📰 Cine 21: [WHO ARE YOU] The Intimate Traitor Kim Jeongjin

From Yang Cheolhong in Boyhood Era, to Choi Youngmin in Doubt, and Eom Daegeun in A Virtuous Business, actor Kim Jeongjin has worked diligently and prolifically to connect with audiences this year. He was ranked second in the Cine21 "2024 Year-End Film Review" list of Best New Male Actors. The panel noted that ���despite being a rookie, Kim Jeongjin showcased a wide acting spectrum” (Park Hyunjoo) and “delivered gravitas to every role he played, even though the three films he appeared in this year had vastly different genres and tones” (Bokgil).

During the audition for Doubt, Kim Jeongjin read scripts for four episodes in just over an hour—about 15 minutes per episode. While it wasn’t enough time to fully understand Youngmin, he dove deep into the character with sharp imagination. Right there on the spot, director Song Yeonhwa told him they wanted to work together on the project.

“When I intuitively looked at Youngmin, I noticed two key points. First, he longs to fill the love he didn’t receive from his mother with someone else. Second, while he appears direct and superficial, there’s much more beneath the surface. Capturing the multidimensionality of Youngmin seemed like an important mission. After the audition, I met with Director Song every week to develop Youngmin’s tone. Adding their direction allowed me to better understand the complexity of Youngmin’s emotions. I realized that I shouldn’t view Youngmin solely as a suspenseful character or get too immersed in his functional role within the story. Instead, I chose to focus on his deficiencies.”

In the interrogation scene where Jang Taesoo (played by Han Seokyu) questions Choi Youngmin and brings up his sensitive relationship with his parents, Kim Jeongjin, consumed by anger, unknowingly shed tears. Although the scene didn’t make it into the final cut, it was a valuable experience for Kim, who felt he had fully immersed himself in the character’s life.

“At the time, the director told me that living as Choi Youngmin would be a rare and precious experience. It truly was. When the emotions I felt as an actor clashed with what I needed to accomplish as a character, it created a moment that couldn’t be experienced in any other dimension. That’s how my version of Youngmin was born.”

In Doubt, when Choi Youngmin refuses to back down easily during his psychological battle with Jang Taesoo, Kim Jeongjin’s full potential as an actor shines through. Not even a veteran profiler with a penetrating gaze, nor an iconic, nationally beloved actor like Han Seokyu, could intimidate him.

“I leaned heavily on Han Seokyu sunbae during filming. The truth is, you can’t do well every single day. Some days, things don’t go as planned, while other days, everything flows better than expected. On a particularly tough day when I was tormented by regret and self-doubt, Han sunbae said to me, ‘If you assume you’ll be doing this job for 30 years, can you really judge everything based on just today?’ That was incredibly comforting. It reminded me how important it is to maintain a steady mindset and attitude, unaffected by daily ups and downs.”

Kim Jeongjin had already begun establishing a specific image in the eyes of audiences: the leader of the troublemaking boys from Buyeo Agricultural High School in Boyhood Era and the commanding, ominous Choi Youngmin in The Intimate Traitor. At this point, the public might have started to expect a certain consistency from him. But he quickly shattered those expectations with Eom Daegeun in A Virtuous Business —a clumsy yet earnest young man, the lovable rascal of Wonbong Pharmacy, who absorbs both the affection and frustration of his family.

Having just completed the formation of his own prism as an actor, Kim Jeongjin is now prepared to project his unique perspective and understanding onto any role. His ability to be both deliberate and whimsical proves his readiness.

What are his thoughts as he closes a year full of hard work? When asked if the family dynamics changed at home after his successful year in film, Kim Jeongjin laughed humbly and replied, “They just asked… how much I’m earning these days? A question only family can ask!” (Laughs)

Senin pagi, Choi Junho memaksakan dirinya dengan berangkat ke sekolah, walau tubuhnya masih dalam kondisi lemah. Apalagi, nyeri di perutnya tak kunjung reda dan demamnya juga belum turun.

"Aku kan... udah minum obat dari Narae... harusnya besok sembuh, kan?" ia berkali-kali berkata begitu, lalu berangkat menuju sekolah.

