What happened on Sep 16th: a compilation
If I could clarify some things. Lots happened on twitter within a short timeframe, and I've seen a fair number of people misled, so here goes. The Project Moon User Association(PMUA) had received the reply to their demand letter(can only be received by the recipient, and can't be refused) a week ago, but waited to make their statement because they still believed there was a chance PM could apologize, and because the Youth Union(YU) requested it. PMUA uploaded PM's reply and their statement today.
PM's reply, written by a lawyer, said essentially: You are lying and it affected our sales so I will sue you. The termination was legal because Vellmori said first that she wanted to resign(we have a recording). We wrote the agreement with Vellmori and her lawyer later. In order to protect her and the other employees we did nothing(if that sounds illogical to you, it is). Disappear immediately or we will sue you for defamation.
There are many things wrong with the reply, as covered by the PMUA's statement, but I'll get to that later. Alright let's go for it, says the PMUA.
Then PM tweets two threads. The first thread says: We were only laying low to protect our employees, y'all are lying, if you attack our employees we will sue you. The second one says: The YU tried to use us for political gains, since we were going to announce legal action against employee harrassment anyway but they tried to take the credit for it. Look at this image of a document where YU says they were wrong, and apologizes. This PMUA might be under the YU's control, isn't it suspicious? And political?
PM, though technically it's KJH, keeps insinuating that those such as PMUA and the YU are attacking the employees, when it's only KJH himself who's been criticized since 7.25, when he tweeted that they had 'terminated the contract' with Vellmori for violating company rules. The fans knew that was illegal. The paper that interviewed Vellmori the day after, the various news media that reached out to PM, the unions that spoke out on the matter knew it was illegal. We weren't going to let him get away with it if we could help it.
The YU rep Lee Jongchan(@JCLEE0333 on twitter) provided a more accurate picture. The YU, having just learned of the agreement between Vellmori and PM from PM's reply, had asked the PMUA to delay their statement, contacted PM behind the scenes. The PMUA and the unions they were working with had been trying to solve the situation amicably if possible, if PM would just come to the table and learn how to fix the situation. A legal fight would be the absolute last resort, since they wanted the company to do better.
This is where the supposed statement from the YU that PM included in their second thread comes in. A crude screencap of a word doc with typos and 'draft' in the title. It says: We recognize there was no illegal firing and that you've taken precautions to protect employees. We're sorry and we retract our protest. We welcome that you've stated ideology hunts and cyberbullying against your employees will be dealt with stern legal action. Basically, the YU didn't want Vellmori to be bothered anymore so they'd take a bit of a L.
The thing is, during the negotiations KJH refused to include that PM would take legal action to protect employees from ideology hunts and cyberbullying in the future in PM's statement. Apparently that wasn't something he could agree with. Negotiations fell out(around 8 pm, according to KJH), and the next day PMUA went ahead with their statement.
That's the bare facts of it. But I'd like to elaborate a little on where PM is contradicting itself, though the PMUA has already covered some of it.
1. It's laughable that KJH is using the excuse of 'protecting employees' to explain PM's past actions and future motivations, when he can't even put it on paper.
2. He most definitely did not protect his employees. The initial lack of action against DCinside incels' camping out of their office, how he treated contractors like Mimi(author of Wonderlab) and Monggeu(artist for Leviathan comics), the overwork and harrassment Eng translator Watson experienced, the HHPP manager he used as a scapegoat, the LoR Chinese localization team that still hasn't been paid... the list keeps growing.
3. KJH's words are all over the place. In the very first notice he says Vellmori's contract has been terminated because she violated company rules. You know, just as DC had asked for. In the second one, on 8.3, he says they did not fire her, and that it had nothing to do with ideologies. And that he would sue anyone calling it an illegal dismissal. (Also when news media reached out to ask if that meant she was still employed, said he wouldn't answer.) And in the most recent letter, he claims that during the phone call on 7.25 Vellmori said first she would resign.
