Her behavior is just so odd and erratic and desperate - it's beyond what I'd expect of a child deprived of one meal one time who is otherwise regularly fed. A running thread throughout the narrative she tells is one of feeling out of control - consuming so much so fast she chokes, and feeling like she can't stop.
