a/n. i really don't know where i'm going with this, y'all. but getting to role-play as a therapist and explore bakugou's psyche has been lots of fun, so bear with me. please let me know what you think and/or would want to see! maybe that'll give me an idea lol. (1.1k)

at that, the woman’s eyebrows shoot up, disappearing underneath her fringe. “no?”

“you heard me,” bakugou spits instinctively, immediately regretting how hostile that sounded not even a second later. “i mean, no, i didn’t.”

his therapist, apparently unfazed by his show of aggression—she must’ve gotten used to it by now, although he still feels bad when he gets testy—only jots something down in her clipboard before looking back up at him, an inexplicable expression etched across her features.

“do you have any ideas, then, why, for the first time in seemingly forever, you’re fixating on a particular social encounter?”

bakugou barely manages to bite back a scowl.

he hates it—this part. the part where his psychologist obviously has theories as to why he’s acting a certain way or how he’s actually feeling but chooses to ask him instead, in an attempt to draw it out of him.

as if talking about difficult shit in the first place isn’t already painful enough.

and isn’t that what he’s paying her to do? give him answers? why’d he have to be the one to wrack his brain for uncomfortable answers to uncomfortable questions?

“do you?” he then challenges, emboldened by that train of thought just now.

“yes,” she responds truthfully and without missing a beat it somewhat surprises him. “but as i’ve explained to you before, i think it’ll be helpful for you if we try a more active approach on your end so that any insights gleaned from our discussions become more personalized and stick with you longer.”

well, then. fuck.

the lady’s got a point.

“so,” she continues when he doesn’t reply, annoyingly aware her little spiel got to him, “any ideas? working hypotheses?”

“uh,” he starts begrudgingly, eyes roving over the bookshelves lining the room’s walls as he struggles to come up with another angle. then it dawns on him, and he looks directly at the woman. “i didn’t expect to see someone in here, and when i did, it caught me off guard.”

“that may be because most of our clients opt for virtual consultations rather than face-to-face ones.”

“yeah,” he piles on quickly, admittedly thankful for the validation, and for the fact. the absolute last thing he needs is to bump into some extras before and after therapy. “that must be why.”

“but how does that explain your, and i quote, ‘dumb as shit reaction’?”

bakugou instantly feels himself flame. he clears his throat, “i told you, didn’t i? it caught me off guard. how the fuck did you expect me to react?”

that must’ve been a reasonable point, thank the fuck, because the woman pauses in thought before nodding slowly. “i suppose you’re right.”

he narrowly bites back an of course, i am.

but then she’s spouting off again.

“although it’s interesting to me how your immediate reaction was to say hi, when that’s not really…how should i say, your style, based on our prior sessions and your personality test results.”

a pause.

bakugou scrambles for a bulletproof rebuttal. he comes up short.

the lady cocks her head to the side, curious. “how often would you say you mull over social blunders?”

never, he thinks to himself. because they never happen.

“i figured as much,” comes her unexpected reply, and only then does it dawn on him that he said the last bit out loud.

“can we talk about something else?” he finds himself suddenly asking, totally over this entire conversation. he can worry about being a loser and pathetically begging for an out some other time. right now, he just needs a break.

“actually, you’re in luck,” she checks her smartwatch, “the session’s just about to end.”

at that, his shoulders almost instantly sag in relief, which makes the woman laugh. he shoots her a half-hearted glare.

they spend the next few minutes summarizing what has been discussed, as well as the arrangements for the following weeks, with bakugou eventually throwing his bag over his shoulders and bidding her a mumbled goodbye. he tosses her a nod over his shoulder as he crosses the threshold of her office, mind already drifting to what he’s going to cook himself for dinner.

and that, for a typical session, he’s walking out relatively unscathed.

but then he does the stupid thing of looking up from where he was studying his trainers when a door creaks open, and he freezes.

because standing a few feet away from him, right beside the entrance to the restroom, is you, equally frozen.

he doesn’t know how much time passes with him just staring at you like a motherfucking idiot, and you, strangely enough, peering at him back, but it’s you who eventually takes a hammer to the silence.