Nobody believes that, not in the least because the Hankyoreh interviewed Vellmori the very next day about the unjustness of it. Any 'recording' of the call that he posits as evidence will likely reflect that, and work against him in court, so I'd love to see that actually. KJH apparently doesn't remember that.
4. Can you believe he's fudging his words to make it seem like the PMUA and those associated were the ones attacking employees? Not a single mention of DC anywhere. Now in court, if he's required to provide evidence as to just why Vellmori wanted to resign, well... DC did that. That's undeniable. All this started with wetsuit Ishmael, if anyone's forgotten. And if he admits DC was the reason a perfectly innocent illustrator was left jobless overnight, well, he can do away with his insistence that he was protecting her in any way.
5. And even if he twists legalese to claim Vellmori left of her own volition, it's nothing that hasn't been said by employers in the country a million times over. Advisory resignation this, political controversy that. It's still an unfair dismissal, and an especially rampant problem in the game industry that has been a long time coming to be dealt with.
6. Remember when KJH threatened Mimi and Monggeu with the mention of NDA, when they came out with stories of how they were horrifically mistreated by PM? Hypocritical, just revealing private correspondence with the YU without their permission. As well as the ridiculousness of treating the remnants of a negotiation that fell through like fact. He thinks people can't read, I suppose. It's more ammunition for the unions.
7. The inherent idiocy of evilmongering about 'politics' all thread long. What does KJH think unions Do? He's been fueling the fire regarding a labor rights case for near two months now, but doesn't seem to have learned much other than to dig deeper holes. What he means to do by repeatedly insinuating the PMUA and YU are secretly in cahoots when the PMUA has been open about working with the YU from the start I will never know.
8. Refusing to translate The Notice for 53 days was the first and biggest hint, I think. The radio silence, purposefully leaving international fans in the dark, threatening the contractors, the staunch refusal to name the incels for a single offense. During that time we learned Monggeu had been fired just as quickly as Vellmori, after being made to follow an unrealistic schedule to the point she had suicidal ideation. The workplace reviews in the wake of the incident saying KJH was prone to emotional outbursts. All the translators worked to the bone and abandoned, HHPP's manager announcing an apology with his name for decisions he couldn't have made. Those aren't the actions of someone who has his employees in mind.
The PMUA was created in response to PM's announcement to sue fans back in August. They'd held out hope that KJH would be someone who could see reason. But you'd have to be beyond naive to believe that now. So with all evidence piled up during these two months pointing to KJH being a nasty little guy who has only ever had himself and DC's best interests at heart, I sincerely hope KJH fucks himself over, and for all fans who are eternally confused about what PM has done wrong to be someday in need of a union.
#project moon#limbus company#am going to sleep but questions are always welcome#why does anyone take pm's words at face value

steel making 1 Spitting
In the steelmaking process, spitting mainly occurs in the early stages of skill development, referring to the phenomenon where fine iron droplets are spattered into the mold. Such spitting can have adverse effects on the stability of the steelmaking process and the quality of the products. One of the main causes of spitting is the practice of Hard Blow.
Jongchan Kim, Gyeonghwan Lee, Dongyoung Song, Garam Kim 『NCS Steel Engineering』 Sanyuan Books (2017) page 78
Hard Blow, when L/L0 approaches 1, results in efficient oxygen utilization in the deoxidation reaction, causing the oxygen content in the molten steel to approach equilibrium concentration, leading to a decrease in excess oxygen, lower T—Fe in the slag, delayed dissolution of lime, and increased likelihood of spitting during the early stages of solidification. When slag formation is delayed or slag fluidity is poor, the likelihood of spitting increases.
Another cause of spitting is delayed slag formation and poor slag fluidity. To address these issues, introducing fluxes such as lime or mill scale to facilitate early formation of slag on the steel surface is effective. This helps delay slag formation and improve slag fluidity, thereby reducing the likelihood of spitting.
