[X’s interview①] “Napoleon” B.A.P Daehyun(‘s) “First musical challenge, (I’m) doing it with my life on the line”

[Xports Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The first attempt is always scary, but is also more heart fluttering than any other times. Before starting, worries are always the first thing to come, but once you take it head on, you can feel exhilarated (from the experience). B.A.P member Daehyun, who has partaken in the challenge of musicals in the musical “Napoleon” – currently showing in Jamsil Charlotte Theater – and in charge of the role of Lucien, has said, “What (I) learn at every moment is different”.

“(I am) usually the type to break down while trying to control my mind, but this time (I) am doing it with my life on the line. (I) can feel that the field of musicals is a brutal place. (I) feel as if that the me that was in the field of gayo (tn, mainstream, stage music. “Gayo” music is usually described as pop music) music was but a baby in its mothers’ arms. You couldn’t imagine how nervous/anxious (I was). (I) can feel just how much I lack differently every day. But (I) am trying my best to be faithful to my position. (I am) trying to express a lot of the burning pain toward (my character, Lucien’s) brother, Napoleon.”

(The musical) “Napoleon” surrounds the ambition and love between Napoleon, who has led many wars to victory; Talleyrand, the politician that is trying to use him(Napoleon); and Josephine, who is both Napoleon’s significant other as well as the flower of socialization.

Daehyun is enthusiastically performing under the role of Napoleon’s younger brother, Lucien. (Lucien is) an important role that helps Napoleon, but in the latter half (of the musical) is arrested. (Daehyun) must have had a lot of burdens concerning the fact that his first challenge is an appearance in a large-scale (tn, masterpiece; well-known and loved) musical.

“Honestly, (I) didn’t have enough of a knowledge (about musicals) to feel burdened. Overall, (I) didn’t know anything about musicals. I wasn’t aware of how to lead (the show) on, how they(musicals) are progressed, or how many people watch it. It was a situation (where I) said that (I would) just do it (tn, without much further plans or ideas; vaguely) and (it was) a new challenge. Now, I have gotten used it and have become more comfortable, but there is still a lot more to show.”

(Daehyun is) acting out an unfortunate character in a grand epic of a character(person). Although there is not a lot of weight(tn, not a lot of parts) (in the role), a strong presence is left every time (he) appears. Because it is an important part, the nerves during the first show cannot be spoken by words.

“(The amount of) tension and anxiety (I felt) cannot be described by words. I was more nervous than when (I) debuted. When (I) debuted as a singer, (I) was really young and there was nothing (I) had built up or had, so all (I had to do) was show what was prepared. But when (I) debuted in a musical, there was more that (I) wanted to accomplish, so that resulted to having to take the challenge seriously. With that (in mind), (I) began to worry and (grow) nervous.”

In the role of Lucien, not only Daehyun, but also Baek Hyunghoon, Jin Taehwa, and BTOB’s Lee Changseob have been cast. With each portraying a different color, Daehyun is (said to be) portraying an innocent/pure Lucien.

“(I am acting so that) innocence is shown. (Lucien) is the personality to say that what is correct is correct, and what is wrong to be wrong. Lucien, who is 16, has a lot of emotions toward his brother(Napoleon). He is a both a younger brother who is innocent and an idiot, whose love toward his brother is very big, but regarding the field of politics cannot overlook (what he believes is wrong).

“(I) put down the methods (I) used to use to practice and practiced in a new method, but it is not a problem that can be solved in a short time, so it was very difficult and hard. (I am) upset that the stages (I performed) until now have not been perfect.”

The stereotypes against musical-dols (tn, idols that perform in musicals) is not a obstacle to him. Daehyun, who has fit in the first button of musicals (tn, taken the first step in the field of musicals) through “Napoleon”, says he feels himself slowly maturing.

“Those types of judgments (tn, the stereotypes) don’t really bother me. Since it’s obvious that (I) will be judged/evaluated. It was how it was until now and will be in the future as well, and (I) think that it will be hard for that type of judgment to disappear. (I) believe that if you do well, they(the audience) will have to accept it, so (I) don’t think too hard on it. While doing(performing) “Napoleon”, what (I) learn at every moment is different. Every day, (I) try something new. Although (I) lack a lot, because there is a lot that (I) learn and develop, (I) am happy.” (Continued in interview②)

[X’s interview②] “Napoleon” B.A.P Daehyun “The life expectancy of an idol is short… (I) worried a lot about the future”

[Xports Reporter Kim Hyunjung] (Continuing from interview①) B.A.P Daehyun (of a) 6 year old idol group, has said that standing on the stage as a singer and standing on the stage as an actor is completely different.

