NCIS fans, get ready to see Gibbs like you've never seen him before.

CBS announced Friday that its flagship procedural is getting a '90s-set prequel series, NCIS: Origins, which will follow a younger version of Mark Harmon's beloved character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, as a newly minted special agent making a name for himself at Camp Pendleton. While Harmon will be returning to the NCIS franchise to narrate and executive-produce Origins, he won't be starring — which raises a big question.

Who should play young Gibbs?

Of course some major names come to mind, guys like Glen Powell and Austin Butler. But they're securely movie stars at this point and not likely to commit to leading a network show. (There's also Harmon's son, Sean Harmon, who has played a young Gibbs on NCIS, but he's exec-producing Origins with his dad.) So, the EW staff has some ideas about who should be your grandma's next crush.

Lucas Till

Lucas Till is already in the CBS family and proved he can handle an fan-favorite prequel character with MacGyver. Plus, that jawline screams young Mark Harmon. —Sydney Bucksbaum

Structurele kleur

…Een kleur staat je beter en hij past bij goud.

Zo saai als je wit bent en het maakt veel ouder.

Ik snap niet hoe het kan dat je er niet van houdt.

Oh kom in de zon…

Bruinen

Aan eind van de winter, wanneer de donkere dagen eindelijk achter de rug zijn, is het grootste gedeelte van mijn lichaam wit. Mijn kop heeft vaak, met dank aan winterse buitenactiviteiten, nog wel wat kleur, maar mijn buik, rug en bovenbenen geven daarentegen bijna licht.

Als het weer het enigszins toelaat, maak ik dan ook graag een ouderwetse ‘Chris Zegers’: even het shirtje uit! Lekker het lichaam in de zon. Verstandig, dat wel, dus er wordt gesmeerd, maar de melanocyten moeten en zullen werken. Bruin, bruiner, bruinst.

Als de zon op je huid schijnt, of beter gezegd de uv-straling je huid doordringt, gaan de melanocyten in onze huid aan het werk. Om te voorkomen dat de uv-stralen te diep de huid doordringen wordt er extra melanine aanmaken oftewel extra pigment. Door dit pigment krijgen we een ‘kleurtje’. Welk kleurtje is afhankelijk van in welke hoeveelheid je welk soort melanine we in de huid hebben: EuMelanine geeft een bruinzwarte tint PheoMelanine geelrood.

Pigment

Pigmenten ontlenen hun kleurwerking aan de absorptie van bepaalde golflengten van het zichtbare licht. Een pigment dat alle golflengten absorbeert heeft een zwarte kleur, een pigment dat alle golflengten reflecteert is wit. Zover waarschijnlijk niet veel nieuws. Een pigment dat vooral de rode, oranje en gele golflengtes absorbeert, zal een groenblauwe kleur vertonen. Het pigment vertoont dus de kleur van het licht dat erop reflecteert. En ook dat wist u waarschijnlijk al. Zo staat het tenslotte op Wikipedia. Maar wat u misschien niet wist is dat veel dieren maar deels of helemaal geen gebruik maken van pigment, zo leerde ik met dank aan een gouden tor die levenloos in het zwembad van mijn vakantieverblijf dreef.

Structurele kleur

In plaats van pigment kun je ook gebruik maken van structuur. Sterker nog, structuur creëert de flitsendste kleuren. Het prachtige blauw en groen op de veren van een pauw, structuur, de iriserende kleuren van parelmoer, structuur en de metallic groengouden kleur op de rug van een gouden tor, precies, ook structuur.

De evolutie introduceerde de zogenoemde structurele of fysieke kleuren zo’n pak hem beet 500 miljoen jaar geleden. Waarschijnlijk omdat het in sommige gevallen voordeliger was dan het gebruik maken van pigment. Het aanmaken van pigment kost tenslotte de nodige energie: ik ben bek af na een dag zonnebaden. Maar het kan natuurlijk ook een toevallig voordelige mutatie zijn. Wie weet om de blits te maken bij de mannetjes dan wel de vrouwtjes.

Structurele kleuren worden veroorzaakt door een bepaalde structuur in een pigmentloos oppervlak. Deze structuren weerkaatsen het licht op een specifieke wijze. Bepaalde kleuren worden versterkt ander verzwakt. Er zijn twee varianten, namelijk de iriserende, de meeste bekende, en de kijkhoekonafhankelijke structurele kleur.