Namun tetap saja, di sekolah, ia tak bisa fokus.

"Juju, kamu masih sakit? Wajahmu pucat banget..." tanya Narae yang kebetulan duduk di depannya, saat Junho memasuki kelasnya.

"Nggak, nggak papa. Udah mendingan setelah minum obat dari kamu," jawab Junho lirih, sambil duduk di kursinya sendiri.

Jam pelajaran pun berlangsung. Namun Junho tak bisa berkonsentrasi pada pelajarannyaml.

"최준호, 괜찮아?" tanya sang guru.

"Nde... gwaenchana..." Junho membalas lirih, walau wajahnya sudah semakin pucat dan peluh membanjiri tubuhnya. Nyeri di perutnya pun semakin menjadi.

Hal pertama yang Junho lihat saat membuka mata adalah pemandangan langit-langit berwarna putih. Jelas, bukan langit-langit kamarnya di dorm. Langit-langit di UKS sekolahnya pun tidak seperti ini.

"Aku..." Junho bergumam, sambil mencoba menghimpun kesadaranya.

"Kau sudah sadar, Junho-ya?"

Sebuah suara, yang tak asing, membuatnya berpaling ke sisi kanan. Dan betapa terkejutnya ia, melihat sosok yang sangat dikenalnya duduk di tepi ranjangnya.

"APPA!!!"

"Kenapa kau takut begitu?" tanya Tuan Choi, sambil berusaha menahan tawanya melihat tingkah putra satu-satunya itu.

"Appa... kenapa ada disini? Ini... Seoul, kan?"

Sang ayah mengagguk, "benar, di rumah sakit Seoul. Appa ditelepon pihak sekolah, mereka mengabari kalau kau pingsan di kelas dan dilarikan ke rumah sakit."

"Jadi begitu... tapi kenapa Appa?"

"Kenapa? Kau berharap Hyunjoo yang datang kesini?"

Junho hanya terdiam.

"Appa tak ingin merepotkannya. Dia kan masih mahasiswi tingkat akhir. Biarlah dia mengurus tugas akhirnya dulu, dan menjaga Jihye. Biar Appa yang ke Seoul untuk mengurusmu sementara."

"Sementara?" tanya Junho sambil menelengkan kepalanya. "Appa nggak kerja? Lalu, apa aku harus dirawat lama?"

"Appa tidak yakin. Lebih baik membiarkan dokter yang memeriksamu."

Junho pun mengangguk, lalu memegang perutnya, "Appa... perutku sakit..."

Sang ayah buru-buru keluar ruangan, dan segera memanggil dokter.

Seorang dokter pun datang bersama beberapa perawat, dan mulai menanyai Junho macam-macam tentang apa yang sang idola rasakan. Junho menjawab dengan jujur, bahwa saat jumat ia terserang diare, lalu demam tinggi di hari sabtu dan minggu, disertai dengan nyeri perut luar biasa.

Dokter pun menyarankan Junho untuk tes darah dan biopsi, guna pemeriksaan lebih lanjut. Dan setelah beberapa saat, hasil tes pun keluar.

"Choi Junho-ssi, Anda terkena radang usus. Untuk sementara, Anda harus dirawat inap di rumah sakit," sang dokter membacakan hasil tes Junho.

"Ditambah Anda juga terkena anemia dan dehidrasi ringan...."

Junho tak mampu mendengar ucapan sang dokter. Ia terbaring lemas, sambil melamun menatap langit-langit rumah sakit.

I would still like to know April's side of the Story

For two years, I believed Seungri is as much responsible for the 'Burning Sun' scandal as Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon. Then,suddenly he was 'innocent' and 'falsely accused'. People called Woojin as 'Woojail' after certain allegations with evidences popped out. Then again, these accusations were false and he was being framed. So forgive me but I'm not taking any 'accusation' or 'scandal' or 'bullying' on face value just from a single side of story.

The reason I believed Jimin's one was because nobody actually came forward to defend her. She herself tried to weakly deny but couldn't get away with it. But you wouldn't have known or noticed anything if Mina never came out with it. It was after her revelation that certain videos titled 'Proof that Jimin is a bully' came out.

