Your wish is my command! For those unaware, the cats are the kitty versions of Kris, Karl and Lottie that Bri so lovingly wrote for her amazing Warrior Cats fic (which you should read here) What the Cat Dragged In Warnings: None, beyond cursing and some lewd humor. Word count: 2273

“Honey, sit still please.” “I have enough layers on! Mommmm! Let me go!”

Kris tried not to react as Lottie flopped back dramatically onto the kitchen tile, limbs spread starfish-like to emphasize the absolute agony her mother was forcing her to endure by not letting her run outside naked in the dead of winter. Surely child services would arrive at any moment to behold the horror of a child being dressed for the cold and whisk her away to a family that cared. With a sigh, Kris crossed her arms and stood over Lottie, now fully feigning death by sticking her tongue out and pinching her eyes shut. Her fluffy pink earmuffs looked like a second set of buns perched on the sides of her head. “You just need shoes. That’s it - only shoes,” Kris said calmly, gesturing to the snow boots sitting by the door. “Do you think you can survive that? You wouldn’t want wet socks.” “I don’t want to wear those boots. They’re too hot!” “Mmm. And what other boots could I get for you- oh! That’s right! You melted the soles off your second pair when you and Papa insisted on playing lightsabers by the bonfire in autumn. Speaking of which, where is your father? We need to get going - the school bake sale starts in half an hour.” 

Lottie sat up, her grumpy expression diminished slightly at the prospect of changing the subject away from her attire. “He’s outside. Said he was going to the shed because he thought he saw an animal go in last night.” “When did he tell you this?” “Right after breakfast… a while ago, I guess. Maybe he got lost? Should we make a search party? Can I fly a helicopter!?” Kris’s brows furrowed. The shed sat at the very edge of their property, right where the woods began - she could see it from the kitchen window, for heaven’s sake. He had been gone a long time for someone investigating such a relatively small structure, though. Either Karl had met his doom at the paws of a rabid skunk, no doubt engaging in combat to assert dominance over who smelled the worst, or it was the cats.

Two of them, usually - a male and a female. They didn’t typically stay around long, only ever dropping by to make camp for a few days in whatever space they could find amidst Karl’s comically large collection of “vintage” lawn mowers and tools he insisted would be fixed up and resold one day. They’d started showing up a few years prior, not long after Kris and Karl had moved in. At first the cats kept a healthy distance, little more than quick blurs darting out from under the porch. Kris treated them more or less like cows on the highway, something to point out and briefly observe before going back to the monotony of the day. And then, Karl started making even more frequent convenience store stops. He always showed up with a bag of Kris’s favorite sour candies in an attempt to distract her from the copious amount of tuna cans he was stockpiling. He even tried to hide where he was putting them, as if the smell of fish didn’t make it incredibly obvious. Before she knew it, the fluffy tomcat had fallen on top of her head from the support beams the next time she’d entered the garage to speak to her husband, the smaller brown she-cat observing boredly from on high as her mate was nearly punted across the room. “It’s gotta be those furballs again,” she said to no one in particular. She ran a quick hand through her frizzy curls, standing on end seemingly out of frustration with her offspring. “Lottie, please put on your boots and then follow me outside. If I see you come out barefoot, I’m picking the movie tonight.” “Uuuuuughhh… Fiiineee….” The screen door slammed with a bang as Kris marched with purpose across the backyard, beelining for the rickety old shed. What remained of yesterday’s snow mix with mud from the yard squelched unpleasantly underfoot. She wasn’t angry about the cats so much as she was about being late - it gave her tremendous anxiety. Not to mention fucking Debbie would undoubtedly have set up shop right by the exit, where Kris wanted to be; the thought of the woman’s smug face sneering at her while she hawked her flavorless macarons was enough to drive her to madness. No, she would not lose her prime bake sale real estate this year. Not again. She heard it before she saw it, the shed’s perpetually shattered side window allowing the sound to be audible when she was within ten paces. Karl’s voice - so he hadn’t fallen victim to skunk murder. Shame.

Kris didn’t bother knocking - she pushed the creaky wooden door open and entered the damp, warm space with an expression that she hoped conveyed the sort of disappointed maternal look that bent the normally bombastic man to her will. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, a figure sitting on a stack of overturned milk crates in the corner began to take form - as did a pair of glowing, irritated eyes.