“h-hi,” you offer, voice soft and quiet, just like how he vaguely remembers it from two weeks ago.

“hey,” comes his gruff reply, which would’ve been immediately followed by a wince at how rough his tone was just now had he not stopped himself in the nick of time.

at least he didn’t stutter.

“…b-bakugou, right?” you ask after a moment of neither of you saying anything, confirming his earlier suspicions.

“right.”

you nod, a polite yet somehow stilted smile on your face, and suddenly he’s mentally slapping himself. since when was he fucking bound to one-word sentences?

he decides then and there that this shit won’t do.

in an attempt to convince himself that no, this is just a weird outlier of an encounter for him, and that no, he’s not a fucking idiot like dunce face, and that yes, he is and is being perfectly fucking normal, he resolves to ask you for your name.

and he was just about to do that—he swears he was—when someone from the other side of the door calls out a name, and you whip to face their direction, breaking eye contact.

“yes, doc!” you holler back, and he watches you as you hesitate in place for a second, before turning to face him with an awkward smile.

“nice meeting you, bakugou-san.”

and then you’re off and shutting the door behind you.

he stands there for what feels like a few minutes, just blinking at the door in front of him, what must be your name echoing—again and again—up to the far recesses of his mind.

then: fuck.

he may or may not have just lied to his therapist.

It just occurred to me that Elisabet doesn't appear to be wearing a Focus.

I admit, I haven't checked to see if any of the other characters presented as holograms appear to be wearing one either, so it's probably just a thing and not at all intentional, but I really like the idea of it being intentional because the implications of that make my brain go brrrrr. I could see Elisabet choosing to get by with an ancient Nokia and a smartwatch rather than use Ted's tech.

I don't like going to the doctor. I don't mind the dentist, and my optometrist is a gem. But I feel like there's just no winning when it comes to seeing an actual doctor.

I had tachycardia earlier today. I've never had that before, and it was a big step up from my typical resting heart rate (like, more than 20 BPM higher on average) and it came on very suddenly during day 8 of a nasty chest cold. Every online resource I could find indicated I should seek medical care to figure out if there was a problem, and the online advice was bolstered by the actual advice of a retired doctor relative.

So I call my doctor! They have literally no availability today or tomorrow. They recommend urgent care, which was my next step anyway. So away I go to urgent care!

Urgent care is such a mess that it took thoroughly reading the after visit notes to fully understand what went wrong: the triage notes misrepresented my heart rate while simply walking around my apartment ("up to 130" try "up to 150"), the after visit summary says my main complaint was respiratory issues (...no), and the nurse practitioner I saw tried to talk me out of any tests whatsoever outside a chest X-ray to check for pneumonia (...I didn't think I had pneumonia in the first place, maybe if they had listened about cardiac symptoms being the main issue we wouldn't have had to do the X-ray at all?!?). And fair is fair, everything came back fine in subsequent testing after I pushed for the tests (yay! huge relief). But I didn't feel listened to AT ALL. And the fucking icing on the cake:

The NP says I should just stop wearing my smartwatch, "if it gives me anxiety". "After all, you wouldn't have even known about the elevated heart rate if you weren't wearing it!" EXCUSE ME I HAD HEART PALPITATIONS FROM THE EFFORT OF OPENING THE FRIDGE DOOR I THINK I WOULD HAVE COTTONED ON.

Anyway, I feel like it's always this with doctors and other traditional medical office staff. I'm sure they're under a lot of pressure in this messed-up USA healthcare system. But I haven't walked out of a doctor's office feeling OK about the how the appointment went in a long time. At best, I feel like I wasted someone's time: mine, theirs, etc. At worst, I have literally had suicidal feelings get re-triggered after a doctor appointment gone very wrong.

It doesn't have to be this way!!! I'm able to choose a dentist who is kind and understanding, someone who wants me to be able to make educated decisions about my oral health. I'm able to go to a small, independent optometrist who treats my knowledge and understanding of my own health and medical history with respect. But when it comes to medicine, I have a choice between local oligopoly #1 or local oligopoly #2 for my care, and that sucks.

