language learning is such a personal thing that there is no “right” or “wrong” way of doing it. it’s whatever works on bringing YOU closer to YOUR goal.

you want to watch tv shows but don’t really care for speaking with others? yay!! no speaking practice needed.

you want to learn quickly for an upcoming trip? yay! text book phrases and simple grammar.

you’re a beginner and it’s been 10 years? 2 weeks? 6 months? it doesn’t matter. as long as you are working towards bringing YOURSELF closer to what YOU want to achieve, you have succeeded: you are succeeding; you are doing great.

i find that so much demotivation comes from comparison and/or trying to follow other's advice too closely. if anki decks don't work for you, that's fine! if duolingo works well for you, then use it!

this language learning thing, it should be enjoyed. in the sea full of deceptive polyglot stories and videos on top of videos attempting to understand how to learn languages in "the fastest way possible" sometimes we should sit back and ask ourselves, "when is just learning things, enough"?

with that i hope you all continue working towards your dreams! whether you want to become a translator or just watch a few more movies in your target language, you can do it. i know you have it in you.

Trans regulus is 100% real to me but Walburga black with a daughter is a bone chilling thought.

Walburga was a definitely the sort of mother was incredibly picky with her ’daughter’s’ appearance. She was always quick to point out how regulus was ‘too skinny, your bones are showing’ or ‘could stand to loose some weight’ and like purposefully take food off of regulus’ plate to snidely make the point he was ‘being a pig’ when either his table manners weren’t absolutely perfect or he simply had ‘too much’ on his plate. She made sure to remind him every chance she could that his eyes were too slim and his lips too full and his stature too small to meet textbook European beauty standards AND his hair was too curly and his skin had too many moles and his nose was too big to meet textbook Asian beauty standards as well. There was always something to call out regulus for not paying attention to, something to justify being called a slob or careless. A hair couldn’t be out of place, posture had to be perfectly straight, clothing had to be precisely tucked, or Walburga would notice and make it a big deal. Even if he did everything right, she would mention something he couldn’t change. Even if he did change something, like got a nose job or something, she would still ask why he hasn’t gone smaller. Nothing he did could be enough and there was never a time that she ever looked at her ‘daughter‘ and called ‘her’ beautiful or even nice.

So even though regulus knows from other people he’s attractive, he’s aware that people let him get away with things because they find him pretty, he’ll never really believe them. There’s always something to fix, something he’s doing wrong. Anyone who doesn’t see that is stupid and naive. And he’s neither, so he does.

Thinking of a baby Regulus coming to London with his grandparents, not knowing any English, and meeting his parents and big brother for the first time.

Sirius anxiously waits by the front door to be the first to see his little brother, whom he didn't even know existed for most of his life.

They meet for the first time and there is a small language barrier since Sirius was brought up with more English (so he networks better with the other Purebloods). Still, the sight of a sleeping Regulus endears him so much that he eventually spends the night watching Regulus sleep until Sirius also falls asleep.

And Sirius picks up the habit of never calling Regulus by his name, only a Chinese nickname.

one thing about learning languages is that yes, learning in itself is fun but what’s even greater is the fact that all your other interests and hobbies can be looked at with another shade of light. I personally love philosophy and to be able to read another language’s nuances and concepts and understand it more than you ever could with a translation? incredible.

Looked up nicknames for Elodie and one of the suggestions I loved was Lolo. The obvious ones Ellie, Elle, Lee, Dee were also mentioned, but I love the mental image of little 4-year-old Jean calling his new baby sister Lolo and it sticking. They grow together and he becomes so much more than just her older brother. He's her parent, protector, and biggest supporter all rolled into one. Is it really a surprise she stops responding to anything but her full name when he's sent to Evermore?