The whole Jessica Jung-Girls'Generation situation is still controversial to me. People like to deny it by simply saying "SM kicked her out" but Jessica's first statement after getting kicked out was actually "My members kicked me out" and then never opened up about it. If the members voted her out, they aren't innocent. Even after spending 14 years together as trainees+members,if some of the girls felt tempted to vote her out then Jessica wasn't innocent either. The way the girls always like to behave they're OT8 like Sica never existed or is a distant memory seems quite shady.

Back to the original topic,the original lineup consisting of Somin of Kard and Lee Hyunjoo,we've seen numerous video clips where it's painfully obvious that they're boycotting Hyunjoo. I have several questions here:

In bullying, there's usually a prime bully with spectators who do nothing. Why would an entire group pick on a particular member for apparently no reason at all?

If the group bullying was true, why would they still make it painfully obvious on camera? Weren't they concerned of their image? Even Jimin kept her apathy subtle on camera.

People easily believe it when someone is exposed as a 'bully' but do not pay attention that there are people out there with 'damsel in distress' and 'victim' syndrome who like to turn around every situation in a way that makes them look like they are a victim. I shouldn't be accusing Hyunjoo like that without knowing the truth but I can't rule out that possibility either.

Referring to the previous point, if there are clips showing how the April members were mean to Hyunjoo, then there is a KBS The Unit clip where Hyunjoo tried to show that a certain contestant was scary because her body language was a bit bolder and it surprised her by overreacting. She was criticized in the comments for that.

Mina had an outburst because of the 'father's death' issue and that's how we got to know how Jimin behaved with her years ago. Why did Hyunjoo's brother come up with this issue after all this time? When Hyunjoo is long gone from April?

An irresponsible company like DSP Media was really fast to deny the bullying rumours on April. But it can be argued that they did it to save their own skin since both KARD and April shall be affected if they did nothing about this.

Lastly, what if this is like the T-Ara situation where the group was boycotted based on some social media updates for years until it was exposed that the truth was something else?

Public opinion can easily be swinged from one side to another by making up a video or posting message screenshots. I'm simply trying to play the devil's advocate here and bringing out my doubts. If any bullying victim comes across my post and think I'm trying to undermine bullying and gaslighting, then I sincerely apologize as that's totally not my intention. And I'm not ruling out the probability that my doubts can be wrong.

She expressed feeling liberated by her first experience with swearing in acting and gratitude towards director Yeon Sangho for bringing out a newness in her that she herself had not discovered. She also showed deep trust for Park Heesoon, with whom she has worked on two consecutive projects.

Released last month, the Netflix series "The Bequeathed" is a story that unfolds with eerie incidents and secrets revealed following the inheritance of a forgotten ancestral land after the death of a distant uncle. The project was planned and scripted by Yeon Sangho, known for "Train to Busan" and "Hellbound," with director Min Hongnam, who was the assistant director for "Train to Busan," "Psychokinesis," and "Peninsula," taking on the direction and screenplay.

"The Bequeathed," planned with the intention of delving into the raw facets of Korean families through the theme of ancestral land, has completed a peculiar and somewhat eerie story focused on the desires of each character. The tension arising from the relationships between characters and the intrigue of uncovering the truth behind a murder case provide enough momentum to comfortably carry the series through to its sixth episode.

Do you look up audience reactions?

"I haven't looked them up myself, but people around me have informed me. I think the reaction is better than I expected. I tend not to enjoy watching my own work. I see flaws and shortcomings first, which makes it difficult for me to view my work objectively. It's been the same with other projects."

What were the disappointments and highlights of "The Bequeathed" for you?

"I didn't think of myself as the protagonist. There are aspects where the character should stand out and lead, but I didn't consider it deeply. I regret not having enough strength to carry the entire work. The highlight was that I usually suppress my emotions and keep my voice down in my acting. This time, I wanted to express my emotions honestly and realistically, and the viewers also found it refreshing and appreciated it. I felt exhilarated and enjoyed filming."

What motivated you to work with director Yeon Sang-ho again?