Last but certainly not least for the main AU kids' fashion boards, we have the one for Aurora~! :D Her style was another one that was kind of difficult to figure out, mainly in that I wasn't sure whether to make her style more simple and academia-like, or a little fancier since her mom is Stella. I think I came up with a good balance between the two for her though, and I hope you enjoy!

. For Aurora, she has straight and dirty blonde hair that reaches just past her armpits, which she usually wears down or in simple styles, like braids or ponytails. She doesn't mind wearing makeup but usually only goes for full looks for royal events, with her everyday look mainly consisting of mascara, lip-gloss, and natural color eyeshadow if she chooses to wear it, but does go a little fancier with her nails. She has a couple of moles scattered across her body like her mom, but gets freckles only lightly during the summertime. For a physical detail I wanted to highlight, it would be that she has a need for glasses, with her main pair being white.

. For her color scheme, she sticks mainly with warm tones and neutrals, with yellows/golds and oranges being her favorite. Her fashion style leans more into an academic and studious style, but with a little more of 'stylish' flair and she likes to layer. Turtleneck sweaters, sweaters in general, chinos and dress pants, short dresses to layer over her shirts, fancy jumpsuits or rompers when going for a more 'cute' and fun look, and overalls. Usually wears solid colors, but doesn't mind plaid and some celestial motifs, and she does own a few fun-patterned dress shirts.

. For accessories, she does own many given she's Stella's daughter and a princess, but she usually wears them lightly on a daily basis. She does have her ears pierced, wearing mainly either diamond studs or gold mini hoops, but does have a few dangly crystal pairs she sometimes wears. Has a couple of gold bracelets and chain belts to cinch in some of her outfits, and owns a pretty fancy gold smartwatch that she wears almost all of the time. The main accessory I chose to give her here is some layered gold necklaces, all with a celestial motif to show pride in her Solarian heritage.

Are we slowly becoming a "cyborg world"? As humans, we are becoming more and more of a "cyborg world" than ever before, implementing different forms of technology every day, from everyday tasks to big things like carrying out jobs beyond the human capacity. In Haraway's "Cyborg Manifesto" article, they mention their take on the shift, stating that "a cyborg world might be about lived social and bodily realities in which people are not afraid of their joint kinship with animals and machines" which summarizes the fact that we are becoming more and more accepting of technology being apart of our lives, which essentially blurs the line between human and machine (356). Small devices like wearable technology, for example, smartwatches and even glasses modified with technology, are used in our lives constantly with simple tasks like knowing the time, checking the weather, and answering phone calls; a phone, but at a smaller scale. In another way, the introduction to artificial intelligence has also shaped our world, in which it has become our assistants like finding alternatives to a specific recipe or helping us solve a question that we can not find the answer to; yet, it has also began to influence the way we think and create decisions, sometimes with us relying more and more on its assistance to think in place of us. A "cyborg world" does have its benefits, but it also has its downsides, which if not taken seriously now, it can have serious impacts for how we as humans will continue to carry out our lives.

How is the role of being "female" manipulated within a male-dominated world? In one way, the role of being "female" has been tied to a specific role, often being seen and pushed by the thoughts of men, through females being seen as the "parental" figure; a mother. Riordan highlights the many aspects of being female and femininity within the world, digitally and realistically, and one thing he highlights is the role of "mother" being tied to being female. To many male figures, women are either sexualized or just seen as the maternal figure for their "kind" nature; there is rarely an in-between role, where women are sexualized for their bodies (having big enough boobs, pretty face, being thin but not too thin, etc.) and having a "tamer" role within society mainly due to the bias that women can not do the same things as men. For as long as history has been recorded, most cultures saw women as insignificant, only being the "caretaker" and "babymaker" as that was what they were only allowed to do and be capable of. Even now as a more modernized society, the role of "female" is still controlled by men, for men continue to hold power of women despite the freedom given to women to choose what they want to do.