Additionally, implementing Soft Blow can reduce the likelihood of spitting. Unlike Hard Blow, when L/L0 is low, Soft Blow is performed. This results in lower oxygen efficiency in the deoxidation reaction, causing the oxygen content in the molten steel to exceed equilibrium concentration, leading to an increase in excess oxygen and higher T—Fe in the slag, promoting lime dissolution, and making slopping more likely during the mid-stages of solidification.

The Truth Beneath (2016) - Lee Kyoung Mi
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1J9iTbly_sLC2ldB-IXBDzhaXZYJYCb3f/view?usp=sharing
The Truth Beneath, directed by Lee Kyoung-mi and released in 2016, tells the story of the disappearance of a politician's daughter fifteen days before election day. Yeonhong is gravely worried by Minjin’s disappearance but her husband, Jongchan is preoccupied by his campaign and insists on waiting before publicly announcing what Minjin has done and starting the search. Yeonhong relentlessly tries searching for her daughter and then for the truth of what has happened to Minjin when her body is discovered. Yeonhong learns about her daughter’s only close friend, Mi-ok, and gains more insights into their lives through their teacher, Son So-ra.
Genre is one of the many factors of whether audiences look forward to seeing a movie or why they might heavily avoid it. Some may love romantic comedies while others call them too sappy and favor exciting horror films instead. As Leo Braudy states, “the critical understanding of genre films therefore becomes a special case of the problem of understanding films in general” (663). With how crucial genre is to an audience's experiences, reactions, and interpretations, it is of the utmost importance to discuss what constitutes the genre of a film.
According to Rick Altman, genre theory should consider both semantic and syntactic elements in order to determine this. The semantic elements are “common traits, attitudes, characters, shots, locations, sets, and the like” while the syntactic elements are the “definitions that play up instead certain constitutive relationships between undesignated and variable placeholders” (Altman 556).
Using The Truth Beneath as a film example, Sam Altman’s genre theory can be implemented to provide us an in-depth look into the essentials of semantic elements and the effect of those syntactically.
Jongchan and Yeonhong’s spotless image must be preserved due to Jongchan’s political campaign. As Korean society is rather patriarchal and its politics dominated by men, charming and assertive Jongchan with a loving wife and daughter is a popular candidate. However, this also results in many attempts to break that image. Throughout the film, it is evident that the Korean people are constantly scrutinizing their family as anything and everything is crucial, even Yeonhong’s hometown of Jeolla-do. Yeonhong still being Korean but being “othered” by her husband’s constituents for being from another province shows the clear regionalism present in Korea. Any imperfections are unforgivable, a theme that is emphasized by the lack of urgency following Minjin’s disappearance which only worsens Yeonhong’s concerns and desperation. These political contexts contribute to the created syntactic structure and affect how the film’s semantic elements are incorporated.
Yeonhong as a Korean woman is expected to perform her roles as a loving, perfect wife which surprises the viewers even more as they see Yeonhong’s desperation grow and her feminine rage is fully expressed. Asian women are typically boxed into having meek and subservient personalities which Yeonhong shrugs off in favor of fulfilling her responsibilities as a mother. Yeonhong does all she can to bring her daughter home and gain justice for her when she is found dead. This ranges from aggressively confronting all the suspects such as Mi-ok and forcing Jongchan’s campaign manager to help her solve the case by stabbing her own hand with scissors (after brutally and savagely snipping her husband’s flyer face up, of course). Yeonhong remains persistent. She is no longer the perfect Korean wife but one who will no longer tolerate the empty promises and fake condolences given by politicians and enemies. The audience is hoping for Yeonhong’s success and restoration of her wellbeing throughout the film even when her happiness is unrecoverable after her daughter’s tragic death.
