My kitty is Chile Pepper (I didn't name her). She was found outside huddled by a dryer vent in December in a place where she absolutely would have died if she hadn't been found by my brother in laws relative. That relative took her in, but found that she clashed with that persons existing cats, and was so anxious that she really needed a home with no other pets, so she sent word that she needed to re-home her.

My sister reached out to me, because I had been considering getting a cat. My first permanent cat (I was a kitten foster), since I was a kid. I went out to meet her, and fell in love. I brought her home on New Years Eve, at 2.9lb. Her foster (my BIL's relative) had noticed a strange bulge on her side at times, but not consistently. I am incredibly grateful she mentioned it to me, because it clued me in to watch for it.

Chile Pepper had a hernia, and a rare one, only caused by trauma. Meaning, either someone ran her over, or someone kicked her. I got very very lucky, and took her to a vet that both took me seriously, and wasn't going to charge me an arm and a leg to fix it. They told me that she wouldn't have survived a year without the surgery, because her growing body would have left her intestines outside her abdomen.

Chile Pepper survived because multiple people and multiple vets intervened. She got insanely lucky, but if I think too hard about her litter mates, I cry. They didn't get lucky, and I doubt any of them survived.

my mom was saying that I'm pretty unlucky when it comes to cat health, but I was saying that a lot of folk have issues like mine, it's just that they don't deal with them and then the cat dies.

she said "that's not true at all," and I had to list how many cats my aunt and uncle have burnt through in the same time I've had Pangur and Grim. and then I talked about an old friend who would never even name her kittens, because they always died within the first year. and of friends who've watched their cats deteriorate without going to the vet, while saying "there's nothing I can do." in mainstream culture, cat death is normal and invisible. it's just that a lot of time the cat dies outside of the house (whether through illness, accident, or predation) so people get to maintain deniability.