"While I was filming 'Jung_E,' the story of 'The Bequeathed' came up. He was preparing it and suggested I read it. I thought it was a character that would bring a change in my acting tone, and it had the fun of solving mysteries. At times, I wasn't sure if it was interesting, but then I became curious, and Yoon Seoha's emotions built up and eventually exploded."

Why do you think you were cast in this project?

"I wonder about that myself, but I sincerely appreciate that he sees something in me that even I may not be aware of and entrusts me with the character. I want to try various roles, but if they're not offered, I can't do them. However, the director discovers aspects of me that even I doubt or am unaware of and entrusts me with the role. It makes the challenges and fears seem irrelevant on set. I think bringing out a new aspect of an actor is one of the greatest strengths a director can have. I'm grateful, but I still don't know exactly what he trusts in me. (laughs)"

You clarified that while you're not a muse for director Yeon Sangho, you've been described as his persona. What do you think about that?

"I don't think I inspire or contribute to the creation of his works. It seems more like I was nearby while he was preparing, my acting wasn't bad, and he wanted to work comfortably, so it naturally happened."

You mentioned being "cinematic colleagues." Does this mean you communicate well regarding work?

"It's something we understand without having to speak. When we talk about characters or the project, saying one thing can be as good as saying ten. We have that level of experience with each other. I think that's why he considers us colleagues. I debuted at a young age, and we're of similar ages, so there's a sense of having lived through similar times. I believe he supports me as an actor who has watched me for a long time. It's not just me; I hope many actors continue to show new sides of themselves and remain active for a long time."

What kind of conversations do you have with director Yeon Sangho?

"On set, we mostly talk about the work, but we don't meet up often personally. Our personal acquaintance isn't that deep. (laughs) We talk about old times and future plans. It's just a few close people sharing conversations."

It was your first time performing swearing in acting. How did that feel?

"It felt really good and new. I'm not someone who enjoys swearing normally. However, it turned out to be one of the ways to define the character. I wanted to try such acting, but I never had the right character for it before. I thought Yoon Seoha could be that character. In reality, we swear quite often, don't we? I wanted it to look realistic in that aspect. There was one line written in the script. The rest was improvised. People who are not good at expressing their feelings end up swearing. In that sense, I thought it matched Seoha well. From an acting standpoint, it was liberating. There were more, but some got edited out. Too much swearing isn't good, so I thought it was appropriate."

Is there a part of the Seoha character you could relate to?

"I can't express anger. I'm the type to go home and scream. But playing Seoha, I could bring it out. I think I had that in me too."

You worked consecutively with actor Park Heesoon, who was your husband in 'Trolley,' and now Park Sunghoon has become your husband in this series. Despite both characters being undesirable as husbands (laughs), I'm curious about the chemistry.

"...I thought it wouldn't be hard, but then I couldn't do my lines when shooting 'The Bequeathed.' I saw (Park Heesoon's) face and tears came out. I was still in 'Trolley,' seeing this person as my husband, and realised shooting like this was hard. I said I couldn't look at his face and caused several NGs. In 'Trolley,' he was a good memory and a husband who loved me. But in 'The Bequeathed,' Park Sunghoon's character was a seriously irksome husband who was none of that. I wondered how my character could choose such a man. Seoha probably never heard such things from those around her, never received or gave love. She probably married just wanting to have a family. The husband probably chased after her. Actor Park Sunghoon made a special appearance but played his part well. That's why I think there was synergy in the quarrel scenes."

What kind of actor is Park Heesoon?

"It's been a while since we met, but 'Trolley'was our first work together. We knew each other well because we have a mutual friend. He's considerate, kind, and warm. I had a strong impression that he's a good person. His attitude on set is also something to learn from, always serious. He has presence. But he's not boring either."

Sekarang mumpung sedang senggang, Junho pun menghubungi kakak perempuannya di Busan. Sudah sebulan lebih ia tidak melihat wajah kakak serta adiknya, akibat persiapan debutnya.

"Nuna... Semoga dia tidak sibuk."

Lagipula, ada sesuatu yang harus ia bicarakan dengan sang kakak.