The intersection of the genre and culture can further be seen in the syntax/semantics of The Truth Beneath by focusing on the characters’ societal roles and relationships. One of the factors behind Minjin’s death is her and Mi-ok’s blackmail of their schoolteacher’s affair. In return for keeping her secret, they received test answers and their grades were able to skyrocket. In Korea, academics are of the utmost importance and its education system’s funnel to success is especially cutthroat. The blackmail done that enables the girls to obtain the test scores speaks to the pressure of academic achievement and contributes to both the gravity of the overall situation and the film. This pressure to conform is also present in the ostracization of the girls due to their own music tastes and dreams. This social commentary appeals to the audience who have likely experienced these struggles for themself and increase how emotionally invested they are. This is also crucial to this film as emotional investment is already important for overall film and media but especially in thriller mystery where so much relies on the suspense and anticipation gained by caring about the characters’ wellbeing which is already hanging in the balance. Viewers are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out what happened to Minjin after seeing how dedicated both Yeonhong and Mi-ok are to her. Closure is received as those responsible are fully punished and revenge is fulfilled but all parties are still utterly devastated and lost by the tragedy. Peace does not exist and the social situations that haunt Yeonhong and Mi-ok at the beginning of the film still continue by the end. They are stuck and as a result, the semantic elements of tension, anxiety, and suspicion are left with them even after they are over their anticipation and relief of avenging Minjin.
Another claim by Braudy is that “the joy in genre is to see what can be dared in the creation of a new form or the creative destruction and complication of an old one” (666). This film embodies this perfectly especially with its hybrid genres and its further exploration into societal and gender norms. The film embraces the thriller mystery genre and presents unexpected yet strong and distinct characters and plotlines. From the typical trope of a politician’s daughter going missing and the expectations of thrillers and mysteries, audiences start this film thinking they know what is about to happen. However, The Truth Beneath certainly holds its own and utilizes its situations, characters, and elements to incorporate twists and shock the viewer with its imagery and revelations at every opportunity. The Truth Beneath uses the genre truly amazingly and produces a refreshing interpretation of the thriller mystery genre.

Better late than never, right? 🥴
Simple, answer the questions. @ some people. Include the tag ‘g2ky BL mutuals 2022’ on your post so we can find everyone’s answers!
what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
Since I’m so late to this, I’m just gonna do whatever BLs I can remember I watched recently. My Tooth, Your Love really shocked me with it's commentary on C-PTSD, like?!?! I remember watching the scene where dude is walking in the rain and just being like "is... is he having a trauma flashback?? Oh we're going there?!" Through me for an entire loop!
This one is definitely a reach, but I could not believe just how gay The Devil Judge was. Like, you're gonna tell me that WASN'T a gay drama?! That Gaon wasn't juggling his feelings for his best friend and his sunbaenim at the same time?!?! Come on, please bfr!!
what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
KinnPorsche. After waiting a whole year for the drama, the production team taking extra time to fix and perfect things, I was very disappointed with the writing. The visuals were stunning, and everyone looked so pretty, and had great chemistry. But after all that time, I expected the writing to at least be on par with History 3: Trapped, a main popular Mafia BL that came before it, only for it to be just ok. I expected it to be good, great even.
what has been your favorite BL this year?
The New Employee! I just live for how it shows realistic aspects about queerness, like Seunghyun having gay friends, being apart of a queer club in college, Jongchan having all male exes, etc! The chemistry between the the 2 was impeccable, and I just love how softly they look at each other. I also really love the use of "you wanna see my cat" to get Seunghyun up to Jongchan's apt 😏
favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)
Eunho x Lee Heon (Tinted With You)
WenZhou (Word of Honor)
WangXian (The Untamed)
Tang Yi x Shaofei (History 3: Trapped)
Yuhao x Zixuan (History 2: CTL)
Boss x Mek (My Engineer)
Youyi x Yanwei (Couple of Mirrors)
So many more, even within the mentioned shows, I just don't wanna type anymore 😅
what’s your non-BL favorite this year?
Interview With A Vampire, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Spy x Family, Half Bad, Abbott Elementary, Young Royals, geez I watch a lot of entertainment huh?
I tag @saranghaeshinee @sikeopath @bulletsfrank
Only if you want to, of course!
