Finding a use for boxes is so easy with kids. They can be made into a house, a car, used for building or a simple art activity. After a busy weekend with lots of boxes lying around I asked Mali if she wanted to use them to draw on. She loved this simple activity! She drew on all sides of the box 📦 and sat there for a good half an hour on her own. Afterwards she went over to her art trolley and got her stickers and stuck them all over the box too. Totally initiated that all on her own. When children have freedom to express themselves they can get totally immersed in the activity. So much better than having an adult lean over you and tell you what to do, what colour to use or how they think you should create something. The best part was I got to prep and cook dinner during this time without being interrupted! It’s a win win for both of us 😃 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What have you used a box for? That brown paper packaging you get in a delivery box? A wonderful sensory play opportunity, listening to it scrunching, tearing holes into it, wearing it, peeking through a tiny hole in it…endless fun. This week at Art Play! at Raum Schwalbe, I also observed green rubbery leaves being stencilled and splattered back and forth in silver paint, conversations between toddlers mirroring one another with spinning their paint rollers, little fingers tracing the woven designs in red cabbage and circles like bracelets, hooked over arms in bright yellow lemons. So what is child-led art? How is it different to adult-led art for kids, and why do you let the kids lead the way?  Surely the kids need to be shown what to do, they are so young! This is something I get asked when I talk about what I do, or first timers brand new to the concept.  We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach, the heart of which is about children being competent, giving them time and space to find out for themselves, not hurried, at their own pace.  This inquiry based method builds their confidence, allows then to problems solve and  often surprise adults with new ways of seeing the everyday, to interrupt a young child especially would stop their creativity in its tracks. They are curious little researchers exploring the world around them, and we go with them, offering tools or materials to extend what they are interested in, and so all their art is their playful unique self-expression, no template adult directed art.  This toddler artist loved to do two particular things on Saturday mornings in particular: The first was to sit in the middle of the paper, watching everyone making marks around her and contributing to it. Second was how she adored sitting cosy in her own space! Wonderful to observe this little artist getting into her zone, in the space behind the easel. I hadn’t noticed its potential before! An simple repeated object can be a real companion or focus for a small child, they find it again and take joy in exploring their world with it, enjoying the familiarity of it in appearing in front of them. This toddler artist has across this past term at Sensory Art Play, really focussed on the balls and circles within each LAB.  She enjoyed textured ones in paint, the feel and patterns made with it, ping pong ball inside a whisk listening to the sound it makes (try it!), rolled balls in clay, and then a squashed ball between the toes! It was particularly interesting to notice her reaction to circles printed on the glowing lightbox- flat shapes that can’t be picked up. Discover the magic of weaving in and outdoors during our Kids Summer Camp....through being immersed in nature art and shadow sculptures! We are collaborating with the very lovely @berlinweaving for an art filled day camp combining child-led playful art, and a twist on the age old tradition of weaving. During the day camp the kids will work together and individually to create both large scale creative art installations in our large empty indoor space in Prenzlauer Berg, as well as experiment with art in nature at nearby Leise Park. We will be INDOOR for our art installation using various yarns and fabrics; explore weaving with alternative ‘looms’; shadow play; exploring and experimenting with various materials and tools, from the tiny to the gigantic, layering, drawing, experimenting. We will then go OUTDOORS* to make looms; weaving with found materials, outdoor sculptures, costumes, hats, whatever can be imagined,  using brought and found natural materials. So so exciting, yay! Yesterday we started our Summer Pop Ups! With the Art Play class we  played with a whopping 10kg block of clay, the toddlers exploring with their feet, hands, rolling textures into it, building layer upon layer with it, making forests, so many delightfully different approaches to one medium.  The little artists drew onto acetate and also made marks onto their bodies on the colour changing lightbox, and explored pattern making with craft sticks onto the floor mirror, and elongated shadow projections. How does scale work? I observed the toddlers moving their bodies closer to and further away from the wall, moving the light source, finding out for themselves. 3D Paper Play! Experimenting with making graphic images taking textures from paper. The  8-12 year olds in our Saturday Kids LAB loved the brand new Speedball texture rollers, have you tried these beauties?! They played individually with a variety of textures— tightly folding papers and taking textures, drawing contrasts with the rollers, thinking about atmospheres created by shapes and forms, adding colours, lettering and their own stories. Loved watching them in their ‘AHA!’ moments over and over again as the roller revealed its magical trace on the paper. The  8-12 years in our Kids Art LAB began exploring memories of past birthdays, places they used to live, the details of the things that made them laugh and the special people they celebrated with. A great way to get to know a new group through their personal visualisations in inky A2 size mono printing. At first they were a bit hesitant of the mess with the ink on their hands, but then readily began to embrace grainy, faded qualities. After this more guided start, then played individually with a variety of tools—drawing with the rollers, scratching into layers, adding coloured details to the monoprints through oil pastels. Slow, playful Sensory Art Play for parent & child!  It is so incredible and such a privelidge watching the non-verbal communication between toddlers and their parents, simply through poking clay. I was noticing the child working out how it can be lifted with the craft stick stuck into it.  I observed babies and toddlers drawing with fingers and craft sticks on the colour changing light box, exploring how lines changed overlaid, rubbing out and drawing, repeating back and forth, squiggles, dots, dashes. Lots of investigation, discovering, learning through play, connecting with our little humans. So delighted to have begun our April- June Term at Raum Schwalbe! Our Kids Art LAB class for 8-12 year olds was a wonderful Tape Art , Drawing & Print-tastic Saturday morning session! We went on an exploratory textural journey through the recycling, fabric and nature boxes, drew patterns with rollers and examined scale and colour through drawing objects with colourful tape. We embraced the happy accidents in blind drawing with carbon paper and oil pastels, tried out different kinds of graphic lines found in kitchen utensils versus the soft organic fluid lines in seed pods. Really great fun to investigate, get tips from one another, each noticing different details to take further in their own ways.  Can’t wait to start the block on the 5th May, we will go further into Gelli Plate printmaking, explore under the microscope to inspire paintings, and more!
