Bright Like You | Saeran Choi

Saeran likes to rise with the sun.

He’s always awake by the time morning illuminates your bedroom in golden hues. He kisses you softly and whispers lullabies against your hair before he leaves the warmth of the bed you share.

It never takes very long for you to follow after him, two cups of tea in hand (with extra honey, because he likes his sugary sweet) and his favorite blanket wrapped around you. You always find him in the garden, his hands deep in the soil and humming with the birds.

It’s a strange thing today, to find that you’ve woken before him.

He’s completely burrowed himself under the blankets, only the pink tips of his hair visible. You don’t want to wake him, because he’s beautiful like this – peaceful and light.

So gently, you slip from his grip and tip-toe out into the hallway, quietly closing the door behind you.

You haven’t been in the kitchen for very long, perched on the counter drinking tea, when suddenly, there’s a thunderous crash from somewhere in the bunker. It startles you so badly you almost drop the mug in your hand.

Your body is going into a panic, preparing to start tearing down walls to make sure the twins are okay. But there’s a quick movement in your peripheral and two bare feet rush into the kitchen.

Saeran stands in the entryway, balancing himself on the wall and gasping for air. You fight the urge to run and take him in your arms, because you know instantly there’s something very wrong. His sweater is half-on and there’s a desperate, crazed look in his eyes that you haven’t seen in a very long time –

Cautiously, you place your mug next to you and reach forward.

“Saeran, come here” you say, with as much tenderness as you can – because he’s terrified, and so are you, but you need to find a way to calm him.

And you’re feeling jostled, because for a second, you are sure you saw a little bit of Ray –

He gives a nod then and walks towards you, hurried and unbalanced, placing himself between your knees. His whole body is shaking and the sky feels like it’s falling around you because it’s been so long since you’ve seen him this lost.

You lightly sweep his bangs away from his face before placing your palm on his cheek. Closing his eyes, he instantly leans into it, always starved for your affection. 

A sob escapes him then, rattling his whole body, and he wraps his arms around your waist and buries his face into the crook of your neck, his body releasing into yours tiredly.

“I woke up and you were gone,” he explains, his grip on you tightening – afraid of letting go, afraid of what would happen if he did. “I panicked. I’m sorry, so, so sorry.”

Gently, you push him back, and cradle his face between your hands, wiping the tears from his pretty face. There is hesitancy in his eyes, fear that he’s shown you too much, because he can’t protect you if he’s weak. 

You lean forward then, nose to nose and mouth to mouth, and you can’t get any closer, but you need to be. “Saeran, do you know that I love you?”

“Can you tell me, again?” he whispers against your mouth, and you can taste the saltiness of his tears. But his voice has lost that terrible urgency, and you know that’s he's come back to himself, back to you. 

“When I met you, I was just as much in need of saving,” you say honestly, already beginning to choke up because it’s never easy to speak about one’s darkness. But he needs to hear this more than you need to deny who you used to be. “I was so alone. I used to wish upon the stars every night, praying that they would offer me just a little bit of their light.”

He says nothing, simply gazes at you in wonder, flushed cheeks and top lip quivering. His hands are grabbing fistfuls of your shirt, anxiously looking for something to ground himself with.

“They listened,” you continue, noticing his eyes are clearing. “They gave me something brighter, they gave me you.”

His own hands, scarred but soft and healing, reach up and gently cup your own face – wiping away the tears that have gathered there.

“You are precious to me, Saeran. You understand that, right?”

“Yes, I do,” he says, his words quiet and meant just for you. His soft breath against your lips sends a shiver up your spine. “Before you loved me, I used to wish upon them too.”

And there in the kitchen, with your arms wrapped around each other and bathed in the soft light of dawn, you hear the birds sing.

I’ve never posted a fanfic before so hopefully it’s good ^^; Happy birthday to our beloved twins!! T-T

MAJOR SPOILERS for Ray’s After Ending!

Saeran could finally go home.

Due to the severity of his injuries, the hospital made him stay for a few days even after he had woken up. You and Saeyoung spent the entirety of his stay there by his bedside, as if you looked away for even a second, he would disappear. At last, Saeran was discharged, and Saeyoung took you both home.

You and Saeyoung helped Saeran onto the couch where he could lay comfortably. He still needed plenty of bed rest.

Saeyoung had to leave, but not before triple checking you would keep him updated. The twins exchanged a slightly awkward but warm goodbye, and he was gone.

“There!” You chirped. You fluffed Saeran’s pillow, pulled a blanket over him, and gently patted his head.

Something about his warm chuckle...and the sweet smile that graced his face...and the realization that Saeran was finally home, finally safe, finally free...

It made you break down in tears.