Get To Know Your BL Mutuals
I was tagged by my favorite fellow clown @elnotwoods
Simple, answer the questions. @ some people. Include the tag ‘g2ky BL mutuals 2022’ on your post so we can find everyone’s answers!
what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
I’d say Kabe Koji, My Ride, and 21 Days Theory both surprised me with how much I really liked the adult elders in both of them. Ghost Host, Ghost House surprised me with how much I bought the desire between the leads. Love in the Air surprised me by not only being an engaging watch, but also in helping me make friends with some of the kinksters in fandom.
I absolutely did not see Rainbow Prince coming, nor how much I would unironically love it.
DNA Says I Love you went to a queer space I hadn’t even thought about.
what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Bite Me. I will never stop lamenting how much I hurt for Mark Siwat that this project went sideways for no real reason. Star and Sky, too, because goddamn were those boring and irritating. Love Area the series…. just ugh.
what has been your favorite BL this year?
Hmm… this is hard. If I have to pick one, then Gameboys 2. The maturity that show had in the way they handled the complexities of a new couple and the dynamics with their queer friends is sublime. There’s a depth to the way the IdeaFirst Company approaches storytelling that I think gets lost in the conversations about tropes and chemistry.
Shoutouts for Kabe Koji, Minato’s Laundromat, Secret Crush on You, Old Fashion Cupcake, Cherry Magic the Movie, About Youth, Blueming, To My Star 2, and 21 Days Theory for getting 9′s or higher
favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)
in no particular order:
Oh-aew and Teh (ITSAY/IPYTM)
Mork and Tawan (My Ride)
Rain and Payu (Love in the Air)
Kenji and Shiro (What Did You Eat Yesterday?)
Cairo and Gavreel (Gameboys)
Dean and Pharm (UWMA)
Minato and Shintaro (Minato’s Laundromat)
Togawa and Nozue (Old Fashion Cupcake)
Pat and Pran (Bad Buddy)
Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi (We Best Love)
Key and Chen (Boys Lockdown)
Adachi and Kurosawa (Cherry Magic)
Seo Joon and Ji Woo (To My Star)
Xu Qi Zhang and Ye Guang (About Youth)
Tian and Phupha (A Tale of Thousand Stars)
Aoki and Ida (Kieta Hatsukoi)
Win and Tops (Ingredients)
Xia Yu Hao and Qiu Zi Xuan (History 2: Crossing the Line)
Frame and Book (Make It Right) - I will be taking no criticism about MIR.
what’s your non-BL favorite this year?
So much. Koisenu Futari for sure, because we never get to see ace stories. Sleep With Me is my favorite GL of the year right now (yes, more than GAP). I enjoyed Extraordinary Attorney Woo a lot (even if I’m unsure how to talk about it due to feedback from autistic folks). Our Flag Means Death. Heartstopper. Young Royals 2. Abbott Elementary.
I absolutely came apart because of 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us. Cannot reflect on this year without talking about it.
Thank you for tagging me. I need to get back to my end of year post.
I feel like everyone I know has already done this or been tagged…. I’ll tag @yugiohio, @gillianthecat, and @sapphorarelyreads. Consider yourself tagged if you want to participate. No pressure otherwise

Do you mean for that to be some kind of gotcha, person who would not believe pm had done wrong despite 24 hrs of my offering evidence back in august?
Pm may have Said they'd protect their employees from cyberbullying and such from now on, but the caveat is that when their talk with the union fell out they refused to include in their statement the more specific terms to 'protect emplyees against malicious users' ideology hunts and cyberbullying in compliance with the occupational safety and health act, with stern legal action'. Why do you think that was?
It's still not included, and they're still sticking with the lie that it was all for vellmori's protection and that she wanted to resign first.