And there he was, Mr. Tough guy himself, cradling the scraggly grey tomcat like a baby and cooing at it in an uncharacteristically high pitched tone. Kris sighed. It might have been cute if they didn’t have somewhere to be - and if Karl wasn’t deliberately pretending she wasn’t there. The cat was looking at her with an expression that she could only describe as insulted, as if he could not believe her audacity in interrupting his belly rub session. “Having fun?” Kris’s lips twitched. “We were.” Karl was very fond of the male, to put it lightly - though he’d die before he said as much. Kris wasn’t a cat person, but she had exchanged enough glances with the small, brown female to recognize the same exhausted eyes that stared back at her every morning in the bathroom mirror. A kindred spirit, it would seem. The poor thing had lost her tail, and all that remained was a little nub that fluffed up angrily when she was agitated. Which seemed to be often around her ever-meowing mate.

Speaking of which- A quick glance around the space didn’t immediately reveal the little she-cat, to Kris’s surprise chagrin. Unless she’d wedged herself in a corner or under a tarp, she was nowhere to be seen. “Where’s his girlfriend?” Kris asked, trying to sound uninterested. Karl shrugged, the momentary pause in his petting earning him a swift paw to the jaw. He chuckled and resumed his all important task, shifting a bit anxiously in place. “Dunno. Haven’t seen her - she’s probably out getting drunk with her little cat friends and talking shit about this poor baby.” The tomcat purred loudly, swishing his feather duster tail across Karl’s leg. Kris rolled her eyes. She was busy thinking up a witty retort when Lottie’s wheezy self jostled around her from behind, having just sprinted over from the house upon the realization that her parents were spending time together without her, yet another unacceptable grievance. Almost as bad as being forced to wear shoes. “What’re you two doing? What’s that? Is that the cat we saw last summer?” “You’ve got major FOMO, y’know that?” Kris flicked one of her buns affectionately. “Papa was just saying goodbye to his buddy, wasn’t he?” Karl opened his mouth to protest - Kris swore for a brief, insane moment that the cat mirrored his expression - when Lottie tugged on her mother’s jacket sleeve. “Hey, where’s the other one?” God, she’d hoped Lottie wouldn’t ask. For all anyone knew, she was simply hiding or out hunting - but the fact that it was winter, and knowing how many coyotes and foxes they’d already seen this season… she didn’t want to think about it. Kris swallowed her mounting sadness. They’re strays, she told herself. It was bound to happen sooner rather than later. Besides, she wasn’t even a cat person - what was she getting so worked up about?As if on command, an irritated meow came from the small storage loft above. The little brown she-cat darted her green eyes curiously between Kris and Lottie before glaring at the tom. Kris snapped her gaze up and failed to contain the relief in her voice as she exclaimed, “Hey, you!” Karl, infuriatingly, noticed. He flashed her one of his Cheshire cat grins, and Kris was ready to launch the nearest rusty tool at his head when the she-cat voiced her indignation once more.

The male meowed in response and flopped awkwardly out of Karl’s lap before bounding on top of the nearby crates and barely making the leap up into the loft. His back paw slipped awkwardly, but he managed it all the same before shaking his fur like a wet dog and trying to look menacing and huge again. He briefly butted heads with his mate before they both turned away from the three humans below, as if deep in hurried conversation. Kris didn’t want to waste any more time on this than they already had - mostly she didn’t need Karl needling her about actually liking a cat. She gestured toward her waiting car in the driveway, loaded to the hilt with brownies that actually tasted good, thank you very much, Debbie. “There, you’ve had your visit. Now can we get going?” “Yeah, yeah.” Karl rose with great effort, the groan he emitted as he simply stood up more akin to someone being stabbed to death rather than simply stretching their back. “Hey, wait!” Lottie suddenly pointed upward toward the ats and bounced eagerly on her toes, craning her short neck to try to see something. The female hopped down first, gracefully, and made her way to Kris’s legs. She wound her sleek little form around them a few times, and Kris couldn’t resist bending and giving her a quick ear scritch before Lottie nearly shrieked with delight. With a heavy thump, the tomcat landed on the crates again, this time carrying a furious fuzzball in his jaws. The little grey kitten hissed furiously, its short limbs flailing with irritation at having been removed from their warm nest. The proud father strutted over to Karl to present the little spitting terror while the mother appeared unbothered, ignoring her offspring’s protests and blinking slowly up at Kris to gauge her reaction. She wasn’t sure if cats understood thumbs up, but that was all she could think to give the expectant creature. “Well, look at that!” Karl clapped his hands together delightedly. “You old bastard, you got some swimmers that still work?” “Aww, I said the same thing to you after we got married,” Kris kissed her husband’s cheek, reveling in his sour expression. 