You sank to the floor, your face buried in your hands. The weight of everything that had happened crashed around you as the dam in your head finally crumbled. Ray’s self-hatred and Saeran’s anger and escaping Mint Eye and drugged Saeyoung and the chain on Saeran’s ankle and Saeran half-dead by the lake and everything flashed through your head in quick succession, a horrific slideshow of the last month’s darkest moments.

Saeran’s goodbye. His sacrifice. All those times he told you to be happy without him... at the time, you stubbornly told him, no, I’m coming back for you, and you kept that promise. But what if...you were too late...? Saeran’s head in your lap, his beaten body, his fading eyes...

You partially tuned back into the world, awakened by the need to see that Saeran was really there, that it wasn’t a dream. You could hear his voice, though you couldn’t process his words. You dropped your hands and saw his face, painted with desperate worry. He cupped your face in his hands and wiped your tears, and finally you could understand what he was saying.

“...My love?...My love, please don’t cry. Tell me what’s wrong.”

“Saeran...” your fingers gripped his hands. Then the words poured out of you, like you had been waiting to say them all this time. “Please don’t ever do that again. Don’t try to sacrifice yourself ever again. I can’t—I don’t want to...” your chest heaved with sobbing gasps despite your best efforts. “I need you. I need you, do you understand? Everyone says I’m so strong, but I’m not, I’m not—”

In one swift movement, Saeran pulled your head tightly to his chest, and you collapsed into his embrace. He pet your hair and kissed the top of your head over and over. His breath grazed you gently and you knew he was crying, too. “I’m so sorry. We all relied on you so much...you’ve been so strong. Thank you so much, for everything...”

He held you tighter, and the pain melted into overwhelming relief. If you could hold him like this for eternity, you would...

“Please...stay with me forever...stay forever here with me...” you whispered into his chest, a wish upon a star.

The star answered. “I’m not going anywhere. I promise.” His resolution pierced the air. You were fully awake.

It's five in the afternoon when you gently shake Saeran awake. He hugs his pillow tighter but after you softly call his name, he opens his beautiful teal eyes. You whisper he should get some food and he blinks, doing his best to process your words. Confused, he turns to the nightstand and looks at the alarm clock. A frustrated groan escapes with lips.

"I'm so sorry," he mutters, burying his face into the pillow. "Didn't mean to sleep this long."

"If you need to rest, then do so," you smile, stroking his arm affectionately. "How about you take a shower while I get you something?"

Twenty minutes later, Saeran is sitting on the dining table with damp hair, a plate of hot food in front of him. Grabbing his fork, he takes a small bite, his throat hurting a little as he swallows. It’s a small portion and he thanks you silently because once he’s done, he feels full. A few moments after he has finished his plate, you set your eyes on him from your spot across the table.

“Can I help you dry your hair?” you offer. Saeran nods.

After a quick trip to your shared bedroom, you come back with a fresh towel and start drying his hair carefully. You’ve always liked taking care of him but this is one of your favourite activities. Not only does his hair ends up adorably fluffy, but you also love when Saeran leans his head into your heads, completely relaxed.

You start with the back of his hair, humming contently as you softly rub the towel against his scalp. Covering your fingers with the fabric, you massage behind his ears, one of his favourite places.

“I really am sorry,” Saeran whispers.

“What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean,” he sighs. “Waking up at five in the afternoon. Barely speaking. Spending most of my time… here,” he says, gesturing at his head.

“It’s alright,” you shrug, drying the top of his hair. At this, Saeran turns in his seat and looks at you, his eyes filled with tears.

“You know it’s not alright. I don’t know if it’s winter and its stupid grey sky or my dumb head messing with me for no reason, I just… don’t know why it’s getting bad again. And I don’t know how… how you could still love me.”

At his words, you leave the towel on the table beside him, and sink to your knees, your hands resting on top of his thighs, thumbs drawing soothing patterns.

“I’ve loved you in your bright, sunny days with flowers on our hair and grass under our feet. And I’ll continue to love you even in the dark, in the middle of the worst thunderstorm we’ve ever seen. Nothing can make me love you any less,” you softly say. Saeran’s cheeks turn pink and you take his hands. “We’ll get through this rough patch just the way we’ve always done.”

He tilts his head to the side, confused. You smile and press a kiss on his knuckles.

“Together.”

Short one cause I almost forgot! I might add more to this one at a later date, we'll see.

The twins sat. In front of them there were two keyboards, both men could use left and right hands on two separate keyboards, but how did their father know that? Saeyoung glanced at his brother, but Saeran stared at the monitor in front of him.

“Go ahead and wake up the computers.” Bak said. He stood behind them and Saeyoung felt an uncontrollable urge to tear his throat out. Saeran immediately swept his hands over both keyboards, the monitors in front of him woke from sleep mode, several tabs already open. Saeyoung followed suit, noting that they had access to the outside world. That was good. Though he was sure his father was smart enough to keep tabs on where the twins went. But if he needed them this badly, then whoever was watching what they did, wasn’t as skilled as the twins. He would bide his time.