Setelah sambungan video call dianggkat oleh sang kakak, Junho langsung tersenyum cerah, melihat wajah kakaknya berada di layar ponselnya.

"NUNAAAA!!"

"Junho-ya, annyeong~ selamat atas debutnya tadi malam!"

Wajah kakaknya, lama tak dilihatnya terasa semakin cantik dan bercahaya. Ah, rasanya Junho ingin pulang ke Busan, dan mencium pipi sang kakak.

"Gomawo!! Apa Nuna menonton debutku semalam?"

"Tentu saja aku menontonnya. Oh, apa kau ingin melihat Jihye?"

"MAU!!"

Layar ponselnya pun langsung menampilkan adiknya, yang sepertinya sedang menggambar sesuatu.

"Jihye-ya, lihat, Oppa meneleponku!"

Choi Jihye, lantas mengalihkan pandangannya dari kertas menuju kamera. Pipi bulatnya membuat Junho ingin mencubitinya hingga bocah itu menangis.

"JIHYE-YAAAA!!!" Junho tak bisa menahan dirinya ketika melihat wajah sang adik. Andai, ia pulang ke Busan, pipi chubby itu sudah habis dicubiti oleh sang idola.

"Oppa? OPPA!!!" Jihye tak kalah antusias, ia pun berusaha merebut ponsel Hyunjoo—kakak perempuan Junho— untuk berbicara langsung dengan sang kakak.

"Oppa!!! Oppa semalam. Ada di. Tv!!!" beritahu Jihye dengan terbata, lantaran belum begitu lancar bicara.

"Benar!! Apa Jihye melihat Oppa? Oppa melihat Jihye lho!" gurau Junho.

"LIHAT!! LIHAT!! Jihye lihat. Belsama Eonni. Youngjae Oppa."

Sebentar, ada nama asing yang disebut oleh Jihye. Apa itu ada hubungannya dengan sesuatu yang ingin dipastikan Junho, ya?

"YOUNGJAE ITU SIAPA?!" tanya Junho. Sementara di layar, Hyunjoo hanya tertawa kecil.

"Dia... Pacarku..." jawab Hyunjoo malu-malu. Jihye pun kini berada di pangkuan kakak perempuannya.

"Aku bukan bermaksud untuk menyembunyikan darimu, Junho. Hanya saja, aku takut mengganggumu kalau aku menghubungi duluan..." tambah sang kakak. "Makanya, aku menunggu saat kau menghubungi kami duluan."

Junho pun membuka tabletnya, dan mencari postingan sang kakak yang menurutnya mencurigakan.

"Orang ini? Dia yang bernama Youngjae?" tanya Junho dengan nada seperti mengintrogasi. Entah kenapa, agak tidak rela kalau sang kakak punya pacar.

"Benar, dia," jawab Hyunjoo.

"Cih, jadi Nuna sukanya tipe jamet tho!"

"Dia nggak jamet, Junho-ya!! Appa sudah merestui hubunganku dengannya kok."

"HAH?! APPA?!" tanya Junho shock. Bisa-bisanya, keluarganya di Busan merestui kalau Hyunjoo punya pacar.

"Aku mengenalkannya pada Appa, dan Appa bilang dia anak yang baik. Jihye juga menyukainya. Dia membantuku menjaga Jihye, dan dia juga ikut mendukungmu sebagai idola."

"Tch, aku nggak butuh dukungannya," gerutu Junho, yang membuay Hyunjoo tertawa.

"Sejak kapan adik laki-laki ku jadi protektif begini ya," gurau Hyunjoo. "Saat Chuseok nanti, pulanglah ke Busan. Aku akan mempertemukanmu dengannya, dan kuyakin kau akan menyukainya."

Junho terdiam mendengar ucapan kakaknya. Apa ia bisa dapat libur hari raya saat sudah debut?

"Junho-ya? Ada apa?"

"Eh, nggak apa-apa Nuna. Nuna sejak kapan pacaran dengannya? Lalu, bagaimana Nuna mengenalnya?"

"Umm, dia senior dua— anni, satu tahun diatasku, kalau aku tidak cuti kuliah saat Eomma meninggal." Hyunjoo pun mulai bercerita.

