somewhere in the universe, there's a version of remus lupin listening to christmas songs on the radio with sirius' gift infront of him.

a small, cheap gift. all that he could manage buying but he thought - hoped, really - that christmas would be the best time for them to connect again during the war. christmas is a time for love, right?

that's what he thought in first year when the marauders made christmas decorations for their dorm and remus truly connected with them for the first time.

and in second year, when he got invited to james' house and spent the holidays there with the potters, surrounded by fresh baked and a constant stream of christmas songs.

in third year when they all stay behind at hogwarts and filled their days with snowball fights and (stupidly) iceskating on the black lake.

in fourth year when only him and sirius stayed at hogwarts. when sirius kissed him for the first time.

in fifth year when sirius handed over his gift secretly in the dorm, and in sixth when sirius got too excited about the boots remus scrounged for him and he lunged into a kiss without even considering that their friends were there.

in seventh year as they all celebrated their last christmas at hogwarts, holding hands atop the table, promising nothing would separate them. not even the war.

christmas is a time for love, so remus bought a stupid present. a stupid, small present that he hoped would help mend whatever bridge they've managed to build between them.

it's been sitting in the back of the closet since halloween. right next to sirius' birthday present. and right next to a box of years-old paper decorations that have never made him feel quite this lonely.