“Now, what I need from you boys is information on the daughter. The only thing my men could come up with was a name and a birth certificate. Clearly she is a bastard, and the speaker of the national assembly is trying to keep her a secret.” Saeyoung rolled his eyes at the irony of that sentence. “It isn’t enough to expose the girl, he’s too well liked. I need more, and my instincts tell me the girl is the key. My instincts have never steered me wrong.”

“Except when you took up with out mother.” Saeran said, a sneer on his face. He turned to glare at his father, the intensity on his face made the Prime Minister take a step back before regaining his composure. He swallowed, shaking his head, looking into those green eyes felt like looking at a different man than the one who had opened the door. Of course, that was ridiculous.

“I doubt any of us would care to discuss your mother.” Bak growled, angrier that he had been made to lose his composure. “Find the girl, and the secret Hye is hiding. One of my men will stay in the room with you, others are posted outside the door and throughout the installation. Security is aware of you and are constantly watching.” He pointed to the ceiling in several areas where cameras were placed.

“What happens once we find your information?” Saeyoung asked.

“You’re pack is safe.” Bak answered.

“And us?”

“Well, now that I have you, it would be very difficult to let you go of such a resource.” He laughed as he walked out the door. A tall man entered and stood behind them. The answer didn’t surprise him. It was a logical conclusion. There were only two options for his father, kill them, or use them.

Every night, you lay awake in the dark and watch the shadows dance across the ceiling. 

You can’t be sure when you carved out this pattern for yourself, but it feels unending. The fear and the grief have already chosen to make their home in the very marrow of your bones.

When will this end, you wonder? Will morning ever come?

All through the night, your mind spins and spins with unanswered questions about friendship and lies and betrayal – haunted by memories of a terrifying castle where you lived years of torment within a single night.

Because you remember all of it.

The gunshot, the body hitting the ground, the blood pooling around lifeless mint eyes.

You hear Vanderwood’s voice, feel his grip on your arm, stumbling and just as frightened as you. “Don’t look.”

And that’s when the screaming starts.

Your body jerks suddenly, and you’re watching the shadows flickering on the ceiling again.

Saeyoung is completely unbothered and still breathing deeply as he sleeps next to you, his long limbs wrapped around yours (as they always are). He used to be such a light sleeper, always balancing on the in-between tightrope of sleep and awake. And though you still find him spinning around in his office chair at odd hours of the night sometimes, you take this peacefulness as a sign that he’s healing.

You don’t want to wake him, but you can still hear the screams in your head and you need to know that he’s here and alive – dreaming happily about floating around in space with the moon and taking rides on shooting stars.

Slowly, you turn over fully and softly brush the messy red curls away from his pretty face. Even in the dark he is radiant, made up of golden stardust and hope, and blinding light – and you love him, you love him, you love him.

Without thinking, you lean forward and softly press your lips against his. It’s a quick thing, but already, you see his long lashes fluttering.

“Hmm?” he mumbles, trying to rub the sleep off his eyes. There is a bit of drool right on the corner of his mouth, and you adore this sort of dizziness about him, all bleary eyed and confused as he searches for you.

“Shhh, darling.” You laugh quietly at the way he instantly settles at the sound of your voice. It makes your heart ache, because this sweet boy has placed the entirety of his trust in you and it feels like something precious. “I love you.”

“I love you too, kitten,” he whispers sleepily and surprises you because you thought he was sleeping again. He turns then and wraps his arm around your middle, pulling you in even closer. The warmth of his body soothes you instantly, vanishing the dark fog of doubt clouding your mind. “Stop staring at me and go to sleep.”

And as you smile and lay your head on his shoulder, nose pressed right against the curve of his neck, you make a silent promise – because you are his and he is yours, and you don’t need to wait for morning to come, not when you have him.

I will be your light, and you will be mine. We will create starlight together, and we will love and dream and dance beneath it, always.

About Us:

While I sometimes talk about us referring to the future (like when I gave the date our son was born), I also tend to refer to us in real time. Meaning, for example, if it’s currently July 7th, 2021 irl, then I am talking about us on that day too (only married for 2 months in that case). Everything below is what happened in my canon (I try to stay as close to canon as possible).

We met when I was in S.K. studying abroad and was dragged into the RFA by a mysterious hacking incident. After being in the RFA for a couple weeks, the events of his route begin to happen. Fast forward a few months later and we get engaged, and within a year, married!

After I graduated college, we moved to the U.S.A. (bringing his brother with him) as it would be safer from his dad who is still in power. There, he continues working on electronic things to continue making some money, and I begin a job at [tbu]

& we have children! A boy named Hwanyoung Nathaniel Choi*, twin girls named Eliana Sunhui & Anastasia Sunjin Choi*, Florencio Byeol Choi*, and Seonlyang Theodora Choi*.