Iriserende kleuren

Iriseren kennen we allemaal van zeepbellen en olievlekken op het water, u als lezer kent het ongetwijfeld ook van de zeeoor, paardenzadel en pareloester. Bij iriserende kleuren kunt u afhankelijk van de kijkhoek alle kleuren van de regenboog verwachten. Zodra er in u of het object beweging zit, is de kleur nooit hetzelfde. Helaas kan dit dynamische karakter van iriseren, door die afhankelijkheid, niet op een foto worden vastgelegd. Geloof me: ik heb het meerdere malen geprobeerd!

Wat wel lukt is om de metallic glans van structurele kleuren vast te leggen. De heldere groene en blauwe tinten van de veer van een pauw komen prima over. Op de foto ziet u vervolgens een van de mogelijke kleuren. Hetzelfde geld voor het schild van de gouden tor. Hierbij moet wel vermeld worden dat zowel de pauw als de tor gebruik maken van een combinatie van pigment en structuur.

kijkhoekonafhankelijke structurele kleuren

Er zijn ook structurele kleuren waarbij het niet uitmaakt of je het beest nou van links, rechts, voor, achter, boven of boven bekijkt. De kleur blijft altijd gelijk. In dit geval is er dus geen pigment nodig. Zo is het blauw op de vleugels van de vlinder Morpho didius volledig fysiek en ongeacht hoe je ernaar kijkt altijd hetzelfde.

Of er dichter bij huis ook beesten zijn die gebruik maken van kijkhoekonafhankelijke structurele kleuren weet ik niet precies. Wat ik wel weet is dat we het bij de groene of blauwe beesten moeten zoeken. Een structuur die het rode licht – met een lange golflengte – versterkt, zal ook het ‘korte’ blauwe licht óók altijd versterken, zo blijkt uit onderzoek. Een intense rode kijkhoekonafhankelijke kleur bestaat daarom niet in de natuur.

Postlude

Weer wat wijzer leg ik de gouden tor te drogen op de rand van het zwembad: die bewaar ik! Daarna slenter ik naar mijn ligbed in de zon. De buik is aan de beurt.

I had always known what I like. I mean, in terms of men. If you put my crushes and celebrity crushes and line them up together, they look quite... distinctly alike.

For example, my first ever crush was Kevin Zegers in Air Bud movies. My crushes in the past 5 years consist of Sebastian Stan, David Tennant, Tom Ellis, Tom Hardy, Rami Malek, Oscar Issac, Ben Barnes, and a brief confusing Jurrassic Park Jeff Goldblum phrase.

So I drew the line there. Dark, tall, beautiful eyes, and look good with a beard. I could even tell the similarities between Seb's face shape and a couple of my real life crushes and I thought, yeah, that's how I like them.

Then I crashed and fell head over heel for a 52-year-old, internet's new boyfriend, whom MY MOM had a crush on Owen Wilson and I said to my sisters while we were watching Night at the Museum for the third time this year (the other two were because we all miss Rami Malek. Ahkmenrah is a whole another story but this is not the time.) that I didn't get why I liked him this much. He didn't fit in my types and I didn't even prefer blonds.

(Notice how him being 52 wasn't the issue, but him being blond was. I'm not sure if my daddy issue is out of control.)

My two little sisters said in unison: you do!

They kindly pointed me to Chris Hemsworth whose Thor looks caught my eyes and pulled me into the MCU in the first place, Steve Garrigan of Kodaline--another blond, and Mark Hamill who I couldn't help but praise his beauty everytime Star Wars is on.

And of course Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire which I still insist is his best look. Don't sleep on my man Lestat.

So we came to the conclusion that I indeed have a type, and it isn't only dark tall and handsome exclusive, but more like big eyes, long hair, with memorable voices/accents.

My little sister added that facial hair is also crucial.

And it made me think. I remember looking at the cover for You, Me and Dupree dvd in a local store and thinking this guy doesn't look good one bit, but Jedediah got a brief hmm he is cute I guess and they must have been no more than a few years from each other.

(I was about 10 in the early 2000, but I digress.)

So even the lightest of stubbles makes a different I guess, and we aren't going to bring Mobius into this.

I had to add another man in the equation and it was my ideal man, Marshall Eriksen. I asked the girls to fit him in. There must be something about him that made me consider him perfect.

