Medha Dakshinamurthy
One of the famous and most popular forms of Dakshinamurthy is Medha Dakshinamurthy. He is depicted as seated under the Banyan Tree with the Right Leg on the Demon Apasmara and the Left Leg on the Right Thigh. With four hands he holds a pot of nectar, veda sastra, chinmudra and akshamala (beads of rosary /sphatika).
It is interesting to note that Devi Sharada of Sringeri is depicted with these very symbols–the Amrita Kalash, Veda shastra, Chinmudra and Akshamala. She also holds a parrot, which is a symbolic representation of Vak. Devi Sharada is considered the female form of Medha Dakshinamurthy.
Medha Dakshinamurthy is regarded as the first guru -- and the destroyer of ignorance, represented by the demon Apasmara Purusha, (the deluded self) being crushed under the divine foot.
The Upasana of Medha Dakshinamurthy confers razor sharp intelligence, analytical skills, excellence in studies and academics, victory in the debates and polemics, intuition and inspiration while contemplating on tarka (logic), vyakarana (grammar),mimamsa etc.
Several years ago, when our Gurudev was pursuing his education in mechanical engineering, by the grace of the Divine he met his first diksha guru, who initiated him into the upasana of Maha Medha Dakshinamurthy. After completing the rigorous sadhana for 3 years, Gurudev was blessed by Lord Dakshinamurthy Himself as "Sarva mantra yantra tantra siddhirastu". Since then, Gurudev under the blessings of Lord Maha Medha Dakshinamurthy performed many difficult sadhanas and successfully completed them with desired results in a short period of time.
Medha Dakshinamurthy is thought to train via para vak, which is a divine speech inaudible to worldly ears and resides inside the recesses of silence. His disciples are ancient Rishis and sages. He imparts the best focus, knowledge, and comprehension.
Ordinary expressions are not needed to grasp the teachings of Dakshinamurthy who explains the true meaning of Brahman naturally. The concept of Dakshinamurthy mentioned in the Rig Veda was the transformation of Rudra into the giver of gifts. The Dakshinamurthy Upanishad elaborates on the aspect of Medha Dakshinamurthy imparting knowledge to the Rishis and Sadhus.
Therefore his Dhyana shloka says:
चित्रं वटतरोर्मूले वृद्धाः शिष्या गुरुर्युवा । गुरोस्तु मौनं व्याख्यानं शिष्यास्तुच्छिन्नसंशयाः ॥३॥
It is indeed a strange picture to behold; At the root (i.e. base) of a Banyan Tree (Vata) are seated old Disciples (i.e. aged Disciples) in front of a Young Guru. The Guru is Silent, and Silence is His exposition (of the Highest Knowledge); and that (Silence) is severing the doubts (automatically) from the minds of the Disciples.
Medha Dakshinamurthy has a natural disposition of Sattva. His complexion is brilliant and glows brightly. He is deeply immersed in the Self (bhava shuddha) with a mild smile on His divine face. He is the teacher of yoga, music, wisdom, and giving exposition on the shastras. He is worshipped as the Guru Swarupa who guides the soul towards the ultimate liberation.

🦎STRETCH YOURSELF🐊 I had a conversation the other day with an athlete who expressed that yoga would be so good for him because he needs to do ‘more stretching’. This kind of comment can tend to rub a yogi up the wrong way, because yoga is about both strength and flexibility and about so much more than both those things. 🦎 🐊 Then we go and post a picture of ourselves with our legs behind the head and wonder why people refer to it as stretching. I was born being able to do this pose (yoga sleep pose) so it doesn’t represent any kind of achievement. It does feel good though! 🐊 🦎 The ways I have been stretched have been mental, emotional and spiritual. I discovered that although my muscles could stretch my fascia (connective tissue) could still be tight, restricted and painful throughout my body. I learned to tune in to the feedback loop of pain and recognise what my body was saying. I learned to expand my breath, to feed my body oxygen it was so desperately short of. I learned to sit still. I learned to consciously surrender all the holding in my physical and emotional body causing me pain after experiences I had all but forgotten. 🐊 🦎 So yes. Stretching. Maybe that’s accurate after all. 🐊 🦎 #shashaspiritledlife #yogasleeppose #yoganidrasana #meditation #breathwork #pranayama #stretchyourself #connectivetissuerelease #chinmudra https://www.instagram.com/p/B5ld7tRnsxk/?igshid=1nva51krqqgvb

👆 The Seal of Consciousness. Positioning your fingers like this (known as a “mudra” or “seal”) is a way to bring awareness between your individual self and the universe. The index finger represents “you” and the thumb represents “universal consciousness.” When practiced it may brighten your mood, calm the mind, and enhance your sense of connection to yourself and the world outside of you. . . 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐝𝐫𝐚 / 𝐆𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐝𝐫𝐚
Chin means consciousness in Sanskrit, and the purpose of this mudra is to remind the practitioner of the goal of yoga, the union of the individual soul with the supreme soul. Mudra means seal, and it is essentially an energetic and spiritual gesture that controls the flow of energy within the body.

Chin Mudra – The Symbol that got me hooked to Symbology
I never realizes that Hindu gods and symbols had deeper meaning until I learnt the significance of Chin Mudara. It simply blew my mind. It completely changed the way I experienced temples and religious art.
Chin Mudra is also called Gnayana Mudra and represents the ultimate knowledge that leads to liberation. Moksha or liberation is Hinduism is freedom from suffering and the never ending cycle of life and death.
In order to understand this symbol we need to understand the hindu philosophy of Advaitham.
According to Vedanta we are all Brahman (infinite, blissful, unsullied consciousness). We experience ourselves as limited entities because we identify ourselves with the body, mind and intellect. Mind being our emotional component and intellect being our thinking reasoning component. The entire spiritual journey is removing this wrong notion of ‘I’ and discovering our real self. Once you identify with the real ‘you’, you attain a state called ‘Poornathwam’ meaning completeness. This is a state of absolute contentment and uninterrupted bliss. This realization is often referred to as union with god, though it is only the removal of an imagined separation
Now, let us see how this concept is represented in using Chin Mudra. The thumb represents god or Brahman because without the thumb the hand cannot function. The middle, ring and the small finger represents the body, mind and intellect respectively. The mind being the emotional component and intellect being the thinking component. Index finger represents the ego because it keeps pointing at others for all its miseries.
When you hold your hand normally the index finger is attached to the other three fingers and is far away from the thumb. This implies, we normally think of ourselves as the body, mind and intellect and separate from god. As long as we have this notion, we will have a beginning and an end. When the finger is erect it is straight line with a clearly defined beginning and ending representing birth and death. When ego separates itself from the body/mind/ intellect and unites with the thumb (representing god) it forms a circle, it becomes complete . Just like a circle has no beginning and ending you reach a state of birthlessness and deathlessness. This is Chin Mudra for you.
Since the job of the guru is to impart this knowledge and lead you to liberation, all the forms of god as teacher (Guru) will have Chin Mudra in one of the hands. If you have observed the idols of Dakshinamurthi and Hayagriva, which are the forms of Shiva and Vishnu as Gurus you will find this Mudra in the bottom right hand.
I love its economy of form and the depth of meaning. Isn’t it a masterpiece of Minimalism. Try representing the theory of relativity using your fingers, you will understand why this is such an amazing work of art.