“IT’S A KITTEN!!!!!” Karl barely caught Lottie before she lunged forward, pure mania in her eyes. “Lottie, shhh,” Kris suppressed the urge to laugh lest it startle the cats. “Yes, it’s a kitten. A very cute one. Try to stay calm, we don’t want to scare them away.” Her daughter was practically vibrating with excitement. The tomcat plopped the little grey kitten, his clone in almost every way, on the dirt floor where it proceeded to fluff up to twice its size and stand stock still. Its eyes were like saucers as it observed Lottie, unsure of whether to run or launch itself at her face. Ever the extrovert, Lottie dropped to her hands and knees and introduced herself, loudly, to the kitten. She crouched until her chin was practically on the ground and made herself as small and unthreatening as possible. The kitten slowly deflated, shuffling forward and flashing tiny teeth nervously before batting Lottie’s nose to garner a response. Lottie only laughed and extended a chubby little hand for it to sniff. A few cautious sniffs later and the little beast was hesitantly allowing itself to be petted clumsily on the head, even letting a few purrs escape here and there. “Well… I’m glad this had a happy ending,” Kris muttered. The she-cat at her feet went to go inspect her kitten while the male watched happily from his lounge atop an old dusty stool. “We should really, really leave, though. How will Lottie’s junior robotics club survive if I don’t fundraise half the budget with my astonishing selection of baked goods? Come on, old man.” “Sheesh, alright. Does your girl bother you this much?” The tomcat yowled pathetically at Karl in response. “Yeah, I know, buddy… I know. It’s torture.” Kris and the she-cat glanced at one another, a sort of shared understanding that transcended species passing between them. Both of the boys were going to husband jail tonight. “Can we keep them!?” Lottie begged as the kitten scaled her face onto her head as if conquering a mountain. “Yes,” Karl announced, drowning out Kris’s softer “no.” She wanted to protest, but frankly the urge had fled. It wasn’t worth it. Not while Debbie was out there making gains already. “Fine,” Kris conceded at last. She turned to leave, waving a dismissive hand over her shoulder as she made her way back toward the house. “Fine, but you two are keeping them fed and changing their litterboxes. And buying them toys, and taking them to the vet…. And we need to talk about neutering the fella.”

“NO!” Karl stomped a foot angrily. “Don’t disrespect my boy like that! Don’t even joke about it!”

Kris had half a mind to comment that she was referring to him, but decided she’d had enough tantrum delays for one afternoon.

Most hits: In the Warmth of Friends, a fic in which the interplay between two artifacts helps bring Christina back, and Helena and Myka both have to adapt to that. This is my most popular fic by almost any metric on AO3, and I'm super happy that it reverberates with so many people!

Second most kudos: What Goes Around Comes Around (That Halloween Story), how very timely! At Halloween, the walls between the worlds are thin, and someone from eighteen-nineties London might find themselves in twenty-tens Brooklyn. This fic was a beast to write, and I was so glad to be done with it; and now I'm so happy that people like it so much!

Third most comments: At the Heart of the Paradox, a Doctor Who crossover with lots of timey-wimey shenanigans and the most dreadful ending I ever wrote. But don't worry, there's a part two! I actually hand-drew a timeline for this fic, so that I could be sure the wibbly-wobbly-ness checked out. Really happy with how it turned out!

Fourth most bookmarks: And Now You, my behemoth (264K words!!) of a high school AU, in which Helena is an exchange student sent to Colorado Springs, and Myka the ace student who befriends her. When I had finished writing this fic, it was *just* the beginning of September, so I published it "in real time" (much like Dracula Daily), uploading each chapter on the day that the events in that chapter happened. (And yes, I had a calendar for that. In fact, I had a multi-column table (color-coded, of course) to keep track of the timeline for this fic!)

Fifth most words: Quickening, the only not-Warehouse-13 fic in this list! This is a Star Trek Voyager fic, with some TNG characters thrown in the mix. It is also part 3 in a series that itself is a continuation of an earlier series, the entirety of which was my first foray into fan fiction at the tender age of 33 😅 Still very near and dear to my heart!