“There is nothing that is alike. (They, standing on stage as a singer as opposed to an actor,) are completely different. (For) musicals, everything is for the first time and new/unfamiliar. The play(actions) on stage itself is different and you have to do both singing and acting. Of course, on music programs, you also have to act, but not really, but it’s only a part of it. Here (in musicals), you not only have to sing and act, but MR also does not come out and you have to express something really raw, so there was a lot of burdens. Of course, there is also a lot that (I) earn. (I) was living in a small world, but the way (I) view the world has become wider. It(musicals) made me challenge more things. In the future, (I) will continue to do gayo (tn, trending, pop music) as well as musicals.”

(Daehyun), having gained courage after releasing (his) solo album, had decided to try out the musicals that he had always wanted to do. The piece that he had met then was “Napoleon”. (Daehyun,) in charge of the role of Lucien, is currently performing in Jamsil Charlotte Theater.

“Right before (I) did musicals, (I) promoted (my) solo album. At the same time, (I) started practicing for the musical. I (took up the) challenge (in musicals) because it was a time where I thought that “I am doing better than I think right now”. Becoming in (my) mid-twenties, (I) began thinking more and (I) wanted to solve it through musicals. The life expectancy of an idol is not long. The thoughts of the future were combined (in my worries) and there was a need to realize something new in the field of music.

“In the field of music, you have to pull out 100% of what you have. (I) am charmed by the emotions and acting, and enhancing the music. (I) always thought that (I) wanted to try it(musicals), but (I) was not prepared until then. Releasing a solo-album, (I) gained courage and decided to participate in a musical.”

Although (he) is a flashy idol star, there is no way one could not worry about the future at the same time. Daehyun is also the same. (He) is trying to broaden his possibilities through various activities.

“Before musicals, the only thing (I) could do was gayo music promotions, so (I) thought, if (I) continued on like this, what (I) could do. (I) only moved as a team/group and haven’t (before) shown anything personally (as myself). In the future, (I) will have to go to the military, and when these situations arrive, hard times are bound to come. So while enhancing myself continuously, a chance to release a solo album came and definitely gave me confidence. (I) took up the challenge (thinking) let’s try a musical at this timing.”

Although it is (his) first challenge, thanks to the advice and help from veteran actors, (he) harmonized with the show without trouble.

“Rather than (verbal) advices, the seniors matched (my) acting and guided (me) along. Before going on the stage, (they/the seniors) each said something (to me) and it was a lot of help. Recently, the last stage (I) did was really difficult. In terms of (my) condition (tn, how he was feeling physically, emotionally), (I) was exhausted to a point (I) couldn’t do anything, but (Han) Jisang hyung came over and said, “Daehyun, do whatever you want to do. Pour it all out” and it became a really big help. (Han Jisang) said, “Don’t hide what you have, and express it,” and it gave me much strength.”

As the youngest among the actors, (Daehyun) is getting love as the youngest.

“Because I came after doing something else, there were not a lot of people that come to me (first). To lower myself and learn a lot of things, (I) thought that I have to lower my body(myself) as much as possible. Now, everyone treasures and dotes on me.”

With BTOB’s Lee Changseob, rather than as a rival, (he) is more of a dependable figure. They share a common point of being a 6th year idol (group) member and performing (the role of) Lucien.

“(I am not on) the level of rivalry. (laugh) (Lee) Changseob hyung portrays the energy itself as it is. There wasn’t anyone that I knew, but as someone who I knew, I depended on him(Changseob) a lot. (Because Changseob) had already endured the difficulties performing on stage as an idol, he knew already my hardship. (Changseob) told me a lot about singing and acting. The hyungs (Baek Hyunghoon, Jin Taehwa, Lee Changseob) in charge of the part of Lucien gave (me) the most stimulations. (We) spent the most amount of time practicing together, and it is thanks to these brothers that (I) could stand on stage. Without them, to an extent that (I) wonder what would have happened without them, (they) gave me courage.”