"Dia bekerja paruh waktu di kafe tempatku biasa mengerjakan tugas. Awalnya kami hanya saling sapa, lama-lama saling mengobrol, lalu saling suka. Dan kami berpacaran, tepat satu bulan saat kau pergi ke Seoul."

"JADI NUNA SUDAH MENYUKAINYA SAAT AKU MASIH DI BUSAN?!"

Hyunjoo pun tertawa kecil. "Saat itu kami hanya dekat, Junho-ya. Sejak kau ke Seoul, aku agai kerepotan menjaga Jihye. Makanya ia sering datang ke rumah untuk membantuku, setelah kerja paruh waktunya selesai."

Junho pergi ke Seoul, tepat seminggu sebelum tahun ajaran baru dimulai. Artinya, minggu kedua di bulan maret. Dan... Sudah satu bulan lebih dong, kakaknya berpacaran.

"Padahal aku sekolah di Seoul agar Nuna tidak perlu repot menjagaku... Ternyata malah merepotkan ya menjaga Jihye seorang diri?"

"Bukan begitu, Junho-ya..." jemari Hyunjoo pun mengusap layar ponselnya, seolah sedang mengusap pipi sang adik.

"Aku mau kau mengejar impianmu menjadi penyanyi, Eomma juga pasti akan melakukan hal yang sama. Tapi Jihye, dia sedang aktif-aktifnya. Namun bukan berarti aku kerepotan menjaganya sendiri. Dan Youngjae pun membantu atas kemauannya sendiri, bukan aku yang memintanya," jelas Hyunjoo.

"Begitu ya?"

"Benar, seperti itu?"

"Appa masih sibuk bekerja?"

"Iya masih."

"Oh ya, akhir pekan lalu, Youngjae mengajakku dan Jihye jalan-jalan. Dan kau tahu? Orang-orang mengira kami adalah pasangan yang sudah menikah dan Jihye anak kami," cerita Hyunjoo.

Mendengar sang kakak bercerita seperti itu, tak ada alasan bagi Junho untuk overprotective lagi.

"Nuna... Nuna bahagia bersama Youngjae hyung?" tanya Junho.

"Tentu saja! Aku sangat bahagia, dan ingin sekali menikah dengannya."

"MENIKAH?!?!"

"Iya, aku ini wanita dewasa, Junho-ya. Tapi tidak dalam waktu dekat kok."

"Lalu kapan?"

"Mungkin saat umur Jihye 10 tahun? Sekitar 7 tahun lagi, saat ia sudah agak besar."

Junho terdiam. Lantas sesuatu pun terlintas di pikirannya.

"Nuna... Saat Nuna menikah nanti, aku ingin Nuna fokus pada keluarga baru Nuna. Mengurus suami dan anak. Lalu, aku akan mengambil alih untuk menjaga Jihye, dan tetap menjadi idola. 7 tahun nanti, uangku kan sudah banyak. Akan kugunakan untuk membiayai Jihye, jika Appa sudah pensiun. Aku janji."

"Hahaha, uri junho ternyata sudah besar, ya," komentar Hyunjoo. Bisa Junho lihat, sang kakak tengah menangis haru karena ucapannya barusan.

"Aku kan memang sudah 17 tahun."

"Benar. Junho-ya, semangat untuk dunia barumu ya! Kami di Busan, selalu mendukungmu!"

"Iya, aku selalu semangat!! Karena aku percaya, Eomma juga pasti mendukungku."

"Tentu saja. Kalau saat Chuseok bisa pulang, pulang ya?"

"Iyaa! Aku kabari nanti."

"Kutunggu lho. Oh, karena sudah hampir jam makan siang, aku akan menyiapkan makanan untuk Jihye dan Appa. Kau juga makan, Junho. Jangan makan makanan mini market terus! Minumlah vitamin!"

Junho hanya bisa tertawa kecil. Pasalnya, tadi ia membeli dua porsi makanan mini market. Satu sudah ia makan saat sarapan, satu akan ia makan saat makan siang.

"Sampai nanti, Nuna."

"Sampai nanti, Junho-ya."

Sambungan video call pun terputus.