Least words: A Dancing Tortoise, a double drabble set in my Chrysalis series, about one of the songs from the Carnival of Animals, and Helena's musings over it.

Hi! I’m Mastani, she/they/he pronouns, I’m a 1.5/2nd Generation Indian-American, and I cosplay and write fanfiction!

Q: How did you start creating in the fandom? What did you wish to bring into the fandom?

A: Almost five years ago, Laina @ohtheclevernessofme1972 convinced me to join the HPRP community. She and everyone else were so supportive of my desire to bring my culture and background to the Harry Potter characters. Eventually, I also started writing fanfiction again!

Q: What things about s/r as characters or in their relationship inspire you to create around them?

A: I think that they are very complex characters that really demonstrate how external factors affect your life, whether you like it or not. Their relationship, whether platonic, romantic, or anything in-between or outside, is also so fascinating in its potential to evolve. Wolfstar is constantly changing, and all its interpretations are totally feasible to imagine.

Q: What things would you like to highlight about the Wolfstar fandom and your experience in it?

A: My main dips into the fandom are when I cosplay Sirius, and every time, I feel so much love. The fandom is so open to any interpretations of Sirius, and it does wonders to make someone feel accepted.

Q: What type of content do you wish you saw more in the fandom?

A: This is entirely self-indulgent, but Godfather/Uncle!Sirius just make me feel so warm inside. There’s a love inside Sirius that only gets touched upon inside the books. AUs where he gets to interact with Harry as a child or teen outside the pressure of a war are just so calming and warming.

Q: What is your favourite wolfstar fancontent (fic/fanart/gifset/etc) and how does it inspire you?

A: Y’all, I have so many Wolfstar fics saved that are just stunning and several that are comfort fics. I think the biggest takeaway from all of them is the comfort the boys find in each other. All of them are AUs, and I’m inspired to depict my Wolfstar as something kind, gentle, and communicative.

Q: Which of your own identities inform your creative processes? How has that process been for you?

A: All of them! But more specifically, my racial background informs most of my process. My process is… Sporadic, to say the least. However, when I do get struck with an idea, I have to create it almost instantly. One example, Wolfstar-related, is that my Sirius cosplay has long hair, half-up in a bun. I feel like desi!Sirius would celebrate his heritage by growing his hair long, which also is a nice, “screw you,” to societal and familial constraints.

Q: What advice do you have for other content creators with diverse backgrounds in the fandom? What would you say to people that might feel they don’t have the “right” history/experience/characteristics to participate in the creation of content related to Wolfstar?

A: think the best advice for participation I have comes from the iconic Jay @siriussly-serious, Rest in Power. “Go. Get in. Dive in. Fucking head first. Fuck that, cannonball your butt right in there and make a damn splash…” There is no, “right,” history/experience/background. These characters are fictional, but they can reflect our world. Our world is not homogenous. So why should fictional worlds and characters be that way? These stories are ours, and we shape them to be whatever we want them to be. If you want to create, that’s all the prerequisite you need.

Q: How could we build a more diverse fandom?

A: This blog is a great example of how to build a diverse fandom. Celebrating creators with diverse backgrounds and being loudly supportive of them makes us want to stay. Finding communities that celebrate, not just accept, can make a world of difference. So, raise your voice and love on your favorite creators.

Q: What’s your favourite thing to modify in Sirius’s or Remus’s characterizations to bring new perspectives to them?

A: I’m a huge communicator, so improving character communication is something I love to do. I like to create fluff, and this change lets me focus on the gentler parts of Sirius and Remus, or the parts that need some love, e.g. mental health. It also lets me flesh out their senses of humor more, like their dislike of cats (in my headcanons).

Q: What does diversity mean to you? What does that encompass in fanish spaces?

Q: What are your ideas about the notions of culture and ethnicity? How do you relate to those notions?

A: I find culture and ethnicity to overlap in many ways, as they both pertain to group characteristics. I’m not an anthropologist, so I don’t know the detailed differences between the two. However, in my quick searches, it feels, to me, that culture is a bit broader and ethnicity is more geographic. So, I’m culturally Indian-American and ethnically Gujarati Indian (Gujarat is the state in India). I find these notions to be helpful when defining and describing my experiences. For example, among desis (and other brown folks), saying I’m generation 1.5/2 tells them that I straddle American/Western and Indian culture. If I tell another Indian that I’m Gujarati, they instantly know the kind of foods I grew up with and the language my parents speak. It’s a streamlined way of explaining my experiences, and as a science brained person, it makes life easier for me.

