call. He's not stupid (mostly).
Leon is being sarcastic and self-deprecating when he tells Claire that he was hoping she was going to want to get dinner with him. It's a sad joke to him, because, in his mind, the thought that Claire would be interested in him at all is actually ridiculous.
Because Claire knows him in ways that Shen May didn't. He can't charm his way into Claire's panties by pretending that he's something more than -- or that he's someone -- that he's not.
Claire doesn't need him -- Claire has never needed him, and Leon has absolutely no reason to believe she wants him, either.
What good is he to her, really, when she already knows the truth? She knows that Leon's only real use is as a weapon -- that he's not good for literally anything outside of an active bioterrorism situation. She knows that he fucks up everything he ever tries to do in his personal life. So, why would she want him? Why would she ever want him?
She doesn't. That's why she's about to disappear from his life again for maybe another six years. Maybe more. Because he's not worth being around.
At least, that's what his brain tells him.
It's a really self-defeating mindset that turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Him talking about getting dinner with Claire is a joke, and the punchline is his own opinion of himself.