And still with the legal threats toward the fans, so nothing's changed, really. Their stance is that they've done nothing wrong except worrying the fans with the 'controversy' while absolving themselves and dc of any blame. Union rep lee jongchan uploaded the union's reply(you know, a draft of which was touted around by pm) retracting their protest and welcoming pm's statement to protect their employees despite the fact there was no agreement reached, because it was at least something. Did you miss the other tweet by the rep that said he definitely disagreed with those suspect parts of pm's statement? Looks like it.
Ha. No, pm didn't apologise. It's the exact same thing pm uploaded on the 16th, refusing to acknowledge what they did and saying they'll continue with suing the fans, without a single mention of dc.
They're desperate for people to believe their lie that vellmori resigned of her volition. Like dc wasn't baying for it. Like pm didn't call her up in the middle of the night, in order to appease their precious incels with news of the termination as quickly as possible. The notice that faulted her for 'violating company rules'. Pretending she didn't have that interview with the paper the very next day. You don't bring a labor attorney with you to settle a resignation you're perfectly comfortable with. It's preposterous they'd pretend anything they did was for the protection of their employees, when with every action they prove otherwise.
How simple the world must look from their eyes.

Seungcheol He would be so annoyed. Not at you but because he feels like the universe is playing a trick on him ;;; would think about you for weeks after briefly meeting, hoping that you were thinking of him too
Jeonghan Not a problem. Joshua exist as a 24/7 translator dictionary english-o-pedia and 3rd wheel. But to be honest he’d want to teach you Korean more than learn English because I have never heard Jeonghan speak more than three seconds of english.
Joshua Bro. Lowkey would love it because the two of you have private conversations and dirty talk. RIP Hansol.
Jun Would be really sad about it? And afterwards he’d often think about you? And just sigh? and he just needs a hug and to be tol d it’s okay and he’s doing well.
Hoshi Naega Hosh can do anything. He is so hard working and tries really hard to make things work out. But you gotta try hard too mate he deserves someone who can match his diligence
Wonwoo Wouldn’t be too upset? You guys can do minimal communication but u connect w ur harts. Cutie lives by this until he misunderstands “let’s feed the dukcs” at a park as “feed me ducks” and proceeds to buy u duck meat. It was rlly e x p e n s i v e
Woozi Knows basic english anyway. Acts like language barrier is not a problem and when you seem annoyed at the barrier he gives u this “not my problem so annoying” look bc lowkey woozi is a TSUNDERE AND YOU KNOW IT but goes at night oto take english class lmao
DK so much positivity so much faith in the relationship. both of you take ages to translate what the other said in your head. lbr tho, it does not last but it was sweet and full of happy moments and it was more like he was your best friend :’)))
Mingyu “i love guys” thats it that was your relationship and brief interaction lmao im sorry but not really

Want to See the Mona Lisa? Get in Line
PARIS -- The Mona Lisa gets around. In 1516, she was lugged out of Italy on the back of a mule by Leonardo da Vinci and ended up in France, where she became royal property. She lived for a time at the Palace of Versailles, then moved permanently to the Louvre Museum. That stay was interrupted in 1911, when a thief snatched her off the walls and kept her for two years in his Paris apartment before he was caught trying to sell her in Florence, Italy. Now, the Mona Lisa is on the move again. And while it's only a temporary relocation -- from one wing of the Louvre to another -- it's causing commotion here. The Salle des États, where the painting has hung since 2005, is being renovated in time for the October opening of an exhibition commemorating the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death. So, since July 17 the portrait has been installed in a protective case on a temporary wall in another gallery. The difference is that there's only one way in -- up three escalators and through a single doorway -- and 30,000 visitors a day to accommodate. The museum has spread the word that it is "exceptionally busy," and that only prebooked tickets guarantee entry.Once they get past the metal detectors, ticket holders are herded like sheep in a long, coiling line. They shuffle up escalators until they reach the Mona Lisa's skylit new digs: the Medici Gallery, named after a striking series of wall-to-wall paintings by Rubens also on display there. Not that anybody notices the Rubens works. As if in an