Q: Is there a page/organization/institution you would recommend for fans to search/read when it comes to learning about diversity?

A: With the tool that is social media, there are so many activists and creators that are willing and able to teach about diversity. On my page, I keep a page titled, “Resources for Justice.” This page has a wide variety of social justice resources on it. Google is great, but you also want to cross-check your sources. However, I feel like the best way to learn is to ask questions. Do so respectfully and ensure the person you’re asking has the energy/time/compensation to answer. Especially if you’ve done some research ahead of time, I find that many folks are willing to have a discussion - but again, check with the person first. Trust is paramount in these conversations.

Q: Is there a project/organization that you want to hype?

A: Oh, I could name so many. However, the ones I want to shout out here are Chrysalis - Gender Identity Matters and Raze Collective. As many of you know, Jay @siriussly-serious passed away recently, and in his name, we’re promoting/donating to these charities. Chrysalis - GIM offers online and in-person mental health support for trans and nonbinary people in his area and Raze Collective supports LGBTQIA+ performers. Ami @ami-acts and a few others (I apologize for not remembering exactly who - I’ll message the mods if I remember/please add on if you know) organized this. Links are below.

How did you get into Glee and Glee fandom?

I enjoyed Glee from the beginning, and had been a Darren Criss fan from Starkid, but didn't get intensely into fandom until season 4.  Something about that season's Klaine storyline sent me looking for fic, and I was hooked.

In general, what drew you into writing (and/or creating)?

I always liked to write, and had dabbled in fanfic much earlier (Buffy fic on LJ) but something about the Klaine arc in Season 4 just compelled me to write about it.  This also coincided with a point in my life when my family obligations eased up just enough to give me a little bit of time to entertain myself with writing.

What was it about Glee that made you decide to write fanfic for it?

As noted above, I can't really describe it any better than just the Klaine storyline in Season 4, and how the two of them drew me in.  I wanted better things for them than what canon was giving us, and I wanted to know every little thing that happened between them that we didn't see in the episodes.

Have you been a part of other fandoms before? Have you written fanfiction pre-glee?

Pre-Glee, just a little bit - sporadic Buffy fic on Live Journal.  Since Glee I have been in many other fandoms, and have written thousands and thousands of words of fic in H50, Check Please, MCU, and most recently Schitt's Creek, as well as a few stories here and there in other fandoms.

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I'm not sure - I can't think of any!  I have a Sherlock kid-fic that I've never been able to finish.  I'm indulging myself with a memory loss fic at the moment - I had tried to write memory loss when I started writing Chrysalis, but that turned into coma-recovery hurt-comfort instead.  I'm not good at fics that stay sad, although I don't mind a little bittersweet mixed in.

Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?

Mpreg.  Tragic ending. 

How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

I'm writing two fics for Fandom Trumps Hate, so both of those ideas are percolating.  But I'm also just coming off finishing one of my longest fics (One Night in Milwaukee, a Schitt's Creek David x Patrick fic that may end up at about 60k) and often after a major effort like that I have to rest for a bit and let my brain recover.  Usually if I just take it easy new ideas will show up soon.

New Series I’m Writing!

Hey everyone, while I’m still working on Chrysalis, it’s been a few days since an update and I figured I should talk about why:

I’ve got another RWBY fic I’m working on! It’s been something I’ve felt drawn to for a while now.

I’d like to tell you about the Lepidoptera AU.

In essence, it’s my own Canon-Divergence Mirror Universe. It’s Remnant, but each character’s backstory got slightly changed, and that’ll have a cascading effect for the entirety of the canon story.

I’ve got four planned fics for this world.

The first, and the one I’m working on at present, is Holding the World On Their Shoulders, which will follow Cinder Rhodes (previously Fall), May Marigold, Marrow Amin, and Winter Schnee as they attend Atlas Academy. It deals in role swap regarding each character’s stories, so if you’re one of the people that’s overheard my ranting about how much I love the Winter/May/Cinder role swap premise Tumblr’s been talking about recently, this is where I’ll be exploring that. Of course, I didn’t come up with the idea, I’m just writing my take on it.

