MORTAL ENGINES (2018) Si il y a un angle important sous lequel aborder cette nouvelle superproduction de Peter Jackson, ce n’est pas celui d’une quelconque fidélité d’adaptation: MORTAL ENGINES, au-delà de son simple aspect de transition sur grand écran d’une oeuvre littéraire, est tout d’abord le premier film de Christian Rivers. Le réalisateur a un CV énorme, et est l’ami de longue date du roi néo-zélandais du cinéma: à la fois story-boarder et directeur des effets spéciaux de la plupart des long-métrages de Jackson, Rivers nous explose les rétines d’entrée -l’Oscar des meilleurs effets visuels pour l’émouvant remake de KING KONG (2005), c’était mérité-, MORTAL ENGINES faisant preuve d’un gigantisme visuel jamais vu auparavant. Une prouesse technique permanente et hallucinante, dès que les scènes épiques laissent des VFX ultra-photoréalistes nous montrer d’inimaginables courses de villes entières motorisées sur le Terrain de Chasse: cette vaste étendue est tout ce qu’il reste de l’ancien monde, classant le film dans la catégorie “blockbuster post-apo” aux forts relents steampunk -oui, y’a du BIOSHOCK et du STEAMBOY (2004) qui traînent ici et là!-. MORTAL ENGINES s’auto-assume, ne livrant pas les explications quant à l’origine d’un fort probable holocauste nucléaire ayant à jamais changé la face du monde: Londres est devenue une colossale cité mobile, avalant littéralement les plus petites, qui tâchent de survivre dans les Outlands, et le reste du background semble déjà acquis, l’intrigue s’axant sur l’action présente plutôt que sur un scénario à énigmes. Bien que les parallèles évidents nous interpellent pendant son visionnage, MORTAL ENGINES diffère de MAD MAX FURY ROAD (2015), avec son monde post-apo désertique et ses course-poursuites dynamiques -l’excellent B.O. de Junkie XL n’y est pas pour rien, allez l’écouter-, des LORD OF THE RINGS (2001-2003) en termes de dimension épique -on se répète un peu, oui-, quelques prestations se démarquent de ce rythme très inégal: l’acteur Stephen Lang -AVATAR (2009), DON’T BREATHE (2016)- qui incarne Shrike, intérssant personnage de par sa condition de nécro-soldat/relique du passé en très étroit rapport avec l’anti-héro��ne Hester, apporte son lot de consistance à une mise en scène cousue de fil blanc... Mais hélas, MORTAL ENGINES souffre objectivement du passif de Christian Rivers, plus de métier dans le domaine des SFX/VFX que réalisateur confirmé: si on se régale des designs, de la direction artistique, et de cette étape visuelle historique du Cinéma, le long-métrage devient timide dès lors qu’il s’agit d’étoffer le charisme de ses personnages -Stephen Lang écrase Hugo Weaving, un comble alors que l’ex-agent Smith de THE MATRIX (1999) est taillé pour le rôle!-. Mais revenons au début de cette review: comment aborder ce blockbuster? Et bien comme une prod’ Peter Jackson: sans égaler la révélation Neill Blomkamp comme en 2009 avec le fantastique DISTRICT 9, il faut défendre MORTAL ENGINES, vision gigantissime de son réalisateur, livrant ici un étrange format -combien de film de 2h disposent d’effets spéciaux aussi monstrueux? aucun-, auquel une seule chose manque: une narration en béton. Un premier essai convaincant, qui parvient à offrir un univers dystopique fouillé et magnifique: et pourtant, c’est le premier grand échec au box-office des Stone Streets Studios de Wellington, New Zealand. Une jolie “démo technique” de deux heures, dépaysante mais avec un goût de réchauffé dont il est impossible de se défaire: à la fois beau et vide. WE WANT MORE /20

This event is actually quite loosely described in the #book but it's beautifully visualized in the movie. Here, I've also tried to recreate London as shown in the movie with some variations that symbolically reference to key milestones from the books and the movie, such as the MEDUSA symbol, the spire, and the like. I also added in some aspects of the traction city, London, that actually references our real-life London, such as the Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, and so on. There are some spider-like explorer machines and an airship also included in the massive detailing for this fictional London. I also found Hester's #characterdesign in the movie quite interesting because her clothes make her far more bad-ass than her personality indicates. I liked the detailing on her trousers alluding to how resourceful she had to be in the Out-Country.