airport check-in area, dozens of visitors rowdily wait their turn in another snaking line. Armed with smartphones, selfie sticks and cameras, they then rush into the final stretch -- the Mona Lisa viewing pen. They have roughly 1 minute there before the guards shoo them away."I need more time to watch the Mona Lisa," said Jongchan Lee, a Korean mechanical engineer who had just seen the masterpiece for the first time. "There are so many people in there. So the guards are pushing us to go, go, go. That's not really good."The distance between the public and the painting is another gripe: Visitors are held back around 15 feet from the 30-inch-tall painting. Jane Teitelbaum, a retired educator from the United States who had seen the Mona Lisa multiple times "in the flesh" and wanted to share the joy with her daughter and granddaughter, said she "wasn't pleased" with the experience, because "we were so far away.""The thing about the Mona Lisa is, supposedly, her eyes follow you," Teitelbaum said. "I could hardly see her eyes."Until the 20th century, there was little fanfare around the Mona Lisa: She was just another painting in the Louvre. Her theft in 1911, and a high-profile trip to the Met in New York and the National Gallery in Washington in 1962-63 made her a global media sensation.Today, she tops the bucket list of many tourists. The problem is that there are so many more tourists now. Worldwide, international tourist arrivals (visitors staying at least one night in a country) reached 1.4 billion in 2018, two years earlier than forecast, according to the U.N. World Tourism Organization. France once again topped the list of destinations. And the Louvre drew a record 10.2 million visitors last year -- more than any museum, ever, it announced in January. Not surprisingly, the Mona Lisa is swarmed. Moments after seeing her, Alex Stewart, a professor at the University of Ottawa, said the crowds were "just enormous now" compared with 25 years ago when he first saw the portrait. "It's like cattle to the abattoir," he said. His wife, Hsiao-Huei Chen, also a professor at the University of Ottawa, said the escalators made the Louvre feel like "a department store" where the items on offer were "too expensive for me to buy."Back inside the Mona Lisa viewing pen, Gregory Jimenez, 25, a college student from Chile, lifted his fancy camera above the heads of a row of people in front of him and took a shot. "You have to take a photo to be able to appreciate her," he said as he walked out.Photographs may be a solution, but they're also part of the problem. People don't just want to see the Mona Lisa: they want the picture for social media to prove it. Many don't look at her at all; they focus on their smartphone screens. Some even turn their backs, beam their finest Mona Lisa smile, and take a selfie, as she grins right back. The phenomenon now known as overtourism is frustrating everybody: visitors, host institutions and host countries, said Marina Novelli, a professor of tourism at the University of Brighton in England. "This perception that I have the right to travel and go wherever I like, whenever I like, is no longer possible," she said. "We live in a world that is overcrowded, and travel is equally overcrowded."Novelli said countries should stop striving for ever-higher tourism figures, and take a more qualitative approach to travel. Cultural institutions such as the Louvre should make visitors feel more responsible about the damage caused to museums and heritage sites by overcrowding, and try to change their behavior, she added. It's like entering an elevator, she explained: If there are too many people, "you're going to get stuck."The Louvre is starting to introduce stiffer traffic-control measures. Last week, the museum's deputy managing director, Vincent Pomarede, announced that from October or November, all visitors -- even those eligible for free entry, or holding passes valid at all Paris museums -- will need to reserve a timed slot for their visit. The measure was originally planned for early next year.Novelli said she would be more radical still in protecting the world's top sites. If "the way to deal with it is closing access to a particular attraction," she said, "so be it."Try telling that to Alia Al Jabr. The 19-year-old engineering student from Kuwait looked dazzled by her first encounter with the Mona Lisa. "We love art, we love seeing art!" she said, as her younger sister and brother nodded approvingly. But what about the rushed conditions? "I don't mind, because I took a beautiful picture. I actually took a video," she said, noting that she'd already posted on both Snapchat and Twitter. What if she didn't get a photo? "I would be sad," she said. "It's like a memory. We have to take a picture to remember our first time here."This article originally appeared in The New York Times.