The other fics will consist of a Canon-Divergence fic following Team RWBY through the Fall of Beacon and everything beyond, and two OC team stories for those that are interested in reading them. These OC stories won’t be necessary to understand the events of the more canon-friendly fics, the most you’ll deal with is the occasional cameo.

As for its name, Lepidoptera AU is a subtle nod to the foundation upon which this AU is built: How a few small changes will butterfly effect, and that the end result may be drastically different than the canon we know.

I know this arguably falls into rewrite territory, so I’ll specify that I adore CRWBY, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for them. This is not meant to “be better than” RWBY canon by any means. It’s just a creative fan project.

One last thing: True to my writing usually is, there’ll be a LOT of trans rep across these fics. So, if you wanna see stuff revolving around May Marigold, who is canonically trans, Weiss, Mercury, Emerald, and several other canon characters that will be portrayed as trans in Lepidoptera, and/or Hunter, April, Rusty, and several trans original characters that will be in the OC fics, feel free to check them out as they appear! I will give a heads up that a slight majority of my trans rep will probably be transfemme rep, since I know the most about writing transfemme characters, but there will be transmasc and enby characters present.

I've never seen an iteration of werewolves that melt like caterpillar in a chrysalis to transform. it might look a little goofy in practice but also a person just melting is probably horrifying. its also the longest thing I've done, and I'm surprised I'm still keeping up with it.

loss some au stuff happens, stan dies, and stanford has to cope while in college and I think I did nicely with it. I achieved my goal of upsetting everyone I show it to, and I think I portrayed grief in a realistic way, basing it on my own experiences.

just dial once again I based an experience on my own, and I think I benefited from that. just 400 or so words of gut wrenching anxiety that's preventing stan from saying anything to his brother while he's on the road. its neat!

just a little longer another that's more for the concept than the writing, and I might rewrite and involve some more violence. I just think it'd be neat!

home this is one of the two that's just nice for the sake of being nice, which isn't my strong suit but I don't think this is that bad honestly.

remembrance and once again this is more for the idea than the writing. I just think it'd be nice if a bunch of nice memories rushing back after getting his mind wiped made stan a bit emotional, and I'm definitely gonna rewrite this eventually bc I like that a lot

Fandom FYIs: I don’t know what a pro ship or anti is and at this point I’m too afraid to ask. I do not care about discourse and drama (beyond watching from afar like a shady bitch) and am generally of the opinion that you gotta just let people vibe and block liberally. I am a massive OC x canon fan. This includes second person reader fics. I tend to avoid canon x canon like the plague due to truly deranged behavior I’ve been on the receiving end of over the years, and I’m over it. I also have to admit that I have no real plans to ever write that fic, though… 😅 It was just a bit of brainstorming. The truth is, I have never watched Miraculous Ladybug so my knowledge about it is very limited, I would have to watch it for real before writing a fic. And I really don’t have time for that. Still glad you enjoyed the idea, though! And I can certainly talk a bit more about the points you mentioned.

1) Marianne certainly is a fancy villain, haha. I enjoy toying with her. I don’t know if I have already mentioned this, but in my head, I have two different concepts of Nyo!France: Marianne and Francine. While Francine is basically a female version of Francis, with a personality very similar to his own (and his colour scheme, too – ash blonde hair and periwinkle blue eyes), Marianne is based on the comments Himaruya made on his Nyo design – that was supposed to be snobbier than Francis. (And she also has light golden brown hair and lilac eyes, instead.) There wasn’t much more said, but I built her personality from there. She does share some characteristics with Francis, but she’s snobbier, more capricious, and also egocentric to the point of narcissism. Everything she does is self-serving – even loving other people. She does care for others other than herself and is even very protective (or even borderline possessive) of those people she’s fond of, but she is always at the centre of her world and treats everybody else like props, basically. With the people she loves, she doesn’t consider their wishes/needs but tries to shape them to fulfil the role she wants for them. She doesn’t even realize it’s bad, in part.

Now, all this doesn’t necessarily make her a villain. She could also, with time, learn to curb a bit her egocentrism and become more mature. This part of her personality wouldn’t vanish, but she would learn to control it and instead boost her protective side into becoming compassionate and supportive instead of controlling. It could go either way, depending on her life experience. For example, I have already used this figure of Marianne (as Francis’s mother) in both Chrysalis and AKGtBaBB/BtBP, and while she wouldn’t win a mother-of-the-year (or person-of-the-year in general) award any time soon, she isn’t such an awful person, either.