Can the video-game industry avoid exploiting the role of "female"? For the most part, I highly doubt that the industry can move away from being overly obsessive in using the role of "female" for their benefit. This ties in with the previous question, in which being female and the role within society is more presented and manipulated based on what the male population wants it to be. Riordan mentions the role of women in the video-game world as "having no penis (lack)… having breasts (excess)… Victorian aesthetic of tiny waists and large breasts" where women are sexualized more often than not, which shows the reality that even in a modern world, men and their "desires" are still prioritized than being true to realism and even having respect to the identity of what being a female is (248). With the author, they see the problem rooting from the overall dominance men have in the software engineeering and programming fields and the lack of women in these fields, emphasizing that so long as men hold power and domination in these fields, women will continue to be overly sexualized for their bodies, catering to their audience of men. Furthermore, the exploitation of the "female" role also allows more revenue to both the games and companies behind the creation(s) of female models; when there are more female models, often being "revealing" in some form with their design, the amount of players and even money spent on the game increases significantly as it caters to what their "target population" wants. If companies can get the most money out of this decision, then they will continue to use this tactic to both dominate the video-game industry and over their competitors, even if it means having to "sacrifice" certain aspects (overall player population, game mechanics, etc.). There can be some efforts in avoiding this if these companies are willing to change, but often it is futile.

Why is Mavis Beacon so significant even though she is just a fictional character for a typing game? Mavis Beacon is a fictional character from a popular typing software, in which it taught many American children how to type on a computer efficiently through the use of practice and the ways of using a keyboard. Even though she was never a real person, aside from the creators using a real woman as the "model", she impacted millions as well as how society played out as she was the first black woman not only in the digital world as an assistant, but as well as one of the first significant black women models. Her original model was based on Renee L'Esperance, who was a Haitian-born woman and scouted during her work as a department saleswoman. Although Renee L'Esperance modelled for the creators and helped shape millions of users on the use of the keyboard, she did not actually consent for her image to be used in their product, only for a photoshoot for a magazine page. The creators of the type software not only exploited Renee, but they went against her rights, which caused her a lot of distress in her overall identity. For many, they are entitled to the "right to be forgotten", where essentially they are legally obligated to have their identity erased online, however, she was denied that right. Renee's role as a woman in the digital space was manipulated by men, both in the digital world and in real life, which adds more evidence that although women now have more rights than ever before in history, men will continue, if not, will always hold power as to how the "female" role is used and portrayed.

I feel like she'd just have good genetics, so skincare(expensive or otherwise) is usually gifted to her but she rarely uses them (on the other hand, she could be like those celebrity Vogue videos where they slather on every expensive cream known to mankind so either or lmao)

She's a jewelry girlie, and she accessorizes on the daily using rings that could range anywhere from minimalistic for school, like thin gold or silver bands. For when she follows her dad to business meetings, she would wear discreet name brand ones, and maybe her earrings would be a flashy brand to signal everything else she's wearing is of the same caliber.

I think she would prefer practical jewelry that she can wear into the water, but also, she would be the type to methodically arrange, take-off, and clean the jewelry she wore that day.

Specific gemstones she likes would probably be rubies, sapphires(pink and blue), diamonds, and she enjoys gold as the main material for her jewelry over all else.

Make-up is probably less is more for Athy, she doesn't need it and she knows that, but during school she'll wear minimalistic eye-liner to create more depth and choosing between the shades of pink gloss for her lips would give her lots of joy.

Hair accessories would be anywhere from pastel hair ties with little charms dangling at the ends if she has her hair up in a ponytail/pigtails or simple, black velvet ribbons woven through her hair if she has braids or with a pop of color here and there using flowers and mini gold clips if her hair is flowing free down her back.

Fashion-wise, per my last post, I believe she'd be old-money during formal occasions(let's think black skirts, white/navy tops, dark tights and slingback kitten heels, a gold, pearl strand watch and simple studs in her ears), vs school(usually sneakers, pleated skirts of a variety of colors, a bracelet band smartwatch, lowkey jewelry) or going out (jeans/skirts, boots or sneakers, a leather band watch, flowy tops.)