(Like, if I can marry any fictional character, it's always gonna be dear Marshmellow.)

So they ended up with big eyes (HUGE, little one insisted) long hair, great voice, a little rough, and old enough to sign my adoption form/soft enough to be an ideal dad and sadly I have nothing to argue about that, like, at all.

ECHOES OF THE PAST –

The town of Echo, Nevada was founded in 1862 by one Tulio Abreu and Maria Antonio Del Olmo. After the California gold rush made a lot of wolves rich plenty tried to find a similar luck elsewhere. Tulio and Maria never found the wealth they were hoping for but they found so much more. They exchanged their dreams of gold for a small place nestled in the slopes of Toiyabe Range that would end up being their home. It was their goal to make this a community where any wolf could look for happiness – a safe haven. By the summer of 1863 over 1,000 people would call Echo home too.

THE TOWN –

Today Echo is much different now but it hasn’t grown much. With a population a little over 4,000 it’s a small and secluded town, you can say there’s little that ever happens in Echo but that’s not quite the case. It may not be the never sleeping concrete jungle of New York but it’s a community made of the people who have their fate tied to this small town in one way or another. Some were born and raised on the streets of Echo they know every dirt road and every secret place in the creek and went to see the old mine despite their parent’s warnings. While others had faith push them toward Echo – the outsiders that fit perfectly into the community the necessary fresh blood.

It’s not a perfect place to be. Echo has its past bad blood runs thick in a place where wounds heal slowly and sons carry the sins of their fathers.

This is a male characters only roleplay group set in the small fictional town of Echo, Nevada. It takes place in an ABO universe and though there is no actual larger plot to follow, there will always be events and plot drops to keep things interesting and going.  If you have any further questions, the ask box and message chats are open for you.

Bram Stoker’s Shadow Builder (1998)

What’s this?! Bram Stoker’s Shadow Builder? The same Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula? With such credentials, this movie is going to be awesome. I bet the story it’s based on is a horror classic just waiting to be discovered!

Those are the thoughts that passed through my head when I first glimpsed at the holographic VHS tape cover of this horror film. Having now seen it, I can understand why this film has remained obscure. It’s dull and unoriginal. I bet a lot of people wanted to expand on the flimsy Wikipedia article, but after seeing the film, couldn't muster up the energy.

When a group of Satanists summons a demon to destroy the world, Father Jacob Vassey (Michael Rooker) is our only hope. If he can stop the Shadow Builder from capturing young Chris Hatcher (Kevin Zegers) before a solar eclipse taking place in a few days, he will prevent the end of days.

I know it’s unfair to compare this film to others that came later, but the way Shadow Builder plays out, it’s essentially a boring End of Days. A demon is going about sewing destruction and determined to end the world while a tough gun-toting hero who doesn’t play by the rules is tasked with stopping him. I’m not saying the Arnold Schwarzenegger picture is good - In fact, I'd say it's bad, but in a fun way. “Shadow Builder” is not frightening, it doesn’t have any interesting or new ideas and none of the characters are compelling.

You could sharpen Michael Rooker and use him to kill vampires he's so wooden. I’m not sure if director Jamie Dixon was thinking he'd seem extra gruff and gritty by wheezing his way through his dialogue, but he’s never convincing. Characters die, others survive. You don't care. There’s no gore, only a little bit of sleazy nudity to jog you awake. The demon walking around is somewhat interesting to look at. I like the concept of him turning people into solid shadows which crumble when exposed to light. Don't think it's worth watching the movie for. It's more interesting in concept than in execution.

This is the kind of movie you immediately forget. Was there a point to Tony Todd as the eccentric outcast? Not really. His actions could have been done by a more prominent character to eliminate the unnecessary plot strands he brings. Why do the bad guys want to end the world? We’re given a quick explanation that proves that all movie Satanists are morons who will end up getting themselves killed by their own dark lord. How does the movie end? I barely remember.

I can’t say I disliked Shadow Builder, but it’s not bad in a fun or memorable way. I bet many horror fans have seen this movie because copies of it keep getting bought for a couple of bucks and then pawned off or sold at garage sales for someone else to watch and then forget. I can’t fathom anyone not putting this one in the box of movies “to get rid of”. (On VHS, September 22, 2015)