I also do think she’s the kind of person who could turn into a proper ‘villain’ if the right conditions are met, however. And this is what happens into that MLB AU. She finds a lot of power in her hands – more than she can handle – and lets it go over her head. Moreover, her relationship with Arthur doesn’t help. She got him completely wrapped around her finger so he doesn’t question her behaviour or her motivations, he only supports her – while, to grow into a better person, Marianne would need somebody opposing her and calling out her actions.

2) Dorky Matthew is adorable, haha. I mean, he’s a dork in canon, too, but this is overshadowed and hindered by his being so shy and insecure. But behind a mask and being a superhero? The effect would be destructive, haha. On one hand, he feels freer to express himself since nobody knows who he is. (Which, as a 14/15-year-old and an anime fan, means a quite embarrassing behaviour, haha. Corny lines, poses, and all that.) Then, there’s the fact he feels like he has to show his opponents he doesn’t fear them. (To show they won’t win and break his spirit, basically. And to be supportive of Ladybug, too, whom he does realize doubts of herself, at times. So, he has to be a rock for her, too.) And what’s better than laughing in their face instead of being intimidated? …This is where all the puns come from. He really doesn’t realize he tends to go a bit overboard and look like he isn’t taking things seriously instead of simply confident, lol.

3) About Natalya… to be honest, I just used her to fill that role because I was told Kagami is some sort of ice queen who, over time, starts loosening up and trying make friends. And I thought Natalya could be a good fit for a similar role. The rest of her family… Ivan is a businessman. A ruthless one, who looks after his family and provides for them but doesn’t hesitate to destroy people who are in his way. (He doesn’t resort to illegal activities, but he certainly isn’t compassionate or open to compromises.) Family is everything for him, and doing well in his business – no matter what happens to others – is the best way to ensure their well-being. 

Iryna cares a lot for family, too, but in a different way. She’s sweet, compassionate, and believes in caring about people emotional well-being before the economic one. She never had what would be conventionally called ‘big ambitions’ – she wanted a normal job and to take care of her family first. She never focused too much on her career, she even stopped working once she got pregnant with Natalya – she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom for the first years of her daughter’s life. Her husband’s salary would have granted them a comfortable life. But her husband died, and Iryna would have been in a very tight spot if it hadn’t been for Ivan, who basically took her and Natalya in. Now, Iryna works for Ivan as some sort of personal assistant – she knows she can’t change his ways and grim outlook on life, but she wants to lighten his workload a bit, if she can. 

But Natalya (who is still very young, too) has never understood this. Growing up, while she has always loved her mother, she got to almost despise Iryna’s lifestyle. Natalya sees her as a person without ambitions, since she’s just working for Ivan and not trying to make a name for herself. She doesn’t understand that for Iryna, the job isn’t a priority – her priority is her family. Iryna’s happy doing whatever as long as it grants her family a comfortable life – and, more importantly, it leaves her some spare time to spend with the people she loves. This is her most important goal. So, she’d still rather earn less than have to sacrifice the time spent with her family for it. Natalya is still too young to see this as worthwhile. All she sees is that her mother didn’t have a prestigious job and, without Ivan, she would have been in a very tough spot after her husband’s death. Natalya doesn’t want that to happen to her – she wants to be like her Uncle Ivan, instead. With a job so prestigious that it will always make her able to provide for herself and her family, no matter what happens. (And she kind of hero-worships her uncle, too – seeing him always so confident and determined, never backing off from everything. She wants to become just like him.) So, she tries to imitate his work ethics and general outlook – and doesn’t indulge in social interactions because they’re useless and a distraction, unless they are with selected people who could give her something back. Being lonely is inconsequential – the price to pay to be at the top. She doesn’t really need anybody but her family. (Or so she tries to convince herself, at least… Also because by now, even if she starts having the wish/impulse to interact with other teens around her age, she’s clueless as to how to do it because she never worked on her social interactions skills. She ends up feeling awkward and self-conscious, not in control of the situation as, for once, she can’t tell what the ‘right way’ to behave is. For somebody as used to excellence and perfection as she is, it’s very uncomfortable and hard to overcome.)

I can’t remember the name of the fic, and I’m not 100% sure of the author (may have been someone named “chrysalis escapist” since I read a ton of their fics back in the day) but it was fantastic.

