Found a picture of my sister and I on Halloween from nineteen years ago. We're dressed up to go trick-or-treating, both wearing cheap costumes from some local party supply store, caught in the middle of some awkward facial expressions by my mom's digital camera

I haven't seen my sister in person since before the pandemic, but we talk on Discord. We both dressed up to go to work today, both in slightly nicer costume pieces, still making awkward faces at the camera when we traded pictures, and I dunno, it was kinda nice to think about

Over 700 miles apart and we're both wearing impractical shoes and silly things on our heads, still kinda connected by the little ways we find joy in the day

Ah yes the hatchetfieldening <3 I was there when the shift started n I watched the first nightmare time episode n black Friday but neither massively impressed me so I stopped 😔😔 I'm still mostly an older musicals girlie bcos of the nostalgia of watching them on loop at age 13 (except mamd ani and firebringer. 13yo me said fuck those ones) but deck the halls of northville high is a banger I still listen to on occasion

In 2018 I had the amazing idea to create a photo album as a cheap and easy last minute christmas gift for my parents.

Since I came up with this idea like two days before Christmas I couldn't order the photos online like a normal person would do, since they wouldn't be delivered in time, so I went to the drugstore and started printing out like 300 photos right then and there. On an afternoon, right after work. Two days before Christmas. When everyone and their mother probably had the same idea, usually just in much much smaller scale.

So I stood there, blocking one of the three photo machines in the store for I think at least 4 1/2 hours, much to the annoyance of the staff and every other customer who just wanted to print one or two fotographs to give to their grandparents or so. I finished printing like 10 minutes before the store closed.

As it turned out then, making a photo album was neither easy or cheap and I think I spend the next two days without any sleep while finishing up this thing.

My mother loved it so much that she's been requesting one every year since.

They doubted this is what Nat 'King' Cole meant when he sung 'chestnuts roasting by an open fire'.

The world was on fire, Christmas was postponed, Santa was coming to shelters instead of homes if he came at all. They figured it would probably make his job a bit easier, whatever he decided to do. And now they just had to hope the shelter was far enough away from the fires that they wouldn't have to move again.

Since August, they had been told that this year would be deadly - a fire season that promised raging bushfires, lost homes, and casualties. And they had prepared. But no amount of preparation could steel you for the raging bull of an out of control bushfire, heading straight for your home, just after you had put up the Christmas tree.

The smoke was apparently so bad it could be seen from space. They wondered what it would be like to be that far removed from the situation, to not have to wonder if you would have to rebuild your house and start your life from scratch afterwards. If you would live to see afterwards.

As it was, the people of southern New South Wales worked hard to make sure Christmas was still Christmas, even without most of the family, and the comforts of home. Someone had saved a speaker and started playing Christmas music. The world fell silent as someone crooned about walking in a winter wonderland, and letting it snow because you have nowhere else to be. Someone laughed and another someone started crying when the line 'but the fire is so delightful' played loud and clear.

They would give everything they had likely already lost to be snowed in, huddled around the fire making them feel cosy and warm. Not this.

I have really, really been putting off talking about January but the longest month of my life is finally over so it’s time to finally wrap it up and for the first time in a very long time it’s going to be a (very) long one! For some context, 2023 was the year of the super mega awful reading slump and I was fully expecting to have brought it into 2024…