(Daehyun) also did not forget the gratitude toward the fans that cheered on his first musical challenge. “I am thankful (for the fans) coming (to watch the performance) itself. (I) wondered how many people would come since it is (my) first musical, but a lot more people came than (I) thought. (I am) tying to greet the fans on the way home (after stage) even if (I am) tired.” (Continued in interview③)

[X’s interview③] “Napoleon” B.A.P Daehyun “The me that used to live in a small world, (my) outlook on the world has gotten wider”

[Xports Reporter Kim Hyunjung] (Continuing from interview②) B.A.P Daehyun, taking in a new challenge with the musical “Napoleon” has commented on partaking for the first time in a musical that “everything has changed.”

“(I am) happy that I could pour out without hiding. Even saying one thing in front of people is different. (My) personality is introverted, careful, and (I) don’t say much, but in terms of (my) personality as well, (I) have fixed a lot. (I have) also been influenced in vocalization and singing. Everything has changed.”

In charge of the role of Napoleon’s younger brother, Lucien, he(Daehyun) is currently performing hard. Although he(Lucien) plays a crucial role in helping Napoleon, in the latter half (of the musical), he(Lucien) is a character that gets arrested.

“(I) honestly did not know who Lucien was. (I) started only knowing the character of Napoleon. At first (I) did not know how even to study, but there is a lot that (I) came to learn from in between amazing seniors. (I) learned how to absorb (the information). (I was) a freshman no matter how you looked at it, but working alongside seniors, it felt as if (I) put on boosters.”

He(Daehyun) is the main vocal of the 6 year-old group B.A.P(Bang Yongguk, Himchan, Youngjae, Jongup, Zelo). Changing the singing style and much more in musicals, (Daehyun) is starting another challenge.

“To bring in something new in the part of singing, (I) worried a lot. (I) thought that this was something that would take a lot of time. It was hard to continuously change, but if (I’m) going to do it, might as well as do it properly. “Napoleon” changed everything that I thought. (I) was in a small world, but (the musical) widened (my) outlook on the world. It(the musical) made me challenge a lot more things.”

Humbly, (Daehyun) said that out of a 100 points, (he) wanted to give (himself) 30 points.

“(I am) the type to try to climb up higher than (I originally) thought, so even if (I) accomplish something, (I) don’t feel accomplished. When the performance ends, even if (I give myself) a lot, (I) think it would be only about 50 points. (I) have to do 20 shows, but of that (I) have already done approximately half. (My) goal is to earn 20 points in the time left. If (I) continue like this, (sometime) in my life, wouldn’t a 100 points (someday) come.

“(I) didn’t read the (audience) reviews on purpose. (I am) too scared. (laughs) It is the first time since (I) was born that (I) was this worried and uncertain. Honestly, (I am) not the type to worry about comments in the first place anyways. There have always been fierce uphills in life, so (I) think it had eventually fallen.”

(Daehyun) has said that he has learned to put down (his) greed through this musical.

“If you do music, there are a lot of ups and downs. For 5, 6 years, (I) have never once put down music, and (I) continued without resting. (I) needed relaxation, but before (I) could feel like (I) had accomplished something, (I) was already doing something else. (I) had a lot of greed in continuing on. As so, (I) fell in a sense of shame and (began) thinking a lot. Although with the title of professionalism on the line, it(his feelings of shame) showed directly on the stage, so the fans took that directly and felt it. At that time, (I) was young and (I) thought that I would do only just my thing and expressed all my exhaustion.

“Now, (my) thought has changed a lot. A lot of people are coming and paying a lot of money and using up their time, (I) thought that (I) could not do(perform) it with only the mind of a challenge. Through this musical (I) have learned a lot on how to put down (my) greed.”

As a member of B.A.P, a middle-aged (tn, a group who has gone through a lengthy period of time in the entertainment world and is considered now as a senior group) idol group, (Daehyun) has revealed his worries and hopes. Debuting in 2012, (B.A.P) has gained much love through songs such as “Crash” and “One Shot”. Although (they/B.A.P) have undergone trouble, such as the dispute with the label company, (they) have earned enough of a recognition abroad to proceed with a world tour.

“Compared to before (I) think my (goals) have become hazy. Considering as an idol, (I am now) a middle-aged singer, (I have to think about) the military and there are parts where (I) have to worry about the future. It felt like a pause, but for the members, as well as me, there was no such thing as doing things halfway. It’s been the same since debut. The goal can’t be achieved with just us working hard. There is a lot that can be achieved when everyone becomes one and the synergy effect is in works(; I/we) plan to continue together in the future as well. The result is not important.”