My 11 Questions

First time I've been tagged in one of these. Thanks @ta-dala!

My 11 Questions are: 1. What is the “craziest” thing you’ve done for the love of something?

It's probably too tame to be considered crazy, but I shuffled my financial priorities and scratched up enough money to go to New Orleans Comic Con, held the first weekend of January 2017. Turns out I didn't have to skip a bill payment to pay for a meet-and-greet with Carrie Fisher, but my baby sister and her husband got iced in at Alexandria and couldn't go with me. So I jumped up in the Carrie Fisher memorial service the con held and got to tell Peter Mayhew, his wife, T-Bob Hebert, and everyone else there what me and my sister had planned on telling Carrie: my sister's legal name is Leia and it's both our faults.

LOL, okay, really the crazy is that story. I like to joke that Mom had her kids with the Star Wars films: I'm 1977, second daughter 1980, and my baby sister was born January 12, 1984. <i>Return of the Jedi</i> was one of the first films I got to see in the actual theater with my father. This was the pre-VCR days, so I guess I knew the other two from TV showings and storybooks because I knew the story rabidly. So that was 1983 whenever the local theater got the movie.

Fast forward to January 1984. My parents can't agree on my baby sister's name and bring her home from the hospital without one. Mom insists on all of us having the same set of initials and they finally decided on a first name that didn't make the cut when I was born. The middle name was harder, so she called six-year-old me and my three-year-old sister into her bedroom while she was resting and asked us for L-names. "Leia! It's gotta be Leia, Leia's the best name in the whole galaxy!" If you're guessing my three-year-old sister didn't get a suggestion, you would be right. So the baby of the family has Leia on her birth certificate and now she uses it instead of her first name (which turned out to be one of those every other girl has a variation of the same name for her age group).

2. What is your ultimate bucket-list travel destination? Europe, though I'd really like to spend more time off the beaten touristy paths or live somewhere to become localized. Or if that's not possible, one of the river cruises. But I'd settle for one of the whirlwind tours of the capital cities just to say I've gone.

3. Cats or dogs? Cats, even though I'm cat-less right now. But my parents have a dog so I have proof that I am most definitely a cat person.

4. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? Right now, I'd settle for a country in which the prevailing attitude looking at United State politics is "what the hell is wrong with those people?" This is also the attitude of a time in the future to live in if I had a time machine.

5. Write me a piece of advise that you’d go back and give to your younger self. Speaking of the time machine, lol. Okay, kid, Mom sent you off to college without telling you that PCOS runs in the family and that leads to diabetes. You have it so here is an eating plan so all the free sugar you're about to get exposed to doesn't lead to weight gain that I'm still struggling with and hopefully we'll put off the diabetes diagnosis for a few more years.

6. Share one sentence of something you’ve written and tell me why you like it. “If you feed them and treat them nicely, they’ll do just about anything you ask of them.” -- Luke from the Byss AU. In canon, Palpatine's clone used Sith alchemy to change rancors to chrysalis rancors. Luke doesn't approve and explains why.

7. Can you still love/be a fan of something/someone and be critical of a choice or decision? Why or why not? That depends. Works put out for public consumption are fair game and fanworks are having a critical conversation with the source material. But the closer you are to the creator, the more tact you should have. "What kind of feedback are you looking for?" should be asked. Critical of a choice or decision should never be a personal attack but a way to make the work or the next work better.

8. Rogue One. Dead or alive?  ;) I'm good with both. Zombie Rogue One FTW! Kidding. In my Rescue the Farmboy AU (current WIP), the mission happened pretty much as on screen without Leia's involvement as a way to get the Death Star plans (she and her copy of the plans ended up on Tatooine) and the Rogue Squadron will be formed in their memory. But I'm enjoying everyone else's stories in which they live.

9. You can only eat one food the rest of your life. What is it? Meat, but you better give me a variety. Diabetes cuts out a lot of fun with these answers.

10. Give me your Desert Island Discs list. Okay limited to eight. Imagine Dragons and Florence + the Machine are high on my replay right now along with Star Wars soundtracks, but those are mostly for inspiration purposes. *Sigh* I know I'd get annoyed with the selection before long. I'd actually probably take the fanmixes I've made for various fics instead. That'll be a bigger selection of musical genres.

11. What is your favorite curse word? I tend to drop the f-bomb far too regularly according to my mother. But it's so versatile a word!
